When ‘save the whales’ isn’t a joke The Georgia coast is a vital link in the survival of the North Atlantic Right Whale as a species.

But the high rate of lethal ship strikes poses dire consequences for their recovery

On December 30, aerial observers discovered a dead two-year old male Right Whale off the coast of Brunswick, floating in the water, bloody gashes strewn across his body -- the telltale signs of a propeller hit.

Just last week, another Right Whale became caught in fishing lines off Georgia’s Cumberland Island. Rescue efforts were ongoing as of this writing.

Right Whales are the rarest of all large whale species and among the rarest of all marine mammals. There are only about 300 North Atlantic Right Whales in existence, so each premature death further damns their species.

The Georgia coast plays an integral part in the survival of the species, because pregnant females migrate to our warm waters every winter to calve and nurse their babies.

Last year, researchers knew of six North Atlantic Right Whale deaths, five of which were due to ship strikes or fishing nets.

Right whales have a very low reproductive rate, giving birth only about every five years, which cannot sustain this human-induced mortality rate.

If this rate of death continues, the Right Whale will die out, warns Cathy Sakas, education coordinator/co-manager of Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary, a federallyprotected undersea nature reserve 17 miles off Sapelo Island.

Why do Right Whales come to the Georgia coast to calve and nurse their young?

Existing conservation efforts rely on voluntary action by the shipping and fishing industry. Unfortunately, action (or inaction) by these industries is helping to kill off the Right Whale.

In March 2006, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), proposed a speed limit of 10 knots (about 12 miles per hour) for big ships along the east coast. It isn’t a universal speed limit for big ships, just a speed limit in the known feeding or calving grounds of Right Whales, when the whales are likely to be there. Slower speeds give whales (who move 3-5 knots per hour) more time to react, and if there is a ship strike, less chance of mortal injury.

The regulations are currently under review, a process that moves about as fast as a Right Whale.

They’re extremely slow moving -- 3-5 knots -- for great whales.

When they sleep, in a process dubbed “logging,” part of their brain shuts down and the other half is sluggish… which may cause them to react slowly, if at all, to outside stimuli.

Unlike many other whales, when researchers broadcast ship sounds at Right Whales, they don’t appear to react. Researchers aren’t sure why Right Whales commonly don’t seem to react to ship sounds.

Right Whales move in a north/south migratory path and ships move east/west in and out of ports— it’s like a convergence… typically whales are broad sided.

Cathy Sakas: Right Whales are born without blubber, so every winter, pregnant females travel down from their feeding grounds in Nova Scotia and Cape Cod with a posse of young whales (who often stay with their mother even after weaning) and deliver their babies in the warm waters of the Georgia and North Florida coast. They remain until the calves gain enough blubber to handle the frigid waters in Cape Cod and Nova Scotia. Additionally, our coastal waters are relatively shallow, which gives the whales protection against sharks.

Why are there so few Right Whales?

Cathy Sakas: In the 1800s, whalers zeroed in on them as the “right” whale to kill for oil and bones, because Right Whales swim close to the surface, and float when they are dead. Before whaling, researchers estimate that there were 50,000 whales swimming up and down the North Atlantic coast. By the 1930s, there were only about 100 North Atlantic Right Whales in existence. The Right Whale became the first whale species to be given international protection.

Speed limits for big ships?

past year, there have been scheduled times for public comment, and the shipping and fishing industry has been given a chance to represent their opinions. Now, a series of different government agencies must review the proposed regulations.

This means meetings, committees to be formed, political pressure from different people… and there is no clear timeline to the process.

The lack of urgency is unacceptable to Amy Knowlton, senior Right Whale researcher at the New England Aquarium.

“The process has been impeded because of internal conflict between federal agencies about whether and how to implement such rules, and strong opposition from affected industries who are resisting the need to change business as usual to protect this beleaguered species,” she says.

Canada has already enacted regulations similar to the regulations under review in the U.S., and have rerouted shipping lanes in the Bay of Fundy, the principal late summer feeding ground for the Right Whale.

Public comments, posted on the NOAA website, give a taste of industry concerns regarding the proposed regulations.

John Atchison, president of the St. John’s Bar Pilot Association, which handles all of the large ship traffic into and out of the Port of Jacksonville, explained that in inclement weather pilots have to maintain a certain speed. The proposed speed limits, he says, would all but ground incoming traffic during periods of bad weather.

“Should these rules pass our ability to provide all-weather, 24-hour service will be severely diminished and commerce in Jacksonville will be drastically affected whenever adverse weather occurs,” Atchison says.

Mike Gretchell, representing Crowley liner services, was concerned that the research stating that whales were dying from ship strikes was biased, and said, “The economic impact of such seems inappropriate for a species that sadly might see extinction due to causes other than

ship strikes.”

At the end of the day, the regulations may be tabled. Teri Frady of NOAA says, “We don’t know what regulations, if any, we will implement.”

Whale expert Hal Caswell, a population biologist at Woods Hole, says “Saving just two Right Whales per year could turn the population around.”

Speaking of global warming -- and disagreement -- one of the most amazing events to happen in Savannah, basically ever, takes place in various venues Feb. 6-10.

Headlined by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s appearance Feb. 10 at the Trustees Theatre, the “Shaping a Sustainable Future” conference is part of Savannah Country Day’s ongoing -- and quite visionary, for this area -- Creative Minds series.

Connect will be doing much more reporting on this event in next week’s issue leading up to the conference, but a few highlights of the event include: • The aforementioned panel discussion including RFK Jr. on Saturday, Feb. 10; • A free screening of the documentary Kilowatt Ours at Abercorn Commons at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, sponsored by the local firm Melaver Inc., a national leader in green building; • And a free screening of Al Gore’s global warming documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9 at Savannah Country Day. To explore the “controversy” engendered

by Gore’s film, there will be a panel discussion including Peter Webster of Georgia Tech and Roger Pielke Jr. of the University of Colorado, climatologists with opposing views on global warming.

Personally, it seems to me that if you have mounds of data identifying a potential problem that has even a small chance of causing the inundation of most of the world’s major cities, then it would be prudent to address the problem now and work out the “controversy” later, wouldn’t it?

In any case, Savannah Country Day, Melaver and everyone else associated with this event is to be commended for organizing it and making it available.

For more info go to www.savcds.org/ symposium/symposium1.html One of the most unique -- and strangely underreported -- aspects of life on the Georgia coast is the annual visitation by one of nature’s most awesome creations, the North American Right Whale.

The massive but gentle mammals -- only a few hundred still remain -- grace us with their presence each winter, as mothers travel south to have their babies in the warm waters off our coast. The rest of the year they spend off New England, in cooler waters teeming with their preferred menu items.

Some years back during a vacation to Maine and Canada, my wife and I saw a whale (no idea which species, but it was huge) during a ferry trip. We had heard that passengers often see whales breaking the surface, so like benign versions of the whalers of centuries past -- armed with a video camera instead of a harpoon -- we kept an eager watch topside.

Sure enough, shortly into the journey and about a mile or so away from the ferry we saw the distinctive shallow V shape of a whale’s tail as it repeatedly broke the surface. It put on quite a show, lasting several minutes -- a performance we’ll remember forever.

Partially inspired by the ship-caused death last December of a Right Whale off Brunswick, Ga., this week local freelance journalist Sabrina Manganella Simmons explores the manmade threats in our Lead Story.

Not long ago I got a somewhat ominous e-mail from the Arbor Day Foundation explaining that due to global warming the official planting zone for the Savannah area has been changed from Zone 8 to Zone 9, previously a zone for central Florida and the Gulf Coast.

I’ve always been intrigued by James Lovelock’s “Gaia” theory, which posits that the earth functions largely as an organism unto itself, with self-healing powers similar to those of a living being. This holistic, selfsustaining concept is in some ways intrinsic to the Gardening Like the Forest Workshop.

How about this for a theory: Could global warming just be earth’s attempt to heal itself from mankind’s destruction of the rain forest, home to the vast majority of the planet’s species of plants and animals?

What better way to offset the loss of the rain forest than by expanding the areas where rain forests can grow?

I concede that many readers will disagree.

John Edwards, like John Kennedy did,

believes that government is both necessary and capable of making a positive impact on the lives of average Americans. His views are socially progressive and he’s not afraid to say so.

Unlike President Bush, Edwards knows that ending global poverty is more than a moral obligation on the part of the United States—rather poverty directly impacts our own national security. This goal is not only achievable but absolutely necessary.

Edwards has come out strongly in favor of completely overhauling, with the help of government, our nations dependence on crude oil. He is one of the few who actually get it.

Edwards is in favor of, and is currently working on finalizing a plan, that will provide universal health care to the relief of 45 million Americans who are either uninsured or woefully under-insured. How is it that the richest nation on earth, a nation that can somehow afford to spend nearly two billion dollars per month on an illegitimate war, fail to provide its people with adequate preventative and immediate medical care?

Edwards does not believe in blindly throwing money at social problems. He promotes financially assisting those in need, but he expects those who are able to work on getting themselves prepared to be productive citizens. We can accomplish this and we can achieve it in a responsible way, but we can’t simply blow off the poorest people in America–it really does amount to robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Unlike nearly every Congressman who voted in favor of granting Bush the authority to wage war in Iraq, Edwards is strong enough to admit that he made a mistake by casting a favorable vote that allowed Bush unfettered authority to invade Iraq. Edwards made it clear that he was wrong to vote for this and that he accepts responsibility for that mistake.

I can respect a person who does what he thinks is right but, more importantly, who knows when to admit that he is wrong.

That’s true leadership.

Edwards wants to immediately start to draw down our military forces in Iraq by 40,000. He wants us out of Iraq, and that’s good enough for me.

Finally, from a personal experience that happened just after the infamous 2000 presidential election. I remember being incensed about reports that military absentee votes were being excluded because of the most ridiculous reasoning.

I fired off letters of protest to every member of Congress in my home state, then North Carolina. John Edwards was the only one who took the time to respond to my concerns agreeing that every legitimate vote needed to be counted, especially members of the armed forces stationed overseas.

He did this knowing that most military votes would not favor the Democratic candidate Al Gore. He earned my respect for that.

Ms. Fishman, It is obvious that you are unhappy with the current administration. You degrade our democratically elected officals with every new column. You spoke of a 2006 election mandate -- do you realize that the president wasn’t up for re-election?

NPR, The Daily Show and Al Gore’s theory don’t equal enlightenment. I’m proud of your liberalism, it fits you well. To paraphrase Abraham Lincoln, only one side can be right, but they can both certainly be wrong.

History will judge the actions of President Bush, just as history has shown us it was Reagan’s election that freed the Iranian hostages in 1980, not Jimmy Carter’s diplomacy.

It is possible that the administration is completely wrong, but that by no means makes you right.

room can be deathly -- well, maybe that’s not the right word to use -- quiet Yet she persisted.

It is not easy, this end-of-life stuff. Thank goodness for the kindness of strangers who work in nursing homes. It saddens me on many counts how little money they make, and I wonder once again how minimum wage issues can get so tangled up in politics.

Looking for relief, I was happy to toddle over to my old high school, Royal Oak Dondero, which was hosting a swim meet. I was hoping to find my nephew, whose three young children were competing.

But this is the suburbs, and kids in the suburbs -- the other end of our two-tiered society (earth to Jack Kingston: these parents are most likely not working minimum wage jobs) -- are busy and active.

At this swim meet 750 kids were competing. Add one or two parents per kid and maybe an aunt or two and you have a ton of people in one sweaty space. How would I ever meet up with my people?

But kismet was working. One of the first kids to pass me was my nephew’s 11-yearold daughter, hard to recognize with her new nearly-teen body and hair piled under a swim cap but tattooed with the same lines of black type on the back of her hand as all the other swimmers.

“Oh this?” she said. “It’s all the events I’m swimming in.”

I guess so. The family had been there since 7 a.m. and were scheduled to return the next day. Even her six-year-old sister was swimming -- in the 25 butterfly.

Nice to be there. The other end of the spectrum. A perfect contrast to the old people at the other end of their lives.

Great to see healthy kids who could compete but not throw a hissy-fit if they didn’t win (there’s no time; participants in the next heat are already standing on the blocks, listening for the start gun). Parents who could settle in with a book or crossword puzzle for the day. A nice mix of races and sexes, though certainly not of social classes.

Still, I couldn’t help but think of all the kids who would never be there, who would never get that kind of personal attention, that kind of opportunity, whose parents use credit cards to pay medical expenses, not coaches.

Wouldn’t it be amazing to hear a little more from our politicians and from our fellow voters about the old people, the marginalized people, the poor people, instead of who smoked what and when, instead of a person’s political party?

I knew the day would be kind of weird when I caught the tail end of a conversation between two people who work behind the lobby desk of my mother’s retirement home.

The two words I heard for sure were “cocaine” and “addiction” -- followed by some abomination of Barack Obama’s name.

“It was in his book,” said Stan. “The part about cocaine.”

That’s when I walked up.

“Have you read his book?” I asked, emphasis on read.

“No, but I hear it’s in it,” Stan answered.

I can’t wait to hear what they have to say about Hillary, who is so moderate, so middle-of-the-road, so humorless, so intelligent, so cautious, so circumspect, so safe as to be so-boring and probably oh-so-good for this country and the world stage.

It doesn’t hurt that 9 million more women are registered to vote than men. Contemplating a Hillary win is as delicious as watching the hard working Detroit Tigers eliminate the cocky New York Yankees.

(I love to see who hates Hillary. It’s usually the holier-than-thou, chauvinist philanderer in the group; have you noticed? Even Andrew Sullivan, who writes a great blog, by the way, begrudgingly admits having reversed his anti-Hillary stance).

But I did not get into Hillary with Stan.

He’s a good man. He does his job. He grows kale and garlic. He’s patient with the residents (if not management, which is a good thing).

He listens -- as did I -- when some woman sidled up to the desk, interrupting his harangue on Obama to show us a piece of her pocket knife that she claims someone who works here broke off after breaking into her apartment and then slipped into her frozen soup. Later on, when she was relating more infractions, more intrusions, I asked where she lived before moving here.

She named the place. So why did you leave? I persisted. Because her life was in danger, she said. Well then, watch your back and sit facing the door, I thought.

This was a particularly hard weekend for the old people. Two residents died. Two more single roses (with their names) in the lobby. Two new empty seats in the dining room. All certain to have a ripple effect on the living, I am sure.

All through dinner, Faye, a woman with Lou Gehrig’s disease who has lost her speech but none of her wits and who sits at my mother’s table, insisted I tell my mother about both deaths. Since my mother can’t hear diddly-squat, that required a very loud voice I was reluctant to use, especially since except for the Bears game on television, the

Right off the bat Gnats unveil new scoreboard, new affiliation Not five months since Savannah voted to pass SPLOST -- and the allocation of $5 million toward the renovation of Historic Grayson Stadium -the Savannah Sand Gnats have created quite a buzz.

Owner John Simmons, General Manager Brad Dodson and Assistant GM Matt Berry were among the Gnats’ entourage present at the January 16 unveiling of the new 45X65-foot video scoreboard, measuring nearly 300 square feet.

The new scoreboard will allow Grayson Stadium to boast major league amenities such as instant replays and the crowd-pleasing “which hat is the ball under” game. Despite the modernity of the video board, the scoreboard in left field will be manual and will record balls, strikes, and the line score.

Additional renovations are expected by the April 5 season opener, including the demolition of the condemned left field bleachers, playing field lights to meet MLB standards, new concourse turf, an improved professional playing surface, and a new sound system. The Gnats are also pledging more concerts and community events at the stadium, throughout the season and beyond, enabled by the enhanced multimedia.

The 45 x 63 foot video board will replace the current scoreboard, which was installed for the 1984 season

Simmons has even promised shorter lines at concession stands for whoever may be buying the peanuts and cracker jacks.

A shooting in a midtown Savannah entertainment corridor near the corner of 41st and Bull streets, has left one man dead, another in the hospital, and a third gunman in jail.

Conrad George, 33, died at the scene of the shooting, while paramedics had to rush 26-year-old Cumberland Bush to Memorial Health University Medical Center, where he is listed in critical condition. Police arrested Kenneth Frank Smith, 26 at the scene and charged him with aggravated assault...

Savannah-Chatham Police arrived on the scene within minutes of the report of gunfire. Officer Glenn Castro of Central Precinct was less than a block away when the gunfire erupted and the call went out. Castro saw Smith firing a gun in to the direction

Re: Parish of St. Paul the Apostle begins celebration of their Centennial Year

On Thursday, January 25th, at 6:00 p.m. the parish of St. Paul the Apostle will launch a year-long Centennial celebration with a mass commemorating the laying of the original cornerstone. The original celebration launched the building of Savannah’s first free-pew Episcopal church, and then as now, occur on the feast day of the Conversion of St. Paul.

The Very Reverend Samuel Candler, Dean of St. Phillips Cathedral in Atlanta, will preach, and a reception will follow.

“This is certainly one for the history books,” exclaimed Secretary of State Karen Handel, announcing today that an alert employee at the Georgia Archives has identified the earliest known official copy of the Declaration of Independence recorded in the State of Georgia. Greg Jarrell was looking for information to help a patron locate her Revolutionary War ancestor when he noticed a unique index entry: Declaration of the Independence of the United States. “I tracked down the original book and turned to the page and found that it was the Declaration as officially recorded by the state in 1777,” said Mr. Jarrell.

According to archives director David Carmicheal, the recorded copy is especially significant because the state’s original copy of the Declaration was lost long ago.

“When Georgia officials received their copy of the Declaration from Congress, they immediately recorded it in their books as the official record of the event. After that, they would have considered the original to be less important.”

According to Carmicheal, the document was overlooked because it was in a book that was rebound around sixty years ago. “The people who rebound the book put the wrong title on the cover. No one thought to look in this particular volume for such a document.”

Excited about the discovery of this historic document, Secretary Handel stated, “The state archives holds over 250 million documents, so it’s not surprising that we make exciting discoveries from time to time, but this one is particularly significant. where George and Bush had exchanged gunfire shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday outside of one of the nightclubs. The exchange stemmed from an argument between the two victims, and escalated with Smith’s involvement.

Castro arrested Smith, who is acquainted with Bush before he could flee from the scene, and recovered two of the guns in the midst of an emotionally charged crowd. The crowd turned unruly, surrounding the officers and the gunshot victims, preventing treatment and access by paramedics. Other officers from Downtown and Southside precincts had to be called for crowd control. In the meantime, Castro discharged one of the guns to disperse the crowd so that paramedics could gain access to the victims. No one else was injured. The officers actions are being reviewed by Internal Affairs.

‘Princess’ in distress Police were called to Oakland Court on the report of a man with a gun and possible hostages.

The woman who made the report was a woman who identified herself as “Princess.” She said her sister’s boyfriend was holding her hostage with a gun. Princess said she ran out of the house to a pay phone and would meet officers in front of the house. Five officers arrived on the scene and surrounded the location.

One knocked several times in an attempt to make contact with a resident at the location. There was no noise coming from inside and no one answered the door. After a few more attempts, a man finally stepped outside. He was wearing only a pair of shorts and appeared to have just woken up. The man agreed to allow the officers to check his residence. There was no evidence of any crime.

• A woman reported that she had been beaten by her boyfriend after an argument.

Police were called to an East 54th Street residence where they were met by the victim. She said she had started having problems with her boyfriend the previous night.

She said her boyfriend was still angry when he got up the next morning and resumed the fight. A friend who was at the residence stopped that argument, she said.

However, the boyfriend was still angry and later threw the woman down in the bathtub and started kicking her. An officer saw marks on her face, the right side of her arm and under her chin.

EMS responded to the scene and checked the woman out. She said a friend would take her to the emergency room to check a possible jaw fracture.

• Police were called to East 50th Street on a report of an armed robbery of a purse and vehicle. The victim told police that as she was walking away from her car, she noticed a man walking east on the north sidewalk She said she was walking up the driveway when she heard footsteps of someone running up to her in the driveway.

She said the man had pulled his T-shirt over his nose and mouth to hide his face.

She said that he demanded her purse and then her car keys. The victim said the man began pointing a semi-automatic hand gun at her. She said she gave the suspect her purse and keys and he fled.

• An officer responded to the report of a late model car being stripped behind an abandoned mobile home on Hill Road.

Upon arrival, the officer went behind the mobile home and discovered a car that was missing the hood, engine, transmission, Ttop and various other parts, including the

front suspension and tires. A check of the vehicle’s tag revealed the car was owned by a Savannah man.

Dispatch was unable to contact the owner, and the car had not been reported as stolen. The department’s auto theft unit was informed about the case.

• A 16-year-old girl jumped out of her mother’s car and attempted to run away after an argument. The girl’s mother told police that she was taking her daughter to school.

When she tried to talk to the girl about her behavior and the fact that she had skipped several days of school, the girl jumped out of the car at Paulsen and 33rd streets and walked to the area of 34th Street and Waters Avenue.

The mother said her daughter apparently tried to go to her grandmother’s house, but the grandmother was not home. She said she saw her daughter walking west on 34th Street. A lookout for the girl was broadcast.

• A woman called police after her cousin took her truck and never returned with it.

The woman said her cousin came from New York to live with her for a while. She said she left for work one afternoon and returned about 10 hours later.

The victim noticed that her truck and her cousin were both gone. The cousin later called the victim to tell her he would be home with the truck later that evening, but he never showed up.

The woman told police that the vehicle doesn’t have a current Georgia tag because it is registered in North Carolina. She also stated that the suspect took her old Georgia tag from another vehicle and put it on her truck. A case report number was given to the victim and a lookout was posted for her truck. w

Numerous witnesses saw Michael Stone charge into the parliament building in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in November, armed with bombs, a knife and a handgun. After he was wrestled to the floor, he was charged with trying to kill separatist leaders Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness, who were inside. However, in December, Stone said everything he did that day was merely “performance art replicating a terrorist attack.”

A credulous reporter for the Belfast Telegraph applauded Stone’s “use of mixed media and everyday materials,” which he said “show(ed) imagination.”

Bird Flu Surge

The United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) warned that a major resurgence of avian influenza is in progress across Asia. WHO spokesman Peter Cordingley cautioned that bird flu is a cold weather virus, and more cases are likely to develop over the cold months in the northern hemisphere. “We expect a repeat of last year, when the virus suddenly became very active,” spreading to the Middle East, Africa and Europe, Cordingley said. The warnings came as Indonesia reported its 60th confirmed death from the virus, and fresh outbreaks of bird flu in poultry were reported in Japan and Vietnam. Meanwhile, health officials in Indonesia announced that 20 percent of stray cats surveyed across the country carry the deadly H5N1 strain of avian influenza.

Flood Starvation

Scientists investigating the recent deaths of thousands of lesser flamingos at Kenya’s Lake Bogoria discovered the birds probably perished due to a lack of food in the wake of East Africa’s devastating floods. A team sponsored by the Earthwatch research organization found that many of the dead birds weighed only 63 percent of their normal body mass, suggesting malnutrition. Team leader David Harper, of the University of Leicester, believes torrential rainfall over the region during the past few months has depleted the birds’ normal food source of spirulina — a blue-green bacteria that floats on the surface of Lake Bogoria and other lakes across Kenya’s Rift Valley.

Comoros Rumblings

Searing midsummer heat across southeastern Australia sparked more wildfires that destroyed eight homes in the states of Victoria and New South Wales.

Residents in Melbourne and other blackedout cities were left to swelter as utility crews worked to repair a break in a main power transmission line brought down by fire.

Days of strong tremors at one of the world’s largest active volcanoes prompted officials in the Comoros Islands to draw up evacuation plans should the mountain erupt.

The country’s security chief, Oukacha Jaffar, told reporters that as many as 30,000 people could be forced from their homes on the main island of Grande Comore if the 7,746foot Mount Karthala becomes violently active.

More than 100 people perished in severe wintry conditions that spread across a wide area from southern Canada to the northern deserts of Mexico. Ice and snow shut down airports and made roads impassable, stranding thousands of travelers. Severe crop damage was reported at some farms and orchards in usually temperate California.

Tens of thousands of Japanese were ordered to higher ground after a magnitude 8.2 temblor in the Kuril Islands threatened to send a tsunami across the Pacific.

Tsunami watches were also issued for Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines and Hawaii before it became clear that only a small wave had been generated.

• Earth movements were also felt in eastern Japan, Taiwan, northwestern Turkey, Romania, New Zealand and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Ganges Flush

Officials in India ordered dams in the upper reaches of the Ganges to release large quantities of water to dilute pollution that had made the river so contaminated that the Hindu faithful were advised not to bathe in it during a religious festival. Sadhus, or Indian holy men, then declared the river safe for the up to 5 million people who later took a ceremonial plunge into the sacred waterway. It was the first of four auspicious days during the 45-day Ardh Kumbh festival, when Hindus believe bathing in the river will wash away their sins and help them attain salvation from the cycle of birth and rebirth.

Highway Robbery

A brazen hijacking, committed by a herd of elephants on a road through an eastern Thailand wildlife reserve, has officials considering the closure of the highway, at least at night. Yoo Senatham, chief of the Khao Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary in Chachoengsao province, said that a herd of about 20 pachyderms blocked the road and overturned many of the 10 trucks that were forced to stop. Loads of sugarcane and tapioca spilled onto the roadway, where the larger elephants and their young gorged on the pilfered goods.

“There have been many accidents on this road, leading to the deaths of thousands of animals, but this was the first highway robbery by elephants we’ve recorded,” said Senatham. He believes the elephants may have been encouraged to hijack the tasty cargo by the many passers-by who throw sugarcane and tapioca to them. w

The baron of ‘blurgrass’

Edgar Meyer headlines ‘Double Bass’ show at the Lucas Theatre dozens of artists both major and minor, can also lay claim to being one-third (along with cellist Yo-Yo Ma and fiddler Mark O’ Connor) of the trio that composed, arranged and recorded Appalachia Waltz, the smash crossover LP that topped the charts for almost four months back in the mid-’90s.

No slouch himself, Thile —while only in his early twenties— is already a veteran stage performer and recording artist who burst onto the national bluegrass scene as a child prodigy, and went on to become something of a combination virtuoso mandolinist and teen heartthrob in the wildly successful, Grammy-winning trio Nickel Creek.

That Platinum-selling group recently announced they were going on hiatus for an indefinite time, which should give Thile more time to concentrate on his increasingly disparate side projects — which have often leaned as much toward jazz fusion as they have low-key modern rock.

After a few missed opportunities, Edgar Meyer finally caught up with me for a brief chat, during a short break from his intense schedule of rehearsing and gigging with Thile.

I understand you’ve been writing some new material with Chris. Is that for this stretch of shows?

Edgar Meyer: Yeah. There’ll be four songs that we’re rotating in and out that are brand new. There are also six songs from our previous tour two years ago. There’s also some stuff that we’ll record later. That’s not drawn from our previous projects, it’s just for this. So, essentially, right now we have ten selections, and usually on any given night, eight of those are specifically for this project, and the rest of the music was originally created by Chris and I for other things. Sometimes together, but often not. We put those together just for these shows, and I must say that with Chris playing on some of the things that I had written or recorded in the past, it puts a very unique spin on them.

How did you and Chris initially hook up?

Edgar Meyer: Well, we all knew about him when he was growing up. He’s kind of a member of this extended community of people who sort of fall under a “bluegrass umbrella.” Everybody knows everybody, and truthfully, we all knew of him from the time he was ten or eleven. The first time he and I actually worked together was on his album Not All Who Wander Are Lost. That was great fun for me. I hadn’t done that sort of thing for a while, and I enjoyed being back in the middle of that and playing with a lot of the folk people from both his generation and from mine. At least for me, there are a lot of things that Chris is capable of doing as a musician that I haven’t really seen come out of the same person before.

The last time world-famous bassist and composer Edgar Meyer played Savannah, it was at our very own world-famous Savannah Music Festival.

This weekend, the celebrated acoustic artist returns for a one-night only appearance with another stellar string musician who has dazzled local audiences in the past: Nickel Creek mandolinist Chris Thile.

On their own, each half of this amazingly talented duo have earned more than their share of professional accolades and popular acclaim. Together, they represent both the history of their respective instruments as well as the future of contemporary acoustic music. Their continued partnership —the pair toured together with a similar show a couple of years back— helps to further smudge the lines between classical, acoustic “art” music and the more populist genres of Old-Time mountain music and modern folk. There’s even a distinct whiff of jazz-influenced jam-band grooves in their more improv-heavy pieces.

Call it blurgrass.

time, I love playing complicated music with him that’s written out beforehand. Whether it’s stuff I write, or Bach, or his own material, or anything else, for that matter.

What has been the most surprising aspect of working alongside Chris?

Edgar Meyer: Um...

Well, our relationship both musically and personally is continually evolving. I was unbelievably delighted early on to discover how remarkable his abilities are, and what a nice fellow he is. Those things continue to be wonderful, and since I had seen those aspects before, I’m not caught off guard by them (laughs).

If you are familiar with both our work, then it won’t be a surprise - but if you only knew one of us, then it might be a bit of a surprise. It’s truly a combination of the two.

How do you two delineate your roles as collaborators — or are there no hard and fast rules in this partnership?

Edgar Meyer: In general, I would say that as much as possible, we really try to share all

Edgar Meyer: Well, you know, the thing with Hank Williams, Jr. was very incidental. Frankly, I actually never even talked to him. His producer called me in and I spent about an hour and played a bass solo on a song of his. It actually wound up being a hit, but there’s not too much connection there. Yo-Yo Ma is someone I grew up listening to, and did lots of work with. I admire him greatly and we’re much closer in

many ways.

Looking at your prodigious output and your penchant for branching out into uncharted territories as far as your approach to your instrument goes, would it be safe to say that for you, when it comes to music, the journey is the destination?

Edgar Meyer: There is some truth to that, there definitely is. At the same time, I’d like to be trying to find something more than that. I don’t know. There’s a lot of truth to that — for me at least. I guess I don’t really have an answer for that question.

You’ve been with Sony Music for some time now, and they seem quite supportive of your varied interests. Do you imagine you’ll be content to stay with them for the long run, or do you harbor any interest in becoming a more independent artist who releases his own material?

Edgar Meyer: I have no idea. It’s both up to me and them, and I suppose we’ll take it step by step. The way that music is distributed is changing so fundamentally and so quickly, that I feel a little overwhelmed by those questions and can’t formulate quick or easy answers.

You’ve played Savannah in the past as part of

our music festival. What’s your impression of our city?

Edgar Meyer: Well, it’s very beautiful. You know, my father-in-law grew up there and had an incredible fondness for it. I’m also very familiar with what a good-looking and very comfortable place to be it is. Incidentally, the bass I play belonged to George Hofer, who lives in Savannah. He was the last owner before I bought it from him in 1983.

Actually my father bought it, but he bought it for me. So, my instrument has enjoyed a long sojourn in Savannah.

Does the bass enjoy coming back home? Can you tell?

Edgar Meyer: Oh, yeah. It’s very happy.

What can audiences in Savannah expect from this particular performance?

Edgar Meyer: If you are familiar with both our work, then it won’t be a surprise — but if you only knew one of us, then it might be a bit of a surprise. When art & technology collide

The Jepson presents cutting-edge Family Day This saturday at the Jepson Center, minds are going to be expanded. And maybe even blown.

The Telfair is hosting an event from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Jepson Center for the Arts that will celebrate creative uses of technology. Sound, video, robotics and computer artists will use technology to create their unusual art.

While the event has been described as a “family day,” even those without kids may want to check this one out. And while you’re there, keep both ears open for the sounds of the furtive Theremin.

Connect caught up with some of these high-tech artists.

Daniel Shiffman is a self-described “researcher, teacher and sometimes artist” who creates video art that is literally astonishing. Visitors to the Jepson Center have been enjoying three of Shiffman’s installations since the One of Shiffman’s installations in action Jepson opened last year.

Daniel Shiffman: I usually start with an algorithm or math problem that I find interesting. In the process of programming, I experiment until I find something I like on the screen.

Why do you involve the viewer?

Daniel Shiffman: I like the challenge of creating a simple, easy to experience interaction -- no mouse, no keyboard, no complex interface, just a video camera.

What inspires you to create a piece?

What type of research do you do?

Daniel Shiffman: I work on a variety of different projects. For example, I’m working on using text analysis algorithms to classify media content on the web. I’m also planning on developing an open source system to create screen-based artwork across multiple screens for large public displays.

What do you do to relax?

Daniel Shiffman: I love puzzles and games, particularly card games. I also like to read mystery novels and watch the TV shows Lost and The Wire.

We, Robots

Some people might say Savannah’s school system is substandard. Obviously, they haven’t seen the Johnson High School robotics team in action.

The team won a state award for their basketballplaying robot. But robotics isn’t limited to just high school students in Savannah.

The program incorporates elementary and middle-school students, too. A LEGO League competition was held in Savannah on Jan. 6th, and a VEX competition was held on Jan. 13.

The first step in teaching students how to create robots is to program them. The students, that is.

Connect spoke with Horton about robotics.

What types of students participate in the local high school robotics program?

Steve Horton: A complete, well rounded team would require mechanical types, designers, programmers, fund raisers, and so on, so there are many different personalities and skills required. Each school is represented by one robot, which represents all of the students’ efforts. Team work and cooperation is a required ingredient.

Steve Horton: Most teams have some girls.

Sound artists will have a strong presence at the expo. New Yorkbased Matthew Horan and Makiko Saito will demonstrate their new interactive sculpture In Tension.

It is a sound chamber that one or more players can enter. They then can make music on 18 bungee cords, which are connected to sensors and microcontrollers.

Penny Brice is a local multi-media artist who works primarily in sound. At the expo, she will help children (of all ages) make their own take-home sound recordings.

“Sound is one of the senses that is quite easily overlooked,” Brice says. “I am interested in encouraging children to work with the sound environment, to help them highlight what they listen to every day.”

Brice came to the United States from England and now teaches art history at the Savannah College of Art and Design. “The sounds here are very different,” she says. “Such things as leaf blowers, school buses are completely different.”

Its name may sound beastly, but in the hands of local musician Ricardo Ochoa, it also can make beautiful music. Ochoa will bring his Theremin to the expo for demonstrations and hands-on experiments.

Fans of old science fiction and horror movies are probably familiar with Theremin music. The Theremin was designed in 1919 and named for its creator, Russian-born Leon Theremin It’s considered to be the first instrument developed to create electronic music. Steve Horton: Each school is represented by a driving team and these teams are paired with rotating “alliance” partners. This means that all schools will work with and against the other schools several times during the competition. Teams have a pit area to work on their robots and there is an atmosphere of cooperation where everyone lends parts, shares ideas and helps each other to prepare for the qualifying heats.

What benefits do the students get?

Steve Horton: Students get to explore science, engineering and technology using the seductive attributes of competition to develop the muscle between the ears.

At the expo, Brice will set up metal objects, amplifiers and headphones in the Neises Auditorium. The Jepson is providing a rare opportunity to showcase artists who use technology, she says.

“I think it is nice, too, for students who are using technology to learn it can be used in artistic ways,” Brice says. “In other places, technology has been used in art for a long time.”

How does a Theremin work?

Ricardo Ochoa: It uses a radio antenna. You never touch the Theremin. The pitch and volume come from waving your hands around the Theremin.

You play many musical instruments. Why did you decide to learn to play the Theremin?

Ricardo Ochoa: Curiosity. I was interested in playing the instrument because of the sound it makes. It has the capacity to sound like the human voice. Also, I was interested in the fact that you don’t touch it to play it.

Is it difficult to learn?

Ricardo Ochoa: Yes. Like every other instrument, you never stop learning. It took me almost a year just to get a feel for it.

What will you be doing at the Jepson Center?

Ricardo Ochoa: I will show videos and play it and let people play it for themselves, especially young kids. I’d like them to come up and give it a try.

Penny Brice What type of reactions do people have to Theremin music?

Ricardo Ochoa: My favorite comes from the kids. Their mouths fall open! They don’t understand what is happening. The question most people ask is, “Where did you pick that up?” It’s an experience for people because it’s such an unusual instrument.

Where can people buy a Theremin?

Ricardo Ochoa: Thank goodness for eBay! You have to go online and order one. There are kits you can buy. They are very close to a radio transmitter, so they’re not difficult to build. There is a very large community of Thereminists. Some put them in old radios, others put them in plastic heads. People become very creative with it. But you don’t have many people lining up for Theremin lessons. w

“There is a role-playing game,” says Julie Sonnenberg-Klein, Georgia Technical College community outreach coordinator. “We have them put cards in the right order to ‘program’ a person.”

Robotics teaches teamwork and enhances other skills, Sonnenberg-Klein says. “They have to work in groups,” she says. “It helps their communication skills, their team building and their confidence.”

Competitions are held on local, regional and state levels. “It’s like a sporting event with parents cheering,” Sonnenberg-Klein says.

Letters from Iwo Jima 1/2

F

As dedicated moviegoers will recall, Eastwood already helmed one film in 2006: Flags of Our Fathers, a look at the stories behind the American soldiers who hoisted Old Glory on the Pacific island of Iwo Jima during the World War II battle. Flags largely met with respectable but restrained reviews and once it appeared to be DOA heading into award season, Eastwood and Warner Bros. elected to move Letters up from February 2007 and place it in limited release in order to qualify for the Oscars. Initially smacking of misplaced egotism, the move proved sound: Letters From Iwo Jima is far superior to Flags of Our Fathers, and coming out the gate it managed to snag Best Picture accolades from both the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the National Board of Review. Whereas Flags entirely provided the Yankee point of view, Letters gives us the perspective of the Japanese soldiers who fought and, for the most part, died in this bloody skirmish. Wisely, Eastwood and scripters Paul Haggis and Iris Yamashita (adapting Tadamichi Kuribayashi’s book, Picture Letters From Commander In Chief) stay away from the politics of the war in the Pacific, choosing instead to focus on the humanity of the Japanese men required to defend this island from a U.S. takeover. Warhawks will object -how dare Eastwood individualize our enemies! -- but the film’s approach is a commensensical one: If we condemn all foreigners who were pressed into fighting in a war they didn’t start or care to join, then we must likewise apply that mode of thinking to our own American troops, particularly those innocent boys and girls losing their lives in Bush’s reprehensible Iraq folly.

is the magnetic Ken Watanabe, who earned a well-deserved Oscar nomination for overshadowing Tom Cruise in The Last Samurai. Here, he plays General Kuribayashi (the author of the film’s literary source), a sensible leader who knows that he and his army are doomed but still does the best he can in an impossible situation. Kuribayashi is presented as a decent man and a compassionate leader -- unlike many of the other officers, he sees nothing cowardly in soldiers retreating and often suggests it over the expected norm of honorably committing suicide -- yet the real heart of the story rests with Saigo (Kazunari Ninomiya), a baby-faced baker who had to leave a pregnant wife behind when his government ordered him to pick up arms and defend the fatherland.

Pan’s Labyrinth 1/2 Curse of the Golden Flower

Will the real Zhang Yimou please stand up? This extraordinary talent was once responsible for such towering features as Ju Dou, To Live and Raise the Red Lantern (the latter still one of the top two or three imports of the past quarter-century), movies that led to his being tagged a world-class moviemaker in a relatively short period of time. These were opulent epics that nevertheless managed to display the heartbeat of personal drama -- humanist tales that were highly critical of government and politics (indeed, Ju Dou was banned outright by the Chinese authorities) and sympathetic toward the plight of ordinary citizens existing under brutal conditions.

But that was before fellow helmer Ang Lee scored a massive international hit with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Since then, Yimou has shifted from people to props, from storylines to stunts. Admittedly, Hero and House of Flying Daggers were both huge critical hits, but honestly, I don’t understand all the fuss: While visually stunning, both maintained a been-there-done-that vibe, and after enduring countless action scenes filled with complex wirework and trick photography, I found myself yearning for the relative simplicity of a Bruce Lee kick to the chest. At least that’s my minority report. Yet even staunch defenders of these recent martial arts opuses might throw their hands up when confronted with Yimou’s latest, the excessive extravaganza Curse of the Golden Flower. It’s based on a play by Yu Cao but seems to have been adapted by Yimou after he sat through a marathon viewing of soap operas. For all its attention to duplicity, incest and murder most foul, it’s less William Shakespeare and more Susan Lucci. Set in 928 A.D., it concerns the power plays that exist between Emperor Ping (Chow Yun-Fat), Empress Phoenix (Gong Li, Yimou’s former leading lady -- both personally and professionally -- back in the 1990s) and their three sons (Jay Chou, Ye Liu and Qin Junjie), one of whom is sleeping with his stepmother. For his part, the Emperor is slowly poisoning his wife; for her part, the Empress is plotting a coup against her spouse. And for their parts, each boy must decide whether to align himself with Mom or Pop. The costume and set designs are staggering, but the story unfolding amidst all the color and pageantry is more risible than rousing. Still, the dialogue-heavy sequences prove to be more compelling than the action scenes, which generally rely on repetitive battle footage and wholly unconvincing CGI work. Perhaps Zhang Yimou will one day return to the sort of picture that established his reputation in the first place. Otherwise, can a Rush Hour sequel be too far off? w

Let’s make this clear from the start: Pan’s Labyrinth is not one for the kiddies. Mexican writer-director Guillermo del Toro’s R-rated adventure is packed with disturbing images, political subtext and gory interludes.

In short, when was the last time a fantasy flick brought to mind Schindler’s List? Young Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) is a young girl of about 11. She’s a fatherless child in 1944 Spain, and her sympathetic though weak-willed mother Carmen (Ariadna Gil) has taken as her new husband an officer in Franco’s army. Captain Vidal (Sergi Lopez) is a terrifying entity, a Fascist who tortures prisoners with the same attention to detail that a philatelist pores over rare stamps. Stationed at a remote farm in rural Spain, where he and his men are attempting to flush out resistance fighters, Vidal orders the pregnant Carmen and Ofelia to join him at this dreary outpost. Ofelia immediately bonds with the captain’s

movies|Screenshots housekeeper (Maribel Verdu) -- who may or may not be a spy for the rebels -- but beyond that, there’s not much for a child to do at military headquarters other than to steer clear of her unfeeling stepfather and wander around. But while investigating her surroundings, Ofelia stumbles upon a hidden world -- a magical place where a faun (Doug Jones) relates a fantastic tale involving Ofelia’s lineage and then sends her off on a series of hazardous quests. The question at the heart of Pan’s Labyrinth -- and one which it steadfastly refuses to answer -- is whether the fantasy world is a physical reality (albeit one able to be seen only by a child, in the best storybook tradition) or whether it exists exclusively in Ofelia’s imagination. It’s perhaps a fair query -- and astute viewers will certainly enjoy perusing the screen for clues -- yet ultimately it doesn’t matter one way or the other. One of the best films of 2006, it’s too important to be marginalized as a genre flick.

No matter how closely I scoured each scene in Children of Men, I couldn’t find Charlton Heston lurking anywhere in the background. Yet a Heston cameo would have been apropos, given that this adaptation of P.D. James’ book harkens back to the cinema of the early 1970s, when Hollywood was hellbent on churning out nightmarish visions of the future in such works as THX 1138, Z.P.G., The Omega Man and Soylent Green (the latter two starring Heston). Yet whereas several of the 70s sci-fiers have ripened like cheese over time, it’s impossible to envision Children of Men ever reaching similar camp status. Director Alfonso Cuaron, building a remarkably diverse filmography (Y Tu Mama Tambien, A Little Princess, even a Harry Potter sequel), is an absolute master behind the camera, and aided by spectacular cinematography and set design, he creates a future world (the film is set in 2027) that is utterly believable and quite frightening, not least because it looks so much like our present-day world. The premise here is that women haven’t been able to get pregnant in nearly 20 years, meaning that humankind is on its way out. As a result, chaos is the order of the day, and only in London does there exist a pretense of a (barely) functional society. But when it’s revealed that an immigrant (Clare-Hope Ashitey) somehow finds herself carrying a child, it’s up to a working drone (Clive Owen in a forceful performance) to protect her from the various political factions that would exploit her for their own cynical means. The multi-tentacled storyline begs for a mini-series length that would allow for a detailed exploration of this society’s clashing politics, philosophies and social orders, but armed with only a featurefilm running time, Cuaron still manages to pack a lot of incident into this exciting tale of our world as one gargantuan war zone.

Little Children 1/2

A richly textured and profoundly pensive drama that missed making my 10 Best list by one slot, Little Children finds Todd Field returning to the battlefields of Everytown, USA, that marked his startling directorial debut, In the Bedroom. An adaptation of Tom

Perrotta’s novel, Little Children offers a petri dish dissection of several of the residents of a Massachusetts suburb in which most of the adults’ lives are defined by the manner in which they relate to the kids who scamper around the margins of both their lives and the movie itself. Sarah Pierce (Kate Winslet) and Brad Adamson (Patrick Wilson) are both unhappily married stay-at-homes who engage in an adulterous tryst scheduled around outings to the pool and the park with their small fry. First, though, they have to navigate their way around the disapproving clucks of their neighborhood’s battalion of soccer moms, robo-parents whose familial devotion has stripped them of anything resembling a personality or an inner life. And then there’s Ronnie McGorvey (Jackie Earle Haley), a convicted sex offender whose emergence in this quiet community understandably draws attention, though it also allows the other residents the opportunity to smooth over their own flaws. The entire cast is superb -- as Ronnie’s blind date, Jane Adams is sensational in a role that would draw award attention were it not so brief -- but it’s former 70s child star Haley who’s the most memorable. His sexual predator is by turns loathsome and sympathetic -- not unlike most of the “normal” characters in the film -- and Haley is able to locate the humane within the inhuman. It’s a complex portrayal, perfectly suited to the weighty movie that shelters it.

Notes On a Scandal 

Judi Dench is so good at what she does that in recent years, she’s become something of a bore. Aside from her atypical role as an Alzheimer’s victim in Iris -- the one time her character wasn’t in control of everything happening on the screen -- she’s always cast as the no-nonsense matriarch with more brains and gumption than anyone else in the room.

Her career’s been in a depressing holding pattern, culminating in an utterly unexceptional performance in 2005’s Mrs. Henderson Presents. Notes On a Scandal doesn’t exactly find her breaking away from this mold, but because she’s given so many more nuances to explore, she’s able to excel via her finest work in quite some time. Here, she’s playing a character so pitiless that she refers to a boy with Down’s Syndrome as “a court jester.” The lad is the son of Sheba Hart (solid Cate Blanchett, not surrendering an inch of the screen to her formidable costar), a newly arrived instructor at the same British school where the humorless Barbara Covett (Dench) also teaches. Initially irked by the presence of this luminous newcomer, Barbara eventually becomes her confidante, imagining in her mind that their affection for each other might even run deeper than mere friendship. After Sheba foolishly starts an affair with a 15-year-old student (Andrew Simpson), Barbara feels betrayed, but also realizes that she now has a perfect instrument of blackmail at her disposal. Notes On a Scandal is little more than a lurid melodrama -- one that could benefit from some late-inning twists, I might add -- but Dench and Blanchett, slinging around juicy dialogue by scripter Patrick Marber (from Zoe Heller’s book), turn this into something more.

Volver 

Perhaps no performer gets lost in translation as much as Spain’s Penelope Cruz. In her American titles to date, she’s proven to be a big fat zero, yet return her to Spanish-speaking fare, and she reveals herself as a warm, witty and accomplished actress. That’s especially evident in Volver, the latest confection from writer-director Pedro Almodovar. So memorable as the troubled nun in Almodovar’s All About My Mother, Cruz is equally up to the task here; she portrays Raimunda, a headstrong woman who has her hands full managing the other females who inhabit her orbit. This would include her teenage daughter Paula (Yohana Cobo), who just killed the stepfather who was trying to rape her; Raimunda’s sister Sole (Lola Duenas),

a plain-Jane counterpart who tries to keep up with her glamorous sibling’s whirlwind activities; Agustina (Blanca Portillo), a family friend trying to solve a mystery involving missing parents; and, most perplexing of all, Raimunda and Sole’s mother Irene (Carmen Maura), who keeps popping up to offer advice even though she’s been dead for several years. Almodovar’s in a playful mood here (no other living director works with splashy colors as effectively), yet there’s no mistaking the seriousness with which he takes the movie’s theme of empowerment through sisterhood. Like George Cukor, another filmmaker known for being a “woman’s director,” Almodovar repeatedly draws superlative performances from his actresses, and in Penelope Cruz, he may have found his latest muse.

The Pursuit of Happyness 

Anyone who’s seen the trailer knows that the movie has only two things on its mind: 1) Win Will Smith an Oscar and 2) drive up Kleenex profits by unleashing a flood of sobworthy moments. Whether it succeeds in achieving either goal remains to be seen, but 1) Will Smith does indeed turn in a strong performance (though hardly the year’s best) and 2) the picture is skilled enough to generate some genuine pathos to go along with the more calculated melodramatics. This is based on the true story of Chris Gardner, a failed salesman in the 1980s who tries to raise his son (Jaden Christopher Syre Smith) even as he descends further into poverty. The moving and sincere work by Will and his real-life son Jaden (a confidant and relaxed actor) cuts through all pretensions (even the instant happy ending) and allows The Pursuit of Happyness to earn at least some of its tears.

The Good Shepherd 

This fictionalized look at the creation of the Central Intelligence Agency is methodical in its style and intelligent in its execution, which in some circles will translate as dull, slow-moving and impenetrable . Yet patient viewers will find much to appreciate in this chilly yet absorbing drama, which takes the cherished ideal of patriotism and turns it on its head. On the heels of The Departed, Matt Damon delivers another bold performance that seeks no audience empathy -- here, he’s cast as Edward Wilson, whose role as one of the founders of the CIA finds him over the course of several decades having to contend with all manner of Cold War shenanigans, including the presence of a mole within his own agency. Directed with a fine attention to detail

by Robert De Niro (who also appears in a key supporting role), The Good Shepherd repeatedly runs the risk of losing viewers with its flashback-laden structure drafted by scripter Eric Roth. But the strength of the film rests in its clear-eyed vision of Edward Wilson, whose fierce devotion to his country in turn strips him of his humanity and reduces him to a suspicious and paranoid cypher.

This film plays with fire by employing the services of three overexposed actors -- Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson and Robin Williams (only Will Ferrell is missing) -- and potentially allowing them to run rampant through an overstuffed fantasy yarn. Mercifully, Stiller is muted, Williams is similarly restrained, and Wilson... well, Wilson is still annoying (two out of three ain’t bad). Stiller plays Larry Daley, the new night watchman at a museum where the exhibits come to life after the venue closes. The benevolent Teddy Roosevelt (Williams) is helpful, but Larry has his hands full evading Attila the Hun, dealing with a mischievous monkey, and settling squabbles between a miniature cowboy (Wilson) and an equally diminutive Roman commander (Steve Coogan).

Apocalypto 

Flush from making gazillions from The Passion of the Christ, Mel Gibson used his clout to create a film that under any other circumstances would have been laughed right out of the studio boardroom: a lengthy, subtitled period epic about the Mayan civilization. For a while, it does offer something fresh. Gibson takes us back in time to the waning period of the Mayan civilization. It turns out that Gibson isn’t interested in educating either us or himself; instead, Apocalypto degenerates into a straightforward action flick. Worse, the switch to pure action also allows Gibson to indulge in his by-now predictable sadism.

satisfying, hampered by a structure that feels schematic rather than organic. By the very nature of the competing story strands and arcs, all three of the pair’s films have risked coming across as cinematic jigsaw puzzles, more interested in moving around pieces until they fit rather than in investing emotionally in the characters. But both 21 Grams and Amores Perros featured a haunting humanity -- to say nothing of more developed characters -- that’s often missing here. Their main topic here is the lack of communication that exists between people, a concept already beautifully deconstructed by Robert Altman in his 1993 gem Short Cuts. But whereas Altman focused exclusively on Los Angelenos, Inarritu and Arriaga go global, employing the butterfly effect to show how the consequences of a specific action can be felt around the world. In one plot strand, a Moroccan goat herder (Mustapha Rachidi) buys a used rifle and gives it to his two sons with the order to shoot any jackals that threaten the herd.

In a second storyline, an American couple (Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett) on vacation are plunged into a nightmare when the wife is accidentally shot by one of the aforementioned young boys, who was merely trying to gauge the distance a bullet can travel. In another, the American couple’s two children are hauled over the U.S.-Mexico border by their nanny (Adriana Barraza), whose decision to attend her son’s wedding looks ill-informed once she experiences difficulty crossing back to our side. And in the final story, a deaf teenage girl (Rinko Kikuchi) in Tokyo grows increasingly frustrated as she’s unable to find any male who’s willing to provide her with love and compassion. w

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): The swan is a beautiful bird, right? If you see one gliding across a pond, it evokes in you a feeling of calm. In fairy tales, it’s a symbol of natural grace, an emblem of animal elegance.

But those lovely associations are becoming irrelevant in England, where swan populations have grown so massive and voracious that they’re threatening ecosystems and damaging biodiversity. I guess we could say that their destructive overabundance exemplifies the theme of *too much of a good thing.* It’s an apt metaphor for the challenge I believe you’ll face in the coming days, Virgo.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You recently went through a phase whose quality I might compare to a dry, crunchy, bran-heavy breakfast cereal without milk. It fed your hunger, though it wasn’t particularly tasty or thrilling. It was highly concentrated and good for your digestion. Now you’re slipping into a kind of Cracker Jack mode, with lots of airy puffs of popcorny sweetness and an occasional nut, climaxed by a toy surprise. Studies done by The Institute for the Study of Universal Addiction indicate that 97 percent of all families are dysfunctional. You should, however, feel bad if you pass up the opportunities you now have to heal the ravages caused by your dysfunctional family. Here’s a good place to start: By trying to dissolve your habit of feeling victimized, damaged, or burdened by the people with whom you shared your original home, you could release yourself from a curse you’ve been casting on yourself--and magically set in motion overdue changes in your other family members.

A review of the 2006 economy and a forecast for 2007 reveal some interesting trends in real estate. While most markets anticipate a cooling down period, it’s important to understand that the hottest markets accelerated real estate to the point where an adjustment is desperately needed.

It’s hard to believe that in 2005, the national average for home appreciation was over twelve percent! The market simply cannot continue to bear that figure, but appreciation will continue in the five to six percent range, and early reports indicate that this year will be among the four best ever in real estate.

It makes sense that the very hottest markets with the very highest prices will see a fall in sales. On the other hand, strong but reasonable markets should actually begin selling faster. Basically, there’s no need for concern if listing periods remain at six months or less.

Of course, unknown factors can affect these trends, such as oil prices, inflation and interest rates. However, business spending remains robust in 2006, and a strong economy is anticipated to be a positive influence on real estate.

While interest rates may rise a couple times in the coming year, they should still remain at or below seven percent. Considering rates were about double that twenty years ago, you can see that we’re still very optimistic about home ownership!
