From the desk of the CEO When I came to work for the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center in July of 1994, I hardly knew what to expect.

I had been director of the blood bank at Scott & White Hospital in Temple for three years, and as we all know, South Texas can be like a completely different world. But things, as they often do, worked out well through the years.

There were some lows, to be sure, but they were more than overshadowed by the highs. From becoming the first U.S. blood bank to earn ISO certification way back in 1996 to the recent recognition of our strategic planning by the Balanced Scorecard Institute, we have continued to move forward.

Our new initiative to establish a values-based organization is still in its earliest phases, but I’m thrilled with the progress so far, and I believe it’s going to make a difference in the longterm future at BBG. As I head toward retirement, there’s one thing that stands out to me after all the years – the people here. From my very first days as a technical director through the last three years as your CEO, I have appreciated the dedication and devotion of the staff. Every day, you come in with a purpose – to make life better here in South Texas and around the world.

From taking care of our donors to making sure blood and tissue donations are as safe as possible, you stand out. When we revived our companywide blood drive last summer, you turned out in huge numbers. Every day, you do the little things that make working together special.

From techs on mobile drives to scientists in the labs, from the Tower to Atlanta, from technical support to facilities, you represent the best our communities have to offer.

I want to thank you all, every day, for bringing the best to our organization.

y now, quite a few folks across the enterprise have heard me say that every time my boss gets an email that includes the word “committee,” it automatically gets forwarded to me.

But honestly, it’s an honor to be chosen, especially for the committees related to the new ASPIRE values. Helping build a set of solid organizational values and a great company culture is important work. Most of the world’s most-respected organizations are constructed on principles that can be applied from the executive suite to the loading dock.

Several examples of companies living on values came out when People Ink came on board with its Built on Values program, including Southwest Airlines and JetBlue. But there are plenty more examples. The U.S. Army has had a set of clearly defined values, similar in form and style to ASPIRE, for almost 10 years.

At Twitter, the culture fosters mutual respect and admiration among employees. There’s also a fanatical dedication to personal growth and innovation.

Zappos has become as famous for its culture as for footwear. It’s the kind of place where half the questions in a job interview relate to being a good fit in the organization’s structure.

Software developer Atlassian went from a company started with $10,000 in credit card debt to a billion-dollar global organization by developing and sticking to some plainspoken values.

The examples are everywhere, but no two organizations are alike. That’s why so many of us are taking part in the values committees, to make sure we reach to every corner of the enterprise. It’s also why this edition of Heart to Heart is focused on ASPIRE – it needs to be a part of everything we do.

Even on days when these two clock in before the sun comes up and after the sun goes down, they are inspiring. Their sense of stewardship goes above and beyond with their donors, knowing how to communicate on an individual basis in a friendly and informative matter, forming relationships with donors and making them feel at ease.

Yolanda and Rosie communicate effectively not only with their donors, but their team as well. When the donor flow is slow, they stay busy by restocking, performing data entry and assisting where needed.

Dina challenges operational processes where there are opportunities to improve, thus, making her a pioneer. She holds herself and others accountable for behaviors, actions and results. She accepts responsibility, offers solutions and follows through. It doesn’t matter if it is a $5 contribution, a reimbursement for services or a multi-million dollar grant award, it is my goal to make sure that my programs and our donors know that their gifts are in good hands and will be utilized according to their wishes.”

In honor of her upcoming retirement from BBG, here’s a brief timeline of highlights of CEO Linda Myers’ 20-plus years with the organization: 2002

1994

1996

Joined the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center, coming from Scott & White Hospital in Temple.

While serving as director of quality assurance, she led effort to get STBTC named the first ISO certified blood bank in North America.

2007

Played a major role in a building expansion project that added 44,000 square feet.

2011

2009

Joined QualTex when it was established as a separate entity

Guided efforts to convert all testing to Prism devices.

2014 2015

Helped lead efforts to bring the World Stem Cell Summit to San Antonio.

Worked to open a second QualTex location, in Norcross, Georgia. Named president and COO of QualTex.

2016 BBG earns the Balanced Scorecard Institute’s award for excellence in strategic planning.

Named one of the winners of the Health Care Heroes award from the San Antonio Business Journal.
