The council that sits around this table in January is going to have some real hard decisions moving forward in the four years they’re going to be facing.

— Alderman Bill Durrence AMID what by many measures is a historic national and local economic boom, the City of Savannah is — incredibly — facing a serious budget crisis within the next year or two.

Despite record-high tourism, recordhigh port activity, and a frenzy of development in some areas, City Council was warned in a workshop last week that “The

Future labor costs form a large part of the future challenge facing the City. There are over 300 current vacancies in the public safety/public works area alone, as the City finds itself in the same boat as the local food/beverage and hospitality industries in having a hard time filling positions.

Any attempt to fully staff current City positions at anywhere near competitive salary levels will be an enormous budgetary challenge moving forward.

Monahan boiled down the basic issue facing Savannah’s budget to “Slow growth” — meaning not in development, but in slow growth of tax revenue.

Amazingly, City property tax revenue

The only truly robust area of tax revenue seems to be sales taxes, in the form of standard City sales tax, the one percent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST), and the hotel/motel tax, which largely goes back into funding local tourism marketing.

But sales taxes are hardly a panacea.

They are the most regressive of taxes, disproportionately impacting the working poor.

They are also the most volatile form of tax. A recession would drive down tourism, currently a huge driver of local sales taxes.

Like robbing Peter to pay Paul, the focus on tourism and downtown has had a direct impact on other areas.

For example, two suggested SPLOST expenditures totalling nearly $15 million would go to pay for the seemingly endless Broughton “streetscaping.”

“We’re going to have to identify ways that we can cut what things cost us, or we’re going to have to identify some kind of new revenue, because what we’ve got right now from what I’ve seen is not sustainable.” — Alderman Durrence revenue base is not growing as fast as the expenditure base,” in the words of City Budget Director Melissa Carter.

If the national slowdown they anticipate happens in the next couple of years, “In 2021 we’re going to see a lot of adjustments we’ve made on both sides, revenues and expenditures, come home to roost,” Carter said ominously.

New Interim City Manager Pat Monahan has his hands full coping with the economic picture left behind in the wake of Rob Hernandez’s departure earlier this summer.

(Ironically, leave payouts to Hernandez and other recent high-level departing officials have added to the budget challenges.)

While currently there are no plans to raise City property taxes for the second time in two years, Alderman Bill Durrence said at some point the City will face a reckoning.

“We are not keeping up with the way our expenses are growing…. We’re going to have to identify ways that we can cut what things cost us, or we’re going to have to identify some kind of new revenue, because what we’ve got right now from what I’ve seen is not sustainable,” Durrence said.

“I don’t want us four or five years from

Sound shocking given the amount of residential turnover we’ve seen the past few years? Monahan says that’s one of the “unintended consequences” of the countywide Stephens/Day homestead exemption, which freezes property taxes at the purchase price.

“That’s why it’s necessary to talk about maintenance” on SPLOST projects, he said, “to take some of the pressure off of the General Fund. Because the General Fund is not growing… We see all this construction going on in the community, but the General Fund doesn’t reflect that in terms of new growth.”

(SPLOST funds, currently the City’s second-highest revenue stream, are limited by state law to capital and infrastructure costs, not maintenance or staffing.)

While there was no talk of resurrecting the defunct and hated Fire Fee, there is at least the hint of serious talk about somehow getting SCAD to pony up the equivalent of property taxes, likely in the form of PILOT (Payments In Lieu of Tax).

While the huge amount of property in City limits off the tax rolls might be our biggest elephant in the room, I wouldn’t hold my breath on that one if I were you.

Indeed, as the City is looking at regular budget issues, they are also – literally as I write this – finalizing their project list for the next round of SPLOST. Savannah will get about 40 percent of countywide revenue from SPLOST VII, assuming it’s approved by voters in November. Beloved projects are taking a hit, as Monahan and Council chose to focus largely on infrastructure projects.

The Tide to Town urban trail, for example, as of this writing was set to be off the SPLOST list, in a potentially devastating blow to local cycling/greenway advocates.

Alderman Tony Thomas echoed a growing complaint about the SPLOST process.

“It’s our faults — it’s the elected bodies’ faults — because we got away from the heavy-duty projects that SPLOST was intended for,” Thomas said.

“I can tell you exactly where it happened. It was in SPLOST III… They did polling and it showed that SPLOST was in trouble. And in order to get neighborhood support, they went out and sprinkled these neighborhood projects into SPLOST to pass it,” Thomas said.

It will all be up to you again this November, as you vote up or down on SPLOST VII, and on who will be gathered around the budget table for the next four years. CS

FOR nineteen years, Savannah’s children have had a second home in Urban Hope, the nonprofit founded by Jack Roszkowiak.

During the school year, Urban Hope runs concurrent with the school calendar and gives kids from first to eighth grades a place to come after school.

“They work on homework, tutoring, special projects,” says site manager Covardis Broadie. “If they’re lacking in a subject, we try to assign someone to them to work specifically with that subject.”

“The Urban Hope staff does a great job of serving as a second parent because they actually have contact with the kids’ teachers,” says board member Cassie Beckwith.

An important point in Urban Hope is that the children are most certainly our future.

“These children are Savannah’s workforce,” says Beckwith. “We talk about workforce a lot, and there’s not enough skilled laborers. These kids are 95 future employees, and if they’re coming to Urban Hope, they have more of a successful rate of being able to come out on the other side as citizens that are respectful and loving and able to do things for their community.”

“We start taking our children here at a very young age that do have the potential to be an employee here as they transition from eighth to ninth grade,” says Broadie.

In fact, Urban Hope doesn’t just end for its kids in eighth grade. The Student Leader Program for high school students

allows them to assist the younger Urban Hope students and learn what it’s like to have a job.

“With some of the kids, they have something they’re working towards,” says Broadie.

While Urban Hope is a Christian-based ministry, Beckwith stresses that it’s open to all.

“The children are taught devotion and about God and that God loves them, but I think it’s important for people to know that we’re open to any and everybody,” says Beckwith. “We never want anybody to be turned away because they’re not Christians—we love all. “THERE IS no real transition from military life to civilian life for any veteran,” says Pastor Candace Hardnett of Agape Empowerment Ministries.

And she should know—she is a United States Marine Corps veteran.

“Literally you are trained for months and months on end to become a military member.”

Hardnett received 18 months of training to become a Marine, “and when I got out, I was given a three day workshop on how to put a resume together and go on an interview. Bye, good luck, see you later,” she says.

“There was no dismantling of who I had become—you literally become someone different and you are taught to kill and to have no worry or thought about it,” Hardnett recalls.

“When you come out in the civilian world, you aren’t turned off—you were created and you weren’t uncreated—and you have to navigate that, and for some people, especially those who saw combat, it is almost impossible. How do you do that on your own?”

Pastor Candace Hardnett, Father Michael Chaney, and Reverend Kevin Veitinger all work with some of the 4,200 people who are homeless in our community. They estimate that of the homeless people that they directly work with, about 25% are veterans.

“Veterans have gotten the shaft,” says Father Chaney.

“The VA is understaffed and underfunded and they can’t really do their jobs to the fullest. A lot of veterans are getting shoved out the door and they find themselves in positions where maintaining what we would call a normal life becomes really challenging and they don’t want to sleep inside because something feels safer about sleeping outside,” he says.

neighbors and understand that all of us are walking different paths and encounter different obstacles in our life and it is up to us to really take care of one another.”

Homelessness is extremely complex— this could be a weekly column all year and we still would not scratch the surface.

From broken systems, housing first initiatives that in the long run cost the municipalities less, to the 9th US Circuit of Appeals prohibiting the criminalization of homelessness stating that governments cannot “criminalize conduct that is an unavoidable consequence of being homeless—namely sitting, lying, or sleeping on the streets”—everyone has a Constitutional right to sleep on a park bench, under a bridge, or on the public sidewalk, regardless of how some might think it looks to tourists.

The causes of homelessness are just as diverse as the population, from homeless veterans, to the train kids with their own unique hieroglyphic-type symbols, to the over one thousand homeless children that attend Savannah-Chatham County public schools.

Hiding the problem is not going to make it go away—and we need to all do better, from our elected officials, to each and everyone one of us looking out for our neighbors who live in tents.

“Little tiny things, like looking people in the eye to say hello. You are not going to be robbed by a homeless person 999 times out of 1,000, but there is a dignity—offering people the dignity of looking them in the eye and say hello,” says Veitinger.

“Ask them their name,” says Chaney.

“Names are important and it brings back this basic human dignity that we take for granted that a lot of our friends lost.”

NewZO era set to begin

Proponents of Savannah’s new zoning ordinance are celebrating its adoption

by City Council and citing it as a model for collaboration between citizens and government.

“In Savannah many small businesses are aligning with healthier food options to help make the healthy choice easier.

NewZO underscores these opportunities and will definitely strengthen the social fabric of all neighborhoods creating healthier communities,” she said.

Kreissler said there are even more potential benefits, particularly if the ordinance is strengthened going forward.

Remember, it’s not perfect. Kreissler already sees next steps to make the ordinance better.

“Shorter block requirements, grid patterns for blocks, mixed use retail and housing, and accessory dwelling units would all contribute to thriving neighborhoods. If these are allowed to manifest we will have improved connectivity for walking and biking – resulting in increased physical activity,” she said.

Durrence described the public input campaign conducted in advance of NewZO as “messy, time-consuming, and difficult,”

but also said it should serve as a model of how to involve citizens in the process and contribute to the discussion in meaningful ways.

He credited City of Savannah Planning and Urban Design Director Bridget Lidy and Chatham County -Savannah Metropolitan Planning Commission Development Director Marcus Lotson for their leadership and determination to seek input from all stakeholders.

And for their patience.

Compared to the standard hearing format, in which citizens are allowed to approach a podium and speak for three minutes or less, the process undertaken

by Lidy and Lotson was much more inclusionary and immersive, Durrence said.

This allowed participants to find common ground, even if they didn’t ultimately agree on everything.

“What’s really wonderful to see, as a planner who’s been living in savannah since 2007, is government agencies working with each other and with neighborhood associations and community groups on a truly collaborative effort,” said Whitney

Shephard, principal engineer/planner for Transport Studio, a transportation planning and engineering services firm.

“It’s a win for all of the people who have volunteered their time over the last ten years,” she said. “I want people to participate and have a voice in policy making, and council’s adoption of NewZO confirms that citizens who become involved can make a difference.”

Kreissler agreed.

“Over the last several years the collaboration between public and private partners to get this to City Council for a vote was amazing. The Metropolitan Planning Commission and City of Savannah staff eagerly engaged many sectors to get this first major move on zoning into law,” she said.

“So many organizations, including Healthy Savannah, were at the table helping to create the bridge from the outdated ordinance of the 1960s to the one that was passed at city council on July 18. Collaboration is the key and model to follow for any campaign and implementation to be successful.” CS 11

AFTER YEARS of delays and discussion, and perhaps the most intensive public outreach campaign undertaken by the City of Savannah in recent memory, a new zoning ordinance was adopted by City Council at its July 18 meeting.

While NewZO is not perfect (the editor of this publication jokingly suggested a drinking, game based on the frequency with which even supporters uttered that phrase) it’s certainly superior to the ordinance it replaces, which was crafted in the 1960s.

“NewZO is not perfect and it never will be,” said District 2 Alderman Bill Durrence. “It’s a dynamic document.”

Once Council officially repeals the existing ordinance, NewZO will go into effect on Sept. 1, but will not be applied retroactively to projects currently in the approval pipeline.

Durrence said a six-month grace period will extend to March 2020, during which developers may choose to comply with NewZO or the older ordinance.

After that, it’s all NewZO all the time.

According to Durrence, the first benefits of the new zoning ordinance may not be immediately noticeable, but are significant. He said he knows of several developers who were waiting on the sidelines for the ordinance to pass and will now move forward with their plans, including some slated for the Waters Avenue corridor.

Paula Kreissler, REACH program manager and director of healthy living and community development for Healthy Savannah, also sees short-term benefits for local businesses in the form of, “considerably more flexibility and freedom on parking requirements.”

As I have written in the past, some of Savannah’s most cherished public spaces — including Forsyth Park — could not exist if we wanted to create them today because there’s not enough parking to meet minimums. Many beloved historic structures are also noncompliant with the old ordinance.

However, NewZO is not just about parking and buildings according to Kreissler.

HOMICIDES Homicide on 49th Street

Savannah Police Violent Crimes detectives made an arrest in the homicide of a 70-year-old woman on Thursday, July 18.

“At around 9 p.m., officers responded to a residence on the 700 block of E. 49th Street to conduct a welfare check. Upon arrival, they located Nancy Hunt deceased with apparent injuries that were not selfinflicted,” police report.

Sean Hunt, 29, who is the victim’s son, was on scene when officers arrived.

“He was brought in for questioning and upon further investigation, it was determined that he was responsible for the homicide. He was charged with murder and transported to the Chatham County Detention Center without incident,” police say.

Three arrested for June Shooting

Savannah Police’s Violent Crimes detectives have made three arrests in a shooting at Colonial Village at Marsh Cove on June 10.

Rondall Udon Newsome, 21 has been charged with home invasion, aggravated assault, two counts of cruelty to childrenfirst degree, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. A 16-year-old male has been charged with party to a crime (home invasion) and party to a crime (aggravated assault).

A third suspect, Shanard Maurice Ford, 20, has been arrested in connection to this investigation. He has been charged with home invasion, aggravated assault and cruelty to children.

“Around 8:30 p.m. June 10 officers responded to the apartment complex at 11400 White Bluff Road and discovered Joseph Wilder, 28, suffering from gunshot wounds. Soon after, Newsome and a teen male arrived at the hospital, also suffering from gunshot wounds. The investigation resulted in Newsome and the teen being identified as suspects in the shooting. Both suspects turned themselves into police on July 16,” police report.

Larry Branson named director of CrimeStoppers

Savannah-Chatham County CrimeStoppers announced this morning that 30-year law enforcement veteran Larry Branson will serve as the program’s new director.

The Savannah native spent his career with Savannah Police Department and retired in 2015 as the senior major responsible for the patrol division.

“We are fortunate to have Larry as our new director. Our mission to solve crime is one that is better served by a leader who understands the importance of tapping into neighborhoods and reaching those who may be too afraid to talk and have something to share with police,” said Andrew Davis, board chairman, Savannah-Chatham County CrimeStoppers.

NEWS & OPINION NEWS OF THE WEIRD Clay County (Missouri) Sheriff’s officers didn’t have to put their tracking skills to much use as they searched for a fugitive in early July near Liberty, Missouri, according to Fox2. The unnamed man, who was wanted for possession of a controlled substance, gave himself away by loudly passing gas in his hiding spot. Deputies noted on Facebook: “If you’ve got a felony warrant for your arrest, the cops are looking for you and you pass gas so loud it gives up your hiding spot, you’re definitely having a (poop emoji) day.”

Least Competent Criminal

In Shawnee, Oklahoma, Brandon Killian, 29, was already in trouble for brutally beating Jarric Carolina in a June brawl. But as he sat in custody, he told an officer that his face was injured from being “first socked” during the fight.

When the officer left the room to get a camera, Killian, who was being recorded, punched himself multiple times in the face (strangely using one hand to propel the other fist into his cheek). Now his charges include preparing false evidence, KFOR reported. “Lying to the police and creating a false report will not be tolerated,” warned District Attorney Allan Grubb.

Killian is currently serving time in the Oklahoma County Jail for a separate drug court violation.

A kindly grandfather, who just wanted to treat nurses at Warrington Hospital in Cheshire, England, for the good care given to a relative, unwittingly gave them a red velvet cake laced with cannabis on May 27. According to Sky News, the man got the cake from his grandson’s 18th birthday party and presented it to staff at the hospital. An unnamed staff member said three or four of the nurses were “off their faces” afterward, and another noted how “relaxed” they were. Cheshire police destroyed what remained of the cake after the incident.

Ted Richards of Bristol, England, isn’t your run-of-the-mill bird lover. He admires parrots so much that he has had his face tattooed with feathers and his eyes colored with tattoo ink, risking blindness.

A plumber renovating the former Centralia High School in Centralia, Illinois, unearthed a 75-year-old trove of memories in late June. Inside a bathroom wall heat vent, he discovered 15 women’s wallets, all from students at the school in the mid-1940s. The cash was missing, but photographs, IDs and other materials were still in the billfolds. “War is ending,” said Seth Baltzell, pastor of the City Hope Church, which is converting the building.

“So there are lots of things like pictures of soldiers.” Baltzell posted pictures of the wallets on Facebook, and relatives of 89-year-old Betty June Sissom of Chesterfield, Missouri, saw them. “I remember I lost my wallet,” Sissom told KSDK. “Oh my goodness, look at the boy’s pictures I have ... They took all the money, huh?” Sorry, Betty.

Inexplicable

On the afternoon of July 7, Timothy Smith, 24, and his fiancee returned to their new home in Gresham, Oregon, to find things not quite right. They noted items out of place, others that didn’t belong to them, a mirror ripped out of a bathroom and holes kicked in bedroom walls. Then they found a cat (wearing a green cashmere shirt belonging to Smith’s chihuahua) hiding in a crawl space, The Oregonian reported, and called police.

Fifteen minutes later, officers emerged from the house with Ryan Bishop, 38, wearing the woman’s Christmas onesie.

Smith told reporters the man had broken into the home and settled right in, eating a cupcake, making coffee, smoking Smith’s weed, playing video games and collecting a clean, warm onesie out of the dryer. Bishop was charged with first-degree burglary, first-degree criminal mischief and thirddegree theft. Smith is seeking a home for the cat. His fiancee declined the return of her onesie.

Pool maintenance workers in Boca Raton, Florida, were interrupted on July 5 when one of them was shot in the leg with a pellet gun. “I heard him scream at the top of his lungs,” homeowner E-Lyn Bryan told WPTV, “and he had blood coming out of his leg and he was shot by the hunter.” Police responding to the shooting said someone hired to kill iguanas in the neighborhood shot the pool boy instead. “If neighbors are gonna be like the Wild West and shoot at everything, someone is gonna get killed,” Bryan said. It was unclear whether the shooter was caught or charged.

Jung Soon Wypcha, 66, took retail competition to a new level in Indian Shores, Florida, in June, where over several days she sabotaged Lu Lu’s Ice Cream shop, located next door to her Indian Shores Food Mart. The two shops share a bathroom, and starting on June 17, video showed Wypcha (1) used the bathroom with the door open and didn’t wash her hands, then went to the ice cream freezer and put her hands into the containers; (2) picked her nose, then put her hands into the containers; (3) spit into the containers.

Wypcha’s piece de resistance took place on June 22, when she urinated into an ice cream bucket, then dumped the bucket in a sink where ice cream utensils and bowls are washed. Memphis-based band comes to El Rocko

AT FIRST listen of Hash Redactor’s Drecksound, the Memphis band’s first LP that was released in April, one thing is clear—this is a band that doesn’t hang on to the traditions of punk. Sure, the record is undeniably influenced by 70s punk like The Stooges and even early 80s post-punk, but it also delves into musical and sonic territory that recalls early garage bands like The Sonics. They also play around with melody and arrangement; all of this comes together to create a record that is lo-fi in the best way, captivating, and layered in dense intensity.

The band has been touring steadily since Drecksound was released, and they’re set for a stop at El Rocko Lounge on Tues., July 30 alongside Valley Gals, Pearl & the Oysters, and Dirtbike. Ahead of the gig, we spoke to the band’s Alec McIntyre about everything from recording to tape to the Memphis DIY community.

You guys were all in different bands prior to coming together. How did you get together?

McIntyre: This initially started out as kind of just an in town project with me and Meredith [Lones], our bass player. We live together, and it was more of a natural thing. It started as that. We’ve all known each other for probably about 10 years, just being in the Memphis DIY scene. Playing in each other’s bands, playing shows, all of that kind of stuff.

George [Williford] was available, so we asked him to join. And then our initial drummer quit for personal reasons, so Charlotte [Watson] asked to join the band after that. So we’ve been kind of keeping it rolling; writing songs together, but not really with any intention other than to make music for ourselves.

You mentioned the DIY scene in Memphis. What’s that like? Are there a lot of bands in your wheelhouse?

McIntyre: There’s a lot of tumbleweeds in the DIY scene [laughs]. There are people who are still fighting the good fight, but it’s one of those towns where if you go out to a show and see out of town bands coming

It’s funny you say that, because it’s similar in the town where I grew up.

The motivation for bands to tour was in part because our hometown didn’t offer much past a certain point. Was that part of the impetus for you guys to start going on the road—to go out and find your people?

McIntyre: Yeah, I suppose so. Touring is nice because you can go find your people for a brief moment and then hide back under a rock. Our people are generally freaks and weirdos [laughs]. Memphis is a good place for us, personally. It’s definitely not suited for everybody.

It’s a good home base!

McIntyre: Yeah! And it helps being in the middle of the country. We’re not stuck on one side, so it’s not impossible to get to the west coast. And doing an east coast run like we’re doing this time around is completely manageable.

Do you feel like you guys knew what kind of band you wanted to be stylistically from day one?

McIntyre: It definitely evolved, because we changed members. My initial idea for it was going to be more of a rambling, fried out kind of Meat Puppets thing. We couldn’t play that, so we just kind of wound up finding our common ground. There are certainly influences that we draw on, just to center it. We obviously listen to a lot of English post punk stuff and a lot of American DIY, but I don’t think we’re trying to do any one thing.

It sounds like an amalgamation of things. I heard stuff like The Birthday Party in there!

McIntyre: We certainly have our heroes.

We’re all big Rowland S. Howard fans. I listen to his records way more often than I listen to one particular Birthday Party release, but yeah—it’s all within that continuum.

Tell me about recording the new record to tape.

McIntyre: Well, mainly we did it on tape because that’s the only way that we know how to record [laughs]. We’re all pretty terrible technical luddites! Computers make no fucking sense to me, and that was not a language that I was going to try and become versed in. It was just easier. A friend of ours had a tape machine, and we all figured it out.

Ultimately though, we did have to kind of reply on some digital help. We did have to rely on some digital help. We recorded it all at home, in our practice space. And while that was all fine and good, when the tape starts to disintegrate things get a little scary. So we had to enlist the help of our friend Matt Qualls, who mixed the record, to dump everything down to Pro Tools and basically rescue the audio there.

The reason it sounds good is because he saved our asses! [laughs].

Do you like the challenge of recording to tape and having boundaries on the amount of takes you could do, etc.?

McIntyre: Sure! I mean, it has its ups and downs. We’re not analog snobs—I’d like to think that we wouldn’t have turned this into a prog rock album if we’d done it all in Pro Tools. I think we exercised enough taste on our own. But who knows, we might wind up doing our next record all digitally if it’s more convenient and seems safer. Rather than having the tape machine blow up while we’re trying to finish it. CS

in that are at all interesting, nine out of 10 people in the crowd are in bands. There’s not a lot of an audience for the kind of stuff that we do. We try to bring our friends through, and bands that we want to see in town, but there isn’t exactly a thriving scene.

There are lots of people who are doing good things, but there are generally just very few people. People leave Memphis, generally, as soon as they get a chance, you know?

Not clowning around

Spiral: Oh yeah, I love Suicide! The Screamers were a big influence on me, too.

They were kind of the west coast equivalent to Suicide.

Totally. Was all of that in your brain when you realized you could combine clowning and music?

Spiral: Yeah, I mean, I’ve always loved synth punk as long as I’ve been into it.

It kind of seemed like the clowny stepcousin of punk, because it wasn’t new wave or punk. It had its own little kids table [laughs]. I think Devo is a great example of that, where it was very much synth punk.

But also their aesthetic was bright colors, the plastic sort of toy thing.

ANYONE IN Savannah who doesn’t know Skippy Spiral has the perfect chance to get acquainted with performer when he plays a special show at the Sentient Bean on Fri., July 26.

Spiral’s musical identity is as important as his visual identity—the lifelong musician and artist marries his love of clowning and music, creating something that needs to be seen to be truly heard, and heard to be truly seen.

The music Spiral makes draws heavily from new wave, synth punk and goth punk music, and it’s all wrapped in the clown aesthetic that he’s become known for. His story is unique, and he’s become a great example of the musical diversity that Savannah has to offer.

The show at the Sentient Bean will feature Spiral, Pittsburgh-based clown Icky Vicky, and Indiana trip hop artist UaZit. We chatted with Spiral ahead of his Sentient Bean show about what to expect at the show and more.

I was really intrigued by the fact that your interest in clowning came from your grandfather. Tell me about the impact he had on you.

Spiral: Yeah, he was a big influence. One of my earliest memories was seeing him perform at our birthday parties. He did magic tricks, and I’d see my grandfather leave and this clown magically appear.

He’d leave, and then my grandfather would show up and be like, “Oh, I missed the clown!”

It was really rad and it really captured my imagination. And then getting older and 80s kid, I saw Killer Clowns From Outer Space and It. So there was the phobia that a lot of people have of clowns, but then it was [about] getting over it and embracing that, at the end of the day. I think that

Spiral: Exactly! The retrofuturism too, but also the puppet aesthetic.

Even bands like The Cramps had that sort of elevated aesthetic.

Spiral: Oh, absolutely. Oingo Boingo—you definitely hear me ripping off Danny Elfman on my album.

fear and imagination can kind of combine in different ways—they can be similar sensations sometimes. For creativity, I don’t mind freaking myself out [laughs].

Did that come before music, or were you getting into music at the same time?

Spiral: As far as my own style of music, I guess it came later. I really got into punk as a teenager, and was in some punk bands.

There was the bright colored hair and patches and pins—looking back on it, it is almost its own form of clowning. You don’t give a shit, and you’re just who you are. You’re not taking life too seriously [as a clown], which is a lot like punk rock and the energy behind it.

I think it definitely helped seeing somebody be as uninhibited as my grandfather, and then years later going to see my first punk shows; seeing GWAR and the theatrics of music. I was like, “Okay, this can go together.” I didn’t really realize that I could combine the two, though, until a little while later, and that’s when I took off with this persona.

I hear a lot of kind of goth punk and synth punk in your music. It actually made me think of Suicide, the 70s/80s duo from New York.

He’s maybe my favorite composer of all time, tied with [Mark] Mothersbaugh.

Spiral: Yeah, they’re both awesome!

And they both had these really cool new wave bands that helped them hone in on what they’d end up doing later on with composition.

You know, it’s hard looking back in terms of the whole chick or the egg thing for me.

It was kind of a culmination. I was a kid who loved to crack jokes; I’ve always loved to make people laugh. But there were two sides of me. There was also the really quiet kid who loved to draw and write.

I think a big factor in the last few years of me putting these two things together was just having my own project, complete creative control, and therefore my own identity in it.

What can people expect from the upcoming show?

Spiral: It’s going to be a lot of fun. I always love performing with other clowns! My friend Icky Vicky is coming down. It’s funny—I feel alone a lot of the time, and then I end up doing shows with other clowns and it’s like, “Oh, wow! I’m not alone anymore.” CS

RICHMOND, Virginia’s Sinister Purpose plays a heady mix of classic D.C. hardcore punk, 70s-influenced punk rock, D-beat hardcore, and pure riff rock. The band has released a number of EPs and singles over the past several years, showcasing their impressionable approach to songwriting and their commitment to the genre.

The band will be making a stop at El Rocko Lounge on Sat., July 27, and we spoke with members Marcus, Paul, Roger, and Steven ahead of the gig.

Tell me about how you guys got together. Is punk pretty much the background for all of you?

Steven: Yeah, I think we’ve all played in other bands in some genre of punk. I’d say we all listen to rock and roll. We definitely have a lot of Thin Lizzy and Motorhead influence in what we do, it just leans more towards the hardcore element.

Paul: I was definitely raised on the D.C. hardcore sound, and it’s always played a role in my writing. I’ve always loved classic rock, and the past few years I’ve really gotten more into that side of music. Just listening to riffs, really. At the end of the day it’s all about the riff for me.

How long have you guys known each other? How did this band get together?

Marcus: We got together as a band towards the end of 2015, but most of us have known each other going back about 10+ plus.

Steven: We all grew up right outside of

D.C., and were all in different bands but in the same scene.

Paul: Growing up, my best friend was close friends with Steven. So I’ve known Steven practically my whole life.

So everybody has known each other for a while, then. Does that make it easy to be in a band together?

Paul: It definitely made the starting phase of the band a lot more comfortable. There’s always that awkwardness of, like, what are we going for? What are we going to do and do we have anything to work on?

Steven: It was easy, too, because we weren’t in bands together before. We had no goals at the start other than to write some sweet tunes [laughs].

How long of a process was it, figuring out what you had and trying to land on something musically?

Paul: I do all of the writing, and what I like to do is figure out a riff, get a little recording, and throw it at the guys. Then I work it out to where I’ve got something that would pass as a complete song, and take it to practice. We make sure everyone’s got their say on their part, but I bring the skeleton to the table.

Roger: When we first started, Paul would have the song and it was very straightforward and we’d just kind of stuck to that.

But starting with Burn In Hell, we moved more into everyone contributing towards finalizing the song.

I’ve interviewed a few different Richmond bands, and it seems like there’s a pretty robust and eclectic music community. What’s your experience been like as part of the scene?

Paul: It’s been awesome. We’ve all been in different bands in different genres, and had a great time in Richmond. I could’ve stayed Paul: That probably happened when we up in D.C., personally, but Richmond music started working on the Burn In Hell EP. is just substantially better.

Originally, the idea was to be more of a Marcus: It seems especially over the last straight up D-beat hardcore punk band. It five years or so, there’s definitely been a just didn’t pan out, and this turned out to good amount of different scenes in Richbe more fun and interesting to write. After mond. It’s kind of segmented, but each Scorched Earth, our demo tape, we noticed scene has its different bands that are thrivthere was a rock and roll kind of feel. I was ing. There’s some mix between the scenes personally into it, and I feel like we got a lot a little bit, but there are always so many of positive feedback. It felt unique. new bands coming out of Richmond all the Steven: [Richmond-based record store] time. CS Vinyl Conflict was a big help, too. Because SINISTER PURPOSE @EL ROCKO they pressed Burn In Hell, and that made LOUNGE it all streamlined. We didn’t need a huge Sat., July 27, 9 P.M. investment to progress.

Now that you’ve landed on what y’all do, is the writing process pretty seamless?

Singer/songwriter celebrates release of first solo album

SINGER/SONGWRITER Jacob Evans is a relatively new name to the Savannah music scene as a solo artist, but he’s got the talent and the songs to become a mainstay. Evans is prepping the release of Just Breathe, his debut album, and celebrating it with a gig at Coastal Empire Beer Co. on Sat., July 27.

Evans got into music several years ago, taking cues early on from the late folk legend Richie Havens.

“He got me started playing guitar. I

was trying so hard to play his song, ‘Freedom,’ and then I found out that it was in a different tuning,” Evans tells Connect. “[Havens] was definitely the catalyst to diving into guitar. And then with singing, it was really John Legend.”

As he started exploring music, Evans began to discover an interest in writing songs. During the summer before his senior year of high school, he started to see

a more serious path towards writing and performing. College gave him the chance to start playing gigs, and he quickly began to find his sound.

“I would love to describe my music as alternative soul,” he says. The music he plays is an amalgamation of styles and influences that span genres and influences.

“The first music I ever listened to on my own was System Of A Down, My Chemical Romance, Panic! At The Disco, and then John Legend,” Evans explains. The eclectic nature of his music is reflected on Just Breathe, which features a collection of songs that are relatively acoustic-based but have the feel of a modern post-genre approach to songwriting.

“It was a long process,” he says of making the record. “I’ve had one of the songs since I was in high school. And I just started producing like two or three years ago.”

The process of recording was natural and intuitive for Evans, who says he’d often play whatever came to his head and wouldn’t adhere to any rules or standards when it came to production or even the lyrical content.

“I just played what I thought would be cool, and then would sculpt the song from there,” he says. “Lyrically, a lot of the songs I write about is stuff I have to get off of my chest. Most of the songs are about my problems, but sometimes I’ll write it like I’m talking to someone else.

If Just Breathe or the lead single “One More Lie” are any indication, Evans has a fruitful career ahead of him. The music is rhythmic, heartfelt, and accessible, and it’s seemingly just the beginning for him.

“This is going to be the first time that I’ve got a solid body of work to represent me,” he says with excitement. CS

The shoegaze and dream pop of Niights Ohio rockers come to The Jinx

You don’t lean too heavily into one influence or another—it’s a really delicate balance of stylistic approaches and aesthetic choices in terms of production. It’s also really varied musically.

Maraldo: Yeah. It’s hard for us to repeat ourselves, because we make a conscious effort not to do it.

That said, was this band one of those instances where you knew all along what it should be?

Fournier: When we started the band, I had a bunch of songs written that were in a bare bones, sort of singer/songwriter situation. Frank took those and added a bunch of guitar layers and stuff, and it grew from there. We started the band in 2010, so when we first started writing together it was a little bit of a different kind of collaboration because I joined with songs already written.

Now, we do write in a more collaborative way. But we’re not really going for anything other than kind of experimenting together. And we both pull from different backgrounds, so I think that’s why the music comes out sort of all over the place sometimes.

Maraldo: When I started, I had an idea of what I wanted it to sound like. But since then, we’ve been trying to push further and further to see what we’re really capable of doing. Back in 2010, the shoegaze revival was barely a thing—if it was a thing at all, at that point.

Side note, but I think the last Slowdive record might be the best “comeback” record ever.

Fournier: Yeah, it’s so beautiful.

That whole revival thing must make it a really good time to be doing what you guys are doing. But I also understand the desire as a band to experiment and not repeat yourselves. In what ways do y’all experiment and push boundaries?

Fournier: For me, it’s sometimes playing with new pedals. But really, it’s sitting down and writing something that’s maybe more formless and trying to create from that. Or maybe breaking away from a common structure go-to. I know that Frank challenges himself by learning different guitar styles. I never thought we’d ever shift into metal, but there’s a lot to learn from that and I think Frank has been incorporating that into his style.

Maraldo: I usually have a pretty formed structure in terms of what I want something to sound like. I don’t mean songwriting, per say, but sonically I have a pretty formed idea when I start with stuff. Obviously there’s lots of branches that go off of that, and that’s the fun of it. But in the studio, I know which way I want to go and which ways I don’t want to retread.

It’s a great question because it’s hard for me to think about that. But Jenna did bring to light something that I didn’t

even realize I do—I tend to try and learn a new chord or technique; something to move things along. I do tend to have a lot of things pre-written in my head, and then it’s a matter of getting it out through the instrument. Usually, my ideas are beyond my ability at first, which is what’s fun about music for me. Pushing the physical limitations of the band myself, basically.

Fournier: We were also a really fortunate band in that we worked with a producer who let us be ourselves, basically. He let us mess around and let us experiment in the studio. You don’t always have the time and money to do that, and he gave us a lot of extra time to experiment in the studio. That gives you a whole other world of possibilities.

That’s a real gift, I think. Especially when you’re just entering the studio realm, it’s hard to let your guard down with producers, and it’s not always the case where producers feel comfortable relinquishing some of that control.

Maraldo: It was definitely that way early on, but we spent a lot of time with Jim [Wirt, producer] in a way that was not recording. Doing a remix on the first record, and then when we started the record with him it was in piecemeal. So we’d already had our ins and outs with him at that point, and he’d become a friend. He came along and started realizing that this wasn’t another band where he had to play timekeeper. He knew when to say, “Let’s go down the rabbit hole a little bit.” CS

NIIGHTS IS a band that ticks every box for this lover of 80s and 90s dream pop and shoegaze. Upon first listen, it’s clear that they take plenty of cues from My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and more alternative rock bands like Smashing Pumpkins. If you listen further, though, you’ll notice that they even explore heavier avenues and dip their collective toe into the vast pool of metal and its riff-centric explosiveness.

All of this comes together to create something that makes Niights stand out.

The band clearly isn’t keen on just being a copy of their influences, but rather uses those influences as the blueprint for something sonically and compositionally unique. They’ve succeeded in that over the past several years, and most notably on their latest release Hellebores.

Niights is currently on a tour that brings them to The Jinx on Fri., July 26, alongside Tape Waves and local favorites Nancy Druid. We spoke to guitarists and vocalists Frankie Maraldo and Jenna Fournier ahead of the gig.

MULTIDISCIPLINARY artist Jimmy Butcher is always creating something.

A tattoo artist for 15 years, Butcher owns and tattoos at The Butcher Tattoo Studio and Art Gallery downtown. He’s also a talented painter and illustrator, and he was recently tapped to paint a mural at the Starland Yard.

We spoke with Butcher last week.

From tattooing to painting, drawing to product design, Butcher does it all and then some.

Do you feel like your style has changed in that time?

Tell me about how The Butcher got started.

The Butcher started in 2011. When we opened this space, it was me and my mentor at the time. About a year and a half in, he wanted to do things differently, so he split. It was tough because I was tattooing as much as I could possibly physically tattoo, and still trying to do conventions and gallery shows to supplement everything I couldn’t handle with tattooing.

It’s funny, I was always reluctant to use my name. I talked to a small business coach who said, “Don’t ever name your business after yourself,” because it makes it about you, and when you’re creating a customer service business, you want it to be about everyone else. I thought that I agreed with her, but throughout my career, I never was really able to escape the name, even when I tried. I’d say, “Nah, don’t call me that,” when I was first starting as a tattooer. People thought it was a nickname— that’s a bad nickname for a beginning tattooer!

I thought if I embraced it and I curated the vibe of the shop in a way that was kind of the opposite of what you’d expect from something called The Butcher, it’d be awesome. And then I worked really hard to make sure it wasn’t about me.

I always tell people, “As an artist, the worst thing that can happen to you is you have your artwork on a gallery wall and nothing gets said.” And no one walks past the shop without something to say. There’s just much bad as there is good, but I take it the same way.

2. What’s your artistic background,

and how did you get started tattooing?

I do everything, and it’s really important for me to talk about the art. I graduated from college with a bachelor’s in painting with a concentration in graphic design.

I always wanted to do streetwear. I’m an MTV kid, so when I was growing up, I was like, “Man, I want to see my designs on the clothes those guys wear.”

I moved to Savannah on a whim. I didn’t really have any plans other than to just leave the town I was in, which was Charleston, West Virginia. The type of thing I wanted to do just wasn’t there. I didn’t know if it was here, either, but I took a chance on it.

I worked at Tony Roma’s, which is now Tondee’s Tavern, and I was hanging out at the tattoo shop that was right next door—it was called Alien Arts. I would just get off work and go there. I wasn’t getting tattoos, I wasn’t really into tattoos. Months went by, and after not doing anything creative, I asked for an apprenticeship. The guy said, “Yeah, you can have an apprenticeship if you can give me five full sketchbooks of artwork that I find impressive.” I had eight sketchbooks on me when he said that, so I showed him, and he liked it. So that was 15 years ago.

My style changes several times a year. It’s good and it’s bad, because I’ll change my style and then have a customer come back from years prior—sometimes even six months prior—and they want something I’m not doing anymore.

I’m inspired by music and fashion, just like popular art I look at. I don’t really look at tattoos. I’ve never done that, and I’ve worked really hard to make sure I don’t do that.

I acknowledge this, and I think that anyone that works creatively could do this, too—I know that I’m heavily influenced by a lot of stuff that I really like. But I don’t use it when I know I’m being influenced by it. If I sit down and want to paint, and I want to create something in the vein of this thing that I saw, I try to draw it from memory. If I do that and I think about all my favorite paintings I’ve seen over the past six months, and I try to channel that into my painting, it’s mine. It doesn’t look like I’m copying anyone or ripping anyone off. I find that’s the truest way to do something new.

All things hip-hop culture are heavily influential in everything I do, and what’s really cool is that’s really popular right now. My childhood was really popular. I’ve been drawing Bart Simpson since I was a kid, and now that I’m doing it, people are like, “Wow, that’s so popular and cool.”

4. What were your influences for this mural?

I started this process a few years back, where I wanted to get really loose and

gestural. I was using brush pens a lot and mentoring under a Japanese artist that lives up in Vancouver. I was doing these really loose, gestural flowers and organic things and it became a go-to for me, keeping in mind the graffiti influence of growing up and never having done graffiti.

I wanted to make the mural really big, do something kind of non-representational, a little more abstract for a space that big. I didn’t want to get specific or hone in on any theme. I just wanted it to be energetic.

5. What’s up next for you?

I’m making a softer transition into a more artistic career. It doesn’t mean I’m not going to be tattooing at all, but it means I’ll be tattooing less to focus on other creative stuff I want to do. This mural and other stuff I’m planning is definitely part of trying to make a splash with that.

It’s always felt a little bit to me like I’m trying to convince everybody who knows I’m a tattoo artist that I’m a lot more than that. Not that it isn’t something impressive, but I always put it like this. If you were a graphic designer and you said, “I want to tattoo,” most of the people around you would be like, “That’s a great idea.” A lot of times, when a tattoo artist says, “You know what, I think I want to design clothes,” they’re like, “Nah, man, you’re a tattoo artist.” It’s this weird double standard that I’ve never liked and never felt comfortable with. I think I’ve done a good job with the shop and my reputation and pushing that as hard as possible, but what’s next for me is pushing even harder into the realm of actually putting some of these products out and more art where people can see it and more gallery shows and things like that.

Recently someone said to me, “So I see you’re doing this mural. Why are you doing this? That’s so different than tattooing.” I fight the urge to get upset; I’ve reached out to people like, “How do I calmly answer this question?” It just comes back to the fact that I’ve always been an artist. Art is my first love. Tattooing has been my career for 15 years, but it doesn’t define me as an artist. CS

FOR HER final show in Savannah, Heather MacRae decided to try something a little different.

The veteran of the art scene is typically a landscape painter, but for the source material for “pedal,” opening Tuesday at Sulfur Studios, she had to go into the metaphorical back room.

“I was thinking about public and private and consent and buildings, and this concept of internal vs. external,” explains MacRae. “I started thinking about places we can go, and the body as permission and consent, and this idea of permission of entry into a body. That’s where this conversation started to become more erotic, and that’s where the source material came from.”

To explore the body and its entry points, MacRae began buying porn magazines— she admits she’s probably the only one who does anymore—and drawing what she saw.

“These are women who embrace this lifestyle and this public presentation of what we’d consider a more private practice,” says MacRae. “When you’re looking at these images extensively, you start to contextualize the body, and that’s when I became more interested in this idea of how females are portrayed as sexual objects, but they’re always so innocent and demure.”

The female porn star has long been a point of contention depending on which wave of feminism you ride, but MacRae sees it as empowerment.

“I’ve done a lot of reading about how feminists have put down porn for so long, but are starting to realize that women who want to take control of their sexuality and say, ‘Yeah, this turns me on, I like this,’ and don’t allow a straight male gaze to control what they appear as,” explains MacRae. “There’s more of a dominant female presence and a claiming of their own sexuality. It plays into that concept of power and I think that’s where porn can be really interesting, because there’s a shift in the sense of power when women feel like

they can take control of their own sexuality.”

In “pedal,” the figures are all in control, strong and fearless. They’re also all without faces.

“That’s consent,” she says. “I was really focused on line and the body, and also the expression of the female body actively engaged, and I really feel like it all goes back to body as structure and consent.”

Perhaps one of the reasons porn is still seen as so damaging is because of consent.

“I think a lot of people see porn as damaging or adverse, but that in turn creates a society where we repress or pusdh down any human feelings we have surrounding sexuality. This can lead to a lot of trauma,” she muses.

MacRae admits she was nervous to show this series because some of the work expresses the human body in ways that can be misconstrued as graphic or vulgar.

“My intent is to explore the body as an expression of these ideas of access, permission and public and private consent.

However, I’m trying to embrace the Billy Porter quote about, ‘It’s not my business what someone else things of me.’ But I don’t know what it is about our culture that there’s that very Western idea of Protestant modesty. How do we advance from that?”

One way, obviously, is to hold more shows like “pedal.”

The paintings in this show, done in acrylic paint on wood panel, use floral fabric patterns as a backdrop for the figures to comment on domesticity.

“There’s no reason to doll up the bodies, because they’re all very feminine and strong in their own way anyway,” says MacRae, “but it felt like they had that space for that and that weird plastic feeling of domestic intimacy on a public surface. It’s all about internal vs. external, public and what happens at home—how these relationships or what we do at home dictates how we are out in the world and what we bring out into the world.”

MacRae will also exhibit her “build” series, which she first exhibited in South Carolina.

“I’m obsessed with nun and verb.

They’re all verbs and nouns, so it’s an object and it’s an action,” she says.

“I also feel like that relates to the body as well, so the object and the body in motion. I used the word ‘pedal’ because it’s both the object that is stepped on to create motion, but it is also the motion of changing things.

It’s the concept of, ‘Here’s this platform we’re standing on to change things or create motion or progress.’”

“Pedal” might create some of that progress, but MacRae won’t be a Savannah resident to see it.

“I’ll be back,” she promises, “but it’s like drop the mic and walk away. I’m literally leaving the next day. Our van is going to be packed for this show.”

MacRae has been in Savannah for ten years, where she was a major part of Art Rise Savannah and director of Non-Fiction Gallery. In my opinion, that makes her perspective on the changes in Savannah’s art scene, and in general, an important one.

I worked alongside MacRae at Art Rise Savannah for a few years and learned a lot from her perspective.

We both came here in 2011 and met a few years later, when the art scene felt very different than it does now.

“I kind of miss back when. 2013 is when it felt like so much was going on,” she remembers. “I know there is still a lot going on. Maybe I’m just too busy to go be at it.”

Still, the changes have been pretty noticeable for MacRae. “Savannah has definitely changed a lot since I’ve been here, a ridiculous amount,” she says. “I remember when Foxy opened their doors. It was as if the whole neighborhood changed overnight. I lived on Bull and 37th.”

As happens in Savannah, our conversation drifted to the gentrification of the Starland District without ever actually saying the word.

“That’s the crazy experience of watching things—all these intense conversations about how that may or may not be damaging,” she says. “It damages the people who have lived here and grown up here being able to live or pay their property taxes.”

MacRae is moving to Decatur, Ga., so she’s not too far to come back and visit, but she might be coming back to a different Savannah than she knows.

“You know the Keep Austin Weird thing? I want Savannah to be kind of weird still,” she says, “but I understand that once they put that direct flight in from New York to Savannah, that kind of cracked open an artery. There are some places I’m like, ‘Wow, is this Charleston? This is not the city I thought.’ Nobody wants it to turn into Charleston, but there are definitely some places you can’t tell the difference.

Keitaro Harada set to take the baton at Savannah Philharmonic New Music and Artistic Director named after extensive search

THE renowned conductor Keitaro Harada will join the Savannah Philharmonic as its Music and Artistic Director in the 2020-21 season, the Philharmonic has announced.

Harada will conduct the 2019-20 seasons’ opening and closing concerts, “while working with an impressive roster of guest conductors and soloists to connect the local audience with the evolving orchestral world,” the Philharmonic says in a statement.

“Harada’s multi-year commitment to The Phil guarantees that the Coastal Empire will be the creative home to one of the most sought-after, ascending conductors in orchestral music,” says a spokesperson.

The 34-year-old Harada will fill the shoes of Peter Shannon, who served in the same role with the Phil for a decade.

Originally from Tokyo, Japan, Harada recently wrapped up his fourth season as Associate Conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Cincinnati Pops.

Harada has recent and upcoming engagements with ensembles such as Houston Symphony, NHK Symphony, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony, Fort Worth Symphony, Sofia National Opera & Ballet, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, and New Japan Philharmonic.

“Harada’s artistic vision and ebullient personality make him the perfect fit as the next Music and Artistic Director for Savannah Philharmonic,” says Board Chair Rhegan White-Clemm.

His repertoire and performance experience spans genres, including classical symphonic music, chamber works, opera, pops, ballet, film scores, educational and outreach programming.

“Harada places high personal value on the advancement of each musician and ensemble he encounters. He conducted the Savannah Philharmonic and Savannah Music Festival’s co-production of ‘Rhapsody in Blue and the Firebird Suite,’ during which he dazzled the audience and orchestra alike with his talent and passion for excellence throughout each movement,” White-Clemm says.

Harada is a three-time recipient of the Solti Foundation U.S. Career Assistance Award, has been featured at the Bruno Walter National Conductor Preview, won the Seiji Ozawa Conducting Fellowship at Tanglewood Music Festival, and studied

with Lorin Maazel and Fabio Luisi at the Castleton and Pacific Musical Festivals, respectively. Valery Gergiev invited him to join the Pacific Music Festival faculty.

“From the moment I started making music with the musicians, I felt an immediate connection. There was passion and excitement from the rehearsals which translated into a beautiful storytelling at the performance,” Harada says.

“The energy on stage and from the audience is something I will never forget. My professional career started 14 years ago in Georgia, my home away from home.

I couldn’t be more excited that fate has brought me back to Georgia and I feel so honored to join the Savannah Philharmonic family.” he says.

The Philharmonic’s music director search committee, led by board vice chairman, Scott Lauretti, brought together prominent musicians from the orchestra, community advocates, active philanthropists, and leaders from the area’s arts and cultural organizations.

Reports from the Philharmonic are that in interviews, “Harada impressed committee members and audiences with his vision, enthusiasm, work ethic, professionalism, magnetism and formidable experience.”

“Keitaro Harada is special,” Lauretti says. “He is talented, thoughtful, inspirational and committed.

He has demonstrated personal and professional integrity since the first day we met, and we are proud and grateful that he is genuinely excited to join our team. With Kei at the podium and out in the community representing the power of music as a galvanizing force, we are in great shape.”

Harada is married to Yuri Kurashima, who owns Lady Nishida, a women’s fashion line. For seven years, Kurashima played professional tennis on the International Tennis Federation circuit. She has served as an assistant tennis coach at Harvard University.

Harada says he has developed affection for Georgia during his stint as a student at Mercer University and Assistant Conductor of the Macon Symphony Orchestra. CS

Yaupon Tea House & Apothecary helps revive Native American tradition

Yaupon was historically used as a ceremonial and recreational brew by local Native Americans.

EVERY SAVANNAHIAN has had his or her fair share of sweet tea. However, long before the sugary cups of brown “Savannah Water” were served alongside deep fried seafood treats, the natives of our area enjoyed the taste and healing properties of yaupon—a leafy plant that has been brewed for a very long time.

Luckily, Savannah has two visionaries bringing back the use of the ancient plant.

Owners Lou Thomann and Lori Judge are true pioneers in the world of Savannah’s native yaupon holly. What started with a dream has now turned into Yaupon Tea House & Apothecary.

I was lucky enough to sit down with the pair and enjoy Yaupon Tea House & Apothecary’s ceremonial brew exactly as the Native Americans once did.

“Different tribes would share the tea, and it would create a bond. When Oglethorpe came to Savannah, Tomochichi gave Oglethorpe a cup of this tea,” Judge told me.

As we shared the light, earthy, warm tea, Thomann, who could be considered a selftaught expert on the subject, educated me on the history of yaupon.

On a getaway to Ossabaw Island with the owners of Service Brewery, the two were introduced to the yaupon plant by John “Crawfish” Crawford who, according to Thomann, is one of the most knowledgeable naturalists in the coastal area.

After hand picking and brewing fresh tea over their campfire, Thomann instantly fell in love with the tea and its history.

Lori Judge and Lou Thomann say that studying the history of yaupon “opened up this whole world.”

Thomann returned home and immediately began researching the native holly.

“It opened up this whole world; I realized that this is a huge treasure. This was the most sacred plant in North America amongst indigenous people for thousands of years, and nobody knows anything about it. We started making little tea bags, hand picking it, giving it to people, going to charity events serving it,” explained Thomann.

He started small by harvesting the native plant and distributing it in different forms—tea bags, bottled tea, and more.

I’m sure that most locals are very well acquainted with his tea company and its products, ASI Tea Company, even if they may not know it.

The next phase of growth for Thomann occurred with implementation of two yaupon farms, one in Metter, Ga., and one in Florida.

“We have ten thousand plants that we planted. We are doing it in row crops to see if they can be grown that way because right now it is just grown in the wild,” Judge says.

Thomann elaborates: “The farm in Metter is the research farm. The entire farm is not growing yaupon. We are growing probably about fifteen acres. We first started harvesting yaupon on Heard Island, which is a little barrier island off of Darien, and we propagated,” he says.

“We were genetically selective with which plants looked good and healthy. We propagated them, and we planted about ten to twelve thousand of those plants on the farm in a row crop. No one has ever done that before.”

As America’s only indigenous source of natural caffeine, the yaupon plant has magical properties. Beyond caffeine, the plant contains theobromine, an alkaloid of

the cacao plant.

Together the two natural stimulates give drinkers a slight boost while imparting many believed health benefits such as better digestion, lower blood pressure, and immune-boosting properties.

Thomann‘s goal is to further explore the many benefits of the tea.

“We were just awarded a phase two USDA small business innovation research grant, which is to study the feasibility of yaupon for food,” he tells me.

They are pushing even more by reaching for a National Institute of Health grant, which will catapult the duo and their local farm to work towards clinical trials, the purpose being to document the true health benefits of the magical plant.

The most recent, but not final, phase of expansion for the two is their official storefront, which opened April of this year.

Sitting inside beneath a large open sunlight that fills the space with warmth is a tall busy yaupon tree that the two brought from their farm.

While Thomann is the yaupon master, Judge has begun to study up on herbalism. The Teahouse has brought the two together, through its mission to recreate traditional uses of yaupon and share natural yaupon products with local Savannah.

Tourists and locals can stop in and enjoy their ceremonial tea—just like I did. The brew is served in a handmade replica of Cahokia civilization’s ceremonial cup.

As the in-house expert on the subject, Thomann tells me the story.

“It was one of the largest settlements of Native Americans in the 1700s or 1800s; it was a bigger city than London, as a comparison. In that village they found earthenware similar to this with yaupon and cocoa residue in the cup that was tested.

They found it in thousand year old cups.”

Again, honoring the native traditions of yaupon, Yaupon Tea House serves Cocoa Yaupon Tea. If you feel it is just too warm to drink your tea hot, iced is the modified classic southern version. Yaupon Tea House sells house blended functional teas to take home and brew yourself.

THE LION KING

OO (2 out of four) All filmmakers would find it a compliment to have their latest picture compared to Alfred Hitchcock’s excellent Psycho. Yet none would care to have their new movie compared to Gus Van Sant’s execrable Psycho.

Yet as The Lion King, Version 2.0, gets underway, memories of Van Sant’s failed experiment come flooding back. The entire opening sequence of the animals gathering at Pride Rock while “The Circle of Life” plays over the speakers is exactly the same in this CGI version as it was in the original 1994 old-school-animated feature.

Every shot, every angle, every blade of grass remains the same, and two hours of mimicry would make for a very long movie indeed.

But just as Van Sant eventually departed ever-so-slightly from the original material, so too do director Jon Favreau and scripter Jeff Nathanson. Yet even with minor modifications, this Lion King can never quite step out of the shadow of its predecessor, and many will write it off as merely selfabsorbed and self-congratulatory.

All of the enduring characters have returned in photorealistic form, including the majestic Mufasa, his restless son Simba, and his conniving brother Scar. As before, a tragedy sends Simba scampering away from his home turf, on the precipice of perishing until he’s rescued by the garrulous team of the meerkat Timon and the warthog Pumbaa. The Lion King remains a story of oversized Shakespearean actions, ambitions and emotions, channeling Hamlet as it looks at familial relationships and reserving its most potent bits for the father-son dynamics.

Here’s the tricky part about covering this new take on The Lion King. If you’ve seen the original, it’s impossible not to compare and contrast, and this version falls short in practically every way. Those who have never seen the ’94 edition will doubtless be much more charitable in their assessment, although even they might be put off by the soullessness of the entire enterprise. The Lion King 2.0 feels like nothing more than a cash grab, and, yes, of course making money is the bottom line.

But Disney’s pilfering of its past usually arrives with some artistry and imagination attached — check out 2015’s Cinderella as Exhibit A and 2017’s Beauty and the Beast as Exhibit B. The Lion King, on the other hand, feels like it was produced on a dare, or maybe because the Disney suits were feeling particularly arrogant. It brings to mind Jeff Goldblum’s line in Jurassic Park: “[They] were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.”

The photorealism of the project is perfect, but that’s part of the problem.

expression as cartoons, so everyone here is delivering their lines behind a barrier of inertia. Simba’s face basically remains the same whether he’s chasing butterflies or getting trampled by wildebeest — he’s the Jean-Claude Van Damme of CGI animals.

Meanwhile, Timon remains a great character, but I haven’t seen eyes this lifeless and devoid of expression since Tom Hanks tried to get everyone to climb aboard his Polar Express.

Speaking of Timon, Nathan Lane’s voice work in the original was one of that picture’s highlights — ditto James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Ernie Sabella as Pumbaa, and especially Jeremy Irons as Scar. Jones has been brought back to active duty to reprise his turn as Mufasa — if only they had brought <I>everyone<P> back. There are plenty of fine actors involved with this picture, but few make much of an impression, including Donald Glover as Simba, Beyonce as Nala, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar. Only Seth Rogen as Pumbaa and, to a lesser extent, Billy Eichner as Timon come close to making the roles their own, even if they’re stripped of some of their characters’ best material. For instance, I missed Timon’s reaction to the near-lifeless body of Simba as well as his snort of “What mook?” in the star-gazing sequence.

Then again, I expect plenty of nostalgic longing will greet viewings of The Lion King. When audience emotion does get elevated, it’s as likely to have emanated from fond memories of the original than anything actually occurring on screen.

That was certainly my experience in select scenes, as, analyzing my thought process in the moment, I realized I was reacting to cherished images in my mind’s eye rather

than to the stiff, stuffed animals sauntering across the auditorium. So if you want to plunk down $10 or $12 to basically lower your eyelids and watch the movie screen in your head, be my guest.

STUBER

OO Just because the 1980s ended long ago doesn’t mean we’re not still entitled to receive quality “buddy” flicks.

While that decade saw these types of films — generally action-comedies where at least one of the twofer was a cop — breed like rabbits, recent times have tended to put the brakes on such endeavors, resulting in a steady trickle rather than a downpour. Some have been decent, like The Good Guys (Gosling-Crowe) and Central Intelligence (Johnson-Hart). Some have been mediocre, like Stuber. With apologies to Foghat, this latest effort is a slow ride; perhaps Stupor would have been a better title.

In fact, Stuber smells like a project born solely from its moniker, with some wise guy thinking, “Wouldn’t it be funny to combine the name Stu with the notion of an Uber and come up with Stuber?” Presumably, that would be Tripper Clancy, who receives sole blame — excuse me, sole credit — for the screenplay.

Kumail Nanjiani plays Stu, a mousy Uber driver who lives in constant fear that his customer rating will slip below 4.0 (on a 5.0 scale). His latest pickup is Vic Manning (Dave Bautista), a detective on the trail of the drug kingpin (The Raid star Iko Uwais, criminally wasted) who killed his partner (Karen Gillan, checking out after

the opening scene). The reason a cop would need to be chauffeured by an Uber driver?

Because Vic has just been subjected to corrective eye surgery and is basically Mr. Magoo for at least a few more hours. Vic (who calls Stu “Steve” throughout) and Stu (who tags Vic as “Douche Lundgren”) bicker constantly, only breaking on occasion to gun down a few sneering perps.

Nanjiani occasionally gets off a funny aside, but for the most part, the comedy proves to be as anemic as the action. Marvel completists might want to check out the Guardians of the Galaxy reunion between Drax the Destroyer (Bautista) and Nebula (Gillan) in the opening moments, and those who’ve long wondered whatever happened to Mira Sorvino after the 1990s will breathe a sigh of relief when she turns up here as Vic’s boss at the precinct. Otherwise, there’s not much tread on yet another assembly-line mediocrity.

It’s Pelle who suggests that his buddies accompany him back to his small Swedish hometown to witness a festival that occurs only once every 90 years. Christian invites Dani to come with them, never dreaming she would actually accept the offer. But she does, meaning that she and the lads are soon off to a rural area in the province of Halsingland. Upon arrival, everything seems pleasant enough, as the locals engage in benign pagan rituals centered around flowers, dances, and dinners. But matters take a dark turn once the attestupa (Google at your own Spoiler risk) hits the fan, and from there, it’s pretty much doom and gloom for some of the unsuspecting visitors.

Like Hereditary, Midsommar is a thematically rich picture, with more taking place than initially meets the eye. There’s real sport in noting all the artwork that covers the village and realizing that many of the depictions will be played out later in the film, and characters who are initially seen only fleetingly soon grow in prominence as the story unfolds.

Unfortunately, whereas Hereditary stubbed its toe during a hurried and harried finale, one in which Toni Collette’s character of Annie Graham was demoted from fascinating heroine to expendable extra, Midsommar likewise takes a few missteps as it heads toward its denouement. The obliviousness of the outsiders eventually becomes as risible as those of the eventual victims found in Friday the 13th-style slasher flicks, and, even given Dani’s trauma, the specifics of the narrative make it hard to swallow certain aspects of her character arc. Like Collette’s Annie, she becomes the sideshow rather than the main attraction, and while it’s not as incongruous here as in Hereditary, it still results in the film losing its center.

Still, Midsommar succeeds in its utmost desire to disturb. If nothing else, it’s the perfect counterprogramming selection for those who don’t mind interrupting their sunny summer with a feel-bad bummer.

OOP After all the heavy lifting they collectively had to perform in Avengers: Endgame, it’s only fair that Earth’s mightiest heroes be given some time off to relax and recuperate. That applies in spades to Peter Parker (Tom Holland), since he’s a teenager and technically should be spared from having to worry about anything beyond girls and grades. But as Spider-Man: Far from Home makes abundantly clear right from the start, Peter’s problems are really just beginning.

Following “The Blip” (aka “The Snap” aka See Avengers: Endgame) and its fiveyears-later ramifications, everyone is still trying to put their lives back together. That includes Peter, still reeling from the loss of his friend and mentor, Tony Stark. Working through his sorrow, Peter prefers to focus on spending time with his best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon) and getting up the nerve to ask MJ (Zendaya) to be his girlfriend. (Side note: It’s lucky for Peter that his friends also disappeared during “The Blip,” since it would otherwise be awkward for college-age kids Ned and MJ to have this high school squirt constantly pestering them.) Peter figures he’ll have ample time to hang out with both during his class’s upcoming European field trip, but the (Marvel) universe has other plans for our friendly neighborhood webslinger.

Before he even leaves the U.S., there are those pestering calls from Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), who wants Peter to step up in his role as a superhero. And once he hits Europe, there are the Elementals, interdimensional beings that employ nature to batter our planet. In Venice, that would be the Water Elemental, and while Peter is caught somewhat flatfooted by the creature, another dynamic figure, Quentin Beck/Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal), is on hand to save the day. Peter and Quentin hit it off immediately, and Peter sees in the older man not only a mentor like Tony Stark but possibly a new hero as potentially iconic and influential as Iron Man. Following 2017’s impressive SpiderMan: Homecoming, which provided Holland’s hero with his first solo starring vehicle, Spider-Man: Far from Home ends up in the so-close-and-yet-so-far category. The first half is mostly terrific, thanks to the immense charms of Holland and his youthful co-stars as well as their characters’ various shenanigans. Indeed, this portion of the film succeeds as a high school comedy first and a superhero saga second.

A villain eventually comes into focus in the second half, and it’s here where the film takes a tumble. His nefarious scheme is cut from the same megalomaniacal cloth donned by most evildoers, yet the specifics sound puny and borderline risible. CS
