Best of the festival — so far This marks the final week of the 2008 Savannah Music Festival. While as usual I didn’t get to see as many concerts as I wanted to, the ones I have seen only reinforced my original assessment — hardly a profound one — that this has been the most artistically daring and complete Music Festival to date.

As usual, the entire Music Festival staff has been a delight to work with. They’re entirely professional, completely unflappable, and a lot of fun to hang around. But I have to especially thank Ryan McMaken for continuing to raise the bar for PR professionals in town and for helping us take our coverage of the Festival to the next level. phony at the same performance. Tchaikovksy’s music has a lot of adolescent, even ham-fisted, traits which are easy to lampoon. If a conductor feels this material beneath him or her in some way, their snark will be painfully apparent to the audience. But Spano never condescended, instead bringing out the best of the Russian’s sentimental, childlike nature.

• The twin fiddles of the up-and-coming family bluegrass group Cherryholmes. While the group’s vocals and stage act are unpolished and not far removed from what you’d hear at any bluegrass festival anywhere, what made this performance special for me were young fiddlers B.J. and Molly Kate. B.J., all of 19 years old, is one of these freakishly talented prodigies who can instantly play the crap out just about any instrument they pick up, in any style or genre. He’s easily one of the best two or three fiddle players I’ve ever heard. His sister Molly

The Savannah City Council has become active in pursuing environmental conservation, especially stewardship of water resources.

One way to reduce water consumption is by re-using indoor gray water -- water from sinks, bathtubs and washing machines, which is treated and handled so it can be re-used safely in toilets. On March 27, the council approved an ordinance that allows homeowners to install a gray water system.

The cost of installing one in a new house starts at $2,200, but the

systems eventually pay for themselves because water and sewer bills are lower. Having a gray water system in place can help projects become LEED certified.

The ordinance includes safety standards that must be met. Designs must be completed by a registered professional engineer and the system must be installed by a Class II certified plumber.

Kate, only 15 years old, is actually the more mature musician, though. The left-hander is obviously a great student of the fiddle and a more serious, well-rounded player than her brother. And yes, both of them teamed up for a twin-fiddle performance of “Orange Blossom Special,” which had to be heard to be believed.

• The deceptively brilliant guitar playing of Chas Justus with the Red Stick Ramblers.

He mixes jazz with swing with blues and just enough outright rock ‘n’ roll, playing it all with such passion and delight that you might not realize what a sensitive ear he has for American roots music. There’s something about this group of young men from Louisiana (playing very retro music) that really clicked for me, though the songs they play are no great shakes.

They’re great onstage together, they obviously love what they do, and I really dug the 1920’sera clothes and haircut of singer/fiddler Linzay Young, whose vocals remind me of Willie Nelson’s in their subtle jazz phrasing.

But as I write this there’s still a whole week to go, so likely my list will only be expanded upon. Our music editor Jim Reed went to a whole lot more shows than I did, and you can read his entertaining capsule reviews online at www.connectsavannah.com.

By the way, it seems like the new Charles H. Morris Center is a big success, with musicians and audiences alike all seeming to enjoy the venue. The decision to put the stage on the long end of the back wall was especially fortuitous, allowing not only better sight lines but more intimacy between band and audience.

In other action, the council discussed the status of Sustainable Fellwood, a mixed-use, mixedincome development planned for west Savannah. Located on the former 25-acre Fellwood Homes public housing site on West Bay Street, it will be built in phases.

Eventually, 220 units of family rental housing, 100 units of senior rental housing, 13 single-family homes and 13 townhouses will be constructed. Neighborhood-friendly retail space will be provided, with 40,000 square feet set aside for businesses.

The estimated cost of the devel-

opment is $45-50 million. The city has committed $4.5 in SPLOST funds for infrastructure improvements at the site.

Last year, the council approved a resolution of support for the developer’s Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) application with the Georgia Department of Community Affairs for the first phase. At the meeting, the council passed resolutions of support for the LIHTC applications for the second and third phases.

Construction of Phase I could begin as early as July. If the LIHTC funding is approved, construction of the second phase will begin in spring 2009 and be completed by summer 2010.

Phase III is designed for seniors, with a head of household 62 or older. Construction could begin as early as spring 2009 and completed by summer 2010.

For me the most memorable moments of the Festival have been, in no particular order: • Garrick Ohlsson’s surrealistically in-thezone performance of Rachmaninoff ’s Third Piano Concerto with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Of course as anyone who’s seen the movie Shine knows, the “Rach 3” is known as the most fiendishly challenging piece of major piano music ever written. With not a scrap of sheet music available to guide him through its many thousands of notes, Ohlsson’s mastery was effortlessly in-the-moment. (Like Rachmaninoff himself, Ohlsson is a very tall man with massive range on the keyboard, which no doubt contributes to his command of the piece.) Ohlsson’s sensitivity to the intricacies of the concerto revealed the real lyricism there, not a word often associated with Rachmaninoff.

Peace out Editor, In response to Musa Burr’s letter: Who is the “guilty man” to hang? It seems Musa is ready to incite change and more power to Musa. The ability for people to incite change is a basic tenet of our democratic system.

The power going out was not a good target of Musa’s rage against our current system. People used to revolt against things that made a difference, many times beteween life and death: unsafe working conditions, unsanitary living conditions, lack of staples or wages too low to buy the staples.

To revolt against one night without power in a country that has one of the highest standards of living is completely misdirected, and understandably did not garner any support besides drunken “get ‘ems.”

Obama’s Wright!

Editor, Before we witness anymore hysteria on the Obama-Rev. Wright flap, there are other facts to consider: First, according to the March 24 New-

wseek, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright is no longer Obama’s minister. After a year-long period of transition, the Rev. Otis Moss III became the pastor last month. The Obama campaign has also announced that Rev. Wright will no longer serve the campaign in any capacity.

Along with building Trinity Church from a small congregation to one where some 8,000 people worship every Sunday, Rev. Wright has done other things as well.

In the 1970s, when his United Church of Christ decided to ordain gays and lesbians, Wright started a singles group for gays and lesbians. He also began one of the first AIDS ministries there as well.

It is a neighborhood where some 20 percent of the residents are on welfare, and an equal number are unemployed.

As for his intemperate remarks on the U.S., Abraham Lincoln said basically the same thing, in a more polite manner: “Indeed, I tremble for my country when I recall that God is just.”

Having lived in both the North and the South as a Navy wife, I know that racism is as prevalent there as here. Perhaps moreso, since there has been no campaign to eradicate it, as has happened in the South.

From past experiences with different congregations I also know that intemperate language is not unusual in some of them.

However, I believe that is gradually changing, as seems to be the case at Trinity.

I am more interested in what a candidate says or does rather than the words of a former minister. The fact that Obama is the only leading candidate to vote against the war the president’s own father, a WWII combat veteran, warned us against in his memoirs means more to me than any theology.

Here comes the sun

These are some of the things that persuaded Richard and Katherine Claar to to install the most comprehensive solarbased system in Savannah: • Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth; • A poster promoting GreenFest, •A TV news clip demonstrating solar panels producing enough electricity to power an air conditioner, • And a boost in corn prices due to the ethanol boom, • Followed by a long conversation with a solar installer.

Located in a lot set back from Bonaventure Road in Thunderbolt, the Claar house now boasts two solar hot water panels, six solar photovoltaic panels, and a Solar Tube natural lighting system.

The combination will heat a 120-gallon hot water tank, produce a kilowatt of electricity every sunny hour, and provide natural illumination of a formerly darkened room.

“We look at it as a win-win-win situation,” says Katherine Claar, “We’re gathering energy from the sun to generate part of our electricity; it’s good for the planet

and neighborhood, saving on our electric bills, and taking advantage of a federal tax credit. We feel a little proud of ourselves.”

They were both impressed by the amount of information provided by Julian Smith, of SolarSmith, who designed the system and installed it with his brother Kenneth.

As Richard Claar tells his colleagues at Gulfstream, who wonder if they should install solar, “I tell them to definitely look into it. It doesn’t hurt to ask questions and you might be surprised about the answers.”

He thinks that more people are looking, “but they don’t know that they are looking.”

The Claars lived on Tybee from 19951999, moved back to the Urbana area of Illinois, but returned in 2004 where Richard Claar resumed his quality assurance position with Gulfstream testing for hidden flaws using x-ray and ultrasound equipment.

Katherine Claar is now involved in

photography and the Bonaventure Historic Society and manages the 516-acre corn and soybean family farm back in Illinois.

“I’m the third generation of female absentee landowners, “ she says.

It was at a recycling center that she noticed the poster for GreenFest where she met Julian Smith who was exhibiting there.

While the couple was mulling over the idea of going solar they saw Smith’s demonstration on WTOC, and decided to ask some questions.

The ethanol boom was bringing much higher prices for the corn crop. “We were looking for a good, healthy, environmentally friendly way to use some of that money,” says Katherine Claar. “Solar fills the bill. When you put money in a Vanguard Fund it is just on paper. Solar is very tangible. It is something you can see and feel.”

“The house has a good stretch of southfacing roof,” says Julian Smith. “There was space to put in both a solar electric and a solar hot water system, with enough to double the number of panels in the future.”

The Claars also installed a Solar Tube, a dome-shaped skylight, to brighten one room. “The interior surface of this model is coated with silver,” says Julian Smith, “and reflects 98 percent of the light. It’s designed

to illuminate a 600 square foot area.”

The electric system is hooked into the utility grid and all the electricity produced is sold back to Georgia Power at a much higher rate per kilowatt-hour than the Claars have to pay.

As a bonus, Julian and Kenneth Smith went to Home Depot and brought back an armload of Compact Fluorescent Bulbs and replaced almost every bulb in the house.

The combined savings in electricity using solar hot water, and the electricity generated by the photovoltaic system, start almost immediately. Her experience managing the family farm will allow Katherine Claar to accurately document the savings.

“I’ve been monitoring household cash flow ever since the farm came to me in 1980,” she says. “I have every power bill since we moved in here and I intend to start making comparisons after we get a full month’s operation.”

Richard Claar hopes that as Gulfstream starts to go green, the company will also go solar. In addition to acres of roof space, “there is marginal land that would accommodate a small ground-mounted solar farm.”

Sweet relief

Honey is one of nature’s most useful remedies Honey has been used for centuries as a source of food, a commodity to be traded, a highly sought after luxury item, a medicinal and more. How about an all natural remedy that requires no refrigeration, will not grow mold or bacteria and has an amazingly long shelf life.

In ancient cultures, honey was used to treat burns and wounds. Some 4000 years ago ancient Egyptians used honey in medicine and make-up. There are records of its use to treat wounds and open sores to prevent infection on the battlefield. In more recent folk medicine it is used to treat coughs and bronchitis.

In a modern day “hot totty” honey is mixed with lemon juice, tea and brandy to treat the cough or viral upper respiratory infection. Recent FDA recommendations to doctors are that they not use over-thecounter cold and cough medications on children under 2 years of age and warn that more research is needed before widespread acceptance of these medications to be used in children under six.

What is a parent to do who has a child up all night coughing? Honey may be the answer.

A recent study at Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania, researchers found a dose of buckwheat honey before bedtime is far more effective than dextromethorpan (DM) found in most over the counter cough suppressants.

Buckwheat honey is a dark honey. It is gathered by bees foraging for nectar from the buckwheat grain’s little white flowers.

Light honey, of which we are more familiar, has fewer of the properties of cough suppression as does this darker honey.

Pound for pound there is much more nutritional value and medicinal effect in the darker honeys.

Honey main constituent parts are levulose and dextrose. These two sugars in near equal amounts make up almost 80% of the sugars in honey. Levulose is a unique sugar in that it is readily assimilated by the human alimentary tract without the use of any digestive enzymes.

It also is absorbed rather slowly, not allowing for a large spike in blood sugars.

This low glycemic index property makes honey safe for use in diabetic patients.

The slow uptake of levulose allows for this sugar to reach the large colon which is most likely responsible for the laxative effect of honey.

Honey also contains polyphenols which makes it a good source of antioxidants. These antioxidant properties play a role in cleansing the body of free radicals implicated in serious illness, such as cancer and heart disease.

Honey is said to be relaxing and taking it in the evenings can offer a natural and safe way to induce sleep. It is also thought to have anti-inflammatory properties.

Some researchers believe that the bee may spray the comb with small amounts of venom before placing honey in them, and while this is controversial it may account for some of the healing properties of honey and its anti-inflammatory properties.

While there is the misconception that bee venom contains formic acid (like that seen in red/fire ants) it has been scientifically proven not to exist, yet the general public is still under this impression.

Some studies have shown that the active ingredient melittin in bee venom may have curative properties in the rheumatologic and arthritic diseases.

Honey contains a number of nutrients in addition to the levulose and dextrose sugars namely some proteins and enzymes. Three important enzymes are present in honey: invertase, diastase, and glucose oxidase. Enzymes are most likely a result of the bee’s process of converting nectar into honey, since they are not found in the nectar.

Other bacterial and yeast/fungi fighting properties of honey include the high sugar content (with the osmotic effect of literally drying out microbes) and its relative acidity (malic acid and other natural acids) that inhibit microbial growth and make honey bacteriastatic.

Honey produced exclusively for medical purposes in New Zealand and Australia have antibacterial phenol-like substances from bees that forage within the native Leptospermum species of trees.

Since the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Chest Physicians do not condone the use of dextromethorpan for childhood cough, as this medication has been implicated in accidental overdoses and in recent years been used by teenagers in order to get high, a viable alternative in dark honey.

However, it is not recommended for children under the age of one-year. Honey can harbor the spores of Clostridium botulinnum, the cause of infantile botulism. This bacterium however is harmless in older children and adults.

Describe what your job entails.

Kacey Stewart: Well, I’m usually a concessionist, which means I clean, pop the popcorn, and give customers their food and drinks.

What training does your job require?

Kacey Stewart: Usually all of the employees start at door, which is where you clean theatres and tear tickets. You also have to clean the bathrooms. Then you are trained on concession, and then on box to sell tickets.

Did you always want to have this job?

Kacey Stewart: I love movies, so working at a movie theatre just sort of fit.

What’s your favorite part about your job?

Kacey Stewart: My favorite thing about the job is the people. I love the people I work with. I consider them all friends, and the atmosphere is so friendly, I love to just hang out even when I’m not working.

And your least favorite?

What is the strangest or funniest experience that you have had at work?

Kacey Stewart: The funniest time was when I was working door and there was a group of people who came in and they were all giggly. After I tore their tickets, they ran down the hall laughing and before they got into the theatre, I saw one guy pull out a pizza he’d been hiding under his coat. I thought I smelled pizza! Needless to say, we took care of it, but I think they got to finish their pizza outside of the theatre. Also, there was one time when a kid got his arm stuck in a drink holder. How he got it in there, I have no clue, but right as the fire department came, the kid got free.

What is the most important thing you have learned from your job?

Kacey Stewart: My people skills. I am not the most outgoing person, but my job has helped me with that.

Court of Cassation judges said that her honor is more important than providing intimate information about her lover. (2) The North Carolina Court of Appeals voted 2-1 in February to approve a worker compensation claim for only one of a woman’s breast-implant replacements, ruling that the other implant ruptured (in a job-related accident) only because it had been improperly installed. (The dissenting judge said, even so, the compensation fund should pay for the second replacement, too, because to achieve their purpose, both breasts must be aligned properly on the chest.)

When Johnny Diablo’s year-old vegan restaurant failed to catch on in Portland, Ore., last year, he converted the space into Casa Diablo’s Gentlemen’s Club, which is what he believes is the world’s only vegan strip club. He has no rule against meateating dancers, he told Willamette Week newspaper in February, but won’t permit leather, fur, silk or wool outfits on stage (no “murder victims” in the club, he said).

He did not notice that a uniformed Boston police officer, working security, had slipped quietly behind him in line, and he arrested Grennan immediately as Grennan was quietly demanding large bills and “no funny money.”

Update Padre Pio, who died in 1968 and was sponsored for sainthood by Pope John Paul II, has been a controversial figure, as News of the Weird reported in 1999. He was loved by his parishioners, yet viewed skeptically by Vatican officials who found his claim of hands bleeding from crucifixion holes and of having been eye-gouged in a wrestling match with the devil to be difficult to authenticate. On orders from Pope Benedict XVI, Padre Pio’s body was exhumed in March, to be placed on public display for several months at the Vatican, even though problematic for two reasons.

The top part of his skull is exposed, presenting an unsettling image, but more important, there obviously are no crucifixion holes or scars on his hands or feet.

Undignified Deaths Toby Taylor, 37, of York County, Pa., was charged with involuntary manslaughter in January after his wife died of a heart attack in an accident during sex, and police found the woman’s body (according to the York Daily Record) with “alligator clips on the end of a stripped electric cord ... attached to her breasts,” with an on-off switch. About two weeks earlier, 100 miles away in New Berlinville, Pa., a 23-yearold construction worker was electrocuted when he placed electric clips to his chest piercings (despite colleagues’ warnings).

Domestic violence, with a car

A woman was accused of running her boyfriend down with her car during an argument on Beech Street.

Police were called to the scene in reference to an assault. An officer saw a man lying on his back in the street in obvious discomfort.

People in the area who witnessed the fight said that the man had been run down by his girlfriend. A lookout was broadcast on all channels for the car and suspect.

One of the witnesses said he had seen the couple parked in a car, both striking each other with open and closed hands. The man left the car from the front passenger side, walked to the driver’s side and opened the driver’s door.

The two continued fighting physically until the man disengaged himself and stepped back from the car. At that point, the woman drive the car forward, and turned.

The man stepped into her path, with his

hand up. The witnesses said she slowed the car and attempted to get around the man, but he moved and placed himself in front of the car ahead and she ran him down.

• A man was arrested and charged with shoplifting at an Abercorn Street convenience store after attempting to steal 50 cents worth of merchandise.

An officer saw the owner of the store and the suspect arguing as they walked out of the store. The owner told the officer that he saw the suspect place one 25 cent granola bar and a 25 cent package of candy in his pocket.

The suspect then purchased a cigar and tried to leave the store with the candy and granola bar. The owner said at that point, he locked the exit doors and advised the suspect he was calling police.

The two then exchanged words and the suspect punched the owner in the right eye. The officer observed redness and swelling under the owner’s right eye, but the victim refused treatment by EMS. • A fight broke out at the intersection of Reynolds and Seiler. The officer who responded spoke with a woman who said her boyfriend got jealous and punched her on the right side of her face. She said he also slammed her on the ground, but

told the officer she didn’t need treatment from EMS. There was some noticeable swelling on the right side of her face.

The suspect had taken the woman’s phone so the officer called the cell number and spoke with the man. He agreed to return to the scene to speak with police. He claimed he hadn’t hit the woman at all, but that she bit him on the left side of his face.

• A woman staying at an Abercorn Street inn called police to say she’d received a threatening phone call from a man.

She said the man told her that another man they both know had been sentenced to prison, and that when he gets out, he’s going to be looking for her. The man told her that someone may already be looking for her now.

The woman said the man who has been sentenced thinks she is the reason he was arrested because she was the last person he spoke to before officers with the Chatham Narcotics Team walked up on him. She said she feels threatened by the conversation and asked that it be documented.

• Police were called to a restaurant in Skidaway Village on a report that a minor tried to purchase alcohol with a false ID. An officer spoke with a restaurant employee, who said a young man had asked to buy a drink and displayed a false Oklahoma driver’s license. When the employee Googled the address on the ID, it came back as invalid. A second employee said the young man asked her for an alcoholic beverage and displayed the same ID. She asked the man for his date of birth and said he had a difficult time remembering the date of birth on the false ID. The officer walked to the bar, and the young man was still there. He identified himself and told the officer he knew why he was there. The suspect admitted displaying a false ID that he got “from some people at college,” and said he knew the ID was false. His real age is 19.

earthweek Antarctic Collapse Satellite images taken in late February and March revealed that Antarctica’s massive Wilkins Ice Shelf is collapsing due to climate change on the most rapidly warming part of the continent. U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center lead scientist Ted Scambos told reporters that while the area of collapse currently involves only 160 square miles, a large part of the 5,000-squaremile ice shelf on the Antarctic Peninsula is being held back from the ocean by only a narrow strip of ice between two islands. “If there is a little bit more retreat, this last ‘ice buttress’ could collapse and we’d likely lose about half the total ice shelf area in the next few years,” Scambos said.

Western sections of the Antarctic Peninsula have experienced the greatest observed warming anywhere on the planet over the past 50 years, with temperatures rising 0.9 degrees Fahrenheit per decade. With Antarctica’s summer melt season now ending, scientists do not expect the Wilkins to further disintegrate during the upcoming wintertime months.

“This unusual show is over for this season,” Scambos said. “But come (next) January, we’ll be watching to see if the Wilkins continues to fall apart.”

Rio Dengue Epidemic Health authorities in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro state confirmed that an outbreak of dengue fever is spreading at the rate of one new infection every minute.

The number of people who have died from the viral disease so far this year has reached 49, but the figure could be much higher if lab results from another 49 people who died show they were also infected. Officials have warned people to wear long pants, closed shoes and socks to minimize the chance they will be bitten by the mosquito that spreads the virus.

Earthquakes A series of strong temblors in northwest China’s Xinjiang region wrecked more than 2,000 homes and numerous greenhouses and livestock sheds, according to regional officials. No fatalities were reported from any of the quakes.

Some of the molten rock was ejected with enough force to reach the rim of the crater, with the largest fragments measuring about 4 inches across. The U.S. Geological Survey told reporters that an accompanying plume of ash soaring high into the sky is a sign the volcano is going through some profound geophysical changes.

Unusual activity in March has included increased lava flow around Kilauea and the first explosive eruption in Halemaumau crater since 1924. The volcano has also been expelling higher volumes of toxic gas in recent weeks.

Rodent Tools A highly social, intelligent rodent native to the highlands of Chile

has been trained to use a tool and understand its function, challenging earlier beliefs that only primates and birds are smart enough to do so. Researchers at Japan’s Riken Brain Science Institute say they trained six adult degu rodents to use a tiny rake to obtain food. Food and sunflower seeds were placed behind a clear fence, along with a T-shaped rake.

After an average of 57 days, the degus were said to be able to get the food with at least a 75 percent success rate, regardless of where the food and rake were placed.

The findings suggest that many animals could use tools, although such ability may be doubtful for fish, according to researcher Kazou Okanoya. by steve newman, Universal press syndicate

Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver After being bowled over

by Bill Monroe at age 11, this mandolinist from the outskirts of Kingsport, Tn. (home of the 70-ft blue flame, Dillard Clark and Mr. Buzzard) wound up touring the world as a member of bluegrass superstars The Country Gentlemen. Since ‘79, he’s led this group — which has been one of the most popular traditional bluegrass acts to play and record both secular and bornagain gospel music. Membership in his band changes often, with being a cog in Lawson’s wheel serving as a rite of passage for many up-and-coming pickers.

That also helps to keep his shows fresh (and probably stops folks from getting too big for their britches). Truth is, they just don’t make ‘em like Doyle anymore. I’m told that as of our print deadline there were only a dozen $30 seats left for this intimate, smoke and alcohol free family-oriented show, so call 748-1930 immediately if you want to try and snag one of the few that remain! The Josh Maul Blues Band Now that warmer weather is upon us, this funky and laid-back Caribbean eatery in the shadow of Tybee’s Lighthouse is once more hosting live local and regional bands on a weekly basis. The groups play in the open air on the restaurant’s back deck, which means the shows are subject to clear skies, but even with a strong breeze, it’s a flat-out great place to catch feel-good sets by the better rock, bluegrass, soul and jazz combos around. This tight Richmond Hill-based group owes a stylistic debt to the works of Albert Collins, SRV and Tab Benoit, and features former members of the ever popular Bluesonics. Once folks grab a good seat, they tend to hold onto them and sip the night away, so get

Vinx, Tubby Love Now that this hard-to-define cult figure on the soul, world music and jazz scenes has relocated to a small town near Savannah (after years in L.A.) he’s become a repeat headliner at this, our only dedicated jazz club and restaurant. He’s toured and recorded with scores of major artists (most notably Sting), and you’ve likely heard his percussive, vaguely exotic compositions

peppered throughout many TV shows and films over the years without ever realizing it. His solo sets feature just his incredibly expressive voice (and his equally notable percussive talents), but they are anything but boring. Despite a harrowing stage name, Tubby Love is a young, very promising local singer/songwriter with a funky, syncopated acoustic/electric guitar style. He augments his tunes with digitally looped backing, and his contemporary organic soul-pop reeks of a Kingston fixation. He’s a perfect support act for Vinx. Fri. - Sat., 8 pm, $10 cover.

Bluesman Tinsley Ellis returns

Famed guitarist on the old Night Flight, life on the road, and his new CD

Tinsley Ellis just might be the baddest-ass blues-rock guitarist you’ve never heard of. Yet the fact he’s not a household name (except of course, among the kind of folks who keep up with badass guitarists) doesn’t exactly keep him up at night.

“I don’t really pay much attention to whether I’m famous or not,” says the 50year-old frontman. “I’m happy to have never had a day job since the ‘70s. That’s my definition of success.”

With the talent, drive and bareknuckled determination to forge an enviable career for himself in the often cutthroat world of contemporary blues music, Ellis hasn’t had to resort to punching a clock or showing up suitand-tied at a straightlaced office gig — but in many ways, he’s worked much harder than most folks who hold down such reliable, standardized jobs.

His life is one of evening gigs in smoky clubs, theaters and the occasional afternoon set at an outdoor music festival. It’s filled with the kind of whiteline fever that can only come from playing an average of 150 road dates a year both here and abroad. And for close to three decades, that’s the only life this journeyman songwriter and stringbender has known.

Whether he’s headlining his own dates, sitting in with heavyweight artists like The Allman Brothers, Robert Cray and Koko Taylor, or releasing a dozen critically lauded albums on such esteemed blues labels as Alligator Records and Telarc, Ellis is the real deal: a solid sender who’s based his life around writing, playing, recording and delivering his own stinging, combustible take on hard, guitar-based Southern R & B. Just don’t limit him as an artist by pigeonholing him into one narrow genre.

“To be perfectly honest,” he says candidly, “I consider myself to be more of a blues-rock act than a straight-up blues act.”

When asked if he’s ever considered shifting his focus even further from blues into the rock world, his answer essentially renders the question moot.

“The style of guitar that I play fits in equally well with Buddy Guy or Widespread Panic, two acts that I have played with quite often. ‘Nuff said.”

And therein lies the unique appeal and welcome dichotomy of Tinsley Ellis: he’s equally at home alongside one of

the finest and most influential “straightup” blues guitarists who’s ever lived, as well as among jam-band royalty, whipping out extemporaneous solos and counterpoints that mesh relatively seamlessly with that Athens group’s organic, free-range improv-rock.

Crowned by one magazine as “the most significant blues artist to emerge from Atlanta since Blind Willie McTell,” (a hyperbolic mantle if there ever was one, yet an arguably accurate assessment), and compared in print to the likes of Clapton and Santana, Ellis found himself warmly welcomed by Savannah music lovers from the start of his solo career in the late ‘80s, and earlier, as lead guitarist in the popular regional bar band The Heartfixers.

“My most memorable shows in Savannah were at the Night Flight Café on River Street in the early ‘80s,” he recalls wistfully. “The Heartfixers shows I did there with ‘Chicago’ Bob Nelson, John Hammond and/or Nappy Brown stand out as some of the best blues music I’ve ever been a part of. It was a really magical time for me. I was in my early twenties, making a name for myself in the music industry and partying my ass off, all at the same time!”

His upcoming gig at Live Wire Music Hall (a brand-new, upstart venue which claims the widest range of both

original and cover acts in town) finds Ellis playing only a few doors down from the sorely-missed Night Flight’s former location. It’s his first local show since headlining the Roundhouse Blues & BBQ fest years ago.

He’s supporting his latest Alligator CD, Moment of Truth, a slashing collection of icy guitar licks, snarling vocals and in-the-pocket grooves that many are calling his finest work to date.

That comes on the heels of his highly successful “best-of ” concert disc, Live — Highwayman. Ellis says his setlist this weekend will include every song from that live CD, tracks from his latest, and new, as yet unreleased tunes.

And, although Live Wire (whose owners need to pack the house for this pricey booking) is smaller than many of the clubs he regularly plays, the bluesman says the close quarters won’t throw him at all.

“My eyes are closed most of the time while I’m playing, so I’m often unaware of the size of the venue,” he says with a smile.

The wonder of Yu

Japanese piano virtuoso Yu Kosuge plays Friday

Tokyo-born Yu Kosuge gave her first piano recitals at age nine, and by ten was studying under some of the finest instructors in Germany and Austria.

Her pianissimo technique was described by one effusive critic as “the moment when the tip of an angel’s wing touches one’s cheek,” and she has found international fame through consistently dazzling performances.

The charming musician is also a successful author, having published a humorous, self-effacing memoir in late 2005. We spoke a few days before she was set to leave Japan for a ten-day U.S. tour that stops at our own Savannah Music Festival. The full interview can be found at www.connectsavannah.com.

I’m always curious if musicians who got a very early start feel regret at spending all those hours on rehearsal. Did such dedication cause you to miss out on important childhood experiences?

Yu Kosuge: Oh, my goodness. People tend to think that those like me, who started their career early, grew up in a white capsule with nothing but a black piano and practiced 24 hours a day! We do experience puberty, hang out with friends or have fights, too. At age nine or ten, I was so into soccer that it occupied most of my thoughts, and I also wanted to be an astronaut. I am very thankful I started very early, because performing on stage isn’t at all an easy thing psychologically.

Did you choose the piano for yourself or did your parents choose it for you?

Yu Kosuge: I didn’t have a particular interest in piano at first. Mostly, I liked to listen to orchestras and those pieces where I could imagine things as a child — like Peter and The Wolf or Peer Gynt.

I still remember my parents’ LPs. I enjoyed putting the needle on the vinyl.

My mum taught piano at home, and I was very keen to get as much attention as her pupils. I think that is why I first asked her to teach me.

Critics praise your gentle touch. Is that something that comes naturally to you, or have you made a specific effort to emphasize a wide dynamic range?

Yu Kosuge: I do think a lot about my touch. I want to create many additional ranges between piano and pianissimo.

And in pianissimo, there are millions of colors!

Do you have any favorites styles of music which some might find surprising?

Yu Kosuge: I love to dance, I take Salsa lessons. So, I love Salsa music, and also Tango. I could listen to (Tango pioneer Astor) Piazzolla all day long. I sometimes listen to hip-hop. Xzibit’s my favorite hip-hop artist.

Finding the jazz world’s ‘common thread’

Pianist Marcus Roberts once more graces the SMF

Did your family at all resist this?

One of the most gifted and highly regarded stride and jazz pianists of his generation, Marcus Roberts made a name for himself at a relatively young age by reinterpreting the works of Monk, Morton, Gershwin and Ellington.

Blind since childhood, he nonetheless has carefully studied the techniques and repertoire of the giants who came before him, and gone on to both preserve the history of jazz piano as well as revitalize and enthusiastically promote the genre through his own performances.

In addition to taking part in the 2008 SMF’s Swing Central High School Jazz Band Competition, Roberts is one of the four stellar keyboardists featured in this Wednesday’s “Piano Showdown” concert, and on Friday, his trio —abetted by Ga.’s own Marcus Printup on trumpet— joins

pianist Eric Reed’s quartet for three sets of “West Coast Jazz Meets Southern Swing” at the Charles H. Morris Center.

What first led you to the piano?

Marcus Roberts: Church. I was selftaught from age eight, and around ten, I started performing there every Sunday. I got into jazz around age twelve because of a radio program I stumbled onto

while looking for an All-Star baseball game! Instead, I found a show playing Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman with Lionel Hampton, just a nice range of ‘20s and ‘30s jazz. I was intrigued with the sounds I heard and immediately started trying to figure them out on the piano. I’m still trying to figure them out! (laughs)

Marcus Roberts: My parents were totally encouraging. As a matter of fact, playing in church put me in contact with the basic point of music, which is communicating directly to people in an interactive way. After hearing that in the church, I have continued to search for it in every style I have ever attempted, whether it’s Beethoven, Billie Holiday or Latin music.

How would you best contrast West Coast jazz and Southern swing?

Marcus Roberts: There was a time when West Coast jazz was thought to be a little more laid back, but I don’t really buy into that. This show is two different band’s views of jazz. The beauty is they’ll be different, but with a common thread. I’m curious to see how each band articulates the vocabulary we all use.We now basically live in a global society and the re-

gional differences are not as pronounced.

Eric Reed and his group are all completely soulful, fantastic musicians. I wouldn’t argue that Southern people somehow play with more soul than West Coast folks. Bonnaroo to Beijing

Abigail Washburn, Béla Fleck & The Sparrow Quartet break the string-band mold

Led by multicultural tunesmith and banjoist Abigail Washburn, the scandalously talented Sparrow Quartet —featuring cellist Ben Sollee, Grammynominated fiddler Casey Driessen, and banjo icon Béla Fleck— is not only on the vanguard of acoustic string music, but an innovative experiment in bridging numerous stylistic divides.

Washburn, who fell into the music industry after drifting away from a future in international law, is fluent in Chinese and an interest in the history, politics and culture of that country.

In fact, some of her songs are written and sung in Chinese, and incorporate elements of both Old-Time Americana and traditional Chinese folk music.

It’s an approach related to but distinctly different from Uncle Earl, the other acoustic combo she’s known for.

It’s that unique pairing of Eastern and Western culture that led the quartet in late 2007 to become the first U.S. musicians to tour Tibet on a governmentsponsored cultural mission.

Over the next several months, The Sparrow Quartet will play more than 100 live dates everywhere from Bonnaroo and MerleFest to the Summer Olympics in Beijing. To read my complete interview with Washburn, go to www.connectsavannah.com.

Bluegrass and Appalachian music has a small but rabid following in Asia. Why? Abigail Washburn: Generally speaking, the Japanese bluegrass craze was in the late ‘80s and there remains a small cult

following there now. There has been no such thing in China so far as I can find.

But, the Chinese are excited by cultural exchange events, whatever they may be.

What is the most compelling thing you took away from your tour of Tibet, and how does that impact your take on the violence now engulfing that region?

Abigail Washburn: Nothing from that tour brings me peace about the current unrest or the undercurrent of oppression and sadness I felt while I was there.

The Potala Palace was the most obvious sign of the times. It’s one of the greatest “spiritual houses” in modern times, and now it is simply a tourist attraction in the hands of the local Chinese government.

This band is packed with standout musicians, yet it retains your name. Do you call the shots?

Abigail Washburn: Although I generally chose —and in most cases wrote the largest portion of— the songs, The Sparrow Quartet is a collaboration. On this new LP, we expected no less than each person’s highest musical contribution to each song. Hopefully you can tell. We worked really hard!

There is no ambiguity or poetic metaphor in the title of this exhibition. It means exactly what it says. Titus Kaphar does his paintings and then, literally, undoes them. He creates parodies of European and American history paintings of the 17th century through the 19th century, and then proceeds to destroy them by cutting, crumpling and partially erasing.

“Conversation Between Paintings, No. 1: Descending From the Cross to be Nourished at the Breast of Our Mother” is made up of two adjacent and stretched canvases. The one on the left is of a woman of African descent sitting in profile facing the painting on the right, which is of a full standing portrait of one of the United States’ founding fathers in 18th century military dress. This is not a copy of a particular portrait, but a composite of Washington, Jefferson and others. Kaphar does not copy but creates works that quote the style and dress of the historical period. In this work, Kaphar has carefully cut around the outline of the male portrait, so that the figure falls out of the canvas to land in the lap of the woman in the adjacent painting. Her arm has been cut so that it embraces the fallen figure. Through the now empty figure-shaped hole he has left behind him, the intersection of the wooden stretcher bars can be seen and read as the cross of the title.

This title raises various interpretations of the narrative. Does the reference to “Our Mother” refer to the African American’s descent from the union of the black slave woman and the white slave owner; or perhaps “Our Mother” refer to everyone’s mother, as recent archaeological research has informed us that all humanity can be traced back to the same few African mothers? And

which a small painting titled “Kindling” can be seen on the far wall. This painting depicts a white man in 17th century dress standing by a fireplace. Kaphar has cut the figure out of the canvas so that it appears to be falling head first into the fire.

Although cutting figures out of the canvas or removing the canvas from the stretchers and crumpling it are the usual methods of “undoing” painting that Kaphar uses, there are two works here that employ other destructions. “Othello,” is a portrait of an African American male that can be detected under a partial coating of whitewash. In another work, a small head and shoulders of a woman wearing an Elizabethan collar is fixed to the top of a vast steel tank encased in black tar. The woman appears to be upper-class and white, but the long, strange title, “I Still

Don’t Know How or Why it Ended Like This, But It Began When One of the Older Women Called her Blackness into Question”, suggests another reading.

This is an art about painting, or rather, about raising questions about painting: What do you do with a career in painting when painting is dead? What would happen if a figure stepped out of a painting and entered another? How many ways can a rectangular painting format be deconstructed? How can you present post-colonial critiques of Western culture as subject matter in painting? This is the discourse of graduate painting departments and Kaphar is a recent graduate with an M.F.A. from Yale. But despite the dominance of the ideological theme of racial critique in Kaphar’s work, it is the act of destroying painting that is the true content of the

work.

The end of art has been on the agenda for a long time. And it became the central point of the 20th century avant-garde groupings. What people often forget is that it is not the end of creativity that the avant-garde, desired, but the end of a specialized category of art with a capital “A”.

For the avant-garde, art was to be made by all, and all daily life was to be made over to total art. But these conditions have not so far arrived and, meanwhile, artists with careers in painting seem to be condemned to the repeated re-enactment of painting’s demise.

with accompanying kneeler, and where the altar would be, a large canvas has fallen in a crumpled heap. It is difficult to see exactly what the painting depicts as it is so mangled, but it appears to be a European painting of the Crucifixion. Are we here to mourn the end of painting – or the end of religion?

“George, George, George” is a very large, freestanding painting mounted in the center of the gallery, depicting George Washington being rowed across an icebound river by an African-American who has been cropped by the left side of the canvas so that only his arms and hands on the oars are visible. The figure of Washington, who stands regally and dominates the entire picture plane, has been cut out, inverted and reapplied to the canvas upside down, leaving areas of space through

â&#x20AC;&#x153;The way the play is written is very natural and basic,â&#x20AC;? says Megan Truillio, who is directing a production of Our Town at Savannah Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Theatre â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s never really done with a set. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are invisible props. the outline of houses, the outline of windows,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If somebody is feeding chickens or watering flowers, there are no real chickens, no real flowers.â&#x20AC;?

The production is quite a departure for the Savannah Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Theatre. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are no big bright colors and magical animals,â&#x20AC;? Truillio says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thornton Wilder wanted to get the message across that there are things in life, everyday things, that we take for granted. We go through life and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t notice things like colors, the way our mother has her hair, the way father looks, what breakfast they made for us as children, and before you know it, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s over. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The play has three acts,â&#x20AC;? Truillio says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The first act is youth and childhood and growing up. The second is love and marriage. The third act is death. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have all these people we havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seen in the first and second acts who have died. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re talking about life and regret so many things they took for granted.â&#x20AC;?

The main characters are George Gibbs and Emily Webb, who grow up together and get married. Emily dies in childbirth, but gets to go back and relive one day of her life. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The way Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve decided to do the show is different from most productions,â&#x20AC;?

Truillio says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When she goes back to life, everything will be in color and the colors are brighter, there is actual bacon on an actual plate.â&#x20AC;?

The play is probably not for younger children because theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not going to understand it, Truillio says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s for middle school and up just because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not very pretty to look at,â&#x20AC;? she says.

The actors are high school students enrolled in the Savannah Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Theatre Performance Ensemble. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an audition-only group, kind of the cream of the crop,â&#x20AC;? Truillio says.

The play is thought-provoking, Truillio says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You learn a lot of yourself,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very self-reflective. Even as I watch, I think, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;What are things I take for granted? What are the moments Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m supposed to remember? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a sad play and a powerful message for high school students,â&#x20AC;? Truillio says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life -- itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what happens.â&#x20AC;?

Is it possible to have too much fun doing community theater? A happy group of Tybee Islanders is trying to find out. The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is being presented by the Tybee Arts Association, and everyone involved is having a blast.

“It’s a thigh-slapping, foot-stomping, s--t-kicking, PG-rated show,” director Mel Gordon says. “It’s a fun show.

“The Broadway show is a little different from the movie version,” he says. “The show itself is a kind of South Georgia thing.

“We’ve got a lot of great women in it,” Gordon says. “And Tybee is noted as being a little wacky.”

The group has done a musical before, and had fun with that one, too. “We did South Pacific,” Gordon says. “Everyone said it was time to do a musical again.”

Whorehouse will be presented April 4, 5 and 6, hopefully on the Tybee pier.

“When we did South Pacific, the threat of a hurricane stopped us,” Gordon says.

“You never know what will happen.”

Gordon is a bit worried about the weather. “You can’t imagine what it’s like to do a sound system in the wind,” he says.

“We booked the pier months ahead,” Gordon says. “It was the only way we could find three days in a row.”

Even on Tybee, there are some naysayers when it comes to the musical’s

subject matter. “We have do-gooders coming in and trying to change things,” Gordon says.

“One thing we had a little problem with was the ‘God damn this’ and the ‘God damn that’ that the sheriff says,” he says. “That’s the way men talk.”

When the show was announced, a lot of people wanted to get involved. “We have a cast of 60-plus,” Gordon says.

“The funny thing is, when you say you’re looking for whores, women fall out of the aisles,” he says. “It’s mainly the older women, who did want to be whores and didn’t get the chance to do it.

“I’d ask, ‘You want to be one of the whores in the show?’ and they’d say, ‘Oh, yeah! That would be fun!,’” Gordon says. “It’s not hard getting whores on Tybee.”

With such a big cast, the roles range from leads to extras. “We have great leads, which is amazing in a community like this,” Gordon says.

“The guy who plays the sheriff could be on Broadway, no joke,” he says.

“Mona the madam is played by the mayor’s wife.

“We have what I call house whores -- they don’t sing, they don’t dance, but they look good,” Gordon says. “The bottom line is that we’ve got a mix of people who might otherwise never have met who are now hugging and kissing and falling all over each other.

“These guys do a great job,” he says.

“What’s happened is we don’t have paid people. Professional actors do it for a living, so they come in for rehearsal, continues on page 28

and when it’s over, they hurry home.

“These folks come in and have a good time. When rehearsal is over, they’re ready to sing and dance some more.”

In addition to a stellar cast, the musical has an impressive two-story set. “We had to build the set outside because it’s so big, then we’ll move it to the pier,” Gordon says.

The original Broadway production opened on June 19, 1978. In 1982, a feature film was released that starred Burt Reynolds as Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd and Dolly Parton as Miss Mona Stangley, the whorehouse madam.

Set in the late 1970s, Whorehouse is the story of a brothel that has been operating outside of fictional Gilbert, Texas, for more than a century. And with the blessing of local law enforcement.

A crusading television reporter named Melvin P. Thorpe finds out about the brothel and decides to expose it. The ensuing publicity causes political ramifications and the brothel is closed down.

The story is based on an actual place that was located outside LaGrange, Texas. Many of the characters are based on real people.

“The original Chicken Ranch is still in operation,” Gordon says. “It’s moved to Nevada, about 20 minutes outside Las Vegas. They don’t take chickens any more, though, just money.”

Having such a large cast did pose some problems. “It’s a challenge in the sense of trying to find the time,” Gordon says. “These people work. When you schedule rehearsal, someone is going to miss it.

“We had a bout with the flu. I think everyone got it,” he says. “Overall, everyone is doing very good, although some are more dedicated than others.”

Gordon is the perfect director for the production. “I started out as a music major at the University of Georgia,” he says. “I used to do summer stock in Atlanta, then worked a couple of years in New York.

“I was drafted during the Vietnam era, then came back to New York. I went to California for a while, but couldn’t make a living at it.

“I married and had four daughters,” Gordon says. “I was still doing summer stock here and there, and I did a show in Savannah back in the 70s, Annie Get Your Gun.” After a divorce, Gordon went back to California, where he once played the role of Ed Earl. “I did that particular show in Oxnard,” he says.

“I’ve directed some and been in quite a few shows,” Gordon says. “I’m a singer/actor with a big, strong, loud voice.”

Gordon came back to Georgia to visit a friend on Tybee Island, where he met

his current wife. They own the Atlantis Inn, a hotel with themed rooms.

A portion of the proceeds from Whorehouse will used for the renovation of the Old Post Theatre. “The Post Theatre is in my heart and I want to see it preserved,” Gordon says.

Tom Kurtz plays the side-stepping Texas governor. “He’s a typical politician who doesn’t want to make a commitment on a controversial issue,” Kurtz says. “He’s kind of caught between a rock and hard place with a group of people who want the Chicken Ranch to be closed because they feel it’s an immoral institution. Then there are those who want to make it a national monument.

Kurtz has been in eight productions over the past four years after moving to Savannah. “I’ve been in about six SCAD films and an ABC pilot,” he says.

“I haven’t sung and danced in any production,” Kurtz says. “I’ve done drama and comic roles, and I’ve been in musicals but haven’t had to sing a solo.”

Eddie Wilson is the musical director for the show. He’s impressed by the work done by the cast.

“It’s a large number of very excited friends,” Wilson says. “They did do their homework. By the time I first heard them at the first rehearsal I attended, they already knew 80 percent of the show.”

Wilson came to Savannah five years ago and is the musical director for the Savannah Theatre. He also produces Oh, Savannah, a Johnny Mercer show.

Working on the production is certainly different from Wilson’s regular job. “The number one thing is the fact that these people could choose to do anything they want with their time, and they choose to do this,” he says.

“At the Savannah Theatre, this is just the thing we do. We’re identified by it, which creates an intensely professional show. On the island, you look within your cast for your fun and approval, and in the theater, you have to look to your audience. My partners at Savannah Theatre take for granted a certain level of professionalism and talent,” Wilson says.

“On Tybee, everyone has a day job and at night becomes a character. It’s always a wonderful roller coaster ride to see what they have under their sleeves.”

Leatherheads

Football may be a rough-and-tumble sport, but Leatherheads is handled by director and star George Clooney with the delicacy one extends toward an antique vase. Working from a script by acclaimed sports writers Duncan Brantley and Rick Reilly, Clooney offers an occasionally wistful look at the early days of professional football, when its popularity was nil and it was viewed as college football’s deformed and ignored stepbrother.

The year is 1925, and Dodge Connolly (Clooney) has managed to scrape together a career as a football player, assembling his motley crew to travel all over the country to play games in which attendance is anemic, rules are nonexistent, and a player is as likely to throw a punch as catch the pigskin. Just as it appears the entire league will have to fold, Dodge comes up with a brainstorm. Why not convince Carter “The Bullet” Rutherford (John Krasinski), the nation’s most popular college football star, to put his studies on hold and join the pro ranks? Carter agrees just about the time that the Chicago daily has elected to send one of its best reporters, tough-talking Lexie Littleton (Renee Zellweger), to determine the authenticity of Carter’s WWI exploits. Gaining access to the team, Lexie uses her feminine wiles to cozy up to Carter, all the while engaging in verbal jousts with Dodge. Clooney is an unabashed lover of classic screwball comedies from Hollywood’s Golden Era, and he’s gone on record stating that his influences for Leatherheads included such great directors as Howard Hawks and George Cukor. His

greatest (unacknowledged) influences, however, stem from more recent times, as it’s difficult to watch this film without being reminded of the pair of pictures he made with Joel and Ethan Coen. Perennially growing in stature as an actor and director, it’s easy to envision Clooney studying the Coens’ M.O. while perched on their sets, since Leatherheads sports the same burnished period look as O Brother, Where Art Thou? and the same screwball comedy stylings as the underrated Intolerable Cruelty. Clooney is on his game as the aging brawler who’s disheartened by the rigid direction the sport starts to take, but the likable Krasinski often gets defeated by the restrictions of his colorless part. And as Lexie, Zellweger delivers the script’s zingers with aplomb, even if she isn’t outwardly quite as brash or brassy as the role requires. Leatherheads is full of visual sight gags, whether the humor derives from elaborate setups (the final football game is full of nicely choreographed physical comedy) or merely from repeating the same shot for maximum potency (dig the guy in the swimming pool). continues on page 34

Stop-Loss Sign of the Times, Part I: While accepting his Oscar in 2003, Michael Moore is loudly booed for criticizing Bush’s “fictitious” war in Iraq. Sign of the Times, Part II: During last week’s advance screening of the new Iraq War drama Stop-Loss, audience members clap and cheer when Ryan Phillippe’s character spits out, “Fuck the president!” As far as cinema is concerned, we’re probably still several years away from the definitive Iraq War flick.

Stop-Loss at least comes closer than most of the others: Rather than getting buried in ham-fisted armchair liberalism (like Lions for Lambs and Rendition), it carefully tries to include something for everyone on both sides of the war divide. Yet while this approach is a thoughtful one, it can also be a dangerous one, as evidenced by late-inning occurrences that spit in the face of anyone who has ever taken a stand on moral grounds. Helming her first film since 1999’s Boys Don’t Cry, director Kimberly Peirce (co-scripting with Mark Richard) centers her tale on three Texas boys who all served together in Iraq and have returned to their hometown: Brandon King (Phillippe), a natural born leader and the most intelligent of the three; Steve Shriver (Channing Tatum), a jingoistic grunt prone to repeating canned rhetoric like, “We kill them in Iraq so we don’t have to kill them here in Texas!”; and Tommy Burgess (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), the hard-drinking soldier who lost his best friend in the conflict. Having served plenty of time overseas, Brandon expects to settle down stateside, so he’s understandably upset when Bush’s “stop-loss” policy -- basically, a backdoor draft -- requires him to head back to Iraq yet again. Refusing direct orders, Brandon instead goes AWOL, a decision that irrevocably affects both Steve and Tommy. Despite its serious intentions, Stop-Loss often plays like a softer version of The Deer Hunter, and, without revealing too much, its about-face message ultimately isn’t “Fuck the president” as much as it’s “Fuck yourself” -- a dispiriting message no matter how it’s sliced.

tion as an indie goddess; Rachel McAdams quickly (and deservedly) gained her footing as one of Hollywood’s best young actresses; and Adaptation Oscar winner Chris Cooper is everyone’s idea of an exemplary character actor. Yet director-writer Ira Sachs (adapting John Bingham’s book Five Roundabouts to Heaven with co-scripter Oren Moverman) has assembled the quartet for a stifling domestic drama that promises mystery and intrigue yet only succeeds in wasting the talents of these exceptional actors. Set in 1949, this casts Cooper as Harry Allen, a pent-up businessman who seeks romance in a marriage in which his wife Pat (Clarkson, faring best of the four) wants only sex. Harry falls in love with a war widow named Kay (McAdams), and he tells his best friend Richard (Brosnan) that he plans to leave Pat and settle down with the fragile and much younger woman. What Harry doesn’t tell Richard is that, because he can’t bear the thought of Pat suffering after he leaves her (since he’s sure she’ll be devastated), he plans to murder her; what Richard doesn’t tell Harry is that, from the moment he saw her, he’s been plotting to steal Kay away from his longtime chum. Clarkson’s presence brings to mind Todd Haynes’ superb Far From Heaven (in which she had a supporting role), and one suspects that, like Haynes, Sachs was hoping to present an homage to the Douglas Sirk melodramas of the 1950s. Then again, it’s impossible not to notice that McAdams’ Kay is dolled up exactly like Kim Novak in Vertigo, so it’s possible Sachs was shooting for Hitchcock comparisons. Either way, he falls woefully short, since Married Life lacks any semblance of genuine emotion, leaves out even one iota of sweat-inducing suspense, and collapses under the weight of an ending that not only isn’t earned but contradicts its own key revelation.

It’s best to ignore these scenes from a marriage; stick with Ingmar Bergman instead.

Snow Angels Until The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford (in which he appeared as Charley Ford), I didn’t think it was possible for Sam Rockwell to play a role in which his actorly tics and mannerisms didn’t get in the way of creating a flesh-and-blood person. Watching him in projects as diverse as The Green Mile and Matchstick Men, he doesn’t seem to care whether his look-Ma-I’m-acting! brand of emoting meshes with the rest of the project or not. by Stewart O’Nan, this ensemble piece focuses on the lives of several members of a small American community, and specifically on the circumstances (mostly tragic) that bind them together. The central plotline deals with the efforts of town beauty Annie (Kate Beckinsale), wasting away as a waitress at a Chinese restaurant, to keep her seemingly unstable husband Glenn (Rockwell) at bay, even if it means cheating him out of quality time with their young daughter Tara (Grace Hudson). The usual cliches apply here: Annie’s carrying on an affair with the lunkheaded husband (Nicky Katt) of her best friend (Amy Sedaris); Glenn turns to God and to the bottle (not necessarily in that order) in an effort to quell his demons; and the spats between Annie and Glenn lead to an obvious conclusion that’s made even more painfully obvious by the casting of jitterbug Rockwell. The secondary storyline concerns high school student Arthur (Michael Angarano) and the budding romance he experiences with a quirky classmate (Juno’s Olivia Thirlby), a balm to soothe the pain of witnessing his parents’ messy split. These sections of the film work primarily because of the charming and natural performance by Angarano, a necessary counterpoint to Rockwell’s patented grandstanding.

21 Loosely adapted from Ben Mezrich’s factbased bestseller Bringing Down the House, 21 is an entertaining and fast-paced film that occasionally manages to make the act of counting cards seem as exciting as this past winter’s Super Bowl -- and as perilous as climbing Mount Everest with both eyes closed.

Jim Sturgess, fresh off his starring role as Jude in Across the Universe (as well as a supporting turn in The Other Boleyn Girl), plays Ben Campbell, a brilliant MIT student who needs some serious dough in order to be able to afford a stint at Harvard. His intelligence catches the eye of Micky Rosa (Kevin Spacey), a shrewd professor whose extracurricular activity is training a hand-picked group of students in the art of counting cards at the blackjack table. He welcomes Ben to a gang that already includes two guys (Aaron Yoo and Jacob Pitts) and two girls (Kate Bosworth and Liza Lapira), and together they set off on weekly excursions to Las Vegas to clean up. Drillbit Taylor As the trio of dweebs who find themselves the perpetual targets of high school bullies, lanky Nate Hartley, rotund Troy Gentile and spastic David Dorfman turn in natural, likable performances that go a long way toward making this dopey comedy even remotely watchable. Even so, the three are basically carbon copies of Superbad’s lanky Michael Cera, rotund Jonah Hill and spastic Christopher Mintz-Plasse -- hardly a surprise, given that both films were produced by Judd Apatow and co-written by Seth Rogen. Both movies largely deal with three nerds trying to appear cool to their fellow students; the added attraction here is the character of Drillbit Taylor (Owen Wilson), a homeless man who passes himself off as a bodyguard in order to earn some money protecting the undersized freshmen from the vicious seniors (Alex Frost and Josh Peck) who terrorize them at every turn. An assembly-line comedy in virtually every facet -- you can set your watch by the moment when the formerly aloof Drillbit is visibly moved by a charitable act on the part of one of the kids -- this dispiriting attempt at corralling laughs has little to offer anyone except die-hard Owen Wilson fans, and even those devotees might feel dejected after watching this charming if one-note actor spinning his wheels in such a tiresome character type.

Run, Fat Boy, Run Run, Fat Boy, Run stars one of the two male leads (Simon Pegg) from Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, and, no, it isn’t the fat one.

Instead, it’s the average-sized one, immediately nullifying this movie’s title. Now if only someone had nullified this picture’s very existence, we’d have one less bomb taking up valuable multiplex space. Instead, we’re stuck with a wretched comedy whose greatest claim to, uh, fame is that it marks the directorial debut of Friends co-star David Schwimmer.

But with friends like Schwimmer, who needs enemies? Along with writers Michael Ian Black and Pegg, Schwimmer has served up a broad, crass and spectacularly unfunny piece about a sad sack who abandoned his pregnant fiancee at the altar on their wedding day. Five years later, Dennis (Pegg) continues to regret the cowardice he displayed on that day, but the only reason Libby (Thandie Newton) hasn’t shut him out of her life completely is because she believes their child Jake (Matthew Fenton) should have a relationship with his father.

Dennis hopes to somehow win back Libby, but time is running o ut since she’s becoming more heavily involved with a successful businessman named Whit (Hank Azaria). The lazy and physically unfit Dennis is no match for the industrious and health-conscious Whit, but that doesn’t prevent him from entering a 28-mile marathon in an effort to gain back Libby’s love and respect.

It’s a thin premise undermined by rampant stupidity at every turn, from the lazy decision to turn Whit into a paper villain (so audiences won’t have to strain their brains deciding who’s better for Libby) to the infantile brand of comedy that appears at alarming intervals right up to the very end (literally; the final shot in the movie is a close-up of a flabby bare bottom).

Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who! In Horton’s world, “a person’s a person, no matter how small,” but in our world, a mediocre movie’s a mediocre movie, no matter how overhyped, overblown and overbearing.

There’s a reason that the 1966 TV version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas! remains the best Seuss on film, and that’s because its 26minute length comes closest to approximating the brief reading time of one of the good doctor’s delightful books. But when stretched out to 90 minutes, a great deal of padding is needed, thereby maximizing the chances of screwing up the source material. That’s definitely the case here, since the basic story -- Horton the happy-go-lucky elephant finds himself ridiculed by the other jungle denizens when he insists that a speck on a flower contains an entire civilization (the residents of Whoville) -- retains its humanist (better make that anthropomorphic) appeal. But the additions to the original content are misguided, beginning with a decidedly non-Seussian reference to “poop” and ending with an atrocious Pokemon-inspired sequence that must be seen to be disbelieved.

The Bank Job

The Bank Job bills itself as being based on a true story, but given cinema’s propensity for fudging details every which way, that’s not a declaration that I’d be willing to take to the bank myself. But veracity be damned: Even if every detail of this heist flick was drenched in fiction, it doesn’t change the fact that it’s one compelling package. The film is set in 1971, which seems right, since one could easily picture the British heavyhitters of that era (Michael Caine, Ian Bannen, Harry Andrews, etc.) appearing in a film just like this one (Caine, in fact, did headline a heist flick during this period, 1969’s The Italian Job). And inhabiting the film’s central role is Jason Statham, who thanks to a series of action films has become the current poster boy for British roughhousing. The Bank Job gives his character, Terry Leather, a chance to use his brains more than his brawn, and this allows Statham a bit more vulnerability than usual -- his character even has a wife and two daughters, a break from the image of the emotionless lone warrior.

Terry is approached by a former acquaintance (Saffron Burrows) to pull off a robbery at a Lloyds Bank that will benefit them both. She has her own reasons beyond monetary gain for making this proposal, and Terry senses that rather quickly. But he and his crew go for

it anyway, a decision that involves them in a labyrinthine scandal that not only reaches into the upper echelons of government but also snares the British royal family as well.

Brimming with satisfying twists and populated with colorful characters, this represents a Job well done.

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day Romantic without being cynical, witty without being puerile, and blessed by two divine performances from Frances McDormand and Amy Adams. McDormand plays the title character, a British maid in 1939 London who all too suddenly finds herself unemployed.

Desperate to remain off the streets, she dupes her way into the position of social secretary to American actress Delysia Lafosse (Adams), a dim but sweet-natured starlet whose biggest problem seems to be choosing between two playboys (Tom Payne and Mark Strong) who can advance her career and a struggling pianist (Lee Pace) who truly loves her. Yeah, I know: It’s a no-brainer ascertaining who gets her hand by the fadeout. Yet despite Adams’ screwball-style performance -- as enchanting as her turn in Enchanted -- the film’s main source of delight doesn’t rest with Delysia’s affairs of the heart but with Miss Pettigrew’s. A prim woman who lost her beloved during the First World War, Miss Pettigrew has long given up on any chance at romance. That a potential suitor comes along in the form of a successful clothing designer (Ciaran Hinds) seems just right, not only by the demands of the storyline but by the demands of our own hearts. McDormand sells her character with utter conviction.

10,000 B.C. Playing like a cross between Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto and the fanboy fave 300, this emptyheaded spectacle from Stargate director Roland Emmerich centers on a young man who, when it comes to heroes leading their people out of the darkness, emerges as a towering

figure worthy of standing alongside Moses, William “Braveheart” Wallace and Michael Moore. Steven Strait plays this warrior, whose name is D’Leh (not to be confused with Homer Simpson’s “D’Oh!”) and whose bland, prettyboy countenance makes him a precursor to Malibu Ken. When he’s not busy being tutored by his adoptive father Tic’Tic (Cliff Curtis), D’Leh passes the time by flirting with his one true love, Evolet (blank slate Camilla Belle).

Evolet has these piercing blue eyes, but even more noticeable throughout the film is the makeup which surrounds them, and which never gets smeared even after she’s been shedding copious tears. Who knew Maybelline existed as far back as 10,000 B.C.?

The Other Boleyn Girl An often fascinating blend of fact, rumor and outright fabrication, The Other Boleyn Girl feels like an Oscar-bait title that somehow got its DNA mixed up with a daytime soap opera.

Based on Philippa Gregory’s controversial novel, this tracks the political intrigue and bedroom shenanigans which sprang from the attempts of the Boleyn family to get in the good graces of King Henry VIII (Eric Bana). Prodded on by the most venal member of the clan, the scheming Duke of Norfolk (The Reaping’s David Morrissey, as uninteresting as always), the quivering Sir Thomas Boleyn (Mark Rylance) agrees to offer his strong-willed daughter Anne (Natalie Portman) to the king as replacement for his majesty’s current wife Catherine (Ana Torent), who has been unable to produce a male heir. But after Anne quickly falls out of Henry’s favor, the men serve up Anne’s demure sister Mary (Scarlett Johansson) instead; a torrid love affair takes place, but when that begins to cool thanks to Henry’s growing disinterest, Anne is brought back onto the scene. If Charles Laughton (winning an Oscar for 1933’s The Private Life of Henry VIII) was the chunkiest Henry VIII ever put on film, then Bana might be the hunkiest, but it’s hardly a desirable tradeoff, given the actor’s drowsy performance.

they’re operating under the wire, their winning ways -- not to mention squabbles from within -- catch the eye of Cole Williams (Laurence Fishburne), an old-school casino enforcer whose preferred MO is taking cheaters to a back room and beating them to a bloody pulp.

The movie works best during its first act, when the fascinating con game is explained to Ben (and to us), and during its second act, when Ben feels his life spiraling out of control as he makes a series of mistakes that could cost him everything. Scripters Peter Steinfeld and Allan Loeb only really lose control during the third act, when an important plot point too lumpy to swallow leads to a series of increasingly unbelievable developments. Yet even during this convoluted section, director Robert Luketic and a perfectly cast Spacey insure that this stylish film maintains a winning hand.

In the film *Fight Club,* the character played by Brad Pitt storms into a convenience store with a gun, then herds the clerk out back and threatens to execute him. While the poor man quivers in terror, Pitt asks him questions about himself, extracting the confession that he had once wanted to be a veterinarian but had dropped out of school. After a few minutes, Pitt frees the clerk without harming him, but says that unless he takes steps to return to veterinary school in the next six weeks, he will hunt him down and kill him. In my opinion, that’s an overly extreme way to motivate someone to do what’s good for him. I wish I could come up with a less shocking approach to coax you into resuming the quest for your deferred dreams, Aries. Can you think of anything?
