NEW ST. MATTHEW MB CHURCH

FRIENDSHIP MB CHURCH

FAMILY NIGHT @ THE 'U'

Guest Speaker: Dr. Marvin S. Hall, Sr.

D

r. Marvin Hall is a native of Brighton, TN in Tipton County. He received his primary and secondary education in the Tipton County School System. He is a 1978 graduate of Brighton High School. After his graduation from high school, Dr. Hall continued his educational pursuits with receipt of degrees from Dyersburg State Community College; Seminary Extension of the Southern Baptist Convention; Union University; Tennessee School of Religion; and Agape Christian School of Religion where he received his Doctorate of Theology. Dr. Hall accepted his call to ministry in 1982. His ministerial journey began as an Associate Minister at Smith Grove Baptist Church, Brighton, TN. Under the leadership and guidance of the church’s pastor, he grew in wisdom and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In 1984, Dr. Hall accepted the call to become the pastor of St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church, Covington, TN where he served faithfully for over 24 years. During his pastorate, he brought the church from under a 10year mortgage in less than10 years. Although deeply convicted to his ministry at St. Stephen, God affirmed that it was time for him to move on. He did, however, return to St. Stephen to conduct the church’s mortgage burning ceremony. In September 2008, Dr. Hall yielded to God’s Will and accepted the pastorate of Greater St. Luke Baptist Church in Jackson, TN. Upon his arrival at Greater St. Luke, he brought a passion to the ministry as an advocate for the building of God’s Kingdom which he discovered was also the church’s vision statement — “To equip and send forth Kingdom-building Torchbearers whose flame of the Holy Spirit guides the lost sheep to The Shepherd through Exhortation, Edification, and Evangelism.” Dr. Hall’s passion is ministry and servanthood. He has been continuously employed with the Tipton County Board of Education at Covington High School and the Teen Learning Center for 20 years. He believes that in that position he possesses a calling whereas he can serve and make a difference in the lives of young people with troubled lives. He is also the founder and CEO of Dare to Care Charitable Organization in Covington, TN another avenue through which the organization provided support to children’s care services in the community. On February 27, 1981, Dr. Hall married Patricia Ann Nelson of Covington, TN. They are the proud parents of four children, Dekesha, Tijuana, Marvin, Jr., and Cameron. Dr. Hall’s family roots include a family of ministers. Those roots branch out to include his four brothers who are in the ministry. He believes this serves as proof that God has blessed the Hall family to be a blessing to many through the proclamation of the Word. Dr. Hall continues to serve God faithfully at home, throughout the community when the call is given. He continues to attract people to his ministry with his charismatic personality, contagious humor, and positive attitude. He is also a talented and gifted singer. His dynamic preaching has afforded him the opportunity to travel nationally preaching the Word of God. Amen.

Bruce Eric Garmon

was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His father was the late Rev. Dr. Moses Garmon; his mother is Mrs. Ada Mae Garmon. He is the sixth child in a family of seven children; three boys and four girls - in this order: Arthur, Bill, Cindy, Linda, Gwen, Bruce, and Karen. Bruce attended Henry Elementary School in Grand Rapids until the 5th grade at which time he was placed in an advanced educational program for advanced students. He later attended Burton Middle School and graduated from Ottawa Hills High School Class of 1980 with high honors as a four-year member of the National Honor Society.

After High School, Bruce enlisted and served three years in the United States Marine Corps. After receiving a medical discharge from the Marine Corps due to a back condition, he began working for Meijer Incorporated, a very large corporation in the Midwest. He spent seventeen more years at Meijer and held various positions including Supervisory; Building Manager, and Construction Manager.

On September 17, 1982 Bruce married Carla Renee Dean, a friend of his sister Karen since early childhood elementary school days. Bruce commonly refers to his wedding day as “the happiest day of my life! To this marriage God blessed them with three children; Jermaine, Bruce Jr., and Erica, and seven grandchildren.

Although Bruce accepted Christ at the age of 10 in 1972 and was baptized by Rev. R.L. Johnson, Pastor of the Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, Grand Rapids, Michigan; he later strayed away from the Lord in his ‘teen’ years. But God had other plans for Bruce’s life. In December of 1982 Bruce accepted his call into the Ministry after nearly four years of wrestling with the Lord. Because he was so young (age 20) he could not understand why God would call one who knew nothing of Him (God), and nothing of His Word. But nevertheless, in December of 1982 he surrendered to God’s call and in January of 1983 he preached his first sermon entitled: “The Last Will And Testament Of Our Lord Jesus”.

Now Rev. Garmon, his call into the Ministry was not just a preaching call, but it was also a “teaching” call; this is something that he realized and acknowledged right from the beginning. Rev. Garmon enrolled at International Bible Institute and Seminary in 1983 and received an Associate’s Degree in Ministry. He attended Triune Biblical University from 1987 – 1989 during which time he received the following educational accomplishments: Bachelor of Arts in Christian Education. Bachelor of Science in Theology, Bachelors of Arts in Apologetics. In 1990 Rev. Garmon re-enroll ed at Triune Biblical University and later received his Master’s of Divinity degree majoring in the areas of Christian Education and Theology. Among his educational accomplishments can be added; Licensed Auto Mechanic in the State of Michigan, Construction Management Degree from the University of Wisconsin; Licensed General Contractor in the State of Florida; and he has a desire to one day complete his Doctorate in Divinity degree.

In April of 1990, the Church building of The Prince of Peace was destroyed by fire. Rev. Dr. Moses Garmon was the Pastor at the time and assigned his son, Rev. B.E. Gamon, Sr. to be in charge of the re-construc tion of the new building. It was complete in October of 1990 at which time Rev. Garmon’s job called him to work in Dayton, Ohio. He spent the next five years in Ohio. In the fall of 1995, Rev. Dr. Moses Garmon felt the call of the Lord to retire and the members of The Prince of Peace called Rev. B.E. Garmon, Sr. to be their Pastor.

On the first Sunday in December 1995; Rev. Bruce E. Garmon, Sr. was formally installed as Pastor of The Prince Of Peace Missionary Baptist Church; there were approximately 35 members. For the next 2-1/2 years Pastor Garmon attempted to Pastor the Church and continue working full-time. It wasn’t long before he realized that this was too much. The Church was growing rapidly as a result of God’s blessings, and his work at his job and at the Church were suffering. Taking a “HUGE” leap of faith, Pastor Garmon quit his job June 1, 1998 and began Pastoring full time. God has continued to be with him and his family and that leap of faith turned out to be the best decision he could have ever made.

For the next six years, Pastor Garmon led The Prince of Peace to new heights and accomplishments. Not only was his work at the Church notable, but His work in the Community became very wide spread as well: • • • • • • • • • •

Certified Instructor for the Wolverine State Baptist Convention President of the Northern Michigan Baptist District Association Chairman of the Racial Justice Institute Immediate Response Team Parliamentarian of the Inter-Denominational Ministerial Alliance Board of Directors of the Grand Rapids Area Center for Ecumenism. Police Chief’s Action Committee Guiding Light Mission Mel Trotter Mission Co-Chaplain Kent County Jail Founder of Watchman Ministry, Inc.

Pastor Garmon was well known in the Community and the membership toppled over 200 and a building program was underway. It was at this time that God decided, it was time to move. There were seven associate Members at The Prince of Peace, and God could (and would) continue “HIS work there with one of them; but he needed Pastor Garmon to move on. On December 31, 2003, Pastor Garmon tendered his resignation to the Church and the very next Sunday installed his successor, Rev. Eula C. Gaddis, II. On January 25, 2004, Pastor Garmon and his family then moved to Tampa (Brandon) Florida in the Spring of 2004.

For the next 3+ years, Rev. Garmon maintained ”Watchman Ministry”; a Ministry dedicated to the education of God’s people in the area of Eschatology, study of the End Times. However, as he continued to seek direction from the Lord, Rev. Garmon was led to First Union Missionary Baptist Church in September 2007. In October 2008, the Congregation selected him as their current Pastor where he has been serving for the past 8+ years, and counting. In a very short period of time, the heartbeat of First Union was invigorated! Ministries have been revived, and many new Ministries have been implemented. The Church Calendar is teaming with opportunities for Worship, Fellowship, and Discipleship. God has also blessed the leadership of Pastor Garmon with a stalwart Deacon Staff and has filled the pulpit with a Ministerial Staff of men to aid and assist the Pastor.

It is a proven fact that a Church will take on the personality of its Pastor, and this is definitely the Pastor to have if you want to learn more about the Word of God, grow Spiritually, and have a great time living the life of a Christian! Pastor Garmon’s leisure activities include jet skiing, bowling, motorcycle riding and roller skating. However, his number one leisure activity is studying the Word of God!
