From the desk of the CEO Last month, I had the privilege of joining the Values Blueprint Committee for a day and a half of intensive work on our Built on Values program. The Donor Pavilion Auditorium was filled with team members from across the enterprise, taking on the task of examining, defining and focusing on our values as an organization. The group included a wide range of experience and age levels, as well as representatives of every level of the organization from COOs to front-line staff. The Values Blueprint was the second step in the Built on Values process, following a series of focus groups that sought out input from dozens of you, chosen completely at random. The team from People Ink, which is working with us on Built on Values, was impressed with the enthusiastic response in those focus groups. But they were even more impressed with the passion for our mission in every meeting. They also appreciated your frank and honest input on the issues facing us in the coming months and years. Information from the focus groups helped shape discussions within the Vales Blueprint Committee. The committee went through intense discussions of where we are as an organization and what we want to become in the future, a future where everything we do – from hiring to evaluations to business decisions – is focused on our values. They looked at values statements from a variety of organizations and companies, and worked hard to find the key concepts, words and phrases that best fit us at BioBridge Global. Members of the committee are now working on preparing our new values document, and they’ll be looking for your input later this month on a logo. The new values and value statements will debut the week of the BBG Summit, July 18-22. Thanks to everyone for their input and efforts to focus our values as an organization.

I
f you’re a regular visitor to the eConnect homepage, you may have noticed a big change in the last month. On May 9, the icon for the kaput Employee Directory was replaced by the two-toned green arrows of the BBG Bodega. (Find a directory in Outlook now.) The BBG Bodega is the first high-profile project for the Engagement Committee, a group of employees brought together as a response to your feedback on multiple surveys. (Full disclosure: Yours truly is a proud member of the committee.) Committee members are non-managers from across the organization. The BBG Bodega is designed to be like any other bodega – a place where you can find just about anything. And just like its brickand-mortar inspiration, it’s open to everyone. Feel free to post anything from free kittens to volunteering opportunities. (About the only prohibitions are selling items and fundraising.) The goal of the bodega is to get you to engage with each other. If you want that free couch or that really cute puppy, you’ve got to communicate with the person who has them, even if he or she works in a different building or for a different subsidiary. You might even have to deal with them (gasp!) face-to-face. But the bodega is just the first step. The Engagement Committee also wants to build communication up and down the organization, as well as across it. If you have an idea you think might improve communications among folks at every level of authority, feel free to pass it along to a member of the group. In the meantime, go find a new dog/ iguana/volunteer opportunity on the BBG Bodega. That’s why it’s there.

STARLiMS: Change is coming to QualTex
S
aying STARLiMS is just software is kind of like saying the Alamo is just an old building downtown, or Coca-Cola is just another soda.

The new laboratory information management system, which begins its rollout this fall at QualTex Laboratories, is far more than just a way to organize samples for testing. “This is a culture change, a fundamental change in the way we do things,” said Iris Rodriguez, laboratory manager for sample management in San Antonio. And it’s going to affect every bit of the process QualTex uses to test samples in both San Antonio and Atlanta. For the people doing the testing, it’s going to be a move from manual to digital tracking, eliminating many of the laborious processes that tend to produce data errors. But it will do something even more important: It’s going to put everyone on the same page. “We’re going to build a dashboard, so every employee will know where you stand,” Rodriguez said. “You’ll be able to see what you’re doing, to track yourself and your work. Expectations will be there, and you’re going to know where you are on a daily basis.”

For the organization, the benefits also go far beyond a software upgrade from the current Surround system. “We’re leaving money on the table because of Surround, which puts real limitations on the process of adding new clients,” said Guy Julien, director of business integration for QualTex and the leader of the STARLiMS implementation. “With STARLiMS, we will be able to configure customizations on the fly. “If some company comes to us with a box it wants tested, we will be able to test it. Essentially, this is opening up the possibility of more business.” It also helps fix a known problem with how data is made available to support billing. STARLiMS will provide accurate information about every test performed on every sample. “This system puts in place the kind of growth and speed that would have helped prevent last year’s backups,” Julien said.
When fully deployed, it also has another major benefit for customers
– the ability to locate and generate reports on any samples at any point in the testing process. “The traceability feature will be key to provide timely and relevant information,” said Shanell Williams, laboratory supervisor for sample management in Atlanta. “Our clients can begin to build their trust again,
knowing QualTex has complete oversight of their samples from the time they are received until they are resulted.” The rollout process already has begun. QualTex is working with Abbott Informatics, which owns STARLiMS, on what Julien called a layered approach to implementation. Once the software has been thoroughly tested by STARLiMS, it will be delivered to BioBridge Global Information Technology. ITS will then conduct several rounds of testing, and the functionality will be shared with members of the QualTex team. “We’ll be able to include everybody and we’ll get feedback from employees,” Rodriguez said. “They will be part of the process, especially when we are doing testing. We want people to play with it and give us their feedback.” Training will follow, with a go-live target of the fourth quarter. Work is underway on the next segment of the implementation, Batch Release, with a goal of getting Batch Release and Customer Operations all on STARLiMS in the first half of 2017. The complete rollout will take about 18 months, Julien said. “Any kind of organization that expects to have 24-hour-a-day operations needs this kind of a system,” Julien said. “It’s absolutely vital.” n

My great-grandparents and their children, which included my grandfather and two great-uncles, immigrated to the United States from Belgium after World War II. They traveled 18 days by boat and landed in Tampa Florida, eventually settling in Devine. After living and working with friends, they saved up enough to buy their own farmland. They went on to be very successful farmers in that area, receiving many awards at the South Texas Vegetable Show held annually in San Antonio. They became very well-known across Medina and Bexar counties, and expanded their farms to D’Hanis and Hondo.

My many-greats-grandfather, John Lawrence, was one of the first settlers in the Dakota Territory. He wound up in Yankton in the Dakota Territory, and he served in a number of territorial and federal offices, including sergeant at arms of the U.S. House of Representatives and deputy U.S. marshal in the Dakotas, and he was the first treasurer of the county named for him in 1877.

James Douglas, my many-times-great grandfather, was the leader of Clan Douglas and known to those who feared him as The Black Douglas. During the 12th century, he was one of the chief commanders in the Wars of Scottish Independence, earning a reputation for his tactical brilliance. At one point, he surprised the garrison of a tower by disguising his warriors as the sheep that were supposed to be grazing nearby.

I am the niece of Emma Tenayuca; she is one of my dad’s sisters. Our names are different because hers was misspelled at birth, and she decided to keep it that way. She helped lead the famous Texas pecan shellers’ strike in 1938, when the company cut their pay and forced them to work in poor conditions. Aunt Emma tried to get better pay and more humane working conditions for the workers. She ended up going to jail many times, was blacklisted and labeled a communist, and eventually had to leave town. She came back many years later and taught in the Harlandale ISD until 1982.

Patty Garcia: Making blood donation a habit
F
or Patty Garcia, making her regular platelet donation is like taking a spa day. “They put a warm blanket over me, I get to watch a movie,” she said. “It’s like spa day. They come over a check on me, I love it. It makes me feel like someone’s paying attention. It’s very relaxing and it makes me feel good.” Those spa days – and a history of whole-blood donations before them – are a regular occurrence for Garcia. She started going to blood drives when she came to the city to attend the radio-television-film program at San Antonio College, and she has been giving ever since. A recent donation put her at seven gallons. “I’m really happy to do that for the community, and I look forward to hopefully donating another seven gallons,” she said. “That would be great.” That dedication followed her through a career in local radio – she worked on the air for several stations, including Y100 and KONO – as well as time with KSAT-TV. For the past three years, she has served on the staff of Councilman Cris Medina. Working for the councilman keeps her busy, but she still manages to make her regular trip to the Donor Pavilion – and get others to donate, in her own way. “I’m not sure how I encourage people to go, but I can tell
you that it works because I found out not too long ago that two of my nephews have started donating blood because they knew that I was doing it,” she said. “I think it’s just by example – I’ve led by example, particularly to my friends and family.” She posts about her donations on Facebook, and she has a group of friends who will challenge each other to give. “If I don’t remember and a friend of mine goes, they nudge me and I nudge another friend,” she said. “It’s sort of a chain reaction.” And kind of like a spa day, getting away from it all for a couple of hours. She also makes sure to heed the advice to eat a good meal after a donation.

Don’t be a stranger – help this Texas Ranger
O
ne of Al Cuellar’s passions when he was a Texas Ranger was taking care of the quiet victims of
crimes. “There are people who have never asked anything of the state of Texas,” Cuellar said in an interview for the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum in 2009. “When they become victims, you just work day and night because they deserve that help. “They’re the people who really need the help, and they’re the people who ask the least of you.” But now it’s Cuellar’s turn to need help. Cuellar, a member of the state’s elite law enforcement agency from 1978-96, is suffering from a serious bone marrow disorder known as myleodysplastic syndrome (MDS). His best chance for recovery is to have a bone marrow transplant. Currently, there is no bone marrow match available for Cuellar on any of
the global registries. That’s why the GenCure marrow donor program
is scheduling a series of registration drives across South Texas. GenCure also has set up a website to promote the effort, at GenCure.org/ RangerCuellar. Cuellar is a native of South Texas, and he lives in Helotes. He was a state trooper for 10 years in East Texas before joining the Texas Rangers’ Company D, based in San Antonio. He worked on a wide range of cases during his 16 years as a Ranger, from livestock theft to murder, in a five-county area. He believed that a big part of his job was helping people. “Whether you pay state taxes in San Antonio or state taxes in Utopia … and a crime happens, you’re entitled to the same kind of service as anybody else,” he said in the 2009 interview. One of Cuellar’s other duties with the Rangers through the years was serving on the security details for governors. In the oral history, he said he had pleasant experiences with all of them. “Ann Richards was a very nice lady,” he said. “She had a lot of people with her all the time, and they were all real friendly. After her business, they would say ‘Cuellar, let’s go east
somewhere, pick a place for us.’ “I’d call a restaurant and I’d say ‘I’m going to be down there, can you clear a table? I’m coming with Ann Richards, the governor.’ They would say ‘You’re kidding me!’ And I’d say ‘No, I’m serious, and I’m going to be there in a few minutes.’ ” Cuellar was diagnosed with MDS in 2013, and then acute myeloid leukemia in 2014. After chemotherapy and an extended hospital stay, he went into remission at the end of 2014. The MDS returned in late 2015, so he is undergoing chemotherapy again and searching for a compatible bone marrow donor. n

Educating the media and the community about the need for blood is an important part of our mission.
As we all know, a single blood donation can help up to three people in South Texas But STBTC also has a way for donors to have a global impact, to join a worldwide community dedicated to building a safe blood supply around the world. It’s done through the Global Blood Fund. The GBF works with organizations in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and South America to ensure the safety and suitability of blood supplies through a variety of methods. The Global Blood Fund was founded in 2008, and it is operated almost exclusively by volunteers from the blood banking industry here in the United States, as well as in the United Kingdom. Joining forced with the GBF is simple. Donors log into or set up their Donating for Life accounts, then donate accumulated from blood donations to the Global Blood Fund. “From the tens of millions of blood donors to the network of medical, scientific and management professionals working to ensure their donation gets to the patient in need, people seem to recognize that there is something magical about blood donation,” the GBF notes on its website. “People giving blood so that strangers they will never know might live is a shared experience across the planet, and its humanity unites us. GBF works to create opportunities for individuals and organizations to help others within this shared community.”
