In this issue of Connect, we are honored to be able to highlight some of our incredible small businesses from right here in Lufkin and Angelina County. Small businesses are the backbone of every community. They provide their local economy with new jobs, products, revenue, services, and more. They keep the American Dream alive! Our staff works daily for you! We do our best to keep updated with Legislative priorities both locally, on the state level, and nationally and we are always on calls and Zoom meetings with our US Chamber of Commerce and the Texas Association of Business to stay in the know. We want to make sure we stay educated so that we can help your business continue to grow and prosper in East Texas. We also love to celebrate your accomplishments. Greetings from the Expo! By Burt Hairgrove
Summer is here and we are coming off a great Spring run of great events! As Summer progresses, July and August have traditionally been slower months, with fewer events that give us time to do some routine maintenance and “spring cleaning”. However, as we book events later into June and earlier in August, the summer has gotten much shorter as groups realize what great deal Lufkin, Texas is. Since the focus of this issue is on small business, we like to give some recognition to all of the small businesses that support the Expo by displaying sponsor signs throughout the facility. As I write this article, I am realizing that every time I pick up the phone to have someone address an issue out here, it is usually a small business that I am calling. Whether it is a plumbing or electrical contractor, lawncare equipment, pressure washing, tires, tree removal, paint, rental equipment or almost anything we deal with on a day to day basis out here at the Expo, a small business right here in Lufkin comes alongside us to help. Please do your part and support our local business operators the way they support us. As for our event calendar… We want to wish everyone a safe and fun 4th of July. The Expo will be dark most of the month as we are getting ready for events through the last half of the year. August 12-13 the Pineywoods Youth Rodeo Association will kick off the 2023/24 season in Lufkin. The Lufkin FFA will have their annual livestock show here on August 19. Region V of the Texas High School Rodeo Association will have their “Get Acquainted” rodeo that starts their season off along with the Junior High division on August 26-27. 5 Signs You’re a Community Leader
L
eadership comes in many forms, from those who inspire dedication and support to those who rule through fear and intimidation. A true leader is someone who can command those under them without having to resort to extreme tactics. Many great leaders share some common traits, so work to improve these qualities in yourself to establish yourself as a leader in your community. A Vision for the Future You won't get very far as a community leader if you don't have a destination in mind. In order to get your friends and neighbors to rally around you, they need to have a sense of what your goals are for the community. Take the time to think about what it is that you want for your neighborhood, and find out whether others share your vision. This way, you can all begin to work together towards a common goal. Humility One of the marks of a great leader is the ability to recognize when you don't know something. Admitting that you need outside help or advice is not a sign of weakness but rather a show of wisdom. Just because you ask for help doesn't make you any less of a leader. Of course, you don't want to discount your own knowledge, as you have a unique perspective to offer your community. The key is to recognize when others are more qualified to handle certain tasks. True leaders know when to do the work themselves and when to delegate. Charisma Some people seem to have a quality about them that just draws people to them, even if you can't pinpoint what it is exactly. You'll 20
need charisma to succeed as a community leader because you need to be able to persuade people to listen to what you have to say. Take every opportunity you can get to refine your public speaking and networking skills. As you continue to rise through the ranks of your community, you'll need to draw on these skills more and more frequently. Bringing Out the Best in Others A true leader knows how to maximize other people's strengths by encouraging and supporting them. Rather than clawing your way to the top by tearing down those around you, it is far better to build yourself up by building a strong team. With everyone working together, the entire team gains greater recognition, and as the leader, you'll get the most recognition of all. You'll get greater loyalty from your team as well, as they'll be more inclined to support you when they feel valued and that their skills are being put to good use. Patience You won't become a community leader overnight, so you'll need to have the patience necessary to gradually build your audience over time. Celebrating Outstanding Community Leadership:
Jack O. (Butch) McMullen Silver Spike Award The Lufkin/Angelina County Chamber of Commerce takes pride in recognizing individuals who have shown exceptional community leadership through the Jack O. (Butch) McMullen Silver Spike Award. Named after the late Jack O. (Butch) McMullen, a prominent figure in various fields, this prestigious award honors Leadership Lufkin alumni who have made significant contributions to the community. The Silver Spike Award celebrates those who have gone above and beyond in their dedication to improving the lives of others. With nominations accepted from the public and a thorough selection process, the winner will be announced during the October First Friday Luncheon on Friday, October 6, 2023. The Silver Spike award is a testament to the remarkable legacy of Jack O. (Butch) McMullen, who demonstrated exemplary leadership throughout his life. When his father passed away in 1983, Butch took on the responsibility of leading the A&NR Railroad. His dedication and capability led to his election as Vice President at the age of 33, a remarkable achievement in the industry. Jack O. (Butch) McMullen's leadership extended beyond his professional endeavors. He was an active member of his church and was widely recognized for his abilities to guide and inspire others. Charles McIlveen, a close associate, remarked that Butch was always prepared to take on leadership roles. In the community, Butch was involved in several organizations, including being a member the first Leadership Lufkin class. He later served as the chairman for various notable organizations such as the United Way, the American Heart Association, the Lions Club, and the Planning and Zoning
committee. Through his involvement, Butch encouraged others to engage in community service and make a difference. Butch McMullen was known for his visionary thinking and his efforts to shape the future of Angelina County. In 1989, he made a crucial decision by hiring David Perkins, which proved to be instrumental in the county's development. Butch's forward-thinking approach and ability to identify talent showcased his commitment to the long-term prosperity of the community. The Jack O. (Butch) McMullen Silver Spike Award acknowledges that community leadership comes in many forms. While some leaders are highly visible, others work tirelessly behind the scenes to contribute in significant ways. This award shines a spotlight on those unsung heroes who have made invaluable contributions and highlights their remarkable achievements. To ensure that deserving individuals are considered, the nomination form and a list of criteria outlining the qualities and achievements expected of potential recipients is included on the next page. Since 1991, Leadership Lufkin has annually selected an outstanding graduate of the program to honor with the Silver Spike Award. Named in memory of Butch McMullen of the Angelina and Neches River Railroad, the award is presented to a graduate of at least 10 years who has excelled in their role as a leader in all areas of his or her life.
