I am delighted to welcome you to our thriving and high achieving co-educational Sixth Form, inviting applications from within the school and outside for ambitious young women and men. Young people who choose ‘Brentford’ achieve outstanding results, as well as experiencing the many excellent and enriching opportunities that our Sixth Form has to offer. Our vision is to equip our students with the qualifications, skills, qualities and experiences that prospective universities and employers are searching for. Building confidence, developing resilience and encouraging ‘you’, the students, to have the very highest of aspirations, is central to our vision of the Brentford sixth former. Our students make more progress than they do in many other local sixth forms and colleges, and we are especially proud of the excellent track record we have securing places for our students’ into the very top Russell Group universities. For others, who do not choose to go to university, our Sixth Form will support you in gaining the very best routes into employment or an apprenticeship. Our curriculum offer is exceptionally broad with over 60 courses, both A level and BTEC offered at Brentford or at one of our partner schools who can facilitate your request. Our enrichment curriculum will provide you with an outstanding number of new opportunities. All of our Students are encouraged to get involved in sport, join one of the many Sixth Form ‘Societies’, lead the drama productions, attend the numerous trips and visits on offer and get involved in various community and voluntary activities, all available to support you in building confidence, team spirit, and leadership skills. Students are also actively encouraged to join in with the various social activities run by the Sixth Form team, including trips abroad, day trips to London, evening theatre trips, the Sixth Form prom and many other activities run at the school. At Brentford, our sixth formers benefit from the use of modern and specialist facilities, including a designated Sixth Form block with study and social spaces. The Head of Sixth Form as well as a team of experienced tutors, the support of the pastoral manager and study support supervisor ensure that all of our students receive the very best pastoral care. This ensures that not only do our students thrive and achieve exceptional examination results, but they are also looked after and supported well through their journey into adulthood. curriculum and Teaching

There are over 60 courses available for our students to choose from at Brentford Sixth Form. Students can choose from either traditional A level courses, to BTEC and other vocational qualifications, or a mixture of both. Teaching is always outstanding and lessons range from lecture style, to students going out on location to film ‘life on the streets of London’. Most of our classes are small, allowing you to get the individual support and teaching that you will require to achieve outstanding results. You will be taught by a group of outstanding teachers who are subject specialists and are enthusiastic and passionate practitioners in their fields, many of whom themselves graduated from Russell Group universities. Outstanding teaching and support is the focus of everything we do! Our key focus will always be to ensure that you develop independence in learning and confidence so that whatever life throws at you in the future, you will always be ready to embrace it.

Student support

The ethos that every student counts and the family feel cultivated in the Sixth Form, ensure that the Sixth Form at Brentford is a nurturing and friendly place to be. (Ofsted 2016)There is a real community feel in the Sixth Form where students’ differences are embraced and celebrated. The excellent pastoral care ensures that no matter what the challenge or need, the Sixth Form team will always be ready to support you. There are numerous opportunities for students, many of whom may not have been students at the school through from Year 7, to mix socially as well as academically. For new students joining Brentford, there is a rigorous induction programme and for those moving from Year 11, a bridging course to help you adjust to the new style of learning required at post-sixteen. The relationships between staff and students are excellent. There is an ethos of mutual respect. Students are always very respectful and staff ensure that they acknowledge the growing maturity of the students.

enrichment activities

As well as classroom learning it is essential that our Brentford sixth formers embrace all of the other opportunities on offer in our school. We offer students the opportunity to develop their teamwork and leadership skills through a programme of bespoke enrichment activities, ensuring that we have something for everyone. Students are encouraged to embrace these opportunities in order to develop those wider skills that universities and employers are looking for. Some examples of our provision are listed below; • Sports activities, football, netball, basketball, self-defence. • Newnham and Sutton Trust programmes- These programmes identify students with exceptional ability and aptitude early on in their studies. Students involved in the programmes are able to take part in the extended project qualification and are encouraged to build links with Russell group universities, such as Oxford and Cambridge • International trips to France, India and Italy • Theatre trips • Subject based trips • Quiz evening and live music events • BBQs and Film Nights • Careers talks • University visits, summer schools

Future planning & guidance

We see your Sixth Form experience as a journey and we pride ourselves in the excellent careers advice and subject choice guidance you will receive as part of your application process to our Sixth Form. Our careers guidance lead is attached to our Sixth Form team and opportunities to understand what is on offer in the next stages of the journey are provided for all students through a range of events including, university visits, Russell group university summer schools, visits to local businesses, speakers from different industries, mentoring from some of our business partners and work experience visits. Our aim is always to ensure that the Brentford student gets access to the very best opportunities so that when you apply to university or decide to move into employment, your chances of success are maximised significantly. Our Brentford University programme will help to support you in applying to university, from making the right choices, to support with writing personal statements and siting entrance exams if required. Many of our past students have been accepted into the very best of the country’s universities and continue to work closely with the school supporting our current students through the Brentford School Alumni scheme.

Developing leadership

Your experience at Brentford will provide you with numerous opportunities to develop as a confident, articulate future leader. We expect all of our students to take an active role in school life within the Sixth Form and act as ambassadors to the lower school and local community. Building the skills necessary for future success involves developing teamwork and leadership skills, as well as being emotionally aware and emotionally literate. The leadership opportunities tailored specifically for our Sixth Form will ensure that these skills are developed and harnessed so that you are well prepared for the future, whatever that future may look like as well as providing a plethora of experience to add to any successful university application. Specialist facilities

The school is especially proud of its excellent Sixth Form facilities. Our modern and well-resourced Sixth Form study area is an excellent place to work and socialise in. The high ceilings and studious atmosphere make this an ideal place to complete independent silent study, whilst the café style ‘Chill out’ areas provide an opportunity for you to socialise and meet with other students. The Sixth Form centre provides a unique space where students can be separated from the main school for both study and socialising. Our study area is supervised during the school day and the facilities are open from early in the morning and after the school day has ended. We have excellent resources across the school to support the learning of students at both A’ level and those studying on BTEC courses. Our students are taught across the school in order to take advantage of the specialist facilities within departments.
