It’s hard to believe Thelma is still waiting for her forever home. Spend a few minutes with this Belgian Malinois mix, and it’s easy to understand why staff at the Simon Foundation in Bloomfield have fallen in love with her. Shelter Coordinator Nikole Strickland has had several months to do just that.

Most notably, Nikole sees how Thelma lights up when she has a job to do. Trained in search and rescue, she enjoys new experiences; facing them with enthusiasm and intention. In training exercises, she’s successfully located people in the woods in just minutes. When Nikole completed The Honored Dog™ Personality Assessment, she recognized a strong balance of focus, determination, loyalty, and patience. All qualities she had come to know and love in Thelma. Her confidence and initiative are reflected in the Bossy Pants™ result. Dogs with this profile thrive with purpose and leadership. The assessment also revealed an equally strong Goodest Girl™ influence, reflecting Thelma’s loyalty and devotion. She would do well with a small family and yard but should not live with cats or small animals. “Thelma lights up when she has a job to do! The assessment matched her personality very accurately and could give her adopters deeper insight into who she is and what she needs,” Nikole shares. The Honored Dog™ assessment didn’t define Thelma. It recognized her, offering a shared language for talking about Thelma’s personality, which is exactly what it was designed to do.

For her Connecticut Dog cover debut, Thelma wears a custom handcrafted Westie Wear® sweater inspired by her Honored Dog personality. Now, she’s simply waiting for the family who will recognize it, too. The cover photograph was taken by Oscar Dean Photography. With over forty years of experience, Oscar Dean Photography works with dogs of all breeds and photographs at your dog's favorite place. (860) 818-2847 Thelma is available for adoption through The Simon Foundation. The Simon Foundation 120 Rescue Ave. Bloomfield, CT 06002 (860) 519-1516 www.thesimonfoundation.org

Puppies from Paradise: Saving Island Dogs, One Flight at a Time Text provided by All Paws on Deck

Imagine vacationing in the beautiful U.S. Virgin Islands and returning home knowing you’ve helped save a puppy’s life.

airport, brought everyone back to the house, and even cared for two of the puppies overnight until the group could fly home the following day.

That’s the idea behind Puppies from Paradise, an innovative rescue program created by All Paws on Deck.

To date, All Paws on Deck has completed two Puppies from Paradise rescue missions, creating lasting relationships with shelter partners throughout the Virgin Islands. Those partners continue to reach out whenever dogs need help, knowing the Connecticut rescue is committed to finding them loving homes.

Working alongside shelters on the islands of St. Thomas and St. John, All Paws on Deck rescues puppies and, whenever possible, adult dogs that have few opportunities to leave the islands. While shelters across the country face overcrowding, island shelters deal with an additional obstacle: isolation. Unlike many mainland rescues, they cannot rely on volunteer pilot networks to transport animals. For most of these dogs, commercial airlines are the only path to a new life. That’s where All Paws on Deck comes in. Several times a year, the Connecticut-based rescue organizes volunteer rescue missions to the U.S. Virgin Islands. Volunteers enjoy a meaningful trip to paradise while returning home with one or two puppies each (depending on airline cabin weight restrictions). It’s a unique blend of travel, volunteerism, and lifesaving rescue.

The missions are funded through donations and community fundraising. Volunteers cover their own travel, lodging, meals, and vacation expenses, while rescue funds pay for the puppies’ airline fees, transportation, rental vehicles, and other rescue-related costs. The local community has embraced the program as well. On August 15, Tito’s Handmade Vodka and Jealous Monk in Mystic hosted a fundraiser benefiting Puppies from Paradise, with $1 from every Tito’s cocktail sold donated directly to future rescue missions. With unforgettable stories, breathtaking island scenery, and countless puppies whose lives have been transformed, Puppies from Paradise is proving that sometimes the best souvenir from paradise is a second chance at life.

Behind the scenes, however, these missions are anything but simple. Flights arrive at different airports. Volunteers land at different times. Puppies may be headed to Boston, Bradley, or other destinations, often late at night. Every mission requires months of planning, fundraising, coordination, and a willingness to adapt when things don’t go as planned. And sometimes… they don’t. During one recent mission, the team’s return flight was delayed and ultimately canceled while five puppies waited patiently in their carriers. What could have become a disaster turned into another reminder of the kindness that makes rescue possible. Their Airbnb host rushed to the

Every Puppies from Paradise mission begins with a plane ticket and ends with wagging tails, grateful families, and one less dog waiting in an overcrowded island shelter. It’s proof that an ordinary vacation can become an extraordinary act of kindness—and that sometimes the journey home changes two lives: the puppy’s and the volunteer’s. If you’d like to be part of the next Puppies from Paradise mission, email donations@allpawsondeck.org to learn more. Whether you’re an experienced traveler or simply looking for a meaningful adventure, you can help give an island puppy the chance at a new life. Safe travels — and thank you for helping rescue paradise, one puppy at a time.www.allpawsondeck.org

Help protect wildlife when driving your vehicle by staying alert and paying attention to the road and its sidelines. Accidents sometimes happen, but many can be avoided. Animal parents can sometimes leave their young for several hours. If you think you see an orphaned animal, observe it from a distance over a long period of time. You may find that your assistance is not needed after all. If you come across wildlife, it's best to stay away and to keep little children and your pets at bay. Get assistance when rescuing a wild animal from a licensed rehabilitator or from someone with knowledge, experience and the right intentions. If an animal is indeed orphaned, distressed, injured or in any sort of danger, get help immediately. To learn more about wildlife in need, contact the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP). EAR Mites

Ear mites are a common problem for dogs. The most common ear mites are "Otodectes cynotis". These surface mites are parasitic and almost undetectable by the naked eye. They have a life cycle of about three-weeks, live for about two months which during their life span they continue to reproduce.

Although found in the ear canal, these mites can also live on the skin. Ear mites are contagious through direct contact. Mites can spread to most household pets such as rabbits, mice, ferrets, and gerbils. Even a mother can pass mites to her babies. Cats and dogs can share the same mites. Outdoor cats are more likely to get ear mites. However, you don't need to worry about your personal health because it's unusual and rare for ear mites to be passed to humans. 14 • Fall 2026 | Connecticut Dog

Dogs with ear mites usually scratch and shake their heads often. Persistent scratching and head shaking could indicate a severe mite infestation. Other general symptoms include ear inflammation, a strong foul odor, dark and sticky wax secretion, crusty buildup similar to coffee grounds, discomfort and a possible rash in or around the ear. Dogs often scratch their ears due to itching, which can cause bleeding. If left untreated, severe damage and infection could occur in the ear canals. Be aware that some bacterial infections produce the same symptoms as ear mites, so ruling out other causes is important. Your veterinarian can determine if your dog has ear mites. If your dog has ear mites, a treatment will be recommended. Typically dogs feel some immediate relief after the treatment begins. Treatment for ear

mites involves cleaning the ears with a canine ear cleaner. Topical medication or ear drops are likely to be applied to the ear. Oral medications may also be necessary. Depending on the treatment plan, it may take a couple of weeks to kill all the mites. Ear mites don't just live in the ears; they can also live all over the body's skin. Since ear mites are highly contagious, examine all your pets' ears if another pet in the household has been diagnosed with them. Discard or wash all pet bedding, as ear mites can live in the bedding and furniture, even after you've treated your dog's ears.

Pet Care: Boarding, Daycare and Pet Sitting well for your dog. If your dog has medical issues or concerns, find a facility that will cater to those needs. You’ll want to ask questions regarding their hours, schedule for the dogs, bathroom breaks, staff experience or training, and security and fire alarms, emergency or evacuation plans, insurance or bonding for pet sitters or business licenses and inspections for facilities.

Determining the right type of pet care for your cat or dog can be daunting. With all the options available, the choice can sometimes seem difficult. For most people, knowing your pet's day-to-day needs is the easy part. However, when it's time to plan a vacation or if something unexpected or a sudden emergency arises, navigating those circumstances can be a bit more challenging. Seeking help from close family members and friends is the obvious choice, but when nobody can assist with your pet care needs, finding an outside source may be your only option. Some pet parents may prefer using a nearby business to care for their pet so as not to burden the people they know. Either way, when in a pinch, it's good to know there's an option you can turn to. Before committing to any one place or person, decide what is the best option for your pet by assessing your pet’s personality, overall needs and lifestyle. Talk to people - friends, family members, and current clients of the facility or the pet-sitter you are interested in using. Although it’s great to receive a general review from the people you talk to, keep in mind that what may work well for one dog is not a guarantee it will work

Don't be afraid to ask further questions. Whether it's a boarding kennel, doggie daycare, or pet sitting, the business is providing a service for you and your pet and you should know what to expect before committing to their services. A few questions you may want to ask are: Is there a veterinarian on site or one they are associated with? What happens to your pet in case of a health emergency? Do they provide medical assistance for dogs with special needs? Is someone providing 24-hour care? What is the ratio of dogs to staff in the play areas? How will your dog's day be structured? What is their protocol for overstimulated dogs? Are crates used and if so, for what situations and for how long? Are dogs separated by size? Are the staff trained to handle any conflicts and if so, how? Visit the facility to see exactly where your dog will spend its time and meet the staff. Are people helpful and friendly? Is the facility visibly clean? Does it smell clean when you walk through the doors? Is it loud and noisy or is it calm and peaceful? Have a pet sitter come by and meet your pet. Are you comfortable leaving that person in your home with your pet while you are away? Do they seem knowledgable? What is their experience with inhome pet sitting? Does your dog seem comfortable with that person? Will anyone else from the pet-sitting company, aside from that person during the inital visit, be caring for your pet? You want the best for your pet but you also have to consider finances. What is the cost? Is this a long-term or short-term investment? Ask about a trial run to see if you like the facility or caretaker, and to confirm it provides everything you're looking for. Your pet is important to you and when considering leaving your pet in someone else's care, you must explore options and make your best assessment. Finding somewhere or someone that meets your household schedule and checks all your boxes requires time, patience and advance research. Only you know your family's and your pet's needs, so finding the right resource is imperative. The following pages contain information about a few Connecticut businesses that provide pet care services which should help guide you in the right direction.

Shoreline Happy Paws

Shoreline Happy Paws is a professional pet care company serving Old Saybrook, Essex, Old Lyme, Clinton, Westbrook, Madison, Deep River, Chester, Lyme, East Lyme and Niantic. Dog Walking is the core of the business: a midday walk while the house is empty, a morning outing, an afternoon stretch. Days and times can move to fit a household's life; what matters is seeing the dog every week, so the handlers know the dog and the dog knows them. Dogs wanting more go on Adventure Hikes, on private trails in small groups matched by size and temperament, led by professional, experienced handlers. Most come home ready to sleep, and for households weighing daycare it is another route to the same result. The team is small on purpose. Clients get to know a handful of handlers, not a stream of new faces, and with a team behind them no family is stranded by a sick day or snowstorm. Every caregiver is a trained, background-checked W-2 employee, insured and supervised. Also available: Puppy Care, and On Demand visits for same or next day needs from established clients. Cats, rabbits, birds and small animals are welcome for Drop In Visits, no commitment. Dogs seen weekly also unlock Vacation Coverage, Overnights, evenings and weekends. Every visit ends with photos, GPS timestamps and a written summary, and a real person answers the phone if you ever need anything. Coming next is the Doggie Adventure Bus, Southeastern CT's first: trails, beach play and river splashes, with home pickup. See their ad on page 33 for more information. Host a Healthy, Happy and Humane Thanksgiving Most pet owners and animal lovers appreciate the simple acts of kindness and thoughtfulness that go into cooking and planning a humane Thanksgiving celebration. It’s not always easy to balance today’s holiday traditions with what most family and friends expect, while focusing on making a difference for the animal considered the main dish of the dining table. Most turkeys in grocery stores are raised in overcrowded commercialized factory farm settings. Typically, these turkeys live horrendous, terrible lives, often in overcrowded, sickly and unclean conditions. Although terms like “free-range” or “organic” have recently become popular trends, this labeling does not mean the animal lived a good or healthy life or died a pleasant, painless death. Actually, the overall welfare of any animal raised for meat is quite limited, particularly for birds, especially during this time of year. As a generous, selfless act, instead of focusing your meal on turkey, consider all the vegetarian and vegan side dishes, condiments, and desserts, after all, many consider these the best part of the Thanksgiving meal anyhow. As sustainable eating habits gain recognition, especially today, consumers are becoming more educated about their health, as well as the

health of all animals, plant life and the environment because these factors are essentially tied together. Not purchasing a turkey for your holiday meal significantly impacts the lives of turkeys across the country positively. Making a difference for any and all farm-raised animals as an individual is a rewarding, personal experience and the turkeys will be so happy you made that choice on their behalf. On the following pages you'll learn more about four nearby farm sanctuaries that go above and beyond for animal lives: Farm Sanctuary, Freedom Farm Animal Sanctuary, JP Farm Animal Sanctuary, and Safe Haven Farm Sanctuary. While two are local in Connecticut, the other two are located in New York, not far from Connecticut. Each has a special Thanksgiving message for you and your family. We hope you feel inspired to host a healthy, happy and humane Thanksgiving this year so that now you and the turkeys can have something to truly be grateful for this holiday season.

Facts About Turkeys: Turkeys communicate in complex ways, using 28 distinct calls and conveying different meanings through variations in delivery and intensity. Much like octopuses change their hues to camouflage themselves, turkeys’ heads change color according to their moods. For example, males become redder when courting females or confronting other males. Turkeys have culture, defined in animals as the ability to share and learn behaviors as information is passed down through generations. Turkeys can recall more than 30 fellow turkeys and distinguish between each other’s voices. They can also remember the faces of humans they know. Turkeys form deep bonds and live in complex social groups. For example, hens have been known to care for chicks in their flock who are not their own hatchlings. Text provided by Farm Sanctuary

Each year, millions of Americans sit down to a Thanksgiving feast, giving thanks for the turkeys at the center of their tables. Tragically, the approximately 46 million birds killed for this holiday and all farmed birds in the United States are excluded from the basic federal regulations that would prevent extreme suffering in their final moments. That is no way to express our gratitude. That’s why citizens concerned about extreme animal suffering have been working for decades to protect turkeys and other birds under the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act (HMSA). The HMSA governs the handling and treatment of farmed animals during slaughter—but it excludes birds, who account for around 95% of U.S. land animals slaughtered for food annually. This means the billions of turkeys, chickens, ducks, and geese killed in our food system each year are excluded from basic humane consideration. The HMSA was signed into law in 1958 and needs to be updated to include poultry. Since 1970, the nation’s

turkey consumption has nearly doubled, and while more than 200 million U.S. turkeys have been slaughtered annually in recent years, the birds symbolizing Thanksgiving have remained forgotten. A change is long overdue.

The USDA and Congress must act and recognize that turkeys, like other animals, are living, feeling beings who deserve to be treated with compassion. They should not

be treated as inanimate objects.

If we are genuinely grateful for turkeys, the least we can do is protect them from slow, agonizing deaths. The kindest thing we can do is to leave them off our plates by

FARM SANCTUARY Text and photos provided by: Farm Sanctuary Thanksgiving is a day centered on gratitude and togetherness, so it is the perfect time to celebrate with a plant-based meal that’s kind to animals, people, and the planet. Farm Sanctuary is happy to share tips to help you get started as you plan a humane holiday. Each year, 46 million turkeys are killed for Thanksgiving in the United States, the majority having suffered inside animal factories where birds are treated like commodities. The good news is that, with so many vegan options available, it’s easier than ever to plan a compassionate feast. Try a turkey-free main course by Tofurky, Gardein, Field Roast, and other widely sold brands—or wow your guests by preparing a savory Turk'y Wellington with Mushroom Stuffing. For this recipe and many others, visit www.farmsanctuary.org.

Side dishes are the star of most Thanksgiving feasts, and you can easily whip up vegan alternatives to festive favorites like mashed potatoes and casseroles using ingredients such as nondairy milk or butter, or vegetable broth. Finish your compassionate meal with desserts that showcase fall flavors without harming animals. From seasonal pies to cobblers or crisps, look for recipes that replace dairy and eggs.

FREEDOM FARM ANIMAL SANCTUARY Written by: Lisa Miskella, Founder, Freedom Farm Animal Sanctuary

every bit as comforting, satisfying, and memorable.

Thanksgiving is a time to gather with family and friends, express gratitude, and share a delicious meal. This year, consider extending that gratitude beyond the dinner table by choosing a celebration that includes compassion for turkeys.

Every compassionate meal is an opportunity to make a difference. By choosing one of the many delicious plant-based alternatives to turkey and leaving turkey off our plates, we give these remarkable birds something to be thankful for—their lives. It’s a simple choice that reflects the true spirit of Thanksgiving: gratitude, compassion, and respect for all living beings.

At Freedom Farm Animal Sanctuary, I’ve had the privilege of getting to know our rescued turkeys—Burke, Stella, Zelda, and Snowy. Spending time with them has forever changed the way I see these remarkable birds. They are intelligent, curious, and social animals with distinct personalities. They recognize familiar faces, form friendships, enjoy affection, and each has their own unique quirks that make them special. Like our dogs and cats, they experience joy, fear, comfort, and love. They simply want the chance to live their lives in peace. The good news is that hosting a humane Thanksgiving has never been easier. Today, there are delicious plant-based alternatives to turkey available in grocery stores, along with countless homemade recipes that make wonderful centerpieces for your holiday table. Pair one with the traditional favorites we all love—creamy mashed potatoes, savory stuffing, roasted Brussels sprouts, warm rolls with butter, homemade cranberry sauce, rich gravy, and apple pie—and you’ll have a meal that’s

This Thanksgiving, let compassion be the centerpiece of your table. By choosing one of the many delicious plant-based alternatives to turkey, you’ll discover that the holiday isn’t defined by what’s on your plate, but by the gratitude, kindness, and love you share. Sometimes the smallest change can make the biggest difference—for both your family and the animals whose lives are spared. If you’d like to experience a compassionate Thanksgiving with us, join Freedom Farm Animal Sanctuary for our annual Thanks-Living Dinner on November 21st in South Britain, Connecticut. Together, we’ll celebrate kindness, community, and delicious plant-based food. Freedom Farm Animal Sanctuary freedomfarmanimalsanctuary.org info@freedomfarmanimalsanctuary.org

JP FARM ANIMAL SANCTUARY Text and photos provided by: JP Farm Animal Sanctuary Thanksgiving is one of our favorite times of year at JP Farm Animal Sanctuary because it's a chance to celebrate what the holiday is truly about: gratitude, compassion, and spending time with the ones we love. One of those loved ones at JP is Ronnie, our resident turkey. Like dogs, turkeys are curious, playful, intelligent, and full of personality. Ronnie greets visitors with excitement, follows us around the sanctuary home, enjoys attention, and has formed a special friendship with our rescue dog, Oliver. Watching the two of them oversee the farm together is a beautiful reminder that friendship doesn't recognize species. They simply enjoy each other's company, proving that every animal has the ability to form meaningful bonds. One of the things we hear most often is that Ronnie was the highlight of a visitor's day. Many people have never met a turkey up close and are amazed by how affectionate, social, and engaging he is. They're even more surprised to learn that Ronnie lives inside with JP cofounders Oscar and Lynn, alongside Oliver and Ellie May, our sweet amputee hen. If you're looking to create a healthier, happier, and more humane Thanksgiving this year, here are a few simple ideas: Build your meal around delicious plant-based dishes. From hearty roasts and savory stuffing to creamy mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, and decadent pies, today's vegan recipes make it easy to create a Thanksgiving feast everyone can enjoy. Ask us to share recipes and recommend local plant-based caterers. Decorate your table with pumpkins, gourds, colorful leaves, fresh flowers, and candles instead of making animals part of the centerpiece. Include your dogs in the celebration with safe, dog-friendly treats, a special homemade meal, and an extra long autumn walk. Practice gratitude by supporting a local animal sanctuary, volunteering, or making a donation in honor of someone you love. The choices we make around the table can reflect the kindness we hope to bring into the world. Every meal is an opportunity to celebrate abundance while extending compassion to all animals.

Oliver and Ronnie waiting for guests

Each November, JP Farm Animal Sanctuary hosts our annual Thanksliving celebration, a gathering filled with delicious plant-based food, time with our rescued residents, and a community of people who believe gratitude and kindness belong together. We'd love for you to celebrate with us and experience a Thanksgiving tradition where every guest at the table is truly someone to be thankful for. SAFE HAVEN FARM SANCTUARY Written by: Bill Crain, Co-founder of Safe Haven Farm Sanctuary Photos courtesy of Safe Haven Farm Sanctuary Every Thanksgiving our sanctuary holds a party for our turkeys. We believe the animals, who have been rescued from slaughter, should be able to enjoy the holiday as much as we do. We serve them pumpkin pies with cranberries and lettuce sprinkled on top. At each party I tell visitors a brief story about the turkeys. Here is one of the stories: One day nine Girl Scouts visited our farm and held a ceremony in the barn. They gathered in a circle and took turns standing in the center, where they read solemn pledges. They vowed to cherish and protect animals at all times. One pledged to console them in their dying days, asking the angels to gather them in their arms. At that time, we cared for four turkeys, who were in the barn isle during the ceremony. They were young and had spent every waking moment noisily milling about. To our amazement, they joined circle and sat perfectly still, their eyes focused on each girl as she read her pledge. It was if they were listening to the words and were deeply moved by them. Turkeys enjoying their Thanksgiving meal at Safe Haven Farm Sanctuary

Thanksgiving Celebration for the Turkeys!

The turkeys couldn’t understand English, of course, but they must have felt the Scouts’ inward quietness. I suspect there was a spiritual element - an attitude of quiet reverence - in the Scouts’ ceremony that the turkeys responded to. We at the sanctuary continue to appreciate the richness of animals’ emotions and see how cruel and absurd it is to view them as mere food for human pleasure. o many of our local rescue organizations and animal shelters are overwhelmed with homeless dogs that need to find their forever families. This great need is, in many ways, due to the large number of returned pets from previous years' adoptions. Reasons include people moving, returning to work, taking vacations, losing jobs, suffering from financial and/or medical hardships along with a variety of other reasons causing the uptick in returned dogs to shelters across our state. The combination of the many new dogs routinely coming into the shelters. With the overwhelming animal surrenders, our local animal shelters and rescue organizations depend greatly on the generosity, love and support from volunteers, donators, and adopters. To bring awareness about this matter to our pet communities, this issue contains information about some of these animal shelters and rescue organizations. With thanks to the support of dog loving local business owners, Connecticut Dog has put together this editorial feature that will continue to be included in each issue of the magazine going forward where these and additional animal welfare facilities will be featured. As you turn the following pages, please be mindful of the animal shelters and rescue organizations located within your own community and think about ways that you can help make a difference in the lives of abandoned, abused, neglected and homeless animals. If you would like to partner up with us to make a difference by becoming an advertising sponsor to help benefit a pet shelter, rescue organization or animal sanctuary within the magazine, please contact us at publisher@ConnecticutDog.com.

CThumane.org 800-452-0114 Whether it’s providing resources so pets can keep their homes, or being a safe haven for critters with nowhere to turn, the Connecticut Humane Society (CHS) serves vulnerable pets across the state. Founded in 1881, CHS is the oldest and most comprehensive animal welfare organization in Connecticut. CHS has long focused on homeless pets, veterinary care and adoptions, but also has programs making it possible for pets to keep their families: the Pet Food Pantry, reduced-fee Fox Memorial Clinic, traveling wellness clinics, behavior assistance, and crisis foster homes. CHS is the leading resource in the state for companion animal welfare, enriching the lives of families and communities through adoption services, medical care, education, and prevention of cruelty. As an independent nonprofit located in Newington, Waterford and Westport, CHS receives no ongoing municipal funding and isn’t associated with national animal welfare groups. The pets rely on the generosity and support of donors. Sponsored by: The Bark Easy Grooming Salon

Their MISSION Little Paws Dachshund Rescue (LPDR) is an East Coast-based 501(c)3 exempt nonprofit Text provided by Little Paws Dachshund Rescue Photos provided by Little Dachshund Rescue. dedicated to rescuing and rehoming their faMiniature dachshunds are considered the same breed as the standard size dachshund, just a smaller vorite short-legged breed. LPDR specializes in sized version. They have short legs and stand low to the ground. These dogs can have wire-haired, finding permanent homes for dachshunds and smooth or long coats that come in several different colors. They are easy to groom, requiring weekly dachshund mixes while striving to make the brushing and monthly baths. Despite weighing only 8 to 11 pounds, their bodies are quite muscular. lives of all dogs better through action, advocacy, Standard dachshunds, in comparison, weigh between 16 and 32 pounds. years. As a small hound breed originating from Germany, the miniature dachshund is considered a working dog, bred specifically to hunt small ground animals. They have a good nose and because of their body, they can actually go underground and trail. With their high prey drive, they can run away quickly and suddenly, so it's important that they always remain on a leash or in a well-fenced, secure area. Mini dachshunds do not need extensive exercise. However, they do need daily activities that stimulate them both mentally and physically. Morning and evening walks and some play time will be enough for the miniature dachshund. Consider preventing your dachshund from jumping on and off furniture and from running up and down stairs because they can easily injure their backs. Back injuries, specifically disc damage and intervertebral disc disease can lead to permanent spinal damage or even paralysis. Other common health issues include ear infections and obesity. Their ears lack good air flow so they retain moisture and infections can be a problem. Because of their short legs and body frame, they can gain weight quickly, leading to obesity. It's best to limit treats, offer a wellbalanced diet, provide plenty of clean, fresh drinking water and maintain daily walks. Mini dachshunds benefit from positive-reinforcement training starting at a young age. Socializing them at an early age also helps them have positive experiences with people and other animals, otherwise their personality keeps them wary of strangers. They can develop some behavioral issues, like excessive digging. Maintaining daily mental and physical exercise helps prevent those types of issues. These small dogs have a tendency to bark, it's just their nature. However, they do make excellent watch dogs. With a high-spirited, independent and sometimes stubborn nature, the miniature dachshund is also intelligent, affectionate, playful, friendly and loyal to family. 38 • Fall 2026 | Connecticut Dog

Their GOAL LPDR's goal is to identify abandoned, mistreated, or homeless dogs, oversee their treatment and wellbeing, and find loving owners for those in their care. If you are looking for a new family member, look at the available dachshunds and dachshund mixes by visiting www.littlepawsdr.org.
