I hope that you all had a nice Thanksgiving holiday. It’s now been about two months since I joined the BioBridge Global (BBG) team, and I can confidently state that I am more excited today about what the future holds for our company than the day I walked in. As you all know better than I, it is sometimes unsettling when there are leadership changes in an organization. Linda Myers served this organization well, and she will always have a special place in our hearts. I think we can best honor her legacy by continuing BBG on the growth pathway that Linda helped create. One of the ways we can do this is by finalizing some of the key contracts/relationships that were identified under her watch. For example, in November, we completed and signed our contract manufacturing agreement with StemBioSys in the cell therapy area, and we are near completion (at the time of this writing) of our contract manufacturing agreement with RoosterBio. These two strategic agreements, in partnership with our alliance with the U.S. Army’s ISR (Institute for Surgical Research), are key to us fulfilling our obligations under the MTEC (Medical Technology Enterprise Consortium) contract and they set us up well for future contracts/collaborations in the regenerative medicine space. Special thanks to Becky Cap and her team for getting this done. The year 2016, with all of its highs and lows, has gone by very quickly and 2017 will soon be upon us. What do I foresee in 2017, you might ask? Well, while it is difficult to predict perfectly what will happen in the future, there are a few things that the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) – those team members who report directly to me – want to accomplish in the upcoming year. Of course we will all have many projects/initiatives that we will be involved in over the coming year, but the “Top 5” things that I, along with the SLT, would like to see us accomplish are as follows: 1. Be self-sustaining, by generating operating profit for the full year 2017 2. Be innovators, by completing Phase I of the QualTex Automation Project in Atlanta 3. Increase operating efficiencies by: a. Building and executing an ITS Architecture Strategy b. Building and implementing a new Quality Management System 4. Work to achieve an Employee Engagement (EE) score of at least 70 in our 2017 EE survey 5. Complete a new Facilities Master Plan (and start to execute on short-term initiatives) By doing these Top 5 things very well, I believe that we will not only have a year that is satisfying in terms of what we accomplished together, but we will set ourselves up for success in the future. These should be the top priorities for all of us in 2017. And we have a few good things going for us as we enter the new year. In addition to the StemBioSys and RoosterBio agreements I mentioned earlier, in 2017, we will start to see lower reagent costs through our new Abbott supply agreement negotiated by Ward Carter and his team and lower blood bag costs through our new contract with Fenwal negotiated by Elizabeth Waltman and her team. The GenCure team is evaluating several new revenue opportunities, in addition to the Baptist Health System contract signed back in October. We are automating our Donor Questionnaire process and completing the implementation of STARLiMS to improve customer experience and information systems. The electronic donor questionnaire went live on Nov. 15 at the Westover Hills Donor Room, followed by Shavano Park and Northeast. The remaining San Antonio, New Braunfels and Victoria sites will implement Donor Doc in December, with the mobile drives completing the rollout in January. “We couldn’t have done this without a dedicated team of people on the project,” said James Randle, assistant director of mobile operations and one of the project’s leaders in STBTC. The Donor Doc system eventually will eliminate both the paper donor questionnaire and the paperwork generated through the rest of the blood donation process. All the data will be input directly into El Dorado, including phlebotomy records and the information that will be generated Manuel Alvarez gets a donor started in the new mixer on the process at the Shavano Park system. Stories from the cellular therapy room Just about every week, there’s a generous soul visiting the GenCure Cellular Therapy Donor Room, giving peripheral blood stem cells to help save the life of someone fighting leukemia, lymphoma or a related condition. Here are some of their stories:

Ana wanted to be on the Be The Match registry so much, she says she signed up at “two or three” different registration drives at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Brownsville. A native of Brownsville, she is a psychology major at UTRGV who wants to earn her Ph.D and go into private practice. “What would I tell people about being a donor? Make sure you’re healthy and schedule your classes online.”

Donor Doc eliminates the data entry process from the questionnaire, reducing the potential for errors. It also helps staff make sure all required follow-up questions from the initial health history screening are asked and documented. The other members of the Donor Doc team were Jack Campbell, Christie Cardenas, Ron Chavez, Azalea Elizondo, John Escobedo, Annette Galindo-Garza, Monica Garcia, Dina Garza Van Hoose, Will Keener, Rose Preciado, Linda Rapp, Linda Smith, Veronica Torres and Sam Waran. n
William was a student at the University of Texas at Austin in 2012 when he went to a magic show on campus. Part of the show was a pitch to join the registry. “I was shocked and surprised when they called,” he says. “It costs nothing to sign up, and you could save someone’s life.” He considers his donation part of his job with the Every Nation Ministry, a nondenominational family of churches around the world. n

What attracted you to the organization?

The primary attraction for me was our mission and the opportunity to help more people. Health care is unique in that, done well, we can truly make a positive difference in people’s lives. Secondarily, I was attracted by our scale and the growth opportunities before us. I like trying to build winning teams that accomplish more than what was perhaps expected and I was intrigued by the opportunity to work in some new areas with bright people.
What are your first impressions?

The mission is strong here, which is good. People want to do a good job and help people, which is also good. In some areas, people feel overwhelmed by the number of projects/initiatives they are assigned to, and I did not have a good sense for project definition or what the priorities were/are – I want to help organize that a bit, so that people can be and feel successful. If we work hard, I want it to be on activities that benefit patients, customers and the business. I also have an expectation that our team members give us their best effort and work every day.
What has impressed you the most so far?

What has impressed me most so far is people’s focus on the mission, 8
and I see a strong effort in good stewardship. As a result of that, I want to do my part to help further the mission and demonstrate good stewardship. One of the ways I think I can do this is to make sure that we operate profitably, so that we are selfsustaining and we can invest in new ways, or further extend our current ways, of helping people in need. That also involves planning for and handling tool and equipment life cycles, and many of you know that we continue to maintain some equipment well beyond its expected useful life. That is admirable, but also may inject risk into our mission. To be able to save or enhance another’s life is truly a noble mission.
Where do you see BioBridge Global headed?

I see BioBridge Global growing first and foremost, because without growth, we will soon be challenged in carrying out our mission. I also want to fulfill the Board’s aspiration when they created the name BioBridge Global. That will develop slowly at first, as we have many domestic plans to achieve, but I don’t see any reason why someday we shouldn’t or couldn’t be helping patients and providers around the world. With the areas/ segments that we are now operating in, I also see us becoming more scientific and perhaps participating in new discoveries/therapies – I just hope that I am able to keep up!

Also, could you tell us a little about yourself? Where you’re from, how you wound up in San Antonio, your interests outside work?

I’m a northerner – grew up in South Dakota – but I’ve been here for over 30 years now, so I’m starting to acclimate. When I first arrived, I could swim in Canyon Lake in February – no problem – but not anymore! I’m from a big family – eight – with four boys and four girls. I like being outdoors. I grew up playing sports, so I use a lot of sports analogies. My wife and I have four kids – all played soccer in college, but all stopped by their senior year. We all love the Spurs. (Are you sensing the sports theme?). I HATE to lose – so I want BBG and all of its business units to be best-in-class. Finally, I realize that nothing good happens without all members of the team pulling together. Every person matters – hopefully you will see that from me. n

The BBG app is coming to a mobile device near you BioBridge Global team members soon will have a new way to stay in touch. The BBG app for employees will launch the week of the next BBG Summit, Jan. 23-27, with versions for both iOS and Android devices. The app, which will be developed through a company called Emplify, is designed to be a way for team members to keep up with the organization, as well as access vital information, anytime and anywhere. Among the features: •A directory of employees •L inks to HR resources including insurance and payroll information • Th e ability to receive push notifications about new content •A section dedicated to the BBG values, mission and vision •A news page, with content about BBG, as well as stories about employees, donors patients and more The app will be available via a private link, and employees will be able to opt-in for some or all push notifications from the company.
