As we draw to the end of another vibrant year at Brentford School, I hope that you will enjoy reading about all of the fantastic activities which the students have been involved in.

So many of our girls embrace the opportunities at Brentford and are keen to develop their wider skills. This is so important in a competitive world, where qualifications are important, but they are not everything! Gaining confidence through developing leadership skills, learning to work with others by developing your team work skills, showing empathy and kindness to those who are in need through community and volunteering work, will enable your daughter to become that fully rounded citizen, ready for life in the future whatever that might look like. If your daughter does not get involved in the wider life of the school, please encourage her and make next year the year that she does this!

The final half term at school is a very busy one for all who work at the school as we review the year that has gone, consider what we have done well and where we could improve further. Our theme for next year is ‘Tightening the Nuts and Bolts’. Our focus will be on ensuring that we are even more forensic with our data tracking systems so that we are able to target students more closely who are falling behind their targets. Many of our students have incredibly challenging targets, set by the government. As the GCSE examinations have become far more challenging, the targets for our students all the way down into Year 7, reflect this extra challenge! It is fantastic that so many of our students do have high targets, but we need to work more closely with them to ensure that they are going that ‘extra mile’ to achieve these.

Additionally, we will also be looking at our homework systems and independent learning, so that students are really well prepared for when they sit examinations. Brentford 6th Form will remain a priority as we continue to work closely with Isleworth and Syon School to ensure that our students get the widest and best curriculum offer when choosing A’level and BTEC courses after Year 11. We also plan to set up a PTA (Parent, Teacher Association), and I hope that some of you will be keen to get involved.

Brentford very much is a community school and as parents your involvement is always valued. On behalf of myself and the school community, I would like to thank you for the contribution that you have made to the school this year. Whether it is through attending parents’ evenings, attendance at school plays, school fairs etc, no matter how large or small, your contribution is hugely

Chair of Governors Message As another year draws to a close, and the weather improves, we look forward to welcoming a well earned break for both staff and students.

It has been another busy and successful year! If I was to write about all the amazing events and activities that have taken place, I would need to write a book! It always makes me smile to see the enthusiasm of the girls when they are taking part in any extra-curricular activities, whether it be a sporting event, the summer fair or homework club. They are a credit to themselves and their families and we should be proud of each and every one of them.

I know all of the girls worked hard towards their end of year exams, but none more so than years 11 & 13 who are now waiting for their results; before taking the next step towards their personal goals. It will be a very interesting year for the GCSE results as this is the first year for the new 9-1 grading system.

However, I am confident that the grades will reflect the hard work the girls put in and all of the support provided by the staff in so many different ways. Good luck to you all.

The sad part of the summer term is that we often have to say goodbye to members of staff as well as students and this year is no exception. Mr Granelli will be retiring and I know that I am not alone in saying that he will be missed by staff, students, parents and ex-students alike. We wish you all the very best Mr Granelli for a long and happy retirement.

In closing, I would like to wish you all a relaxed and warm summer. Thank you to all the staff and students for another amazing year, and for constantly reminding us all of what makes BSfG the wonderful community that it is.

Goodwill Caravan fundraiser The Geography department and a group of enthusiastic year 12 students were part of a fundraising cake sale during a lunchtime in May to raise money for the charity “Goodwill Caravan”, a humanitarian nonprofit organisation that provides: support, emergency care, accommodation and

MONEY RAISED WITH CHARITY RISE Over the past 5 months a group of fifteen Brentford School for Girls students have been taking part in a social enterprise project ROAR run by the charity RISE. Their aim was to raise money to help students in West Bengal attend literacy classes. In West Bengal the average class size is around 80 pupils and sourcing school equipment can be difficult for many children.

The students were split into four groups and all created their own social enterprise businesses. All four groups worked tirelessly to perfect their products and market them across the school community. During enterprise week, Brentford food for refugees in Europe. We have just recieved the results and are very proud to announce our winners: As a school, Brentford School for Girls achieved 5 Silver and 18 Bronze Certificates.

Congratulations to the best in the year groups, who achieved silver certificates; Haniah Khan (Year 7) and Tallulah Paisley (Year 8). The other Silver certificate winners were Chelsea Noval, Year 8 and Tahreem Kashif and Asia Hadithy from Year 7.

For the second year in a row, Tallulah Paisley was also Best in School with only three marks away from a gold. Well done Tallulah!!

Year 11 students, friends and family gathered to celebrate their contributions to Brentford School for Girls over the last 5 years.

Students received subject awards for outstanding contributions to the curriculum, as well as tutor group awards and most improved awards.

The highlights of the day included a video filled with plenty of photos and videos of the Year 11’s through their time at Brentford, with a few messages to their fellow class mates and thank you to staff.

The most prestigious awards of the afternoon included the Head of Year award given to Simran Garcha and Mariam Amani for their continuous hard work and perseverance. The Deputy Head Teacher award to Alaa Mohammed for her continuous focus and engagement within all her subjects. Finally the Head Teacher award was given to Monica Mistry-Marques for her continuous helpful nature, involvement in the school council and hardworking attitude.

Brentford University

In preparation for their transition into Year 13 and to get students thinking about life after A Levels we held our annual UCAS conference on Thursday 13th and Friday 14th July. The conference provided an opportunity for students and parents to ask questions and become well informed about UCAS (Undergraduate courses), Student Finance, Apprenticeships and Art College. By the end of the conference all of the students had used the information provided to complete either a first draft of their personal statement, researched apprenticeship opportunities or updated their CV. They will continue with the UCAS application process when they return in September and will be fully supported through every stage by our Brentford 6th Form Team.

Year 13 graduation

Our Brentford 6th Form Team joined the Year 13 in saying farewell and celebrating their time here. This included a graduation ceremony followed by a catered celebration in the 6th Form Centre. We are sad to see the Year 13 leave but wish them every success in their exam results and future plans.

brentford 6th form summer ball The Brentford 6th Form Team, Year 12 and Year 13 students had a lovely and memorable time at the end of year Summer Ball, which was held at Hampton Court Palace Golf Club. It was great to see so many dressed to impress and having a fantastic time singing and dancing along to what they described as ‘an amazing DJ’. The Summer Ball was held in collaboration with Isleworth and Syon 6th Form; a great opportunity for students to socialise with their peers across the Borough. Another successful Summer Ball, well done to the Head Boy at Isleworth and Syon, Maxwell Omondi and Head Girl at Brentford 6th Form, Daria Boloz and their teams for organising the event.

We are looking forward to next year’s celebrations.

headstart Headstart day took place on the 3rd July for Year 11 students continuing their transition into Brentford 6th Form.

Members of the 6th form team delivered sessions focused on preparing for the step up to post 16 education, ensuring that misconceptions were addressed before commencing in September. All students participated in a range of team building activities in the afternoon to conclude the day.

er i m e r P Film Once again the Brentford 6th Form Media Studies AS and A2 students amazed us with their film openings and music videos at the annual red carpet event in our school studio theatre. There was an excellent audience of students and staff for the event. A number of different edits of the various film and music video projects were available to view. Outside there were also displays of the students art work for A2, which is a crucial element of their final coursework.There were excellent canapes prepared by our amazing catering team and these were devoured by all.

Next Year we will welcome the return of GCSE Media Studies and also GCSE Film Studies, whose film trailers and dramatic scenes will be fantastic I am sure. In addition there will also be the A level work from the final year of A2 Media Studies and the first year of Creative Digital Media Production level 3 BTEC. I for one cannot wait!

As always the competition for the prizes was very tight and the visiting awards judge Aminah Brunt, an ex-student and now hard working producer director of documentary and entertainment for Channel 5, had a very challenging task choosing the winners. On the 22nd May we were delighted to welcome back one of our recent alumni, Jodie Mooney, who has just returned from volunteering in Nepal. As part of the school’s ‘So You Want to be a …’ speaker programme, Jodie agreed to come into school to inform students about the charity she volunteered with, VSO. Jodie gave an informative and entertaining talk about her 3 months volunteering at a primary school in Nepal.

On the 24th April every Year 10 student was given the opportunity to have a mock interview with a local professional and given individual feedback. The event was supported by professionals from a range of well-known organisations including Lloyds bank, BSI, the National Citizenship Service and Regan & Dean. Several of our parents, governors and alumni also joined us. One employer said that she “really enjoyed having the opportunity to provide students with a better understanding of the interview process and gave them some hints and tips to take the fear out of the situation and present themselves in the best possible light”.

CO-OP AWARDS BRENTFORD SCHOOL FOR GIRLS COMMUNITY FUNDING

Brentford School for Girls were delighted to receive £1,800 from The Co-op Local Community fund. The school’s local Co-op on Boston Manor Road Brentford supported the school as one of their local charity causes. In total there are more than 4,000 causes across the UK that benefit from the community fund awards which are supporting and making a difference in local communities. Every time a customer purchased a product from the Boston Manor store over the six month period 1% of the customer’s total spend went towards the school.

future youth schools forum This year Brentford Schools For Girls became one of only three schools in the UK to take on the role as school host for the Future Youth Schools Forum, a pan-European Oxfam project funded by Erasmus+ involving Italy, Lithuania, Cyprus and Poland. Recently, we ran a forum on forced migration during refugee week on the 23rd of June. In the weeks preceding the forum, every student had the chance during tutor time to explore the issues of ‘People Forced to Flee’.

On the day we hosted students and teachers from Woodside High School in Wood Green and St John Laws Academy in Harpenden, the two other lead schools in the UK. We also hosted Josephine Liebl, Humanitarian Policy Advisor for Oxfam GB and Ammar Al Saker a Syrian refugee now living in the UK who spoke movingly about his journey across land and sea, taking extraordinary risks and facing terrifying hardship to reach the UK. The only representative of his family to escape persecution and war, he will most likely never be able to return or see them again.

As the day of the forum approached our sixteen dedicated students who had given up their time every Thursday after school to prepare for the forum planned all of the activities for the day. They also planned assemblies where they raised the awareness about the plight of people forced to leave their homes because of war, persecution, famine and climate change. They worked closely with Oxfam who came into school to help the students plan activities which would make students think critically about the issues, their causes and possible solutions. As part of an experiment it was planned that during the day of the forum Brentford School for Girls would take-over the @OxfamCampaigns Twitter feed.

The agreed initial action of the Forum was for the students and their teachers to lobby their MPs on behalf of the ‘Stand As One’ campaign, to help change the law and allow refugee children and their familes to be reunited.

Next year the Forum will continue with the theme ‘Gender Equality’ and we will be running a much larger event on the 8th March 2018 as part of International Women’s Day. This will be followed by a trip in April to Rome for some forum participants to meet with the students and teachers from our partners across Europe.

The annual Art Exhibition expanded this year. We had the usual representation of the visual arts with the additional bonus of singers and musicians. This made the night an even greater celebration!

Miss Leenders spoke about the profile of the arts within education, “The arts are such a critical part of what our school is about and it is so sad to see in so many schools these subjects wiped from the curriculum because of the narrowing curriculum and financial pressures faced by schools. To celebrate the continuing success of the Arts at Brentford School for Girls two former students spoke at the art exhibition about their experiences within the arts. Mounica Boja graduated from Central St Martins studying a BA Textile Design and now works as a Junior Consultant at Samuel and Sons in the Chelsea Harbour Design Centre. Rayan Elnayal who studied Architecture at Greenwich is presently doing an internship in an architecture firm before completing her MA. Both guests conveyed their enjoyment of the creative process and both were very grateful that they chose Brentford School for Girls.

As a faculty we are exceptionally proud of the amount of creative young women who go into creative degrees and secure posts in the ever changing world of mass communication. Long may the creative students come to our school and continue to flourish both in terms of results and professions.

In June we were delighted to welcome sixty Year 5 students from Smallberry Green School for a morning of creative workshops, which included cookery and felt badge making.

We had some wonderful comments from both staff and parent helpers which included “lovely to see ex-pupils sharing skills and being fantastic role models and a great opportunity for children to work in a secondary setting”.

Ms Rogers Food Technology teacher commented “We made pizza scones with twenty year 6 students who were ably assisted by five Year 8 students. The boys and girls showed excellent cutting and mixing skills and the finished result was worthy of any street cafe. I’m not sure many made it home as they were a great lunchtime treat” Ms Mullett added; “the Smallberry Green session was great, the children were well engaged and really enjoyed the workshop. It is always a pleasure meeting young pupils who then arrive a year later as new students!”

A big thank you to our Year 7 ex-Smallbery Green students who supported the sessions. We look forward to running more sessions next academic year.

Summer Fair

The Brentford School for Girls Summer Fair was a wonderful school and community event. There were plenty of activities these included; candy floss, cream teas, circus skills, Northfields Morris, BBQ, refreshments, Sara Ward from ‘Hen Corner’ selling homemade goods. Charities were also represented including Save the Children and the Alzheimer’s Society. It was a wonderful event.

We were also delighted that Tony Bowen, local musician, also known as the ‘Human Jukebox’ was able to join us before heading off to this year’s Glastonbury Festival. He provided the event with a wonderful set of songs.
