“Organize the world” – that’s Marie Kondo’s motto. If you don’t know Kondo, you’ve probably been living under a rock. Or, more likely, under a mountain of clutter.

She says that Kondo's philosophy has changed the way she views her belongings, but also life in general.

"I've started to ask myself, is this sparking joy in my life, and if not, then why am I doing it?"

Her international bestseller, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, in which she details her Japanese KonMari method of decluttering, has invaded the homes and even the lives of millions of readers.

Scarlett's family recently tackled the daunting task of bringing the KonMari method to their humongous collection of books, 18 boxes collecting dust in the attic for nearly a decade.

Kondo's philosophy is simple - get rid of any objects that don't "spark joy."

On a nice day, they lugged all the boxes outdoors, and within reason, followed Kondo's dictates. They spread the books out on the porch and the sidewalks so they could "grasp the totality"of their collection. Then they held each book and re-homed anything that didn't "spark joy." In the end, they got rid of 10 boxes of books.

Among those who discovered the KonMari is the library's Technical Services Supervisor Scarlett FisherHerreman.

For "Konverts" to the KonMari method, the rewards of de-cluttering aren't only about the freeing up of physical space.

"You gain space in your life, and that's liberating," says Scarlett. "But you also gain space conceptually. You don't feel as weighed down by all the stuff you're responsible for."

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up is available in audio format on Hoopla, on OverDrive and in print copies.

If "Kondo-ing" just isn't your cup of tea but you still want solid advice on wrangling your clutter, the library's Home Neighborhood has you covered with books by organizing professionals.

Seeds of change It seemed like an ordinary day at the library, but behind the scenes a group of staff members from all over the building were busy…making paper.

In fact, members of our Green Team were making seed paper - paper embedded with seeds from the library's Monarch Waystation and Pollinator Garden (located at the southwest corner of the building near the flag pole).

Let me tell you the remarkable story of our library's garden.

Because of certain agricultural practices, bees and Monarchs have lost their habitats and the plants they rely on for food. Now their populations are winnowing.

Library staff planted the Monarch Waystation in the spring of 2014 and expanded it in 2015. It's full of milkweed, the only plant that Monarch butterflies use as a host for reproduction. Flowering plants in the garden provide nectar and pollen for bees as well as butterflies.

We made our recycled paper from clean shredded paper trash. If you want to learn to make paper, the library’s Arts & Crafts Neighborhood has great resources. We'll also hold a Recycled Papermaking Workshop April 6. See page 10 for the details.

very child ready for kindergarten – it’s a goal that The Library Foundation believes in. And we're supporting the library’s efforts to achieve it.

As our energies focus on early childhood, we’re excited to welcome Brenda Dietrich to the Foundation’s Board of Trustees. Brenda is the recently retired Auburn-Washburn school superintendent and passionately involved in the community. She replaces outgoing board member Dr. Bob Parman. Completing his second three-year term, Dr. Parman was recently acknowledged for his exceptional service to the Foundation and the library.

We’ve created a new early childhood fund to fuel action on four initiatives.

A new Mobile Early Childhood Learning Center will arrive in 2016, and the Foundation has allocated its funding. We’re covering some start-up costs for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, a joint venture between the library and United Way of Topeka. Garden fresh I

n the early morning hours, Monica Hernandez prepares for a busy day managing a bustling kitchen. But first, she goes out to the garden to pick herbs and vegetables.

It sounds like a scenario from an urban bistro or something, right? This is the Millennium Café at the library which, surprisingly, harvests many of its ingredients from a well-tended little garden on the library grounds.

"In the mornings, I go out to the garden and pick parsley, sage, thyme and rosemary. Denise [the café baker] makes amazing dill bread when fresh dill is in season. We use the garden's basil for pesto and whatever vegetables are in season for side orders," says Monica.

The sides are freshly picked veggies like potatoes, summer squash, green beans and beets.

"People love our beets. We prepare them with olive oil and fresh herbs," explains Monica.

The café also recently added a slate of organic menu items, including soups and sandwiches.

The café is conscientious about the freshness and locality of its ingredients.

Wednesday's burger special uses locallyraised, grass-fed beef and the chicken is also high quality from local purveyors.

WHERE YOUR LIBRARIAN UNLEASHES THE INNER BOOK NERD

I

am very fond of annotated editions; like keys to a secret room or a map of hidden treasure, annotated editions reveal gems that enhance the reading of a beloved text. John Matteson's lovely annotated edition of Louisa May Alcott's classic Little Women is no exception: this oversized volume, generously illustrated and thoughtfully edited, is a treasure trove of information not only about the book but also about the Alcott family.

In fact, the many wonderful illustrations and photographs are reason enough to check out The Annotated Little Women. Matteson includes Little Women illustrations from different artists such as Norman Rockwell and May Alcott. There are movie stills from from the 1933, 1949, and 1994 films (to refresh your memory, Katherine Hepburn, June Allyson and Winona Ryder were the respective "Jos"). There are also many photographs of the Alcott family and various Alcottiana such as Lizzie Alcott's sewing box and Anna Alcott's wedding dress.

Louisa May Alcott famously didn't want to write a novel for girls, fearing it would be dull, but more than a hundred years after its publication, Little Women lives on in our hearts. If it's been awhile since you've peeped in on the March family, John Matteson's annotated edition is a marvelous way to reacquaint yourself with the joys and sorrows of Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy. — Julie Nelson, author of Lost in the Stacks, tscpl.org

Of course we find out about Amy March's pickled limes and Meg's blanc mange (with recipes!), as well as explanations of the many allusions to John Bunyan's allegory The Pilgrim's Progress, but what I found fascinating were the parallels - and notable differences - between the fictional March family and the Alcotts. The Alcott sisters really did put on theatricals, for example, with Anna Alcott ("Meg") being both a gifted actress and talented set builder. Lizzie Alcott ("Beth") did die tragically young, but her final, lingering days were not nearly as peaceful as Beth's. May Alcott ("Amy") was a talented artist and many of her paintings, drawings and even the cast she made of her foot are reproduced in this edition.

Before The Fall by Noah Hawley From the Emmy Award-winning creator of Fargo and writer for the hit television series Bones comes the thriller to read in 2016. You come to us to learn and be entertained. Library customers and visitors attended library events over 90,000 times in 2015 and made 798,452 trips to the library.

Summer readers are superheroes 9,120 babies, kids, teens and adults took the reading challenge this summer. And kids read a whopping 72,527 hours total. That means they beat the summer slide and kept their reading skills honed all summer long.
