CSC Awards Record-Breaking Number of Degrees & Certifications at 2025 Commencement by Matthew Harmon, CSC Communications & Marketing

Connors State College made history at its 2025 commencement ceremony, celebrating not just another graduating class, but a moment that showcases the college's expanding impact across Eastern Oklahoma. The numbers tell a remarkable story of growth, opportunity, and student success. The graduation ceremony featured Former Oklahoma Supreme Court Chief Justice and current Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education Regent Steven W. Taylor, who delivered the commencement address. Taylor, who served as Chief Justice from 2011 to 2017 and brings decades of legal and educational leadership experience to his current role as Regent, offered graduates insights on service, leadership, and the importance of education. Most notably, CSC awarded more degrees and certificates in spring 2025 than in the entire previous year combined—a testament to the

institution's rapidly higher education.

"These numbers represent more than statistics—they represent a lot of hard work. From not only the students, but the faculty and staff that have invested into them," said Dr. Ron Ramming, CSC President. "When we see a 45% increase in degree production in just one year, we're witnessing the direct impact of our commitment to student success and educational accessibility." The growth trajectory is nothing short of extraordinary. Degree and certificate production has surged over 45% from the 2023-24 academic year to 2024-25, with Associate of Science degrees leading the charge with a remarkable 70% increase. These aren't just numbers—they represent hundreds of students who found their path to success through CSC's programs.

Perhaps most impressive is the college's fiveyear growth story. Total degree and certificate production has increased by more than 144% over the past five years, positioning CSC among the top-performing institutions in Oklahoma for educational growth during this timeframe. "This five-year trajectory reflects our strategic vision coming to fruition," Dr. Ramming noted. "We've invested deliberately in programs that meet student needs and regional workforce demands, and these graduation numbers prove that approach is working."

boundaries. More than 80% of CSC's degree and certificate programs are in fields deemed critical occupations by the state of Oklahoma, meaning graduates are entering the workforce with skills that directly address pressing economic needs. "We're not just educating students—we're strengthening the economic foundation of Eastern Oklahoma," Dr. Ramming emphasized. "When 80% of our graduates earn credentials in critical occupation fields, we're directly contributing to workforce development and regional prosperity."

This expansion reflects strategic investments in programs, faculty, and student support services that have created new pathways for academic achievement.

From healthcare and technology to skilled trades and education, CSC graduates are filling essential roles that drive economic development throughout Northeast Oklahoma.

As graduates walked across the stage to receive their degrees and certificates, they carried with them not just individual accomplishments, but the distinction of being part of the largest graduating class in Connors State College history. Their success reflects the college's evolving role as a cornerstone of higher education and economic development in Eastern Oklahoma.

Owen and Velma Taylor Endowment Receives Nearly $50,000 Boost from Family by Matthew Harmon, CSC Communications & Marketing

Sometimes the best investments are the ones that grow across generations. Brenda Martin recently proved that point by contributing over $47,000 to the Owen and Velma Taylor Endowment at Connors State College—a donation that brings her family's story with the college full circle. The endowment, named for Martin's parents, helps non-traditional students pursue their education by providing scholarships to those who maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, with preference given to Sequoyah County residents. The Taylor family's connection to Connors State runs deep. Owen Taylor was a firstgeneration college graduate from CSC who faced financial challenges during his studies. When money got tight, the college president found creative solutions—including letting Taylor earn income by tending flower beds at

administrative homes. That support made all the difference. Owen not only graduated but went on to ensure his entire family valued education, including his wife Velma and their children, even during an era when higher education for women wasn't commonly encouraged. Martin herself became part of the CSC tradition, serving as a cheerleader and staying actively involved in campus life during her time there. Martin's substantial donation came from a strategic decision. She had been funding a local scholarship through a certificate of deposit but became frustrated with how that program awarded its funds. When the CD matured, she chose to redirect the entire amount to Connors State College instead.

Connors State College Celebrates Record-Breaking Nurse Pinning by Matthew Harmon, CSC Communications & Marketing

Connors State College proudly announces the pinning of its Nursing Program's largest-ever graduating class. With 75 graduates, this milestone achievement signifies the college's continued commitment to producing highly skilled healthcare professionals and addressing the nursing shortage in Northeast Oklahoma. The Spring 2025 ceremony held special significance as it marked the final pinning ceremony for CSC’s Director of Nursing & Allied Health Dr. Diana Mashburn, who retires after years of dedicated service to the program and its students. Connors State College's Nursing Program has a long-standing reputation for excellence in nursing education. The comprehensive curriculum, under the guidance of experienced nursing faculty, equips graduates with a robust skill set, blending theoretical

knowledge with extensive clinical experience. The program's emphasis on clinical education, critical thinking, and compassionate patient care ensures graduates are well-prepared for the challenges of the healthcare industry. The Nurse Pinning ceremony, a long time tradition honoring the graduates, took place on May 9th at Rougher Village Arena in Muskogee, Oklahoma. This event marked the culmination of the graduates' nursing education journey, celebrating their dedication and achievement. Connors State College's Early College Program Celebrates Inaugural Graduating Class by Matthew Harmon, CSC Communications & Marketing

Thirteen students made history this year as the first graduates of Connors State College's groundbreaking early college program—a partnership with Muskogee High School that's already proving to be a game-changer for underserved students in the area. The program allows high school students to graduate with both their diploma and an associate degree, completely free of charge. No tuition, no fees, no textbook costs— creating genuine opportunity for students who might otherwise find college financially out of reach. "For students with financial challenges, this program is a game-changer, removing financial barriers and giving them the chance to earn a degree," explains Trent Todd, the program coordinator who has watched this inaugural class navigate their dual academic journey. "The goal is to provide underserved

students in the Muskogee area the chance to pursue a college degree and create a better future for themselves and their families." The impact extends far beyond the financial savings, though those numbers are substantial. Students are entering the workforce two years ahead of their peers, or transferring to four-year universities with half their degree already completed. It's a head start that can reshape entire career trajectories. Currently partnered exclusively with Muskogee High School, the program represents a more intensive commitment than Connors State's regular concurrent enrollment offerings available to other area high schools. These students aren't just taking a college class or two—they're fully immersed in earning a complete associate degree alongside their high school requirements.

10 Connection: June 2025

EDUCATION

"It's incredibly exciting to see these students, who worked so hard and remained dedicated to their goals, complete the program and take the next step toward their future," Todd reflects. The dedication required is significant, but the payoff is transformational. The partnership between Connors State College and Muskogee High School exemplifies how educational institutions can work together to create opportunities that might not otherwise exist. Research consistently shows that completing a college degree creates ripple effects that extend beyond individual students to their families and communities. "Data shows that completing a degree can be life-changing not only for these students but also for their families," Todd notes. "I firmly believe this program exemplifies Connors

State's mission of building futures one at a time." As this inaugural cohort of 13 students moves forward—some into the workforce, others continuing their education—they carry with them not just degrees, but the distinction of being trailblazers. They've proven the concept works, paving the way for future students to follow in their footsteps. The early college program at Connors State College isn't just offering education; it's offering hope, opportunity, and a concrete path forward for students who might otherwise find college financially out of reach. In a world where education costs continue to climb, programs like this stand as beacons of what's possible when institutions commit to removing barriers rather than creating them.

Student Spotlight: Daurys Manzanillo (‘25) by Macey McCoy (Sophomore - Beggs, OK)

Daurys Manzanillo's path to Connors State College began with a life-changing opportunity. When Coach Perry Keith traveled to the Dominican Republic and offered Daurys and a few friends the chance to play baseball in the United States, the Santo Domingo native didn't hesitate. "When Coach Keith came to the DR and offered a few friends and I the chance to play baseball for him, I was immediately interested," Daurys recalls. While leaving everything familiar behind was daunting, he recognized the incredible opportunity for both higher education and advancing his baseball career. The transition to life in Warner wasn't without its challenges, but Daurys found his “home away from home” at CSC. Having a few friends from the Dominican Republic already on campus helped ease the adjustment, and the welcoming atmosphere at Connors State made the difference.

Beyond excelling on the baseball diamond, Daurys embraced campus life wholeheartedly. His favorite activities included attending basketball games and spending time with the friends he'd made here. Daurys certainly made his mark during his time as a Cowboy. This season, he finished in the top 5 of several Region 2 hitting leaderboards and earned a spot on the first team Region 2 All-Region team— achievements that reflect his dedication and talent. Daurys is ready for his next chapter at Oklahoma Wesleyan University, where he'll continue both his education and baseball career. As he prepares for this next step, Daurys remains grateful for the foundation CSC provided. "I cannot thank Coach Keith and CSC enough for the amazing opportunity I’ve had here.”

Bill's path took him from high school hallways to college campuses, spending five years at Sallisaw, ten at Muldrow, and wrapping up with 25 years at Carl Albert State College. Along the way, he built successful speech and drama programs at multiple high schools and earned Teacher of the Year honors at Carl Albert State College. Even as he dedicated himself to his career, Bill never forgot where it all began. "I always found it hard to cheer against Connors while at CASC," he confessed, a testament to the lasting bond between alumni and their alma mater.

It was during those early teaching years at Sallisaw that Bill met Judy Simpson Day, and their shared passion for education became the foundation of both a successful marriage and a fulfilling life. With the guidance of head coach Perry Keith, the Cowboys had a remarkable season on the road and at home, before it came to an end at the championship in the Regional 2 tournament. Despite some challenges along the way, the team showed resilience and determination. With both things in mind, the Cowboys had many players ranking top 5 in the Region 2 leaderboard. The team played 4 long days of baseball, and ended up playing in the Championship game on Sunday, May 11th. Despite being on Mother's Day, the Cowboys played their hardest, just coming up short with a score of 4-3 against Eastern Oklahoma State College.
