ayor Otis Johnson wants Savannah to know that most young people in the city are good kids.

“Eighty to 85 percent of our young people do exactly what we want them to do and expect them to do,” he said during a Town Hall meeting held July 18 — then repeated the statement slowly so it would soak in.

It’s the other 15 to 20 percent that cause the problems — and get all the attention, Johnson said. Headlines scream about juvenile offenders, yet there is virtually no public recognition of “all the good kids,” he said.

But perhaps the “good kids” are ignored because the behavior of the others is deplorable — and it’s getting worse.

City Manager Michael Brown says juvenile crime is on the rise and juvenile arrests are up. Year to date, 854 such arrests have been made, compared to 1,434 arrests made in all of 2006.

“I’m very unhappy to report that youths under the age of 18 are responsible for one-quarter of the violent crimes,” Brown said. “In almost every case, a lack of parental involvement, even a culture that encourages violence, is a factor.”

In response, the Savannah Impact Program, which identifies and targets repeat offenders, is being expanded.

The city’s curfew ordinance is being more strictly enforced, and truancy sweeps are being done to catch local juveniles who are skipping school and getting into trouble.

• The Town Hall meetings are working well, Mayor Otis Johnson says. “We’ve had an excellent turnout every time,” he says.

But Johnson did ask audience members to behave themselves. “First respect yourself, then respect the audience, then respect the elected officials,” he says. “We’re going to do the best we can for you.”

Johnson thanked everyone in attendance for their support and prayers for his brother, who has been in intensive care at Grady Hospital in Atlanta since a car accident. Johnson said his brother’s condition has improved enough that he is being moved from intensive care.

• City Manager Michael Brown presented Savannah’s “report card” to the council and audience members.

In public safety matters, crime rates are up. “The most disturbing is the increase in robberies,” Brown said. “Homicides are up. Aggravated assault is up.”

Private groups also want to help. The Rev. Rick Bready, pastor of the Tremont Temple Missionary Baptist Church, has organized the Savannah Faith Coalition for Youth, and several other pastors who are involved accompanied him to the meeting. “The idea is that the faithful can assist youth and deter juvenile delinquency,” Bready said.

“We want to encourage pastors throughout the city and youth leaders to join us,” he said. “We need input and support.”

Bready said the group would meet Aug. 9 at 10 a.m. at the St. Pius X Family Resource Center. Potential volunteers are asked to call Bready at 651-6810.

The need for intervention is clear, Bready says, as 64 percent of the violent crime committed in the city involves people under 25.

“It’s obvious we are dealing with a problem that needs to be addressed,” he said.

Mayor Johnson praised Bready’s group for its efforts. “The ones who are causing the concern aren’t in Sunday School,” he said. “We have to go where they are and not be afraid.”

James Putney, district director of the Savannah High School Parent Teacher Association, also attended the meeting. “We’re trying to get parents and grandparents to join,” he said.

Johnson praised the PTA and Parent University. He told Putney groups like his need to be “evangelists.”

“You’ve got to go out and sell your story,” Johnson said. “The citizens aren’t going to come to you.”

The police department is using manpower redeployments to address crime. The focus is at the precinct level, and the department is working to fill beats and increase walking patrols.

A new campaign has been instituted to remove derelict vehicles and demolish blighted properties.

Volunteers are working to repair homes throughout the city, Brown said.

The city is continuing to promote economic development by creating a comprehensive directory of qualified minority and women-owned businesses. Step-Up Savannah’s Poverty Reduction Initiative has received a $140,000 grant to help local low-wage employees enroll in publicly funded work supports.

In capital improvements, Brown reported that the $1.5 million W. W. Law Center expansion was completed in June, and the $1.7 million renovation of the Lady Bamford Center will be completed in August.

Major projects currently under way are the

Crossroads Water Quality Control Plant, the Ellis Square Garage, the Capital Street Fire Station, the landfill expansion, and drainage of Alice and Tattnall streets.

Citizens who want answers or action on non-emergency needs can call the city’s 311 Call Center. Brown reported that calls to the center are on the increase.

• Resident Kathy Gideon asked the council to look into an outage of the 911 system during a storm on July 14. Gideon said she heard about the outage when attending another meeting. “Why don’t we have backup generators?” she asked. “We have the potential for hurricanes here.”

City Manager Michael Brown confirmed that there was indeed a 9-minute 911 outage during the storm.

He said the entire system didn’t go down, as radios still worked. w

City Manager Michael Brown says youth crime is up, and ‘in almost every case, a lack of parental involvement, even a culture that encourages violence, is a factor.’

According to the city’s curfew ordinance, all youths under the age of 17 must be off the streets at 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and by midnight on Friday and Saturday.

“It’s the parent’s responsibility to know where their child is, what the child is doing,” Johnson says. “If they don’t do that, there will be a penalty.”

The mayor says he realizes the issue will be emotionally charged. “I’ve got my flak jacket on,” he said.

Alderman Mary Osborne said the council recently had a “very, very aggressive” meeting with the board of education and agreed to look at models of ordinances now in force in Jacksonville and DeKalb County.

“We want to put teeth into this and do something about it,” she said.

Johnson said that when he was director of the Youth Future Authority, juveniles found after curfew whose parents couldn’t be located were taken to the Greenbriar Children’s Home.

“They were held there until someone signed them out. The first time, the child was taken to a safe place,” Johnson says.

“The second time the parent was given a warning, and the third time, they were told, ‘That’s illegal.’”

Brown said the city currently has a contract with Park Place, a shelter for runaways, to house juveniles. “The police now take the child home, and if no parent or responsible adult is there, they’re taken to Park Place,” he said.

The city’s parental responsibility ordi-

nance needs to be reviewed, Brown said. At present, the ordinance deems parents neglectful if there are illegal drugs or firearms in the home, repeated curfew violations, repeated absence from school or delinquent behavior.

James DeLorme, a city council candidate, said the communities of Charleston and North Charleston have ordinances that allow police officers to stop, question and detain anyone about why they are in a neighborhood. He said such an ordinance is needed here.

“If you go to any African-American community in Savannah, you’ll find young boys hanging on the corners and selling dope,” he said. “The police say they don’t have the authority to deal with them, which does not resound with the community.”

DeLorme says the council has been mandated by the voters to make changes. “You have the votes to do whatever you want,” he said.

Johnson said the council would continue to look for ways to deal with the problem of juvenile crime.

“We know, given the right course, the right adult support, that children will do

what’s right,” he said. “We’ve got to struggle with the negative culture out there.”

Audience member Kathy Gideon said the Southside has been especially impacted by unsupervised youths. In addition to problems at the Star Castle on Mall Boulevard, whose patrons have been causing havoc after hours, a teen club on Abercorn Street closes at 10 p.m., leaving teens with nothing to do.

One night, the club didn’t open at all.

“There were possibly 1,000 youth who had been dropped off and couldn’t get into the teen club,” Gideon said.

“They were unruly. They wouldn’t let other people go into the adjacent businesses.

Not one person went into any of those businesses in three hours, so they had no sales.”

Alderman Tony Thomas seemed to defend the owners of Star Castle.

“Although the problems seem to be originating at Star Castle, they’re happening away from that area,” Thomas said. “It’s not so much Star Castle, it’s the whole of Mall Boulevard. Some aren’t Star Castle customers, they’re meeting with others who are coming out.”

Is development downtown out of hand?

Mark McDonald, executive director of the Historic Savannah Foundation, said at the Town Hall meeting that the foundation is concerned about how development affects downtown neighborhoods.

“We want the city to continue to grow,” he said. “But we feel Savannah deserves the best and the city needs to set standards or it will not get what it deserves.”

McDonald noted the foundation has saved endangered historic and blighted buildings.

“The Historic Savannah Foundation has made five $10,000 grants available to homesteaders in the downtown area who are middle income,” he said. “I think we can get a lot more done working together than separately.”

In his city manager’s report, City Manager Michael Brown said the city’s concerns about development in the historic district include the proposed building’s height, proposed use of the building, availability of parking, affordability, architectural quality and protection of residents.

One concept the city is looking at to improve the quality of life is the encouragement of “green roofs” in the downtown area, Brown said.

Mayor Johnson said he too is concerned about development. “Progress in the historic and Victorian districts has forced up property values and rents,” he said.

With one-fifth of Savannahians living at or below the poverty level, there is a huge need for affordable housing. “At the same time, we have construction of condos that start at $500,000,” Johnson said.

“With development on Abercorn, we’re going to lose more affordable housing to condos,” he said. “This must be addressed. All citizens deserve a decent, affordable place to stay.” w

Yet Thomas said he himself had gone to a Mall Boulevard parking lot to observe the situation for himself, and more needs to be done.

“There have already been gunshots at this location,” Thomas says. “It’s my prediction that a kid is going to be murdered or killed.”

Johnson noted that a few unruly people can ruin a good thing for everyone. “Five to six years ago, we had a skating rink,” he said.

“Many kids behaved themselves and had a good time. A small minority of kids ruined it for everyone. We should have dealt with that group.”

A similar situation occurred at Hiphuggers, which was turned into a teen nightclub. “Hundreds of kids came and had a good time,” Johnson said. “A few rowdies ruined it for everyone.”

Now a similar situation exists on Mall Boulevard, Johnson said. “We need to identify the rotten apples and deal with them,” he said.

Kris Rice, executive director of the Coastal Children’s Advocacy Center, said child abuse and neglect are causes of juvenile crime. “We need more child abuse investigators,” she said.

At the present time, five detectives must handle the entire caseload for the city, Rice said.

“That is just not adequate for the need.

We immediately need two more detectives in the unit. Four more detectives would be great,” she says. “Consider the expense worth it for the children’s sakes and the safety of the community.”

Alderman Van Johnson said the Department of Family and Children’s Services also needs more child abuse and neglect investigators. “The people we have now are stressed and overworked,” he said.

“It is very stressful work.”

Mayor Johnson said that work has just begun on finding solutions to juvenile crime.

The council will meet with the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools and the Chatham County Commission to look at ways to deal with the problem of parents who don’t provide for their children.

“It’s a very dicey situation,” Johnson says.

“One side will say we’re getting in people’s homes and interfering with the rights of parents. The other side will say ‘Punish the hell out of them because they’re not doing what they should.’

“Somewhere in the middle we must find a way to deal with parents of unruly children,” he said. “We are throwing down the gauntlet (to say) that this type of behavior will not be tolerated.”

Growing culture, growing community T

his past Thursday night, some of Savannah’s most passionate arts patrons, from a wide variety of local cultural groups and a diverse range of backgrounds, gathered to hear a speech by Randy Cohen, researcher with the nonprofit Americans for the Arts.

Cohen’s organization seeks to raise the profile of arts in American life and education, with a special focus on evangelizing the value of the arts to the economy in a rapidly changing global business climate.

Some attendees acknowledged the “preaching to the choir” aspect of the occasion, since no one at the event needed convincing as to the value of the arts.

But here’s the thing: If your goal is to make that choir bigger, then preaching to them might be exactly what you need to do.

I remember not so very long ago, as do others I’ve spoken to on this topic, when the only real cultural games in this town were the Telfair, the Savannah Symphony and to a lesser extent City Lights Theatre. If you were to “preach to the choir” back then, that would have been said choral ensemble, virtually in its entirety.

The Savannah Music Festival, known as Savannah Onstage back then, was but a minnow in a very small pond. For a look at just how exponentially that event has taken off, read music editor Jim Reed’s in-depth article on page 13.

These days things are entirely different.

Not to knock the established veteran groups in town, but the recent influx of new blood in the local arts community -- and it must be said, competent new blood -- has completely changed the game.

At the meeting Thursday night, there were representatives from some relatively new kids on the block, such as Savannah Danse Theatre, Latin American Service Organization, the Savannah Children’s Choir and Savannah Actors Theatre, to name but a few.

These newer players on Savannah’s cultural scene are hungry, and ready to get to work taking this city to the next level, artsand-business-wise.

I’ve already gone over the numbers in a previous column, so I won’t risk boring you with too much more data from Americans for the Arts’ huge “Arts and Economic Prosperity” study, which is all available at www.artsusa.org/.

But suffice it to say that compared to other markets its size, Savannah is doing substantially better in terms of the amount of money and jobs generated by cultural groups and their audiences.

One particularly eye-popping number relates to the amount of money that out-of-

towners spend per head while experiencing Savannah’s cultural events, which in this context do not refer to for-profit events such as traveling road shows or Hollywood films.

Visitors to Savannah are apparently spending a total of $67 per person when attending local cultural events -- that would include dinner, drinks, souvenirs, etc., and that’s not including the cost of admission. This per capita number is substantially larger than other areas our size reported in the study.

The downside to this great news is: If we’re doing so well with that number, what key numbers are left to improve? There’s certainly a consensus that Savannah has a ways to go before we break through to that next level of the arts’ economic impact, as cities like Austin, Texas, or Charleston, S.C., have been able to do.

If we’re kicking so much butt on per capita dollars, well... what are we doing wrong?

I spoke at length with Randy Cohen on this issue after his speech, and he said the answer has two parts, both revolving around volume: 1) Savannah must provide a greater number and variety of cultural offerings than it currently does.

2) The metro area itself simply must get bigger.

That second solution isn’t what everybody wants to hear, with all our current concerns about rampant development and its impact on traffic and the environment and overall quality of life here.

But you know, despite all our complaints about how quickly it’s growing, Savannah remains a pretty tiny, out-of-the-way place, comparatively speaking. Very few key destination cities in the U.S. are as small in population as we are.

We all love this city’s languid, off-thebeaten-path character and wouldn’t want it to change substantially. But the growth is coming, like it or not. And culture is our ace in the hole, our best chance to make sure that inevitable growth is the kind of growth we all can live with.

Rick Winger of the Savannah Economic Development Authority says his secret to attracting new investment here is simple: “If we can get someone to visit here once, they’ll see for themselves that this is a city alive with arts and music.”

We must always keep in mind that Savannah’s “strong, flexible, vibrant arts sector,” as Mayor Otis Johnson put it Thursday night, is not only what attracts tourists, but what attracts a high-quality work force and keeps it here.

Moral of the story: Don’t trust a guy named ‘Brick’

A man called police to report that his garage apartment had been burglarized for the sixth time in two years. He said he had left his residence in the morning and returned shortly after to discover someone had just broken in. The suspect removed a side window panel to gain entry.

The window glass was located just beneath the sill and was broken at one corner. The suspect apparently cut himself, as there was blood on the window sill. Once inside, the suspect stole two weedeaters and multiple DVDs. There was a third weedeater found on the side of the residence that the suspect had taken out of the house, but left behind.

The victim said as he was leaving that morning, a man he didn’t know stopped and asked to borrow a tool. He said although he doesn’t know he man personally, he recognized him as someone who does yard work in the area at times.

Later in the day, the victim saw a man he knows only as “Brick” in the area driving a truck that appeared to have his missing items in the back. The driver sped off when he saw the victim. “Brick” had begged the victim for money not long ago.

Forensics was called to the scene and a case report number was given to the victim.

• When police were called to a report of a domestic situation with injuries, they arrived to find an ambulance and fire truck already on the scene. The officer went to the residence. A woman opened the door and the officer asked, “Where is he?”

“Right there,” the woman said, motioning toward her left. The officer stepped into the house and found a man who the officer had dealt with before sitting on the sofa.

He was eating what appeared to be French toast and was cuddled up with his 4-year-old daughter. When the man saw the officer, he became angry and yelled at the woman for calling police. The officer asked the woman what happened. She said the man had punched her in the head several times. When the officer asked the man what happened, he said he was mad because the woman wouldn’t let him see his children. He was arrested on charges of simple battery and domestic violence.

• Police were called to Candler Hospital on report of a forgery. A woman said that she had gone into the hospital to give birth.

She gave her debit card to her boyfriend so he could pay bills. The man said he had withdrawn $250 from the account to pay the bills, and believes he may have accidentally left the card behind at the ATM after the transaction. When he went to re-

turn the card to the woman, he couldn’t find it. The woman immediately called her bank to check all transactions. Four unauthorized transactions totalling about $220 had been made since the card had gone missing. Because she was hospitalized, the woman couldn’t go to the credit union to get a printout of the transactions, so the officer went. The woman was given a case report number.

• Neighbors called a woman who had gone out of town to tell her that her front and back doors were open. Police arrived at the Grimball Point Road address and learned that the woman’s son was staying at the house with his father while his mother was out of town. He said he checked the house and found some drawers, shelves and items in his room that had been disturbed. The man said that he didn’t notice anything missing, and couldn’t find any damage. The only area that seemed to have been disturbed was his room. He told police he wasn’t sure if he had locked all the doors to the house when he left and said he might have left one or two of them unlocked. There were no signs of forced entry.

• A woman drove a friend to a doctor’s appointment on Waters Avenue. She helped her friend walk inside the building and came right back out within a few minutes. While walking back to her car, she noticed the glass from her passenger side window had been shattered on the ground.

At first, she thought the heat had caused the window to shatter, but then she noticed that her purse was gone. She said the purse had her ID, business credit cards, her personal debit card and insurance cards.

There also was about $200 in cash in a side pocket to purchase items for her job.

Forensics was called to fingerprint the car and extra patrol of the area was advised.

One of the standard “panic” rumors that throw some African villages into turmoil is the report that a couple (usually unmarried and therefore deserving of bad fortune) has become stuck together during sex and cannot be unstuck without medical attention. A reporter for Kenya’s East African Standard happened to be in the middle of a frenzied mob in front of the Naselica Hotel in downtown Kisumu on May 26, brought together by rumors that an ambulance had been called for a stuck couple. A huge underground lake discovered beneath Sudan’s Darfur region could help end years of conflict and genocide there, according to scientists. “Much of the unrest in Darfur and the misery is due to water shortages,” said geologist Farouk ElBaz, director of the Boston University Center for Remote Sensing. He told the Associated Press that water pumped from the underground reservoir could enable Darfur’s nomadic Arabs to maintain their lifestyle without competing with ethnic African farming communities for water resources. By examining satellite and radar images, Baz and a team of 20 other researchers determined that the underground lake covers 11,873 square miles and was once replenished by rainfall from a much wetter climate in the sub-Saharan region. Scientists now plan to identify the best location for drilling the first of an anticipated 1,000 wells. Egypt has pledged to drill the first 20, and the U.N. mission in Sudan plans to drill several more for use by its peacekeeping forces.

Spider Explosion

Heavy rainfall last month in southeastern parts of Australia’s Victoria state has triggered an explosion in the birth rate of the spider population. “They have been hanging around waiting for this change in moisture level because things have been dry,” said Robert Raven, senior curator of spiders at the Queensland Museum. He told Southern Cross Broadcasting that most of the species are harmless, and the few reported cases of bites have been relatively mild. Many in the Gippsland region report that high numbers of the arachnids have taken up residence in their houses.

Melting sea ice due to climate change in the Arctic is driving female polar bears onto dry land in northern Alaska to give birth, according to U.S. Geological Survey scientists. The agency’s researchers say they found that only 37 percent of polar bear dens were built on sea ice between 1998 and 2004, compared to 62 percent during the previous 10 years. “In recent years, Arctic pack ice has formed progressively later, melted earlier and lost much of its older and thicker multi-year component,” researcher Anthony Fischbach wrote in the journal Polar Biology. “These changes have resulted in pack ice that is a less stable platform on which to give birth and raise new cubs.” Many polar bears around the Arctic region give birth on land, but the group studied in Alaska has historically created dens on sea ice as far as 400 miles offshore.

A major temblor that rocked Japan’s Niigata prefecture killed 10 people and injured more than 1,000 others. The quake also sparked a fire at the world’s largest nuclear power plant, and allowed radioactive material from the facility to escape into the sea and atmosphere.

La Niña Fades

The U.S. environment agency NOAA announced that the La Niña ocean-cooling phenomenon in the tropical Pacific, which generally brings a more active Atlantic hurricane season, will be mainly absent for the remainder of the northern summer.

Forecasters had detected a return of La Niña in late February, then the cooling slowed significantly during June. But forecaster Dennis Feltgen at the U.S. National Hurricane Center said the absence of La Niña doesn’t necessarily mean a less active hurricane season.

Rat Wall of China

A local government in central China’s Hunan province says it plans to erect a 25-mile-long wall to prevent future invasions from hoards of rats that are often driven into the region by floodwaters. Last week, an estimated 2 billion rats dug through earthen barriers around overflowing Dongting Lake to infest 22 Hunan counties. The Xinhua news agency reports that Lujiao Township is now prepared to build an expansive 3-foot-high wall to prevent such rodent invasions in the future. But ecological damage from human activity around the lake has been the main cause of the rat crisis, according to Zhang Chen, an official of the World Wide Fund for Nature. He told Xinhua that the decreasing number of the rat’s natural enemies, such as snakes and owls, has allowed the rodent population to explode. w

‘Standing on solid ground’ Savannah Music Festival turns the corner

Swing Central will be open to high school jazz bands nationwide, and promises to combine the long-standing traditions of jazz mentorship and school band competition into an experience that is both thrilling and educational for the musicians and audience members alike.

McMaken says Gibson and the festival’s Education and Program Manager Gene Pinion feel strongly that the workshops are “central to the mission of this project.”

“The SMF is devoted to musical traditions,” he continues. “As much as we strive to facilitate great collaborations, it’s equally important to push jazz tradition forward by putting a student on the piano bench next to a master like Marcus Roberts.”

McMaken admits that taking the festival into the black is “a great milestone,” and says he’s certain that a major weight was lifted from those who’ve been in the trenches for years. He calls being involved with an organization based on sound fiscal leadership “extremely reassuring.”

Yet he cautions those tempted to assume the SMF’s goals and direction will change drastically now that organizers have some small measure of security.

“Our programming choices definitely aren’t made based on our financial standings. The 2008 festival will feature several new commissioned works, and I think it can be expected that the event will continue to grow, stylistically,” McMaken says.

f it seems like Connect Savannah keeps regular tabs on the status of the Savannah Music Festival, that’s because we do.

The most consistently impressive and ambitious event of its kind in our area, it’s become one of the biggest annual draws for locals and tourists alike, and is in a very real way changing the world’s perception of our community’s commitment to the arts.

Thus, we’re happy to report that after several years of losing money (while earning accolades), the non-profit organization has finally turned the fiscal corner.

For the third consecutive year, the festival has generated an operating surplus (in this year’s case, they netted $123,000 on total ticket sales of $736,000).

Executive and Artistic Director Rob Gibson credits a combination of creative programming choices, successful marketing strategies, active board participation and sound fiscal management.

“This,” he says, “is a testament to worldclass musicians, dedicated audience members and donors, and a cohesive administrative team.”

ost folks who follow the Savannah music scene have likely heard of Baroness and Kylesa. Even if brutal modern metal isn’t their particular cup of tea, the regional, national and —of late— international acclaim those two groups have generated has resulted in name recognition that far exceeds their actual devoted fanbase.

That’s encouraging to Andrew Fidler of Black Tusk. Over the course of “more tours than (he) can count,” this locally-based power trio of guitar (Fidler), drums (James May) and bass (Athon — just Athon) has trod the same path as both of those groups.

They’ve played many of the same venues, made records in the same Columbia, S.C. studio, and been featured on the same bills.

Now, with the release this weekend of their latest CD EP, The Fallen Kingdom (and a brand-new full-length album almost ready to drop on respected ultra-indie label Hyperrealist), this self-professed “swamp metal” band seems poised to reap some measure of the same rewards as their more established brethren.

The eight-song EP, tracked last year at producer (and Kylesa member) Phil Cope’s familiar stomping grounds The Jam Room, clocks in at just over twenty-three minutes.

It’s that insistence on brevity over indulgence that Fidler feels may ultimately help Black Tusk to stand somewhat apart from the myriad of similar-sounding acts on the road today — although he’s quick to note that he and his bandmates aren’t particularly

worried about being lumped in with their competition in the first place.

“When it comes to song structure, there are a lot of bands that are real heavy, and then they take too many risks. They try to go on too long. As long as we structure our songs right, we won’t have that problem.”

Fidler explains that the EP, which was recorded last year, lingered for months in typical music industry limbo, until a deal was struck to release it independently with the help of one of their biggest supporters.

“We shopped it around to a bunch of indie labels, and some of them were really interested, but none wound up bidding on it, so the deals fell apart. We sat on it all this time, and finally John offered to do the cover art for us as well as put up half the manufacturing costs.”

He’s referring to John Baizley, guitarist and frontman for Baroness, whose intricate, gruesomely psychedelic pen-and-ink work is becoming all the rage in certain metal circles. His illustration skills are increasingly in high-demand for metal bands’ CD covers, T-shirts and stickers. In fact, he also drew the stunning EP cover for buzzworthy Ohio band Skeletonwitch, whom Black Tusk joins for a two-week Southeastern tour starting with this Saturday night’s show at The Jinx.

Fidler says that despite the fact that the band has another record coming out in less than two months, he feels this EP will generate a strong amount of interest, especially to those who value Baizley’s artwork.

“We’re making 300 copies, and after they’re gone, we won’t repress it. The recordings will float around forever, but the CD itself will be a real collector’s item.”

While the band’s previous tours have lasted for up to six weeks at a time and taken them as far West as Texas, as far North as New York City and as far South as Florida,

Fidler says they’re gearing up for a marathon trip that will take them all the way to the West Coast as support act for experimental Atlanta metal band Zoroaster.

For now, all the members of Black Tusk hold down the type of jobs which allow them to split and tour for weeks at a time: Athon is a master carpenter; James is a bartender; and Fidler is a landscaper.

“I’m actually sitting on a lawn mower right now,” he chuckles over the phone.

Yet, if these musicians have their way, they’ll make their livings playing metal.

“Work sucks. Definitely,” says Fidler.

“There’s not telling when it’ll happen, but that’s the plan. We’ll just keep working and playing shows until all we do is play.” w

Paradise lost? No such luck.

dents and visitors who’ve been forced to endure threatening, anti-social behavior at the hands of many of these bars’ regular patrons is astonishingly high.

A while back, a friend (who is white) decided he’d check out Frozen just to see what all the fuss was about. As he approached, ID out, an off-duty SPD officer (hired as club security) stopped him, saying, “I can’t guarantee your safety in there.”

Now, sadly, racism is nothing new to Savannah. In fact, many here on both sides of the proverbial “color line” have damn near perfected the art of acting like it doesn’t exist when it benefits them to do so, and crying foul when it behooves them.

Whether they’ll ever cop to it or not, the folks on that dais in City Hall are scared witless of appearing to come down on a blackowned business for what many whites (and blacks) perceive as a “black problem.” They desperately want to avoid dealing with the handful of clumsy, self-appointed “Rev. Al Juniors” who lie in wait, ready to pounce on our elected leaders in front of the cameras for (supposedly) screwing over a minority citizen where they’d otherwise let whitey slide.

Ideally, both clubs should have had their privilege to pour alcohol revoked ages ago for the myriad of problems caused by their lack of interest in controlling their rowdier, more vandalistic clientele.

Instead, the City spent enormous sums of money to block off large swaths of Broughton Street on weekend nights, diverting precious crime-fighting manpower to serve as crowd control, all in a shameful effort to make sure that passersby were not routinely harassed and/or assaulted by hopped-up wannabe gangstas flowing from that club, looking to impress.

its operations to the Oz location and —it appears— Oz will be allowed to move into the recently vacated Club Ice on Abercorn, once known as one of the best places in town to get shot and/or stabbed.

Instead of using the powers it has to simply refuse or revoke the license for this obvious blight on our nightlife, Council opted instead to approve the license, but add to it a set of ten ludicrous stipulations Alderwoman Edna Jackson hopes will soon be adopted for all bars in the city.

Those stipulations include such humdingers as “keeping minors out” (a law they’re already required to abide by) and “making the club owner available to talk to neighboring businesses to discuss problems.”

Forcing Frozen’s owners to chat with the very neighbors who pleaded with Council to deny the license is a real hoot.

I’ve watched firsthand how the owners of these two establishments nonsensically berate the Council with demands of special privilege. To think Otis and his crew would impose such a fate on innocent bystanders smacks of outright malice.

“We are putting some restrictions on these folk, and if we are going to do this, we have to do it for everybody,” the Mayor said Thursday. I would tend to agree.

The only problem is you never should have done it in the first place. You should have just shut ‘em down and wiped your hands of the whole mess.

It’s worth the wait

his past Thursday, Savannah’s City Council was unusually productive. They somehow managed to A) flush a wonderful opportunity down the toilet, B) expose themselves as spineless, and C) flip the collective bird to most of the responsible bar, tavern and nightclub owners in town.

And all this before they even cast their votes. It’s enough to make one’s head spin.

I’m referring of course to the supremely cowardly maneuver of approving a liquor license for the new Indian Street location of Frozen Paradise — a location that was until just recently home to Club Oz. For those of you who never venture into Historic Downtown’s so-called “entertainment zone” after dark: both of these establishments have been something of a bane on this area for years now. I hate to come across as overly judgemental, but facts are facts, and just because everyone else seems to have blinders on and a gag in their mouth doesn’t mean I have to.

Frozen and Oz (which appear to have shared owners and management in the past, and still enjoy a cozy relationship) have a well-deserved rep as two of the roughest, most off-putting bars in town.

Between the two businesses, they’ve regularly racked up more than their fair share of police calls due to violent, aggressive behavior both on their premises and surrounding public and private property. By design, their clientele is primarily young and black (or “urban” if you must insulate yourself even further from reality), which is not a problem whatsoever.

The problem is the thugs.

Thug culture —and its dear friend gang culture— is color-blind, and in Savannah we most definitely have our share of thuggish, antagonistic, macho sociopaths of all skin tones who enjoy hardcore gangsta rap, drugrunning and verbal and physical intimidation as a means of sadly stunted sexual posturing. This locally-based funk/soul and R & B party band has gone through a few lineup changes since their inception a little over 2 years back, but they’ve persevered and have become one of the busier and well-liked acts on the area bar, club and restaurant circuit.

Fronted by lead vocalist Leslie Gadson (whose sultry and freeform approach to the band’s material has as much to do with their appeal as the loose-limbed and sympathetic backing she receives from her facile bandmates), they appear regularly at Tantra on Broughton St. and Casimir’s Lounge in the Mansion on Forsyth Park, but this laidback, beachside Caribbean eatery in the shadow of the Tybee’s Lighthouse is where they got their start and it remains something of a home base for the group to this day.

One of the few places with live entertainment on Sunday nights, if the weather’s nice it’s a great, breezy place to hang, grab a beer or frozen drink and catch some of the area’s better party bands on an outdoor stage.

This living legend of outlaw country music is a prolific and respected songwriter.

One of the better (and most promising) original bands to ever emerge from our local scene, this reggae and hip-hop hybrid rarely plays in town, because they’re busy on the

Starting from the same basic templates as iconic innovators like 311 and Sublime, this rock-solid act works hard to put their own stamp on rasta-fied groove music, and the result is a distinctly contemporary vibe that —if anything— is reminiscent of the kind of world-beat vibe being mined of late

‘Rod-A-Billy Riot’

Anytime there’s a 5-band bill of cowpunk and rockabilly held alongside a car and motorcycle show —focusing on pre-’67 vintage vehicles— it’s certainly worth hyping. Masquers’ summer “Encore” program closes with Arsenic & Old Lace

I

t’s not only the Masquers’ summer season that comes to a close with the end of their next play, Arsenic and Old Lace.

One of the most intriguing experiments in Savannah theatre history will come to a close as well.

The staging of the Joseph Kesselring’s classic dark comedy by the Armstrong Atlantic State University theatre group comes right before their home base at the Jenkins Theatre closes for at least a year for extensive renovations.

Still, the venue went out with a bang, as the Masquers decided to stage as much theatre as possible in it while they could. Specifically, a madcap run of four shows in rapid sequence with no break between them, collectively dubbed “Encore”: The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), The Bad Seed, Parallel Lives and this weekend’s Arsenic and Old Lace.

April Soroko, a part-time design sequence instructor, acted as self-described “facilitator” for the “Encore” season, which was actually carried out almost totally by the Masquers themselves.

“We were all initially thinking the building would be shut down at the beginning of summer, but then we discovered that’s not the case,” Soroko explains.

“I was approached by Pete Mellen, head of the theatre department here. He felt like it was a great opportunity for students to do some important work on their own,” she says.

“And also, because the theatre will shut down at the end of the summer, this was the last opportunity students had to work in that space before the space is gutted and redone.”

Busbin says that even from a logstical standpoint, the “Encore” season was a case study in serendipity.

“We said, ‘OK, we’ve got the whole summer with this theatre, so what can we do in

that time?’ Luckily for us, with Bad Seed and Arsenic and Old Lace we were able to use the set from Three Cornered Moon,” she says, referring to a performance early in 2007 that reprised the very first Masqers’ show in 1937.

“That was designed by a designer from New York, so we were very lucky to be able to still have that available,” Busbin says.

“And for The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) and Parallel Lives, they required no set at all.”

Busbin says the summer season has been a priceless experience for all involved.

“It’s been a class for all of us. It’s basically been a theatre lab, that’s what we’re calling it,” she says. “It’s all of us working together on every single play.”

Soroko echoes that with her simple explanation as to how the Masquers were able to pull off the daunting “Encore” season.

“It’s a family over there. Students know each other so well, they work long hours and they’re so hungry for opportunity,” she says.

“With very little resources they can pull it off and make it look professional. Because there’s so few faculty at Armstrong, students get so much opportunity in taking on big responsibilitys. These are all students making sure everything’s right — sound cues, light cues, props, building sets.”

Soroko says the Masquers continue their tradition of opening auditions to the entire

community, though the bulk of participants are indeed connected to AASU. “At least 80 percent of participants in the shows are affiliated with the university in some way, but we do have a wide variety of students – two are pursing masters in education, and there’s one nontraditional student working on a bachelors in education with a minor in theatre.”

Soroko, who leaves soon to take a position with the University of Miami in the fall, says the future is bright for theatre not only in Savannah, but nationwide.

“Theatre’s not unlike sports in that it builds community. When people feel there’s a void and they’re not able to get out and connect, then they make the theatre happen,” she says.

be using a temporary space in Armstrong Center around the corner, sometimes simply referred to as “the old Publix,” a reference to the supermarket once occupying the spot.

Arsenic and Old Lace deals with the hapless Mortimer Brewster, a longtime bachelor who brings his new bride to meet his two aunts. But he gradually discovers that the two ladies — so sweet on the surface — have a strange affinity for performing involuntary euthanasia on people, using a concoction of elderberry wine, arsenic and cyanide.

The play was made into a hit movie in 1944 starring Cary Grant as Mortimer.

This weekend, Susan Jackson and Gail Byrd play the two crazy aunts, Abby and Martha Brewster, while the versatile veteran Ben Wolfe plays Mortimer.

AASU senior Jamie Busbin is directing the Masquers’ stage version of the beloved classic.

“I wanted to breathe a little life as far as casting, but it’s such a great script that I didn’t want to stray too far from it. That would be doing a disservice to the audience, — many of whom are familiar with the Cary Grant movie,” Busbin explains. “I want to give it some new life, to make it fresh, but still keep true to the story.”

The secret to the story’s success, the director says, is that “We all realize that someone crazy is in everyone’s family. That’s why

ne of the most powerful and stirring genres of the Christian musical tradition, Byzantine choir music encompasses the evocative mystery and poignant grandeur so central to the Eastern Orthodox tradition.

To the layperson’s ear it sounds similar to the more commonly known Gregorian chanting, but while Byzantine liturgical singing is every bit as old it has a more dramatic and exotic flavor. This unique character is primarily due to its intricate Eastern scales and methods of harmonizing the voices, which typically sing in Greek rather than Latin.

Wielding the baton at the performance will be acclaimed conductor Christopher Kypros, a composer in his own right and currently choir director for the Annunciation Cathedral in Norfolk, Va. Now employed by the city of Toledo, Ohio, Zervos himself will come to Savannah to accompany the combined choir on organ as they perform his work. We spoke with Zervos last week about his Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom.

What’s unique about your version?

Chris Zervos: First off, I chose to do it bilingually. I was of course told it couldn’t be done, that one could not put classical Greek and modern spoken English into the same musical score. But I discovered that by using some creative musical notation that it could indeed be done.

Why would it be so difficult to combine the two languages in one work?

Chris Zervos: There’s a real linguistics problem, because classical Greek has a syntax and structure that frequently is antithetical to English. Also Byzantine music is written with the emphasis on the hymn text, whereas the western world would tend to recognize the melodic line.

Byzantine music is kind of like Byzantine art: What you see is what you get. For example, if you’re referring to heaven, the line runs up. If you refer to earth, the line runs down.

Without sounding spiritualist, there were moments when I sat in my office that I felt a presence beyond only myself. I had to work quietly on this, because I worked at night into the wee hours of morning and didn’t want to wake everyone in the house. Finally when I was able to play the music back I was shocked at what I was hearing. It’s very emotional.

The Orthodox church is often criticized for being too intellectual. But the more you really study the faith, the more you see that it actually has a quite rich and multilayered emotional foundation.

HAIRSPRAY 1/2

For over a decade, John Waters had been unleashing some of the most outrageous movies ever made before deciding to tentatively test the waters of mainstream cinema -- or at least as mainstream as this flagrantly maverick filmmaker could attempt. His tepid 1981 offering Polyester was met with a stone wall of shrugs, even with the gimmick of being presented in Odorama (patrons were given scratch ‘n’ sniff cards that, if memory serves, stank like sour milk no matter what number was scratched off). But his 1988 offering, Hairspray, was another story: An instant critical and cult success, it eventually was turned into a smash Broadway musical and has now been brought back to the screen, with the added songs intact. It’s one of this summer’s few out-and-out delights, smoothing out but never compromising the issues that made Waters’ original film such a quirky delight. An ode to being different, Hairspray stars delightful newcomer Nikki Blonsky as Tracy Turnblad, an overweight teenager who won’t let her pleasantly plump figure get in the way of following her dream in 1960s Baltimore. And her dream is to become famous, preferably by

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix



Those who like their Potter black will find much to appreciate in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the fifth and moodiest of the J.K. Rowling adaptations to date. Chris Columbus’ first two entries -- both underrated -- focused mainly on fun and games, with the subsequent installments helmed by Alfonso Cuaron and Mike Newell taking on decidedly darker dimensions. The level of malevolence is raised even further here, thanks to the taut direction by unknown David Yates and a forceful performance by series lead Daniel Radcliffe.

Between the last film (Goblet of Fire) and

showing off her dance moves on The Corny Collins Show, a local American Bandstand-style program that’s a hit with the kids. Her obese mom Edna (John Travolta in drag) is afraid her daughter will get hurt, but her dad Wilbur (a warm Christopher Walken) encourages her to go for it. Impressing Corny Collins himself (X-Men’s James Marsden), not to mention the show’s reigning pinup star Link Larkin (Zac Efron), Tracy does indeed land a coveted spot on the show, much to the disgust of Link’s girlfriend Amber Von Tussle (Brittany Snow) and her wicked mom Velma (Michelle Pfeiffer). The movie’s first and foremost a musical, and director Adam Shankman does a commendable job of filming the song-and-dance routines in a manner that accentuates the total skills involved (the noticeable lack of rapid MTV-style cuts is greatly appreciated). The weakest cast link is, perhaps surprisingly, Travolta, who may have enjoyed returning to his movie musical roots (Saturday Night Fever, Grease) but nevertheless fails to adequately fill the large shoes of the late Divine, who was simply, well, divine in Waters’ ‘88 screen version.

this new one, it’s startling to note how the actor and the character seem to have aged multiple years, a testament to the maturity and intensity that Radcliffe brings to the role. Villainy abounds in The Order of the Phoenix, with Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) haunting Harry’s every move, a fluttering fascist named Dolores Umbridge (Imelda Staunton) taking over the Hogwarts school, and an escaped prisoner known as Bellatrix Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter) arriving late to kill off a popular character. Add to those threats Harry’s issues of abandonment and estrangement, and it’s no wonder the lad can’t keep those roiling emotions in check. In this respect, Phoenix operates not only as a story-specific fantasy flick but also as a universal teen angst tale, a far-

flung Rebel Without a Cause in which the protagonist tries to comprehend the adult world he’s on the verge of entering while simultaneously struggling to cut the umbilical cord of childhood. Because of this slant, this emerges as the most dramatic of the five films to date, with betrayals coming from both memories (a flashback involving Harry’s dad and professor Severus Snape, again played by Alan Rickman, is startling in its implications) and mortals (Judas, must you betray me with a kiss?) only serving to drive the nail into Harry’s splintered psyche even deeper. Fortunately, Harry’s friends won’t leave him alone -- even when he’s surly toward them -- and he receives a muchneeded support system from best buds Ron

You Kill Me 

Perhaps not since Jack Nicholson in 1985’s Prizzi’s Honor has any actor so solidly struck the funny bone portraying a hit man as Ben Kingsley does in You Kill Me. The film’s premise initially makes it sound like a cutesy variation on the type of pseudo-hip crime flicks churned out on a monthly basis

by Tarantino wannabes: Mob assassin Frank Falenczyk (Kingsley) was once at the top of his game, but in recent times he’s fallen so deeply under the spell of the bottle that he now drunkenly sleeps through his assignments. His boss (Philip Baker Hall) sends him to San Francisco to sober up; there, he lands a job at a funeral home, attends AA meetings under the tutelage of a gay sponsor (Luke Wilson), and strikes up an offbeat relationship with a sharp-tongued woman (Tea Leoni) who doesn’t seem particularly disturbed by his line of work. You Kill Me feels like a lightweight throwaway, but it remains in the memory longer than expected, thanks to the freewheeling direction by John Dahl (The Last Seduction), a killer-quippacked script by the team of Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (the guys adapting the family-friendly Chronicles of

Narnia franchise to the screen!), and a sterling cast fronted by a perfectly cast Kingsley, who in this film manages to elicit chuckles with just his terse facial expressions.

License to Wed 

Mandy Moore has managed to costar in the two worst films of 2007 (thus far), yet let’s not be in a hurry to pick up those stones and torches. Truth be told, Moore is turning out to be a welcome screen presence -- far better than most recent singersturned-actors -- and she’s hardly to blame for either the rancid Because I Said So or the toxic-waste comedy License to Wed. The heir presumptive to last summer’s You, Me and Dupree, this new film, offensive in its idiocy, similarly places loathsome characters in absurd situations that are meant to give off a funky black-comedy vibe yet instead reek only of desperation as well as the limitations of comically challenged minds. Under the disinterested supervision of director Ken Kwapis, four writers jerry-rig a premise that finds newly engaged couple Ben Murphy (John Krasinski) and Sadie Jones (Moore) forced to pass a marriage preparation course supervised by the Jones family’s longtime minister, Reverend Frank (Robin Williams).

Along the way, Reverend Frank, aided by his young apprentice (Josh Flitter, as annoying here as he was in Nancy Drew), bugs the couple’s bedroom, embarrasses Ben in front of his future in-laws, and drives Sadie

away from her fiance. Sharp scripting could have given Frank the balance required to make him an apt comic foil, but here he’s simply creepy, a problem expounded by the casting of Robin Williams.

Williams is in his manic, whoring mode here, an approach well past its expiration date in terms of actually resembling anything funny or topical. (One bit finds Williams making a joke about O.J. Simpson; heck, why not cracks about the Pentagon Papers or Rosie the Riveter or even the invention of the light bulb?) Williams has made so many one-star comedies that it’s impossible to keep count at this point. But rest assured that there’s a multiplex in hell that screens them on a perpetual loop.

and his posse carry out their master plans. Marked for termination, Matt is only able to escape his would-be assassins with McClane’s help. An overlong running time allows matters to occasionally become stale (the blueprint calls for our protagonists to evade, fight, escape, repeat), although Willis does his part by tossing out those patented McClane quips with aplomb. And while there’s no denying that the picture is packed with memorable action sequences, the film often collapses into a heap of silliness, with McClane surviving some encounters that would tax all sorts of leaps of logic.

For whatever reason -- fat paycheck, wavering career, poor choice of available roles -- Bruce Willis has elected to return to his signature role as John McClane, and the end result is better than most years-afterthe-fact sequels (Rocky Balboa, The Evening Star, Crocodile Dundee In Los Angeles). The twist here is that aging detective McClane, an old-fashioned guy used to 20th century modes of expression and ideas, finds himself battling cyber-terrorists who threaten to shut down the entire United States with a few strokes of a keyboard. The movie’s billing itself as the story of an “analog” cop living in a “digital” age, and we all know what that means. No mouse pads or monitors for our hero; instead, it’s all flying fists, rapidfire weaponry and explosions. Lots of explosions. Yet even director Len Wiseman and scripter Mark Bomback don’t have complete faith in the cop’s old-fashioned heroics since they saddle him with a sidekick who’s a genius when it comes to computers. Matt Farrell ( Justin Long, the “Mac” guy in those ubiquitous Apple commercials) is a Neoinspired hacker who inadvertently helps the villain (an effective Timothy Olyphant)

Sicko1/2

As with past works by this controversial filmmaker, Michael Moore proves himself to be more a professor with some fanciful ways of explaining the matter at hand than a documentarian in the strictest sense of the term: He often places himself at the center of the spotlight, and he lets details fall by the wayside in his rush to accentuate the greater truth. Sicko, Moore’s take on the American health care crisis, is no different: One can quibble about the presentation or the softpedaling of certain points, but there’s no doubt that Moore’s heart is in the right place, or that, in a just world, his powerful picture would serve as an agent for change.

Moore employs his latest film as a bludgeoning tool against insidious insurance companies and the corrupt politicians who let them get away with murder -- often literally.

Moore doesn’t focus on the nation’s uninsured; instead, he centers on ordinary folks who do carry insurance yet are still denied basic rights by those more concerned with lining their own pockets than helping out their fellow Americans. Thus, we see how a grieving mother loses her baby daughter because her HMO forces her to seek help not at the closest hospital but at one further

Ratatouille 1/2

Cinema has given us so many marvelous movies set around the kitchen that it’s easy to lose count among the tantalizing dishes laid out on display. But onto a long list that includes Babette’s Feast, Eat Drink Man Woman, and Like Water for Chocolate, I never expected to add an animated yarn about a culinary rat. Ratatouille is the latest winner from Pixar, the animation outfit whose win-loss ratio has still managed to equal that of the ‘72 Miami Dolphins. Here, a dreamy rat who tries to get along with his more conventional family while also attempting the impossible (and the taboo) by forging a friendship with a human. The rat is Remy (voiced by Patton Oswalt), whose skills in the kitchen are exemplary, and the human is Linguini (Lou Romano), a skinny lad who possesses none of his late father’s superb culinary abilities. Since restaurant kitchens aren’t exactly rodent-friendly, and since circumstances force the singularly untalented Linguini to pass himself off as a master chef, the pair pool their resources to return a once-great Paris eatery, now struggling following the publication of a disastrous review by food critic Anton Ego (Peter O’Toole), back to its lofty position as one of France’s finest. As always seems to be the case with Pixar, the animation in Ratatouille far surpasses that of CGI imagery from competing studios, with characters emerging as fully formed, three-dimensional players (or as three-dimensional as cartoon characters can get). The attention to detail is startling, and there are some angles that may be commonplace in live-action features but are rarely attempted in toon flicks (I especially love the pen dropping).

Transformers 

A movie about robots that turn into cars (and trucks and tanks and airplanes) would seem to have a more limited fan base than

many other blockbuster wanna-bes, and the presence of Michael Bay (Armageddon, Pearl Harbor) as director certainly puts critics on alert. Yet perhaps the secret ingredient here is in the producing credits. Instead of Bay’s usual partner in crime, Jerry Bruckheimer, it’s Steven Spielberg who snags an executive producer citation, so it can’t be a coincidence that in its finest moments -- most contained within the first half of this 145minute yarn -- this picture harkens back to the sort of filmic roller coaster rides that Spielberg often built during the 80s. What makes the initial hour-and-change so enjoyable is the expository material that former Alias scripters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman bring to the table. After quickly explaining that two sets of intergalactic robots -- the heroic Autobots and the nefarious Decepticons -- have brought their battle to our planet, we’re introduced to various groups of characters who will eventually gather to help the good ‘bots defeat the evil ones. Chief among the human protagonists is Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf), a teenager who’s so busy wooing a lovely classmate (Megan Fox) that he’s slow to realize that there’s more than meets the eye about his new Chevy Camaro. Meanwhile, in Qatar, two members (Tyrese Gibson and Josh Duhamel) of an army outfit find themselves trying to stay alive from the metallic menace that has wiped out their entire base. And back in Washington the U.S. Secretary of Defense (Jon Voight) tries to figure out what’s going on with the help of a computer analyst (Rachael Taylor) and her “advisor,” a computer hacker (Anthony Anderson). Bolstered by ample amounts of humor (a popular comedian makes an early appearance as a car salesman) and decidedly more character-driven than expected, Transformers for the most part does a fine job of balancing action with emotion, which makes the final half-hour -- wall to wall battles with little to individualize the raging robots on either side -- a bit of a slog. Still, it’s a given that Transformers fans won’t be disappointed. The shock is that the rest of us might not be, either.

Evan Almighty 

There’s not much to this film aside from shaky CGI effects, timid moralizing, and

the sight of Steve Carell spinning his wheels in a role that fails to draw upon the immense comic talents displayed in The 40Year-Old Virgin, Little Miss Sunshine and even his brief stint in the Paul Lynde role in the disastrous screen version of Bewitched.

Playing the same part he essayed in Bruce Almighty, that of self-centered TV news anchor Evan Baxter, Carell immediately finds himself neutered by director Tom Shadyac and his passel of writers, as his character has morphed into a typical movie dad who places his own career above the needs of his wife (Lauren Graham) and children. Having been elected to Congress on the platform that he’ll “change the world,” Evan now finds his hands full delivering on that promise when God (returning Morgan Freeman) appears and instructs him to build an ark.

A fairly effective creepshow in which our protagonist only has to worry about a haunted room. But what a room! Hack writer Mike Enslin (an excellent John Cusack) has built a career penning guide books on supposedly haunted locales across America, and after years of doing so, he realizes, with the same level of smugness as Hilary Swank’s mythbuster in The Reaping, that there are no such things as ghosts and goblins and gremlins and golems. So when he receives a postcard from the Dolphin Hotel in New York telling him not to enter the establishment’s room 1408, he scoffs at the warning but elects to check it out anyway. His arrival is met with resistance by Gerald Olin (Samuel L. Jackson), the hotel manager. At first, the spooky proceedings are kept on a low-key simmer. But scripters Matt Greenberg, Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski don’t just adapt Stephen King’s short story; they stick a helium needle into it and expand it to grotesque proportions.

away. We gasp at how one man is turned down for an operation, only to result in his death several months later. We witness how a laborer who has accidentally cut off two of his fingers is told that, because of financial considerations, he has to decide which finger he wants to keep and which digit he can live without. And so on. Not surprisingly, Moore’s solution on how to wrest this nation away from the hands of the insurance companies, lobbyists and politicians is to provide universal health care for everyone. Moore then traces, in often amusing fashion, how the Republicans gasp at such a notion, calling it “socialized medicine” and linking it back to the Communists. Yet Moore also saves some barbs for Hillary Clinton, who once tried to tackle the health care issue (yet was beaten down by GOP misogynists like Newt Gingrich) but is now only too happy to accept campaign contributions from the health industry lobby. And in a brilliant bit, Moore wonders why the right-wing is so adamant against “socialized medicine” when we already have other “socialized” advantages (fire department, schools, libraries, etc.).
