Head teacher’s welcome Dear Parents / Carers, As we draw to the end of another exciting and vibrant year in our school, I hope that you will enjoy reading about all of the fantastic opportunities that our students have been involved in across the term. It is incredibly important to us that the girls and boys (those in the sixth form) who are part of our community get a brilliant academic education. The additional confidence and skills that we try to develop in our students are equally as important to us here at Brentford. As you look through this terms edition of the Highlights magazine, I hope that you will see the variety of opportunities and activities that students have access to. Many of these opportunities are planned and organised by our own staff, even if they are delivered by external facilitators.

On behalf of the school, I would like to thank the staff for the extra mile they go to ensuring that all of the students receive a ‘whole education’ and not just the qualifications, which are of course equally important.

Speaking of student qualifications, the summer examinations were again an amazing success, with our students who sat GCSEs achieving better than most of the schools in England!

Our progress score was +70, which places us in the top 200 schools (4000 plus secondary schools in England), for the progress students made. This is an exceptional result and there were very few schools in the local authority who achieved such fantastic results. Again our A level results were also strong, with all of our students achieving places at the university of their choice: another great success. Our students’ dedication to their studies is really impressive and as we move into the internal exams season for some year groups, the students have built good study habits and are taking these very seriously.

We will always ensure that you receive notification of internal examinations a month in advance so that you can support your daughter in preparing for these. From next year we will also be sending you guidance and materials that you can use to support your daughter with her examinations, as well as offering more practical advice around managing stress during these periods.

The Christmas season brings our school community together as students and their families embrace the variety of celebratory events that are being held at the school. Please come and join us for the school fair or/and concert, it is always lovely to have parents join us at these events.

Chair of Governors Message Dear Parents / Carers and Staff, As I write this, I cannot believe that not only is another term over, but also another year. Personally, I love this time of year and am looking forward to indulging in the festive season at the school fayre and the concert in the church. Both events are a fantastic way to end the year, and of course, a chance to see the girls showcasing their talents.

It has been another busy term and it is fantastic to see the great number of extra curricular activities and how popular they are.

None of them would be possible without our amazing staff and the Sixth Form students, so a huge thank you to them all.

The exam results in the summer were a credit to all of the hard work the students put in and I know the students in the upper years are already working hard in preparation for next summer.

Good luck to them all.

Next term will be here before we know it. I know this year’s school production is a definite date for your diaries and one that the students always look forward to.

Friday 29th September saw a collective fundraising effort from the whole school. The fundraising began at break time with a cake sale for staff which was superbly organised by Ms Davies the school Well-Being Co-ordinator. The fundraising continued at lunchtime where there was a fabulous cake sale

On the 20th October Brentford School for Girls, both staff and students, were encouraged to wear pink. Everyone who did come in wearing pink was asked to make a donation towards Breast Cancer Research. At lunchtime, in the hall, we held our House competition.

All of the students in each of the houses came up with ideas about how they would raise money and the house who raised the most money would win. At lunchtime the hall was full of students across all year groups and there was a lovely atmosphere. We had popcorn, candyfloss, cakes and lots of other fantastic stalls and activities going on.

The whole day was a real success with the lunchtime activities raising over £300 and together with the mufti money the school raised over £800 for Breast Cancer Awareness. At Brentford we are keen to promote our links with local primary schools. During the last half term Ms Pyke, teacher of Art and Photography was invited alongside a group of Year 13 students to work with the Year 5 children at Isleworth Primary school. Together, they created some printed patchworks linked to Harriet Tubman as part of Black History month.

The Brentford School Charitable Trust have held two meetings this term. The aim is to bring together parents/carers and staff to fundraise for the school. The Trust are in discussion as to what the priorities are for the school and this will be fed-back to ensure the fundraising is focused and links directly back into school.

There have already been some wonderful ideas to start the fundraising including: • A Christmas wrapping stall • Staff v Parent cricket match – running a BBQ and refreshments • Alumni summer ball – running the refreshments Additional ideas being looked into include cash-back schemes. Parents/carers relatives who spend at various retail shops online could enable retailers to give cash-back to the school as a thank you, feeding into fundraising.

On Thursday 19th October we held a Year 7 Accelerated A 2018 date for your diary Thursday 18th January 4pm – 5pm Reader workshop. The workshop was an opportunity for this meeting will be focused on choosing a Chair, Vice-Chair parents to hear from Ms Baker (Head Librarian) and Ms and Honorary Secretary.

O’Sullivan (Assistant Librarian). The workshop covered all aspects of the Accelerated Reader programme, and how to support your daughters with their reading. This was followed Brentford school for girls by a useful question and answer session; towards the end of brentford 6 form the workshop the parents were joined by their daughters for some shared reading. It was lovely event and we had some wonderful feedback. ‘So You Want to be a …’ lunches In November, we were delighted to host Georgia Ingham and Isabelle Young from Lloyds Bank as part of our term’s ‘So You Want to be a…’ lunch time speaker programme.

Careers to success paving the way

Isabelle, an associate in the Financial Sponsors team and Georgia, an analyst in the Trade, Receivables & Supplier team offered students an insight into their daily tasks. Georgia and Isabelle talked through various progression routes into banking including apprenticeships. They also provided details of the Lloyds Scholar’s programme, designed to help On 17th November, Brentford School hosted our very own undergraduate students, throughout their time at university, FUTURES careers and Higher Education fair in the 6th Form achieve stronger skills and progress onto graduate level centre. 14 universities attended alongside representatives employment. Over the next 18 months Leyla, who has a place on the Languages and Literature stream, will take part in a range of activities including: sessions on study and revision skills, time management advice, employability training and a 5 day summer school at Kings.

The K+ programme kicked off on 20th November with an evening of informative lectures for students and their parents at KCL’s Waterloo campus. Layla said: “‘it was exciting and motivational to get to know like-minded people who want to apply to and who are currently doing an undergraduate degree in English Literature. I’m beginning to feel more like I’m making an informed decision about my career and post18 options.” Good Luck Leyla!

Congratulations to Mab Abdelwab (Year 11) who has recently completed over 3 months volunteering at the London Museum of Water and Steam for her Duke of Edinburgh bronze award.

Congratulations to 6th Former Marya Noorzai who has been accepted onto the Connect Mentoring Scheme offered in partnership with Spark! ‘Connect’ is an all women mentoring scheme where 50 students from across schools in Hounslow are paired with business women at GSK, the global healthcare company based in Brentford. Marya will receive 6 one and a half hour mentoring sessions at GSK House between December 2017 – February 2018. Sessions will focus on developing her CV, time management, setting goals and personal strengths. The aim of the mentoring is to give the students tools to structure and develop their career aspirations. Good luck to Marya!

Rebecca Hussein (Education Officer) says “the museum could not run without the support of its volunteers. From working on front of house to driving and maintaining our engines, they are the heart and soul of the Museum. Volunteering at the Museum is a great opportunity to boost your CV, make friends and have a truly rewarding experience! Congratulations to all students who received vInspired certificates this term: over 800 hours worth! At the end of the summer term certificates for 100 hours volunteering, the top award from vInspired, went to the following students in Year 11: Olivia Pazdziorny, Noor-Un-Nisa Choudhry, Tina Satta, Aneesa Wahid and Sanjhida Mayen Uddin. Since the summer holidays students across all year groups have been busy volunteering both in school and out. Students who received awards:

Megan Arnold, in Year 11, aspires to become a Photographer in the future or work in the Travel and Tourism industry. Her passion is Pop Punk music and in her spare time Megan travels around the UK (and beyond) to follow her favourite bands on tour. In doing this, Megan has managed to combine her personal interests with gaining valuable experience by photographing her favourite bands. Megan then uses Adobe Lightroom software to edit her photos at home, posts them on her Instagram account and increases her online presence.

Jackson Experience’. This is a student led club that has packed the theatre every Thursday lunchtime; it is a spectacle to say the least. In addition to social clubs we have a high attendance and breakfast club and lunchtime club where girls have been completing homework and individual study. I would like to thank all of the students who have participated in a club and especially all the staff who have given up their time to run a club for the benefit of our students.

knitting and stitching show The 6th Form textiles students went to the knitting and stitching show at Alexander Palace to gain inspiration for their coursework. The exhibition showcased the work of many of the most innovative textiles designers and artists currently working, and also student work from some of the best art colleges. The students appreciated seeing a range of textile work first-hand and having the opportunity to talk to the designers and artists, getting tips, ideas and advice.

Spring clubs will be available for sign up in the next couple of weeks. Please have a chat to your daughter to see what clubs she would like to sign up to. If she is not currently participating in a club, please encourage her to do so. There are many benefits to participation in clubs including exercise, stress relief, meeting new people and the development of confidence.

Most importantly participating in a club is just downright fun!

Bushy park science trip Year 13 attended a trip to Bushy Park where they learnt how to use quadrats to estimate density and percentage cover of

Every Wednesday afternoon, four specially trained university students have been attending Brentford to deliver fun interactive lessons on debating. The students are doing extremely well and their confidence in public speaking is growing weekly. I am looking forward to seeing our girls go up against other students in the local area and across London.

The story revolves around a dance loving teen Tracy Turnblad in 1960s Baltimore. Tracy auditions for a spot on “The Corny Collins Show” and wins. She becomes an overnight celebrity, a trendsetter in dance, fun and fashion. Perhaps her new status as a teen sensation is enough to topple Corny’s reigning dance queen and bring racial integration to the show, and end the segregation of her and her friends.

Rehearsals have been full on since September and the students are working hard to learn all their lines, songs and dances. The performances will take place on Thursday 8th February and Friday 9th February at 19:00. Tickets are now on sale from Miss Marsh in A5 at break and afterschool or can be reserved via email kmarsh@brentford.hounslow.sch. uk. Tickets are £4.

Cross Country On Tuesday 21st of November nine students took part in the Borough Cross Country Tournament. There were some fantastic performances including Zakia Mossi winning the Year 8 and 9 race. Zakia Mossi, Isabel Rodgers and Tallulah Paisley have all won a place on the Hounslow Team. They will be competing at the next competition in February. Well done girls!

Cheerleading Cheerleading started this half term and has been extremely popular. The girls have been learning to stunt, cheer and dance. If you are interested in joining cheerleading after Christmas please see Ms Ashworth in Curie Gym.

Glp conference

Brentford joined the Future Youth Schools Forum at the end of 2016 and our first forum was run in the Summer of 2017.

The topic last year was ‘People Forced to Flee’ or ‘Forced Migration’ which covers a wide spectrum but includes refugees and we decided to run our forum during Refugee Week. We hosted two other schools, St John Laws from Harpenden and Woodside High from Wood Green and we also took over Oxfam Campaigns Twitter for the day. The resultant actions we took as a school have been to send hundreds of postcards to MPs as part of a campaign to help change the law regarding refugee children and their parents and it has made a difference. Lobbying has resulted in a private members bill being discussed in Parliament next March.

Brentford School for Girls has been a leading expert centre for global learning with a successful network of 17 schools for the last 2 and half years. During this time we have run the Creative Conference on Human Rights with local primaries, the teacher’s conference on Media and Global Learning, P4C (Philosophy for Children) and Critical Thinking at the Brentford Watermans Arts Centre as well as working closely with RISE online and Oxfam UK as part of our expanding internationalism remit. In recognition of our extensive and successful work we were invited to present at the GLP (Global Learning Programme) Expert Centre Conference in Central London in October, one of only two schools from across the UK. Four students from the Oxfam Forum Group shouldered the entire responsibility for this. Sophia Louis (Year 13) prepared a brilliant presentation and along with Abigail Luwawa (Year 13), Shikha Dahal (Year 9) and Muska Kakar (Year 8) they gripped the attention of a very discerning adult and student audience for 20mins. Teachers, Head teachers, global charity executives, the senior leadership team of the GLP and representatives from DFID (Department for International Development) applauded loudly after being amusingly upbraided on their lack of global awareness through a sharp Q and A. Afterwards the girls were praised for their confidence, knowledge and passion for internationalism.

This year our topic is Gender Equality. Already the students As a result of this outstanding representation of our school, 6 have run two sets of assemblies on presenting some of secondary schools from across London have already signed the extra-ordinary and troubling facts about the gender up to be a part of next year’s Oxfam Gender Equality forum to inequalities which still persist across the world. The big thing is again the scale of the issue and to start the critical thinking, we began our international conversations in October with a massive online webinar with students in Poland, Italy, Lithuania and Cyprus as well as Oxfam UK and Oxfam Italia. We were delighted to host a visit from Sophie McKenzie on Thursday 5th of October. Sophie is the award-winning teen author of many thrillers and romances. Her series Missing and Medusa Project have been very popular with our student readers.

The role of Prefect is an important one and students will be accepting a position of considerable responsibility, giving the opportunity to develop leadership skills and have significant influence on the daily life of the school.

Sophie is currently touring and promoting her new book Sweetfreak. This is a gripping page-turner about friendship and online bullying. “Carey and Amelia have been best friends forever. Then Amelia starts being trolled by SweetFreak, a mysterious and hateful online account, and Carey is accused of being behind the vicious comments and threats.�

Our Year 7 students enjoyed listening to Sophie who talked about her writing and inspirations behind her stories. Sally and Anya represented their peers and asked a variety of interesting questions.

Hounslow Teen Read

Brentford Prefects have proven they are hardworking, motivational young women who have taken on the role with gusto and who are making a great contribution to school life.

On Thursday 16th November, 17 students went to the Hounslow Teen Read Launch.

Marcus Alexander was the guest author. He was very engaging and inspirational for the students and librarians! He talked about all the countries he has visited and activities he has done, including scuba diving, climbing and sports from different countries. All these things enable him to write his books. After his talk, the students were able to ask questions, all of which he answered with great enthusiasm. At the end of the session, the shortlist was announced and Teen Read officially launched.

black history month The school library celebrated Black History Month by attending an event organized by Schools Library Service in Hounslow. Tony Dallas, who facilitated this session, supported students from across the borough in thinking about their cultural backgrounds. Toni lead a special Black History themed poetry slam. A group of students from 7CN created a range of short poems and all taking part received book prizes.

On Wednesday, 11 October our Year 12s and Year 13s took part in the annual PSHCE day at Brentford School for girls.

Year 12 headed out for a Safe Drive Stay Alive seminar at Questors theatre in Ealing. This interactive presentation features many hard-hitting stories from relatives and friends of people who have been killed behind the wheel. The aim of the day was to enlighten our Year 12s about the importance of safety behind the wheel. Once debriefed on the Safe Drive Stay Alive seminar our Year 12 students took part in a boxing and yoga session which highlighted the importance of physical well-being during these academically demanding two years in sixth form. Here’s what some of our students had to say about the day: “It was really shocking to hear the stories from the people at Safe Drive Stay Alive… I am going to make sure that I am a safe driver when I begin to learn.”

Annette, who is studying ‘Costume for Performance’ at London College of Fashion, visited the school to give a talk on her field. Her course is for students interested in designing and making costumes for performance. This includes costumes for theatre, film, music and television.

Annette brought in many of the products that she has made to show to the students, including a replica Victorian bodice.

She explained to the students the different approaches to costume design and manufacture depending on how they would be used.

psHce drop down day Year 13 followed a different program, aimed at preparing them for independent life, as some students will be leaving home and going to university in a few short months. The day involved cooking a three-course meal for £5, teambuilding with Ms. Brown and an interactive seminar on University life ran by Mr. Minors and Ms. Partington. During the cookery session, the groups created a range of scrumptious meals including stirfries, vegetable pasta dishes, tarte-tartin and stuffed peppers.

The students were amazed at how cheaply and easily they were able to create delicious dishes.

As part of the course Annette has undertaken different work experience placements, including working for photographer Tim Walker and an internship at the Royal College of Ballet, in their costume department.

Annette also gave the students advice on portfolio content and the application process for both foundation and textile degree courses.

The students fully appreciated the visit and were inspired by Annette’s experiences and the advice given.

“I found Annette inspirational and she has guided me to where I would like to be after my A levels, it’s great to see that someone from Brentford can be doing such an exciting course.” Priya Arri.

Overall, the students had lots of fun and learned a huge amount about preparing themselves for life outside of Brentford School for Girls.

co-op presentation once again worked really hard in supporting the school with nominating us for this project for a second time and for their on-going support sponsoring us at other functions throughout the year, we are all extremely grateful”.

Brentford School for Girls were delighted to receive £1295.96 from The Co-op Local Community fund. The school’s local Coop on Boston Manor Road Brentford supported the school as one of their local charity causes. In total there are more than 4,000 causes across the UK that benefit from the community fund awards which are supporting and making a difference in local communities. Every time a customer purchased a product from the Boston Manor store over the six month period 1% of the customer’s total spend went towards the school.

Two students from the school were able to go to meet Mr Shah and his staff to thank them all personally.

Big draw Members of the public and students from Brentford School for Girls worked with Ceritude and artists Nicki Rolls and Lynsey Storer from Redlees Studio to create artwork in response to ‘Living Lines’ for the Big Draw. Miriam Spinelli played classical and Jazz music throughout the day and this added to the energy and ambience of the event.

Participants used maps as a starting point for ‘Living Lines’; a range of materials were used for drawing from traditional media such as pencil and pen and extended to wire and 3D resources.

mentor matcher Mentor MatcHER have worked with some of the country’s most inspirational women in business such as Amanda Wakeley OBE, her CEO, Ahyla Fateh, Sarah Curran MBE, Alex Box, Caroline Hirons and Melissa Odabash along with celebrity florist Nikki Tibbles and Sharmadean Reid MBE, to name a few. They have also collaborated with some of the world’s leading brands, Burberry, Bulgari, Condè Nast and the Vogue Cafè through their initiative.

In early October Ms Giddens Head of Year 10 was delighted to welcome Mentor MatcHER to deliver a workshop to our Y10 students coinciding with the run up to International Mentoring Day on October 27th.

It was an amazing opportunity for our Year 10 students to hear Mariams journey, Ebony (Year 10 student) commented “I thought the session was great with very good advice, I would love them to come back and run some future sessions.”

Mentor MatcHER are one of the UK’s leading female mentoring initiative that is committed to transforming the lives of women of all ages through mentorship and education.

MatcHER was founded by the phenomenal Mariam Mola after giving birth to her daughter in prison and seeing the lack of support available to women in business and the work place.

Mariam, alongside several of her mentors, one of which was one of our former student Olamide Ogunseye discussed various topics pertaining to females which included entrepreneurship and leadership. Ola said: “It was a great opportunity to come back to Brentford School For Girls and impact the students in such a way. It is evident to see that Mrs Leenders, alongside the teachers, are doing an incredible job.

Brentford is a big part of my journey and I’m looking forward to giving back to the young women.”

drug education workshop Here at Brentford School for Girls, we had the fantastic opportunity to invite an upcoming singer, Calum Foad, into our school. Calum was delivering a drug education and life skills themed schools tour and has been travelling to various areas around the UK and visiting up to 30 schools in London. Calum not only performed for the pupils, he also delivered messages about drugs and peer pressure message supporting the programs developed by charity D.A.R.E.

Calum Foad is a 21 year old singer / songwriter from Berkshire. Calum has been tipped by BBC’s Radio 1 as the next big British male singer being compared to Olly Murs.

Calum has been singing and playing guitar for over 10 years and last year supported McBusted on tour. He will soon be heading off to LA to work with some huge songwriters.

This program has toured to more than 3,600 schools around the UK and Ireland, with a mix of different artists who have had outstanding reviews. The programme has been so successful that it is being taken over to the USA. The pupils watch a unique and entertaining performance from the artists, which is followed by an interactive Drug education message which empowers students to make healthy lifestyle choices.
