The Serenity Prayer

G

od grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time; accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; taking, as He did, this sinful world As it is, not as I would have it; Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will; so that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him forever and ever in the next. Amen. (prayer attributed to Reinhold Neibuhr, 1892-1971)

Jessica Williams, Assistant Editor Give the Gift of Jesus by Deborah Ann Belka

This Christmas . . . I'm decorating my heart, with the wrappings of His love. Tying a ribbon around my soul, with His blessings from above. I going to avoid all the malls, and stop not at a single store. The only present I will give, is the One that will restore. I'm giving the gift of forgiveness, sending cards about His grace. I'm letting the glory of His birth, beam across my thankful face. I'm opening up my home, for everyone to come and see. The light of His beauty, so to celebrate His birth with me.

I'm serving a dish of Christmas joy, and offering up God's good cheer. We will feast upon His holiness, and rejoice that our Savior's here. I'm baking Him up a special cake, singing to Him a birthday song. And a slice of His love and mercy, I'll give out for all to take along. I'm giving the offering of Jesus, at naught at cost to me. I'm sending out the message, there is One gift that is truly free!

In Loving Memory Of

Sunrise: December 29, 1930 ď – Sunset: November 15, 2018

Gone... But Not Forgotten!

On Thursday, November 15, 2018 at 11:59 PM , the First Union Missionary Baptist Church family received the following message from our Pastor, Rev. B.E. Garmon, Sr.

"It was at the Cross of Calvary that we see some of the greatest expressions and demonstrations of love. First and foremost is the love of God for all of mankind, that His only begotten Son died on the cross for our salvation. A close second would be the demonstration of love that Jesus showed for His mother, while He was yet dying. He looked down from the cross and called to His mother and to the Disciple John. Although He was leaving, Jesus wanted to make sure that His earthly mother was well taken care. The type of love that a Mother and child share is called “Storgae” in the Greek. Storgae love is the strongest type of love on earth, second only to Agape love, which comes directly from God. It was because of this motherly bond that Jesus stopped dying on the cross, long enough to make provisions for His mother. Jesus was also demonstrating the necessity of the 5th Commandment to Honor Father and Mother, all the days of our life. Solomon echoed this sentiment when he wrote that we are not to despise Mother when she is old (Proverbs 23:22). It was June 17, 1999, when Rev. Dr. Moses Garmon passed from labor to reward. Shortly thereafter, my Mom moved in with my family, and for the past 19 years I’ve done my best to keep the 5 th Commandment and to do as Jesus did and make sure that my Mother was well taken care of. On Thursday, November 15, 2018 at 7:30p.m.; my Mom, Mrs. Ada Mae Garmon, made a peaceful transition from earthly life to Eternal life. From a sound sleep, she widely opened her eyes, looked toward Heaven, smiled brightly; then immediately closed her eyes, and made her departure."

“…they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” "Mom will be laid to rest in Michigan next to my Dad. Later, after the Homegoing Service in Michigan, there will be a Memorial Service held at First Union."

Our sympathies and prayers are extended to the entire Garmon Family and Friends during their time of bereavement. Mother Garmon was near and dear to our hearts, too, and we will miss her dearly. Editor

Ada Mae (Brooks) Garmon, age 87, accepted her call to enter her Eternal home on Thursday, November 15, 2018 after a full life and a lengthy illness. Ada was born December 29, 1930 to the late Monday Warren and Etherine Brooks in Medon, Tennessee and later moved to Jackson, Tennessee. Ada accepted Christ at a very young age and united with the Liberty Grove Baptist Church in Jackson. In 1946, she married Moses Garmon and moved to Maywood, IL and later moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan. Their union was blessed with seven children. After moving to Michigan, she served at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church and St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church until her husband, the late Rev. Dr. Moses Garmon, founded The Prince of Peace Baptist Church in July 1979,where she served faithfully on the Mother’s Board, Choir, Missionary Society and as a dedicated and supportive First Lady in whatever capacity she was needed. Although Ada didn’t speak much in public, her quiet presence in support of her husband and Pastor, and The Prince of Peace Church, in her work, she spoke volumes loud and clear. More than anything else, Ada loved cooking and taking care of her family. As First Lady she was always prepared in her home to host any day of the week with a pot of hot coffee, lemon cake and sugar cookies for anyone that stopped by, for any reason. Ada could cook up a storm and feed an army while at the same time making sure all the children had cookies, snacks, pillows and blankets! She would provide anything and everything that was needed to hold adults and children over during the many, many impromptu Bible Studies held by her husband, Pastor M. Garmon, at the dining room table or in the family room in the basement of their home. Ada worked diligently at The Prince of Peace Church as Dr. Garmon and Pastor Bruce Garmon rebuilt the church after a fire. Ada could lay bricks, put shingles on a roof and pour cement with the best of them, not to mention paint a house, inside and out, lay carpet and install doors and windows. You name it, she could do it. Wherever Dr. Garmon went, she was right by his side until the day God called him from labor to reward. Ada was known to have a child on her hip, one in her hand, a spoon in the other hand, mixing lemonade or sweet tea, while Dr. Garmon roasted a whole hog for the church picnic in his back yard. It takes an especially strong and humble woman to serve as First Lady and all that comes with it, and Ada accepted her role and performed her duties with honor. After the passing of Dr. Garmon, a few years later in 2004, Ada moved to Brandon, Florida and joined the First Union Missionary Baptist Church where her youngest son has been Pastor since 2008. In 2011 Ada was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, but she never complained, and she never lost her desire to attend services. Ada was very active in Sunday School, Bible Class, Missionaries, and anything else she was able to attend until her

health began to fail. She lost sight in one eye because of diabetes, but never lost her desire to read and study the Word of God. She would still read her Bible faithfully with a small light and a magnifying glass. Her dedication and faithfulness to the Lord never wavered. Ada was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Rev. Dr. Moses Garmon, one grandson, Mark Garmon and her brother, Richard Brooks. She leaves to continue in service her seven children: Dr. M. Arthur (Deb) Garmon, of Jackson, MI; Bill (Marla) Garmon of Stanton, MI; Cindy Garmon of Brandon, FL; Linda (George Jr.) Stapleton of Jackson, TN; Gwen Garmon of Grand Rapids, MI; Bruce Sr. (Carla) Garmon of Brandon, FL; and Karen Garmon of Dayton, OH. Fourteen grandchildren: Marcie (Scott), Stacie (Chris), Kelcie, Latricia, Shaketa (Felix), Mary, Michelle (Kevon), Bruce Jr, Jermaine, Erica, Veronica, Felicia (Derek), Cherise, Ronnie Jr. Twentysix great-grandchildren: Scierra, Willie Jr., Keith Jr, Janiah, Da’treal, Na’moni, Gavin, Ethan, Ashton, Brooklyn, Peyton, Roslyn, Evelyn, Jase, Arianna, Alexis, Nicholas, Bruce III, Bryanna, Amari, Alani, Aliyah, Ayana, Kashad, Trinity and Crystal. She also leaves: one Great-great granddaughter, Jayde Danielle; one sister, Mary Curry (Jackson, TN); one sister-in-law, Bernice Garmon (Grand Rapids, MI), and a host of nieces, nephews, and Church family and friends who loved her dearly.

Mother Garmon's Memorial Service was held at First Union Missionary Baptist Church on Friday, November 30, 2018 @ 6:00pm, which followed her Homegoing Service on Tuesday, November 27, 2018 @ 1:00pm at the Prince of Peace Missionary Baptist Church in Grand Rapids, MI. The parade will begin at the corner of 15th Street and 21st Avenue at 12:00pm.

October 1-31, 2018 The month of October is 'Breast Cancer Awareness' month, and First Union MB Church held it's annual 'Breast Cancer Awareness Workshop' to bring attention to this life changing disease. The interactive workshop, hosted by the Deaconess Ministry, is an event not just for women, for men alike, because as we all know, breast cancer is not gender specific. This year's workshop was in some ways no different from the rest; phenomenal guest speaker(s), lots of shared information, question and answer session, and door prizes! But this year's event had an extra spin. The events culminated on Sunday, November 4th, with 'Pink Sunday' and a contest for the two people (female and male) who wore the most pink! As you can see from the photos, our members, Lauranette Haynes and Obie Whitehead took the challenge seriously. Congratulations to our winners and Thank You to the Deaconess Ministry for another outstanding event. December 2018/January 2019

Community | Family & Friends Meet Ja'Shyla This is Ja’Shyla Johnson receiving her 2nd “Citizen of the Month” award at her local elementary school this year. Ja’Shyla is very helpful and loves to make sure she assists her fellow classmates in achieving their learning just as well as herself. In her spare time she plays with her dolls and loves to color in many of her coloring books, as well as singing up a song or two. Ja’Shyla is such a blessed young lady. She lost her mother when she was 8-weeks old after her birth, but with growing up and starting to understand more of the situation, Ja’Shyla still finds it difficult to understand why her mommy had to leave her so soon.

Ja’Shyla has such a blessed spirit and always says “Mommy lives on the inside of me alongside the spirit of God", so I know she has an anointing over her that God Himself has placed upon her and her life. That’s why she’s able to shine bright and stand out.

Congratulations, Shyla. Keep up the good work. We are proud of you! Love, Ceola Johnson...'Auntie-Mommy' Editors Note: Ceola and Ja'Shyla Johnson are members of Revealing Truth Ministries
