How Green is your ville?

My family and I got out of town for a few days last week, camping up in the northwest corner of South Carolina. On the way back home we stopped in Greenville, S.C., to get a bite to eat and walk around.

It had been quite awhile since I’d been to Greenville, and boy has it changed.

If all you know about the place is ultra-conservative Bob Jones University, you’ve missed the boat. Downtown Greenville boasts one of the most tasteful and visitor-friendly downtown renovations I’ve seen anywhere. There are surely some lessons there for Savannah as well.

Most of Greenville’s Main Street from the Hyatt down to the most recently restored area, the West End, is an unbroken scene of diverse restaurants, quality shops without tourist schlock, and — gasp — actual sidewalk cafes with actual sidewalk seating! The horror!

As with most downtown renovations around the U.S.—Savannah being a curious and notable exception—colorful banners hang from Greenville’s street lamps, calling attention to the latest festival or cultural happening going on.

Why Savannah doesn’t do more of this is a

total mystery to me. A single eight-foot banner at the corner of Drayton and Park to promote the Shakespeare Festival or Picnic in the Park is all well and good, but not enough. Certainly there are other places to hang attractive banners calling attention to those events, or to other events like the Telfair’s Juneteenth Week or the Savannah Asian Festival or the Savannah Film Festival or Archaeofest at Battlefield Park.

City Council routinely passes millions of dollars in expenses for infrastructure improvements and maintenance, usually quickly and unanimously. But apparently the cost of 40 or 50 two-by-four banners and a small crew to put them up is too high to bear.

(This is not something that should be shoehorned out of the Cultural Affairs budget, by the way, but that should be an important City/

Chamber of Commerce/CVB priority. Throw us a bone here, Michael Brown! Whassup, Bill Hubbard? Say it ain’t so, Joe Marinelli!)

The centerpiece of downtown Greenville — sort of their River Street — is Falls Park on the Reedy, a clean, well-manicured riverside vista where people can wade in the water, picnic, sit and chill, or take in the view from a pedestrian bridge over the river. It’s an eyeopening comparison to our own River Street, which lately seems to be experiencing a return to its seedy waterfront roots and is decades overdue for a legitimate upgrade.

I mean, Savannah River Landing is great and all — great for a marshy sump next to a wastewater treatment plant, that is — but what’s River Street, chopped liver?

Let’s just cut to the chase: There are a lot of people in Savannah with dislocated shoulders from patting themselves on the back and sore rear ends from resting on their laurels. But if they’d take a break from their mutual admiration society, they’d see that some other cities are flat-out kicking our well-rested butts when it comes to smart revitalization.

As for the usual comeback when I compare Savannah unfavorably to another locale: “Why don’t you just move there, then?”

Hey, don’t tempt me. There’s no weekly independent paper in Greenville — yet!

Bicycling wisdom Editor, I enjoyed the piece on the Melaver firm and their experiences riding bikes downtown (July 2). I also live and work downtown and very often walk or ride my bike.

A few comments that readers should be mindful of, if they too take to the streets with bicycles: Yes, drivers in cars should take notice of everything going on around them - signs, pedestrians, bikes, other cars - but you can help them by not being where you oughtn’t. Bikes should not be on sidewalks or in crosswalks (unless you are dismounted and walking your bike). You are a vehicle and those areas are reserved for foot traffic.

I have been in a car when a bike has shot out from a square into the crosswalk, without stopping or looking. Cars cannot be expected to see through bushes and predict a bike where it isn’t supposed to be (there is a $150 fine for riding your bike in the square but I have

yet to hear of anyone ever enforcing that).

Additionally, since you are a vehicle, you still have to abide by the rules of the road - stop at stop signs and lights - and don’t drive the opposite direction on a one way street.

It’s true, many cars don’t share the road as well as they might, so it’s best to remain on the right as much as possible to allow faster traffic to pass. I’ve had the experience of seeing a parked car open its door nearly into me and it wasn’t fun. But now I watch for signs, like a head in the driver’s seat or brake lights on.

There should be more cyclists out there. It is a great way to get around town, and after the cost of the bike, it’s free! Parking is a breeze (which is also free).

If we bike more often and make sure cars can predict where we are, Savannah will be even more of a bike-friendly town.

Regina on oil Editor, Regarding your recent interview with Regina Thomas: Opposing John Barrow for the chance to be top Democrat in the 12th is all well and good, but why did you let her dodge the questions about oil? OK, so she doesn’t want to drill in ANWR; so, then what is her big solution?

Even if she had said something about alternative fuel, at least it would have been something. Ms. Thomas is going to have to give the people more than the usual conspiratorial nonsense to explain lack of action IF she gets elected.

We have enough of those folks in Washington already.

Dave Williams remains in Intensive Care at Memorial hospital.

When the going gets tough...

Donors help keep nonprofits going, but times are still difficult

The residents of the Old Savannah City Mission’s emergency shelter sweltered in the heat for three long months when one of two air-conditioning units failed.

Donations to the mission are down, and there simply wasn’t enough money for repairs, says executive director Jim Lewis.

“We’re down 23.6 percent compared to the same period of time last year,” he says.

“We’re scrambling.”

There’s no doubt people today are struggling just to put food on the table. A combination of soaring gasoline prices and rising food costs is making it difficult even to provide the basic necessities, much less enjoy a few extras. Many people are trying to work longer hours or work a second job to bring needed revenue in.

“I’m working right now on trying to sell clothing, bric-a-brac and shoes,” Lewis says. “This is forcing us to be more conscious of potential revenue through lawn service, or any labor our students can do.

“Staff, students, volunteers are all pitching in, trying to keep lights on and food on table,” he says. “It isn’t easy. We’re in tough times.”

There have been tough times in the past, but Lewis says nothing has ever had such an effect on the mission. When repairs were needed in the past, they might impact the budget, but they could be done.

Fortunately, a local business came through to help. Byrd Heating and Air Conditioning stepped in to make the needed repairs, and Lewis is grateful.

But there are even greater needs. “One thing people can do in the community is to think in terms of donating,” Lewis says.

“We need food, and we have a market for clothes, shoes, toys, bric-a-brac. We’re willing to do most anything.”

The mission doesn’t depend entirely on donations, although donations are important. “I read recently where charitable giving has flat-lined over the last 30 years,” Lewis says.

“People may be giving more but percentage-wise they’re not. Small, private non-profits are turning to industrial activities, trying to collect cans and stuff that can be converted. Folks can get rid of stuff and our students can see the value of being productive. They can participate in funding their own recovery.”

The cost of fuel has severely impacted the mission. “We still try to pick up things when people donate,” Lewis says. “But our

fuel costs have doubled. We try to make sure when our vehicle leaves, that it’s going to two or three places along the same route.”

As revenues fall and expenses rise, even more people are in need of help. “There’s a correlation there,” Lewis says. “This is not isolated.

“We have more people coming in who aren’t making it to the end of month, to the next payday,” he says. “They know they can come here and eat and be absolutely welcome.”

The economy has influenced donations, Lewis says. “A lot of people are holding back,” he says. “They don’t know if they might get laid off. They don’t know how much gasoline is going up. Some people are anticipating the worst that can happen.

When you’re waiting for bad news, you can get it.”

In times of need, folks at the Old Savannah City Mission reach out for help. “We write letters,” Lewis says. “We’re always challenged in fund-raising. But this time, we’re dealing with genuine shortfalls. We need good-hearted people to step up to the plate and say. ‘I can do this, I can help.’

“Before, we were expanding services,” Lewis says. “This is causing us to take into account how far we go out on a limb. How long do you keep putting a little more water in the soup? With some things, we’re so stretched. We’ve got people who are trying help us in getting the word out. Those businesses that normally step up and help us are taking a second look. It’s a domino effect.”

Some non-profits are doing pretty well -- for now. “As far as food is concerned, we’re doing okay,” says Mary Jane Crouch, executive director of America’s Second Harvest of the Coastal Empire.

A fund-raising concert with headliners Stewart & Winfield was recently held. “The city and the county responded in such a generous manner,” Crouch says.

Still Crouch worries about the future.

“Our transportation costs have been greatly impacted,” she says. “When we get a load of food in, we have to pay for transportation.”

to turn it down. “What used to cost $600 to bring in a truckload of corn now costs $1,200,” Crouch says. “We’re finding that transportation costs are extremely high in comparison to last year. It’s something that is very concerning for us.”

Second Harvest could be facing a long-term shortage of funding, but at least they’ve got corn. “A gentleman had sent a check,” Crouch says. “I wrote a note and said ‘You’re the one who let us bring the corn in.’

“The corn was fresh and right at 40,000 pounds,” she says. “It was good, healthy food to get to people who needed it.”

It’s not just the cost of fuel that troubles

Crouch. “We’re spending a lot more,” she says. “Food costs are going up. We get as much fresh produce during the summer months as we can. In winter, we have to buy a lot more food.”

Second Harvest feeds a lot of people. “In the year, we serve around 90,000 people,” Crouch says. “They must meet income eligibility as set forth by the USDA for low poverty.

“We feed 2,000 meals through our Kids’ Cafe program,” she says. “A lot of places have summer feeding programs, however, not all kids are able to go to them. Kids need to eat as much in the summer as in the winter.”

be candid when I say we’re doing better than one might expect. But donations are down. Adoptions are slower. Animals are staying a little bit longer. Until very recently, I didn’t think surrenders were up all that much. But they were up in May from last year by about 50. I’ve noticed animals in the area as if people just let them go.

“Finances are always a component of why people surrender animals to us,” she says. “They say, ‘I’m moving, and in my new apartment, I can’t have pets.’

Sometimes what it really means is they can’t afford the added security deposit.”

Gensamer worries the situation will get worse. “I’ve heard that some vets are reporting that their reservations for spaying and neutering are way off,” she says. “That’s a big hit. The consequences will impact us down the road.”

The humane society, too, benefits from small donations. “I think people realize animals are unfortunate victims,” Gensamer says. “We’re the kind of place with a lot of donations that are $25, $10 sometimes. We don’t get $5,000 gifts.

Someone might say, ‘I’ve had a bad month, so I’m going to send $10 to the humane society because I know they’ve had a bad month, too.’”

The shelter has had some unfortunate luck in recent weeks. “We had to pay the deductible on our insurance from storm damage,” Gensamer says.

“But people were wonderful. They were bringing towels and bleach, and all the things we needed.”

Some non-profits aren’t hurting.

“Our utilities are slightly up, but not much,” says Melvin Mason, executive director of Hodge Memorial Daycare Center. “We haven’t felt the effect of it very much. Let’s hope it doesn’t get any worse.”

Union Mission, Inc. also is holding its own. “During economic downturns, our donations normally go up a little bit,” says President and CEO Micheal Elliott.

“In the social service industry, that’s often true,” he says. “People give because they’re feeling closer to homelessness or hunger, or the lack of heath care.

“They give in small increments, but more people are giving, so the dollar amount goes up. People with the least amount of money give the most,” says Elliott.

“We’re actually above budget. When you look at why, it’s because people are scared, or because a family member or friend has need of something. They’re saying, ‘I’m going to be good, I’m going to help others,’” Elliott says.

“It’s really sad sometimes when people come in and say, ‘I’ve supported you guys, and I never thought something like this would happen to me.”

Second Harvest also is sponsoring Kids’ Cafe in Bulloch, Toombs and Liberty counties. “It’s important to feed kids, because they’re our future,” Crouch says. “We have to make sure they have food.

“One in every six people in a soup line is a child,” she says. “The numbers of children are increasing at shelters and food pantries.”

The number of applicants who are seeking help also has increased. “By the time they pay rent, they can’t put food on the table,” Crouch says. “If they don’t pay the rent, they get put out on the street.

“People didn’t get a raise because gasoline went up,” she says. “What’s happened is that it used to cost $25 to fill up a car and now it’s $40. Think how much food that extra $15 could buy.”

In just one month, Second Harvest provided enough food for 45,000 meals.

There are many ways the community can help, Crouch says.

“They can conduct a food drive,” she says. “They can sponsor bringing a truckload of food in. They can go online and make a donation to us. They can sponsor a kid in Kid’s Cafe.

“They can volunteer. They can stock shelves and help us. If they give us time, it helps us keep from having to pay someone to come do something.

“We couldn’t operate if we didn’t have volunteers,” Crouch says. It’s not always about money.”

The musicians who performed at the recent concert volunteered their time.

“That’s going to help us bring more food in,” Crouch says. “Everyone has something they can give to the community.”

Savannah is very generous, Crouch says. “I’ve lived all around the United States, and I’ve found that people here truly give from the heart,” she says.

“They truly want the community to do well, and they respond when there is a need.”

Many donors themselves are low income, Crouch says. “It may be $5, but that $5 can bring in 25 pounds of food,” she says. “Those $5 checks keep us going.

“The big checks are great, of course,” Crouch says. “But it’s those people who do the fund-raisers at school, their bank, or church, that send us $25 because their church did a $25 love offering for us, that help all non-profits get through.”

It’s not just humans who are hurting.

The Humane Society of Savannah/ Chatham County is suffering not only from a loss of donations, but a drop in adoptions.

“We’re getting it at both ends,” says executive director Lynn Gensamer. “I’ll

He’s too modest to admit it, but Anthony O. Williams is a born leader. Now 18 and a recent graduate of Jenkins High School, Williams will head to Morehouse College in August. Just before he leaves, he will be inaugurated the 200809 Mr. Black Teen of Savannah.

“I want to make a contribution in life, to motivate people, to raise their aspiration levels,” Williams says. “I already work with kids as a lifeguard.

It’s tough, I’m not going to lie. Maybe people will look at me and say, ‘Maybe I can achieve the same thing.”

The youngest in his family, Williams has four older sisters. He plans to become a certified public accountant, and knows that serving as Mr. Black Teen will look good on his resume.

Williams hopes that other young men discover the competition. “I’d definitely like to see more people get involved, especially the private school sector,” he says. “It’s not just a competition. We get to bond with all the other guys in the competition. The relations we are building in the competition will last a lifetime.”

Alvin C. Edwards knows where Williams is coming from. In 2004, he was chosen the first Mr. Black Teen of Savannah. A graduate of Savannah High School and an MVP basketball player, he graduated with honors from Savannah State University on May 10.

“Being Mr. Black Teen was a really good experience,” Edwards says. “I think I set a pretty good standard.

It really gave me the opportunity to display my talents and abilities outside of sports, and also encouraged me to do well academically.”

Currently, Edwards works for the Department of Criminal Justice as a probation officer. “I took the law school exam two weeks ago,” he says. “Hopefully, I’ll be going to law school.”

Being Mr. Black Teen helped prepare Edwards for his future. “It definitely gave me great inspiration,” he says. “It gave me more responsibilities, put me in role-model perspective and really made me settle down and study.”

During his tenure, Edwards had certain duties to fulfill. “I made appearances and did community service,” he says.

“I did public speaking and community relations. I had the opportunity to go to the mayor’s office and meet the mayor.”

The pageant was developed by Lester Lec’k White, local radio personality and founder of My Dream Productions.

“I thought too many of our AfricanAmerican boys were getting a bad rap in the media,” he says. “I knew some fellows who were opposite of what was being featured.

“When I’d see these images, I’d think, ‘Why don’t they do something positive and try to spotlight the good boys, the positive ones?’ One night, I thought, ‘Why don’t you do it?’ Everyone was waiting for someone else to do something.”

The idea for a competition clicked when White was asked to be a judge for a local pageant. “I was looking at those young ladies, and wishing someone would do this for the boys,” he says.

“When we were leaving the event, a man came up to me and said, ‘I think you should do something like this because you work with young people.’

I believe that was my confirmation to start this thing.”

At first, White wasn’t sure what the response would be. But the program has been a success, not just with the young men, but also their parents.

“At first, we were feeling our way,” White says. “This is our fifth year, and more people are aware of what we’re trying to do. When we first started, some people thought we were trying to create a division. But more people are understanding now and we’re getting more support. We had a 9th grader this year who said he’d been waiting a long time to be part of this. He’s staying on the right track to be a role model.”

Uncle Sam says throw away your TV Used to be that consumer products had something called “planned obsolescence” built into them; they were designed to wear out and be thrown away (partly explaining our nation’s overflowing landfills). Now, it seems, President Bush and Congress are helping speed the solid waste crisis, giving us something corporate America likes even better: “legislated obsolescence,” or “enforced consumption.”

By any name, it may produce a tidal wave of trash.

As of February 17, 2009, the federal government has ordered the shutting down of all U.S. analog television broadcasting signals (a standard since the 1950’s), to be replaced by a digital-only signal.

The necessity of this move is dubious, since both types of signals have been simultaneously broadcast for years. But the impact is clear. Everyone who currently receives a broadcast signal over the airwaves must either buy a new digital High-Definition television (HDTV starts at about $400), or buy a $50 to $70 converter box, for which the government will rebate $40. Otherwise your old analog TV goes black.

The movers and shakers behind this bill are not consumers (who never clamored for HDTV), but the consumer electronics industry, whose sales will be boosted by the law. Conservative commentator George Will calls the bipartisan HDTV legislation “the no couch potato left behind” bill, and sees it as a noxious government entitlement program. Liberals question potentially undemocratic federal plans to sell off valuable analog public airwaves to private telecommunications companies.

However, the biggest loser to the great HDTV switchover could be our environment. Solid waste managers worry that consumers will opt for HDTV en masse, consigning perfectly good analog TVs to the U.S. waste stream. Eighty to 200 million televisions could be discarded over the next thirty months, says John Shegerian, CEO of Electronic Recyclers International, a leading electronics waste recycler. Worse, he says, there’s no federal plan to recycle those sets, even though “almost everything in those TVs could be recycled.”

“With all the new technology that keeps making our existing devices obsolete, we are in the midst of an ongoing tsunami of electronic waste,” says Shegerian. “With February 17, 2009, the federally mandated date for full conversion to

HDTV looming, we can only expect the accumulation of unwanted old electronics to go through the roof.”

The United Nations Environmental Program estimates up to 50 million tons of electronics, called e-waste (TVs, computers, etc.), get trashed annually. That’s 4,000 tons per hour. The bad news: the U.S. properly recycles only 12 percent of its e-waste.

Dumped in a landfill, analog TVs will leach toxins: Picture tubes hold up to eight pounds of toxic lead, while television plastic casings contain cancer-causing flame retardants. Other TV toxins can include cadmium, mercury, chromium, beryllium and arsenic. If not recycled, toxic TVs can poison people, soils and groundwater.

That’s why California banned electronics from landfills in 2006. Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina and six more states followed, while 35 states are considering such laws. However, banning e-waste from U.S. landfills only moves the problem elsewhere.

Most U.S. e-waste gets shipped to India, Southeast Asia, China and Africa, reports Forbes.com. “Workers there, often children making pennies a day, troll mounds of garbage in search of computers and TV’s. Lacking tools to tear open computer shells, they burn the plastic to get to the valuable stuff inside, breathing noxious fumes. They dip circuit boards in acid and melt lead in the same pans they use to cook their meager meals. They toss any remains back on the pile, where toxins seep into water supplies.”

To date, only one TV maker, Sony, boasts a free national electronics recycling program for all its products. Meanwhile the so-called Electronics Manufacturers Coalition for Responsible Recycling, led by Panasonic, Sharp, and Philips, has fought tough “producer responsibility” recycling laws passed in nine states including Texas.

If the industry is serious about taking responsibility, it should lobby as tirelessly as it did for HDTV, backing stalled federal legislation mandating e-waste recycling.

Congress could also ratify the Basel Convention, a treaty banning hazardous waste dumping on developing countries.

Of course we all have an alternative to the expense and hassle of technology upgrades. Forgo the sharper picture and bigger sound of HDTV. Just stop watching television all together. Take a walk. Mean Girls

A car given as a graduation gift was vandalized while parked on B. Wilder Drive.

The victim recently graduated from high school and had been given the car by her grandmother. She told police that the car had been parked in front of her apartment building, and that she was told of the vandalism by a neighbor who called and woke her at 2 a.m.

Nothing was taken from inside the car, but there was extensive damage. When police arrived, they saw that the rear window had been broken out and that there was orange paint splattered along the driver’s side front and rear passenger doors.

An egg had been broken on the rear driver’s side door. There were scratches several inches long along the driver’ side of the car and damage to the rear bumper.

The fender was broken and hanging, and there was a white, powdery substance on the hood of the car. A red brick lay just under the rear of the car and may have

been used to break out the window.

A small amount of the orange paint was on the car parked just in front of the victim’s. The victim’s mother told police none of the damage had been present before the vandalism.

She said her daughter had problems with several other girls during her high school years. The victim said she believed one or two of those girls was responsible for the damage to the car.

• Officers on patrol at Bay and Fahm streets saw a car parked in the right lane of traffic. When the driver saw the police, she put the car in gear and attempted to drive it forward. The siren was sounded and the car stopped.

One of the officers walked up to the driver’s side window to talk to the driver.

A strong odor of marijuana was coming from inside the car.

The driver was advised a traffic stop was being conducted because she was obstructing the flow of traffic in an unsafe manner. She appeared confused and said something was wrong with the car.

When the officer asked why she hadn’t put her hazard lights on, the driver didn’t respond. Her passenger appeared to be very nervous and was tried to avoid eye contact with the officer when he was asked

The officer asked if he could search the man’s person and he said yes.

Before the search could be conducted, the man reached into his pockets. He was advised to stop reaching into his pockets several times.

He continued to reach in his pockets and was pulling items out of his right pocket. The officer opened the passenger door and grabbed the man’s arm, pulled it behind his back and pulled him from the car.

As the officer pulled the man from the car, a blunt fell from his lap as he came out of the vehicle. He was taken to the ground and handcuffed.

The man was arrested, charged with possession of marijuana and obstruction by hindering and taken to jail. The woman was cited for no insurance and obstructing the flow of traffic.

• A pregnant woman told police a man had pointed a hand gun at her after they had a verbal altercation.

The victim said the man is her cousin’s ex-boyfriend. She said he pointed the gun

at her and said, “I’ll wet this whole place up.”

She told the officers she waited 30 minutes to call 911 because she was afraid the man would come back. She said she saw him ride past her residence a short time after the incident. She was advised about warrant procedures.

• A young man left a teen facility and walked to a service station on 37th Street to call his mother for a ride. He said as he stood in front of the store’s door, a second teen grabbed him by the T-shirt and elbowed him in the chest.

The suspect told the victim, “Come on, come on,” and that he “isn’t afraid to go to f--cking jail.” The police came to the scene and the suspect left. When the victim’s mother arrived, she asked that a police report be made.

Who says feminism hasn’t accomplished anything? Nowadays, in most American jurisdictions, both the hooker and the john are committing a crime in the eyes of the law. That may not seem like much of an achievement, but for much of the 20th century prostitution was something only women could get arrested for in the U.S. These laws have since been mostly amended or replaced, so that today, while we may not have equal rights, at least we’ve got equal wrongs. One country, Sweden, has gone to the opposite extreme. There selling your body is legal (the politically correct term is “sex work”), but heaven help the chump who wants to buy.

Though prostitution has never been a high-status occupation, the occasional royal courtesan excepted, for the most part it wasn’t illegal in this country’s early years—though streetwalkers who made themselves conspicuous did risk being charged with vagrancy, public lewdness, or the like. That changed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, an era that saw the criminalization of vices (other examples: gambling, some drugs) that till then had been considered matters for the pulpit, not the courts.

But whereas narcotics laws penalized both sellers and buyers (to be precise, possessors), prostitution laws typically went after just one party in the transaction. Why? Some legal commentators point to a well-known and persistent double standard: whereas men were seen as helpless victims of their libidos, women supposedly had no inherent interest in sex and sold themselves out of sheer wickedness.

It took a long time for that standard to change. As of 1917 only one state, Indiana, had declared that patronizing prostitutes was a crime. (A few others defined prostitution to include both the purchase and sale of sex, although few male buyers were charged.) By 1965 that number had risen to seven. In the 70s several states, including New York

and Massachusetts, enacted antijohn laws, whose goal was to suppress prostitution by embarrassing customers—in 1979 New York City mayor Ed Koch famously read on the radio the names of men convicted of soliciting hookers. I hesitate to attribute this entirely to some newfound sense of fair-mindedness among public officials; clearly the main goal was more effective enforcement.

But at least lawmakers had grasped that the minimum number of participants in a successful act of prostitution was two.

Today antijohn laws are fairly common, but even now the treatment of customers is far from uniform. In a few jurisdictions— Kentucky is one—state law remains focused on those selling sex, leaving it to the discretion of local authorities to criminalize buying it.

Others treat all parties equally. And some punish customers but deal with them more leniently than they do prostitutes, evidently on the same argument used to justify treating drug dealers more harshly than mere users.

As a practical matter there’s no doubt the legal hammer falls more heavily on women, although arrest figures aren’t as lopsided as they used to be. In 1970 close to 80 percent of those arrested for prostitution were female, according to FBI statistics; by 1993 that figure had dropped to 59 percent. As of 2006 it had bounced back up to 64 percent, but the total number of prostitution/vice arrests for both sexes was down significantly.

The law does come down hard, if sporadically, on one male-dominated aspect of the sex trade: pimping, legally known as pandering. The best-known statute along these lines is the 1910 federal Mann Act, formally called the White-Slave Traffic Act, which as written prohibited interstate transportation of women for “prostitution or debauchery, or for any other immoral purpose.”

In fact the Mann Act has often been used to go after plain old johns, albeit famous ones. As noted in an NPR story in the wake of the Eliot Spitzer scandal, targets of Mann Act prosecution—some would say persecution—include Chuck Berry, Charlie Chaplin, the boxer Jack Johnson, and Frank Lloyd Wright.

The law has since been amended to specify that the parties involved must be engaged (or planning to engage) in actual crimes, as opposed to some prosecutor’s notion of immorality.

Which, again, constitutes progress, I suppose.

While Iran’s leaders saber-rattle and quote the Quran, the country’s multitudes of young adults are embracing New Age self-help, as exemplified by the best-selling books and sold-out seminars of motivational guru Alireza Azmandian, according to a June Wall Street Journal dispatch from Tehran. Though young adults in Turkey and Egypt have stepped up their religious fervor, that is not so in Iran. Said a 25-year-old aerospace engineer: “Religion doesn’t offer me answers anymore,” but “(Azmandian’s) seminar changed my life.” The Oprah Winfrey-touted book “The Secret” is in its 10th printing in Farsi; yoga and meditation are big; and advertising abounds on the virtues of feng shui and financial management.

Randall Popkes, 41, and his son Joshua Williams, 22, were arrested in West Des Moines, Iowa, in May and charged with an attempted safecracking at the Des Moines Golf and Country Club. A security officer had noted their license plate as they sped away after a frustrating session in which they had cut into the safe but could not open it. In fact, they had left behind a note for management, according to the Des Moines Register: “(Expletive) you and your safe.”

At press time, a court in Athens, Greece, was considering a challenge brought by three residents of the island of Lesbos in the Aegian Sea to prevent a Greek gay and lesbian organization from referring to homosexual women as lesbians, arguing that such usage insults their heritage, since Lesbos residents have traditionally been called “Lesbians.” On the other hand, Lesbos was also the birthplace of the poet Sappho, a heroic woman among gays and lesbians for her early references to her love of other women.

Update Artist Martin Creed won Britain’s 2001 Turner Prize for his acclaimed installation of a lightbulb going off and on in an otherwise-empty room. His latest exhibition (“Work No. 850”), at the Tate Britain in July, consists of a runner sprinting through one of the galleries every 30 seconds. The museum’s director described Work No. 850 as a “compelling,” “lyrical” piece that “upsets any preconceived ideas” of moving through an art space. Fine Points of the Law The U.S. Supreme Court reaffirmed in June that defendants have a constitutional right to cross-examine witnesses against them and must get a new trial if denied that right. The challenger was Dwayne Giles, who had tried during his trial to keep incriminating statements by his girlfriend out of court, in that she was not available for him to cross-examine. A draft World Bank report reveals that growing crops for biofuels, along with diminished grain supplies, market speculation and export bans, have been responsible for three quarters of the 140 percent rise in food prices over the last six years.

The report’s author, World Bank top agricultural economist Don Mitchell, said the remainder of the increase has been due to a weak U.S. dollar, higher fertilizer costs and soaring energy fees. The report contradicts earlier estimates of biofuel’s effects on food prices that have ranged between 2 and 3 percent claimed by the Bush administration and up to 30 percent calculated by the U.N. Food and Agricultural Organization.

Flat-Screen Warming The gas used in manufacturing liquid crystal display (LCD) flat-screen televisions could cause more global warming than coal-fired power plants, according to a report in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. Nitrogen trifluoride’s climate-warming effect reportedly could be 17,000 times stronger than that of carbon dioxide, and production of the chemical could double to 8,000 tons next year, according to atmospheric chemist and report co-author Michael Prather. The switch to digital television in the U.S. over the next several months is expected to

create a boom in sales of flatscreen televisions, including LCDs. Liquid crystal display sets have often been touted as ecofriendly because they consume less power than plasma or rearprojection sets.

Glacial Breakup Scientists say that the sudden collapse of part of an Argentine glacier for the first time ever in winter is yet another sign of a warming climate. The Perito Moreno glacier, one of the world’s largest, is a popular tourist attraction in the southern Andes.

The prediction that a large chunk may break off at any time has drawn sightseers to Los Glaciares National Park from across Argentina. “This is the first time the glacier has broken up in winter. It could be related to global warming as rising temperatures affect ice friction,” said park director Carlos Corvalan. Large chunks of ice often break off the glacier into Lake Argentina during the southern summer months, but the appearance of a large fissure in mid-winter is unprecedented.

Bertha blew off the west coast of Africa in a pattern more typical of late summer. Some hurricane experts say Bertha’s formation so far east this early in the season, and its explosive growth from a tropical storm into a major hurricane, could foretell a very active hurricane season.

Lava Surge Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano produced a sharp increase in activity that triggered a mild tremor and sent lava shooting 45 feet into the sky. The Hawaiian

Volcano Observatory reports that the tremor registered a magnitude of 3.0, and was followed by the normally incandescent Halemaumau vent going dark for several minutes. A flow of lava has been clearly visible snaking eastward from the crater, while underground tubes have expelled lava into the ocean. Geologists believe the recent breakouts of lava have been due to increased gas pressure in the volcano’s extensive underground lava tube system.

Kilauea has been erupting on and off for 25 years, but more lava than usual is now spewing from the volcano and flowing into the ocean.

James Furshon Amburgey & Hanson

It’s been 36 years since Bobby Hanson and Michael Amburgey first started making music together as a team. Yet it took them 31 years to record and release their first album of acoustic, guitar and harmonica-based roots music.

That record, 2003’s Honky Blues, harkened back to their earliest days in the Savannah music scene, when the duo appeared as The Back Door Men. Says Hanson: “Michael and I were crazy about people like the Rev. Gary Davis, Blind Willie McTell, Leadbelly and others in that style. We found Big Joe Williams more interesting than Rod Stewart.”

The team would later parlay that love of rural blues into stints as members of some of the most popular area boogie, soul and Southern rock acts that ruled regional radio in the ‘70s and ‘80s (such as The Easywalkers and The JoJa Band).

However, Hanson effectively retired in 1982, devoting himself to church music.

It would be years before the harmonica ace blew blues harp again, but when that time came it was with his old, guitar playing associate by his side.

The two men are now releasing their second full-length CD. Entitled Laughin’ When I See You Go, it hews closely to the format of their debut: lighthearted and mostly unadorned acoustic blues and swing. This Saturday, they’ll play a free show at Southside independent music store Silly Mad CDs. Multi-instrumentalist Joe Nelson (who also guests on their album) will accompany them and open. The duo will accept donations to benefit local musicians Jason Statts and David J. Williams, injured in last month’s Ardsley Park shooting.

CD, but he does notice an improvement in recording quality.

“When you record acoustic music like this,” explains the guitarist, “the less you do in the mastering process, the better. Lots of bands compress the signal, but wind up losing something. It’s hard to describe, but this record sounds very much like we do live. It’s a much more natural approach.”

Hanson laments the fact that he and his partner play rarely in public, but says that’s the result of their decision not to gig in bars or restaurants.

“We’d sure like to play more than two or three times a year, but there don’t seem to be a lot of venues without alcohol. It’s not just my church affiliation that keeps us away from that. We’ve done it a lot in the past, and it gets old really quick (laughs)” Amburgey says he’s completely in the dark as far as what the vibe of this free, afternoon all-ages show will be like.

“It’s gonna be fairly informal,” he reckons, “and I guess the mood will be dictated by the crowd — or how big of a crowd there is.”

I inform him that given the type of music they play and the environment (a small, suburban CD store and coffeehouse) I assume there will be stage diving and pyrotechnics. He laughs: “Of course! I’m sure there will be smoke machines as well, plus caviar and champagne backstage!”

2008 event was their biggest ever

The numbers are in, as they say, and it looks like the 2008 Savannah Music Festival was a resounding smash.

According to Executive and Artistic Director Rob Gibson, “Every year we judge our overall success on four criteria, each one of which was fulfilled in 2008: artistic quality, critical acclaim, audience and box office success, and financial results.”

He’s not kidding. Turns out that a full 87 percent of the total number of tickets for the nearly three-week series of ambitious concerts by noteworthy roots and traditional music performers from around the world were sold this past spring, a rather high figure for a festival of this sort.

There’s also much more to celebrate around the festival office, including upcoming radio, CD and internet projects that have the potential to bring the joy of the SMF to untold numbers of people around the world who’d otherwise never be abel to attend in person.

I spoke at length with the SMF’s Communications Manager Ryan McMaken about the recent financial report, and excerpts from our chat are below. Read the entire interview at connectsavannah.com.

This is your fourth straight year with a balanced budget. Is it hard for the SMF not to get cocky?

Ryan McMaken: (Laughs) Well, looking at other music fests, I definitely believe people have struggled with ticket sales this year. There’s a little bit of fear that people will stop buying concert tickets.

Things like that are an added bonus in your life. They’re not essential. We always try and provide a good product.

I don’t think it’s possible to succeed in live entertainment if you just sit back.

Higher transportation costs are cutting into festival attendance.

Ryan McMaken: That’s exactly what they’re saying. With Bonnaroo, their VIP tickets still sell out early, because those for whom money is not really an object can still do what they want. But for destination events like the SMF, it’s getting rough. Thirty-five percent of our 2008 audience were visitors. I think starting next year, we’ll be tapping more into Atlanta, Jacksonville, Charlotte and Charleston.

Your ticket revenue was over $875,000, and 87 percent of possible sales. So you sold almost ninety percent of all seats?

Ryan McMaken: Yes. It’s impressive that American Public Media’s “Performance Today” radio show will again air SMF shows.

Ryan McMaken: That’s been happening for about four years. Rich Mays, our classical recording engineer, does an incredible job, and the Telfair Rotunda —where many of our classical events take place— has great acoustics. Plus, with the festival gaining more cachet each year, it’s mutually beneficial.

How many hours of live stuff is there to draw from for the upcoming NPR series?

Ryan McMaken: We have concerts dating back to 2003, when Rob took over. We have about 20 shows each year from 2004 to 2008. It’s tons of material.

We’ll stream them from our own site and Georgia Public Broadcasting will archive them too. We hope to market it nationwide. It’s a return to radio for Rob. He hosted the Jazz From Lincoln Center series that was heard on about 250 U.S. stations.

Can you imagine the entire SMF selling out?

Ryan McMaken: (Laughs) I think 87 percent is a phenomenal number. It’s a rare thing for a presenting organization to reach that. In 2009, hopefully we’ll get up there in the nineties!

A family affair

You won’t find a family much more dysfunctional than the ones in Crimes of the Heart. Beth Henley’s Pulitzer-Prize winning play opens July 17 at Cardinal Rep and is being directed by Grace Diaz Tootle.

It tells the story of three sisters. “Lenny, the oldest, is paranoid and hyper-emotional and feels like life is falling apart because she’s turning 30,” Tootle says. “Meg is the middle sister, the rebel, who took off and sang the blues and screwed her way through high school.”

Then there’s the youngest, Babe. “She’s been accused and in fact has shot her husband,” Tootle says. “It is a very, very dark comedy. Some people may not find it funny, but that’s the funny of it.

“I would say it’s a poignant story of a family with very dark humor,” she says. “If there is anything in you that is quirky or odd, this is the show for you.”

Lynita Spivey plays Lenny. “She’s the

person who is carrying the most responsibility,” Spivey says. “She feels she’s never really gotten her own break to have her own life.

“She’s a peacemaker and wants to do the right things, but struggles with her own resentment, which gets the better of her sometimes.”

Alison Greer Chodkiewicz plays Meg. She is director of the Little Theatre of Savannah board, and has most recently appeared in Murder Afloat.

Stephanie Selai spent two years studying acting at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City, working towards a BFA in acting. “I’m getting ready to continue at their Los Angeles campus,” she says.

Selai also is Tootle’s daughter. “I grew up with my family in the theater,” she says. “I was always around it, and it wasn’t anything new to me. The person

who gave me the first push was my mom.”

Tootle says this isn’t the first time she’s directed her daughter. “I directed her in Steel Magnolias,” she says. “She came to audition as a surprise to me. She blew me away. Against my instincts, I cast her and she was flawless.”

Crimes of the Heart isn’t a typical play, Selai says. “But it’s a fun show,” she says.

“It’s not something you’d normally see in Savannah, but because it’s a Southern show, it’s something Southerners will

appreciate.”

Mitzi (Lorrie Rumpel) has some bad news for Zeke (Rod McAdams).

The old adage says to write what you know, and playwright Fritz Rumpel has taken it to heart.

His comedy/mystery There’s a Bomb on Trolley 409! takes the audience along on an unusual tour of Savannah. Rumpel worked as a trolley conductor for Old Town Trolley Tours, which sparked his imagination in a humorous way.

“I had a lot of fun writing it,” Rumpel says. “The cast is having a lot of fun with it, too.”

The play will be presented July 18, 19 and 20. Proceeds will benefit the Priceless Gifts Scholarship Campaign, which provides scholarships to needy Tybee residents, so they can enjoy the Y’s programs and services.

“I was sitting on the trolley one day in the spring,” Rumpel says. “I had an idea - ‘How about a mystery play on a trolley?’ - and it kind of took off from there.”

Rumpel says his play is really about the main character, the trolley conductor. “In the few months I drove a trolley, I got a lot of respect for trolley conductors because the job is mentally demanding and physically demanding,” he says. “They must entertain the guests, tell them the history of Savannah, keep them safe and drive, all at the same time, all while the audience is at their backs.”

Not that Zeke, who is played by Rod McAdams, is as admirable as his reallife cohorts. “This particular conductor, everything you could do wrong, he does wrong,” Rumpel says. “He really doesn’t know anything about Savannah. He doesn’t know Monterey Square from Monterey Jack. He throws out a lot of mistakes and mixes up his centuries.

“The other conductor is also the owner, Mitzi, who is also the dispatcher,” he says. “She’s fed up with Zeke, and ready to let him have it.”

The situation changes when Zeke learns that one of his passengers has a bomb. “There are only four passengers onboard,” Rumpel says. “The audience tries to figure out who is the one with the bomb. The reason the bomber is on board has do with a famous historic feud in Savannah. That part is accurate and true, as true as I can make it. It all sort of turns on that.”

During intermission, the audience chooses the mad bomber, so there are four alternate endings. “It could be anyone,” Rumpel says. “At the end of the play, you find out who they all really are.

Zeke is driving through the squares of Savannah. “We don’t have a realistic set,” Rumpel says. “We indicate there are seats, and the trolley driver has a steering wheel. There’s a sign for Hard Hearted Hannah’s Trolley Co. and phony wheels. You hear the sound effects of an old, creaky trolley driving.”

People who have actually taken a tour will especially enjoy the performance, Rumpel says. He hopes that Savannah’s trolley conductors will see the show.

“This is sort of a quirky love letter to the men and women who drive our trolleys,” Rumpel says. “They do work hard. I admired the people I worked with and I think they would enjoy it, especially the explosive conclusion.”

Rumpel’s wife, Lorrie, is co-directing the play and also starring as Mitzi.

Other cast members are Arnie Correa, Jessie Rose Hartz, Valerie Hartz and Will Strong. “I play a person who cares about history and the customers, and who is just determined to succeed against all odds. It’s a David and Goliath situation with her trolley company,” Lorrie says.

“Fritz really brought his experience and his own creativity into it,” Lorrie says. “People who see the play will have great fun. They’ll be able to really relate to Savannah on a very light note, but also underlying is the history, which is very important.”

Hellboy ii: The Golden Army

Cinematic superhero sagas have suddenly become a dime a dozen -- a moviegoer can’t turn around without one swooping down from the multiplex screen -- yet while Hellboy II: The Golden Army is worth more than a plugged nickel, it still ranks among the more disappointing of these countless comic book adaptations that, if nothing else, have given purpose to the lives of fanboys across the country (that purpose, of course, being to bash anyone who doesn’t completely share their views).

That Hellboy II fails to deliver the goods is a real shame: While most of writer-director Guillermo del Toro’s earlier titles have been noteworthy (including The Devil’s Backbone and the underrated Mimic), his Oscar-winning Pan’s Labyrinth suggested that he had firmly entrenched himself in the ranks of the top-tier filmmakers working today (not at the level of Spielberg or Scorsese, of course, but certainly equal to Peter Jackson). Yet while this sequel to the 2004 feature (itself based on Mike Mignola’s comic series) doesn’t lack for visual wonders, it’s utterly clumsy in the storytelling department, a genuine shock given del Toro’s usual ability to spin a tall tale.

Here, Hellboy (Ron Perlman), the satanic emissary who fights on the side of right, must face off against Prince Nuada (Luke Goss), an albinotic, ancient leader who hopes to revive the Golden Army to destroy humankind. The lumbering brutes who comprise the army are pretty cool, though they’re overshadowed by del Toro’s other monstrous creations, including a gigantic plant-man who crashes through the New York streets like a “Go Green” Godzilla and Tinkerbell-sized fairies whose collective

appetite suggests nothing so much as a school of barracudas.

The original Hellboy wasn’t anything special, either, but at least the predicament of its redhued hero carried some dramatic heft, particularly in the way his feeble wisecracks masked the painful ache in his soul, a loneliness that could only be cured by the love of another mutant, the pyrokinetic Liz (Selma Blair). Del Toro miscalculates this time around by moving the pair too quickly to the status of bickering, boring lovers. Their relationship is almost as poorly developed as the budding one between fishman Abe Sapien (returning Doug Jones) and Prince Nuada’s sister, Princess Nuala (Anna Walton).

And it doesn’t help any facet of the film that Nuada and Nuala are drab, lifeless characters whose physical appearance turns them into His and Hers versions of Edgar Winter.

For all its cool critter content -- a mishmash of the Harry Potter adventures, The Neverending Story and del Toro’s own back catalogue -- Hellboy II is surprisingly snooze-inducing when it comes to its storyline and even its central characters. continued on page 28

Ever since the 3D process first appeared in cinema in 1952’s Bwana Devil (advertised with the tagline, “A lion in your lap! A lover in your arms!”), filmmakers have attempted to turn this innovative technique into more than just a fad that appears at regular intervals over the years. 1953’s Vincent Price chiller House of Wax arguably remains the most famous of all three-dimensional efforts (further containing the most iconic of all 3D images, that of the street barker bopping his paddleball right into moviegoers’ faces), though I imagine the 1969 softcore smash The Stewardesses 3D also has its ardent supporters. But poorly produced movies like Jaws 3-D and Friday the 13th Part III did little to advance the cause -- donning the requisite spectacles only resulted in muddy colors bleeding on the screen -- and it wasn’t until last year’s Beowulf that the technology was finally perfected. Seeking to build upon Beowulf ’s breakthrough, Journey to the Center of the Earth takes the 3-D ball and runs with it. In presenting this tale of a scientist (Brendan Fraser) who discovers that Jules Verne’s classic novel is more fact than fiction and subsequently travels beneath the surface with his surly nephew (Josh Hutcherson) and their hottie guide (Anita Briem) in tow, the filmmakers throw everything but a three-dimensional kitchen sink at us: a dinosaur’s snapping jaws, prehistoric piranhas’ pointy teeth, oversized Venus flytraps, bouncing balls, a protruding tape measure, even spittle. It’s all rather nifty, but the problem is that the majority of movie theaters are not showing the picture in 3-D (most multiplexes don’t have the capability yet). And whereas House of Wax and Beowulf remain entertaining yarns when watched in the normal, flat format, this Journey is so insipid that it’d be a chore trying to sit through the simple-minded narrative without the added incentive. As for Fraser’s overacting, he’s such a ham that his eyes pop out of the screen even more menacingly than those sharp dinosaur choppers.

MEET DAVE How many times have we moaned about how “all the best parts were shown in the trailer”? Meet Dave takes the opposite stance: Based on the preview, this vehicle for Eddie Murphy looked as if it would compete with The Love Guru in the sheer awfulness department. And make no mistake: What’s presented is still pretty bad. But compared to Mike Myers’ toxic effort, this almost comes off as Annie Hall by comparison. What the trailer doesn’t convey is that Murphy actually delivers a sharp comic performance as Dave, a human-shaped-and-sized spaceship powered by the tiny aliens within. He also plays the diminutive captain of the spacecraft, but he

isn’t especially memorable in this dry role, spending much of the time alternately wooing a fellow shipmate (Gabrielle Union) and a friendly Earthwoman (Elizabeth Banks, who earlier this year co-starred in the similarly titled Meet Bill), as well as slowly learning that our planet and its inhabitants are capable of offering compassion and beauty and great movies like It’s a Wonderful Life.

It’s Murphy’s work as the walking, talking spaceship that’s inspired, as the character amusingly reacts to the surplus of confusing information flooding his system (as when Banks’ Gina announces that they’re eating meatloaf for dinner and the ship’s computer brings up images of the burly rocker).

Unfortunately, Murphy far outshines the material, which mixes the usual bodilyfunction gags with the usual last-minute sanctimonious pleas for compassion and open-mindedness.

Hancock The idea behind Robert Frost’s soul-stirring poem “The Road Not Taken” can be applied to Hancock, a summer sci-fi outing that, somewhat surprisingly, ends up taking the path “less traveled by.” Yet equally surprising is the fact that this enjoyable film would have been even better had it played out as expected. The premise is irresistible, a counterpoint to all the more seriousminded superhero flicks that have been invading multiplexes in recent years. Hancock (played by Will Smith) is an alcoholic, antisocial superhero whose crimefighting exploits usually end up causing millions of dollars in damage to the city of Los Angeles). The residents have had enough of him, and the police even have a warrant out for his arrest. Hancock couldn’t care less until the day he meets -- and saves the life of -- public relations guy Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman). The sensitive and progressive Ray decides that he’s going to help Hancock overhaul his public image, transforming him from a menace to society into a hero worthy of love and respect. Ray’s wife Mary (Charlize Theron), however, thinks that it’s a waste of time, and that Hancock will never be able to straighten himself out. The first half sprints with this plotline, resulting in a movie that’s consistently funny and inventive. But without warning, scripters Vincent Ngo and Vince Gilligan orchestrate a major plot pirouette, one that dramatically changes the relationships between the characters and allows a sharp satire to mutate into a melodrama, a romance, a tragedy, and a myth-building muddle that might remind some viewers of titles like Highlander or Kate & Leopold.

WALL-E The dialogue of the title robot mostly consists of beeps and chirps and the occasional electronically altered word -- just

get Jim Carrey or Bruce Willis for one day’s work, right? Well, except that even here, Pixar suits followed their own instincts instead of the bottom line. It thrilled me to no end to learn that they settled on Ben Burtt, the multi-Oscar-winning sound designer responsible for creating the creature effects heard in 1977’s Star Wars (yes, including R2-D2). What’s even more gratifying is that Burtt’s shining moment is at the center of a worthy motion picture, a delightful film that so far earns the crown as this summer’s best release. Ultimately WALL-E is about nothing less than one of the tenets of human existence: the need to find a partner with whom to share life’s experiences. Of course, the switch here is that it’s a robot, not a human, who’s in need of companionship. WALL-E is the last of his type, a Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-class robot who rumbles around a deserted Earth collecting and compressing trash. All of the human inhabitants has long since abandoned the polluted planet to take up residence in a gargantuan spaceship (named Axiom) light years away, and what’s left down here is a wasteland seemingly unable to sustain any form of life. For his part, WALL-E carries on his prime directive of cleaning up, yet he’s developed enough human-like traits to know what he likes.

And what he likes is collecting interesting knickknacks (like a Rubik’s cube, a spork and lighters -- lots of lighters) and watching an old videocassette of Hello, Dolly! The musical teaches him about the concept of love, so when a sleek robot named EVE (Extra-terrestrial Vegetation Evaluator) is dropped off on the planet to search for signs that it might be inhabitable again, WALL-E pursues her. Initially, EVE is allbusiness, but she eventually warms to his considerable charms, and once she’s ferried back to Axiom, our intrepid little Romeo determines not to let her get away.

Get Smart Get Smart, the now-cult TV sitcom that aired from 1965 to 1970, was created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, and these legendary funnymen are listed in the credits of the new motion picture spinoff Get Smart as “creative consultants.” The word is that neither of them actually had any input in what turns up on the screen, which probably explains why major facets of this motion picture differ from what fans fondly recall about the show. But in at least one respect, there’s a striking similarity: Both have no problem providing the laughs. This new version does away with the Cold War backdrop. Instead, the well-worn plot finds K.A.O.S. head Siegfried (Terence Stamp, taking over Bernie Kopell’s role from the series) threatening to destroy the world unless he gets paid a substantial sum, and the movie seems as much a Bond spoof as a Get Smart homage. If I had ever entertained the notion that Mike Myers would make another movie as awful as The Cat In the Hat, I might have opted for early retirement. Yet here comes The Love Guru. Myers, who also co-wrote (with Graham Gordy) what we’ll loosely refer to as the screenplay, stars as Guru Pitka, an American-born, Indian-raised spiritual leader who’s miffed that he places second to Deepak Chopra when it comes to the popularity of selfhelp gurus. As children, both Pitka and Chopra were taught by -- say it fast to get the “joke” -- Guru Tugginmypudha, who trains his young charges by urinating in a bucket and then making his pupils fight each other with piss-saturated mops.

Tugginmypudha is played by none other than Ben Kingsley, who 25 years ago won an Oscar for playing Mahatma Gandhi.

Pitka is given a golden opportunity to pass Chopra in mass appeal when he’s hired by Toronto Maple Leafs owner Jane Bullard (Jessica Alba, and you know you’re in trouble when she’s one of the more tolerable aspects of a movie) to patch matters up between the hockey team’s star player, Darren Roanoke (Romany Malco), and his estranged wife Prudence (Meagan Good), who lately has been stepping out with the enormously endowed Los Angeles Kings goalie Jacques “Le Coq” Grande (Justin Timberlake). And yes, every time Le Coq pulls out le cock, we predictably hear a thud as it hits the floor.

WANTED Based on the graphic novel series, Wanted initially feels like an unofficial remake of Fight Club, as cubicle nobody Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy, speaking of Atonement) narrates how he’s been beaten down by his mundane, miserable existence (cheating girlfriend, obnoxious boss, dead-end job). Into his life walks not Tyler Durden but Fox (Angelina Jolie), a tattooed beauty who insists that he’s been targeted for elimination by the same man (Thomas Kretschmann) who recently killed his father. Fox soon introduces Wesley to The Fraternity, a clandestine outfit led by the cordial Sloan (Morgan Freeman). Shucking aside any moral qualms, Wesley joins the group, in the process learning that he possesses untapped skills that make him a natural for this line of work. Russian director

You Don’t Mess With the Zohan

KUNG FU PANDA It isn’t obnoxious. It isn’t without heart or soul. It isn’t packed to the rafters with potty humor. In short, it isn’t like the majority of today’s non-Pixar animated features. It’s important not to oversell the picture, because it’s still a formulaic family film featuring the usual type of underachiever who invariably headlines toon romps of this nature. But in other ways, it’s a delight, wrapping its familiar messages of acceptance and self-confidence in the middle of a provocative visual scheme. Jack Black employs his patented shtick as an overweight panda who longs to become a martial arts expert, but it suits this story just fine. As the vicious snow leopard who seeks to claim the high-and-mighty title of Dragon Warrior, Deadwood’s Ian McShane effectively provides guttural menace. And while the actors who provide the voices for the legendary martial arts outfit The Furious Five aren’t given enough to do (Angelina Jolie, Seth Rogen, David Cross, Lucy Liu and poor Jackie Chan are the victims), all is forgiven whenever Master Shifu appears on screen. It’s a sizable part, meaning that we’re constantly treated to Dustin Hoffman’s quirky take on the role of a diminutive red panda who serves as mentor to the other animals.

It was Mae West who famously quipped (in 1933’s I’m No Angel), “When I’m good, I’m very, very good, but when I’m bad, I’m better.” You Don’t Mess With the Zohan inspires a bastardization of that quote: When it’s funny, it’s very, very funny, but when it’s bad, it’s downright awful. That’s a shame, because choice moments suggest that this could have been Adam Sandler’s best comedy -- not a Herculean feat, by any means, but after a career littered by the likes of Big Daddy, Little Nicky and the dismal remake of The Longest Yard, we’ll take what we can get. Penning the script with Robert Smigel and omniscient “It” guy Judd Apatow, Sandler, whose newly buff frame and stylish facial hair prove to be a good look for him, plays Zohan, an Israeli antiterrorist agent who tires of his violent lot in life. While battling his arch-nemesis, the Palestinian warrior The Phantom (John Turturro), Zohan fakes his own death and moves to New York to pursue his dream of becoming a hair stylist.
