Taking taxes to school N

obody enjoys paying property taxes, especially those that seem to go up year after year. I know I don’t.

While it faces a host of obstacles — not least among them the energetic opposition of every school board in the state, including ours — there’s no doubt that Georgia House Speaker Glenn Richardson’s plan to do away with school property taxes (replacing them with an increased sales tax) has been well-received by a lot of rank-and-file citizens throughout the state.

I can’t tell you how many people I’ve heard say things like, “I don’t have kids, why should I pay taxes for the public schools?

Let the parents pay the extra money.”

Of course, by saying that, such people only prove that they need a little more schooling themselves.

Education isn’t just for parents and their children. It’s for the economy. It’s for quality of life. It’s for society.

It’s for civilization, people.

Educated citizens make the world around you and the people and institutions in it work better. Educated citizens make the other services you pay for flow your way more efficiently. Educated citizens make the crime rate around you go down.

In short, educated citizens make your quality of life better, whether or not you yourself have children in the public schools.

For those who still think Richardson’s plan is a good idea, try answering the following questions: How many people and businesses will move to Georgia if it becomes the only state in the region that won’t fully fund its schools? I’m not just talking about the “Creative Coast” types, but the Gulfstream engineers, the shipping executives, the people the Savannah River Landing would like to bring in at about a million a pop.

Ah, but those people all send their kids to private school anyway, you say. First off, that’s not true at all.

Secondly, do you really want a community with an even greater divide between the private schools and public schools than we already have now? All I can say to that is, I hope you really enjoy that gated community you live in.

And how about control issues? Do you trust Atlanta to properly allocate that sales

tax money they collect? You know, the same Atlanta that made sure the world’s largest aquarium is located there rather than, oh say, here on the coast?

How many tourists will come to Savannah if a dramatically increased sales tax makes every single thing they buy more expensive than in South Carolina or Florida?

The Charleston metro area already pulls in roughly five times the tourist revenue Savannah does. How much higher will that number go once word gets out that all goods and services in Savannah will cost maybe ten, fifteen percent more?

As for those of us with kids already in the system, how many parents will want to stick around and see how much worse the schools can get if their major source of funding is removed?

And finally, for us homeowners who are tired of paying property taxes, i.e., all of us, here’s a question: You’re tired of property taxes, sure, aren’t we all. But are you also tired of writing off that mortgage interest on your taxes?

Because Richardson’s plan would eliminate that fat deduction.

So how do you like it now?

Fortunately, local school boards, including Savannah/Chatham’s, are speaking out on the issue. As my story in this issue indicates, your local board is trying a proactive approach. Instead of just whining, they’re proposing a different kind of tax reform: ex-

tending the Stephens-Day homestead exemption, which has been a big success here, statewide. While not perfect, I think that’s a worthwhile suggestion.

Bottom line: To my mind, Richardson’s plan approaches sheer insanity.

Georgia is somewhat unique. We are the ninth most populous state in the union, with one of the healthiest economies — but we also have one of the nation’s worst education records.

Gee, what could possibly ruin that healthy economy? Maybe some guy who wants badly to be the next governor restructuring the tax system specifically to shortchange the public schools? Hey, what could possibly go wrong with that?

Let’s face it: Georgia’s economy is healthy, but hard times are ahead. No one knows for sure how long they’ll last, but everyone’s pretty sure they’re on the way.

Now is not the time to be fooling around with something as essential as funding for schools, especially by depending on a consumption tax, of all things.

If you want tax reform, fine — there are a lot of better, smaller ways to do that incrementally. They may not get a certain person elected governor, but that’s just too bad. w Jim is editor in chief of Connect Savannah.

When I agreed to talk with Mr. Reed, it was in the spirit of not only sharing information, but to put this issue in the proper perspective. individuals, bundled the mortgages into securities, and sold them to the secondary market for large fees without warning the buyers about the reduction in credit-worthiness of the mortgages.

So it’s a failure of the banking system and not of consumer education.

A responsible banking industry is necessary for the survival of capitalism. It is the intent of the banking industry to cheat that needs to be addressed, and not the ignorance of the borrower---because in a democracy the premise is that everybody will be treated fairly and equally.

Much, if not all of the deception by the industry occurred on the upper levels of the banking industry pyramid---at the Wall Street level, where the money is created, and from where it is siphoned to regional and local banks.

Why banks had to sell to sub primers.

Home prices are over-inflated with respect to household incomes. Today’s prices are much higher compared to household income than they have been in the past. That has stalled home sales because no one can afford them.

Much of the recent activity in the residential housing market has resulted from temporary speculation--- hope that property can be flipped for a profit in the short term. When the speculation stalled, credit dried up.

After the speculative wave collapsed, banks had to sell to subprime borrowers because that’s the only way they could create more liquidity in order to keep lending. The more such loans they could create, the more they could pass on to the secondary market.

Because you can’t force people to borrow, sub prime borrowers had to be enticed into the system with whatever incentives.

In no way was the lowering of the credit bar by mortgage banks meant to support the benevolent ideal of expanded home ownership. There is a limited supply of qualified mortgage customers, a market condition that enhanced the value of mortgage-backed securities to investors.

But this supply fluctuates with the economy. When wages increase and homeowners do well, their supply increases, and vice versa.

The banking industry tried to circumvent this common sense reality by pooling sub par mortgage applicants with questionable credit ratings in with those with good ratings, failing to warn investors in the secondary market, and pocketing the substantial fees generated by the new supply of mortgage customers The banking industry tried to turn a limited supply of qualified mortgage consumers into an unlimited supply, while turning a limited amount of money into an unlimited supply with the help of the Federal Reserve, thereby breaking the rules of sound economics, not to mention sound banking practices, and setting the economy up for a perfect storm of evaporating liquidity and falling home prices Patience and education are not the answers to our credit dilemma. violate sound economic principles---not to mention other laws---must be made to pay for their mistakes with their own capital.

Unless this happens, Americans will lose faith in the banking system, and our economic system will fail to exist.

“It does work, and we have been able to lower taxes and millage every year and still keep going with it, without hitting the homeowner any worse than we usually get hit as homeowners,” agreed Joe Buck.

Buck — a Republican as is Brady, Richardson, Gov. Sonny Perdue and most of the state’s elected leadership — says that by taking a proactive approach and getting in-

volved in tax reform now, the state’s public schools can realize dividends later.

“I’ve heard a lot of people in other districts saying, ‘we’ve got to have our property tax.’ But I’ve been in this a long time, and I keep telling them, when it goes into the legislature it’s gonna come out as something,” Buck said. “So we better start trying to live with or influence what they come up with.”

he Savannah Tree Foundation wants you. “We’re looking for people’s ideas about places that need trees,” Adrienn Mendonca, the foundation’s communications director, says.

Mendonca is looking for anyone who wants to improve community-owned spaces through planting trees. “Some of the tree canopy needs to be replaced,” she says. “There might be a place that needs more greenery. We really want to get the word out.”

The areas being sought should be private, governmental or nonprofit land in Chatham County.

The City of Savannah already has its own tree specialists, so the founPlanting in action dation is looking for spots outside the city. “The city has done such a good job, it’s hard to find places in Savannah that need trees,” Mendonca says.

The issue of planting trees has become more crucial. “It’s evident now more than ever that trees are an important part of the environment,” Mendonca says. “They help sequester carbon.

With global warming, we need to take better care of our trees.”

One of the main causes of global warming is carbon emissions. Trees take in carbon, and release oxygen. “Every time you plant a tree, you help the environment deal with toxic waste,” Mendonca says.

Trees also are traffic-calming influences, Mendonca says.

They encourage drivers to slow down and enjoy the scenery.

They also help absorb storm water. Areas that tend to flood can benefit from canopy trees.

When trees are properly placed, they can help with cooling and heating bills. They also provide shelter for local and migratory birds and other wildlife.

Preliminary research has indicated that students in grades K8 actually had a higher passing rate on state exams when there was a larger percentage of tree cover at their schools. “Children learn better in healthier environments, and trees are part of that equation,” Mendonca says.

When Mendonca was in college, she often stopped in Savannah. “It was halfway home from Chapel Hill,” she says.

“I would cruise around town and admire the live oak canopies,” Mendonca says. “I love this city. It’s so beautiful, which is one of the reasons why people relocate here.”

Mendonca took a job with the Savannah Tree Foundation, an organization that works to protect those very trees she once admired. While most of us take trees for granted, they do require protection and care to thrive.

“Natural attrition is a problem,” Mendonca says. “Like people, trees get old and die. Trees that aren’t cared for tend to die sooner.”

The Savannah Tree Foundation plants about 200 trees every year. At times, the public is asked to help plant them.

Usually, at least 50 trees are planted at a site. “But even if less than 20 trees are needed in an area, we’ll take it under consideration,” Mendonca says. “We’ll look at the areas where trees are needed and evaluate them on an individual basis.”

Dale Thorpe, a past president of the foundation, remains an enthusiastic volunteer.

“We do community volunteer tree plantings to teach people how to plant trees,” she says. “People enjoy it. They love to come out and help us plant trees. It’s a good way to reforest public lands.”

Savannah is famous for its urban forest. “We have an excellent city parks and trees program, but the county and other municipal areas do not,” Thorpe says. “The city has excellent crews that continually plant and maintain trees. That started in the late 1800s.

“The county and the municipalities haven’t built programs,” she says. “That’s where we’re focusing our efforts.”

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has set aside land in Chatham County that is prone to flooding. No one can live on those lands, and they can’t be developed, so many are just bare, empty lots.

“They must not be used for anything but flood control,” Thorpe says. “Trees enhance their ability to do this.

“We’ve put a lot of trees on FEMA properties,” Thorpe says.

“It changes them from grassy lots to eventually nice forested areas. We’ve done several of those, and it entirely changes the character of an empty lot.”

Development has taken a toll on Chatham County’s trees.

“On the Isle of Hope there are absolutely lovely trees, but when you take out the support system of other trees for housing, the trees that are left need attention,” Thorpe says.

“Someone will see a tree and think, ‘That’s a cool place to park,’ and the tree is impacted even more,” she says. “Care must be given to try to retain trees.” w Have a suggestion for the Savannah Tree Foundation? ‘Shouldn’t doesn’t mean isn’t’

A man driving on the Truman Parkway near the East Victory Drive exit was stopped for driving 74 miles per hour in a 55 mile-perhour zone.

When the officer spoke with the driver and his female passenger, the driver said he knew he was speeding and apologized. When his driver’s license was run through dispatch, the officer was advised the driver was wanted for Failure to Appear.

A back-up officer arrived, and the man was taken into custody for Driving on a Suspended License.

After the man was placed in the back of the squad car, the woman was asked to step out of the vehicle.

She complied, and a search was performed of the vehicle.

The woman was asked if there was anything in the vehicle the officers needed to be concerned with. She looked at her purse and said, “There shouldn’t be anything in there.”

An officer told her, “Shouldn’t doesn’t mean isn’t,” and she then said the man had recently bought some marijuana. She said he had her conceal it in a cigarette box in her purse.

The suspect was asked if he was aware that there was marijuana in the vehicle. He knew about it and that it was his.

A small baggie with a green leafy substance was found in a cigarette box inside the purse. The suspect was charged with Possession of Marijuana Less than an Ounce, and charged and cited with Driving on a Suspended License and Speeding.

The marijuana was logged into evidence, and the man was taken to the Chatham County Detention Center. The officers said the suspect remained polite and respectful throughout the incident.

• A man was robbed at gunpoint after dropping his car off at an East 39th Street repair shop.

The man told police that two men approached him and began talking to him, but he tried to ignore them and continued walking away. One of the suspects pulled out a silver/black semi-automatic pistol and said, “You know what time it is. Give up your stuff.”

The suspects made the victim get on the ground, then stole his T-shirt, shoes, $200 in cash and the keys to his car. They got into a car and were last seen turning south onto Skidaway Road.

The robbery occurred about 30 minutes before the victim called police. He said he went to McAlpin Square to use a phone and then a family member drove him to headquarters.

Officers searched for witnesses to the robbery. The repair center has a digital

camera which possibly recorded the robbery.

• Police were called to a Lynah Street apartment complex after a man was robbed at gunpoint.

The victim said he was robbed by four males, two of whom were armed. He said one suspect was holding a hand gun and the other had a black semi-automatic pistol.

At the time of the robbery, the victim was picking up his girlfriend, who lives at the apartment complex. He said he recognized one of the suspects as a former high school classmate, but the other three had shirts over their faces to hide their identities.

The four walked past the victim and went into the breezeway of a building. They returned a few minutes later with the guns.

One of the suspects said, “You know what time it is. Give me what you got.” The suspects made the victim turn around and put his hands on his car, then went through his pockets, taking his wallet and one dollar out of his front pocket.

Inside the wallet were two credit cards.

One of the suspects took the victim’s cell phone, then threw it back on the hood of the victim’s car.

The victim drove home and called police. Forensics was called and attempted to find fingerprints on the cell phone.

• Police were called to a motel on Ogeechee Road on a report of a burglary.

The manager led the officer to an area with several small storage sheds. The locking device had been pried off one of the sheds. An alarm on the shed didn’t sound because the suspect knew what type of alarm it was. Apparently, a small object was placed between the door and the alarm trigger.

The lever was then pulled away from the switch and opened without sounding the alarm. The building was checked for fingerprints. w

Questionable Judgments

With the American West seemingly under perpetual threat of drought, developer Richard Mladick is nonetheless preparing to build Waveyard, a massive water theme park, near Mesa, Ariz., which will require 50 million gallons of groundwater to open and as much as 100 million gallons annually. Explained Mladick: “I couldn’t imagine raising my kids in an environment (without the opportunity) to grow up being passionate about the same sports that I grew up being passionate about” (that is, kayaking, scuba diving and surfing). Voters approved Waveyard overwhelmingly, based on Mladick’s promise of jobs and tax revenue.

In November, Pittsburgh radio station KDKA reported that soldier Jordan Fox had recently been ordered to return $3,000 of his $10,000 enlistment bonus because his blindness and back injury from a roadside bomb in Iraq prevented him from fulfilling the final three months of his one-year Army “commitment.” Fox was surprised to learn that the give-back is standard, but U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire of Pennsylvania has introduced legislation to change that.

Update

Wayne DuMond, who made News of the Weird in 1988, was briefly notable in December 2007 as part of the Republican presidential race. DuMond was an Arkansas rape suspect in 1984 (later convicted) when he said that vigilantes castrated him, and the evidence of that wound up in a jar on the desk of the sheriff of St. Francis County (a prop the sheriff used in law-enforcement speeches). DuMond sued the sheriff, from prison, for intentional infliction of emotional distress and in 1988 won $110,000.

His name recently resurfaced because a subsequent Arkansas governor, Mike Huckabee, allegedly persuaded the parole board to release DuMond, supposedly under pressure from evangelical Christians skeptical of his guilt. However, after being paroled, DuMond killed a Missouri woman, was convicted again, and died in prison in 2005.

At least a half-dozen groups in five countries are seriously engaged in the quest to show that man can fly through the air and land without a parachute, according to a December New York Times report. “All of this is technically possible,” said a physics professor, referring to the wing suits fliers are testing. “The thing I’m not sure of is ... safety.” Some wing suits have slowed vertical descent, briefly, to about 30 miles an hour, though the fliers were still moving horizontally at about 75 mph, which is why all testing is done with parachute backup.

While European and American TV and film producers take care to have dialogue dubbed into foreign languages using voices that are appropriate for each actor, the dubbing in Poland continues to be done by “lektors” -- males with smoking-seasoned voices who speak the dialogue of all the characters in a story in the same pitch. The trick, according to an October Wall Street Journal dispatch, is “speaking so smoothly that viewers forget that Paris Hilton sounds like a Polish Johnny Cash.” One experiment using six different actors for the cast of an episode of “Friends” bombed with viewers, and the next week, the lektor returned.

Mexican Eruption

Mexico’s Popocatepetl volcano produced a spectacular eruption that showered nearby communities with ash. Emergency officials said that the ash plume was the largest expelled by the mountain in the last seven years. Popocatepetl awakened from a dormant state in 1994, and has since produced numerous explosive eruptions. None of the blasts has directly threatened residents in the surrounding state of Puebla.

Anaconda Rescue

A 7-year-old girl was saved from the grip of a giant anaconda about to drag her into Brazil’s Amazon rain forest by a quick-thinking passer-by. Taxi driver Raimundo Carvalho heard the girl’s screams as the 30-foot, 440-pound snake coiled itself around her legs and began dragging her off in the Alca Viaria district of Para state. Carvalho said he was stumped as to what to do, but said a young man identified only as “Miguel” arrived and quickly severed the snake’s head with a machete. The G1 news portal reports that the girl suffered only slight injuries, but would have been killed by constriction and eaten had she not been rescued. Such attacks have increased in recent years due to deforestation, which experts say drives the snakes into inhabited areas in search of food. w

ver the past four years, Savannah’s Baroness has steadily risen from an extremely promising, ultra-underground metal band with strong prog-rock influences to become one of the most buzzworthy such groups on the world scene.

A unique and thought-provoking outfit that seamlessly merges elements of modern metal, post-hardcore, vintage punk and even the syncopated, harmony guitar leads of classic rock, their anthemic, unpredictable and extremely technical brand of extreme rock music is earning them a rabid following far beyond our shores.

On the eve of an impressive double-bill tour of Europe with fellow Savannah-based metal heroes Kylesa, Baroness frontman and guitarist John Baizley (who also creates the psychedelic art which graces their record covers, posters and T-shirts) spoke to us about his group’s new record, and why they love to play across the pond.

Is the new CD living up to expectations?

John Baizley: I know it’s definitely lived up to the expectations the band had for it. We just wanted something that was engaging for us to write and record. The label has been pleased as well. I don’t care to know how many we’ve sold. Everyone connected with the album is proud of it, so on those terms it’s doing very well.

Is being on a larger label everything you thought it would be?

John Baizley: Of course, before we made that decision we did plenty of background research. Essentially, all the horror stories one hears can be true in some form or another. The dramatic stuff we’ve tried to keep

The original Broadway production of this stage musical (based on Harold Gray’s immensely popular 1920s comic strip) ran for more than half a decade on Broadway, and wound up taking home the Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book (among others).

While its initial run closed in 1983, the show —which spawned the hits “It’s the Hard Knock Life” and “Tomorrow”— lives on via road companies and at least two major Broadway revivals. Beloved by children as well as adults, its setting during the Great Depression =Connect Recommends seems increasingly appropriate, given today’s looming financial woes.

Alas, this production does not feature the great thespian John Shuck in the major role of Daddy Warbucks —despite the fact he had held that role in this tour for the past few years.

Some may remember Shuck from his star making turn as Gregory “YoYo” Yoyonovich in the all-too-short-lived TV sitcom Holmes & Yo-Yo. It’s also too bad that Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Patti Smith won’t be onstage to sing “Tomorrow,” as she’s been known to bust out a mighty fine version on occasion. Seriously. The brutal Savannah metal band seemingly next in line for some sort of national acclaim after Kylesa and Baroness, this dynamic lineup of guitar, bass and drums has released a couple of impressively frenzied EPs in the past, and their newest effort seems like the next logical step in what might be termed a natural progression. Their sound is a dense, sludgy —but tightfisted— mix of aggressive, distorted guitar attack and propulsive drumming they term “swamp metal.” Openers for this celebratory gig include ASG, a N.C.-based modern punk/metal act that’s been featured on more than one of the fabled Warped Tours, and The Unnamed, a new “improvised stonerrock” duo of locals Chris Autry (guitar) and Jay Lane (drums). They write and play no-frills, overloaded, hooky pop that’s long on string bends and screaming leads. Opening act Two Days of Freedom has long been one of the most underrated local punk bands. Their stamina and onstage energy is relentless.

Either one or both of these amazingly gifted acoustic string musicians play this tiny, old-school listening room a few minutes from downtown with such a degree of regularity (at least a few times a year) that one could almost be forgiven for shrugging their shoulders and taking their gigs for granted. That would be a huge mistake.

I’d liken it to having the opportunity to see any musical master at their craft, be it one of The Three Tenors, Guy Clark, Bjork, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Wayne Shorter, Emmylou Harris, David Bowie, John Hammond, etc... I mean, really, when someone operates at such a high level of skill and inspiration, how much is too much of a good thing?

give. Such is the case with mandolinist Williamson, an acknowledged legend in his field who plays with symphonies as well as traditional string bands and jazz-fusion hybrids which draw on the bluegrass realm.

Guitarist Autry is at the top of the heap as well. A brilliant improviser with lightning fast reflexes and an ear for the subtleties of live, improvisatory performance which simply can’t be taught, but must be earned through perseverance.

Both men grace this small, 100-capacity venue so often because of their close bond to the proprietor, luthier Randy Wood.

However, some of the shows at this great space are (unfortunately and somewhat bewilderingly) sparsely attended, so it’s wise not to assume it —and players of this caliber— will forever be seen there for chump change. Guitarist, songwriter, vocalist and former Berklee College of Music Professor Rodgers came to some measure of cult prominence as a musical associate of the esteemed musical genius/oddball/raconteur Col. Bruce Hampton (of The Hampton-Grease Band and The Aquarium Rescue Unit). However, when that fabled elder statesman of the southern jam-band scene decided it was time to move on and dive into a new bag —as he is wont to do— Bobby Lee knew that was his cue to take the reins even more than he was previously given credit for. As the main focal point of a re-jiggered, three-piece CodeTalkers, he continued to play theaters, clubs and all manner of major outdoor music festivals.

However, all bets were off several months ago when he abruptly jettisoned his rhythm section in favor of two new musicians that he met by chance at an Open Mic night at this downtown jazz club. Invigorated by the potential he heard in their combined groove and interplay, he essentially offered the position of bassist and drummer to Andrew Altman and Mark Raudabaugh on the spot, likely blowing their minds as well as those of his longtime fans who initially feared he’d made a big mistake. Now, according to Rodgers, the band is much more to his liking than ever before, and they’ve thrown themselves into the road with gusto.

This will be his first hometown show in quite a while, and the fact that it finds him in a playful, “all-jazz” mood should bode well for folks who want to see what three dazzling, improvisational players can do when trying to mold far-reaching material into a tighter-than-normal bag. This came over the wire at the last minute, so readers are advised to call the club first to confirm the gig before showing up. Thurs., 8 pm, Kokopelli’s Jazz Club.

veryone is busy at the Savannah Children’s Theatre these days.

The musical Oliver! opens Jan. 18, and there’s been some scrambling to get everything done. Yet Kelie Miley, the theater’s unflappable director, is calm and smiling in the midst of the madness.

“It’s going very well,” she insists. “Everyone just came back from a long break. I learned a long time ago that if I tried to hold rehearsals after Dec. 18, I’d lose half of my cast. Now we break until school starts again.”

This year’s extra long holiday break left Miley with just two weeks to whip Oliver! into shape. “The costumers are sewing, people are painting and I have a great cast,” she says. “It’s going to come together.”

Twice a year, the Savannah Children’s Theatre presents a main-stage show with adults playing the adult roles. Les Taylor has been cast in one of the adult roles as Fagin.

“He’s not exactly a nice guy, but in this musical, he’s a comical guy,” Taylor says. “He’s bad, but he’s comic. He’s a bad comic.”

Members of the cast rehearse Taylor has played Fagin before. “I did this role about 12 years ago with Kelie when she was working for the city,” he says. “I’ve read the Oliver Twist story. They hang him in the story — the Artful Dodger, too. I guess it was too dark for a musical comedy.”

Taylor’s credentials are impressive. “I’ve acted here in Savannah about 14 years,” he says. “A long, long time ago, I worked in opera for a while.

“I was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam, and was stationed at Hunter Army Airfield,” Taylor says. “I decided when I got out that I was going to do what I really wanted to do. That was sing.

“I went to school and got a degree in voice,” Taylor says. “I went to South Florida and sang professionally while I was going to graduate school.”

For the past 30 years, Taylor has been a voice teacher. Among his students are Tyler Daughtery, who plays the Artful Dodger, and Matthew Sparks, who plays Oliver.

“I really love musical theater,” Taylor says. “I’ve worked many times with Kelie.

“This is going to be a great show. It’s got enthusiastic kids and a great cast.

The pickpockets are all very enthusiastic about picking my pockets.”

At 12, Tyler Daughtery is already a seasoned performer. The Savannah Christian Preparatory School student has done several roles in the last two years.

Tyler joined the Savannah Children’s Theatre for one reason. “My mom wanted me to be a well-rounded person,” he explains. “I was only interested in sports.”

Proving that moms really do know best, Tyler enjoys theater so much he even chose to miss a tennis lesson so he could do publicity for Oliver! “I love theater — it’s wonderful,” he says.

Like Fagin, the Artful Dodger is not exactly a pillar of virtue. “He’s kind of the leader of the pickpockets,” Tyler says. “They steal handkerchiefs and wallets and other things.”

In addition to taking voice lessons, Tyler watched the film version of Oliver! to prepare for the role. He says dancing is the hardest part of musical theater, even though he’s done some Irish dance. “It takes a lot of time to get it right,” he says.

There are about 70 people in the cast, with 25 grown-ups and the rest aged 18 and under. The smallest children play the orphans, and the middle-sized kids are the pickpockets.

“Matthew Sparks is Oliver, and he’s doing a great job,” Miley says. “This show is such a loved show. It’s happy and yet dark at the same time.

“At its heart, it’s about abuse — child abuse, significant other abuse, violence and class struggle,” she says. “I’ve done this show before, but I keep going back to it because it’s so interesting and there’s so much to work on. And the audience likes it.” w

Armstrong hosts Andean textile exhibit with a closing reception Jan. 25

I

n a unique cooperative exhibit, Armstrong Atlantic State University hosts a show of Andean weaving from the highlands of Argentina at the Fine Arts Gallery through Jan. 25.

On the final day the gallery hosts a closing reception at 6 p.m., with an expert talk about these one-of-a-kind pieces of textile art and about ways to keep that tradition alive.

Connect spoke to AASU art prof Rachel Green about the show.

How did this exhibit come about?

Who exactly did you work with there?

Rachel Green: We worked with two groups, Andes Huasi and the Valley Verde Foundation. Both work with artisans from the same area, which is very remote and relies on a long tradition of textile production and weaving. Otherwise the two groups aren’t associated, and approached the problem in two different ways.

Andes Huasi looks at artisans in the area and sees them leaving textile work to go into other industries. The artisans there are forced, because they assume all risks, to purchase all their materials, produce pieces and they also have to market it. So what Andes Huasi does is purchase materials for artisans provide designs and market.

The Valley Verde Foundation is near a small town in the same valley, very remote. They formed a nonprofit fair trade organization with the goal of improving the craft product. They want to establish a sustainable tourist industry in the area, so people will visit them in their homes, look at work and purchase art directly. That way they don’t have to travel to market all day to sell artwork.

What does Armstrong have to do with that effort?

Rachel Green: One thing we came up with was having this exhibit as a way of educating people in this community about groups and textiles. But also we’re going to take a group of students there doing a Study Abroad in June to the town of Salta. We’ll work with weavers and with the Valley Verde Foundation, stay with them a couple of days, take photos and provide graphic design materials, marketing materials. It’s like a service project.

Is Savannah just going to see work by Valley Verde at the exhibit?

Rachel Green: No, there will be textiles from both groups. The real exciting part for Savannah is the guest that will speak at the closing reception. He has a tourism business in Argentina, and his area of academic expertise is sustainable tourism. During the reception he’ll lead a discussion of what is sustainable tourism and how they’re trying to practice it. w Living Threads: Andean Weavings from Argentina can be seen in the AASU Fine Arts Gallery through Jan. 25. Who’s up for a beach party rock n’ roll monster movie?

J

im Reed, founder of the Psychotronic Film Festival — who’s also this publication’s music editor — says this year’s 5th Annual festival is actually a microcosm of the types of films he shows year-round. “A lot of people think this film festival is a one-time thing, but I show similar films twice, even three times a month at The Sentient Bean and sometimes the Lucas,” he says.

Reed wants people to know they can enjoy psychotronic movies (a term that includes B, sci-fi, monster, music, martial arts, documentaries, etc...) after the festival is over.

“I’ve realized over the years that when I have the festival, I see a bunch of unfamiliar faces and faces I hadn’t seen in a year,” he says. “What I try to do is choose six movies that will act as a fairly comprehensive introduction to the types of movies I show all year long.”

That includes movies not yet released to theaters.

“These are brand-new films, which have only been screened at film festivals,” Reed says. “We have at least a couple of movies for this festival that no one will ever have seen. And we have other films that have Jay Wade Edwards been released in theaters, some to great acclaim, and some to eternal shame.”

Jive Turkey, a Blaxploitation film from the 1970s, will be screened Jan. 16. When the Italian Mafia tries to take over the numbers racket from organized crime bookies in Harlem, an all-out turf war begins.

Up next is Stomp! Shout! Scream!, a 2005 independent film that combines all the fun of a monster movie with an old-fashioned beach party flick. Director Jay Wade Edwards will be in Savannah to present his film and answer questions after its screening on Friday, Jan. 18.

On Monday, Jan. 21, Ninja Terminator, one of the most hilariously awful martial arts movies ever made, will be presented. The director of this turkey took existing footage from an action flick and added Ninja footage that had nothing to do with the original script, then dubbed in narration to tie it all together.

Bigger Than Life, which will be presented on Wednesday, Jan. 23, is a “lost” film from 1956 that was directed by Nicholas Ray of Rebel Without a Cause fame. It stars James Mason as a respectable man who becomes a maniacal, pill-popping maniac after taking a “new” miracle drug (cortisone no less!) to cure his fatal heart condition.

The last offering on Friday, Jan. 25, is a highly acclaimed documentary, Crazy Love, about a New York couple who have remained married for decades, even though the husband once threw acid in his wife’s face, leaving her permanently disfigured and blind.

Connect recently caught up with Jay Wade Edwards to discuss independent filmmaking, especially his own first feature film, Stomp! Shout! Scream!

The film is about a murderous rampage by a Florida Skunk Ape (a really smelly Southern Bigfoot) on a Georgia barrier island.

The film has been screened at film festivals across the country.

Awards it has won include Best Feature Film at both the Toofy Film Festival and The Magnolia Independent Film Festival, and it was nominated for Best Cinematography and Best Set Design at the B-movie Film Festival.

By day, Edwards is a television and film editor for Turner Broadcasting. He is the senior editor and producer of the wildly popular animated series Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Squidbillies for Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim and the feature film Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie. His credits also include documentaries for CNN and TBS and Cartoon Network’s Space Ghost Coast to Coast.

On nights and weekends, Edwards creates his own films. He wrote, directed, and edited three short science fiction films -- Mountain of Terror, Day of Dread, Project: Tiki Puka Puka and Esta Noche We Ride! -- known collectively as The Monster Trilogy.

The Hell Hole Swamp Festival, a 2002 documentary about Jamestown, S.C., home of the annual Hell Hole Swamp Festival. Stomp! Shout!

Scream! is Edwards’s first feature film. It premiered at the Austin Film Festival in October 2005.

Set in 1966, it tells the story of an all-girl garage rock band who are on tour when their car breaks down in a small, Southern town, where they have several run-ins with a Florida Swamp Ape. To say any more would just spoil the fun.

Have you ever been to Savannah?

Jay Wade Edwards: It’s been 10 years at least. I have several friends who live down there.

Why did you decide to make a full-length feature?

Jay Wade Edwards: I decided to upgrade -- I wanted to be challenged. I’ve been working full-time at Turner Broadcast for 13 years, so I make movies at night and on the weekends. I knew if I was going do something like this, I’d have to live with it for a long time.

I decided to make a rock-and-roll movie, so I watched every rock-and-roll movie I could find, my favorites being the 60s beach party movies. They were awful moves, but they have a great look and lots of music.

How did this film become a monster movie?

Jay Wade Edwards: A beach movie is innocent and effervescent and lots of fun, so I decided to combine it with a monster movie. I combine all the things I love about those movies.

My real inspiration as I was watching all those movies is that in all the beach party movies, Annette Funicello gets pissed off at Frankie Avalon. I have some friends in a band called Cat Fight who had a song called Syphilis about such a moment.

My first idea was to combine these moments. I knew that in one scene, the heroine was going to walk the beach, singing this song.

I wrote the whole script to get to that moment.

It also gave the lead character a back story that I could use throughout the script. I showed it to my friends and they offered to do original songs for the film.

So the whole project began with the music?

Jay Wade Edwards: The first step of production before we went into filming and even the casting was to record the songs. They also did a cover of an old 60s song called Go-Go Gorilla.

Why is the villain a Skunk Ape? Jay Wade Edwards: I grew up in Florida. My dad would take us fishing in the Everglades.

We’d go down for a week, and he was always trying scare us with the Skunk Ape. He’d say, “See that indentation in the sand?

The Skunk Ape did that!” or “See how that tree hangs over the water? The Skunk Ape did that.”

He’s not a legend, he’s real.

Has your father been an influence on your filmmaking?

Jay Wade Edwards: My father is movie fan. His favor is Soylent Green. We watched a lot of Star Trek together.

I grew up just loving music. Music is the first inspiration for anything I write. I realized I always make movies about novelty songs. I loved Ray Stevens’ songs as a kid. Those songs have a lot of humor.

Why a Southern setting for your film?

Jay Wade Edwards: In my mind, they’re stranded in a little town near Savannah. It’s one of those little beach towns, like Sullivan’s Island.

aren’t enough movies about the South, not that are authentic to any degree. I wanted give it a real location.

I combined all the things I love -- garage rock, girls in short skirts, monsters. I tried to write a story that sucks you in and sweeps you along and has characters you care about.

What is the most difficult thing about making films?

How do you raise the money to make a film?

Jay Wade Edwards: About the time I was writing the script. Aqua Teen Hunger Force started being released on DVD. In addition to producing and editing Aqua Teen, I helped produce and edit the DVDs as a second job.

In addition to writing scripts and investing, I was working seven nights a week and weekends on the DVD project. Between investing, selling some stocks my grandmother gave me, I raised $100,000 to shoot it, most of it being my own money. That was just to get it shot. It cost probably another $75,000 for marketing and getting ready for distribution.

I’m an editor at heart. I wrote the script and raised the money so I could get to the editing. I was editing something all my own, what I really live for.

You do have a really cool day job. What’s it like to work on ATHF and Squidbillies, which is set in Georgia?

Jay Wade Edwards: The real magic of Squidbillies to me is that they cast actors who are real Southern people. In the editing of the show, it makes it a real challenge because since they aren’t actors, they tend not to have the range real professional actors have.

There will be 20 new episodes of Squidbillies and 10 new episodes of Aqua Teen beginning Sunday, Jan. 19. The new season will start just two days after the screening in Savannah.

I understand one of the actors in the film is originally from Savannah.

So what are you going to tell people at the screening in Savannah?

Jay Wade Edwards: The first question is usually, “Are the actresses really playing those instruments?” I have to explain that we cast the best actresses we could find, then taught them how to play. I think it’s better than the original beach party movies.

Cynthia Evans, who plays Jody the drummer, was a miracle and it’s remarkable that we found a great actress coordinated enough to play the drums. We got really lucky. Evan Lieberman is also a producer of the film because he added so much. He’s a musician and taught the girls all how to play.

In Savannah, I’ll have DVDs and sound tracks for just $10. They’re packed with extras -- commentary, behind-the-scenes stuff.

What will your next project be?

Jay Wade Edwards: I have the whole story laid out. I have scenes in my head. Stomp!

Shout! Scream! is the first of a Skunk Ape quadrilogy.

In the next film, we would follow Theodora to the Midwest in the 1970s. She’s kind of a drunk and in a Country-Western band. It would be in the style of the animalattacks movies. The third one is five years later, in the late 70s. Theodora is in LA, she’s a heroin addict and in a punk rock band.

The fourth one is set in space and Theodora is on a spaceship. The Skunk Ape chases her around the ship.

Had this Skunk Ape made me a bunch of money, I’d have already made the second movie by now. It was five years ago this month that I started writing it, and I’m still looking for a distributor.

I’ve only made back one percent of what I put into it, but that isn’t why I made it. You don’t make a monster, rock-n-roll, beachparty movie to make money. You make it because you have to. w The Fifth Annual Psychotronic Film Festival will present Jive Turkey on Jan. 14, Stomp!

Jay Wade Edwards: You spend every dime you have and every waking moment to make the film, then pray it gets into a nice film festival. At that point, you’re less than halfway done with the film.

Your whole life is being marketed so you can make another film. I started writing this film in Jan. 2003, and it was shot in Oct. 2004. Eighteen months later I had raised the money and worked like a dog. It was shot on 35 mm film with a full film crew.

In October 2005, it premiered at the Austin Film Festival. Three years later, I’m still hawking the film, still trying to make a distribution deal. It’s been shown at the Sweet Onion Film Festival in Walla Walla, Wash., so I can say it’s been screened everywhere from Atlanta to Walla Walla.

Jay Wade Edwards: Mary Kraft, who plays Carol, the bass player, is from Savannah. All of the characters in the film are named after my grandparents.

Theodora, the lead character, is named after my grandmother, who also is in the film. She’s the lady on the beach who has her transistor radio turned up too loud. She’ll be 90 next month. Her full name is Theodora Viola, so that’s why the band is called The Violas.

There Will Be Blood  I’m not sure Daniel Day-Lewis’ performance in There Will Be Blood represents the best acting of 2007 (as various critics’ groups have declared), but it certainly represents the most acting of the past year. His performance here as Daniel Plainview, a prospector who strikes it rich in turn-of-the-century California, basically comes across as Bill the Butcher (his character in Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York) turned up a couple of notches. Then again, Day-Lewis’ oversized turn is right in line with Paul Thomas Anderson’s oversized ambitions in creating a modern-day masterpiece, a movie so audacious that it flagrantly apes Citizen Kane during its final half-hour and recalls The Treasure of the Sierra Madre at regular intervals. That so many critics are indeed calling this an instant classic isn’t surprising, but if the No Country for Old Men vs. There Will Be Blood grudge match continues to gain traction, I’m afraid I’ll have to pledge my allegiance to the Coen Brothers’ equally brutal, equally risky but ultimately more satisfying drama. Anderson’s latest film isn’t even up to the standards of what I consider his real masterpiece, Boogie Nights, though there’s enough here to please hardcore cineasts as well as more adventurous moviegoers. Based on Upton Sinclair’s novel Oil!

The Savages  How interesting that 2007 produced two pictures about Alzheimer’s that approached the subject from diametrically opposite points. (It’s also interesting that these two movies, both involving caregivers, were written and directed by women, usually deemed the primary caregivers in our society.) Sarah Polley’s Away From Her was about a man who dearly loved his wife and was devastated as the disease created an unbreachable gap between them. Tamara Jenkins’ The Savages (finally reaching town) is about siblings who dislike their dad and are upset that circumstances dictate they be responsible for his well-being. Away From Her was a straightforward drama, but The Savages is a black comedy that frequently goes down like the most bitter coffee imaginable. Philip Bosco plays the father figure around which the action stirs: Found

the movie opens with a superb 12-minute sequence with no dialogue -- perhaps a nod to Erich Von Stroheim’s silent milestone, Greed, also about the destructive power of accumulated wealth? During this sequence, we’re introduced to Plainview, a determined prospector who over time strikes it rich and becomes one of the nation’s most powerful oilmen. Plainview has an adopted son in young H.W. (Dillon Freasier), who ends up going deaf after sitting next to an oil rig that explodes as it brings up black riches from beneath the surface. Plainview tries to be an acceptable parent to the boy, but he’s hardly a social creature, intolerant of those around him and not one to extend trust or affection easily. His greatest adversary as he tries to milk the land dry is Eli Sunday, an unctuous preacher who’s as much the conniving showman as Daniel Plainview. The picture is a beauty to behold (Oscar nods for technical achievements should breed like rabbits), and there are individual sequences so staggering that a second viewing will hardly be a chore. But those planning to check it out should be sure to bring an umbrella, Rocky Horror Picture Show-style, just in case Day-Lewis’ juicy lip-smacking manages to break through that fourth wall.

smearing his own excrement on the bathroom walls of his Arizona residence, he’s eventually placed into the hands of his distant -- both geographically and emotionally -- offspring, Jon and Wendy Savage (Philip Seymour Hoffman and Laura Linney). Jon’s a college professor in Buffalo, while Wendy’s an aspiring writer in New York City; neither one has the time nor the inclination to take care of the old man -- more so since by all accounts he made their childhoods miserable -- but they do their best to find him suitable lodging in an “assisted living” facility. But Wendy’s definition of suitable is different than Jon’s, and the siblings end up squabbling about his living arrangements, a discussion that opens up a can of worms regarding their relationships not only with their father but with each other. Overall, The Savages is a keenly observed study offering believably bruised people making the best out of their rickety lives. As for the two

leads, they’re equally superb. Linney turns every one of Wendy’s foibles and insecurities into a mountain that the character must scale before she can come to acceptance with herself, and the actress keeps us firmly in her corner. As for Hoffman, this is his third great performance of 2007 -- he’s also aces in Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead and Charlie Wilson’s War -- and thanks to a smashing sequence in which he describes the brutal realities of growing old, it’s also his best.

I wasn’t tempted to cram a gun muzzle into my mouth this time around. That’s not to say it couldn’t have been better. Callie Khouri won a well-deserved Oscar for penning Thelma & Louise, and it would have been interesting to see what additional shadings she could have lent to the situations on display here. But for Mad Money, she only serves as director, leaving the writing assignment in the hands of Glenn Gers. The Anthony Hopkins-Ryan Gosling thriller Fracture (which Gers wrote) was a pleasant surprise last year, and Gers fares best in this latest picture when he focuses on the intricacies of the heist that our leading ladies intend to pull off. But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Keaton stars as Bridget Cardigan, an uppermiddle-class wife reeling from that fact that her husband Don (Ted Danson, very good in his best role in ages) has lost his job and they may now be in danger of losing their home and comfortable lifestyle. As a tempo-

rary solution, Bridget takes a job as a cleaning lady at the Federal Reserve Bank, where she eventually devises an elaborate scheme to steal the worn-out bills marked for destruction in the building’s shredding facilities. She enlists the aid of two co-workers, sensible single mom Nina (Queen Latifah) and vivacious party girl Jackie (Katie Holmes), and the trio set about pulling off the most unlikely of heists. Mad Money is a generally entertaining picture, even as it dabbles in implausibilities and often fails to get a firm grasp on its characters (for example, several scenes attempt to paint Holmes’ Jackie as an utter dingbat when she clearly isn’t).

National Treasure: Book of Secrets Given the emphasis on history in the National Treasure franchise, this followup to the 2004 original reminded me of a line from the Herman’s Hermits tune about

that jolly historical figure Henry the Eighth: “Second verse, same as the first.” In other words, National Treasure: Book of Secrets is essentially the same movie as its blockbuster predecessor, meaning it’s a draggy combination of The Da Vinci Code and matineestyle thrills. Only Nicolas Cage’s Benjamin Franklin Gates is no Indiana Jones, and (like the first flick) this isn’t Raiders of the Lost Ark. Moving ahead at breakneck speed and with no time for rhyme or reason, it’s a disjointed yarn in which Gates, in an effort to prove that his great-great-grandfather wasn’t one of the conspirators behind Abe Lincoln’s assassination, must locate a legendary lost city of gold by uncovering clues hidden on historical artifacts in Paris, London and at the White House. Practically the entire principal cast returns from the original film - Jon Voight as Gates’ dad, Diane Kruger as his girlfriend, Justin Bartha as his sidekick, and Harvey Keitel as the sympathetic FBI agent hovering around the margins (a role that exists for no discernible reason) -- and they’re joined by a slumming Ed Harris as a one-minute-he’s-a-bad-guy-now-he’s-goodno-wait-he’s-bad-again treasure seeker and a slumming Helen Mirren as Gates’ feisty mother. It should be noted that this marks Mirren’s first screen appearance since winning an Oscar for The Queen. Granted, that’s not nearly as shocking as Shirley MacLaine turning up in Cannonball Run II immediately after her Terms of Endearment Oscar victory, but it’s nothing to brag about, either.

I Am Legend 1/2 Will Smith may be the only one receiving above-the-title star treatment on the new apocalyptic sci-fi yarn I Am Legend, but he’s hardly the one who runs away with the film. In fact, pretty much everything in this picture -- the other actors, the FX work, even the art direction -- is shown up by Abbey, who delivers a terrific performance which in a perfect world would be up for an Academy Award in a couple of months.

Granted, there’s the small technicality that Abbey’s a dog -- a German shepherd, to be exact -- but still... I Am Legend is based on Richard Matheson’s novel of the same name, and while it’s not the first theatrical version of the time-honored tale -- there’s also 1964’s The Last Man On Earth and 1971’s unintentionally campy The Omega Man -it’s certainly the best. As Robert Neville, the scientist who appears to be the sole survivor in New York City after a virus has wiped out most of humankind, Smith brings the right mix of vigor and vulnerability to the part, and director Francis Lawrence maintains a fair amount of tension as long as Neville (and audience members) can’t size up the shadowy menace. But once the bloodthirsty creatures show themselves, they’re disappointingly conventional (at least by CGI zombie standards), and the film has trouble continuing its momentum through a lackluster final half-hour.

Hoosiers and countless other “Seize the day” flicks. Washington stars as Melvin B. Tolson, the coach of the debate team at an all-black college in 1930s Texas. With four members under his tutelage -- played by talented thespians Jurnee Smollett, Denzel Whitaker (no relation to co-star Forest Whitaker, who plays his stern father), Nate Parker and Jermaine Williams -- Tolson is determined that his squad will emerge as one of the best, if not the best, in the nation; to accomplish that goal, however, he and his charges will have to contend not only with the racism of the time but also with tensions within their own ranks. PC to a fault -- I love how in the debates, Tolson’s team conveniently always gets to argue the right side of any given topic (poverty, equal rights, etc.) -- The Great Debaters is nevertheless sincere in its belief in the power of education and in the importance of language. Co-produced by Oprah Winfrey and running just right at 124 minutes, it’s naked in its shameless desire to make audiences wince at every setback and cheer at every victory. The strength of the movie is that it gets away with it almost every time.

This year’s sight-unseen, automatic Oscar entry mostly lives up to its lofty expectations, even if it doesn’t possess the sweeping emotion that provided other British period pieces like Sense and Sensibility and The Remains of the Day with their enduring resonance. If a finger must be pointed, it would most likely fall in the direction of director Joe Wright, who previously teamed with his muse Keira Knightley on 2005’s breezy adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. Knightley essays the role of Cecilia, who finds herself attracted to the family servant’s upwardly mobile son Robbie (James McAvoy). But Cecilia’s precocious younger sister Briony (Saoirse Ronan) has also developed a crush (albeit a more chaste one) on Robbie, and she grows jealous as she witnesses events that she feels attests to the bond between the lovers. Eventually, Briony uses a tragedy that occurs on the estate grounds as a way to get back at Robbie, not comprehending the long-term implications of her actions.

It’s only when she herself has grown up (and played at this point by Romola Garai) that she’s able to grasp the magnitude of what she did -- and work on setting matters right.

Knightley’s role doesn’t allow her to flourish as she did under Wright’s direction in Pride and Prejudice, which is fine, since this is Briony’s story and McAvoy’s film. As solemnly played by Ronan, the teenage Briony comes off as a bad seed writ large, with an IQ that, coupled with her naivety, makes her especially dangerous. It’s a memorable performance in the best-written role, yet it’s the excellent McAvoy who injects the proceedings with a notable degree of compassion.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street 1/2 This is an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s 1979 Broadway smash, but it hides its stage roots so thoroughly that it feels like a piece created for the silver screen. In refashioning Sweeney Todd for the movies, Tim Burton and scripter John Logan have presented audiences with a big, bold endeavor that functions as an upscale slasher film: It’s bloody but also bloody good, with the gore tempered by the melancholy love stories that dominate the proceedings. Burton’s go-to guy, Johnny Depp, delivers a haunted performance as Benjamin Barker, a sweet-natured barber who’s falsely imprisoned by a lecherous judge (Alan Rickman) who covets Barker’s wife. Fifteen years later, Barker returns to London a changed man: Now calling himself Sweeney Todd and looking like a zombie who’s already been buried a couple of times, he sets about planning his revenge. He’s aided in his efforts by Nellie Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter), a lonely widow whose love for Todd will clearly remain unrequited. As partnersin-crime, however, they’re matched beautifully: A crazed Todd slits the throats of all who sit in his barber’s chair, while Mrs. Lovett grinds up the corpses to use in her increasingly popular meat pies.

Sterling entertainment punched across with enough glitz to sell it but not too much to bury it. Aided by a big-name cast and a sharp script by Aaron Sorkin (adapting George Crile’s nonfiction book), Nichols has crafted a winning if occasionally facile work whose level of intelligence is measured by how much (or how little) each individual viewer wants to put into it. Kicking off in the 1980s, it follows Texas Democratic Congressman Charlie Wilson (Tom Hanks), a blustery politician not above lounging in Vegas hot tubs with busty strippers, as he becomes interested in Afghanistan’s ineffectual attempts to oust the invading Soviet army. Charlie’s spurred to take action at the insistence of his politically savvy friend Joanne Herring (Julia Roberts, little more than serviceable), a born-again right-wing millionaire who also hails from the Lone Star State. Charlie does his best, but it isn’t until he teams up with prickly CIA operative Gust Avrakotos (Philip Seymour Hoffman, marvelous) that the ball gets rolling and the Afghans are able to defend themselves. But at what cost to the future? Charlie Wilson’s War doesn’t answer its own question, preferring instead to let viewers mull over the response. w
