Long Live the King What: The Friends of King Oliver, the Friends of AfricanAmerican Arts and the Savannah Music Festival present two events celebrating the legacy of renowned musician Joe “King” Oliver. The first-generation New Orleans jazz artist died in Savannah on April 10, 1938. He is known as the mentor of Louis Armstrong. A commemorative plaque will be unveiled, and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis will play a tribute to King Oliver and his place in jazz history at the ceremony. The following day, jazz historian Dr. Julius “Boo” Hornstein will present a lecture, The King in Exile, about Oliver’s last days in Savannah. The lecture will include visuals of the jazz scene and life along Old West Broad Street. When: The unveiling of the plaque will take place March 24 at 3 p.m. at 514 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., very near the place where Oliver lived and worked. The lecture will be presented Sunday, March 25 at 11 a.m. at the Jepson Center for the Arts. Cost: Free and open to the public.

The Dolphin Project

What: An introduction to the work of this-volunteer organization, which explores the waters of coastal Georgia to record the habitats and activities of the Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin, will be presented. Still superlative

Master instrumentalist and country legend Marty Stuart plays the Savannah Music Festival

A

t not quite 50 years of age, Grand Ole Opry member Marty Stuart has distinguished himself as one of the most capable and diverse talents in the fields of both traditional and contemporary country music.

From his earliest days as a dazzling, preteen guitar and mandolin prodigy, through his glory days as one of the leading figures in the short-lived (but highly influential) New Hillbilly movement of the 1980s that also included Dwight Yoakam and The Brother Boys, and into the present as leader of the aptly named Fabulous Superlatives, to many worldwide, Stuart’s name has become synonymous with high quality string-band and honky-tonk music.

There are also plenty of folks who know Stuart’s look, if not his records. His flamboyant Nudie-style stage outfits and shock of once-black (now more salt than pepper) hair serve nicely as a defiant visual trademark.

While his last record with The Superlatives (a live CD taped at Nashville’s famed Ryman Auditorium) found the group eschewing their amps for a stripped-down set of old-time bluegrass (something Stuart’s

teenage tenure in Lester Flatt’s band more than prepared him for), their live shows vary according to their mood, and are some of the least predictable in a business increasingly known for homogenized stage patter by artists whose material is dictated by market surveys and image consultants.

Stuart — a past president of the Country Music Association who’s been married for years to legendary C&W vocalist Connie Smith— is a wandering spirit with several artistic irons always in the fire, so it should come as no surprise that our conversation drifted quickly to include a wide variety of creative projects on his horizon.

If you’ll give me a moment, I just need to get my recorder on so I don’t mis-quote you.

Marty Stuart: Well, that’s fine. I understand, and I appreciate it. I saw a great photograph one time — you’ve probably seen it, too. It’s a picture of President Nixon sitting at his desk. I actually recall seeing it in the bathroom at a recording studio. The caption says, “You can never be too careful.” (laughs)

Well, I’m sure Nixon could have learned to be a lot more careful when tape was rolling.

Marty Stuart: (laughs) You know it! Me myself, I’ve learned never to be careful. (laughs) So, where are you calling me from?

Marty Stuart: Bed. I must say I never expected to be talking to Marty Stuart in bed. I know that your band the Superlatives...

Marty Stuart: The Fabulous Superlatives.

Yes —the most Fabulous Superlatives— features the incredible Kenny Vaughan on guitar. I saw his punk trio play at a small club in East Nashville a few years ago.

Marty Stuart: (laughs) Kenny’s got a thousand bands, and they’re all good.

You’ve been in many, many bands yourself over the years, but this group seem to be the most versatile you’ve fronted. This exact lineup has been the same all along, right?

Marty Stuart: We’ve been together goin’ on five years. We have a deal where if any one of us leaves, we all quit. I could just never imagine the Fabulous Superlatives being anybody other than who they are right now.

I started my first band when I was nine, and without question, this is the best band I’ve ever had — simply because they’re modern masters in every sense of the word.

How did you come to put this group together?

Marty Stuart: I had taken a couple of years off the road, and it was time to suit back up and go back to work. I’d bumped into Kenny somewhere along the way at a Nashville event, and actually, I’d never met him before.

I’d seen him play on TV a bunch, though, with Lucinda Williams. We had a bite to eat one day, and I just said, “You go find us a bass player and I’ll try to find us a drum-

mer.” So, I called Harry Stinson. People had been trying to get him back out on the road for years, but he had gotten really burned out from his time with Steve Earle. He’d really dug down deep, just playing close to home and being with his family.

But it turned out he was willing to go back out on tour! Kenny had seen Brian (Glenn) play with Billy Walker at the Grand Ole Opry, and so we were kinda holding out.

I knew Harry and I could sing together, so we staged this audition at a church over in West Nashville for a few days. A couple different bass players tried out, but the minute Brian came in and sang, we knew that was it.

I took him down in the basement and asked him what his daily rate was. He said, “I don’t have one,” and I said, “Well, you do now!” From that day on, I knew we had the makings of a truly great band.

Marty Stuart: Both! (laughs) I mean, I’ve noticed that when the Superlatives play certain places, the wings are always packed with other players who are watching the band really closely. Then later, I’ll see people change their bands to reflect the structure we have. I’m not bragging about it. That’s the just the truth and the focus of the deal. See, we put a lot of thought into streamlining our stage setup.

For instance, we noticed that when we started playing at the Grand Ole Opry, it seemed like Harry was a million miles behind us, because everybody there plays drums behind that big Plexiglas shield.

We’re a lot more like a jazz combo who works best being up close, right next to each other. Playing that other way, we lost our groove. So, Harry invented this cocktailtype drum so he could stand right up there

with us.

We also got rid of a few mics so we could gather together like a gospel or traditional bluegrass group. These days, I see more and more acts that are following that lead. continued on page 8

Marty Stuart: When I’m trying to find people to play with, I tend to look for more of a feelin’. My heart winds up speaking for me.

Finding the right player is like seeing an old friend. “Well, there. Where have you been?”

Have there ever been difficult times where someone had to be coaxed into staying and keeping the band together?

Marty Stuart: Not one. Never, never, never, never. There has not been one cross word between us. See, the other important aspect of all this is that this band wasn’t founded on, “Hey, we gotta be the cutest guys on the block and have a radio hit.” It’s way beyond that for us.

This group is more about being musical statesmen and cultural missionaries. We held hands and prayed on it and asked for divine guidance on top of the pure joy and pure love and respect that you find between great players. When you take all that cantankerous crap out of it and insist on making it just about the music, it’s absolutely amazing what can happen.

How rare is it for you to have been involved in a project that’s been a success right off the bat?

Marty Stuart: Well, I’ve been a part of other people’s bands as a sideman. I think one of the best I was ever a part of was with Doc and Merle Watson and T. Michael Coleman.

Wow, that was heavenly. That music was off the chart, that’s how special it was. And I was only with them for about six months!

But it was a magical combination.

Sometimes those things happen and they last for a whole tour, or just for one incredible night. But never like this. This is the office. The guys. The club. I don’t know how we could find ourselves in this position if we tried. We just don’t pay too much attention to the outcome. We just do. And I gotta say that I see a lotta people followin’.

Do you mean people who are trying to play the same sort of music, or just aiming for a similar internal dynamic in their groups?

Marty Stuart: I know I haven’t played there with this band. To tell the truth, I can’t remember when the last time was I was in Savannah. A friend of mine who used to run the Ryman came down there and helped get the Lucas Theater going, and I dropped by once and kinda poked my head in the door and checked the place out to wish him well.

I can tell you one thing, though: I’m really looking forward to coming and playing that town. I dearly love Savannah.

What in particular do you love about it?

Marty Stuart: Well, that Southern atmosphere. Oxford, Miss., actually comes to my mind. They both share that sort of creative, literary charm. It just drips off the trees down there. Plus, you know you can always get a reputable glass of iced tea in either place! (laughs) I have a book of your photography, and a lot of folks may not know that’s a passion of yours as well. Have you considered doing a follow up to that book?

Marty Stuart: I’m actually putting the finishing touches on the next one. It’s called Country Music: The Masters. I’m doing an artist’s proof in June that’ll be a few thousand copies, all hand-bound and handsigned.

I also have a Tennessee State Museum exhibit coming up around the same time that’s called Sparkle and Twang: Marty’s American Odyssey. It should be between 5,500 and 6,000 square feet of music memorabilia from my personal collection.

Will the new book be all portraiture?

Marty Stuart: It’s portraits of artists, people, places and things. Treasures of country music from the golden age. From Jimmy Rodgers and the Carter family up through the death of Johnny Cash.

It’s interesting you set those bookends of country music’s golden age. Do you feel that when Johnny passed we saw the end of an era?

Marty Stuart: Well, not so much. It’s still alive and well. I mean, I’m married to one of the greatest country singers ever, and I just produced a new album by Porter Wagoner for a punk rock label called Anti- Records.

Are you trying to do for Porter what Rick Rubin did for Johnny Cash, and Jack White did for Loretta Lynn — introduce these amazing talents to a new generation of listeners?

Marty Stuart: The answer is probably yeah.

But it’ll go deeper. You know, I played on just about all of those American Recordings.

I was there from the get-go, when I saw that career being redesigned.

But there’s a big difference between Cash and Porter. Cash really was a pop star. He knew how to move the mechanics of stardom and he was truly a masterful showman.

He understood that it would be cool to stick a Nine Inch Nails song on his setlist.

Porter, on the other hand, is a pure, pure, pure country guy. He couldn’t sing a pop song if his life depended on it! He’s a remnant of the old cloth. One of the Hank Williams guys. To me, his pop appeal is that he simply won’t go there!

What Jack did for Loretta, well, good for them. It was cool. But with this project, I ran as far in the other direction as I could. I didn’t want to try and make a rock star out of Porter, ‘cause he’s already been one for years.

He’s a secret rock star.

Marty Stuart: Exactly. He’s not overexposed in that world. I took him to the Grammys one time and he just walked out on stage and melted the crowd. We opened for Neko Case a little while ago. Just the two of us on stage. He did “Satisfied Mind” and “Rubber Room”, and the kids loved it.

Then Billy Bob Thornton and Dwight Yoakam came out and joined us for a few songs. Dwight actually played bass, and he’s never played a bass in his life! (laughs) We did “Green, Green Grass of Home” with Billy Bob on drums.

This double-bill of underrated Peach State singer/songwriters (both of whom have flirted with stardom and maintain devoted cult followings worldwide) is one of the few SMF shows this year which comes even close to rocking. The resurgence of interest in Old-Time U.S. mountain music has birthed scores of acoustic acts which base their sound around brittle “high and lonesome” vocal harmonies and deft fretwork on such traditional instruments as fiddle, mandolin, dulcimer, guitar, banjo and upright bass. The best pay tribute to the glorious, earthy past of these Appalachian pocket symphonies while nudging the genre ever-so-slightly into the present day. This group of female musicians exemplifies that devout —yet progressive— dynamic. This show (co-sponsored

Yet, all signs point to this being one of the “can’t miss” performances. Drawing on the combined talents of the Pacific Chorale’s John Alexander Singers (a select chamber group from Southern California), Musica Angelica (the Golden State’s premier period instrument orchestra) and the Wiener Akademie (an internationally celebrated Austrian symphony specializing in lesser known works), this work presents the Biblical text of Matthew 26-27 as a recitative — but also adds arias and ariosos which give commentary on the original narrative.

Here’s how hot a performer Dianne Reeves is: At one of her Friday night sets at the Lucas, she got a standing ovation -- in the middle of her third song.

Introduced by Rob Gibson as “the last one left” -- sole heiress to the legacy of Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald -- Reeves channeled the greatness of all three, while retaining her own deeply human and accessible personal warmth.

Blessed with the rare ability to sing frankly about love and sexuality without crossing the line into vulgarity, Reeves made every person in the near sold-out house feel like they just walked in from the rain into a tiny, warm jazz club off some Manhattan side street.

Resplendent in black and teetering uneasily on stiletto heels, Reeves shut her eyes as she improvised, her crack trio watching every bat of her eyelashes for cues.

Her mic was jacked up so hot that she held it at waist level most of the show; rarely did it get within pecking distance of her lips. Still, not a nuance of that honeydrenched yet powerful voice was lost.

Sensitive though her band is to Reeves’s ever-changing vocal colors, they’re monsters in their own right. Peter Martin -- whom Reeves described in her delightfully sung band introductions as her “right hand and her left hand” -- was as at ease playing delicate runs on the piano as he was grinding out straight-up R&B on his Rhodes. Bassist Reuben Rogers not only bowed his acoustic but played slap-funk on an electric at one point. And stickman Greg Hutchinson gave a clinic on how to play aggressively without overshadowing the vocalist.

There’s only a handful of performers on this earth that can follow Dianne Reeves -and Susan Tedeschi is not one of them.

Though the charming and undeniably talented young blues singer/guitarist was definitely appreciated by her many vocal fans at this concert, she came off as being not quite ready for prime time. She spent much of the concert alternating between asking her band which song to play next, adjusting her amplifier, stepping on pedals or dashing to the mic late for vocal cues.

Whether her discomfort was due to following a genius like Reeves, or the fact that she was playing with husband Derek Trucks’s band and not her own, or the pressure for her to turn down her guitar after the first set -- or all three factors -- I don’t know.

But Tedeschi didn’t seem really comfort-

able until over halfway in, when she finally put down the Les Paul that was weighing down her tiny body and picked up a Telecaster -- a guitar lighter both in sound and in weight.

Like they say, all’s well that ends well.

Flook

Here’s a tip for you: If you have a choice between seeing an Irish band’s last set on St. Patrick’s Day or their next-to-last set on St. Patrick’s Day -- pick the last set!

Not to say that concertgoers at Flook’s early 7:30 p.m. show had any reason to be disappointed at how Brian Finnegan and Mike McGoldrick weaved the mystical sound of their woodwinds amongst the rock-solid rhythms of guitarist Ed Boyd and John Joe Kelly, the Jimi Hendrix of the bodhran, or Irish drum.

But the difference between that set and the 9:30 finale was a measurable, shall we say, increase in liquidity.

Fortified with many Heinekens from the bar, the boys of Flook -- founding flutist Sarah Allen is back in Ireland with her new baby, replaced at this show by the great McGoldrick -- really cut loose in the second set. They punctuated their manic reel and jig medleys not only with the occasional waltz or haunting slow number, but with sidesplitting, extemporaneous stories of life on the road, turning the cavernous interior of the American Legion Hall into a corner pub in Dublin or Limerick.

In all, an hour with Flook -- any hour - shows why this ensemble keeps winning award after award and is one of the brightest lights in Celtic music today. w

Power of the press S

I think everyone -- including Festival organizers themselves -- are pleasantly surprised at just how well-attended all the events in the Savannah Music Festival have been so far. Not that anyone expected a low turnout, but I think there was some anxiety at whether or not the St. Pat’s celebrations would negatively impact ticket sales.

Well, they didn’t. Thursday’s opening concert, Leahy at the Lucas, was very wellattended despite few people knowing who the band is. (And a fine one they are).

Both Friday night concerts of the intriguing Dianne Reeves/Susan Tedeschi double bill at the Lucas hit close to 100 percent sold-out status, with crowds enthusiastically receiving both guests, wildly divergent though they are musically (For more detail see my reviews on page 10).

And the amazing Irish ensemble Flook’s two high-energy sets at the American Legion hall were better attended than most observers expected, considering they took place on St. Patrick’s evening and were at a comparatively little-used venue at the edge of the Historic District.

In next week’s paper we plan to review Bach’s St. Matthew Passion (Thursday night at the Lucas), Shawn Mullins (Thursday night at Orleans Hall), Noche Flamenca (Friday at the Lucas) and Wynton Marsalis (Saturday at the Johnny Mercer Theatre) and more.

ometimes the best way to find out how many people really read your newspaper is when there’s a mistake in it.

And the verdict is in: A whole lotta people read Connect Savannah!

Much of my morning last Friday was occupied with the fallout from some incorrect St. Patrick’s Day parking information we published -- specifically, a statement that onstreet, metered parking was free all day on Friday, March 16.

It wasn’t.

But that’s not what we’d been told in a March 1 news release from Savannah Police, which clearly stated: “Available, on-street, metered parking will be free Friday, Saturday and Sunday March 16, 17, and 18.”

After breathing a sigh of relief when I realized I’d dodged a bullet, I made sure to contact various city entities, such as Jim Gilliamsen of Parking Services and city spokesman Bret Bell, explaining that the faulty information had been in wide release for quite some time and didn’t originate in my office.

Yeah, I know what you’re thinking: Regardless, we still published incorrect information. This is true.

In a perfect world every newspaper would have time to fact-check every single word of every one of the dozens of press releases we receive each week. But that’s not gonna happen, because despite whatever corporate happy-talk somebody else might have to say, it’s not a perfect world and no one -- I mean no one -- fact-checks everything.

Anyway, I’ve learned that these things have a way of working themselves out. Sure enough, there were so many complaints from Connect readers who thought parking was free on Friday but got ticketed anyway that the City of Savannah decided to waive all parking tickets from that day.

Don’t take my word for it -- here’s what the city’s release says: “Call it the Luck O’ The Irish: The City of Savannah will waive all meter-violation tickets issued Friday.”

Just think: If you got a parking ticket Friday, you have me to thank for making it go away.

ike most people, I look at myself in the mirror many times, every day.

First thing in the morning, when the half-mirror above the sink in the bathroom registers the abovethe-shoulders “me,” it’s the raw version, unadulterated, absolute.

Oddly enough this first look is easiest to take. Usually it’s still dark outside and the rheostat lighting is on low or gentle. Between the unintended and often interesting tousled bed-head look (something people pay good money for) and the sleepy - OK, sexy - eyes, only the worst critic could expect too much more.

Most days, what I’m seeing first thing is usually better than what I could hope for.

Hey, I’m alive, right? In the words of poet Sister V, “Good morning, world!”

For the rest of the day the image-check is all smoke-and-(you should excuse the expression) mirrors, best foot forward and all that. You know the drill. Turning your head just so, lowering your chin, wetting your lips, not looking too closely at hips or behind or browning teeth or the spread of your nose (is it getting bigger?) or your ears (are they getting bigger?), at the funny thing your hair does at the crown of your head no matter how you try to comb or cut it.

Not too bad, you think. Definitely within the realm of acceptability. in fact, pretty darn good, considering.

After that you dress, taking a cursory look in the full-length mirror, mostly from the side where you can suck it up, all of it.

Then you do a final brush, checking your teeth for bits of food, trying to find some earrings that match, throwing some product on your hair because try as you do you can’t reproduce that cool bed-head look. It’s too late.

Then you grab a paper or a book and go out for coffee, innocently taking a seat at a counter somewhere, all confident and assured. That’s when it starts to fall apart.

Out of the corner of your eye, you catch a glimpse of someone in the glass behind the server station, someone with a newspaper or a book spread in front of them, wearing the same earrings you are wearing, someone you think you may know.

“Eeek,” you say. “Who’s that?” She looks familiar but somehow older, more ragged, a little frayed, a little tattered. Not the person you saw in the mirror at home.

This can’t be right. Kind of like when you get weighed at a doctor’s office and you want to say to the nurse, “This scale can’t be right.”

Why do we never weigh less at the doctor’s than we do at home?

A similar thing happens when friends send us photographs of ourselves with cute little notes like, “I love this picture of you!” or, “You look great here.”

And you couldn’t have a more divergent opinion.

Several Christmases ago, someone even took one of those pictures that he liked so much, framed it and gave it to me. Why do I need a picture of myself, framed yet, I thought, especially one that doesn’t look like me (or the me I’d like to think I looked like).

None of these issues would be quite so complex if there weren’t ways to ameliorate or augment what we see in the mirror.

Therein lies the rub.

“You could probably get your eyes done under your insurance if you prove that your drooping lid is impeding your eyesight,” someone recently told me, intending only the best of suggestions.

Thanks a lot.

But the notion remains. Through modern chemistry (and surgery), there is something we can do about the way we look, the way we age, because, let’s face it, what we see is not going to be changing for the better.

Our attitude can change but not our looks.

Suze Orman knows this. (She - one foot out of the closet - has had to have had “some work,” no?). Diane Sawyer couldn’t still look that good either without a little nip here, a little tuck there.

A few years ago my fortysomething niece told me she had “some work” because she was tired of people telling her she looked tired all the time.

“But you’re tired,” I told her. “You have three children and you work full-time.”

She didn’t care. She just didn’t want to look as if she had three children and worked all the time.

Not everyone feels this way. “I earned these wrinkles,” the argument starts. “I’m going to keep them.”

andy Termotto has loved horses his entire life. “I’ve been around horses since I was nine or 10 years old, more than 50 years,” he says.

St. Pat’s Edition On Friday an officer saw an intoxicated man fall from the River Street seawall. The man fell 15 feet and hit the Hyatt boat dock before falling into the water. The officer jumped onto the dock and was able to pull the man to safety.

He told the officer he was sitting on the railing and “just fell off.”

EMS treated the man at the scene for minor cuts to the left side of his face. The friends with him said they were going to take him home.

• A hotel manager told police a man had broken out a window in a hotel room early on Sunday. He called police before he went into the room. The officer arrived and when the officer and the manager walked into the hotel room, they found a man sleeping in the bed.

The door was wide open when the officer and victim entered. A woman outside the room and down the hall was asked what happened in the room. She said her friends left her and her boyfriend downtown at the festivities, and her boyfriend got mad and punched the window, breaking it. Then he went to sleep.

Both the man and woman were intoxicated to the point that the boyfriend “accused officers of throwing water on him to wake him up.” The manager called to find out how much the window would cost to be fixed and gave the estimate to both parties. Both suspects agreed to pay to fix the window. The manager was given a case report number, just in case they left for home without paying.

• A man parked his car at Calhoun Square on Saturday, but when he came back four hours later it was gone. At first, the man assumed it had been towed because he parked it in front of a fire hydrant.

But when he called the front desk of the hotel where he was staying, he found out it had not been towed, so he called police.

• A concessionaire on River Street discovered some wall-climbing equipment had been stolen from his entertainment site on East River Street. The man said the equipment was new and valued at more than $6,000. The items were in a black plastic container and secured with zip-ties.

• A man told police someone punched him in the head and stole his wallet and cellphone while he was on Bay Street. The man said he was “very intoxicated” at the time of the attack and couldn’t describe his assailant. He said he wanted a police report so he could have the phone replaced.

• A woman returned to a friend’s East Park Avenue residence Sunday from River Street to change clothes. When she returned to her car, she found “obscenities written on it with purple paint.” In addition to the paint, peanut butter was smeared on the back window.

• Police were called to Candler Hospital in reference to a possible aggravated sexual assault. The victim told police she was possibly raped on River Street.

She said she went into an unknown bar and attempted to use the restroom. While waiting to use the restroom, two men were verbally assaulting her. She said as she entered the restroom, the men “entered behind her, then pushed her against the wall and down on the floor.”

She said one of the men “penetrated her with his fingers.” She said at that point she became very disoriented and lost consciousness several times. The woman said she remembered a man on top of her, but doesn’t know if there was any penetration.

She said the men poured beer on her head and fled the scene.

After the woman left the bar, a friend found her disoriented and took her to the hospital for treatment. She couldn’t describe the two men. She was given a case report number card. w

• On Saturday a man and woman were walking with friends along Bull Street when another man encountered them and began to “exchange unpleasant remarks” with the woman and then pushed her. Her companion pushed the suspect away from the woman, but the suspect pushed his way past the man and struck the woman twice in the face.

After he hit the woman, the suspect began swinging at the man. The man defended himself by pushing the suspect away, but according to police, the suspect was “relentless” and kept swinging.

EMS was called and all three were treated for injuries. No charges were filed against the suspect, because the victims decided not to prosecute.

Brian Ward, 29, was arrested in St. Clairsville, W.Va., in February after a student’s parent saw him acting strange while parked across the street from St. Clairsville High School. The parent reported that Ward appeared maybe to be having a seizure, in that his arms were “thrashing around,” but police found that that was just his reaction to an illegal inhalant, which was not identified.

Novelist (27 books) David Eddings, 75, accidentally destroyed his Carson City, Nev., garage and part of his next-door office in January while he was flushing out the gas tank of his idle sports car. He said later that his intention was to remove the gasoline from the car to reduce the fire risk, but then he saw that some fluid had leaked onto the garage floor. For some reason, Eddings’ curiosity about the leak (water or gasoline?) caused him to light a piece of paper and toss it onto the puddle, just to find out.

“One word comes to mind,” he later told the Nevada Appeal. “Dumb.”

Recurring Themes

News of the Weird has retired the category of household-hoarding stories, but Ann Biglin of West Yarmouth, Mass., has an additional problem: hoarding in her automobile. Police issued a citation in February after her car knocked over a light post, which Biglin explained was due to “several old coffee cups” and “assorted pieces of trash” that might have accidently fallen and hit the accelerator. However, police found the seats filled at least chest-high with trash. w

The Thai government declared the northernmost province of Chiang Rai a disaster zone due to a thick layer of hazardous smoke from massive wildfires raging across the north of the country. Most outdoor activities were being prohibited, and pregnant women, the elderly and children were advised to wear face masks to protect against the hazardous smoke. Air transportation to the region has also been disrupted due to low visibilities. Severe drought from the recent El Niño has left a large swath of the Southeast Asian nation parched with an extremely high fire danger. The uncontrolled blazes have spread from fires ignited by local farmers who were burning off vegetation in preparation for the upcoming rainy season.

Ash from Montserrat’s Soufriere Hills volcano spewed high above the eastern Caribbean, disrupting air traffic in Puerto Rico and prompting delays or cancellations by several airlines. Seismologists on Montserrat said the volcano’s dome of hardened lava has swollen to near-record levels, posing a threat of collapse. Such an event would send clouds of volcanic material cascading into populated areas of the island.

• An attempt to plug an Indonesian “mud volcano” with concrete balls appears to have slowed oozing sludge that has displaced 15,000 people on Java during the past several months. Hot mud began bubbling up last May after exploratory gas drilling appeared to have punctured a cap over the geothermal area. The sludge has since spread over a wide residential area and threatens to block a key rail line.

Earthquakes

Several houses on Indonesia’s North Maluku island of Halmahera were wrecked by a magnitude 5.4 temblor. Two people were injured by falling debris.

• Six schoolchildren were injured when two sharp tremors jolted central Mozambique within two hours.

• Earth movements were also felt in northeastern Ohio and along the CaliforniaNevada border.

Fiji Floods

Six Fijians drowned in flash floods that swamped the western part of the South Pacific island chain. A further 13 people escaped being swept to their deaths by clinging to a treetop. Flash floods have also washed away homes and roads, and caused damage to sugarcane farms.

Australia’s worst drought in a century has driven thirsty feral camels into at least one western desert community, where the animals damaged toilets, taps and air conditioners in a frantic search for water. Glen Edwards of the Desert Knowledge Cooperative Research Center told reporters that a wild camel management plan is urgently needed. He said the approximately 1 million feral camels in the region frequently wreck native species, tear down fences and invade Aboriginal sites. The drought has made the animals’ aggressive behavior far worse than normal. Single-hump camels were introduced into the Australian outback as pack animals during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Edwards said that an uncontrolled population explosion since then means a massive camel cull, or export for slaughter, is needed to protect human development and the environment.

Tropical Cyclones

The second cyclone to strike the same area of northwestern Australia within three days brought heavy rainfall and high winds to the region. Cyclone Jacob moved ashore between Whim Creek and Port Hedland with winds of up to 65 mph. Residents there were still cleaning up from Cyclone George’s rampage, which left three people dead and injured more than 20 others.

• Category 4 Cyclone Indlala slammed into Madagascar’s northeastern coast with winds of up to 145 mph. It was the fourth such storm to strike the Indian Ocean island nation within as many months.

Spiritual Loophole

Malaysian Buddhist monks issued a death sentence for fire ants that have infested their temple for years even though they themselves are prohibited from ending the earthly lives of any living creature. A professor volunteered to eradicate the stinging pests after the monks tried a variety of non-lethal methods to get rid of them.

Temple devotees in the country’s northern Penang state even resorted to using a vacuum cleaner to suck up all the ants and relocate them, according to The Star newspaper.

But the poisonous ants soon returned and have stung temple visitors and some of the monks. The temple’s chief monk told the newspaper that the professor has been given the go-ahead to destroy the huge ant colony.

He added that while monks were forbidden to kill anything, outsiders were free to do so as long as the intention was to protect other human beings. w

I am Iron Man Metal sculptor John Boyd Smith unveils an exhibit in Ireland & a new furniture collection

J

ohn Boyd Smith has a lot on his mind. This week the Savannah-based international metalsmith and iron sculptor launches “Marshlands of Savannah,” a limited edition furniture collection.

Later in the month he’ll travel from Georgia to Ireland as one of only 20 artists invited to participate in “Wild Geese: The Irish in America,” an exhibit opening on March 31 at the National Craft Gallery of Ireland in Castle Yard, Kilkenny.

Smith and his wife, artist Rhonda Fleming, have been busy for months as they take their 25-year custom metalwork business in an exciting new direction.

Yet the candid and talkative metalsmith says he’s less animated than usual since the drowning last month of Shaune Lucas of Guyton and Shaune’s 7-year-old son Shannon. Lucas worked with Smith for twelve years as his apprentice, shop foreman and right hand man.

“I knew him for almost 20 years. He was like my son. He was my friend,” says Smith. “He was a good knife maker and all-around craftsman. I trained him in the blacksmith business.”

An international art exhibit in Ireland is a long way to go for a Georgia Tech-trained mechanical engineer from a farm near Spartanburg, South Carolina. In 1960, Smith and his cousin Ron Gaston went exploring in an old shed behind their grandmother’s house and discovered their great-greatgreat-grandfather’s ironworking tools—anvils and hammers dating back to the 18th century. Patrick Hoy immigrated to South Carolina from Ireland in 1804.

“Typically back then a craftsman would train his oldest son in the trade, but he had six daughters and no sons,” says Smith, so when Hoy died in 1860, his tools were packed and forgotten as his land was passed down through generations of heirs.

Together, the cousins began working in metal like their ancestor. Smith was drawn to blacksmithing, while “my cousin was always making knives. Twenty five years ago we turned our hobbies into our livelihood. It’s a storybook tale.”

Gaston died in late 2006, another reason for Smith’s more somber mood of late.

In 25 years, Smith’s works of art have found their way from Savannah’s historic district to distant destinations--grand hotels in South Beach/Miami and San Juan, Puerto Rico, and exclusive homes in San Jose, California. Wrought iron gates, railings, sculptures and sconces evoke the natural beauty of Savannah’s flowering trees, marsh grasses and graceful wading birds.

Contemporary designs are more in demand for larger scale pieces and in other parts of the United States. The PBS series This Old House, and HGTV’s Modern Masters have featured Smith’s works, as well as Southern Accents, Southern Living, and Interior Design magazines.

Smith’s pieces for the Wild Geese show are a tribute to his grandfather’s legacy and to Smith’s unique southern-meets-Ireland heritage.

“Wild Geese” is a historically based term used to describe the Irish diaspora since the 18th century, particularly young men like Foy who made their way to America and made new lives for themselves. All twenty artists in the show are either descendents of Wild Geese like Smith, or are themselves Irish born artists living and creating in the United States.

Other artists include Paul J. Stankard, a glass artist whose floral works and paperweights are collected by dozens of museums, and Sean O’Meallie, whose whimsical wood sculptures are in public and private collections from Sweden to Colorado.

A workaholic who is in his shop seven days a week, Smith relies on his wife Fleming to cover the globe, seeking the natural and artistic inspiration behind his craft.

“Rhonda is a photographer,” he says. “Her travels feed our imagination.”

At the same time that the Ireland exhibit is launching Smith to a new level of international recognition, he envisions the furniture line as a sort of homecoming, an opportunity to reconnect artistically with Savannah, the city where his work began in the wrought iron gates he crafted for historic downtown gardens.

The husband and wife team meets together with each client to discuss a proposed piece, and Fleming draws the concept sketch. His engineering background is critical in the creation of each functional gate, table, or sculpture, capturing Fleming’s delicate drawings in iron or bronze while taking into account size and weight of foundations, and strength of materials.

In Smith’s Garden City blacksmith shop, iron filings turned to rust cover the floor in fine orange dust.

Massive steel tables hold piles of slab metal, some cut to crude forms, others taken to the next phase after heating to thousands of degrees in one of several forges, then shaped with the hundreds of hammers hanging in heavy racks near two massive anvils.

“This Londonstyle anvil hasn’t changed in 3,000 years,” says Smith.

“It’s the perfect tool.

It can make anything.”

With the “Marshlands of Savannah” furniture collection, a limited edition series of glass-topped wrought iron tables, Smith will be able to address two consequences that have come with his success over the past quarter century. The piece-by-piece individual nature of his craft has kept his work out of the hands of what he calls “upwardly mobile professional people” who are not in a position to pay for a custom piece. Other collectors able to afford Smith’s specialty work who were unwilling to wait many months for delivery will be able to acquire a limited edition table within about six weeks.

Girls play to WIN

Women’s Independent Network Festival March 29-April 1 focuses on emerging artists

I

n a city filled with festivals, it might seem at first glance that holding another festival to mark National Women’s Month wouldn’t be so daring.

But true to form, Carol Greenberg of the local nonprofit Morningstar Arts is thinking outside the box when it comes to the festival she’s organized -- the Women’s Independent Network (WIN) Festival, March 29-April 1.

WIN-Fest is notable in that rather than appealing to the same older, moneyed demographic that many local festivals pursue, it’s expressly designed to appeal to a younger age range.

“I’ve noticed a lot of emerging artists here, but a lot leave Savannah,” Greenberg says. “Many get trained here but they leave because they can’t find jobs. We have some wonderful entrepreneurship projects but young people sometimes don’t know how to tap into these resources.”

Seeing the major obstacle to getting more women, especially young women, further involved in cultural activities as the gap between the art side and the business side, Greenberg chose to specifically focus on doing something about it.

“I think we have cutting edge jobs in art, graphic design and communication, and we want to bridge the gap by networking,” she says. “We’re talking about those with a serious interest in art, from film production to photography. We want to teach people basic business skills.”

While this year’s inaugural WIN-Fest boasts a concert by the Atlanta band Venus 7, cutting-edge performance hosted by the Savannah Actor’s Theatre and indie film screenings, Greenberg says the heart of WIN-Fest is the free workshops.

“For me the most important purpose of WIN-Fest is the workshops. We’re going to show women how to think outside the box, how to find careers in the arts and how to present themselves,” she says.

“Some of the workshops talk about gender marketing, but basically they’re going to tell you that you have to be able to talk to everybody and how best to do that,” Greenberg says.

“We would love art people to stay in Savannah. The more people that are cutting edge here, the more that will contribute to the economic strength of community.”

Six “Expose Yourself ” events -- planned by, for and about women to showcase emerging talent -- are another major component of the four-day festival.

Thursday night, March 29, the Savannah Actor’s Theater (SAT) will host a performance event entitled “Expose Yourself: Acting Out.” The keynote speaker will be Andrew Meyer, associate producer of Fried Green Tomatoes, who will talk about how it takes a man to open a women’s festival.

Then the spotlight will be handed over

to Kye Walker, an assistant film professor at Savannah State University.

March 30-31 is time to support local artists and jewelers at “Expose Yourself: A Fine Arts Affair.” Booths will be overflowing with inspired pieces at the Jewish Educational Alliance (JEA) from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. (and Sunday from 10 to 2). One hundred percent of the profits will go to the artists themselves.

Also at the JEA on Friday, March 30, Memorial Health representatives will help power up women’s bodies at lunch time (121) through a discussion dealing with women’s health, and even careers for artists at hospitals.

Workshops handling such topics as book writing, computer business, and even dance will be available on both Friday at the JEA and Saturday at various locales.

Professionals in their field will be teaching these classes, and even those who are experienced can join in by taking the master classes for their particular area of expertise.

Another “Expose Yourself ” happens at SAT at 7:15 p.m. Friday. Entitled “Women’s Short Shorts,” this mini-film fest boasts local filmmakers with big ideas. Preceding the films, Aleigh Acerni, local editor of Skirt! and Kelly Love Johnson, regional editor of Skirt! will speak about uncovering women’s dream jobs.

If you like to express yourself in theater or film, check out “Expose Yourself: Upside-down” Saturday at the SAT from 1-5 p.m. It’s an open call for cast and crew for a local independent film production entitled Pineapple Upsidedown Cake.

Saturday night at the SAT, “Expose Yourself: Live at the Mike” will include the Savannah Derby Devils and various performers. The Derby Devils will be “live and talking” complete with clips of their bouts. (You can watch the Derby Girls in action at Lake Mayer on Sunday, April 1, from 2:15-3:30 p.m.)

Saturday evening, March 31, brings a concert by the difficult-to-define Venus 7 of Atlanta, who will perform a fusion of jazz, hip hop, and soul. The band’s name symbolizes female love and completion, making them perfect for the inclusive feeling of the festival.

The band comprises Ingrid Sibley and Dorothy Bell (the two classically trained front women), Justin Ellington on drums, Tammy Stanko on bass, and Corey Stayton on guitar.

Bell tells how the band got involved in WIN-Fest.

“Oh it was actually a couple friends of ours who attend SCAD,” she says. “They mentioned the festival and that it was going to cater towards inspiring women artists.”

Venus 7’s second CD, Primer, is due out in April. “It’s pretty much our diaries in music,” admits Bell.

“Music is a cure-all. Ingrid and I have that in common. When you’re in a bad mood you can just pick up your guitar. It’s how we get through life. it’s the easiest voice we have.”

Opening for Venus 7 is Savannah local Ina Williams, a talented singer who blends r&b, jazz, and indie influences.

The entire free concert begins at 7:15 p.m. Saturday, March 31 at Savannah Actor’s Theatre’s base in The Ark Theatre on Louisville Rd. The Women’s Independent Network itself is a two-year initiative for aspiring female artists and performers. It began in January with the first-ever workshop called

Claire Oosterhoudt is a student who took the class.

“I really liked being able to see the photographic work of other aspiring photojournalists and their perceptions of women in the community,” she said. “It gave me a better understanding of why photography has such an important role in telling a story.”

The students who participated in WINPhoto will have their work exhibited at the Telfair on Sunday from 3:30-5 p.m., the grand finale of the festival. This multigenerational exhibit connects the student with the experts and gives the student a chance to have their work in a recognized museum. w The first-ever WIN-Fest happens all around town from March 29-April 1.

Works by Garcia, Temple and Hartman @Grand Bohemian Gallery through March 30

ulio Garcia’s New Orleans series in this exhibition was previously shown as “The Trouble With Building Here” at Atwell’s Art & Frame, and I reviewed it at length in this paper at the time. His etched and scratched abstractions that employ printmaking techniques reference the conflict between city planning and natural landscape.

I have often seen Mary Hartman’s work in reproduction but never got to see an exhibition until now. On one occasion I was sure I recognized her work on an exhibition card, and I noted that she had forgotten to include her name. This lack of self-advertising coupled with an egoless immersion in the work itself made me even more determined to see her next show.

She is here showing works entitled, “Horse,” each of which deals with a drawing of one horse. She includes both small drawings that appear to be directly observed from life, and eight larger works that she has called the “Small Farmer’s Journal” series, which I think may have received their initial impetus from photographs seen in the above journal for independent-minded farmers.

As I see it, these drawings are all worked on in an effort to understand and bring meaning to the form. In the larger ones, the imagery has been so internalized that the horse emerges in a very few marks, rather like the Chinese painter who employs only a few brush strokes to evoke the spirit of the bamboo.

I think my favorite is “Back-up Reinforcements”, which shows a line of identical, extremely tall figures ending in tiny heads with a little flap beneath the chin which could be read as the vestigial remains of the arm and hand. And these columnar figures sport wheels for feet, one large and one small like in a penny-farthing cycle, giving them a curiously festive air.

This strikes me as a clever depiction of the future human who, through atrophy, is beginning to morph into a mechanical object whose applications will be as obscure as those we have already seen.

But some things may remain all too familiar to us. While Hartman’s drawings emerge at the time of the making of the marks on paper or canvas, W. Gerome Temple has designed and planned each attribute of each drawing beforehand. Also, while Hartman uses the actual visual world of nature as subject, Temple is closer to the Joycean or Borgesian world of literary ideas, punning and invention. So these artists may appear to be polar opposites in approach, but the uncalculated necessity and seriousness of intent they both have means the works are good companions.

Temple’s elegant drawings abound in wit and use hilarious neologisms to draw us into a surreal world of “fictional botanicals”, “imaginary entomologies” and small “architectural fantasy constructions” of complex machinery which seems, however, to require the human for it to work.

For instance, in “Phonomagnadynometer”, one of his small stylized, stick-like figures in uniform mans an enormous and bizarre contraption reminiscent to me of parts of bagpipes fitted together, engaged in some fanciful function, maybe musical, maybe military, maybe both.

To Blu-ray or Scott not to Blu-ray I

finally picked a side in the ongoing highdefinition format war. For those of you who don’t know (read: aren’t total nerds), there are currently two formats competing to be the successor to the DVD: Blu-ray and HD DVD. While your typical DVD holds 4GB of information and displays data at 480 pixels, these formats hold around ten times more (30GB for HD DVD and 50GB for Blu-ray) and display 1080 pixels. And yes, this makes a huge difference.

Speaking as a proud HDTV enthusiast, it’s a shame to watch my favorite shows in quality that’s closer to perfection than I ever imagined possible and then pop in a DVD of one of my favorite movies only to have it look muddy and blurry by comparison.

Unfortunately the formats are incompatible with each other, so as noted film preservation house Criterion said in a widely circulated press release, consumers are being forced “to decide between a Casablanca player or one that plays Lawrence of Arabia.”

I’ve wanted to upgrade to one of the formats since they came on the market last year, but like everyone else I don’t want to shell out hundreds of dollars only to end up with the 21st century version of Betamax. So after watching the war play out for a while, I chose to go with Blu-ray, and I’d recommend the same to anyone else.

First of all, it’s simply a superior format.

Again, the HD DVD holds 30GB and Bluray holds almost twice as much at 50GB. While a direct comparison between most of the movies released in both formats is a wash at the moment, Blu-ray will undoubtedly look and sound better in the future.

Secondly, Blu-ray is supported exclusively by Sony (who owns the format), Disney, Fox and Lionsgate while HD DVD is only supported by Universal.

Honestly, I can’t believe the HD DVD people even went forward with their format when Disney decided to go with Blu-ray exclusively. At least 75 percent of the home video business is kid-driven, and if parents can’t play a Disney movie in a $500 piece of equipment they’re not going to buy it.

Lastly, the Playstation 3 is a Blu-ray player. I worked in video stores throughout my high school and college years when DVDs first came on the market, and I remember how long it took for them to take off.

That all changed when the Playstation 2 came out. Within a year, we got rid of almost all of our VHS tapes and replaced them with DVDs. The Playstation 2 took a home theater geek format and brought it to the mainstream.

Granted, the Playstation 3 costs twice as much as its predecessor and really only works to its full potential with HDTV (which only about 10 percent of American

households have currently, though that number will rise exponentially over the next few years). But even with a massive slide of market dominance, the PS3 represents an insurmountable hurdle for its competition.

It’s also pretty easy to see that Blu-ray is here to stay by reading the silly and inconsequential arguments of those against it. These complaints rarely go beyond “Sony is evil!” or “P$3 sucks!”

And while I am rarely one to discourage criticism of transnational corporations or media consolidation, it seems more than a little stupid to talk about Sony’s greed when HD DVD is owned part and parcel by a tiny little mom & pop operation called Microsoft. Regardless of the means with which Blu-ray is winning, it’s outselling its competition by a 2:1 margin, and that looks to increase as time goes on.

What’s most disappointing about the format war though, besides the fact that a lot of people are going to end up with the equivalent of a DIVX player, is that it obscures perhaps the most exciting technological innovations in cinema since widescreen was introduced to compete with that newfangled invention called the television.

There have been exactly two good movies released in 2007 so far: 300 and Zodiac.

Both are visual masterpieces and both were shot in high definition digital video.

Before Blu-ray and HD DVD, that digital information would be transferred to film for editing and the theatrical release and then converted back into a digital format and downconverted so that it would fit on a single 4GB DVD, losing picture quality at every step.

Now a movie shot digitally can be edited digitally, projected digitally in a theater and be transferred with little or no compression to a disc for you to watch in the comfort of your own home. The efficiency, price and quality of digital media has the potential to revolutionize the motion picture industry, giving producers and consumers better product for lower prices.

One of the most difficult groups in the entire Southeast to pigeonhole, this wonderfully entertaining and downright captivating Asheville trio’s name just about says it all. Echoes of acoustic ragtime, Old-Time C & W, creaky carnival themes, early rock and roll (think Ricky Nelson), and R & B

Wilmington, N.C.’s Thunderlip has honed the ol’ Skynyrd-meets-Sabbath bit far better than most. Nashville’s Christine plays slightly more by-the-numbers twangy stoner melodrama. And, while up-and-coming locals I Am Sound are still honing their disparate influences (grunge’s glory days, the shoegaze movement, spacey psychmetal) into a cohesive package, they’re one of the more intriguing Savannah rock acts of late. It’s a bent, raunchy, Fat Possum-esque stomp through deconstructed Led Zep attitude and primitive Chickasaw Mudpuppies hambone. Fans of Jennyanykind’s later stuff should dig it. The move to fund a public skateboarding park on Tybee for area youth continues with this show. Members of locally-based touring metal and punk acts Baroness and Blacktusk will play a set of tunes by Glenn Danzig’s famed band The Misfits — in addition to a rare appearance by Savannah’s own Black Flag tribute act The 10 1/2 (featuring an all-star cast of local players). Wed., March 28, 11 pm, The Jinx.

This retro roots-rock and swing quintet from Seattle plays everything from Bakersfield-style C & W to TexMex and rockabilly straight from the Sun. Vocalist Dee’s lived and worked everywhere from South America to Alaska, and that wandering spirit informs the band’s attitude toward musical inspiration. They’ve won several awards in the Northeast both before and after signing to respected twang label Dionysus. Fans of Buck Owens, Billy Riley, Los Lobos or The Knitters may appreciate this group. To give you some idea of how special this blues artist is at what he does, John Hammond —himself a traditional Delta blues icon— once said he’d “drive a thousand miles to see Paul Geremia perform.” Geremia’s a scholar of the genre, and one of the finest finger pickers in the country. His sets include originals as well as timeless tunes from titans such as Robert Johnson and Blind Willie McTell, played on 6 and 12-string guitars, mouth harp and piano. That it doesn’t come close to breathing the rarefied air of the three aforementioned classics isn’t necessarily meant as a putdown, but it’s clear that David Fincher’s new movie doesn’t provide the same level of either visceral thrills or sublime plotting as its predecessors.

Working from a book by Robert Graysmith, the film casts Jake Gyllenhaal as Graysmith, a San Francisco Chronicle cartoonist who becomes obsessed with uncovering the truth behind the series of grisly slayings plaguing the Bay Area. Yet Graysmith isn’t alone in his fanatical devotion to the case: The mystery also haunts the dreams of Chronicle reporter Paul Avery (Robert Downey Jr.) and detective Dave Toschi (Mark Ruffalo), and as the years march on, the trio’s pursuit of justice (or is it merely ego gratification?) begins to take its toll on health, marriage and career.

Four Cincinnati bunglers (John Travolta, Tim Allen, Martin Lawrence and William H. Macy), each suffering though some pathetic form of midlife crisis, decide to embark on a road trip to the West Coast. They mount their motorcycles with the intent of rediscovering life’s little pleasures, but it’s not long before these queasy riders are having to cope with menacing bikers, “bomb”-dropping birds and a homosexual highway patrolman (John C. McGinley).

Is it possible that before making the bigscreen version of Ghost Rider, writer-director Mark Steven Johnson had never even read a Ghost Rider comic book? Yes, I know as well as anyone that faithfulness to the source material is a low priority when it comes to Hollywood, whether adapting Stan Lee or Lee Child. But Johnson, whose version of Daredevil wasn’t quite as bad as the press made out, here botches what would have seemed to be a fairly manageable assignment. Nicolas Cage, whose best film in recent years has been the hilarious Wicker Man reedit currently gracing YouTube, falls back on the eye-popping, head-rolling overacting that has turned him into this decade’s Rod Steiger.

Amazing Grace 

Basically Amistad with only half the serving of self-importance, Amazing Grace examines the efforts of William Wilberforce, a member of British Parliament who fought to end his country’s involvement in the slave trade during the late-18th and early-19th centuries. Ioan Gruffudd (the officer who rescues Rose in Titanic), plays Wilberforce, who spent over two decades of his life battling colleagues who saw nothing wrong in keeping the practice of slavery alive. But armed

with his deeply held religious convictions and a basic sense of decency, he persevered against all obstacles, including a reputation as a traitor to his country during the war with France (“You’re either with us or with the French terrorists!” has a familiar ring...) and his own failing health. Perhaps more Masterpiece Theatre than motion picture — director Michael Apted (Nell) frequently opts for static shots more suitable for the small screen — Amazing Grace nevertheless tells a story that’s compelling enough to compensate for the occasional stuffiness.

Black Snake Moan



After earning positive notices for his breakthrough feature, 2005’s Hustle & Flow, writer-director Craig Brewer returns with another look at Southern discomfort deepfried in a greasy pool of sex and song. Set in a swampy Tennessee burg, this stars Samuel L. Jackson as Lazarus, a former blues musician who rescues town tart Rae (Christina Ricci) after he discovers her in the ditch next to his house. Working through his own domestic crisis Lazarus decides to redeem himself by simultaneously saving this woman, chaining her to his radiator and attempting to purge her of her sexual demons.

What Lazarus doesn’t know is that his own demons will be better tamed by the love of a good woman — in this case, the helpful pharmacist (S. Epatha Merkerson) who works in the nearby town — and that Rae’s soldier-boy steady (Justin Timberlake) has just returned after an aborted Iraqi tour of duty and is looking for his sweetheart.

Bridge to Terabithia



Like the film versions of A Little Princess and The Neverending Story, Bridge to Terabithia wasn’t made for crusty-snot-nosed kids; instead, it’s for bright, inquisitive children (and attendant adults) who subscribe to the theory that imagination is one of the most wonderful tools available. Based on Katherine Paterson’s award-winning book, this explores the relationship between two outcast middle-schoolers (Josh Hutcherson and AnnaSophia Robb, both highly appealing) and the adventures they share as they create a magical kingdom in the woods that rest behind their respective houses. If the effects involved in the creation of their imaginary world seem on the thrifty side, that’s OK, since the heart of the story rests in the manner in which children are able to cope with loneliness, ostracism and even death.
