Saturday gives kids the opportunity to take part in Georgia Archaeology Month.

In the old days Savannah was deadsville in the summer, and we almost had to struggle to find enough stuff to write about to fill the paper. With the exponential growth of the area, those days are long gone. But we still get a little breather. Emphasis on “little.”

Landlord ordinance gets first reading by linda sickler | linda@connectsavannah.com

An ordinance meant to address derelict rental properties, believed to be a source of neighborhood blight, got its first reading at the May 21 meeting of the Savannah City Council.

Council members have called for strong city action that would compel the owners or operators of rental property to keep their properties maintained. That means keeping them in compliance with housing and property maintenance codes.

The ordinance was put together

by City Attorney James Blackburn.

Prior to the meeting, some aldermen expressed concern that the ordinance wasn’t strong enough and wouldn’t stand up in court.

Under the ordinance, a property could be considered derelict if it has property maintenance violations, criminal activity or cut-offs of utility services, including electricity, water and sewer, for more than 60 consecutive days. While the ordinance acknowledges that property owners do have certain rights, it says those rights don’t supersede the obligation to keep the property free of health and safety violations.

After several violations, property owners could be put on “probation.” They also would be fined $100 per rental unit for each month the property remains derelict.

Owners would be required to provide ongoing inspection reports to the city to prove it is no longer derelict. A property that remains derelict for more than 60 days or has been considered derelict two or more times during a two-year period would be deemed chronically derelict rental property, Then, owners would have to pay a $50 per month fee per unit for 36 months, even after the violations have been corrected. They also would have to provide inspection reports and verify the property is in compliance with codes for that three-year period.

In other action, the council: • Approved the purchase of a tract of land in the Hudson Hill neighborhood that would be used for housing development in West Savannah. About $202,000 of the city’s revolving property acquisition fund will be used, $2,000 of which would go towards closing costs.

In other news, I wanted to direct your attention to the Psychotronic Film Series screening of Control on Wednesday, June 4, at two times that evening. I saw the film, chronicling the short career of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis, at last year’s Savannah Film Festival, and was struck by the stark beauty of its black and white cinematography and the strength of its performances. Go see it!

The Chatham County/City of Savannah Land Bank Authority had requested that the city provide the money in the form of a repayable grant. The 2.65-acre property is located just north of W. Bay Street with frontage on Hudson and Graham streets.

From 19 to 21 new infill houses would be constructed on the site. Similar houses have been constructed in West Savannah, including some that can be seen across from the Moses Jackson Community Center.

The grant would be repaid to the city as the lots are sold.

Environmental site assessments were conducted and indicate the property is suitable for residential development.

The project is part of the city’s effort to revitalize West Savannah and provide affordable singlefamily, detached housing. It also is designed to prevent encroachment of the Bay Street commercial district into the Hudson Hill neighborhood, which consists of predominantly single-family housing. In fact, a stockade fence will be built along the southern boundary of the property to help screen Bay Street from the new housing development.

• The council approved a 60-day continuance to allow the Coastal Heritage Society to purchase two endangered historically significant houses. On Feb. 14, the CHS requested a 90-day continuance to appeal a decision by the Historic Review Board that would have allowed the owner of the houses to demolish them. .

The houses, which are located near the Roundhouse Railroad Museum, are considered historic because they were built to house railroad workers at the historic rail yard. The houses are located onnnn Purse and Jones street.

The CHS is buying the houses so they can be preserved. The property owner has agreed to sell two parcels along with the houses.

While the terms of the purchase have been reached, more time is needed to finalize the transaction, so the extension was approved.

• The council approved the placement of a historical marker in front of the Beach Institute at 502 E. Harris St., which was the first school in Savannah built specifically to educate AfricanAmericans. Land for the school was purchased by the Freemen’s Bureau, American Missionary Society and the Savannah Educational Association.

Newly freed slaves built the school and a teacher’s house at the site shortly after the end of the Civil War. The school was named for Alfred E. Beach, a philanthropist, inventor and editor of the Scientific American, who gave money for the construction of the school. Today, the building is an educational and cultural center operated by the King-Tisdell Cottage Foundation.

• The council approved the one-time purchase of night vision goggles and accessories from U.S. Night Vision Corp. at a cost of $76,600. The goggles will be used by the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department Special Operations Division.

Organizers of the event think interest in the fictitious archaeologist will spark renewed interest in archaeology.

Georgia Archaeology Month is celebrated in May, and this year’s theme focuses on the Spanish Period in Georgia. The Coastal Heritage Society will celebrate with the return of ArchaeoFest, set for May 31 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Battlefield Park, located

CHS archaeologist Rita Elliott is the event’s organizer. “We have two new activities this year,� she says. “One is an addition to the culture tent. Last year, we had all

sorts of really cool pictures of things from different cultures. This year, we’re adding spices from around the world. It will be more interactive and will ask everyone to use their sense of smell to guess what country the spice came from.�

Also new this year is an activity called Digtective. “They don’t actually get to dig -- it will be more like CSI,� Elliott says. “They’ll have to use clues from the site and lab to figure out what the artifacts are.�

One of Elliott’s goals is to focus on archaeological activities other than digging. “It’s important to note that digging is just the tip of the iceberg. Archaeologists study soil samples, plants, and do a whole range of things in the lab, trying to extract information about the artifacts.�

It might seem that ArchaeoFest is geared towards children, but Elliott says the event is designed for people of all ages. “We’re trying to focus on activities, hands-on things, that encourage inter-generational learning. Children can do these things, but the caregivers with them are also engaged.�

Elliott says Georgia Archaeology Month provides a valuable opportunity. “We see so much about archaeology, but a lot of it is Indiana Jones and the Hollywood version,� she says. “If we’re able to educate the public about what archaeology really is, people will recognize the importance of archaeological sites. If people recognize their importance, we’re one step closer to

preserving them.�

Development is the biggest threat. “We have a wonderful range of archaeological sites in Georgia from 12,000 B.C. all the way to 50 years ago,� Elliott says. “There are Native American, African American, rural, domestic, a whole range.

There are about 50,000 sites in Georgia,� she says. “Because we have such a wealth in numbers and diversity, as development increases, more sites are being impacted and destroyed than ever before. Wise stewardship of archaeological sites doesn’t have to mean no development. It means we study first, then let the development proceed.�

Jocelyn Xamis, CHS director of special events and projects, says the variety of events will intrigue everyone. “Parents can really get into this. They even have one exhibit about what garbage tells archaeologists.�

Archaeologists will be on hand to answer questions. “This is something the public should be aware of,� Xamis says. “There aren’t a lot of Revolutionary War sites, and we’re lucky to find these artifacts here and document them.�

Movie movement Late last week, as the long Memorial Day weekend beckoned with its seductive twofold promise of an extra unscheduled day plus the unofficial start of summer, a neighbor and I considered a movie as one way to enjoy the extra free time.

By chance we’d discovered that Young @ Heart was playing at a movieplex in Hinesville, and made tentative plans to see this recently-released documentary about a senior citizens chorale that performs arrangements of 60’s and 70’s rock songs. The film’s reviews have been favorable, and I’m told that the chorus has been featured on the Tonight Show.

Either the online movie schedules were in error or we found out about the movie too late. By Friday, all traces of Young @ Heart had vanished from southeast Georgia.

Although the idea of Robert Downey, Jr. as a superhero is a mindbender, I am looking forward to seeing Iron Man, my second choice for a movie outing.

Working this major studio release into

my schedule should be no problem since at press time it was playing in three of the six theaters in town.

The Savannah metro area seems to have an ideal collection of ingredients to support a varied menu of film options.

Earlier this month, the Cindigenous Film Event was standing-room-only at the 220-seat Jepson Center auditorium for the screening of four locally produced short films. Each fall, the Savannah Film Festival fills the Trustees and Lucas Theaters day and night for a week and a half, screening dozens of foreign films, documentaries, soon-to-be-released feature films and student films. At the 2007 festival, we were privileged to see The Kite Runner even as controversy was swirling around the film at the national level, delaying its official release.

These days, not one, not two, but three locally-based independent film organizations work throughout the year to bring us films that have passed by our community. This year, films like the documentary King Corn, sponsored by Reel Savannah, and the Academy Award-nominated I’m Not There, sponsored by Psychotronic Film Society, have blown through town

for one-night-only, blink-and-you’ll-missit screenings.

In June, these two groups, plus the Savannah Film Society, will be at it again, bringing three well-respected and diverse films to town for the cinematically-starved among us.

My Name Is Albert Ayer will screen at the Jepson on June 5, marking the first time the Psychotronic Film Society has partnered with this venue. The late jazz musician Albert Ayer was “not very well known except in very esoteric jazz circles” says Jim Reed, the man behind the Psychotronic series (as well as Connect music editor). “His music was rooted in his very personal spiritual beliefs. He looked at music not so much as a commercial vocation but as more of a higher calling.”

Reed hopes that this film will launch a partnership between Psychotronic and the Jepson to screen “critically acclaimed documentaries about some form of contemporary art, whether it’s film or music or painting.”

For film watchers yearning for nostalgia, the Savannah Film Society kicks off their summer series of previously-run movies with Sabrina (the 1954 Audrey Hepburn

version) on June 14 at the Lucas.

The next night, across town at Victory Square, Reel Savannah will screen The Counterfeiters, which won the Academy Award this year for Best Foreign Film.

These volunteer-run entities are working to fill in the local void of movie-going opportunities, but that status, plus the financial realities of finding places to screen films, results in these movie screenings occurring on a one-time-only basis. If your brother’s bachelor party is the same night as one of these events, well, too bad.

With such a large community of musicians, writers, artist and filmmakers in Savannah, as well as an expanding local cadre of patrons of all ages and tastes, the continuing existence of this gap in our local filmgoing options is not only disappointing, but embarrassing. How else to describe a so-called cultural Mecca that has to solicit private donations to support the screening of a film featuring major motion picture stars and nominated for an Academy Award?

Here’s hoping that national cineplex owners will give Savannah a more eclectic menu of films in the near future.

The Flannery O’Connor Childhood Home Foundation is elevating its programming with a new lecture series.

Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Michael Cunningham will appear on Tuesday, June 3 at Trinity Church as the first annual speaker sponsored by the O’Connor Foundation’s Ashley and Terry Usrey Memorial Lecture Series.

Cunningham’s novel The Hours won the 1999 Pulitzer Prize and the PEN/Faulkner Award, and was adapted into a critically-acclaimed film starring Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman.

Other Cunningham books include Flesh and Blood, Specimen Days, and A Home at the End of the World, which was also made into a movie.

The decision to invite Cunningham as the first speaker for the series was influenced by Cunningham’s reputation as an admirer of Flannery O’Connor, who lived in Savannah as a child and died in 1964 at age 39.

“A number of years ago there was a Publisher’s Weekly piece about Cunningham,” says Bill Dawers, president of the O’Connor Foundation board. “He had some Flannery O’Connor quotes on his chalkboard when the reporter came by.” In a recently published book about faith, Cunningham “specifically brought up O’Connor in the book,” says Dawers.

He notes thematic and stylistic similarities between Cunningham and O’Connor. “With his portrayal of Virginia Wolff in The Hours, Cunningham frequently has these shifting points

of view. He writes equally well about men and women, probably better about women. His first novel [A Home at the End of the World] has some amazing perspectives of the child, something that O’Connor did all the time. There was something really fitting about the combination.”

“Then throw into the mix the fact that he won the Pulitzer Prize and two of his books have been turned into highly acclaimed films,” says Dawers.

The Ursrey Lecture Series, underwriter for Cunningham’s appearance, was established earlier this year by Perry, Georgia resident Alene Ursrey in memory of her sons Ashley and Terry.

The funders describe the brothers as “native Georgians who, like Flannery O’Connor, were lifelong devotees to all things Southern, particularly the art of storytelling.”

Terry Ursrey, who died in 2006, had many friends in Savannah, often traveling to the area for stays at his family’s Tybee Island cottage and as a sales rep working in the publishing industry.

“Terry was such a southern character, he almost stepped out of Flannery’s books,” says Betsy Cain, a friend of Terry Ursrey’s who, along with Dr. John Hunt, helped broker the partnership between the Ursrey family and the O’Connor Foundation. “What an amazing coup to get Michael Cunningham for this first lecture.”

Both Cain and Dawers describe the Ursrey Lecture as building on the momentum of the Savannah Book Festival and other literary events in the area.

“If we can keep repeating that in a stimulating way with different kinds of authors, that’s what we’re after,” says Cain.

“We really want the O’Connor Childhood Home to become a literary center,” says Dawers. “We’re hoping that the cachet of Flannery O’Connor and Savannah would put us in a position to attract some ‘literary stars.’

Police were called to 67th and Waters on the report of a flasher.

One woman said she was at the bus stop and the suspect kept asking her about the date. She tried to ignore the man, but when she finally looked at him, she saw that he had his penis out of his pants and was playing with it.

The woman left the bus stop to go to a nearby restaurant to call for help. She said the man followed her and when she turned around to confront him, he was still jerking his penis.

A second woman pulled up in her car and let the first woman get in so she could get away from the man. She told police she saw the victim trying to get away from the suspect, who she confirmed was jerking and shaking his penis.

When police arrived and asked the man about the incident, he claimed he just wanted to kill himself. He was charged with indecent exposure.

• A woman was charged with driving without a license and obstruction of justice after an officer witnessed her car passing another vehicle on Staley Avenue in an area with a double yellow line on the roadway, meaning no one can pass.

As the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, the woman passed a second car, again in an area with double yellow lines.

The woman told the officer that her son had just been hit by a car and she was trying to get home to check on him.

The officer told the woman no calls had come in about anyone getting hit by a car. The officer asked the woman for her driver’s license, but she said she didn’t have one. The woman was then asked for her name and date of birth. She gave a name and date of birth, but didn’t know her Social Security number. The information was returned as not being on file. The woman was asked several more times for her name and date of birth, and each time she gave the same false name and date of birth.

The vehicle came back as a rental car.

The woman was arrested.

The man walked through the house to see if anyone was still there. The suspect or suspects had been in every room of the house but two.

The dresser drawers had been pulled out in two of the bedrooms and the mattresses were off the beds.

Clothes had been thrown on the floor is one of the bedrooms, and the jewelry boxes had been searched and the jewelry thrown around the room.

The man said he didn’t know if anything was missing. He said his wife was at work and would look through the jewelry when she got home.

The thieves apparently gained entry through the side door or back glass-sliding doors, which were unlocked. The man said he didn’t want forensics to come in and process the house, unless his wife disagreed with him and wanted fingerprinting done.

• A Southside resident told police that everything in his house was in order when he left for work at 8:30 a.m., but said when he returned home, he noticed someone had been in the house.

• A man was seen turning north onto White Bluff Road from Abercorn Street.

An officer watched as the man cut off two vehicles while driving at a high rate of speed and changing lanes without a turn

signal.

The officer got behind the man’s vehicle at Echols Street. By the time the driver reached Eisenhower Drive, he was traveling at speeds in excess of 80 miles per hour.

The officer waited until there were no more vehicles around the suspect’s car to activate his emergency equipment. The man stopped three blocks later on Hampton Street.

Before the officer could ask the man for his driver’s license, the man exited the vehicle, unsteady on his feet and having difficulty standing. The officer asked the man why he was driving so fast, and he replied he was trying to get home.

While talking to the man, the officer smelled a strong odor of alcohol coming from his person and noticed that his speech was severely slurred. The man refused to submit to a breath test and was arrested.

the straight dope Long ago you determined that it still cost less than a penny to mint a penny. It’s a far different world today, and I find it hard to believe that the cost of minting a penny is less than the face value.

Dear Cecil: I thought I was smart and all until my son asked me, “Why doesn’t wood melt?”

—Murli The simple answer is that wood doesn’t melt because it burns first. If that seems a little like giving your son the brushoff, we can go into some more detail.

Typically substances go through two phase transitions as they’re heated up: solids melt into liquids, liquids boil into gases. There are plenty of exceptions, though, and in some cases a chemical reaction transpires before the phase transition can take place. Here the reaction we’re talking about is combustion: anything with a combustion temperature lower than its melting temperature will burst into flames before it starts getting gooey.

So say you’re heating up a hunk of wood. Up through 500 degrees Fahrenheit or so, mostly what you’re doing is driving off moisture. As the temperature increases, though, the wood starts to break down chemically, liberating the lighter organic compounds (methane, methanol, etc) into the surrounding air in a process called devolatilization.

Somewhere north of 1,000 degrees these compounds start to burn, and the resulting heat will ignite the final, least volatile portion of the wood: the stuff, largely carbon, that combustion pros refer to as char. After the char burns, what’s left is the ash, which consists of wood’s inorganic components—most often calcium, potassium, and magnesium compounds. And these minerals will in fact melt, usually at between 1,900 and 2,200 degrees. My assistant Una reports seeing huge wood-fired industrial furnaces where the molten ash runs down the walls like honey.

OK, someone pipes up from the back, but what if you heated the wood in a vacuum, so it couldn’t burn? Sigh.

Well, the water and volatile matter would evaporate in the early going, leaving behind char. The inorganic stuff would then melt as described above, and finally, if you cranked the temperature up to 6,400 degrees, the carbon itself would liquefy—which is as close to melting wood as you’re going to get.

No flies on you, Westerr. It’s true that as of 1998, when last we discussed this topic, minting pennies wasn’t a losing proposition. Each one then cost about four-fifths of a cent to manufacture, giving them a low but still positive profit margin—or seigniorage, as it’s known in the currency biz—of 20 percent. But that was then. Stamping out a one-cent piece now costs about 1.25 cents. Given pennies’ vestigial role in the economy, the government’s insistence on minting them has gone from pointless atavism to expensive hobby.

What happened? Well, copper’s gotten a lot pricier in the intervening decade—75 cents a pound on the London Exchange in ’98, $3.84 as of deadline—but a penny is only 2.5 percent copper. The rest is zinc, and thanks to greatly increased demand from China, that’s been in short supply for a while now, sending the price up from 47 cents a pound to as much as $1.50.

Zinc production is catching up, creating some relief, but it’s doubtful that making a zinc-copper penny will ever cost less than a penny again.

And the penny’s not even the big problem. The reigning negative-seigniorage champ is the humble nickel, which now has an extravagant price tag of about 7.7 cents. Nickels are 25 percent nickel and 75 percent copper, so here we’re dealing with the big price hike for copper plus a similar one for nickel: $2.10 a pound ten years back, $11.92 now. As demand for nickel has gone way up (China again being a major consumer), America has stopped supplying it: we had no nickel mines in operation last year, and we sold off the last of our strategic reserves in 1999.

Concerned about coins disappearing from circulation, the mint introduced a regulation last year levying a $10,000 fine against anyone who melts down pennies or nickels for the metal. Great, but they’ll have to catch a lot of melters to put a dent in the many millions we’re losing annually by making the coins at all. Amid general resignation that neither the penny nor the nickel is going away anytime soon, the House just passed a bill requiring that henceforth both be made from less-expensive steel.

The Treasury Department opposes it, but something’s gotta give.

A provision in Switzerland’s constitution recognizes the “dignity” of “animals, plants and other organisms,” and a federal Ethics Committee on Non-Human Gene Technology declared in an April report that vegetation has “inherent worth” and that humans cannot exercise “absolute ownership” over it but must treat it morally, measured case-by-case. For example, the committee said a farmer’s mowing his field is acceptable, but not the arbitrary severing of a wildflower’s bloom. The committee would permit genetic engineering, since plants would still retain the “autonomy” to reproduce on their own.

Angelique Vandeberg, 28, was arrested in May in Sheboygan, Wis., and charged with felony child abuse after her 8-yearold daughter reported that Vandeberg had intentionally shot her in the leg with a BB gun, leaving her unable to walk without difficulty, in order to win a $1 bet with her boyfriend. (Police said alcohol was involved.)

After officials in Batu, a tourist town in East Java in Indonesia, asked its massage parlors to make clear to customers that they are not houses of prostitution, one parlor owner created uniform pants for his women with a padlockable zipper, and “locks in” each masseuse in front of the client at the beginning of a session.

Other parlor owners have followed along.

A local women’s group representative complained that it is the customers, not the women, who need restraining.

(2) Justin MacGilfrey, 19, was arrested in February for the attempted robbery of a Circle K convenience store in Daytona Beach, Fla. earthweek Biofuel Invasion The rush to plant crops for biofuel production threatens to spread invasive plant species that could unleash environmental and economic havoc, according to a new report. The Kenya-based Global Invasive Species Program (GISP) warns in the report Biofuel Crops and Non-Native Species: Mitigating the Risk of Invasion, that some plants being brought into unique ecosystems can overwhelm native species, threatening the livelihoods and health of those living nearby.

GISP points to the increasing use of the giant reed Arundo donax, which can soak up 500 gallons of water per square yard during its growing period, causing ecological stress in dry regions. The plant is also naturally flammable and increases the possibility of wildfires. Brazil’s use of the African oil palm for biodiesel production has turned areas of forest with mixed biodiversity into a homogenous layer of palm trees, the report says.

Humpbacks Rebound A new report by the U.S. environmental agency NOAA says that the number of humpback whales in the North Pacific has increased steadily since international and federal protections were enacted during the 1960s and ’70s. The number of the endangered marine mammals in the North Pacific has increased from less than 1,500 in 1966 to between 18,000 and 20,000 today.

But some isolated populations of humpbacks, especially those in the Western Pacific, have not recovered and still suffer low numbers. Japan canceled plans to slaughter a group of humpbacks during its whaling expedition to Antarctic waters earlier this year after the move sparked international public outrage.

Ash Hazard Environmental scientists in Chile and Argentina are becoming concerned over the long-term damage to the health of people and animals in ash-blanketed parts of picturesque Patagonia. Manmade Extinctions Human activities are causing the most rapid decline in species since the extinction of the dinosaurs, according to a new report issued by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). A census of wildlife conducted by the environmental group reveals that humans have eliminated about 1 percent of all animal species each year, causing one in four species to disappear over the past 35 years. Yellow Sky of Earth A climate change activist who was voted “Australian of the Year� in 2007 has proposed a radical scheme to reverse global warming by injecting an element into the

atmosphere that would change the color of Earth’s normally blue sky.

Tim Flannery of Macquarie University made the proposal at a sustainability conference in Canberra. He advocates a process called “solar dimming� in which vast amounts of sulfur would be injected into the atmosphere to repel the sun’s rays. Flannery says the most cost-effective way to deliver the sulfur into the atmosphere would be to add the element to jet fuel. “Everything’s going in the wrong direction at the moment, timelines are getting shorter, the amount of pollution in the atmosphere is growing,� he said. For the past several years, guessing the headlining act at SCAD’s annual free graduation concert in Forsyth Park has become something of a pastime for avid area music fans. Partially because the college usually can be counted on to hire big-name acts with cross-generational appeal, and partially because the powers-that-be decided from the start of this most welcome tradition that —in keeping with their almost legendary privacy fetish— they’d refuse to publicly confirm the artists’ names, keeping the whole thing a surprise right up until they took the stage.

Well, given the information-driven age we live in, it’s nigh on impossible to keep that sort of cat in the bag. So, folks have been scouring the internet for weeks now, checking everyone’s tour schedules in hopes they’d stumble upon the secret star. By now, most readers will likely have heard it’s this triple-bill of contemporary female modern pop acts — which is, by leaps and bounds, the most youth oriented (and frankly, lily-white) show SCAD has to date provided as a sendoff to its senior class.

I’m not going to pretend there isn’t a lot of head-scratching and outright grumbling going on in various corners of the community over this year’s selection. Plenty of folks see this as not only a noticeable drop in quality from years past when the featured attractions included such legends as James Brown, George Clinton, Ziggy Marley and The Neville Brothers, not to mention lesser acclaimed acts Blues Traveler and The North Mississippi All-Stars.

One thread running through most (if not all) of those choices was a sense of artistic heft, or at least an existing legacy of some sort — neither of which, sad to say, any of the popular and/or chart-topping names on this bill can lay much claim to.

Also, with the possible exception of Blues Traveler (which drew a more stereotypical frat-boy crowd than an art school audience), prior graduation show acts were immensely well-received within our black community. That contributed to what some of us found so heartening about these Forsyth Park shows: namely, they drew a very

diverse crowd to the park, in terms of gender, race and age.

It is highly unlikely this show (inherently geared more to white high school kids than SCAD students or most anyone over 28) will bring people together in that way, and so, some will call this a misstep.

However, as someone who knows a bit about booking concerts, take it from me: finding nationally-known artists of a certain stature who are A) within your budget, and B) willing (and logistically able) to play an outdoor show in this market on a very specific day and time, is incredibly difficult. It’s a wonder these shows happen at all, considering the fretting, headaches, negotiating, and crossed fingers that surely go into lining up the talent, erecting the stage, taking care of hospitality and accommodations, etc...

Most people in this area know of the Oatland Island Wildlife Center as that secluded area about five miles east of downtown that’s home to a wide variety of wild animals in their natural habitats.

According to Shannon Scott, there’s plenty more to discover on the grounds of this environmental education center run by the local Board of Education.

Like restless spirits, for instance.

Scott, who operates Sixth Sense Savannah —a popular walking tour company which specializes in recounting local tales of the paranormal and supernatural— forged an exclusive agreement with the management of Oatland Island a few months back.

That open-ended contract allows Scott and his staff to conduct “expeditions” on the Center’s grounds after normal operating hours.

These expeditions are geared toward both history buffs and “ghost hunters” who —like Scott— see in this mysterious location a wealth of opportunities for up close and personal encounters with real (if not live) spectres. Scott says that over the course of months of research, he has uncovered no small amount of anecdotal evidence suggesting Oatland’s main administrative building has enjoyed

more than its fair share of odd and occasionally frightening “poltergeist moments”.

With a true believer’s zeal and the flair of a professional storyteller, he’s happy to compile those old, spinetingling tales —and, possibly, fresh ones— and employ them as a springboard to spur interest in one of the region’s most under-utilized and overlooked educational attractions.

“This is a lovely gem of an institution,” enthuses Scott. “Yet for sitting so close to the Historic District and Tybee Island, it has for too long remained in a kind of cultural blindspot. It’s overgrown, unkempt and extremely rustic. With the many surrounding buildings, it actually feels more like a mad scientist’s back yard — which isn’t far off the mark, considering it’s amazing history as a research facility.”

According to Scott, the main building, which now houses offices, conference rooms and exhibits, once served as a precursor to Atlanta’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In fact, much of the research into modern mosquito control was developed on its premises. He also notes another little-known fact: that “the formula for Hartz’s flea collars was ‘ac-

cidentally’ developed there.”

Yet it’s the main building’s earliest incarnations that fuel the majority of speculation into its connection to the “other side”.

Built in 1927 as a retirement home for railway workers, it saw dozens of aging train men spend their final years inside its walls.

“If you really open your mind to all that Oatland has been, such things begin to seep into your being,” Scott says. “You realize so much joy, sadness, hope, life and death coursed through the land and the hallways there. This venture is about revealing all of these.”

Also key is the later period in which the facility served as a research hospital specializing in women and children who suffered from venereal disease — many of whom were in advanced, untreatable stages.

“We’re still looking into the extent of that particular chapter,” Scott admits, “so it’s difficult to say just what went on.”

In the end, though, it may simply be the mood of the place after dark which provides the most convincing argument for Oatland Island as being a hotbed of supernatural activity. “It’s basically thousands and thousands of square feet of ‘creepy’,” Scott chuckles.

“This place is perfectly removed and lends itself ideally to ghost hunting.”

Over the past few months, Scott’s company has held nine two-hour long excursions, each one filled to capacity at 35 attendees. By now, many readers may be asking themselves if the whole notion of traipsing around a wildlife preserve telling creepy stories isn’t on some level a bit unseemly.

Those readers may be pleased to know that Chris Gentile, the current Director of Oatland Island wholeheartedly endorses this venture.

“Initially,” says Gentile, “when I heard the name Haunted Oatland, I thought it might not be exactly what we were going for, but once I realized Shannon was interested in promoting the history of the place as opposed to the idea of ghosts jumping out and scaring people, I saw it as an opportunity for folks to see this wonderful facility in a different light. This place has such a rich history before it became what it is now, and this allowed learning about that history to be fun and interesting.

“Shannon and his team have been very responsible, and if there’s ever anything that strikes us as verging on cheesy, they’re quick to change it. His tours contain an element of science as well, so it’s not all about ghosts.”

Twenty percent of the profits from these tours is donated back to Oatland Island to further their own educational programs, and everyone who takes his tour receives a pass that allows them to return to the facility during daytime hours.

So far, Gentile says over fifty percent of Scott’s guests have taken advantage of this offer, resulting in large numbers of brand-new visitors who’d likely never have come to Oatland were it not for this tour.

“This is definitely a prideful pet project, but just you watch,” says Scott. “In a year’s time it will be widely known as a ‘buzz destination’ and the hottest thing to do here at night that doesn’t involve something depraved. (laughs) My greatest satisfaction, though, is knowing I’m helping to keep this great place with a troubled past in business.”

On Tuesday, May 20, we held our annual Best of Savannah awards ceremony at the Wild Wing Cafe, with live entertainment by the outstanding local band Bottles and Cans (lower left corner of the page). As usual we twisted the winners’ arms to come up and make an acceptance speech (though clearly some people’s arms didn’t really need twisting). Here are a few snapshots of some of the winners.

Leap of faith

ured I was doing something different that hadn’t been done before.”

An ER doctor sees just about everything, and Lyons shares some very interesting stories with her readers. Many of the scenes are so real, the reader feels they are sitting in the hospital’s waiting room, watching the drama unfold around them.

The novel is set in Pittsburgh, a city Lyons knows well. “I did my internship in Pittsburgh and loved it,” she says.

“How best to describe this for the reader? I wanted a stranger-comes-to-town type story, like Shane. I’m telling a thriller through the point of view of only women.”

The story opens on July 1, Transition Day, when new interns arrive at the hospital. It also happens to be the first day of work for the book’s main character, Dr. Lydia Fiore, a new ER attending physician at the Angels of Mercy Medical Center.

“I developed a character who grew up in Los Angeles, as far away from Pittsburgh as possible,” Lyons says. “She comes to town and knows no none.”

Lyons immediately puts her character in hot water. “What’s the worst thing that can happen to her?” she asks.

“Lydia starts working at the hospital on July 1, the most dangerous day of the year. It’s only by the grace of God and good nurses that hospitals don’t lose anyone on that day.

“I decided I was going to have her lose a patient and not know why,” Lyons says.

“On her first day of work, she’s ready to lose everything -- her job, her career, her reputation.”

Fortunately for Lydia, she finds three loyal friends among her co-workers at the hospital and one hunky paramedic who becomes her romantic interest. “In the end, it’s not just about saving her, but the entire city,” Lyons says.

Lyons hasn’t gotten anything but praise for her novel. “I was not expecting this response,” she says.

So after a successful 17-year career as a doctor, she decided to write a novel. She left her medical practice behind, causing her partner to ask, “Are you sure you don’t need counseling?”

“I’m trained in pediatric emergency medicine,” Lyons says. “I worked in many hospitals. A little more than a year ago, I took a leap of faith. I knew if I was going to try this writing thing, I would have to do it.”

It turned out to be a good move. Lyons’ first novel, Lifelines, a medical thriller, was accepted by Penguin Books and is now on bookstore shelves. It has gotten rave reviews from several bestselling authors, including Heather Graham, David Morrell, Allison Brennan and Susan Wiggs.

Graham has even dedicated her book The Dead Room in part to Lyons.

“I’ve been writing all my life,. I never thought seriously about getting published until a few years ago. It’s pretty addictive.

I honestly think I would need a 12-step program to stop,” Lyons says.

“I told stories when I was young, which got me put into time-out. I used to use my mom’s hair curlers as finger puppets. I learned to read at an early age and started writing down stories in elementary school.”

Lyons originally thought of being a theater major in college with the idea of doing theater tech. “My sophomore year. I was in a general biology class at the University of North Carolina,” she says.

“One day, a professor said the medical examiner had a homeless person he was doing an autopsy on, if anyone cared to attend. Three of us attended. One was a big beefy guy who said, ‘My dad’s an orthopedic surgeon and I’m going to be one, too,’” Lyons says. “The other was my roommate.

“We put on gloves and held organs. It was fascinating to me. There’s just an infinite variety in the human body. When you look at us, you think everyone is the same, but we’re not. Even this man who had no family, in death he became larger than life.”

The experience was so powerful, Lyons switched her major to pre-med. She studied at the University of Florida medical school.

“I loved going there,” Lyons says. “I fig-

prising. The target audience is women.”

Now when Lyons walks in a bookstore, her book is there. “It still doesn’t feel real,” she says. “I just got back from a trip to New York City. I went to seven bookstores in Manhattan and I signed all the copies they had there. It was so wild. It was everywhere! I did my first reading the week before, and these total strangers came in to hear about me and my book. I’m still kind of pinching myself to make sure it’s real.”

Lyons has been having such a good time, she’s decided to stick with writing.

“For the first time in 17 years, I’m getting a full night’s sleep,” she says. “I do miss the patients a lot. But after awhile, I realized all the things I didn’t miss – arguing with insurance companies, watching friends get sued.”

Lyons is originally from State College, Pa. She grew up in Colorado and Montana, and now lives on Hilton Head Island.

“I found a condo, a fixer-upper in Hilton Head. It’s about two blocks from the beach.

Walking on the beach is the best way to solve most problems.”

Lifelines is a fast-paced, exciting book that will keep readers hooked from the first page. For those who think there are too many loose ends, don’t worry – answers are coming.

Indiana Jones, What Happens in Vegas, Baby Mama, Prom Night, My Blueberry Nights

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) is one of cinema’s all-time greats, while Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) are two sequels that can hold their heads high. Nineteen years after the last installment, Steven Spielberg and pals again demonstrate they weren’t about to rest on their laurels. It’s now 1957, and World War II has since been replaced by the Cold War, meaning our intrepid archeologistprofessor-swashbuckler now has his hands full battling Commies instead of Nazis. The Russians, led by a slinky ball of black-haired menace named Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett), need Indy’s cooperation in helping them obtain an object -- a crystal skull, of course - that will aid them in their quest for world domination. Indie’s journey to thwart them reunites him with Marion Ravenwood (three cheers for the return of Raiders’ Karen Allen) and also allows him to share adventures with

a brash young greaser (Shia LaBeouf) and a loony old professor (John Hurt). Longtime fans will find the references to past films delightful and they’ll similarly be pleased to find Spielberg once again at his most limber. The first two-thirds of the film are such a blast that it makes the final section feel even more like a downer than it would under other circumstances. The plot in each of the first three pictures was convoluted, but all the disparate elements eventually coalesced. By the time we get to the climax here, we demand something truly marvelous, but all we get is a fairly lackluster finale that shamelessly borrows pieces from the Raiders and Last Crusade endings.

Equally disappointing is the realization that the film showcases paper villains not worthy of Indy’s time: Even Blanchett’s Irina Spalko is fairly dry, lacking the suave menace of Paul Freeman’s Belloq (from Raiders) or the slimy sadism of Ronald Lacey’s Major Toht (ditto).

With all four Rambo flicks hitting DVD in a lavish new box set, now’s as good a time as any to check out Son of Rambow, a British coming-of-age yarn whose central premise is that a Sylvester Stallone actioner can influence budding filmmakers as much as any classic ever crafted by Welles, Hitchcock or Lean. Set in a small English community in the 1980s, this sweet fable focuses on Lee Carter (Will Poulter), a mischievous lad who’s always getting into trouble, and Will Proudfoot (Bill Milner), a quiet boy who belongs to a strict religious sect that forbids most contact with the outside world and its trappings (such as film and television). Lee bullies the naive Will into serving as the stuntman on the action flick he’s creating for the sake of a TV competition (Screen Test, an actual U.K. series back in the ‘70s and ‘80s); once Will watches First Blood, Lee’s inspiration for his own film, his imagination is fired by this taboo medium and he throws himself wholeheartedly into the project.

It all sounds a bit precious, but Poulter and especially Milner are such charismatic young performers that they inject Son of Rambow with some genuine poignancy (both boys lack father figures, to say nothing of friends) to go along with the expected comic shenanigans. And the word is that even Sly Stallone gave this film a blessing, marking one of the few times that the guy involved with the likes of Judge Dredd and Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot has displayed a modicum of good taste.

The Strangers One of my cinematic pet peeves is when a fellow scribe describes a motion picture as pointless. Despite the scarcity of story, or lack of depth among the characters, or general ineptitude on every level, the filmmakers had some sort of vision -- some raison d’etre -- for making their movie, and that alone means it has some sort of point. Now here comes The Strangers to test out my long-standing theory and risk turning me into a hypocrite. Is there a point to this anemic thriller in which a young couple (Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman) are terrorized in a secluded vacation home by three masked invaders? Maybe the point is to show how none of us are really safe from the evils of the outside world, even when we’re in our own homes. That’s a moldy premise that barely needs repeating: For starters, just the past two months alone have seen the theatrical release of Funny Games and the DVD release of the French import Them, both wielding identical plotlines. Or perhaps writer-director Bryan Bertino’s only purpose is to scare the living hell out of audience members,

a noble pursuit in this age of fright-free terror tales. But The Strangers isn’t scary, only boring, and the final image shows that Bertino didn’t even have the balls to follow the story to its logical ending. His cop-out may not make the movie even more pointless, but it certainly makes it more insulting.

Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian

Fantasy fans who felt the void created by the wrap-up of the Lord of the Rings flicks in 2003 could take comfort in the identical elements -- magical creatures, large-scale battles, simplistic delineation of good versus evil -- that were on display in 2005’s The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

With that film proving to be almost as potent at the box office as the LOTR trilogy, we now get The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, which turns out to be that rare sequel which improves upon the original. Prince Caspian is decidedly a darker picture than its predecessor, which seems to be the path taken by many second installments in film franchises (The Empire Strikes Back, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Back to the Future Part II, The Care Bears Movie II: A New Generation). In this one, the four Pevensie kids -- Peter (William Moseley), Susan (Anna Popplewell), Edmund (Skandar Keynes) and Lucy (Georgie Henley) -- find themselves at a London subway station one minute and back in the magical land of Narnia the next. But this isn’t the lovely, bright Narnia they left behind; now 1,300 years later (in Narnian time, of course), they’ve returned to find a gloomy environment in which humans (the Telmarine race) have taken over and all mystical creatures are believed to be extinct.

One of the Telmarines, the dashing Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes), is the rightful heir to the throne, but after an assassination attempt by his uncle (Sergio Castellitto), he elects to hightail it to the woods, where he discovers that talking animals and other enchanted Narnia denizens still exist after all. Eventually, the prince, the woodland inhabitants and the Pevensie siblings band forces to restore Narnia to its previous glory. A couple of familiar faces from the previous picture return in small roles, yet it’s cast newcomer Peter Dinklage (The Station Agent) who walks away with this film; he’s excellent as Trumpkin, a surly dwarf who slowly warms up to the four children who invade his territory. As for the kids, this is clearly a case where girls rule, boys drool. Susan cuts a fierce figure as a warrior queen, while Lucy is allowed to establish the strongest bonds with the Narnians. On the other hand, the interesting Edmund is given too little to do, while Peter is only slightly less generic than fellow pretty-boy Caspian. continues on page 30

My Blueberry Nights is a movie of firsts. It’s the first English-language picture helmed by acclaimed Hong Kong director Wong Kar-Wai (In the Mood for Love); it’s the first acting role for music star Norah Jones (landing the leading role in her maiden on-screen voyage); and it’s the first flick to manage the difficult feat of wasting the considerable talents of both Rachel Weisz and Natalie Portman. Jones stars as Elizabeth, a New Yorker distraught over the breakup with her cheating boyfriend and pouring her sorrows out to sympathetic cafe owner Jeremy (Jude Law). One night, she elects to bolt from the city to find herself; her travels take her first to Memphis, where she befriends an alcoholic cop (David Strathairn) separated from -- but still in love with -- his flirtatious wife (Weisz), and then to a Nevada town, where she hooks up with a gambler (Portman) with daddy issues. As we can expect from master visualist Wong (working with ace cinematographer Darius Khondji), the dreamy, color-coordinated look of the film is the real star; it certainly has more presence than Jones, who’s merely adequate in her film debut. Her monotony stands in stark contrast to the broad turns by Weisz and especially Portman, both defeated by poorly defined caricatures. In fact, considering Wong’s reputation for creating memorable and sensitive female characters, it’s odd that the ones on view here aren’t especially noteworthy. Odder still is the fact that Elizabeth’s soul-searching is the direct result of - of all things -- being dumped by a guy.

Wong’s Hong Kong efforts are steeped in romanticism, but here, something clearly got lost in translation.

When invited to join me at the press screening for What Happens In Vegas, a good friend of mine declined, e-mailing, “I can only stand one romantic comedy a year, and No Country for Old Men was it for me in ‘08.” That quip’s funnier than anything found in the actual movie, and 20th Century Fox would have done well to hire him to pen the film’s screenplay.

As it stands, this is the year’s umpteenth assembly-line rom-com, although it’s admittedly easier to take than most of its predecessors: It’s less obnoxious than Fool’s Gold, less forced than Made of Honor and less formulaic (well, by a sliver, anyway) than 27 Dresses. Cameron Diaz plays Joy, an ambitious Wall Street trader who’s just been dumped by her fiancé (Jason Sudeikis); Ashton Kutcher is Jack, a slacker who’s just been fired from the company business by his own dad (Treat Williams). They both decide to head to Vegas, where they meet, get drunk and

wind up married. After sobering up, they realize they don’t even like each other, so once they’re back in New York, they try desperately to get a divorce. Instead, the judge (Dennis Miller) sentences them to six months of marriage, requiring them to visit a counselor (Queen Latifah) weekly to monitor their progress.Diaz is typically winning, while Kutcher doesn’t blend in with the furniture as much as he usually does. But those attending the film hoping to scope out the title city will be disappointed, since most of the action takes place in New York City.

Speed Racer To complain about the excesses of Speed Racer would be like bitching that there are too many rib eyes kept on ice at your local steakhouse, or that there are too many references to God in the Holy Bible. Anyone who ever watched the original 1960s cartoon series (which, along with Kimba the White Lion, largely introduced Americans to Japanese anime long before it became the mainstream rage) can recall that show’s frenetic pace, often zippy visuals and gaudy color schemes. The Wachowski Brothers, who created a whole new world with The Matrix, have now decided to push the envelope once again, this time by transforming the cheesy, on-the-cheap cartoon into a gargantuan, all-expenses-paid summer blockbuster. It’s clear that one of their goals was to introduce a new visual vocabulary to cinema, perhaps even influencing the direction of the medium itself.

That’s not likely to happen. Love it or hate it, there’s no denying the visual wizardry behind Speed Racer. But visual wizardry is about all that the movie has going for it, and it’s hard to rally the troops behind so chilly a leader.

Iron Man Given their general status as popcorn flicks heavier on the decadent calories than on the nutritional value, I’m always pleasantly surprised by how much care Hollywood studios take when it comes to casting their superheroes in franchise flicks.

Otherwise, we’d have had to endure such box office draws as Adam Sandler as Superman, Will Ferrell as Spider-Man and Mike Myers as Wolverine. Instead, we’ve been lucky enough to have been privy to (for starters) Christopher Reeve as Superman, Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine (George Clooney as Batman, not so much). With Iron Man, Paramount Pictures settled on an actor who turned out to be both unexpected and just right. Robert Downey Jr. is hardly an unknown, yet any baggage he brings to the role only serves to enhance the character, not diminish him. Center-

Made of Honor Those of us reviewing films back in the late 80s/early 90s remember Patrick Dempsey as a talentless 20-something who regularly turned up in bombs like Run and Loverboy. He largely disappeared for a decade or so, occasionally popping up in

minor TV projects and straight-to-DVD titles, before unexpectedly rising Lazaruslike from the dead with a career-redefining turn on the hit series Grey’s Anatomy. It must be said that middle age agrees with the 42-year-old Dempsey. As witnessed in last year’s Enchanted and now Made of Honor, Dempsey has settled into being a competent (if passive) romantic lead on the big screen. And for his first starring role since his rebirth (since Enchanted was all about Amy Adams), he’s wisely picked a project that will only further his standing as the country’s resident “McDreamy.” Unfortunately, those of us hoping for entertainment value beyond mere eye candy will be sorely left hanging with Made of Honor, the sort of romantic comedy that Hollywood spits out of the formula factory on a tight schedule.

The second underachieving rom-com of the year to headline a Grey’s Anatomy player (the first was Katherine Heigl’s 27 Dresses), this cribs from the vastly superior My Best Friend’s Wedding in its portrayal of two longtime pals -- one male (Dempsey’s womanizing Tom), one female (Michelle Monaghan’s brainy Hannah) -- who have always been afraid that intimacy would ruin their perfect camaraderie. But once Hannah goes to Scotland for six weeks, Tom realizes that she’s been the right one all along; unfortunately, when she returns stateside, it’s with a fiancé (Kevin McKidd) in tow. Comic desperation can be seen at alarmingly frequent intervals. The fellating-female-bobblehead gag was handled far more wittily in Forgetting Sarah Marshall (is this 2008’s unexpected movie trend?), while other dim comic bits include such Hail Mary desperation passes as Hannah’s grandmother mistaking glow-in-the-dark anal beads for a necklace (and of course wearing them throughout the film) and a Scottish relative’s name, Athol, being misunderstood by the Americans as -- well, take a guess.

Baby Mama With Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler and other comedians routinely hoarding the screens in our nation’s multiplexes, here come Tina Fey and Amy Poehler to remind audiences that, like their male counterparts, girls just want to have fun. Indeed, the Cyndi Lauper hit of that name is granted its own karaoke-set scene in Baby Mama, and its inclusion is fitting in a movie that’s similarly pointed, joyous, and light on its feet.Even funnier than the current Forgetting Sarah Marshall (which itself is pretty damn funny), Baby Mama stars Fey as Kate Holbrook, a successful businesswoman who finds out that she only has a one-in-a-million chance of getting pregnant. Wanting a child more than a man (but open to both), this news hits her hard, and she turns to an agency to provide her with a surrogate mom. She ends up getting Angie Ostrowiski (Poehler), who clearly resides several rungs down the social ladder. After Angie becomes pregnant, circumstances force her to move in with Kate, and it’s not long before Angie’s slovenly lifestyle clashes with Kate’s obsessive-compulsive behavior, and vice versa. The plot complications arrive with clockwork precision, and it’s this rigid formula (along with a ludicrous development

at the end) that prevents a fine movie from being even better. Yet judging it strictly on its comic merits, Baby Mama delivers (pun not intended, I assure you). Scripter Michael McCullers (who also directed) serves up several killer quips guaranteed to remain among the year’s freshest, and the two perfectly cast leading ladies are backed by an engaging mix of emerging talents and seasoned veterans. Among the relative newcomers, Romany Malco is a bright presence as a straight-talking doorman, while Dax Shepard holds his own as Angie’s doofus boyfriend. Yet it’s the old pros who really shine: Sigourney Weaver is suitably smug as the head of the surrogate center, gamely being shellacked by some of the script’s best zingers. And then there’s Steven Martin, spot-on as the creator of the organic health food chain for which Kate works.

Mocking New Age-y tendencies is a moldy idea long past its expiration date, yet in his portrayal of the ponytailed Barry, Martin positively makes it seem like a notion that’s never been tackled before. Whether namedropping celebrities with delicate precision or “rewarding” Kate with five minutes of uninterrupted eye contact, Barry is a real piece of P.C. work.

ing on the Marvel Comics character created back in 1963, Iron Man smoothly updates the action from the Vietnam War era to the Iraq War era without missing a beat. Swaggering, self-centered inventor and industrialist Tony Stark (Downey) has attained both fame and fortune by providing the U.S. military with its most reliable weapons of mass destruction. While in Afghanistan to show off his latest invention, Stark is captured and injured by a group of insurgents who drag him off to their mountainside lair. There, a fellow prisoner (Shaun Toub) creates an electromagnetic device that prevents shrapnel from reaching Stark’s heart.

Realizing that this is only a temporary fix, the two set about working from Stark’s designs on how to build a special suit of armor. Back home, Stark re-evaluates his life and realizes that instead of continuing to build instruments of death, he wants to dedicate himself to fighting for peace. This decision perplexes his faithful right-hand woman Pepper Potts (a game Gwyneth Paltrow), his best friend Rhodey (Terrence Howard, asked to coast until the next film) and his business partner Obadiah Stane (an imaginatively cast Jeff Bridges). Nevertheless, Stark won’t be swayed, and to accomplish his goal, he sets about building a sleeker, more efficient and infinitely cooler outfit. Stark’s difficulties provide the film with many of its most amusing moments, as do the flirtatious interludes between Stark and Pepper (Downey and Paltrow work well together).
