A

s I write this, I am looking out my window at 109 Jamison Street, observing the dogwood trees that are bursting with blooms, proclaiming the beauty of Spring and Easter!

Even as a child, I was amazed that dogwood trees always bloomed at the right time. They would come forth and proclaim to the world the good news of Christ between Passover and the Resurrection day. It is nothing more than “Signs of Love,” and for sure, God’s timing is always perfect!!

The little white crosses with burned marks on each petal are God’s way to remind us and softly whisper that He loves us. He not only revealed His love with this “lifegiving” sacrifice, but He also reminds us through creation that something happened. It is a sign of...

Something beautiful...

Something unimaginable...

Something that makes sense out of everything else...

As we move forward and begin the implementation of our new strategic plan/testimony, A Decade of Dreams, our Connie Maxwell family stands amazed at the perfect timing and faithfulness of a God who constantly sends us “Signs of Love” about His deep, abiding care for our children and families, and His perfect timing.

Because of these “Signs of Love,” we stand ready with great anticipation and dream-filled expectations to heal and minister to the brokenness of those precious little ones placed in our care. This issue of CONNIE MAXWELL features stories, pictures, and testimonies about the perfect timing and faithfulness of our loving Father.

We hope you enjoy this testimony of God’s faithfulness and will be “inspired to action” in praying for and supporting our ministry in the most committed and deepest way. We are counting on you to walk beside us in this quest for excellence in healing and ministry.

The Evolution of a Dream

H

ow did we get to where we are now? Nicholson describes what he calls the ‘Evolution of a Dream’ as a three-year process.

“I feel like this is how God moved us to where we are at this moment,” he said.

For Danny and Debra Nicholson, their story began in a Seafood restaurant in Garden City Beach during the summer of 2016 that he refers to as the ‘Calling.’

“I’ve told this story a thousand times, and I will tell it a thousand more,” said Nicholson. “I will never forget that little boy at the restaurant and my heart getting shattered.”

Nicholson recalls how a little African American foster child won their hearts over in the waiting area and then proceeded to ask them before leaving the restaurant, ‘Will you come to me in my dreams?’

Several weeks later, he saw the announcement for the Connie Maxwell presidency and remembered that little boy.

“I knew God had a message for us,” said Nicholson.

“God wanted me to finish my own story. He wanted me to use all that I have learned and everybody I know to help these children find love and a home just like He did for me in February 1962.”

After coming to Connie Maxwell, Nicholson was led to begin a push for forgiveness and unity. “There were some really special holy moments that happened at this place,” said Nicholson. “I tried to bring those things into A Decade of Dreams as a testimony of God’s faithfulness to us.”

Nicholson is serious about Connie Maxwell remaining united together as a body of Christ. In fact, each member of the executive leadership team was asked to prayerfully create a personal 10-year spiritual growth plan.

“The calling brought us to forgiveness and unity, and forgiveness is the beginning of healing,” Nicholson said.

Throughout many of the events, activities, and discussions, Nicholson noticed that several themes began to emerge. These included unity, ministry and healing, campus enhancement and beautification, the expansion of programs and services, and the need to strengthen fundraising and create alternative revenue sources. www.ConnieMaxwell.com

Restoring Faith and Family for their Future A

s the vision of A Decade of Dreams began to slowly take shape, it became evident that it was time for the ministry to take a new look at our overall branding and messaging.

“We felt like it was important to make relevant, refresh and renew our brand to better reflect who we are now and who we want to become,” said Nicholson.

In 1947, Connie Maxwell Orphanage was changed to Connie Maxwell Children’s Home because it was no longer serving orphans exclusively.

New programs, such as Family Care and Foster Care, were added over the years, but many people still assumed that we only provided Residential Care.

“I’m glad that we were able to involve so many people in this process who love and support this ministry with all their heart,” said Miner. “I know it made it better in the end.”

Nicholson agrees, “We spent a year and a half going through this process and we are thrilled with our new logo

and name. It represents us in an excellent way.”

Other key items that came out of the process include a new mission and vision statement, as well as ten core values.

“We plan to hang these all over our campuses,” said Nicholson. “We want people to be constantly reminded about what we value and not lose site of our misison and vision.”

Okenvious has made many friends on Maxwell Farms. However chickens have become a favorite of his.

Cooper Nixon Emergency Cottage is available for short-term emergency placements and is located near the main campus of Connie Maxwell Children’s Ministries in Greenwood, SC. The cottage is staffed by two adults and a nighttime care staff member. All of the meals, recreation, and study sessions are conducted in the cottage by staff. During the pandemic, Cooper Nixon has helped over fifteen children.

While caring for children’s physical needs, our staff saw a need for a quarantine activity and decided that this bird project was perfect for learning new skills, interests, and an exciting way to connect with our children.

Connie Maxwell to launch Foster Care pilot project

C

onnie Maxwell Children’s Ministries is launching a Foster Care pilot project at the Greenwood campus. Applications are currently being accepted for a pioneering foster couple who would be given access to a fully furnished threebedroom home as a place to welcome children currently in the Foster Care system into their own family’s dayto-day life. According to Connie Maxwell Foster Care Director Paula Reed, the goal is for this opportunity to become more widely available to additional families in the future and to help meet these immediate needs in the lives of children.

“There is a great need for foster families in South Carolina,” said Reed. “We hope providing this opportunity will help encourage a young family to step up and make an immediate impact in the life of a child that needs a home,” Reed says.

The Foster Care House is being prepared for a strong, loving Christian family with a heart for children and who have been called to foster. Qualifications include a married couple at least 21 years of age with at

least a high school diploma or GED. Applicants must also meet the state foster home license requirements.

Applicants should understand the Foster Care House is not an opportunity for employment, and they would still need to have their own job and income. Connie Maxwell Children’s Ministries has additional applicant qualification preferences, including experience with children and teenagers, the ability to understand and appropriately respond to hurting children and possess excellent time and resource management skills.

“We would want these foster parents to work with the biological family to model parenting and relationship skills,” Reed explains.

The first Foster Care House resident family would obtain their foster home license and agree to accept placements of DSS foster children when needed.

Ideally, Connie Maxwell Children’s Ministries would like to place a foster sibling group of three to five children with this resident family while the biological family works toward reunification. The family will have access to Connie Maxwell facilities for the two-year

licensing period and possibly be given the option to not have to worry about any day. Through the Foster extend for two additional years.
