From the desk of the CEO Two years ago, we adopted a balanced scorecard/strategy map system, and the initial emphasis was on internal improvement. As it turned out, the system worked. With the Strategy Management Office focusing the enterprise internally, we uncovered many ways to improve ourselves, from top to bottom. In the last two years, a lot of work has gone into making meaningful changes throughout BioBridge Global, from staffing to R&D to infrastructure, and that work will continue. Some of the related projects will continue for the next two to three years. But now we’re introducing two new business themes: growth and transformation. We want to grow our current products and services, and we’re looking to transform by developing new products and services. It’s what virtually every business has to do at some point – look outside itself for opportunities. These business themes are designed to guide discussions and decisions in every area of the company. They help us with everything from budgeting to project selection, as well as with the process of developing business plans. In the world of strategic planning, it’s called “alignment.” We want everything we do to contribute to promote the plan. As you probably learned at a strategy session for your business unit, Mark Gager and his team are using and adapting industry-standard systems to develop and manage our strategic plans. As part of the new themes, we also are introducing our BBG vision and mission statements. Our vision statement is designed to reach into every part of the enterprise and make excellence our standard: “To be a global leader in human cellular services.” The mission statement ties everything together: “To save and enhance lives through the healing power of human cells.” You’ll be hearing more about the new business themes, as well as our vision and mission statements, in the coming months.

his is the latest in our responses to the ideas, suggestions and opinions you expressed in that brief communications survey back in June.
nY ou preferred to get company information via email, so we created our weekly email, The Update. nY ou said you turned to eConnect on a regular basis, so we have beefed up content there. You liked to see posts on the company bulletin boards, so we kept putting up items on the bulletin boards. nA nd you read Connections once a month, so we cleverly switched it to quarterly production, so you only would read it once every three months. Actually, the goals with Heart to Heart are a little different. Our aim is to get you talking – with your coworkers, with folks from other departments and other business units, and with us. The best way to do it was to expand and modify our focus. And frankly, we want your content, since this magazine is for you and about you. Have a cool work photo? Send it to us. Did you get your master’s degree? Let us know. Cubiclemate came to work with purple hair? Maybe, maybe not. This first edition was limited to 12 pages, but if we start getting a stream of your content, it could very well grow by the time December rolls around. Ray and Rene

ir conditioner not cooling? On it. Faucet leaking? No problem. A cabinet full of computer equipment falling off the wall? Well… “That was a tricky little situation,” says Rene Arteaga, who along with Ray Pineda is a building maintenance technician with BioBridge Global. “We figured out how to get it back up without disconnecting power or losing any service. “We kind of surprised ourselves with that one.” Arteaga and Pineda are part of Facilities and Fleet Operations, but there isn’t a department or a title that precisely fits their jobs. “Got to be ready to jump from a forklift to a plumbing repair,” Pineda says. “You never get

bored with one job, because you’re doing so many at a time. It’s always different.” They readily admit that they are “work with your hands” guys. Both served in the military, Pineda in the Army working on helicopters and Arteaga in the Navy, working on construction projects with the Seabees. Both have had desk jobs and hated them. Both have had other maintenance jobs, and liked them much better. And they thoroughly enjoy what they’re doing now. Arteaga has been with the

organization since 2008 and Pineda was here from 2003-08 and came back last year. “It’s a good place to work,” Pineda says. “If you like maintenance, this is the place to be. Arteaga has a shop at his home where he works on restoring cars, from a 1952 Chevy pickup to a ’65 Mustang. Read all about it! Save a life, save a tree: Donor questionnaires going digital This January, the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center will be saving paper and streamlining the donation process at the same time. With the implementation of the electronic donor questionnaire system, donors will be able to answer screening questions on touch-screen devices at either fixed sites or mobile drives. A version for donors to complete on their personal computers will be available some time in 2016 as well. STBTC staff members will be able to record donors’ miniphysical results, as well as their deferral status, all without filling out a form.
Donors currently complete an estimated 150,000 paper questionnaires a year. All the paper records require manual data entry and checking for errors, steps to be eliminated with the new electronic system. The system is similar to one already in use by a number of blood centers around the United States. The only major change for donors will be a requirement that they create a login to the system, using their donor ID number. Staff members will have usernames and passwords to access the system, which is produced by a company called Haemonetics Software Solutions. Training on the new system will begin this fall.

Jon Ugarte: L
A survivor’s story
ike a lot of 20-year-olds, Jon Ugarte’s favorite things to do are listen to music, dance and spend time with his family. But Jon, who is living with Down syndrome, is also a survivor of lymphoblastic leukemia.
In 2006, Jon was one of thousands of patients with life-threatening diseases hoping for a marrow donor match to make a transplant possible. Only 30 percent of patients have a match within their families; the rest depend on the community at large.
After his diagnosis, Jon’s mother Lisa began to learn about his disease and the need for a transplant. Several marrow drives were held for Jon, adding multiple donors to the national registry. The drives did not find a marrow match for Jon, but the Ugartes’ prayers were answered when a cord blood match was found in January 2011. Cord blood is the blood that remains in the placenta and umbilical cord after a baby is born. An alternative to a marrow transplant, cord blood
Only 30 percent of patients have a match within their families; the rest depend on the community at large. is also rich in blood-making stem cells and can be used to treat patients with certain cancers and fatal blood disorders. Throughout Jon’s battle with cancer, the Ugarte family also hosted blood drives. Jon’s five years of chemotherapy treatment required multiple blood transfusions, sometimes as often a twice a week. Even after his cord blood transplant, Jon received blood transfusions to keep his body in stable condition to continue to fight the disease. After completing his treatments for the leukemia, Jon is in remission. He is in good health and good spirits, and the Ugartes are thankful for the work of GenCure and the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center.n

Honoring the Team The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center recognized a big part of the team during national Blood Collectors Week. These hard-working folks received commemorative pins, lanyards and T-shirts, as well as lunch and snacks throughout the week.

Camp Discovery Dance Team members volunteered for the annual dance at Camp Discovery, which provides a summer camp experience for children with cancer. The ‘Dancing with the Stars of Camp Discovery’ Homecoming Dance served its purpose, entertaining campers and staff alike.
Team members took part in the Camp Discovery Pep Rally, which featured all kinds of food and snacks and helped raise funds for children with cancer to attend the summer camp.
