THE RECENT decision by Savannah City Council to demolish the Civic Center and the Johnny Mercer Theatre was met with loud outcry – though it had actually been discussed over the coursed of many months.

Many observers are arguing that the Johnny Mercer Theatre must be saved, and that demolishing it would eliminate an important venue with no clear substitute waiting in the wings—so to speak.

To get to the bottom of the issues surrounding the Johnny Mercer Theatre (JMT), I asked local sound engineer Michael Gaster if he’d be kind enough to go on the record with his professional opinion. With over 28 years experience in the

Technical director of this facility (19961998) I was constantly amazed at how many Front of House (FOH) “engineers” were coming through the building with major tours working for the artist and not the touring sound company, who had very little experience beyond pushing faders for their friends. However, the shows that are in and out of this space and the people who are operating for even one-off events aren’t having bad sounding shows night after night in every room they go in!

This signals that what we have is a space that requires people to have to put on their thinking caps before they push the first box out on to this stage, and hopefully they realize the need to re-think things before they get everything all set up and the doors are open to the audience.

If you had the same footprint and capacity as the JMT, but a clean slate and limitless budget, how would you

with a different color scheme and better loading dock.

In that vein, what are the “cardinal sins” of the original design—those things which are unfixable no matter how much money you spend?

The Apron (the part of the stage that extends beyond the curtain line) is about 20’ deeper than it should be for a performance theatre. For symphonies, great, put the performers in the space with the audience. Anything meant to be looked at from a “framed” perspective and creatively lit, is compromised by this stage mass. Performers are practically across the street from the audience, and if you move performers downstage (closer to the audience) there isn’t much you can do with the light show.

To an audio professional...coming into this space, or any makeshift multipurpose theatre with hybrid acoustics, it often means having to re-think how you deploy your system(s)... field, he operates Michael Gaster + Associates, a technical systems company specializing in live events and the performing arts.

Here is my interview with Gaster: Most laypeople can easily identify the “poor acoustics” of the JMT, but what does that really mean to a professional?

To an audio professional (a systems engineer or a mixing engineer—often one and the same) coming into this space, or any makeshift multipurpose theatre with hybrid acoustics, it often means having to re-think how you deploy your system(s) as well as how you are mixing the content of your show. “How do I maximize the impact of this concert and minimize the garbage that this could turn into?” is the question audio people have to ask when coming into this room.

Getting around hybrid acoustic spaces requires the “engineer,” using that term loosely here, to know more than the one way to deploy their system as well as to know how to adapt their approach to their mix.

When I was Production Manager/

design the space for ideal sound/sightlines etc?

The first thing is we would make it clear that this is going to be one type of space, not two! This is where the previously used term “hybrid acoustics” comes in.

You can have a Concert Hall (symphonies) or a Performance Theatre (amplified concerts and theatrical events), but trying to put the two in the same space gets you the Johnny Mercer Theatre. It’s lame for symphonies and sucks for anything meant to be loud.

Although, I will say the Gaillard in Charleston managed to do the best job I have seen of making the two (Concert Hall/Performance Theatre) into one. I suppose with the Gaillard, which I have done several (amplified) shows in with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, that’s where your “limitless budget” comes in as that was essentially the case with that facility.

In its construction phase I was fortunate to have toured the Gaillard a few times, and did some minor consulting with their DOO so I know a bit about that facility. So, to simply answer your question, I would “cut and paste” the Gaillard, but

amplified or meant to be seen in a framed perspective. It is nearly impossible to mask the back stage from people sitting on the out sides of the audience, and sound-wise if you’re seated in the Left or Right Sections you get half the experience—those tickets should be half off.

The Ceiling: This is where it sucks for symphonies. Those coffin-like acoustic clouds do something, but not near enough for the un-amplified. They mostly just look stupid, it needs to be open joist or solid.

The Proscenium (the stage opening that separates backstage from the audience): Although there’s nothing wrong with the actual opening at JMT, it should not just blend right in to the audience side walls. There needs to be some audience side “wing” space to provide space for various technical aspects.

The Loading Dock: This has been a mess and re-worked so many times since this building was built and it still sucks.

It just needed to have been a thought by someone who was designing the space.

The Mechanical is so friggin’ loud, and there is no moving it.

for my baby. Birth isn’t always the glamorized heart-warming picture of a mom holding the baby on her chest. It’s dangerous and extremely traumatic for some women.

I’ve had people say to my face that they would never have been able to do that, question my reasons for fetal surgery, all sorts of things.

I’ve also had people thank me for keeping him “even though he’s a cripple.”

The comments I’ve had to endure have taught me a lot in patience and using my voice to advocate for my son. It’s also helped me not to take things personally.

I had someone once say they would’ve had an abortion. And ya know what, I completely supported her opinion.

Because it has nothing to do with Declan or his value as a person—it has everything to do with that person knowing what they can and cannot potentially handle. And I would never want that option taken away from her.

I have spent nights crying about his disability—worrying, screaming, planning, longing. Keeping Declan was the right choice for me. And considering I made a risky decision, it made me even more pro-choice than before.

It’s not glamorous and although other people have had babies with far worse

medical conditions and the baby did not survive, no woman should ever have to go through that if not prepared. I’ve heard the NICU alarm of babies dying, I’ve seen families surround the crib as their baby took its last breath.

And then there are some children who have quality of life and are doing beautifully. Again, it needs to be a choice, as there is no guarantee.

Childbirth and children are not props and are certainly not storylines. Society celebrates the children who survived against all of the odds and we forget the children who maybe made it through five breaths before dying in the arms of a mother who just endured the pain and exhaustion of childbirth.

No family should ever be faced with childbirth costs on top of funeral costs.

That woman will also be asked to turn her trauma inward and cope in everyday life with children who are alive while being made to post a trigger warning about her own story.

And yes, there is always adoption. It’s extremely expensive to adopt a child. But, perfect choice for some women.

However, women are not incubators. It’s that simple. I also do not know one single pro-life friend on that adoption list waiting for a child. Why aren’t they adopting?

Because of finances? Maybe they don’t like being told how to live their life.

If I ever were to become pregnant again, I could possibly lose the baby because of the cuts on my uterus. Again, I’ve had the resources of getting scans and miraculously my body healed very well when I was told it wouldn’t.

I’ve had every resource to get proper medical care. I was never happy with Declan’s physical or speech therapist and am beyond lucky I can drive four hours every week to have his back “released” and to help him become more mobile.

Learning music has helped him far better than speech therapy ever did to help him learn how to speak. He is so fortunate he goes to a school that has adapted the classroom for him.

He has friends, he is loved, he has opportunities. That is his life, his experience, based on the series of choices I’ve made for him and for myself.

As a doctor once told me, ‘There are some things worse than death,” and just because you are privy to his highlights doesn’t mean that there hasn’t been some downright ugly unseen footage.

This is an extreme example because of his disability but if I didn’t have the resources I did or the education, all of this could possibly look very different.

Mental health treatment is a joke in this country, and there is a very good chance I wouldn’t have made it if I didn’t have my options or resources.

Pro-choice doesn’t mean anti-life. It doesn’t mean pro-abortion. Actually, most of the pro-choice people I’ve ever met have a deep understanding of life and fight for the rights of those living. Mostly pro-life at this point is pro-birth with no regard for the child after it enters this world. Or support for the woman.

In the end, if I had chosen to abort Declan, my life would look completely different. I have never had an abortion but know women who have.

I worked in a rape crisis center and helped as best as I could with women who became pregnant. That shaped my life.

So did growing up with a mother who frequently told me I should’ve been an abortion.

Again, I have had the resources to process the trauma in my life. But I am here and I am loved and I am a damaged person doing my best in this glorious life that I may not have known.

I’m glad my mother made a choice. And I’m glad Declan will grow up knowing he was a choice out of love and not out of guilt, shame and forced accountability. CS

Lysistrata reading benefits ACLU and Planned Parenthood

A STAGED READING of the Greek comedy Lysistrata will take place Sat., July 6 at Club One. The reading is put on by the Lysistrata Project, headed up by casting director Chad Darnell, which he started as a response to HB 481.

“What’s funny is, I came up with the idea to do this staged reading,” Darnell remembers, “and I reached out to Alyssa Milano and the very next day is when she announced her hashtag Sex Strike. I’m not saying she stole my idea, I’m just saying it’s very interesting timing!”

The premise of Lysistrata is simple: women stop having sex with men until their demands are met. Lysistrata is tired of the Peloponnesian War and tries an unconventional tack to end the war.

“She comes up with a plan basically gathering all the women together to say, ‘Look, we can do this. We have power,’” says Haviland Stillwell, star of the play.

“Yes, the story is really funny and silly, but at the heart of the matter, she does what all good leaders do, which is to tell disenfranchised people that, in fact, they do have power and a voice. Through the lens of this being a comedy, it still is about a group of oppressed people, in this case women, who finds their voice.”

“The irony is that as this time when women and our bodies are in the political crosshairs, to hear this play and what Lysistrata is saying and proposing, this sex strike is that they use their bodies, the very thing that’s being threatened, as a weapon,” says Andrea Frankle, director of the reading.

The project stars all local actors, a conscious choice.

“The whole project is a collaborative of artists and theatre people, but also businesses,” says Darnell. “We wanted to make sure the cast was made up of people 12 from Savannah, so it’s the local Savannah

theatre and film community.”

Stillwell and Darnell go way back—he used to babysit her—and reconnected in Los Angeles.

“He feels like family to me,” Stillwell says. “We’re similarly aligned as far as our morals and values, so that works out.

We’re kind of on the same team, as it were, as much as I hate to do a sports metaphor about human rights, but that’s where we’re at.”

Actress and acting teacher Andrea Frankle directs the production.

“When projects like this come up, obviously I can’t say no,” Frankle says. “I was humbled and honored to be able to take up the task. One of the points of this project is to provide a venue and a way to rally all these progressive voices that feel really silenced right now.”

Proceeds benefit equally the ACLU and Planned Parenthood Southeast, an important fundraiser for them at this moment.

Last Friday, the two organizations along with SisterSong filed a lawsuit against Governor Brian Kemp and others in an effort to block the law from taking effect.

HB 481 has proven especially damaging for Georgia’s growing film industry. When the bill was signed into law, high-profile figures like Milano urged for a boycott of the state by the film industry, a fact that Darnell takes issue with.

“Alyssa Milano has been very polarizing in this whole debate,” he says. “But the fact that she called for a boycott of our industry while she was currently shooting a TV show in Georgia didn’t sit well. It’s really a slap in the face, as an artist, to have people who you call friends saying, ‘Boycott Georgia—but sorry you’re out of a job, but this is the greater good.’ I don’t believe this is the greater good. I absolutely believe in stay and fight. I believe this is unconstitutional, I believe this is unhealthy and unsafe for women, and that’s where I stand.”

Darnell explains that Los Angeles just doesn’t have the room for all the productions that need to film thanks to the expansion of programs offered on streaming services, so filming in Georgia is necessary.

Frankle agrees.

“Taking away the jobs is not going to solve the problem of political power,” says Frankle. “Just leaving and taking away the jobs is only going to hurt us. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that out.

There’s 92,000 of us that are employed in the industry [in Georgia]. That’s billions

of dollars. That’s why I really appreciate when Netflix and Disney came out and said, ‘You know what, we agree this is troubling, and we’re going to reevaluate come January, but right now we’re going to stick it out.’”

Stillwell hopes this reading inspires others to take action as well.

“I think we’re living through such an exciting time as a species, to be honest,” says Stillwell. “We’re witnessing and experiencing such a massive wakeup call. We all need to be doing things and going to where we’re moved to go, as far as organizations or causes. I think there’s a massive network of organizers and organizations that are already on the ball.

For all the great people who are passionate and saying, ‘I want to do something,’ there are so many opportunities to jump into a river that’s already flowing. You don’t have to make the water from nothing; you can jump into the flow and we’re all in the water together.” CS

Police makes arrest in double homicide

The Savannah Police’s Violent Crimes detectives have made one arrest in the June 11 double ho micide on Damascus Street.

Derek Gallop Jr., 29, was arrested June 27 and charged with murder in connection to this investigation.

About 9:40 p.m. officers responded to the 6900 block of Damascus Street and discovered four men suffering from gunshot wounds. Devonte Henneghan, 27, and James Fields Jr., 30, were pronounced deceased at the scene. Michael McDaniel, 28, and Deonte Jones, 27, were treated for their injuries.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.

Police seek to identify auto theft suspect

Savannah Police Eastside Precinct detectives need the community’s help identifying a suspect in an auto theft investigation.

At approximately 11:50 p.m. on May 28, the victim stopped at the Savannah Mart on the 1200 block of E. Derenne Avenue.

The victim left their vehicle with the keys inside, doors unlocked and running. When the victim exited the store, the vehicle was gone.

Surveillance footage captured the suspect, who is described as a black male in his 20s wearing a white shirt, jean shorts and red tennis shoes.

Savannah Police’s Traffic Investigation Unit is seeking Robert Lee Frails, 62, as a person of interest in a June 15 hit-and-run crash on E. 37th Street.

About 8:45 p.m. officers responded to the 1100 block of E. 37th Street where they discovered Terry Coleman, 52, suffering from serious injuries. An initial investigation revealed that Coleman was pushing a grocery cart west on the north side of E. 37th Street when he was struck from behind by a gold vehicle. The impact resulted in Coleman and the grocery cart striking a parked vehicle.

The vehicle involved in the crash was later identified as a 1998-2002 gold in color Toyota Corolla. The vehicle was later located, and Frails was identified as a person of interest. He was last known to reside in the 600 block of W. 37th Street.

The Limestone County (Alabama) Sheriff’s Office is on the lookout for Mickey Paulk, 35, after executing a search warrant at an Athens apartment where he was believed to be living on June 17. While Paulk was not at the apartment at the time, officers did find meth, drug paraphernalia, ammunition and body armor, along with DeezNutz, Paulk’s “attack squirrel,” in a cage in the apartment. Sheriff’s deputy Stephen Young told The News Courier officers were told Paulk feeds the squirrel meth to keep it aggressive, which Paulk denied in a Facebook video. Officers released the squirrel into the wild, but Paulk (still on the run) later told news outlets he went back to the apartment and whistled, and DeezNutz returned to him. A GoFundMe page established to help Paulk pay his legal fees. The Limestone sheriff’s office took to Twitter to warn locals to be wary of Paulk: “Mickey Paulk is a fleeing felon with felony warrants unrelated to his squirrel.” (UPDATE: Shortly before press time, the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office announced on Twitter that Paulk had been arrested Thursday night, June 27.)

Early-bird travelers at Detroit Metropolitan Airport got a rude awakening on June 21 when an unnamed man tried to pass through a TSA checkpoint entirely naked. According to WXYZ, the man approached the checkpoint and removed all his clothing, then removed a barrier and approached a metal detector. Officers didn’t allow him through the metal detector, so he ran around it, where he was caught and covered with plastic trash bags. Law enforcement determined he was not a

threat and took him to a local hospital.

Roy and Brenda Pickard of Knotts End, Lancashire, England, lived in a 1960s horror film for a week in June as a pair of nesting herring gulls terrorized them each time they emerged from their home.

“If I try to go out of the door, the two adult birds are right there, and I’ve got no chance,” Roy told the Mirror. At one point, Roy was attacked so viciously on the back of the head that he had to go to the hospital for treatment. Roy contacted animal organizations, but they offered no remedies for the violent birds: It’s breeding season, and herring gulls are protected when nesting.

A 26-year-old man identified only as Chang from Guangdong, China, went out for a Friday night of drinking with friends on June 7 and returned home to find that his keys were missing. Someone inside let him in, and he went to bed to sleep it off.

The next morning, the Chinese news site Sohu reported, Chang awoke with a sharp pain in his chest and went to Dongguan Hospital, where an X-ray revealed the missing house keys lodged deep in his esophagus. Doctors first thought emergency surgery would be necessary

to retrieve the keys, but with the help of a muscle-relaxing drug, a gastroenterologist was able to pull them out through his mouth.

Compelling Explanation

The Behney House Hotel in Myerstown, Pennsylvania, was evacuated after police responded to a reported bomb threat there on June 23, reported WPMT. When officers arrived, they found David Oxenreider, 28, who lives at the hotel, and the homemade bomb he claimed to have made next to a dumpster outside the building. Oxenreider told police he made the bomb to get their attention because he was frustrated that his attempts to warn officials about aliens hadn’t been taken seriously. According to the criminal complaint, Oxenreider said he encountered a UFO and aliens in 2014, who told him “humans need to start being good people, or else they were going to destroy the Earth with a nuclear laser beam.” Police disarmed the device and arrested Oxenreider.

Least Competent Criminal

An unnamed woman arrested earlier was released from the St. Louis Justice Center on the morning of June 5—sort of.

Jail staff gave her clear instructions about how to get out of the building, according to corrections commissioner Dale Glass, but instead she got on the elevator, pushed all the buttons, and got off at the fifth floor, where she exited through a fire door into a stairwell, locking herself in, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. Two and a half days later, staff finally saw her peering through a window in one of the doors.

The woman had made noise during her confinement, but Glass explained that the jail is a noisy place, and the staff couldn’t figure out where the noise was coming from as she moved from floor to floor.

Paramedics were called and the woman was offered hospital care, but she declined.

WHEN LADY ANTEBELLUM takes the stage on July 4th at Fort Stewart, the audience will have already experienced the unique and singular talent that is Caroline Jones, who’s set to open the show. Jones, a prolific singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer, has been pursuing music on a commercial scale for several years—but has truly been doing this for nearly her entire life.

Her latest EP, which she co-produced alongside Grammy-winning producer Ric Wake (known for his work with Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, and Trisha Yearwood), is a beautifully-produced set of country songs that speak to not only her talents as an artist but also behind the board. She spent many years honing her craft, after realizing a love of writing as a child.

“I started writing poetry and short stories when I was a really little girl. I just loved words and I loved art,” she tells Connect. “When I was nine years old, I asked my parents for singing lessons. Once I started singing, I realized that I could put all of those poems and stories to music.

Something just clicked, and I never wanted to do anything else after that.”

The touring and recording life, she says, has been “decades in the making.” Around 2008, Jones noticed the the music industry beginning to crumble and decided to start carving her own path towards longevity.

“I went to a performing arts school that allowed me to go into the studio in the afternoons,” she says. “So late in high school, I kind of came to a crossroads. I

saw how the landscape of the industry was changing, so it became really important to me to focus on building a craft and an identity that would allow me to build something more long term.”

With the record industry shifting rapidly and the digital age incoming, Jones decided not to go the traditional major label route. Instead, she continued working in studios and began touring high schools and colleges. She created the Heart is Smart Initiative, which allowed her to run workshops and master classes, all while producing her own independent records and managing her own career.

“It wasn’t until 2015, when I met Ric Wake, that I ventured more into the commercial music sphere. That was when I started touring on a big level. I met Zac Brown and he kind of took me under his wing. But I’ve been playing music and booking my own tours for years prior,” she says.

All of that work on a grassroots level led her to Bare Feet, the EP she produced alongside Wake. She also went on to tour with the likes of Jimmy Buffett, Tim McGraw & Faith Hill, and Kenny Chensey.

As for what’s next, Jones says she’s currently working on a new EP that’s slated for

the fall. There’s also a “surprise coming” very soon that features some of her “heroes and mentors”—she’s fairly secretive about specifics, but it’s sure to be something special.

After many years of hard work and DIY dedication, Caroline Jones is taking on the world of country with her own vision in tow. Given her experience with production and studio work, Jones was able to bring her ideas and sonic expertise Bare Feet and co-produce the songs—a very rare occurrence for an artist in the music industry.

“When I met Ric, I’d always been scared of co-producing because I had my own process and vision for things,” she says.

“I just found the perfect partner in Ric, because he really opened my mind to a more seasoned perspective. He knows from experience and his great instinct, he knows what parts will work and how to refine them. I love production. I consider it as important to what I do as songwriting or singing or playing instruments.” CS

MUSIC INTERVIEW So it’s a pretty unique and special deal to be able to do life and music with your best friend. That whole crazy dynamic is a big part of our show. We’ve been here for 14 years now, and Savannah has really welcomed us.

In fact, the very first big show we did was July fourth, I guess 13 years ago now. The whole show was sold out, and it ended with a grand New Orleans-style parade. We led all 1,200 people out the front door, through Reynolds Square, across Bay Street, down to River Street. It was the biggest hit. We did it for a few years but logistically it became a nightmare. We ended up going different places for the fourth of July show, and now we’re settling back into a new tradition here in Savannah, whichis the coolest one yet in part because all of the logistical challenges have been removed.

You’ve led me quite naturally to my next question! What’s the deal with this year’s performance?

WHAT BETTER WAY to celebrate the Fourth of July with a patriotic show from one of Savannah’s most versatile and entertaining groups? Jeremy Davis and Clay Johnson are set to bring their Fabulous Equinox Orchestra to the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa, where they’re planning a big show full of patriotic songs and something for everyone.

Davis and Johnson’s brass-centric group has been together for over a decade, after both men—who’ve known each other since childhood—moved to town from Maurice, Louisiana to spread their musical wings.

They’ve been doing Fourth of July shows in town ever since, and have become an integral part of the music community.

Ahead of this year’s show, we spoke to Davis about what the band is up to and what to expect from this year’s party.

16 I saw that y’all are playing over in

Israel later this month. Playing there was certainly one of the highlights of my life; tell me how that opportunity came about?

Davis: We have an [offshoot] of what we do called Equinox Global Mission. We use the music to be a blessing to people.

Sometimes that looks like going to nursing homes and facilities to uplift them. As you know, music has the ability to connect people unlike anything out there.

It all started in India for us. We went over there on a big trip, and that’s where we really realized the power of the music we play and how it can speak to people.

And since then, we’ve toured all the way up to Halifax, Nova Scotia with that project.

We did Poland, too. Poland was great; the Polish friends kind of have a big sports, art, and music camp they do in Israel too.

That’s where it all started, and it ultimately didn’t work out to partner but we ended up being able to do it ourselves.

We’re doing 10 days in Israel. We’re doing the full Holy Land tour, going to all the spots, and we have a film crew going

with us. We have six shows over the course of those 10 days. One of them is a show for Holocaust survivors, which should be an amazing experience. And we’re doing several public shows as well.

Tell me about the history of this group. You and Clay sort of moved here together, didn’t you?

Davis: Yeah, close enough [laughs]. It’s a crazy story that begins in the sixth grade.

We went to school in West Monroe, Louisiana, so we always carry a spicy dash of that Louisiana vibe. That whole New Orleans street parade thing is a big signature part of our show. So, in the seventh grade, our mothers discovered that we had every class together. It was a weird glitch in the system, where two identical schedules printed out. And the rest is history!

We ended up learning music together, we went through college together, we were roommates, we ended up meeting our wives around the same time and getting married two weeks apart. Then we ended up moving to Savannah with our families.

Davis: The whole show happens at the Westin on the beautiful harbor lawn.

When you walk out the back door of the hotel, you walk out onto this beautiful manicured green that is facing the river.

There’s really two types of seating for the concert—there’s a whole bunch of VIP tables gathered close to the stage, and then behind those are concert-style seating.

The seats are there, so there’s no crazy shuffle to find a seat or fight the massive River Street crowd. We just found that our audience didn’t really want to deal with that, so this is perfect.

The VIP tickets come with a really cool pre-show party, a bar, and then you go straight from there to the show. And there’s food for purchase for the general admission folks. So we’ve just made it as easy as we can. And of course, the fourth of July show is different than our normal show because we’re doing patriotic music.

There are a couple of staples in the show because people expect to see them, but it’s mostly patriotic. We’ve got Ray Charles’ “America the Beautiful,” which is always special. Having done this for the last 13 years or so, it’s become really special to us. We honor our veterans and honor our country. This year we’re raising awareness and funds for a group called Companions for Heroes. They partner rescue animals with soldiers and first responders who are struggling with PTSD. They’ve saved thousands of lives, and they do a lot of good. So a portion of the proceeds will go to them. CS

Paying tribute to Georgia greats Allman Brothers Band tribute band set for Coach’s Corner gig

THE LEGACY of the Allman Brothers Band cannot be overstated; they were a trailblazing Georgia band that fused blues, rock, country and jazz in a way that became the blueprint for country rock and the jam band scene. Gregg and Duane Allman formed the band in Macon in the late 60s and soon found critical and commercial acclaim—cementing a legacy that has continued well past the brothers’ deaths.

Part of what allows the band to live on, aside from its various offshoots and the projects of various members over the years that have achieved considerable success, is the genuine passion fans have for their music. That’s where Tribute comes in. The Atlanta-based Allman Brothers tribute plays regularly throughout the Southeast, celebrating the Allman catalog and garnering critical praise in the process.

The band is set to swing through Savannah on Fri., July 5 for a show at Coach’s Corner, and we spoke to guitarist Rod Gunther ahead of the gig.

When you listen to the early live recordings that are floating around, you can see some of those signature licks that later became integral to the song. They developed, and they developed spontaneously and improvisationally.

The Allman Brothers Band is quite possibly the most widely beloved Georgia export in music history, and they’re certainly one of the most influential bands ever. So it might be an obvious question, but what prompted you to start a tribute band?

Gunther: A number of things, but number one is I’ve always been a huge fan.

They were a big influence on my early appreciation of music, and one of the big reasons that I started playing guitar. And from a business aspect, in terms of why we’d choose that band—they just have incredible longevity. Their music is still as relevant today as it was then.

SAVANNAH STAGE SHARES THE UNIQUE STORY OF VIOLET Star McKenna Lyons talks ahead of opening night

VIOLET was a unique musical when it first opened in 1997, and it remains just that today. The show, based on a short story by Doris Betts called “The Ugliest Pilgrim,” features music written by the acclaimed, Tony-winning composer Jeanine Tesori and tells the story of the titular Violet traveling across the South in 1964 to meet a televangelist who she hopes will help her heal a scar on her face.

The musical is full of songs that range in style from gospel to bluegrass and other American roots genres. It’s a unique story with powerful songs, and Savannah Stage Company is bringing it to the Clyde Venue starting on Thurs., July 11. Ahead of the show’s opening, we spoke to star McKenna Lyons.

This seems like a really unique show.

For anyone unfamiliar, what’s the story about and how do the musical elements come into play?

Lyons: This is the story of a young woman who has what she refers to as a “disfiguring facial scar.” She embarks on this cross country journey, on a Greyhound bus, to 22 seek a televangelist who she hopes will

heal her. Our musical director, Megan Blanton, says that as we move along through the South on this journey, there’s a specific style of music for each stop we take.

There’s bluegrass, there are rock and roll sounds in here, there’s some gospel when she finally gets to where the televangelist is. There’s a great mix of music, I think.

How long have you been involved with Savannah Stage?

What’s one thing about your character that you’ve enjoyed so far? And is there something you get from playing Violet that you haven’t gotten from roles in the past?

Lyons: I moved here three years ago, and I did not move to Savannah with the intention of pursuing theater [laughs].

But I ended up getting involved in a community production, and eventually found my way to Savannah Stage Company. I auditioned for them, in hopes of participating in one of their summer musicals. I initially wasn’t offered anything, I was just a company member.

So I went to the monthly acting labs, where we all got together and explored a different element of our craft.

Through that, I actually got offered a role in Call of the Wild. That was my first show with them. And I’ve been doing shows ever since! I performed with them through their fifth season, which was the season of values. Last year was their season of service, and now we’re in the

When you come here to Savannah, you definitely find your people and find your “thing.”

Lyons: Oh yeah! You sure do [laughs].

onto the bus and she’s just about to leave her hometown. But there are other people on the bus who are about to embark on journeys on their own. So we’re all singing this song together. It’s such a lovely piece of music, too.

We’ve also got a choreographer who’s giving some very specific-yet-human movements to this song that gives another level of beauty to it.

Is there anything else you wanted to add about the show?

Lyons: One thing about playing Violet is that it’s just a singular character. In a lot of shows I’ve done, I’ve had to take on several different characters in one show. It’s nice to explore this character, because she’s just so beautifully complex. You really get to see her life change in this hour and a half.

I love exploring how strong she is, but also how vulnerable she is.

Lyons: One thing I’d like to add is that tickets are “pay what you can.” So if people can’t afford the ticket price of $18, they can still come. If there are still seats available once everyone who bought tickets have been seated, they can pay whatever. So if you have $1 and you want to see the show, you can see the show. Savannah Stage Company is all about accessible theater, and I think that’s a great value that they have. CS

AINT-BAD AND Laney Contemporary share a strong working relationship.

Back when Susan Laney was at Oglethorpe Gallery, she hosted some of the publication’s first exhibitions. She’s always been a supporter of photography as a medium, both through her oversight of photographer Jack Leigh’s collection and through her support of local photographers.

“Collaborations,” on view at Laney Contemporary now through Aug. 10, is the result of a years-long partnership and the first exhibition of its kind to be held at the gallery.

The work for “Collaborations” was curated from the submissions for Aint-Bad Issue 13, which came out last fall.

Laney, who curated both the exhibition and the issue, was joined by her Laney Contemporary partner Allison Westerfield and by Aint-Bad’s Taylor Curry, Carson Sanders, and Lisa Jaye Young.

The issue had 14 curators, and they went through submissions by around 900 artists.

“We just worked together,” says Laney.

“We picked what we thought would be

best for the exhibition, and sometimes the actual work on the wall isn’t in the publication, but the artist’s work is. That was fun because we had more to choose from, and it came together so beautifully.”

In addition to the work for the exhibition, Aimée Beaubein created an installation for Laney’s mirrored room, which has been a point of fascination and experiment for exhibiting artists since Laney’s opening. “[Aimée] teaches at the Art Institute of Chicago, so she flew in from Chicago, put together the installation in four days, freaked out over this room,” remembers Laney. “It was fun to have her energy and her excitement in here. She’s fairly new to installation work—she’s been doing it for two or three years and it’s interesting to see the different kinds of installations she’s done. This one is very different, just because he space is, but also her weaving the photographs and her presentation is different for this.”

While the curators initially intended to keep the submissions within the country, they were able to include some work by a Japanese and a South Korean photographer, which is a great opportunity for Savannah’s viewers.

“We’re presenting work that really has not been seen in this region and is something very different, something we haven’t come close to doing before,” says

Laney. “This exhibition is very different from everything else, mainly because of the breadth of work. It’s not just one piece from one photographer. We really zeroed in on Aint-Bad as a publication, the reason for Aint-Bad, the vision of these photographers and the vision of Aint-Bad looking out into what’s going on in photography today.”

“We’ve always, from the beginning, wanted to simply promote the collection and appreciation of contemporary photography, and have it be as affordable as possible,” says Sanders. “Selling a less expensive book or magazine allows more people to collect work from an artist, and having the opportunity to do exhibitions like this really brings home that fine-art aspect of Aint-Bad. To see these beautiful framed works on the wall give the ability for our serious collectors to pick up some works from photographers that may not have been shown in this region before.”

Since its inception in 2011, Aint-Bad’s vision has remained the same, even as staff has come and gone.

“From the very beginning, I’ve been interested in how this group of people, very talented photographers with different talents and skill sets [came together],” says Laney. “They have so many people working with Aint-Bad that are working remotely, which has really been interesting because at first, it was all based here, and

as people moved away and took jobs in different places, they stayed connected and it created this incredible community. It’s just been interesting to see how it grew over the years.”

“It’s evolved a lot,” joins Sanders. “We’ve always walked this line between, ‘Is it a book or a magazine?’ It certainly feels more like a book now, but it still is treated like a magazine with a fairly affordable cover price. If you find it in a bookstore, it’s going to be in the magazine section, not on the shelves next to hardcover photography books.”

As Aint-Bad marks eight years, Sanders thinks about its future.

“The vision has been the same, and it’s expanded,” says Sanders. “We’re trying to grow our business, we’re trying to grow ourselves as artists, as creatives, pushing.

Taylor [Curry] does all our graphic design, so he’s pushing his creativity to keep up with the trends of various other publications as well as books. The work we’re showing has to be desirable to a large audience or people are going to go to another website or publication to look at work. QUESTIONS WITH Honor Bowman Hall

PAINTER AND SCAD Foundations professor Honor Bowman Hall has lived all over, from Alaska to Mississippi to New York City.

Her art changes with each city she paints in, creating a body of work that’s constantly changing.

Her paintings use bold colors and verge into abstraction to create a bright landscape that’s all her own.

Hall is also part of the Friendship Magic Collective with fellow SCAD professor and Greg Eltringham, and they share a studio at the Drawing Room Gallery on 42nd Street.

We spoke with Hall last week.

What was your background like before Savannah?

After college, I wanted to move to New York; that had always been my thing.

Within a few weeks, I had an apartment and was working at the Metropolitan Museum of Art which was amazing. Then I also had another job in the music industry.

I was doing licensing for songwriters.

It was awesome and I met a lot of great friends through that job, and I just had a blast. I loved living there. I had so many great opportunities.

I would go sit in the American wing and it fostered my love of art. I started having a nagging feeling about going back to school.

I stayed there for four years and learned to be independent and to work and about creativity. I met my now-husband there, and after four years we moved here and I went to SCAD for my Masters.

It was a huge change. It was so different.

When we left New York in late February, it was terrible and cold and blustery. We got off the plane to palm trees. I was like, “This is it.”

My lifestyle would have had to change so much staying in New York but not working full time. I couldn’t have afforded it.

2. What’s it like being back in Savannah?

24 So much changed in six years. I had time to

create. I went from taking huge stretcher bars on the subway with a plastic handle and carrying them five miles to just driving to Home Depot. Savannah was the perfect place for me to come.

It’s a little different because I’m coming back somewhere. In Alaska I got to know everybody. Coming back here, I don’t know that many people, but I feel now that I’ve been back two years that I’m getting to know people. It’s been good; it’s been different. I still miss Alaska and I think that impacts my experience here. But counterbalancing that is that fact that I love my job so much. I teach Foundations [at SCAD].

It’s their very beginning.

You’re in Friendship Magic Collective with Greg Eltringham. How did you meet him?

Greg was my professor at SCAD and he became such a good mentor for me. When I was almost done with the program and his classes, we started playing music together and we had a band with someone else called the Tramp Stamps. We still play together!

When I came back, we really started hanging out again and painting together again and decided to do a collective so we could just do projects together. We have a lot of ideas that work together, and weirdly our color palettes work together.

I left Savannah in 2012 and since then, both of us have developed so much. It’s kind of crazy that the work has so many similarities, so we just decided we should show together.

Last year we went on Art on the Air and Rob [Hessler] asked us if we would ever consider making a painting together, and we were like, “No way!” But then we just made a painting together [laughs]. We started it for the SCAD block party and it came out really cool. I think that’s a direction we might pursue. That’s what’s so weird about it to me—both of us are control freaks because in your studio you’re the person. But it ended up working out, so that’s weird and cool.

We have a show coming up at Studio Sesh Arts in Islamorada, Florida, in December. We’re also planning on making two or three more collaborative paintings.

I also don’t think of [my work] as traditional landscape painting. It’s my way of seeing it, my way of creating visual logic.

How does your work change as you move?

With my Alaska work, even though it’s my same visual language, the palette and the sensibility are so different. Starland Yard

sets the tone for the district

BY NOW the rumors of Savannah’s first food truck park have been confirmed. One may even say dispelled because what is actually coming to Savannah’s Starland District is so much more than a food truck park.

If you drive through the bustling Starland District, you will not miss the expansive space which now holds stacked shipping containers. These containers make up the spot that will soon be called Starland Yard. The creators, which include Guy Davidson, Pila Sunderland, Niko 26 Ormond, John Benhase, and Ava Pandiani,

wanted to bring locals a shareable space that would bring all of the Starland District (and Savannah) together. The focus is local fool and local art plus the accumulation of community to create a truly local Savannah experience.

Starland Yard is built with old shipping containers, cut, chopped, and combined to create something completely new out of something old. Just another example of the design and idea which reflects the area.

The sprawling space has an area for just about everything—part bar, part food truck park, part restaurant, and part meeting ground.

The team even commissioned local artist Jimmy Butcher of The Butcher Tattoo Studio to paint a big beautiful mural on the shipping container that sits above what will be Chef Kyle Jacovino’s new pizza joint, Pizzeria Vittoria Napoletana.

Ava Pandiani, the General Manager of Starland Yard, was gracious enough to take time out of her whirlwind schedule to give me a tour of the space and answer some questions, which explain what they’re doing in a little bit more detail.

Q: Tell me the story of Starland Yard.

A: The whole idea was that Starland District, for a long time, has had this dream of the come up: It is going to be great, this is going to be where Savannahians hang out, this is going to be where all these restaurants are going to be, it is going to be all of these different stores. For me, when I first moved here four years ago, my first job was at the Florence, so I heard that all the

Q: What are some of the features that are going to be included?

A: We have a covered area that can be a private event space. We can hold up to fifty people just in the top. So we are thinking weddings, we are thinking if you want to have your corporate party for something or someone is retiring, you can have your own space.

We can fit four trucks in the rainbow drive area. And just as easily we can flip one to face [the event space]. If your group just wants Pie Society’s food truck, you can close [the event space] off easily and make it to where you can still see everyone.

There is going to be a kids area. It is going to have four foot walls so the kids are not running into trucks. If you are a parent you can sit in a covered area, you can have your kids running around. They can eat a hot dog, have a view and a beer. The idea is to make it very comfortable for everyone.

We will have bocce and cornhole. Things like that for people who want to drink a beer and play a game.

There is another container in the back that will have televisions. There will be televisions there but not the bar. If you

want to watch a UGA game on a Sunday there is a space for you to do that. Then the bar isn’t just sports bar vibe.

Jimmy from the Butcher is doing a big mural. We have been talking to a few other artists. Part one is we want [Starland Yard] to be inclusive of the community that we are in. Especially when we are hiring, we want everyone to feel like this is their space, and they can come here. Part two is we want it to represent local artists too, which is important. That is the vibe of Starland so we want to keep that going.

Q: How will Starland Yard work?

A: We are going to be a cashless, and when I say cashless it is with an asterisk—of course some insist people on paying with cash. A cashless establishment so you can come here and open a tab immediately [at the entrance]. So now Starland Yard has my credit card swiped in with my name and my number. I can now go to Vittoria and get a pizza and put it on the tab. I can go to the bar and get a drink and put it on the tab. I can go to Pie Society, get a blueberry cobbler and put it on the tab. The exit will be on the other side of the entrance, so when people are coming out they will checkout, they will get one check, and they pay at one time.

The one exception to the rule is that Kyle is quasi-independent. If you want to come in and just get a pizza then leave, we will still check your ID to make sure you are 21, but if you just want to pay at Vittoria you can. CS

mothers who have to work, you don’t have a choice. It brings up a lot of those questions which I find endlessly fascinating. You might put yourself in her shoes.

We should think, “Wow, it’s 2019, maybe that’s okay.” But in her time, you step back and think, “Wow, she would have just done a bit of charity work and gone to lunches.”

For her socioeconomic level, that’s what she would be doing. She did speak out for women’s rights.

She talked about this one point where she was traveling through Algeria and Morocco and Spain, and she was really alarmed by the treatment of women and child brides. She comes back and writes that we should judge a nation by the way it treats its women. She’s writing that in 1895.

CS: For being such a progressive figure for her time, why do you think she’s not more well-known today?

I think just over time, so many people like her fall by the wayside. You’ll find people who are climbers and extreme cyclists who will know her name. Even in women’s studies programs, she’s not really known. She’s known more for the physical things she did and some of what she wrote.

She doesn’t have any surviving descendants. Her daughter had three sons but they all died very young. I think no one really carried her name.

CS: I have to think she’d like being known for her accomplishments, rather than just being a woman.

One of the quotes in the beginning of the book is, “Judge me for what I do, not because I’m a woman.” That’s tricky because when you’re a trailblazer, you’re the first woman to do this, but she wants to be judged on her merit and what she did and how she did it.

CS: What’s the structure of the event Thursday?

Right now, I’ll read from [the book], talk a little bit back and forth, and then just talk about it. I love to talk to readers either about the book or the writing process. I spent two and a half years with Fanny, and sometime someone brings up a question that I didn’t think of! CS

YESTERDAY

OOO (3.5 out of four) Yesterday arrives on the cinematic scene boasting a terrific premise, but, as the hoary saying goes, that’s only half the battle. Executing a catchy premise with the attention and intelligence it deserves is another matter, and that’s where many movies drop the ball (recent cases in point: The Dead Don’t Die and Alita: Battle Angel). Happily, that’s not the case with Yesterday, an absolutely inspiring and disarming picture that makes the most of its unique hook.

EastEnders’ Himesh Patel proves to be an affable lead as Jack Malik, an aspiring singer-songwriter whose career is going nowhere in his English seaside town.

With only his friend and manager Ellie (Lily James) believing in him, he decides it’s time to finally call it quits and back off from music. But after he gets hit by a bus during a strange blackout that affects the entire world, he reawakens to find some things have changed. Specifically, he learns that, somehow, The Beatles have never existed, meaning that no one has ever heard of John-Paul-George-Ringo or Abbey Road or “I Saw Her Standing There.”

Thus, when Jack plays one of their songs, everyone assumes that he wrote it and he’s quickly praised for his musical genius.

Sensing an opportunity, he recalls from memory as many Beatles songs as he can (although he struggles to remember the exact lyrics to “Eleanor Rigby”) and passes them off as his own. Not surprisingly, he soon becomes the biggest music star in the world.

Yesterday is largely positioned as a love story between Jack and Ellie, which makes sense since, in the immortal words of Lennon-McCartney, all you need is love.

This portion of the film takes time getting established — the beginning is so fuzzy that I thought Jack pined for Ellie, not vice versa — but, backed by the gentle performances from Patel and James, it eventually comes into focus. And for comic relief, Joel Fry is on hand as Jack’s dim-witted road manager (he’s only fitfully amusing) and Kate McKinnon turns up as Jack’s no-nonsense new agent (she’s uproarious throughout).

Still, it’s the Beatles angle that of course provides the film with most of its juice.

Sharply scripted by Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral) and zestfully directed by Danny Boyle (Trainspotting), Yesterday touches on relevant themes connected to the world of entertainment, including the need to be in the right place at the right time to get discovered (if a song falls from a singer’s lips and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?), the humbling nature of genuine works of art (Ed Sheeran, playing himself, laments that he’s Salieri to Jack’s Mozart), and the manner in which committee groupthink

can destroy originality (e.g. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is a terrible title, the White Album lacks diversity, and “Hey Jude” would make more sense as “Hey Dude”). There’s also a late-inning development that might strike some as tasteless, although I found it lovely. And as the cherry on top, it’s revealed that The Beatles aren’t the only thing forgotten by the world (no fair springing the surprises here).

In a summer season starved for originality (12 remakes/sequels and counting), it would be easy to latch onto Yesterday even if it failed to deliver. Thankfully, there’s no need to lower any standards to accept and embrace this picture. On its own merits, it gives viewers plenty of reasons to twist and shout.

OPHELIA

OOO (3 out of four) In every traditional adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, it’s established that there might be a method to the Danish prince’s madness. Has the melancholy son of the murdered king really gone insane in the brain, or is he just feigning craziness as a ruse?

In Ophelia, this mode of madness also applies to its titular character. In the Shakespeare text, Hamlet’s lady love clearly loses her mind and ends up drowning, but in this offbeat offshoot of the original, the waters are more murky than previously imagined. Hard-line traditionalists might clutch their thesis papers and faint, but those interested in radical approaches to art will be amused at how this picture colors in certain details.

And until the lamentable denouement, it does so without ever straying outside the margins.

Directed by Claire McCarthy and scripted by Semi Chellas (adapting Lisa Klein’s YA novel), Ophelia offers an

imaginative retelling of an acknowledged masterpiece from an alternate POV. Daisy Ridley, best known as the Jedi Rey in the latest round of Star Wars adventures, essays the role of Ophelia, who’s no longer a supporting character in someone else’s show but rather the headliner. Thus, it’s largely through her eyes that we watch the castle intrigue unfold, as young Hamlet (George MacKay) is rocked by the death of his father and suspects that Claudius (Clive Owen, sporting an unfortunate wig seemingly left over from Monty Python and the Holy Grail) was responsible for his demise. But Claudius is now married to Hamlet’s mother, Queen Gertrude (a fiery Naomi Watts), and therefore untouchable, meaning that the prince must go to extraordinary lengths to exact his revenge.

As for Ophelia, she’s no passive observer but a key player in the proceedings, ignoring the advice of both her duplicitous dad Polonius (Dominic Mafham) and wellmeaning brother Laertes (Tom Felton) and mapping out a course of action that will result in a happily-ever-after for herself and Hamlet. Good luck with that.

There’s great fun in watching the liberties taken by Ophelia and understanding that none of it actually runs contrary to what was set in stone in Shakespeare’s original. It’s conceivable that these new sequences taking place at the same time as the ones immortalized in Hamlet could really be occurring, and when the two storylines intersect, they do so in a manner that clicks together like two puzzle pieces.

That’s why the final act of Ophelia ranks as such a disappointment. After carefully bridging the gap between the two narratives for almost the entirety, there was an inexplicable decision to suddenly toss the dog-eared Folger Shakespeare Library copy of the play out the window

and make everything up. The climactic scuffle differs from the original text in ways that cannot be covered up, and these perplexing plot pirouettes only serve to weaken our admiration for what McCarthy and co. have accomplished up to this point.

It’s a debilitating flaw but not a destructive one, as the majority of Ophelia is a bold and brainy undertaking that’s definitely worth seeing and admiring. But this lazy, last-minute revision does run counter to the carefully structured storyline that preceded it, and there’s the rub.

CHILD’S PLAY

O (1.5 out of four) Conceived by Don Mancini, directed by Tom Holland, and scripted by Mancini, Holland and John Lafia, 1988’s Child’s Play was a nifty horror yarn that introduced the world to Chucky (voiced by Brad Dourif), a “Good Guy”-brand doll possessed by the spirit of a serial killer following a voodoo incantation. Kevin Yagher designed the excellent effects that animated the Chucky doll, with a clear distinction between the harmless “Good Guy” mode and the demented killer look. In other words, simply based on looks, it was easy to see why kids would want a Good Guy doll and equally obvious why absolutely no one would want a psychotic one.

The new version, also titled Child’s Play, has no room for such niceties, preferring to bask in laziness at every turn. In this rendition (which tellingly received no input from Mancini or Holland), Chucky (voiced by Mark Hamill) isn’t evil because he harbors the soul of a mass murderer; instead, he’s naughty because a disgruntled factory employee disabled all of his AI safety features. Be still, my beating heart. It’s a ludicrous concept, although I suspect some susceptible viewers might arrive home after the screening and worry that Alexa might burn the house down or, even worse, cancel their Netflix and Amazon Prime subscriptions.

As for the look of Chucky? The poor design means he’s as creepy BEFORE he’s possessed as afterward, and the thought of children lining up to buy this hideous doll is only slightly less believable than the thought of 5-year-olds queueing up to purchase a Che Guevara T-shirt or a DVD of Antonioni’s The Passenger.

The general plot is the same, as Andy’s mom (Aubrey Plaza) gives her son (Gabriel Bateman) a damaged Buddi doll that ends up going on a homicidal tear. But the story modifications do this version no favors, particularly the risible climax in which shoppers are bombarded by Chuckycontrolled toys. With a scarcity of scares and little internal logic at play, here’s one defective product that should be placed back in the box posthaste.

ANNA

OO (2 out of four) There’s a scene in writer-director Luc Besson’s Anna in which the title character, a trained assassin for the KGB, is forced to wipe out an entire restaurant of heavily armed thugs. Watching this sequence, I felt an incredible wave of déjà vu, as if I had seen this sequence before. Not a similar sequence, mind you, but this EXACT sequence. Was it a glitch in the matrix?

Actually, it’s more like a glitch in the imagination. Anna plays like a carbon copy of earlier, better action flicks featuring a female protagonist, some helmed by Besson himself. But if the filmmaker is trying to capture lightning twice by producing another film on the order of his influential La Femme Nikita, the most he can muster are a few flinty sparks.

Anna is the name of a hard-luck woman (Sasha Luss) who gets recruited by the KGB for their dirty assignments. She’s under the tutelage of Alex Tchenkov (Luke Evans), who falls for her, and Olga (Helen Mirren), who never lets up on her.

Eventually, she catches the attention of the CIA, particularly an agent (Cillian Murphy) who thinks he might be able to turn her.

For the pivotal role of Anna, Besson opted to cast a real supermodel, so it’s not surprising that Luss seems most at ease in the scenes in which her character is posing as a supermodel. Otherwise, she’s a blank slate, an undesirable quality for a movie in which audiences are supposed to completely align behind the harried heroine. Evans and especially Murphy disappear in their flat assignments, but Mirren has some fun as the domineering Olga, barking orders while saddled with oversized glasses and an unflattering haircut. If The Incredibles’ Edna Mode was an animated caricature of Edith Head, then Anna’s Olga is a live-action caricature of Edna Mode.

TOY STORY 4

OOO (3 out of four) They should have quit while they were ahead.

The Toy Story trio that stretched from 1995 to 2010 quickly revealed itself as one of the greatest trilogies in film history.

All three entries are worthy of four stars, which for my money catapults it above even such fan favorites as The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Dark Knight trilogy.

But as Pixar profits continue to hit the high heavens — and with parent company Disney now in the business of doing little else but capitalizing on past successes — it’s not surprising that another entry has made its way to theaters. After all, it’s no coincidence that only one of the first 10 pictures produced by Pixar was a sequel, whereas a whopping seven of the last 11 have been follow-ups.

And so we have Toy Story 4, an enjoyable outing that nevertheless puts a small dent in the overall worthiness of the beloved franchise. In this one, cowboy Woody (voiced as always by Tom Hanks) has gone from being Andy’s favorite toy to new owner Molly’s least favorite plaything, relegated to the dusty closet while Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), Jessie (Joan Cusack) and the rest of the gang continue to enjoy quality time with the little moppet.

But Woody finds himself with a new purpose once Molly builds her own toy in class. That would be Forky (Tony Hale), a spork who insists he’s not a toy but “trash.”

Woody finds himself perpetually having to prevent Forky from diving into the nearest rubbish bin (a great running gag), but matters take a darker turn once Woody and Forky find themselves separated from Molly and the other toys.

They end up first in an antique store, where they run afoul of a doll named Gabby Gabby (Christina Hendricks) and her army of creepy ventriloquist dummies (lookalikes all named Vincent), and then at a carnival, where Woody finds himself reunited with his lost love Bo Peep (Annie Potts).

Aside from Woody and, to a far lesser degree, Buzz and Jessie, the old reliables are barely utilized, meaning fans of Rex (Wallace Shawn), Hamm (John Ratzenberger) and Mr. Potato Head (the late Don Rickles, resurrected by archival recordings) will be left wanting. In their place are several new characters, running the gamut from interesting to annoying.

Toy Story 4 is entertaining and eager to please, but what it’s lacking is the gravitas of the previous three pictures, all of which not only beautifully explored the dynamics between child and toy but also worked over our emotions like Muhammad Ali pummeling a lesser opponent.

There are moments in this latest chapter that pull on the heartstrings ever so faintly, but for the most part, the filmmakers are more focused on keeping the proceedings popping … and in keeping those cash registers ka-chinging.

THE DEAD DON’T DIE

O With such heavyweights as Scorsese and Spielberg hogging the headlines and the awards, there’s a case to be made for writer-director Jim Jarmusch being perhaps the most underrated filmmaker in America. Since 1980, he has been consistent in delivering intelligent and idiosyncratic movies, frequently hopping from genre to genre but always maintaining his quirky sensibilities, wry humor, and deep affection for humankind in all its messy imperfections.

witness The Dead Don’t Die, which feels like some sort of cinematic end-of-theworld apocalypse. If the auteur responsible for such gems as Stranger Than Paradise, Mystery Train and Only Lovers Left Alive has resorted to making movies this bad, then we’re all doomed.

On paper, a zombie movie starring Bill Murray sounds like it can’t miss … and it didn’t, when it was called Zombieland. The Dead Don’t Die is a different type of horror comedy, one filtered through Jarmusch’s particular worldview.

In this one, the residents of the small town of Centerville have suddenly found themselves overrun by the undead. The cause somehow seems to be polar fracking, which has led to the planet shifting off its natural rotation.

Among those forced to fend off various zombie attacks are the local law officers (Murray, Adam Driver and Chloe Sevigny), a funeral home director (Tilda Swinton) who’s handy with a samurai sword, and a horror-film geek (Caleb Landry Jones) who runs a combo gas station and movie memorabilia shop.

Jarmusch’s take on the zombies is that, even in death, they cling to what they most appreciated in life. “Coffee,” mutters the Iggy Pop zombie; “Chardonnay,” mumbles the Carol Kane zombie. That’s a clever gag, but the more prominent theme that humans are already mindless zombies due to their materialistic impulses was already handled in a far more meaningful manner by George Romero in the 1978 classic Dawn of the Dead, the one in which the natural urge of the walking dead was to head straight for the mall.

The wordplay employed by Jarmusch is particularly moldy in this picture. I liked UPS being renamed WU-PS, but having a right-wing jerk (Steve Buscemi) wearing a red hat that reads, “KEEP AMERICA WHITE AGAIN” is just lazy and having Rosie Perez play a reporter named Posie Juarez is just stupid.

Other aspects of the screenplay are just as grasping, such as having Driver’s character discuss having read the film’s script as well as a grueling, pull-the-hairout gag in which characters successively arriving at the scene of a zombie attack all repeat the same sentences verbatim (“A wild animal? Or several wild animals?”).

It’s incredible that, with a cast this loaded (other players include Danny Glover, Tom Waits and Selena Gomez), no one is able to make much of an impression.

Jarmusch directs everyone to perform in a deadpan manner — everyone, that is, except for Sevigny, whose emoting is raw and palpable and thus at odds with the efforts from the other, laid-back cast members. Then again, her incessant shrieking at least provides a minute spark of life to an otherwise DOA effort.
