Winners and losers in ‘superstar’ cities

BOTH HERE and in my travels recently, I’ve been awestruck by the pace and scale of revitalization going on in many American cities.

Every time I think it might finally have to slow down, if just to cool off for a bit, it just speeds up even more.

From high-rise apartment buildings sprouting like mushrooms all over previously blighted areas, to massive private/ public investments on scales previously undreamt of, to a plethora of new food and beverage options on seemingly every street corner, Sun Belt cities from Atlanta to Nashville to Charleston to Savannah are exploding economically.

One jaw-dropping statistic says that over 70 percent of American job growth in the last ten years has been in the largest and/ or hottest cities.

That is urbanization on a truly grand scale, probably only matched by the first Industrial Revolution.

Contributing factors include millennials graduating from college and entering the work/marriage/homeowner market, the increasing importance of knowledgebased jobs, and the slow but steady reversal of a half-century of “White Flight.”

The profound and still-widening cultural and political divide between urban and rural America, in my opinion, has also played a huge part in this new economic reality.

But what does it really mean? And are these streets really paved with gold for everyone in these hot cities?

A timely recent edition of the NPR podcast “Planet Money” delivered some major insight during this time when even little ol’ Savannah seems to be growing and changing faster than anyone can effectively deal with. (Hat tip to Connect contributor Jason Combs for calling my attention to this podcast, Episode 919.)

According to MIT economics professor David Autor, the “boom” in hot-market jobs is very counterintuitive — arguably even deceptive — in nature.

In a phenomenon called “Urban Job Polarization,” it turns out these hot markets actually develop two tiers of jobs: High-paying knowledge-based jobs which require a college education, and low-paying service jobs which don’t.

The middle tier of jobs, research shows, is more and more hollowed out due to automation and outsourcing.

“Non-college educated workers are primarily there to see to the care and comfort and security of the more affluent,” says Autor of service workers in these “superstar cities.”

“They have been reshuffled into these jobs that use arguably more generic skill sets. That’s why it’s hard for them to command high wages,” he says.

Sound familiar?

Sound a bit like… Savannah?

This job polarization is worst in the most super of the superstar cities, where job growth has been the strongest.

The data seems to be a bit of a repudiation of the old “a rising tide lifts all boats”

economic thesis, which experienced widespread acceptance as gospel in the 1990s.

Autor goes so far as to say that cities are “overrated” in economic terms — or overrated for adults without college degrees anyway, which is at least one out of every three American workers.

“For about a third of the country, cities are a lousy deal,” he says, concluding frankly that, “If you don’t have to be in a superstar city to do your job, you probably shouldn’t go.”

Generally, Autor is talking about truly large markets, such as New York, San Francisco, Boston, and Atlanta.

But I would argue that Savannah, despite our microscopic size compared to these behemoth metro areas, is an anomaly, and might actually belong on that list.

Our huge tourist presence and sizzlinghot brand are making Savannah a go-to destination for people moving here and investing here from all over the country, including from those much larger markets.

Simultaneously, we have seemingly permanent barriers to wealth and opportunity for a large portion of our population, in the midst of this lightning-fast growth.

We basically already had a two-tiered economy here, engrained and reinforced through generations of wealth disparity, insititional bias, and miserable public education, to name a few reasons.

It would behoove us for our leaders, whether elected or at the grassroots level, to not be blinded by the glint of gold-paved streets that can only be traveled by some of us. CS

It’s clear that costly, selfdestructive outcomes are being generated by these irresponsible U.S. policies that recklessly neglect science and disregard pivotal facts.

LEARN MORE about food insecurity issues in Savannah at the Enmarket Encourage Health Series on Tuesday.

The presenter, Desirae Suggs, is a former Peace Corps volunteer who chose to become a dietitian while volunteering in Costa Rica.

“It wasn’t my primary assignment, but I saw a lot,” explains Suggs. “We were in a pretty remote community, at least three miles from the nearest road, so that was an experience in itself. Living in a place where a lot of people have no concept of what constitutes a healthy meal, talking about balanced diets, you can’t eat rice every day, that kind of stuff was very interesting to me.”

Suggs coordinated a few educational opportunities there and knew it was something she wanted to pursue as a career.

“I wanted to study the psychology behind how we perceive food, how some people have access and some people don’t have access, and how we make the concept of healthy living available and easy to obtain for all people instead of just a certain group of people,” she says.

Upon her return, Suggs conducted a research study with local food pantries, soup kitchens, and Second Harvest here in Chatham County.

“I developed the questionnaire, and I used what’s called a Healthy Food Pantry Assessment Tool,” explains Suggs. “With that, I was able to assess the structure.

How is it set up? Is it meeting needs? For food quality, is it processed items or do they have access to produce? How close is it to the nearest transportation point, or is it walking distance? How do people get there? What kind of signage is available so people know this is a food pantry or soup kitchen or whatever the situation is? Do people have to fill out paperwork or show ID? What’s available—is it items on the shelf or is it brown bags?”

Suggs used that questionnaire and also spent some time serving to see the action firsthand.

“I found out that most people said, with the exception of just a few, that they thought the food pantry was meeting their needs to be fed,” says Suggs. “I didn’t go so much into the nutritional aspect of it, and that’s definitely an area for future research, but most people said they felt like they needs were met. And I think the food pantries did an awesome job of meeting

the basic need of serving people where they are, but the question goes back to, what is being fed?”

Suggs found that overall, specific dietary needs were not being met.

“They try to keep [the food] as uniform as possible, but if the salt content is really high, how does that affect someone with high blood pressure?” asks Suggs.

Another interesting thing Suggs discovered was the frequency with which the pantries were being used.

“Food pantries are designed to be used in emergency, like if I really need something or I may have fallen short with bills this month,” says Suggs, “but I found that 63 percent of food pantry clients are using it on a regular basis. I also found through Second Harvest that 17.1 percent of individuals used the Chatham County food pantry. These are all things to think about.

There are 175 different outlets, whether they be soup kitchens or food pantries, in the area and 49,830 people are using that.”

The conversation then, Suggs says, needs to be around donations.

“What are we giving?” she asks.

“Canned goods are not the worst thing you could serve, but are they the best thing you could serve to people that still need nutrition to function on a daily basis?”

Canned goods pose another question in our donation process. Families who are

just having a hard time financially may still have access to can openers, but homeless people probably wouldn’t be able to open a can without a pop-top.

“I think the big takeaway from the project is that guidelines have a place to be implemented within the food pantry and soup kitchen distribution outlets to give food to people,” says Suggs. “The volunteers really try to pack the bags as healthy as possible, but if there’s only bread and rice and potatoes available, that’s all they can put in the bag.”

Suggs’ talk will focus on being more mindful of how we help others with food insecurity issues.

“We have to avoid the idea of ‘beggars can’t be choosers,’” she says. “We have to be conscious that they’re people too and they deserve a valid meal like everybody else.” CS

Former Rape Crisis Center director announces blockbuster lawsuit, City Council candidacy within one-week period

IN A year beset by leadership departures at some of Savannah’s top institutions — Telfair Museums, Savannah Music Festival, the Philharmonic and City Hall, to name a few — the events around Kesha Gibson-Carter’s removal last year as head of the Savannah Rape Crisis Center were perhaps the most shocking and most indicative of larger problems.

In her role as an advocate, she was a tireless fighter. When she needed to, she literally held people’s hands, got no sleep,

squeezed documents out of stones, talked to anyone and everyone who wanted her ear and turned on either the warm laughter and small talk of a fast friend – or the cold legato and precise language of her criminal justice Master’s.

Perhaps part of it was simply the nature of her work on the front lines of sexual assault, something very personal and powerful, but people loved her in a way that made her firing hard to take.

What happened? For obvious reasons, Gibson-Carter has been tight lipped about it. But now she’s standing up for herself and for others in two very public settings.

On June 6, Gibson-Carter filed a lawsuit against Rape Crisis Center, District Attorney Meg Heap and several others,

alleging a racially-motivated conspiracy to remove her for essentially doing her job as an advocate.

Five days later, she declared her candidacy for Savannah City Council Aldermanat-Large Post 1, the seat currently held by Carol Bell.

Gibson-Carter says the timing was coincidental and wouldn’t comment on the lawsuit, only her campaign, which she launched in the park in front of her former high school building, now Savannah Arts Academy, then Savannah High School.

But the filing is there for everyone to see in federal court. And, according to the lawsuit, timing and City Council play a big part in why she thinks she was unfairly targeted.

The filing alleges that Gibson-Carter was doing fine, got excellent performance reviews, the whole nine yards, but then everything changed after she spoke before City Council in December 2017 about what she saw as flaws on the part of the District Attorney and her law enforcement partners in the arrest and prosecution of sexual assault offenders.

“This was a collective conspiracy – instigated and led by the government – against Ms. Gibson-Carter in retaliation for being an African American woman in a position of power and for leveraging that position to engage her First Amendment rights, speaking truth in order to educate the community,” it says. “The ring leader was Defendant Meg Heap.”

Heap is alleged to have strong-armed multiple parties into orchestrating Gibson-Carter’s removal. Carol Bell’s name also shows up in there.

The lawsuit describes Bell as having an interest in silencing Gibson-Carter on account of Bell’s relations with the woman who replaced Gibson-Carter at RCC and Bell’s relations with two RCC board members.

So some might conclude that her campaign is personal. But others might conclude that it follows the advice that Gibson-Carter is known to give: be true to yourself and others and don’t stand idle at injustice.

Yes, that’s my opinion. But it compliments another opinion: that this town is failing precisely because of behaviors suggested in Gibson-Carter’s suit.

All the great policies in the world won’t save Savannah from poor governance.

“There is no merit to this and I will vigorously defend myself and my office,” says Heap. “The RCC has always been, and remains, focused on the mission of the organization and the victims its serves,” says RCC board president Lynne Wolfe.

I’m sure Gibson-Carter would rather talk about other things, too. Like her campaign themes: crime reduction, living wages, affordable housing, small business and economic disparities.

“I want to provide leadership that our citizens can be proud of,” she says. “I want to transfer my skills in community services as they relate to city government.”

Whether she does that or not will be up to voters in November. CS

At this Thursday’s regular meeting, City Council is set to hear a public presentation on NewZo (New Zoning Ordinance), the much-anticipated overhaul of City of Savannah zoning regulations.

Following the public hearing, City Council will conduct two legally required readings, the first on July 2 and a second reading July 18 to officially vote on and adopt the new zoning code and map.

“Our zoning ordinance has never been overhauled to reflect the numerous changes that have occurred in the last 50 years,” says Planning and Urban Design Director Bridget Lidy.

“This proposal will simplify our zoning code and provide much needed updates to parcels of land that have seen their use change as Savannah has grown.”

The Executive Summary, found at www. newzo.org, says in part: “The City adopted a zoning ordinance in 1960. That core document, with many edits and additions, remains the standard set of requirements for development in the City. The result is a highly complex set of instructions that, in many cases, does not address 21st century development patterns or planning’s best practices,” it reads.

“Zoning categories in the current ordinance are often a poor fit for the historic building patterns in much of the City, creating thousands of nonconforming properties. Homeowners must frequently seek variances for routine matters like constructing a small addition to a residence,” it says.

“Developers of larger projects tend to gain approvals though an awkward mixture of variances and text amendments (many of them site-specific) that collectively erode public confidence in the integrity of the process.”

“In the half-century since Savannah established its current zoning ordinance, attitudes towards City planning and development have evolved immensely while the city has expanded to the south and west. In the older parts of the City, there is a clear desire to re-embrace the area’s mixed-use, walkable roots, but the current ordinance often mandates suburban standards,” says the summary.

“Providing parking is an important goal, for example, but it can be a considerable impediment to rehabilitating and re-occupying historic buildings. The City needs a new document that better reflects actual built conditions and the priorities of its residents.”

It’s important to note that if adopted as expected, NewZo will only affect the City of Savannah – Chatham County opted out of the process, though the countywide Metropolitan Planning Commission was intimately involved with helping craft NewZo.

Public invited to provide input on Alcohol Ordinances

The City of Savannah will hold two public meetings on Wednesday, June 19 & June 26 at 6 p.m. at the Liberty City Community Center at 1401 Mills B. Lane Blvd. to discuss Alcohol Density Overlay District Ordinance and the desire to establish a fourth overlay district in the 5th District.

“The Alcohol Density Overlay District was created to address the concentration of establishments engaging in the sale and or service of alcohol in specific identifiable areas that have contributed to undesirable conditions and activity like littering, loitering, aggressive panhandling, noise and increased vehicular traffic,” a City spokesperson says in a statement.

“Through the establishment of an alcohol overlay, standards are created to prevent these and other detrimental actions from diminishing property values and the quality of life for nearby residents and property owners.”

Most of the effort is concentrated in Savannah’s Fifth Aldermanic District, currently represented by Alderwoman Estella Shabazz.

The Chatham County Police Department’s Marine Patrol rescued four people after their boat took on water and submerged just before noon on June 15.

The incident happened in the Intracoastal Waterway at the Wilmington River.

“Three adults and one 13-year-old were on board the 19-foot Hydrosport when it began taking on water. Chatham County Marine Patrol Units were on scene minutes after the distress call. When they arrived, the boat was on its side and almost completely submerged. Three people were in the water,” police report.

The Philly Voice reported on June 5 that a resident of White Haven, Pennsylvania, has solved the mystery of why that state has experienced more tornadoes than usual this year. The unnamed amateur meteorologist called WNEP’s “Talkback 16,” which allows locals to opine on the issues of the day, and left a voicemail on May 31. A 47-year-old resident of southern Israel approached a teller at a Postal Bank branch in mid-May, handing her a note that read, “Hand over the money in the drawer” (misspelling the Hebrew word for “drawer”), The Times of Israel reported.

As the teller hesitated, he said, “Put the money in the bag quickly or I’ll throw this grenade,” referring to a black object in his right hand. The teller gave him $4,450 in cash, and he left. Five days later, he repeated his method at another branch, where he netted $3,300. A 16-year-old driver was pulled over by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Manitobaon June 6 after being clocked driving 105 mph, according to Fox News.

The teenager was driving a Chevrolet Camaro, but it wasn’t the muscle car that made him go so fast, he said. He told police he had just eaten hot chicken wings and really needed to use the bathroom. Officers were unmoved, however, tweeting, “Absolutely #noexcuses for that kind of speed.”

Little Tybee plays inaugural public event at Victory North.

EXPERIMENTAL GROUP Little Tybee, known for fusing progressive music with folk rock and psychedelia, is getting ready to help usher in a new era of live music in Savannah with the launch of Victory North. The venue, designed to be both a live music hall and a wedding venue, is the mid-level music destination that many have been waiting for, and Little Tybee is just one of a slew of acts slated to take the stage over the next several months.

Ahead of their performance, we spoke to bandleader Brock Scott about their music and the exciting gig.

Let’s get this out there first - tell me where the band name came from?

Scott: I grew up in Savannah, on Whitmarsh. Ryan Donald, our bassist, also grew up there. We went to Savannah Arts Academy for high school. So it’s kind of a way for us to keep our roots, even though we all moved to Atlanta. It was just a way for us to pay homage to our upbringing.

What was your musical upbringing, so to speak? I’m curious as to how you ended up in this progressive, experimental world the band lives in.

We all have different musical tastes. I’d say Josh, our guitarist, is the reason we have that kind of progressive following.

Ryan and I, when we were living in Savannah, would play with this band called The Roundtables. It was kind of in that emo era, so it was a little bit heavier - sort of

prog and emo. There was kind of a heavier style of music going on at that time.

The music scene was kind of interesting at that time - a lot of bands would play at the local YMCA and stuff.

A little more DIY. Yeah, Savannah’s always been DIY. We’ve always needed one of those spaces that was a little bit larger and professional, but we never really had it. So we just always created it wherever we could. That’s what’s cool about this new place - Georgia-grown, local promoters who are really trying to push the music scene down there.

This show is kind of a culmination of our contacts in Atlanta, Athens, and Savannah coming together. I feel really honored that they want us to be a part of that christening. I’m excited to be one of the first bands to play there and kick off what I think is going to be a great thing for Savannah.

Having done four records and lots of touring since 2009, do you feel like there’s been an evolution in the band so far that you can identify?

Yeah! We’ve done four studio records as Little Tybee, but a bunch of other music projects with the same group of people. I think Little Tybee is kind of rare in that we’ve been a collective group that have been playing together for a long time, so we kind of write knowing what the other members are going to do.

You learn a little bit. The first few

records we recorded ourselves, and then as we got more mature we decided to start working in other studios. You just kind of pick up little tricks as you’re working with other engineers. I think we just matured in our writing and recording process by just doing it so much, but also exposing ourselves to as many different types of music and ways of recording as possible. To not pigeonhole ourselves and really look for inspiration anywhere we can find it.

Are you guys working on anything new? What’s in the pipeline for y’all?

Yeah, this show will be the first of a twoweek run we’re doing up to Boston and back. We’ll be doing a bunch of new songs, we have some fun covers, and we’ll actually be bringing down a jazz guitarist from New York named Rotem. He’s going to jump on stage with us.

But yeah, we’re definitely all figuring out a bunch of life stuff right now. We’re not 18 anymore, so touring’s a little harder. We have to be more strategic about it. We still love playing live. Whenever we do, we’re very specific about where we want to go and the markets where we know we have a huge fan base in. That’s why Savannah had to be on the list.

There’s something special about playing for Savannahians. I don’t think enough music gets down there, so I think it’s important to come down and say hello. CS

RANDY DAVIS, a beloved local business owner note for his charitable and caring nature, needs the help of his community.

That’s where Save Randy Davis, an organization started by friends to help offset the cost of medical bills throughout Davis’ struggle with acute renal failure, comes in.

The organization has already done several events around the city to benefit Davis, and the upcoming RandyPalooza concert at Coach’s Corner on Sat., June 22 is sure to be a major success.

Featuring a stellar lineup of local bands, raffles, auctions, BBQ, and fun, the all-day affair has been made possible due to the generous donations of vendors, artists, and local businesses.

Their generosity has ensured that money from RandyPalooza will go to Davis’ medical expenses 100 percent. “[Randy] is a local fellow, born and raised in Savannah. For the 20 years that I’ve known him, he’s been the most cheerful, positive, outgoing, and overwhelmingly generous man that I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting,” friend and Save Randy Davis founder Dan Foulds tells Connect.

“I was active in the Alee Shrine for several years, and we used to do golf tournaments. He’d always come and play in our tournaments to raise money for children.

I actually personally witnessed him win $2,500 in a 50/50 raffle—and mind you, this is not a wealthy guy. He stands up and looks around the room and goes, ‘How about if I just donate that money back?’”

Foulds says he’s seen Davis’ charitable nature in action countless times, and now it’s time to give back to him. Davis owns Davis produce, a local produce stand, and isn’t currently able to do the work that provides an income for his family.

“He went into acute renal failure, total kidney failure, several months ago. And that laid him out. He really got laid low,” Foulds says.

“His kidney function is zero. He’s on dialysis, but he was starting so far back that he’s having a hard time adapting to the dialysis. That severely impacts the amount of money that he can make for the business. They’ve taken a hit for that. When

they were looking at health insurance, they had to make a decision - ‘Are we going to make our house payment, or are we going to pay for health insurance?’ That’s a sad fact of the way the health insurance business is working in America now.”

The objective for Save Randy Davis is simple—they want to help sustain Davis and his family in their time of need.

“The community has risen up unbelievably for this family,” Foulds says.

The June 22 event at Coach’s Corner will feature a lineup of local artists including DRAUCKER, Jason Courtenay & the Hazard Co. Band, Damon & the Shitkickers, and more. There’ll be BBQ, games, and auctions - all in the name of helping a good man as he fights an unimaginable fight.

“Jason Courtenay goes out and calls all of his [musician] friends, and they said, ‘We’re coming and you’re not paying us a

penny.’ John Henderson has volunteered [Coach’s Corner], and he is volunteering the dinner. There is no fee. Every single dollar from this event goes to the Davis family,” Foulds says.

Foulds gets emotional when talking about Davis’ struggle, but says that he’s floored by how the community has rallied around one of their own so far.

“This has been a great experience, and a lot of people have been amazing,” he says.

“When you’re at a Save Randy Davis event, you have a good time. And you walk out of there with a heart full of joy. It’s Savannah stepping up and being the best Savannah there is. I’m really proud to be a part of it.”

DAN BERMAN IS an encyclopedia of knowledge when it comes to music in general, but even more so with the music of the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia. He’s become known for playing with the Charlie Fog Band, an impassioned tribute to the legendary group. Now, he’s taking that a step further with Cats Under the Stars—a tribute to the Jerry Garcia Band.

Known for their reimagining of soul and R&B songs, as well as originals that were outside of the realm of the Dead, the Jerry Garcia Band was a passion project for the iconic guitarist and songwriter up until his passing.

Cats Under the Stars is set to stage a JGB tribute at the Tybee Post Theater on June 22, and we spoke to Berman ahead of the show.

I have to admit to not being very aware of the Jerry Garcia Band prior to this interview, so it’s been fun discovering this side of his musical interests. What was the impetus to launch a tribute to this band?

Berman: Well, I’m in Charlie Fog Band, which of course is the Grateful Dead tribute here in Savannah. The A.A. synagogue on Lee Boulevard, off Abercorn, that’s my synagogue—they approached me a year ago about an annual fundraising gala they have every year.

They have a band perform, and they wanted the Charlie Fog Band. Of course I wanted to help them out, but I didn’t necessarily think that was the right venue for a full-blown psychedelic Grateful Dead show.

I kind of came up with this idea because I wanted to do it for the fundraiser. The Jerry band thing came up because obviously I’m very familiar with it. I started thinking—Smokey Robinson, Peter Tosh, Bob Dylan, old ballads from Irving Berlin; the way he arranged their songs I thought would be perfect.

So I reached out to our drummer and bass player, we got a keyboard player, and Laiken Williams actually started out with us. She, of course, is just incredible.

We did the synagogue gig and it went over really well, and next thing you know we had a couple of opportunities. It kind of went on from there.

The interesting thing about this stuff is that there was one proper studio

album under the Jerry Garcia Band name, and a few under a solo moniker.

Yeah, there were a few studio albums.

He had Reflections, there was a self-titled studio album, and then Cats Under the Stars. And some of the musicians on those albums were probably some of the Dead guys. But he had this band for 22 years.

When he wasn’t doing Dead tours, he was playing with this band.

What’s so fascinating is that he apparently regarded Cats Under the Stars as his favorite album and his proudest project. Which is incredible given the fact that even he’d admit to how under the radar it was!

I think that’s his M.O., though! [laughs] Why do you think something like this wouldn’t have fared quite as well commercially?

I was very fortunate to not only see the Grateful Dead in concert a bunch, but I’ve been very fortunate to have seen Jerry Garcia Band as well. From my personal perspective, it seems to me that this band is basically Jerry’s interpretation of how he thinks music works. The Grateful Dead

thing was a phenomenon, but if you went to a Jerry Garcia Band concert—he’d be playing a song like “That Lucky Old Sun,” which most people probably remember as a country kind of thing. And he turns it into this incredible gospel-tinged ballad.

I think it was about him saying, “These are songs that I love that are great songs.”

When he played with the Dead, it was more of a collaboration. He was soloing off of what everyone else in the band was doing.

With this band, he could bring a song in and say, “This is what I want to do with the arrangement.” He was able to articulate his personal perspective on music through the Jerry Garcia band.

Why wasn’t it as commercially successful? Well, I saw him at The Spectrum— there’s 12,000 people there to see him at The Spectrum and he’s up there playing a Gershwin tune. Everybody in the building was there, as always, for the music.

And that’s what it all boiled down to.

Commercial success, often times, is not always about the music. CS

NEW YORK ROCKERS Wake The Sun have been impressing audiences with their blues-infused brand of rock and roll, which directly challenges the perpetuated myth that rock is dead.

The band, which focuses on vocal power and classic-sounding guitar riffs, is coming to The Jinx on Mon., June 24 for a good old fashioned rock show, and we spoke to guitarist and vocalist Dillon Mealey ahead of the gig.

I’m curious, given the frustrating stigma about rock music that exists so often in the mainstream - what compelled you to want to start a band like this?

Are you always thinking about the next project? What does the cycle typically look like for you guys at this point?

Recently I’ve had a flooding of ideas. I’m the main songwriter, and usually songs come in waves. It’ll be, like, three or four songs at a time and almost like lyrical vomit. Recently I’ve been having a bout of that, which is cool because we’re getting ready to get back in the studio and record more stuff.

It depends on circumstance - there’ll be times when I’ll lay in bed about to go to sleep and all of the sudden think, “Oh! That’s a good idea.” I’ll jump out of bed and grab my guitar and record it. My fiancee loves that [laughs].

Is it typically lyrics first, then?

Mealey: It definitely depends on the song.

Generally it’ll be the riff or music. I’ll have the idea for guitar, bass, and drums and then fit in the lyrics like a puzzle. Other times, I’ll really want to focus on a certain message or convey a certain thing - then lyrics will come first. CS

Dustin Price hones his craft in Savannah

Singer/songwriter headlines El Rocko a year after moving to town

SINGER/SONGWRITER Dustin Price landed here by way of Mobile, Alabama, roughly a year ago ready to explore a new city and make his musical mark.

Having released some EPs and songs prior to moving, as well as lending his talents to bands like God Bless Relative, Price was a seasoned writer and performer upon arrival. Having lived in Savannah for a year now, though, he feels that his writing has been impacted by the city.

“It’s definitely changed my perspective on everything,” Price, who headlines El Rocko Lounge on Fri., June 21, tells Connect.

“Getting out of the hometown climate is always nice. But it’s similar enough to where it felt familiar when I showed up.

Savannah’s my favorite town that I’ve found so far, so that’s made it a lot easier to try and find myself. That’s the whole shtick, I guess. Self discovery through a bunch of introspective, sad [songs].”

Price’s songs are introspective, and often emotionally honest. He started writing songs several years ago, inspired by a Bruce Springsteen concert he attended.

“I was a sleepy little sad boy,” he jokes when recalling his initial musical influences, which include Bon Iver and Coheed and Cambria. “I went to a Springsteen show in 2014 and kind of got reborn into what I’m doing now.”

After that show, he wrote and recorded a few EPs that he says he’s been keeping “secret from everybody, because there’s a bunch of made up songs about girls and being sad.”

Price admits he’s not a very “rigid” songwriter in terms of discipline, but says that he works at his craft when he does sit down to write.

“It feels like work, but in a good way,” he explains. “Folks think, ‘Oh, it’s just going to show up. I don’t have to do any work!’

You can have a great idea out of nowhere, and it’ll come to you from the ether. But you have to work to get the best [results] you can.”

Whereas in the past he’d let a stalled song idea or slow-moving lyric get the best of him, these days Price says he’s able to recognize the importance of letting things happen as they’re meant to.

“I freak out, but then I take it easy and realize, ‘Oh wow, I’m holding a good thing but I’m gripping it too tightly.’”

Price says he experienced an “‘Oh shit, I’m going to die’ moment,” which pushed him to write deeper and address subjects like mortality.

“It’s all, kind of wrestling with mortality. Diving in there, seeing it, and calling it out for what it is,” he says. “But hopefully, at the end of the day, there’s some hope in there.” CS

SURELY you know Peter Roberts from his tireless work with Location Gallery, but you may not be as familiar with the art he creates.

Now, Roberts’ own work takes center stage with “If Only: Papercut Paradoxical Paradises,” on view at the Savannah LGBT Center now through July 26.

Roberts’ impossibly intricate paper-cut pieces line the walls in the front space.

Roberts is no stranger to curating that space. Since the LGBT Center opened two years ago, Location Gallery has exhibited art from local artists there.

“This is my first solo show in three years,” says Roberts. “I was just doing HeadCase work in other places, and last December we had the tree show at Location, so I did a piece and titled it, ‘Donut Orchard, If Only #14.’ So then people were like, ‘What’s number ten?’ and I was like, I’ll get back to you.”

The curiosity of what could be inspired Roberts to create more pieces along that 22 theme.

“It started this process for me of tying together conversations or stuff that would pop in my head or people passing by and saying something,” says Roberts.

“It would morph into this odd idea in the whole theme of, ‘If only…’ If only we had breakfast bushes. If only we had retractable hydro pants. I wanted to do sort of a happy show. I was thinking about the crazy time we live in. Let’s look at something positive.”

The positivity of the show speaks to Roberts’ personal style.

“It is somewhat autobiographical in some sense, but I also wanted to have a good grasp of the color balance and the graphic narrative,” says Roberts. “It was sort of fun to use different stocks of paper—some of them are matte, some of them are shiny, some of them have a leather surface. There’s a little more play as far as that, and I wanted to create this tension.”

The combination of materials does create that visual tension Roberts wanted for the show. His work employs fine lines that almost seem impossible, and thicker materials pair well with those lines.

“It’s all hand-drawn and vectored first, so I can keep that solid line,” says Roberts.

cutter, which does an adequate job, but I still have to go in with micro-shears and lots of X-acto blades to get that really crisp line.”

Through his papercuts, Roberts seeks to show people the infinite ways paper can be used.

“It’s like, ‘Yeah, it’s paper. This is what you can do with paper,’” says Roberts. “It’s coming into its own as an art form. It’s always been an art form, but now I think the technology and ideation and the scope of paper products available.”

Speaking of materials available, all of Roberts’ paper comes from a German company with a completely green footprint.

“Even the metallic paper is green, and it has this groove to it, so I can turn the pieces and get movement just from the papers,” says Roberts. “It does a lot of its own work for me.”

As meticulous as Roberts is in creating his papercuts, he’s just as meticulous in planning his time to work on art.

“I’m actually pretty good about scheduling my time out. I structure it out—‘Okay, I’ve got a day here, so I can do all this part,’” he explains. “There’s nothing more inspiring than a deadline, right? In all of my advertising, it was deadline after deadline. I’m probably more geared working in

that process. But, if you look at my work, I’m basically a serial artist; I have series.

I bounce back and forth between four or five, and I can kind of compartmentalize when I want to do that particular subject.

If you saw the paper list, it’s insane. I’m such a list-maker, but it keeps me focused on what needs to be done next.”

At the same time as “If Only,” Roberts also hosts “Happiness Is…” at Location Gallery at Austin Hill Realty. The show is inspired by Peanuts and features a strong roster of Savannah artists, in true Location Gallery style.

“I’d always tooled around with the idea of having a Peanuts-inspired show,” remembers Roberts. “I’m thinking, ‘Is Peanuts just my generational thing?

What’s the impact? Do people still like it?’ I ran it by AJ Perez [of Sulfur Studios] randomly and he was like, ‘Dude, that’s so cool.’ I was able with that show to track it out and ask different people and get feedback. That gives the artists time to ruminate on what they wanted to do, and it shows—it’s a killer show.” CS “If Only” is on display at Location Gallery at the LGBT Center, 1515 Bull St., through July 26. FOR painter Pedro Covo, all his work begins in the sketchbook.

Originally from Cartagena, on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, Covo traveled the world with an illustration job before coming to SCAD to pursue his love of painting.

Through his travels, Covo always stays true to his origin, creating work that is Colombian and Caribbean in nature.

We spoke with Covo last week.

1. How did you come to be in Savannah?

2. What was the transition like from illustrating to painting?

The medium was kind of the same. I was working with acrylics and oils, but a lot of digital work too. Right now, it’s a little bit the opposite. Sometimes I do a digital sketch really quick, then go and paint. [At my previous job] I did acrylic and then moved into digital and finished in digital. It’s kind of the same process, but backwards.

Everything starts in the sketchbook for me. It’s more or less the same process. The main difference is that I’m not illustrating anyone else’s story but my story. It’s a double-edged sword. It’s easier to do someone else’s story. To figure out what makes your story yours and what it is that you can tell

is a little bit of work itself. It’s a lot of writing and a lot of reading to get there.

It’s what I wanted to do. I turned 30 and thought to myself, “I don’t have any kids or anything, so if I don’t try to do this right now, I don’t think I will have a moment later in life where I can pursue this.

3. How has traveling informed your artistic practice?

I think traveling for me worked to put in perspective where I come from. When getting to know a new place, you know more what the things you take for granted, and you realize things are different and what makes the place where you are from, the culture you come from, different from everything else.

That’s my work. Wherever I am, it doesn’t matter if I’m here or anywhere, I’m painting a Colombian painting, or a Caribbean painting. Of course, traveling helps you figure out what it is that makes a Caribbean painting a Caribbean painting.

I don’t know if I’m successful or not but that’s what I’m aiming for [laughs].

4. Let’s talk about your work and how it’s evolved.

I was working on swimmers for maybe

two, three years. This was just the mundane life in the Caribbean. Everything is around the ocean. So I started doing the paintings and it became a very serious business at the end. I spent almost four years painting people swimming before I arrived at SCAD. I tried to move on to something else.

The portraits [I do now] are me trying to figure out what to do at SCAD that was different from what I was doing before. I cannot just sit down and think and come up with something. I have to work and work and figure out where I’m going along the way.

It’s been one year since I started doing portraits in my sketchbook. I can spend three months without painting a canvas, but I have to paint or draw in my sketchbook. I was just drawing and realized that I was just drawing my friends here, the people I spend time with here in Savannah. Honestly, my life here in Savannah is all day in my studio and maybe at night I’ll go to a bar and have a drink with the same people. I try to sit down with people and spend a few hours with them and make a live painting out of this interaction.

Most recently, I’ve been doing more mundane situations and trying to get a grasp on these quotidian life situations that you take for granted sometimes. I

come from an illustration background, so I like to tell stories somehow. I’m just trying to be honest with who I am and where I come from, and trying to produce honest work based on my life.

5. What’s next for you?

I graduate by the end of the year. I am not looking forward to it. I would be in school forever if I could. I love being in school, the environment of people with the same interest. I think I get more out of my peers than I get from anything else. I try to steal everything I like from everybody here. It’s a lot of people working and it’s a great energy.

After being here, I definitely want to pursue a teaching situation because it’s just a way to get involved in that environment again. I feel like with the current political situation here in the U.S., I would prefer to move on, but I would not discard the possibility of staying here if I got a good job offer. As much as I love Savannah, I want to always remember this city with the feeling of my time here as a student.

I don’t want to burn it out. Usually when I talk to people who have lived here for a long time, I listen to a lot of complaints. I really enjoy this town. CS

I worked for ten years as an illustrator before coming to SCAD. I graduated from my undergrad in 2011 and worked for a French-Canadian agency. They had me travel a lot. The work was pretty good, but I was still doing editorial mostly, and it wasn’t what I was expecting from the illustration world. I was more happy doing my paintings during the weekends, but I couldn’t fully commit to it, so I quit in 2017 and tried to make a life as a painter, which is a very big step into the abyss.

I always wanted to be a painter, but I was afraid of the uncertainty of the job, so I decided to apply to a few schools. I was living basically all over before coming here.

Every six months I was moving somewhere else. It was great—that’s the best part of the job. It is emotionally exhausting because you have to meet new people every place you go.

Squirrel’s

set for Starland THE Starland District is getting its very own pizza place.

Squirrel’s opens this Friday at 2218 Bull St. The owner and chef, Chris Dickerson, comes to Savannah from Jacksonville, Florida.

Chef Dickerson has created a menu that’s at once complex and approachable.

All the pizzas are fired with pecan wood and feature diverse ingredients.

Connect was lucky enough to get a preview of the exciting new menu, and we spoke with Chef Dickerson about it last week.

What sets your restaurant, and your pizza, apart from others?

Neither the restaurant nor the pizza is authentic to any particular style. I think of authenticity as being authentic to myself— my experiences, my travels, and what I’m feeling now. Our pizza has less water than Neapolitan, and it’s cooked for longer. It also conveys a sense of place; utilizing Southern pecan wood, rather than the traditional oak. We also stick to mostly American ingredients, not Italian.

Tell me about the thought behind the menu. How long did you spend planning it? What was your approach to the creation process like?

Our guiding principle is to make food that is delicious. We don’t care about winning any awards or impressing other chefs.

No pretense. No boundaries. We want to always evolve, always improve, and always question whether or not there’s a better way. Most wood fired pizza restaurants follow a rigid set of standards, in an attempt to adhere to Neapolitan traditions.

That has created a real opportunity, in my opinion, to explore methods and ingredients which usurp the dogma. The zeitgeist of Italian cuisine is hyper local. It doesn’t make sense, then, that I would ship flour and tomatoes 5,000 miles when I can source amazing tomatoes from the U.S. Our flour is milled in North Carolina and is non-GMO and very consistent.

I don’t really “plan” a menu. Every time I eat out, I get new ideas—even if it’s

It looks like you partner with a lot of local purveyors. How did you choose which ones to use, and why is local sourcing important?

what flavor combinations not to combine.

Sometimes I’ll get an idea from seemingly random places. For example, I have all kinds of citrus trees at my house—blood orange, Meyer lemon and yuzu. I might walk by a flowering yuzu plant while I’m drinking a red wine that smells a bit like blackberries. If the smell combination is intriguing, the taste combination would likely be also. I just always try to be as in touch with my senses as I can be and tune out the noise of other people saying, “You gotta do this,” or “You need to do that.”

Do you have plans to expand the menu as Squirrel’s settles in, or will you run with a fixed menu?

We’re really going to listen to our customers, not dictate what they should want or have. I can tell you though, if I’m not proud of it or if I wouldn’t consume it, we won’t serve it. I’ll never apologize for that.

No high fructose corn syrup. Nothing hydrogenated.

We would love to buy everything local, though it’s not as practical as it should be.

It’s hard to explain to guests that if we were to only buy local, they wouldn’t have salad for about 4 months each year. They wouldn’t have tomatoes for even longer.

Local just tastes better. Would you rather have a tomato that’s shipped 2,000 miles in a refrigerated truck with tons of discordant produce, or buy one that’s ripened on the vine a few miles from where you live, picked the day before you eat it?

Local vegetables, basically, have more time to ripen and develop before you eat them.

Revisiting the Central Park Five

Ken Burns doc screens at Beach Institute this Thursday

Tell me about this documentary.

It’s under the auspices of PBS, and we told them we wanted to use the film under the fair use doctrine. They were really enthusiastic about it because of what we’ve seen with the “When They See Us” documentary. Ken Burns is a famed documentarian, and he decided to take this one on. At the time, it was far enough away from the event so people could actually look at and reflect on what happened when it happened in 1989.

Not to age myself, but I wasn’t alive in 1989, so to hear about the Central Park Five years later was jarring.

It may not even feel real, right? The thing is, the event as it’s come to be seen was not the first time we had experienced that as a country. Phenomena like that go back, as least as far as people remember, to the Scottsboro boys in 1931, and in the 1960s there was a similar incident called the Harlem Six, which was eerily similar in details as well. [They’re] all cases in which young African-American males were wrongfully convicted and ultimately exonerated.

That’s why I think these documentaries

are important, because for those of us who either weren’t around when it happened or were around but too young to really take it in, the documentaries really give us an opportunity to expose ourselves to a factual event when we have the benefit of retrospect, whereas people living at the time didn’t have it.

I’m looking forward to the discussion after this documentary because I know a lot of the people would have seen Ava DuVernay’s version, so I expect there to be a good amount of comparison and contrast and people talking about what was included here versus what was included there.

As of press time, you haven’t seen Ken Burns’ documentary yet, but how do you think these two adaptations will interact with each other?

As near as I can tell, they touch on a lot of the same themes in terms of what it says about our system and what it says generally about people when they’re in a heightened state of awareness and attitudes.

They both shine a spotlight on what can happen when you’re almost in a mob-type environment. When you’re in that environment, anything can happen. Principles of justice get trampled. Penalties become exacerbated.

With Central Park Five, one interesting fact is they were all teenagers. One was tried as an adult—he was 16, which, again, is another issue we have today, which is the prosecution of minors as adults. It says a lot about society. It’s a cautionary tale, and it tells us from where we come so we can compare to where we are and how much work we have to do.

It looks like we have a lot of work to do with the criminal justice system.

One of the things we hope comes out of showing this film and films like it is that in addition to what we people take away from the discussion, we hope they also take away a commitment to educating themselves. This is just related to the whole issue of criminal justice reform that’s been in the news. We had the Innocence Project and all these things focused on improving administration of criminal justice in the country. My view is that we don’t necessarily need reform as much as we need a complete overhaul.

The other thing, too, is that as the general public, most of us don’t have close regular contact with the criminal justice system, and that’s a good thing, of course, for the individuals involved. But for society as a whole, it’s not the greatest thing because it’s a closed door. We have no interest in opening the door, no idea what’s going on behind it, until we’re personally impacted and we start to become aware.

For the most part, people are appalled. But films like this open the door and allow people to put a toe in and then see if they want to go further.

The United States has the most incarcerated persons of any nation on Earth. We’re on par with China in terms of proportion.

It’s just not a good look. It’s about awareness—people need to know.

One of the interesting statistics that came out of the Innocence Project is, they state that 88 percent of DNA-exonerated minors who were tried as adults were black. 88 percent! We should all be concerned about that.

That’s an unacceptable statistic.

Here’s the thing. The system is obviously not perfect, and perhaps no system is.

You’re probably always going to get some innocent people. Looking at the entire system and saying, “We’re starting from scratch,” how would you design it? The whole notion of locking people up and putting them into cages for massive amounts of time and the idea that some of those people by the time they’re in their 50s and have been in jail for 10 years and have another 20 years, the odds of them being a danger to somebody is just ridiculously low. We need to step back and say, “Okay, what’s the logic of just locking people up?”

What are we really trying to protect? Is it even financially sensible?

Here’s another interesting thing. African-Americans, in a sense, are often like the canary in the mineshaft. You look at a situation and see it’s not working and it’s particularly harsh or damaging to African-American people. A lot of times, that becomes the impetus for reform and changes that actually benefit the entire society.

You can go through everything in terms of civil rights, in terms of public education—all those were initiatives that people perceived as, “Okay, these people are particularly suffering because of our current setup, we need to change it.” And as a result of that, things get better. I suspect this will be one of the situations. CS

IT’S BEEN thirty years since the Central Park jogger case that upended the nation.

Five teenagers—four black, one Latino— were wrongfully convicted of the assault and rape of a white woman in Central Park. They spent time in jail and had their charges dropped only after another man was correctly identified as the rapist in 2002.

The case has regained attention thanks to Ava DuVernay’s series on Netflix, “When They See Us,” but legendary documentarian Ken Burns also made a film on the five young men.

“The Central Park Five” came out in 2012, and the Beach Institute will show it this Thursday as part of their film and discussion series.

Ron Christopher, the chairman of the board of the King-Tisdell Cottage Foundation, shared a little more about the screening last week.

MEN IN BLACK: INTERNATIONAL

OO (2 out of four) The Dead Don’t Die is the name of the latest offering from writer-director Jim Jarmusch, but it also serves as the rallying cry for Hollywood executives who are unable to let long-dormant franchises go quietly into the night.

“You’ll have to pry this tentpole from my dead, cold hands!” bleats one studio suit after another, and the proof is there on the screen.

Occasionally, the long gestation period doesn’t lead to tragedy (e.g. Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Mad Max: Fury Road, and I liked both Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Prometheus; so sue me), but in other instances, the result is something on the dismal order of Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles (yes, that’s an actual movie), Independence Day: Resurgence, and the truly grotesque A Good Day to Die Hard.

In the case of the Men in Black brand, we’ve been down this road before. The so-so Men in Black 3 arrived in 2012, a full decade after the depressing Men in Black II and 15 years after the delightful original.

Fast forward seven years, and now there’s Men in Black: International, which is not only missing Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones but also any semblance of substance, style or smarts.

In this outing, the new recruit is Molly (Tessa Thompson), who was looking the other way as a child when a neuralyzer wiped clean her parents’ awareness of the MIB organization (if you have to ask what a neuralyzer is, then this series isn’t for you).

Now an adult, she continues to seek out this clandestine outfit and finally locates it, a lifelong trek that impresses an MIB head (Emma Thompson) enough that she allows Molly to become an agent on a probationary status.

Dubbed Agent M, Molly is sent to serve in the London branch, headed by Agent High T (Liam Neeson). She latches onto Agent H (Chris Hemsworth), a once-great operative whose recklessness and laissezfaire attitude have turned him into something of an office joke.

But H has to bring his A game to his latest assignment, which requires him to protect an important interplanetary dignitary. He fails, of course — the e.t. ends up assassinated, but not before entrusting Agent M with a MacGuffin that’s being sought by a pair of shape-shifting aliens (Laurent and Larry Bourgeois, collectively known as the French hip-hop dancers Les Twins).

One mishap leads to another, and the two agents find themselves bouncing all over the globe, picking up a diminutive alien sidekick along the way. Nicknamed Pawny (and voiced by Kumail Nanjiani), he proves to be a valuable asset as H & M are forced to contend with duplicity at every

turn — not only from unfriendly aliens but from (gasp!) a traitor lurking within the MIB ranks.

The identity of the turncoat is so obvious that my 10-week-old daughter could doubtless figure it out between naps, but then again, such lazy scripting is par for the course in an assembly-line sequel such as this one.

In the original Men in Black, the fun was in being granted access into the worlds of all these extra-terrestrial entities living here on Earth — the plot was sturdy enough but hardly the primary focus of the piece. The opposite is true here: The filmmakers seem to think the storyline is the hook, when it’s just so much nonsense.

Unfortunately, they’re so busy zipping through its predictable beats that they largely neglect the alien cultures, offering them only as fleeting diversions.

Hemsworth and Thompson built up so much audience goodwill from their previous collaboration in Thor: Ragnarok that viewers will be satisfied by their antics here, with Thompson largely playing straight (wo)man and Hemsworth coasting on his goofy charm.

A real casting coup would have been to hire Mark Ruffalo, the third side of the Thor: Ragnarok triangle, to voice Pawny, but Nanjiani nevertheless does what he can with his slate of tired quips.

As for the rest, it’s inoffensive piffle, the sort one can expect from a pre-programmed summer blockbuster wanna-be.

There’s one effective chapter that’s set on an island and features Rebecca Ferguson as a three-armed arms dealer, and fans of the previous installment’s Frank the Pug will appreciate his brief cameo here.

Otherwise, the rest is instantly forgettable — no neuralyzer required.

SHAFT

OO The 2000 Shaft was an update of the 1971 Shaft, with Samuel L. Jackson playing the nephew of the iconic private dick made famous by Richard Roundtree. The new Shaft isn’t another reboot or remake but a follow-up to the 2000 Shaft, which makes one wonder why it wasn’t called Shaft 2, Shaft’s Big Score! (the name of the first sequel to the ’71 original), The Return of Shaft or even Fifty Shades of Shaft.

Then again, perhaps the moniker is meant as a reminder that the first Shaft appeared in the early 1970s, when “political correctness” and “woke” had yet to be invented (or at least perfected).

In other words, this is a retrograde Shaft, full of the sort of eyebrow-raising antics that nobody aside from Clint Eastwood can get away with anymore. Jackson isn’t playing John Shaft as much as he’s playing Fred G. Sanford — he’s more Redd Foxx than Richard Roundtree, insulting everyone around him and not caring who gets offended.

Jessie T. Usher co-stars as Shaft’s son, JJ Shaft. He drinks coconut water and is hesitant to utter the word “pussy,” so Dad naturally assumes he’s gay. But despite their bickering, the pair team up to figure out who murdered JJ’s childhood friend and why.

Along the way, they’re joined by the original Shaft (Roundtree), who’s now revealed in one throwaway line of dialogue to actually be Jackson/Shaft’s father rather than his uncle.

Shaft is a throwback to the types of characters once played by the likes of John Wayne and Robert Mitchum. He’s brash, confident and fearless, and he believes that “a woman wants a man who’s a man.”

The regressive sexual politics are somewhat countered by the presence of Regina Hall as Shaft’s no-nonsense ex-wife Maya, a woman who disapproves of his line of work, his womanizing ways (when confronted with his latest squeezes, she addresses them as “Madame Chlamydia” and “Lady Syphilis”), and his attitude toward JJ (past Christmas presents for his teenage son included a stack of porn magazines and a box of condoms). Of course, when push comes to shoot, even Maya recognizes that Shaft is good to have around.

The story structure is sloppy and the “gay panic” gags are painfully unfunny, but what makes this Shaft tick is the allin performance by Jackson. He’s not only dynamic on his own but also establishes an agreeable repartee with Usher.

It’s also a kick to see Roundtree reprising his signature role, and he even gets to play a variation of the classic “never bring a knife to a gunfight” routine.

Tolerance of Shaft’s coarseness will of course vary, but there’s always a chance you’ll have a reasonably good time in the moment but hate yourself in the morning.

LATE NIGHT

OOO Katherine Newberry (Emma Thompson) may have made history as the first female late-night talk-show host, but that doesn’t mean she’s untouchable. Refusing to pepper her opening monologues with anything remotely controversial and content to book distinguished guests (authors, politicians) rather than idiotic ones (the latest YouTube starlets), she learns that her ratings are in steady decline and she faces being kicked off her own show.

Her likely replacement? A misogynistic, xenophobic clod (Ike Barinholtz), naturally.

Katherine also has been criticized for having a staff of writers comprised solely of white, heterosexual men. Balking at the suggestion that she hates women, she agrees to add a female to the ranks.

The unlikely pick is Molly Patel (Mindy Kaling), who has no experience with writing or with comedy (she comes from a job at a Pennsylvania chemical plant).

Late Night has a premise that sounds iffy and opportunistic, and the skimming-thesurface trailer certainly did it no favors.

Happily, the picture proves to be both intelligent and insightful, moving beyond the jokes (and they’re actually good ones) to address the issue of women in the workplace trenches.

Kaling wrote the script, and she not only handed herself a plum role but made sure to spread the wealth. The show’s male

writers aren’t portrayed as one mass blob but are instead individualized, leading to some choice vignettes as well as some unexpected reversals of character.

Kaling saves her best material for Thompson, whose hard-nosed career woman initially only thaws in the presence of her ailing husband (a lovely turn by John Lithgow) but soon realizes that she can learn from others as well.

THE OUTSIDER

O First, it was that episode of Game of Thrones. Then, it was the recent summer offering Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

And now, here’s the indie Western The Outsider to suggest that maybe it’s time for filmmakers to consider buying a light bulb or two to help illuminate their sets.

In the case of The Outsider, much of the picture is set in the rain and in the dark, meaning that it gets pretty difficult to ascertain exactly who is doing what to which character.

Then again, since the visible parts of the picture are so overly familiar, we can reasonably surmise that we’re not really missing a whole lot when the screen goes dark.

The outsider of the title is Jing Phang (Jon Foo), a Chinese railroad worker with a loving — and pregnant — wife named Li (Nelli Tsay). Unfortunately, the thoroughly despicable son (Kaiwi Lyman) of the local marshal (country music star Trace Adkins) gets struck with, as he states, “Yellow fever,” so it’s not long before he’s raping and then murdering Li. Jing swears revenge, but Marshal Walker had promised his late wife that he’ll protect their idiot son no matter what.

It would be natural to assume that Jing would be the hero of his own saga, but director Timothy Woodward Jr. and scripter Sean Ryan apparently felt otherwise. In fact, neither Chinese character is treated very well by the filmmakers. In the case of Li, the camera lingers an awfully long time on her rape.

And instead of following Jing as he plots his vengeance, the film shifts to the fatherson dynamic between the marshal and his meathead son. When it turns back to Jing, he’s been replaced at the hero position

by Sean Patrick Flanery, cast as a tracker who’s hired by the villains but eventually teams up with the wronged outsider.

At least Flanery contributes an interesting performance. Foo is dull, Lyman overacts outrageously, and Adkins seems content trying to channel Sam Elliott.

Elliott, of course, was so magnificent last year in his Oscar-nominated turn in A Star Is Born.

But the country music star? Despite a decade of appearing in movies and on television, it’s more accurate to state that, in his case, a star is stillborn.

DARK PHOENIX

O And so it ends, not with a bang and not even with a whimper. Instead, the onceproud X-Men franchise ends in muted repose, rendered comatose by the shockingly bland and startlingly bad Dark Phoenix.

X-Men: The Last Stand? It looks as accomplished as Batman Begins by comparison. X-Men: Apocalypse? It’s been elevated to the status of Captain America: The Winter Soldier when placed alongside this dud. Even X-Men Origins: Wolverine offers a whiff of Avengers: Endgame quality in relation to this latest superhero saga.

Dark Phoenix is like Smokey and the Bandit 3, when even Burt Reynolds knew enough was enough and bailed before filming got underway. Dark Phoenix is like A View to a Kill, the 007 entry in which poor Roger Moore needed a walker more than he needed another shag with a Bond babe.

Dark Phoenix is like Police Academy 5: Assignment: Miami Beach, so feeble that it couldn’t even keep series star Steve Guttenberg in its clutches. Wait, scratch that: Nothing is as bad as those infernal Police Academy movies.

The point is that the X-Men franchise should never have ended on such a dreary note. While the rest of you have the Avengers to keep your thoughts warm on a cold winter night, I had the X-Men. It was my favorite comic book as a kid, and the 2000 X-Men, the movie that primarily jump-started this entire cycle of superhero cinema (although Blade, which preceded it, also deserves a salute), was like a godsend to those who had long dreamed of seeing Wolverine, Cyclops et al on the silver screen. X-Men, X2, X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past — all excellent (X-cellent?), and all indicators that this was that rare franchise with more highs than lows (and this is coming from someone who thinks Logan from the sister series is vastly overrated).

None of that counts for naught in the

face of Dark Phoenix. In comic lore, the Dark Phoenix saga is one of the greats, and X-Men: The Last Stand botched the assignment when it tried to transfer it to the multiplex. Dark Phoenix is yet another stab at the same material, and it mangles the task even more horribly than its predecessor.

Of course, The Last Stand was one of the films that featured the X-Men as adults, whereas Dark Phoenix arrives as part of the reboot that imagines the characters as younger versions of themselves. Thanks to inspired writing and spot-on performances, this worked beautifully in First Class and Days of Future Past, but some ill-advised casting and lack of depth in the characterizations turned Apocalypse and now Dark Phoenix into basically Muppet Babies X-Men, as Sophie Turner (Jean Grey/Phoenix), Tye Sheridan (Scott Summers/Cyclops) and Alexandra Shipp (Ororo Munroe/Storm) fail to capture the essence of their iconic characters (only Kodi Smit-McPhee as Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler seems likely to morph into the older version of himself, the one played by Alan Cumming in X2).

As before, Jean Grey is exposed to extraterrestrial elements that transform her from the heroic Phoenix into the villainous Dark Phoenix, and it’s up to the others to either save her or destroy her. Those who seek to assist her include Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Raven/Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), while those who want to off her include Eric Lehnsherr/Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Hank McCoy/Beast (Nicholas Hoult).

Entering the proceedings as a wild card is the alien evildoer Vuk (a dull Jessica Chastain), who hopes to absorb Jean’s newfound powers and use them for her own nefarious purposes.

Even when the results are as accomplished as those in Avengers: Endgame or the Star Trek reboots, it’s becoming increasingly irksome to watch all these alternate reality storylines that basically wipe away years of investment in earlier movies and their attendant characters.

That’s most pronounced in Dark Phoenix, since we’re now made to accept that The Last Stand never existed.

Yet Famke Janssen’s turn as Jean Grey was worthy of our sympathies as to the heroine’s fate, a condition gravely missing from this latest rendition. Turner is a colorless Phoenix, and with little built-up backstory to this new interpretation of the role, nothing’s really at stake.

Jean isn’t the only character to receive rough treatment. Inexplicably, Charles Xavier has been refashioned as a self-centered glory hound who craves public adulation and thinks nothing of tampering with the minds of his young charges. CS

Or you could suddenly find that you can access the willpower and ingenuity you need so as to change something about your life that you’ve been wanting to change. So I advise you to start planning now to take advantage of the upcoming blessings of the eclipse.

Visitors are invited to learn what it’s like to care for our native marine animals during a behind-the-scenes tour led by staff.
