Next Magazine held it’s Pride Kick-off party Friday night (June 17th) at the W New York, and guests were clamoring to get in. The soiree, being held in the hotel’s ballroom, was so popular that staffers had to hold back hundreds of would-be revelers in the lobby once the party hit capacity an hour into the event. Those who did make it inside partied with the likes of Daniel Vosovic (Project Runway); Ross Matthews (Ross the Intern, E!) with his partner Salvador Camarena; Paul Alexander from The Ones, and adult industry legend, Robin Byrd; enjoyed a real life “candy bar” with hundreds of sweet treats; watched Cirque du Soleil performers; and danced the night away to music spun by legendary NYC nightlife icon, DJ Johnny Dynell.

In 1977 Anita Bryant, a runner-up in the 1959 Miss America pageant, was instrumental in repealing a Miami–Dade County ordinance that prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Harvey Milk (San Francisco 1977) and Elaine Noble (Massachusetts 1974) were the first openly gay people to be elected to office in the U.S.

The AIDS disease was first reported in the U.S. in 1981 and became known as the "gay plague" due to the lack of both scientific and government responses.

In 1996, Congress passed the Defense of Marriage Act, which prohibited the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages.

Author and activist Dan Savage and Terry Miller, the brains behind the historic “It Gets Better� campaign, were the grand marshalls of the 2011 NYC Pride parade.

In 1969, when the Mafiaowned bar that offered a safe place for gay men and lesbians to drink and dance was shut down as part of a citywide crackdown on homosexual life, Greenwich Village erupted into several days of unrest. www.connextionsmagazine.com
