A Tribute To Mother the taste of her cooking that can be duplicated by no one. Unforgettable are the aromas of the house at Thanksgiving and Christmas when the air would be filled with the smell of sweet potato pies baking in the oven, ham, turkey, greens, and so many other great meals as Mother performed her magic. Even the horrid smell of “chit-lins” (chitterlings) was special as Mother would spend hours at the sink cleaning them, hours on the stove cooking them; but once they were done, it did not take long for the family to devour them!

She always been there, my entire life! As early as I can remember as a child, I could always count on Mother. I can even remember when she used to dress me when I was too young to dress myself. When I would fall and get hurt, I could always run to mother and she would make the hurt stop hurting. There were times when I was sick with colds, flu, and even strep throat, and I could see the worry and concern in Mother’s face as she cared for me and even took me to the doctor when she felt it was necessary. When I went to bed not feeling well, or very sick, I can remember being awaken in the night by Mother’s hand on my forehead and neck as she checked my temperature and made sure I was alright. At the age of 15, I nearly died, had it not been for the Motherly love and institution that told her that I needed to be taken to the hospital immediately!

The memories of Mother transcend even the physical senses; the visual memories, the unique sound of her voice, her special touch, the fragrances that she wore, and even June/July 2019

Through the good times and the bad, the ups and downs of growing up, Mother was always there, regardless of what was needed. She always had the extraordinary ability to know exactly what was wrong and exactly what was needed. Even in a house of seven children, she knew the strengths, weaknesses, shortcomings and personalities of each child. Mother could ‘look’ at a situation around the house and knew exactly which of the seven children was responsible for it. Her accuracy rate is still 100% A Mother was God’s special gift to mankind. Mother’s are SuperWomen in their own right. They can tell from the whimper of a child whether it is hungry, wet, or just making some noise. The Motherly intuition is something that she never looses, and even as we grow into adulthood, Mother still always knows what is best. The 5th of the Ten Commandments tells us to Honor our Fathers and our Mothers, and this is the first of the Ten Commandments that has a ’promise’ attached to it; and that promise is that our days will be long upon the land. Regardless of how old we get or how old our Mother gets; she should always be held in the highest esteem for the duration of our entire life. This special gift of

a Mother is something that you only get ’one’ of in life, and when she is gone, she is gone. Mother’s Day 2019 will be the first time in 57 years that Mother is not here. It is the first Mother’s Day when she will not received a card from me. She will not receive flowers from me. She will not receive a hug, a kiss, or an I Love You.

My Mother is gone now, and all that’s left are the memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

Over the course of the last 18 years, the roles of Mother of and Son slowly reversed. I had the honor, privilege, and pleasure, of taking care of my Mother during her declining years. She spent the first 18 years of my life taking care of me; I was able to spend the last 18 years of her life taking care of her. On this Mother’s Day 2019, I would like to encourage everyone who has a living Mother, to spend a little more time with her. Be a little more patient with her. Hold her a little closer. Hold her a little tighter. Tell her that you love her a little bit more. For God has appointed us all bounds that we cannot pass. 

Belonging to a family that has grown to the point that it is referred to as a "nation" could make you feel just a little lost, but not this month's SPOTLIGHT couple! They shine too brightly not to stand out in any crowd! Deacon Robert L. Barnum, Jr., and his lovely and gracious wife, Sarah, have been staples at First Union Missionary Baptist Church for many, many years, and are high-ranking members in this nation made up partly by members of the Mosley/Calloway/Barnum/ Williams families and their extensions. This God-fearing couple will celebrate forty-one years of marriage on October 11th of this year. They are the proud, loving parents of three daughters; Kim Williams, Angalia Whicker-Tabor (deceased), and Tenesia Calloway. They are grandparents to three girls and two boys; Khadijiah Boone, Sentavia Tabor, and Cyenna Watts (deceased) are the children of Angalia; Taveon

they are loved and respected and looked upon as leaders in both the community and The 'U'. During their time at First Union, they have both been very active in ministries throughout the years. Sarah currently serves in the Deaconess Ministry and Culinary ministries, with former services rendered to the Youth Department and the Special Chorus. Robert is also a Former head of the Deacon Board, member of the Special Chorus and is currently serving as the Deacon Advisor to the Youth Department, a member of the Male Chorus, Mission and as a Trustee of the Church.

Sarah lives her life by the golden rule: "Treat others as you want to be treated!" and Kavon Calloway are the children of Tenesia. Two great-grands have become part of the nation by way of Khadijiah (mother of Kenzie Williams) and Sentavia (mother of London Bradley). The Barnums have been long-standing members of First Union Missionary Baptist Church (lovingly referred to as The 'U'). Sarah, being a blood member of the nation, has been attached to First Union the majority of her life, while Robert, joined First Union in the late '70searly 80s. These two have built their legacy as a couple inside and outside of the Church. Known as being 'all about family', June/July 2019

Outside of the Church, they are known as the couple who owned and operated Barnum's Upholstery and Interior, a small and local community business that not only served the community but also the Tampa Bay area for twenty -five years. And although the doors of this family-owned business has since closed it's doors, the reputation of the fine work that was produced from this business is still talked about today.

Women's Entrepreneurial Empowerment After spending a year traveling two hours one round-trip twice a month attending networking meetings, jumping at every opportunity to attend networking meetings locally, and after traveling thousands of miles and spending hundreds of dollars in marketing materials and still not seeing any business growth, Sabrina Farmer-Protic came to the conclusion that more was needed than just to meet, greet, and eat. Structure with purpose was missing. W.E.E. (Women's Entrepreneurial Empowerment), an organization founded by Sabrina (center in photo below), is a networking venue for women entrepreneurs. The organization's objective is to empower these entrepreneurs through a platform of visibility and education, to support growth, promote strategic business development and community enrichment.

Some women balance employment and running a business/side hustle. Wives and mothers are operating businesses from home, while millennials choose to start businesses fresh out of school. Women of all ages including retirees are enjoying more fulfillment as CEO's of their companies.

We welcome the support of our community, the business sector, family, friends and

acquaintances for our events.

During the Protestant Reformation (circa 1500’s) apologetics was substantially replaced by polemics, in which many churches sought to defend their particular beliefs rather than Christianity as a whole; this time period was the conception and subsequent birth of the many ‘denominations’ that we have amongst the Christian faith today. The list of Biblical Apologist is long and extensive, and has weathered history since the departure of Jesus.  At first glance it appears to be an expression of regret or request for forgiveness. In modern English, when someone apologizes, they are expressing sorrow for an action of some type. But if you lived prior to 19th Century, the word “apology” has a very different meaning. In some regards, the definition of “apologetics” is completely opposite of the modern English definition. In its original form, the word “apology” meant to “defend”, not to express sorrow or regret. It further meant to stand firmly and boldly! In the 18th Century, the definition of the word “apologetics” was: “a branch of theology devoted to the defense of the divine origin and authority of Christianity” Throughout the course of history, there have been some great ‘Apologist’ who have stood for the Word of God. Although it may seem rather mundane in modern times; this has not always been the case. In the early centuries, Apologist were not only defending the Christian faith, but in many cases, they were defending their own life! For if they failed to convey their message, they were likely to be labeled as a ‘heretic’ or worse a ‘blasphemer’, which in both cases were considered crimes that warranted death! Many early century Apologist were executed in the most heinous manners. In the New Testament, the thrust of apologetics was defense of Christianity as the culmination of the Jewish religion and its prophecies concerning a Messiah. In the early church, the Apologists, such as Justin Martyr and Tertullian defended the moral superiority of Christianity over paganism and pointed out Christianity’s fulfillment of Hebrew Bible prophecies. Oregenes Adamantius, a 2nd–3rd-century Alexandrian philosophical theologian, stressed the supernatural witness of the Holy Spirit in Christian belief. The platonic theologian Augustine of Hippo, around the turn of the 4th century, presented Christianity as God’s answer to the fall of the Roman Empire, which the sin of humans was effecting. In the later Middle Ages, apologists focused on Christianity’s superiority over the rival religions of Judaism and Islām. In the 13th century, however, Thomas Aquinas developed a still-influential defense of belief in God based on Aristotelian theories of a first cause of the universe. During a time when man was becoming preoccupied with the stars and space, he argued that it was God Who created the entire universe, and not some big bang, evolution, or other ‘force’.

June/July 2019

There are many religions, denominations, and cults in the world today; so how are people supposed to know what is right and what is wrong? Couple this along with the mixed messages, and lack of messages, that are spewing from pulpits all across America, and all around the world, and we can clearly see the need for true apologist even in the 21st Century. One of the biggest dangers being taught these days is the lie that one God is not the only way! People are teaching that there are many ‘gods’ and there are many ways to that ‘god’. When influential lunatics such as these are telling people that there are many ways to whatever you consider to be as god, unlearned people are persuaded and in their ignorance, they accept such beliefs and follow to their own demise. Every person has a responsibility to learn the truths of God’s Word for themselves (2 Timothy 2:15), this is aided by men of God who have been commissioned by God to teach and preach the whole counsel of God (Acts 20:27). But there are also many warnings in Scripture, including warnings from the Lord Himself about those who would come with the intent of deception (Matthew 7:15: Matthew 24:24; Acts 20:29, 2 Corinthians 11:13). That time is now, and thus Christianity needs as many Apologist as possible to assist in the Great Commission of guiding lost souls out of darkness and into the marvelous light of Christ! During the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862, with an effective date of January 1, 1863. It declared all slaves to be freed in the Confederate States of America in rebellion and not in Union hands. This excluded the five states known later as border states, which were the four slave states that were not in rebellion—Kentucky, Maryland, Delaware, and Missouri—and those counties of Virginia soon to form the state of West Virginia, and also the three zones under Union occupation: the state of Tennessee, lower Louisiana and Southeast Virginia. More isolated geographically, Texas was not a battleground, and thus its slaves were not affected by the Emancipation Proclamation unless they escaped. Planters and other slaveholders had migrated into Texas from eastern states to escape the fighting, and many brought their slaves with them, increasing by the thousands the number of slaves in the state at the end of the Civil War. Although most slaves lived in rural areas, more than 1000 resided in both Galveston and Houston by 1860, with several hundred in other large towns. By 1865, there were an estimated 250,000 slaves in Texas. As news of end of the war moved slowly, it did not reach Texas until May 1865, and the Army of the Trans-Mississippi did not surrender until June 2. On June 18, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived at Galveston Island with 2,000 federal troops to occupy Texas on behalf of the federal government. On June 19, standing on the balcony of Galveston's Ashton Villa, Granger read aloud the contents of "General Order No. 3", announcing the total emancipation of slaves: The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed (continued on page -28-)

that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere. Former slaves in Galveston rejoiced in the streets after the announcement, although in the years afterward many struggled to work through the changes against resistance of whites. But, the following year, freedmen organized the first of what became annual celebrations of Juneteenth in Texas. Barred in some cities from using public parks because of state-sponsored segregation of facilities, across parts of Texas, freed people pooled their funds to purchase land to hold their celebrations, such as Houston's Emancipation Park, Mexia's Booker T. Washington Park, and Emancipation Park in Austin. Although the date is sometimes referred to as the "traditional end of slavery in Texas" it was given legal status in a series of Texas Supreme Court decisions between 1868 and 1874. In the early 20th century, economic and political forces led to a decline in Juneteenth celebrations. From 1890 to 1908, Texas and all former Confederate states passed new constitutions or amendments that effectively disenfranchised blacks, excluding them from the political process. White-dominated state legislatures passed Jim Crow laws imposing second-class status. The Great Depression forced many blacks off farms and into the cities to find work. In these urban environments, African Americans had difficulty taking the day off to celebrate. From 1940 through 1970, in the second wave of the Great Migration, more than 5 million blacks left Texas, Louisiana and other parts of the South for the North and West Coast, where jobs were available in the defense industry for World War II. As historian Isabel Wilkerson writes, "The people from Texas took Juneteenth Day to Los Angeles, Oakland, Seattle, and other places they went." By the 1950s and 1960s, the Civil Rights Movement focused the attention of African-American youth on the struggle for racial equality and the future. But, many linked these struggles to the historical struggles of their ancestors. Following the 1968 Poor People's Campaign to Washington, D.C. called by Rev. Ralph Abernathy, many attendees returned home and initiated Juneteenth celebrations in areas where the day was not previously celebrated.

at Christian Unity Baptist Church in New Orleans, Louisiana to work for greater national celebration of Juneteenth. Paul Herring Chairman of The Juneteenth Committee credits Mrs. E. Hill Deloney (Community Matriarch) for starting the celebration in Flint, Michigan in the late 1980s; as he said, "...It's a time to Reflect & Rejoice, because we are the children of those who chose to survive." Juneteenth informal observance have spread to many other states, including Portland, Maine, in part carried by Texans. Expatriates have celebrated it in cities abroad, such as Paris. Some US military bases in other countries sponsor celebrations, in addition to those of private groups. Organizations such as the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation are working toward gaining Congressional approval to designate Juneteenth as a national day of observance. Others are working to have its 150th anniversary celebrated worldwide. In 1980, Texas was the first state to establish Juneteenth as a state holiday under legislation introduced by freshman Democratic state representative Al Edwards.[15] Juneteenth is a "skeleton crew" day in the state; government offices do not close but agencies may operate with reduced staff. By 2008, nearly half of US states observed the holiday as a ceremonial observance. As of May 2016, when the Maryland legislature approved official recognition of the holiday, 45 of the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia have recognized Juneteenth as either a state holiday or ceremonial holiday, a day of observance. States that do not recognize it are Hawaii, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota and South Dakota. In 1996 the first legislation to recognize "Juneteenth Independence Day" was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives, H.J. Res. 195, sponsored by Barbara-Rose Collins (D-MI). In 1997 Congress recognized the day through Senate Joint Resolution 11 and House Joint Resolution 56. In 2013 the U.S. Senate passed Senate Resolution 175, acknowledging Lula Briggs Galloway (late president of the National Association of Juneteenth Lineage) who "successfully worked to bring national recognition to Juneteenth Independence Day", and the continued leadership of the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation. SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA

Since the 1980s and 1990s, the holiday has been more widely celebrated among African-American communities. In 1994 a group of community leaders gathered
