IN LAST WEEK’S issue I wrote a short piece about a new upscale apartment complex set to go up in the burgeoning “Canal District” in West Savannah.

Though I felt it was a newsworthy story, candidly I thought few people would read the piece or be interested in it.

However, it turned out to strike a chord of interest and deep concern, judging by the online analytics.

The main concern is a sense that Savannah is rapidly gentrifying out of control, with a surplus of high-end housing popping up when maybe what we really need more of is affordable housing.

Will the jobs be there to fill all the upscale housing? What happens if not?

Does downtown Savannah become one big affluent retirement community instead of a magnet for millennial creatives?

To a certain extent, our residential boom is just mirroring a similar boom in many American cities right now. The U.S. economy is generally quite robust, and developers sense a green light for investment, here as elsewhere.

The current style of modernist highrise apartment buildings — often trendily named simply for the street address, as is the case with 703 Louisville and 630 Indian Street — is a template you can see right now popping up in nearly identical fashion all across the Sun Belt.

In the Southeast region, nearly 80 percent of all new apartments built in 2017 are considered luxury rentals!

political effects as well. The rapidly changing demographics of American suburbs led to sweeping Democratic gains last month all over the country.

For example, the once staunchly red suburban counties ringing Atlanta — Newt Gingrich’s old stomping grounds — are now a nearly solid swath of blue.

As former Savannah Mayor Floyd Adams Jr. predicted over a decade ago, such an economics-driven population shift is happening locally as well.

Many of our current elected officials, however, don’t seem to be as prescient.

In the piece I wrote about 703 Louisville, Alderman Van Johnson expressed concerns that the city isn’t doing enough to encourage affordable housing.

“I’m concerned about the ability of people on normal salaries to live there.

Most commenters shared sentiments along the lines of, “Where are all the people coming from who can afford this kind of rent?”

For many observers, the math doesn’t seem to add up.

According to ABODO, the median onebedroom rent in Savannah spiked ten percent just from November to December, up to nearly $900 a month — one of the fastest-rising rental rates in the country.

To be fair, $900 a month still pales in comparison to the jaw-dropping current one-bedroom median rents in Charleston and Nashville — $1300 a month and $1500 a month, respectively.

But Charleston and Nashville both have sizzling economies with a more robust jobs picture than here, both in availability and in median income.

You really wonder, as is often the case, if Savannah can keep up with its own notion of itself.

The 703 Louisville development mentioned in the piece will be nearly 250 units.

The nearby 630 Indian Street apartment complex will be nearly 300 units. That’s about 500 new top-dollar units, just between two developments.

That’s not even considering what’s being planned on the other side of downtown, at Eastern Wharf, which is envisioned as literally a whole new downtown in and of itself.

Nationally, nearly 90 percent of all largescale apartment buildings completed in the first half of 2018 were high-end!

Some Southern markets — Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, and Nashville chiefly come to mind — can support that kind of investment. Others you wonder about.

The recent announcement of a new Wayfair facility in West Chatham, promising 1,000 jobs at or above living wage, is certainly welcome and would contribute to investors’ bullishness about Savannah.

But there’s another statistic to keep in mind: Nearly 15 percent of Savannah workers are in the comparatively low-paying hospitality industry. For many of them, $900 a month for rent can be a crippling figure. Overall, the city remains at a nearly 30 percent poverty rate.

The even bigger national picture, of course, has to do with what one might call the reversal of “White Flight.”

All over the United States, investors — or to put it bluntly, white people — are moving back to long-neglected city centers, driving up rents, property values, and property taxes, and driving out longtime residents who can no longer afford to keep up with the rapid economic change.

Where are the displaced residents going? In many cities, Savannah included, they are, perhaps ironically, moving out to the suburbs.

This dramatic paradigm shift is not only having economic effects, it’s having

I’m concerned about that, and remain concerned that we don’t have places within the city core for folks to live,” Johnson said.

And quite rightly so. Johnson is not alone in these concerns.

But a cynic might respond that it it Johnson himself who is arguably the most ardent advocate of new development and gentrification in that area, the planned new Arena and “Canal District” being located within his own First District.

The rub of course, is when does muchneeded economic development turn into gentrification?

When does development become overdevelopment?

What is the proper role of government?

Johnson brought up the idea of rent control, but that will be a hard sell in Georgia, where rent control remains illegal.

The City of Savannah can’t reliably control speeding on 52nd Street, so I seriously doubt they have what it takes to help pass rent control in a deep South state.

Even if such a political and legal effort were eventually successful, by that time many if not most of these new developments will already be built out, have tenants in place, and probably be grandfathered in.

There is no easy, one-size-fits-all solution to the issue of affordable housing. To me, it does begin with addressing jobs, and therefore addressing poverty. CS

Introducing: Bike Walk Savannah

Name change driven by new focus on “people-powered mobility”

CAILA BROWN, chair of the Savannah Bicycle Campaign board of directors and Complete Streets program manager for Georgia Bikes, made a provocatively titled presentation at the Georgia Bike Summit on Oct. 13: “Bicycle advocacy is no longer just about bikes. Should our names reflect this?”

In the case of the bicycle advocacy organization she leads, at least, the answer is yes.

On Nov. 29 the Savannah Bicycle Campaign began operating as Bike Walk Savannah and announced its goals of promoting “people-powered mobility” and creating “an equitable environment for walking and biking in Savannah.”

This does not represent a radical change in the mission of the nonprofit, which was founded in 2008. Rather, it reflects the work it’s been doing for many years, Brown said. SBC has a history of collaborating with other organizations, including Chatham Area Transit, on projects that are not bicycle specific.

An ongoing partnership with Healthy Savannah led to the adoption of a Complete Streets Ordinance by Savannah City Council in 2015, which was aimed at making streets safer and more accessible for all users, no matter their mode of travel.

More recently, SBC teamed up with the Ardsley Park / Chatham Crescent Neighborhood Association on “Ardsley in Motion,” a comprehensive assessment of infrastructure in the neighborhood gathered by volunteers who conducted weekly “walk audits.” Bike Walk Savannah hopes to conduct similar efforts in other neighborhoods next year.

Still, Brown said, there are risks to rebranding bicycle organizations, even when done in order to better convey their missions.

“For some advocacy organizations, their main support comes from bike clubs and avid recreational riders,” she said. “They are concerned about losing their earliest and most fervent supporters.”

In the case of Bike Walk Savannah, however, Brown said the new name is a way to engage with residents who don’t think of themselves as “bike people,” but are proponents of safer streets, expanded mobility options, better quality of life, healthier communities, and more livable

neighborhoods.

“I think people believed that because we had ‘bicycle’ in our name, we were focused on the issues that pertained to — as they assumed — a fringe group in the community that required special benefits,” Brown said.

“But that couldn’t be further from the truth. While we were advocating for bike lanes, we were advocating for sidewalks.

We were advocating for better public transit stops. And we were advocating for better design that makes our streets safer for everyone who uses them, including motor vehicle drivers.”

The name may also counter suggestions that the organization should “stay in its lane,” to use a phrase that’s been in the news lately, when it advocates for programs, policies, and projects that may not be generally associated with bicycling. It helps explain, for example, why Brown attended a recent public meeting about “NewZO,” the proposed zoning ordinance.

“I talked with residents and city officials about the need for better neighborhood connectivity and the need to include safer streets in our planning process,” she explained.

But what about the “bicycle people,” who may wonder if the new name describes an organization that is still working on their behalf? Brown said people who use bikes for transportation or recreation (or both) needn’t worry.

“We are not abandoning our efforts to our city safer and friendlier for people who ride bikes, whether they are doing so by

choice or out of necessity. Our belief that bicycles make Savannah better is undiminished,” she said, referencing a message often included in SBC’s promotional efforts.

That means events like the popular Moonlight Garden Ride fundraiser, which attracts hundreds of participants every October, will roll on as will smaller, more casual rides held throughout the year.

The same goes for the New Standard Cycles program, which provides refurbished bicycles — along with lights, helmets, and locks — for free to people in need. The program takes its name from the former Standard Oil gas station on the corner of Lincoln and Henry streets, from which Bike Walk Savannah will continue to operate.

In addition to working with residents to use the “Ardsley in Motion” model in other areas to gauge baseline walkability and find opportunities for improvement, Brown said she’s interested in helping to organize and support neighborhood walking groups.

She will be on the lookout for opportunities to work with the running community to build support for multiuse trails and paths, as well, since they benefit runners as much as people who ride bikes.

FOR NEARLY a quarter century, the Telfair Museums’ “I Have Marks To Make” annual exhibit celebrates the power of art in transforming everyday life, for everyday people.

It is in fact one of Savannah’s longestrunning and most successful community programs of any type.

“It’s a great culmination of outreach throughout the year, plus work throughout the community. It’s our 24th year – I guess next year to mark 25 we’ll have to have a really big celebration,” laughs Harry DeLorme, Telfair Museums’ Senior Curator of Education.

All the works in “I Have Marks To Make” are drawn from participants in community partner organizations, and more than half were created as a result of Telfair’s Therapeutic Outreach program.

“The whole point of the show is that art has the potential to change lives — not just for artists or for those trained in art. Artmaking can have meaningful impact on

anyone’s life. It’s a core part of life,” DeLorme says.

“Looking at the range of people participating — kids and seniors and people from all walks of life and all kinds of situations – it is truly one of the most diverse events in town.”

The show’s opening – always an important event in Savannah’s calendar – is this Sunday afternoon at the Jepson Center.

Partners this year include the Savannah Center for Blind and Low Vision, Inc., EmployAbility, and Ruth Byck Adult Daytime Care Center.

Major support for “I Have Marks to Make” comes this year, as every year, from the City of Savannah. “ Otherwise we would not be able to do this,” says DeLorme.

The show “really strikes a chord with a lot of people. It’s a very different sort of exhibition than anything else we do. This one’s juried, not curated, it’s very democratic. The works are coming from participants or from organizations we work with. What I’ve noticed over the years it really touches people who view the exhibitions, touches the particpants, and really

empowers people,” DeLorme says.

“Making art really changed their life.

We’ve seen that particularly with the veterans painting group we’ve been coordinating for some time. Some vets talk about how art helps them cope with their lives.”

Some citizen artists are new this year, and some have participated before. But they all share a common desire to create art for art’s sake.

While the central mission of “I Have Marks to Make” is the same each year, there is a different theme for each edition.

This year, inspired by the Jepson Center’s Contemporary Spotlight artist Pam Longobardi, many of this year’s participants created artwork using materials collected by Tybee Clean Beach Volunteers and the Chatham County Conservation & Recycling Education Center.

Sand toys, bottle caps, candy wrappers, and other miscellaneous items were transformed into colorful works of art to promote local recycling efforts.

“We hope to connect the projects we’re doing in the community to what’s happening at the museum. It’s not just a random

“We’re trying to make connections to art and to content and themes at current exhibitions. That’s a way of bringing our content out into the community.”

The show is a graphic example of the Telfair Museums’ programming that brings art to the people. “We do something

like 160 outreach sessions a year, most recently our STEAM programs at neighborhood centers and libraries all over town,” says DeLorme.

“It’s very important to us to bring the museum out in community who might not otherwise come through our doors.”

For the longtime Telfair employee DeLorme, it’s personal.

“I grew up with a developmentally disabled brother, who unfortunately died in his teens. I remember him making art, and what that always meant to him. I’ve taken that with me personally,” DeLorme recalls.

“That’s informed this idea that art isn’t just made by artists or for people who frequent art musuems. Art has the potential to change anyone’s life for the better.” CS

Fatal shooting in West Savannah

Savannah Police’s Violent Crimes Unit is investigating the Nov. 26 fatal shooting of a 35-year-old man on Augusta Avenue.

“Officers were dispatched to the 2100 block of Augusta Avenue about 10:15 p.m. and discovered Gregory Jones suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to Memorial Medical Center where he died as a result of his injuries,” police report.

The circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Savannah Police detective tip line at (912) 525-3124. Information can also be forwarded to CrimeStoppers at (912) 234-2020. Tipsters remain anonymous and may qualify for a cash reward.

CNT breaks up prescription drug ring

Five people have been arrested following a joint investigation between the Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team

(CNT) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

“Earlier this year, CNT and DEA identified a group of individuals susFrank Haws pected of selling large amounts of OxyContin, an addictive opioid-based medication.

As the investigation furthered, agents determined the group was selling the prescription medication throughout Chatham, Bryan, and Effingham Justin Gordon counties,” a CNT spokesperson reports.

Between August and November of this year, agents arrested five people in connection with the operation. Arrested was 41-year-old Jason Toledo of Richmond Hill, 36-year-old Rebecca Hillis of Savannah, 28-year-old Justin Gordon of Savannah, 38-year-old Summer Boyles of Brooklet, and 36-year-old Frank “Pork Chop” Haws of Atlanta.

The wedding ceremony included traditions such as the exchange of rings (hers was placed on the finger of a stuffed doll created in her image) and friends and relatives in attendance, although Kondo’s parents did not attend.

A Bank of America ATM in Houston was the scene of a near-riot on Nov. 25 when it began dispensing $100 bills instead of $10s, reported Click2Houston. After the first lucky driver posted his score on social media, a crowd showed up and stood in line, with a few fights and arguments breaking out over about two hours, until police were summoned and the free money was shut down. Bank of America released a statement the next day that would have galled Ebenezer Scrooge: “Customers will be able to keep the money dispensed.”

Turns out the blame lay with a vendor who incorrectly loaded $100 bills into the $10 slot.

-- Richard Robert Langely, 46, of Kansas City, Missouri, was working part time for the Platte Woods Police Department in October when he decided to take part in the department’s drug take-back program. Except, according to court documents, Langely wasn’t disposing of drugs; he was helping himself to pills that had been collected in Lake Waukomis. And to make matters worse, the Kansas City Star reported, his own body camera captured evidence enabling prosecutors to charge him with felony theft of a controlled substance. Langely is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 10.

-- Wesley Glenn Bost, 27, of Birmingham, Alabama, made quite the impression when he fell through the ceiling of a Waffle House in Tuscumbia on Nov. 4, not least because he wasn’t wearing pants.

Bost apparently went into the restaurant’s bathroom and used his pants to tie the door shut, then, said Tuscumbia police Detective Sgt. Wes Holland, climbed into the ceiling with the intent of robbing the office. WHNT News reported that video of the incident shows Bost shoving other restaurant patrons on his way to the door, which was being held shut by people outside, before hitting the door with his shoulder and falling to the floor. Finally he managed to flee ... without his trousers ... which held his driver’s license.

Compelling Explanations

It happens all the time: A vehicle crashes into a building, causing damage and sometimes injury, because brakes don’t function or a driver steps on the wrong pedal. In the case of Keith Rio Cavalier, 28, however, there was more to the story. WLOX reported that Cavalier drove his 1997 Toyota Tacoma into a glass wall at the Harrison County courthouse in Gulfport, Mississippi, on Nov. 10 at around 6 a.m. The building was empty, so there were no injuries, and Cavalier can be clearly seen on surveillance video climbing out of the truck and leaving the scene. When police caught up to him, Cavalier told them he intentionally struck the building in order to report drug paraphernalia had been stolen from him. It will come as no surprise that Cavalier was found to have been driving under the influence and arrested; he was held at the county jail on $25,000 bond.

A referee in a Women’s Super League soccer match in Manchester City, England, stayed cool at the start of the televised game on Oct. 26 when he realized he’d forgotten his coin for the kickoff coin toss. Thinking quickly, David McNamara had the captains of the Manchester City and Reading teams play “Rock, Paper, Scissors” instead. But the Football Association, soccer’s governing body in England, was unamused, and on Nov. 26, McNamara began a 21-day suspension after accepting a charge of “not acting in the best interests of the game,” according to the BBC. An FA refereeing manager said: “He should have been more prepared. ...

Former Toronto Blue Jays star Jose Bautista has another honor to add to his resume, thanks to entomologist Bob Anderson of the Canadian Museum of Nature. On Nov. 22, reported the Associated Press, Anderson named a newly discovered species of beetle after the star third baseman and right fielder. Sicoderus bautistai is a small black weevil found in the Dominican Republic, where Bautista hails from. “I thought what a great way to kind of recognize (Bautista’s) contributions to Blue Jays baseball and to Canadian baseball, really, as a whole,” said Anderson.

The scientist has named about 120 weevils over his career.

• Katherine Leigh Mehta, 26, of Arlington, Texas, accepted a gig to photograph a wedding at The Springs Event Venue in Weatherford on Nov. 24. But she became the star of the show when wedding guests discovered her having sex with another guest in a room at the venue, according to WSRZ Radio. A security guard summoned Parker County Sheriff’s deputies, who found Mehta yelling by a fountain on the property, according to their report.

She then walked to a tree and urinated.

While she waited in the back of the patrol car, Mehta screamed: “Y’all families will be dead by Christmas. Y’alls daughters are dead. My dad is going to find out about this, and y’all are ... dead. D-E-A-D.” At the jail, officers found a bottle of anxiety pills, which they believe she mixed with alcohol, causing her erratic behavior. She faces charges of public intoxication and obstruction/retaliation.

Florida had reported seeing a Chrysler Pacifica minivan rigged with a clever device that lowered a black cloth over its license plate each time it drove through an automated toll plaza. But on Nov. 17, according to FLKeysNews.com, an offduty Florida highway patrolman spotted the vehicle as it passed through the Bird Road toll plaza and he alerted his fellow troopers. Sgt. Carlos Vanegas soon stopped Davis, according to the arrest report, and found a remote control device used to operate the license plate cover.

“The actions of the defendant showed an ongoing course of conduct with intent to defraud the SunPass toll system,” trooper Dennis Gallo wrote in his report. Davis was charged with organized fraud and petit theft.

Crime Report

Suspected car prowler Isaiah John Gellatly, 31, of Vancouver, Washington, was going about his business late on Nov. 19 when Happy Valley police were called, according to Fox12 News. Responding officers found Gellatly lying fully reclined in the driver’s seat of a Honda Accord matching the suspect vehicle’s description. Suddenly Gellatly sat up and sped away, leading to a pursuit and the use of spike strips. As his ability to control the car decreased, police said, Gellatly opened his door to flee, but forgot to put the Honda in park, so it rolled alongside him as he ran.

Eventually he tried to run in front of it, as the car hit a tree, a building -- and Gellatly, breaking one of his legs. Suspected stolen items found in the car included a tennis racket, a Ping-Pong paddle and a Texas Instruments calculator, begging the question: Was it worth a broken leg?

CHARLESTON ROOTS and soul band Gaslight Street has been the main musical venture for bandleader Campbell Brown for many years, cranking out a number of albums and dozens of songs in the process.

Along the way, the band weathered some internal storms and faced a significant challenge in 2015 with guitarist Dan Wright departed for other endeavors.

While some bands might call it quits at a moment like that, Gaslight Street pushed ahead – reshuffling and carrying on as a three-piece almost out of necessity.

Since then, they’ve leaned more heavily into their soul and R&B influences, as evidenced by their latest effort You Already Know. Ahead of their show at Congress Street Social Club on Fri., Dec. 7, we talked to Brown about the evolution of the band, and why it’s important to pursue music for the right reasons.

You guys have been doing this for a long time. I’d say you’re one of the longer running bands in Charleston?

CB: Yeah! I mean, me and Whitt [Algar] and Stratton [Moore] started doing the trio in 2015. Before that, we’d definitely had a couple different members. I feel like it’s been a rejuvenation since we’ve started the trio.

I was going to ask about that. A lot of bands might hang it up when they’re faced with a member leaving – did it feel like a new band?

CB: Oh, absolutely.

What made you want to keep going?

CB: Well, we had a tour lined up through March of 2015 and our guitar player had to leave – he couldn’t do the tours and he decided to take a step back. We were kind of at a crossroads. Whitt was playing upright bass at the time, and he suggested switching back to keys. He said, “I used to play in my brother’s band back in college and I played all the basslines on the Hammond.” It’s a lot to take on, but he nailed it.

It was really seamless.

He’s an unbelievable musician.

CB: Unreal. I remember when he first did it, I was floored. It made me pick up a lot of stuff on guitar – Dan was taking most of the leads, and I was just concentrating on rhythm and singing. That was challenging for me, but really it freed me up tremendously.

CB: It did. It’s weird, because it really did give us a lot of opportunities for where the direction of the songs would go. This last album we did, we recorded it as a trio and put all the basic tracks down live. Then we brought in a horn section, and then Kaitlin and Lorra from [the band] Sunflowers & Sin came in to do harmonies. That was really cool because we realized we could bring in sections – not necessarily special guests or players but sections – to fill out the songs.

CB: I started playing when I was 19. I’m 42 now, which is kind of crazy [laughs]. I listened to a lot of Motown and soul from the Marvin Gaye era to The Temptations, then into Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder. When I started playing I was listening to more of the blues guys like Albert King and Freddie King – all the Kings [laughs].

Allman Brothers obviously crept in there, and it’s just been kind of a growing process. Right now Lake Street Dive, they’re incredible live and just to listen to.

Whitt is pretty much the same. He and I always talk about what we used to listen to. He used to listen to a lot of Tool, which is interesting. He’s had a ton of different influences from a young age.

Stratton kind of leans more towards the funk style of things. Obviously the backbeat of all of our songs is upbeat and kind

of funk driven. He listens to the James Brown drummers a bunch.

Having been doing this for so long now, what’s the secret in terms of staying the course and keeping things moving?

It’s so easy for some bands to just give it a shot for a couple of years and then hang it up when things don’t meet their expectations in terms of “success.”

CB: For me personally, it’s about keeping a good balance. Keeping a good perspective as well. It’s just a blessing that we’re all able to do what we’re doing for so long.

Whenever I get bogged down I just kind of think about the history of everything.

Also, almost three years ago I quit drinking. I know that was key for me, as far as the late nights and traveling.

I was going through a divorce at the time, and I knew it was going to get kind of crazy. So I just stayed with it.

You mentioned something that I want to elaborate on – keeping perspective.

How important is it to be doing this for the right reasons?

CB: I know that you’re thinking, “Filling out coliseums or bust,” when you first start. But that’s not realistic. If that happens, great. But you still have to take that for what it is, stay focused and keep both feet on the ground so you’re not riding too high or too low.

Is the perspective you have and the gratitude you feel about being able to play music the thing that keeps the band evolving?

CB: I think so, just because we’ve been through so much. We’re a family, and I can’t imagine not playing with these guys.

We all play in different projects and sit in with different bands, but I can’t imagine not having this as part of my life. CS

CHICAGO-BASED psych rock band Thompson Springs has been working steadily since 2016, releasing a pair of wellreceived EPs and working alongside the likes of Wilco’s Pat Sansone and Kurt Vile collaborator Rob Laakso.

They’ve won over audiences around the country since their inception, and are set to come through Savannah on Mon., Dec. 10 at El Rocko Lounge.

The journey began when bandleader Matt Smith and drummer Jacob Bicknase were ending things with their previous band.

“We kind of split off from that – we were up in Madison, Wisconsin. I had a bunch of songs and wanted to try another project,” Smith tells Connect via phone from Montreal, Canada. “We had a neighbor, Andy [Goitia], who’s our bass player. He was recruited and it’s been the three of us since 2016 when we put out our first EP.” Though they started in Madison, they’ve essentially lived on the road for the past year and pushed their music around the country. Smith is from just outside of

Chicago, and that’s where the bands roots are planted primarily.

Though they’re best defined under the pysch banner, they’re musically much more varied and far-reaching – with influences ranging from Kurt Vile to Tom Petty.

“Kurt Vile was actually who I was listening to a ton at that time,” Smith says. “He made it seem like songwriting is accessible to everyone, because the stuff he’s singing about is everyday stuff. Andy is into Neil Young and more of the Gram Parsons stuff, which we all listen to. We love Tom Petty, and also some of the newer psych stuff like Ty Segall.”

Their latest effort, 2017’s Fond Regards, is an energetic and imaginative collection of songs that recall their influences but fuse them all in a way that sounds unlike any one thing.

Sonically, it’s an incredibly engaging piece of work that showcases smart song craft and melodic guitar work. The songs often have a hazy vibe and a slightly dark aesthetic, but there’s a youthfulness within them that make them listenable on a number of levels.

When it comes to writing songs, Smith says the music starts out primarily with him alone before he brings it to his bandmates.

“Jake and Andy make [the songs] better, pretty much,” he says. “They add things, offer opinions, and come up with new parts. I do as much as I can and then bring it to them.”

Their relationship with Sansone began when Smith went to see Kurt Vile open for Wilco in Madison. They were able to socialize after the show thanks to their friendship with Laakso, and wound up talking to Sansone and asking him to play on their EP. That led to Sansone signing on to produce their forthcoming full-length effort.

“It’s cool to hit up people who know way more than you and see what their process is like,” he says. “It’s good to learn on your own, too, but watching other people is cool.”

When Sansone first contributed to the band’s second EP, he recorded his parts remotely and sent them to Smith and his bandmates. They got the chance to work with him in a direct capacity later on, however, when they worked with him on the full-length album.

“He produced a couple of songs and added some instrumental parts,” Smith says. The band says they learned a lot from Sansone during recording, and were impacted by the opportunity they got to

work with someone of his stature.

“There’s an energy that he brings to the studio,” Bicknase says.

“It’s very positive and uplifting, and he’s always really conscious about the musicians and treating everyone as an individual. Not every producer is like that, but every producer should be. He’s also just a studio nerd – he’s grown up doing that since he was, like, 14 or 15. He was doing overdubs and just nailing. It was pretty inspirational to watch a pro at work.”

As for what’s ahead, Bicknase says the band is planning to keep moving forward and getting themselves out there any chance they get. They’ll be focusing mainly, though, on finishing the full-length and hitting the road to support it.

“We’re in a number of other projects. But we’re pretty much all in, just trying to figure out the best way to do it,” he explains.

“Right now we’re not really all living in the same place, so we’re trying to pool together and see how to make it happen.

We’ve had a real good time these last few years traveling and getting to know the ropes of life on the road.” CS

Savannah Philharmonic continues ‘Holiday Pops’ tradition The much-loved annual performance hits the stage on Dec. 7 & 8

FOR ALL ten seasons since its inception, the Savannah Philharmonic has been staging a holiday concert to help spread joy and holiday spirit throughout the city. This year’s Holiday Pops performance - taking place at the Johnny Mercer Theater on Dec. 7 and 8 - is no exception.

By all accounts, however, it’s bigger and better than ever. The show is set to feature holiday classics performed by the Philharmonic and their acclaimed Chorus, and also include visual elements courtesy of Stage Front Productions.

One of the most exciting aspects of this year’s concert is the Family Matinee, taking place on Sat., Dec. 8 at 3 P.M. It’s an abbreviated version of the show meant to cater to children and families who might appreciate a shorter performance.

“We’re creating a Santa’s Workshop in the lobby,” executive director Terri O’Neil tells Connect. “So, from 2 until 2:45 P.M., in advance of the 3 P.M. matinee, we’re going to have Santa and Mrs. Claus! We’ll 22 have a little performance by the Savannah

Ballet Theater, and it’s just going to be an awesome pre-concert activity for the family.”

Another notable factor that makes this year’s concert so special is the acquisition of nearly 1,000 tickets, which were purchased by Philharmonic contributors Dick and Judy Eckburg and members of the board of directors.

Those tickets will be given away to active military members and their families, as well as several other not-for-profits for families with challenges.

“Of those nearly 1,000 tickets, 550 of them will be going to military families who will be guests of Dick and Judy Eckburg at the Matinee,” O’Neil says.

The classical concert on Friday and Saturday night is set to be one for the books, with the Philharmonic Chorus being joined by guest vocalist Erica Gabriel 2018 gold medalist at the American Traditions Vocal Competition.

“She’ll be performing with the orchestra, which will be awesome,” O’Neil says.

“We value our relationship with the American Traditions competition. They produce such great vocalists, and we’re thrilled to be able to partner with them each year.”

This year’s Holiday Pops also marks a major milestone - Philharmonic Conductor and Artistic Director Peter Shannon’s final holiday concert with the orchestra before he departs at the end of the 10th season. The outgoing conductor’s final Holiday Pops performance will include an opportunity for him to interact with the audience during the show.

“We are delighted as always to bring the full orchestra and chorus together for all of your Christmas favorites. The evening Holiday concerts always have an added extra because we have the American Traditions competition Gold medal winner as our featured soloist,” Shannon said in a statement.

“In the one hour, afternoon children’s concert I get to play Santa Claus by inviting the kids up on stage to conduct! Just those smiles and sights alone make the Holiday concerts one of my favorites in the Philharmonic season!”

O’Neil says that the concert’s continued growth, due in large part to its immense popularity within the community, has been made possible thanks to generous donors like Colonial Oil and Enmarket.

“They are the concert sponsors, and they

use this concert to reward and thank their workforce,” she says.

“There’s over 100 folks working at Colonial and Enmarket who Colonial buys tickets for to show appreciation for. So what I see as we grow this concert series is the opportunity for local companies and corporations to use it as a thank-you or an acknowledgment for their staff or workforce.”

The biggest reason that O’Neil and the Philharmonic welcome expansion and growth each year is a simple one - it gives more and more people the chance to experience a unique and special holiday performance.

“During the holiday season, time is so competitive,” she says. “There are so many things going on. So by extending it, it gives us the opportunity to give the gift of music to more people.” CS

Legendary Hammond B3 organ virtuoso Ike Stubblefield has been spreading the good word of the B3 for decades, getting his start in the 60s playing with Motown greats like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and the Temptations. CULTURE PERFORMANCE Sweet Tease, about a year into the conception, more of us started attending festivals.

Number one, there’s not a lot of Southeastern festivals to begin with, but there are a lot of really talented performers in the area. People just don’t know they exist. The point of festivals, first and foremost, is to celebrate burlesque and bring it into the forefront, but secondly, it’s a great way for performers to network with each other.

The only way these Southeastern performers are getting noticed is traveling to festivals in other places. I’m like, we need to have one here so those performers can be seen, but also so people from other states can come and see what we have to offer as well.

Rita D’LaVane: There were people saying, “We wish Georgia had a festival,” and we felt the same way, but we knew that ultimately, we wanted to be able to grow into being able to host one. That happened by putting ourselves out there and networking and traveling and performing, but also submitting to other festivals ourselves to go see how everything was run and how people do that and what it looks like.

Belle: When we decided this was something we wanted to do, we wanted to pick and choose what we like and didn’t like.

For our festival, I’d say the majority of it is stuff we’ve nit-picked from other festivals [laughs].

D’LaVane: Everything has been a learning experience from the beginning. We took our experiences and began to brainstorm together and make it unique to Savannah.

What did you learn from other festivals that you used for this festival?

THIS weekend, watch a star-studded lineup of burlesque dancers perform their heart out in Savannah’s favorite haunts.

The inaugural Savannah Burlesque Festival features 60 performers, including burlesque royalty Dirty Martini, Jeez Loueez and Gabriella Maze.

The festival, already international in its first year, has been in the works since coproducers Rebel Belle and Rita D’LaVane founded the Savannah Sweet Tease Bur28 lesque Revue five years ago.

They’ve got a lot of strong local support, with Wax and Wane serving as the presenting sponsor and additional sponsorship provided by Lulu’s Chocolate Bar, Green Truck Pub, Savannah Slow Ride, and Moon River. Volunteers from the Sweet Tease, House of Gunt, and Tied and Tasseled Fetish Cabaret are also helping the festival run smoothly.

We talked to Belle and D’LaVane last week.

Tell me about the inception of the Savannah Burlesque Festival.

Rebel Belle: When we first started the

Belle: Our festival is really modeled after the Smoky Mountain Burlesque Festival in Knoxville, Tenn. We have become a sister festival to them; we’ve helped crosspromote for them. Their attention to detail and organization is super strong down to the way they run their backstage and their kittening crew. We have two of their producers as our stage managers, and I’m really excited to have them. They have a firm grasp—they’ve been doing it for three years now. It is a huge undertaking. Since the summer I’ve been putting in an hour to three hours a day on this festival, in addition to my jobs and being a mom.

D’LaVane: We wanted to be able to offer a well-rounded weekend full of classic burlesque and neo-burlesque and things that are more subversive and nerdlesque—get it all in there. That’s very much how we are as a troupe. We’re a bunch of different kinds of personalities and we wanted to have a very inclusive experience and offer space to POC performers and queer performers.

Belle: Our festival is going to be just like the Sweet Tease are: well-rounded. We have all kinds of performers. Our festival

is not sexist, sizeist, racist, ageist—it has a little bit of everything, but the one thing all these performers have in common is they’re insanely talented. We got almost 200 applications, and we were only able to accept 60 performers. You’re looking at the top 40 percent of applications—and they were all great.

Your headliners include some of the biggest names in burlesque.

Belle: Where we spent our money was the headliners. We wanted people to see who these headliners are. We have Dirty Martini, who is the number one burlesque performer in the world. She won Miss Exotic World 2004. She is one of the pioneers of neo-burlesque, one of the people responsible for bringing back burlesque and making it a thing again.

D’LaVane: She tours with Dita Von Teese. Without a doubt, we wanted her.

She’s someone that both Rebel and I have idolized in burlesque ever since we knew what that was.

Belle: Then we have Jeez Loueez, who is amazing. She produces her own festival and her own all-POC-performer show called Jesus Juke Joint.

D’LaVane: Not only is she an amazing performer, but her mission is to highlight and showcase other POC performer through her own productions. Doing that, just alone, is enough for me to love her and what she does, and she’s a fucking amazing performer.

Belle: Gabriella Maze is a legend. Legends are women who were performing in the 50s and 60s and 70s who still perform.

We owe it to them to give them work and show people that they are still the deal, man. These ladies can perform. They paved the way for us. People need to see them and know who they are.

What can attendees expect from the festival?

Belle: Moon River is brewing us a signature festival beer called Sparkle Britches.

It’s a peach golden ale with edible glitter.

They’re tapping that beer on the Friday before the festival and then having a preparty here on Wednesday. We’re going to have a couple performers walking around telling people about the festival. You’ll only be able to get that beer at Moon River or at our Saturday night show.

D’LaVane: Thursday is the Dirty South Soiree, a warm-up to the rest of the weekend. It’s a nice little mix of everything you’re going to see for the rest of the weekend. Ford Fatale is emceeing that night.

Friday is a double-feature night, Freaks and Geeks, so there are two shows. The Freaks showcase is something that offers more avant-garde burlesque, and the Geeks showcase is nerdlesque stuff. There’s an

Saturday is the main event, so it’s all the most dynamic performers that have been invited to perform. Dirty Martini is headlining, Jeez Loueez will be on. The featured guest emcee is Blanche DeBris.

Belle: Both Fancy Feast and Blanche DeBris have emceed for the Burlesque Hall of Fame—they are the real deal. They’re awesome.

Your headliners are also teaching classes. What’s the importance of including classes at burlesque festivals?

D’LaVane: You have people who are noteworthy within the industry for obvious reasons coming to perform for your event.

Of course you want to be able to have some time where you can learn something from them that they’ve learned through their own experience. It’s good to take a class from someone like Dirty. Learning from another and supporting one another and paying for classes is another way we can thrive and exist while putting the information out there and trying to teach other.

Belle: Jeez Loueez’s class is the Honey Badger Technique because she’s the Honey Badger of Burlesque. It’s a class on killing it onstage and learning to take what you want and dish it all back to the audience, giving the audience your sex. A class like this, committing to character—that’s all confidence. I feel like that kind of class is great for someone who loves going to see burlesque and loves the way that performer makes them feel. No matter if they don’t have dance experience, what age they

are, what sex they are, what color they are—taking this class is a way to get that feeling.

I’m doing a contemporary dance class.

It’s mostly dance-based and I talk about you can use contemporary dance in burlesque, but it’s not just for burlesque dancers. Another reason people come to festivals is for class opportunities.

D’LaVane: People ask us, “How do you get into burlesque? What do you do? What are the steps?” I always say, “If there’s a class anywhere you live, take it!” It’d be something I would do. That would be the first step. CS

CHRISTINA ZANETTI is a classic case of an overachiever.

“I’m kind of a pessimist and I’m extremely hard on myself, and I never feel like I’m doing enough,” she admits.

If you’ve been keeping up with HAZA the past few months, that statement probably comes as a bit of a shock.

HAZA opened in May of this year with Bin Feng’s “The American Dream” series.

Now, Zanetti is taking Feng and Nima Veiseh’s work to SCOPE Miami Beach, a satellite art fair accompanying Art Basel, the world-renowned art fair, happening this week.

HAZA is the first gallery from Savannah to show work during Art Basel Miami, which is no small feat.

But for an overachiever like Zanetti, that’s just the start of what she’s trying to do.

“We did the Telfair Art Bash and I ran into a friend who works at the Telfair,” Zanetti recalls. “She was like, ‘You’re really doing it. You’re doing an amazing job.’ I was like, ‘I don’t really feel like I’m doing anything.’ But that’s just the way my brain works. I’ m never doing enough, and even if I am doing enough, it’s not good enough for me.”

Don’t get her wrong, she’s still excited, but this has been in her plan all along.

“I look at this as a stepping stone for what I want HAZA to become,” she says.

“You have to partake within these art fairs, these bigger name art fairs, to get to where I want to be.”

The Southeast is drastically underrepresented at art fairs like these. “[SCOPE] has been supportive and helpful and excited to have a gallery from Savannah, Georgia, included on the roster,” says Zanetti. “If you look through it, there’s a few [exhibitors] from Atlanta, but other than that, nowhere else in Georgia or the Southeast, really.”

That means that HAZA’s appearance is big for Savannah, too.

“I think the city is developing more,” 30 Zanetti says. “With all the movie

productions here, people want to come here more. There are so many creatives here and so many artistic people and spaces to visit, but no one really realizes that. I’m willing to front the money for the greater good, in a way. Not just for my artists, but for Savannah, for people to realize that, yeah, there is something going on here.”

Zanetti’s willing to front the money, but she didn’t find the first offer SCOPE presented her to be fair.

“I talked them down like, $20,000,” says Zanetti. “I wasn’t willing to spend my money on this thing where we might go there.

Yeah, the exposure is great, but we might not sell anything. Then you’re in the hole. I’m not willing to lose anything. For a brand-new business, I have to be wise with the finances.”

Ultimately, Zanetti negotiated for a booth in a prime spot.

“It’s a smaller booth, but I don’t care,” she admits. “We’re a first-time exhibitor at SCOPE during Art Basel. We’re a brand new gallery. They’re putting us right at the front of the fair, so when people walk in they see us. We’re right by the VIP lounge, and when people leave, they walk by us again.”

Zanetti embarked on the negotiation process with advice from a friend who’s been a gallerist for over twenty years.

“She told me from early on, ‘Stick to your guns and you can get a booth for next to nothing,’” she recalls. “I handle things in a professional, nice way, but I’m not going to be taken advantage of.”

That attitude is just how Zanetti handles business.

“I’ve gotten heat from a few people about the prices of my artists’ work,” says Zanetti. “These people call themselves art collectors, but you really just want to deal in artwork. Which, I’m not interested in deals on artwork. The time and cost for the artist to make this, I want to educate people about that. If the artist is representing themselves, the price can be negotiated

and cut in half, but when you’re represented by a gallery, there’s an economics behind that. Educating people in Savannah about that is really important, too. This costs this much and I’m not going to argue that or try to cut a deal.

You’ve got to take cost of materials, time, if they’re working hourly, cost of framing, all of it. Everything that goes into making this finished piece that you can buy and hang wherever your heart desires. It’s not a couple hundred.”

Zanetti plans on hosting educational sessions when HAZA moves into its new location the first week of January.

“We have day-to-day visibility and foot traffic there,” Zanetti says. “It’ll be my own space. It’ll be what I’ve always aimed to be, of having a door on the location.”

HAZA started off in the Stables, a creative co-op, but outgrew the space.

“It was a great jumping-off point,” Zanetti says. “I wanted to test it out. How is Savannah going to respond to this? Is this even possible to do in general? Is this worth me even trying?”

This week’s appearance at SCOPE asserts that, yes, it was all worth it. CS

“The tour participants are going to be able to go in the house prior to the renovation,” says Allen, “and then next year they’ll be able to go back through and see it completed.”

“It’s a before-and-after progress shot,” says McDonald. “You’ll see the beautiful architecture even without paint, and so forth. That’s different for us—usually it’s fully furnished and renovated at the top of its splendor.”

“A lot of people aren’t aware that these houses have gone through so much renovation,” says Day. “This house used to be a telephone office for many years.”

While bringing attention to beautiful homes in the downtown area, the DNA also brings attention to community charities and organizations that need our help. All the funds raised through the tour go back to the community through grants.

“Each year, we have a grant proposal,” says Allen. “A lot of groups, especially that we’ve never heard of, might be the ones that need funding the most, which has been the case in years past. One group that we’ve given a grant to a couple years in a row is Urban Hope.”

This year’s recipients run the community gamut from the Chatham Savannah Authority for the Homeless to the Savannah Children’s Choir to WRUU Community Radio and reflect the interest the DNA has in enhancing the quality in their Historic Landmark District.

“Youth development is a big priority for us as far as grants are concerned,” says

Allen, “as well as humanitarian causes and public safety and other neighborhood initiatives. This past year, we were able to give out over 18 grants to different community groups. We wish we could give more, but it all depends on how much money we raise.”

The grant application for next year will go out in early February 2019.

With 700 tickets sold, the logistics of the tour can be tricky to work out. Each home has volunteers who help the tour run smoothly.

“We have people who are willing to help and stand for three or four hours and make sure the flow is right,” says McDonald.

“They have some factoids about the house because people have lots of questions, and they get trained up about the house and keep an eye out to make sure nothing gets damaged.”

Above all, the Holiday Tour of Homes focuses on our beloved community.

“The tour showcases the fact that Savannah is not just this place stuck back in the1800s,” Allen says. “It’s a living, breathing, active city with a large residential community. People live here! We hear tours coming by all the time that say, ‘Nobody lives here, these are just museum houses and law offices,’ and that’s just not true. We have kids, we have people of all ages.” CS

Classic spreads holiday cheer and a message of hope

THERE AREN’T many people who haven’t seen A Charlie Brown Christmas.

It’s perhaps one of Charles Schulz’s most beloved Peanuts cartoon specials, and is as ingrained into the fabric of our culture as any other classic Christmas cartoon. For several years now, Savannah Children’s Theatre has been bringing the story to life on stage under the direction of Founder and Artistic Director Kelie Miley.

Ahead of their December performances, which are set to run until the 15th, we spoke to Miley about why their performance of the classic holiday story has done so well and why Peanuts continues to resonate with people of all ages.

You guys are really great at bringing these animated stories to life. What was that process like with A Charlie Brown Christmas?

KM: This is our fourth year - the first year I did it, I didn’t intend for it to be an annual thing. When I saw that it was available and we did it, we had such an amazing response. It’s 18-and-under casting. So many kids came out for it, and it’s truly a cross-generational audience experience. I grew up with this special, back when you had to wait for a program to come on TV [laughs].

Charles Schulz nailed Charlie Brown’s characters - there’s a personality type for

all of us within his characters. They’re five years old, speaking like wise 40-year-olds.

He’s nailed the anxiety, there’s the shy introvert - they’re all there.

Everybody needs to watch the special - our script is exactly that. It’s not some new, avant garde take. It’s the traditional 30-minute TV special.

That being said, it’s short. Which is great for young attention spans. So because it’s such a short show, we do the Charlie Brown experience in the back. Kids can meet some of the characters, they decorate a cookie, make an ornament, color a comic strip, there’s a hot cocoa bar.

Then after that, we invite them into the theater and do the show. So it’s about an hour, which is still great for young attention spans! [laughs] What’s the best part of working with a young cast on a show like this?

KM: We had our last rehearsal recently - I’ve got two different casts, and it’s a three-week run which is a lot. When I was giving the final notes, a young girl who I’ve not worked with personally before raised her hand and said, “Can I please say something?”

She says, “I want everybody to know that some kids who come see the show, this is their very first theatrical experience.

Some people will come out for the Christmas show who’ve never seen a play, and I just want you to know that it can change the world. We’ve got to do the best we can do and be the very best Charlie Brown characters we can be.”

She was so earnest, and I loved her passion. That’s the best thing about working with kids. It’s not, “Hey, it’s 10 at night and I’ve got to go to work tomorrow. When are we going to be done with this thing?” It’s, “What can we do? How can we be better?”

That’s the best. They care so much about doing a good job and being all in.

That’s amazing. I’m curious, why do you think Charles Schulz’ characters and the Peanuts franchise has continued to resonate with people?

KM: I think it’s because there’s so much wisdom with Charles Schulz. When you’re sitting there watching the TV special or seeing our play, you know if you’re a Charlie Brown. You know if you’re a Lucy or a Linus. You see some of yourself in all of them. With just a few lines, he nails whatever it is he’s trying to say.

On the surface, Charlie Brown looks depressed. Things don’t go right for Charlie Brown. But the reason we all love him is because he’s a character of hope. He doesn’t say, “You know what? I’m done. I’m never kicking that football again.” He’s not ostracized by his little community, they always just keep trying to forge on. CS

I opted for the traditional pork version available on the Diplomat’s menu, and was not disappointed. I have sampled my fair share of traditional bahn mis and can spot a bad one from a mile away.

If you close your eyes while eating the Diplomat’s Pork Bahn Mi you can almost imagine yourself walking through a street market in Asia. Their pork version is the most traditional of the three available options.

Tender roasted pork lay underneath a bed of crispy pickled vegetables, green and spicy jalapeños and citrusy cilantro, the blanket is a cool yet fiery sriracha mayonnaise. Enveloping it all is Chef Holland’s remarkable baguette featuring its great chew and crispy crust.

For both the avocado and beet version, the pork is substituted with your choice of roasted beet or creamy ripened avocado.

On the other side of the continent—or menu—you will find the Cuban sandwich.

It too is true to the classic version of the sandwich and features all of the right ingredients. Two types of pig, smokey ham and juicy pork, work together to coat your palate with a succulent pork bomb. To balance the piggy pair, kosher pickles cut through the fat and bright yellow mustard adds a bite.

THE Diplomat Luncheonette has rolled out new and extended hours. But when I popped in last week to get a boat-sized sandwich for a semi-late lunch, I was thrilled to also find a new menu, new prices, and a new face behind the change.

The prices are small and the sandwiches better than ever, but the biggest change of all is the man behind the menu, former chef at the now-closed Our Daily Bread and experienced baker, Joshua Holland.

I’m saddened to see a Savannah staple close its doors, but as a foodie I’m excited to see a Savannah chef continue on with his work. What can be better than two of this town’s powerhouse sandwich shops combining forces?

My first question to Chef Holland is how he approached creating this new and improved menu for The Diplomat, Chef Holland tells me, “The current menu is a lot of what we were doing at Our Daily Bread Cafe and what The Diplomat was doing but with a more fun approach and some things that everyone can relate to.”

Because Chef Holland is creating all of the baked goods for The Diplomat Lunchonette, they alone shine as some of the best things offered on the menu and for good reason.

Chef Holland tells me, “The baked goods we are doing here are mostly the favorites I was doing at Daily Bread, and some things we just come up with on the fly.”

The bread that encloses each sandwich is so expertly executed, it almost becomes the star of each of the walk-up’s creations.

Three varieties of Bahn Mi sit on the large menu board at home on the Luncheonette’s wall, pork, beet, and avocado.

For those who have never experienced the joy of eating a bahn mi sandwich, bahn mi is a Vietnamese street food with a bit of French influence. The sandwich, that originated in Saigon, traditionally comes with pork, pickled vegetables, and cilantro all encased in a baguette.

The Mac and Cheese.

Let’s talk sides. The Diplomat’s new prices includes a sandwich and small side or a half of a sandwich and large side for only ten bucks. If you are smart, you’ll order more than one side. Not because you need a larger portion, but once you see the list of sides they boast, you won’t be able to select only one.

You should start with the Mac n’Cheese because as Chef Holland puts it, “We can’t seem to make enough mac and cheese to keep with with the demand. It’s made from scratch and has been a popular item for us.”

Do not expect to get that weird gelatinous block of baked mac and cheese found on a few too many Southern tables.

The Diplomat’s Mac n’Cheese is a lake of creamy sharp melted cheese surrounds al dente pasta.

Chef Holland adds a tiny sprinkle of fresh grated cheddar to the top, which upon looking at it seems like a simple little garnish, but turns out to be one of the best parts of the entire bowl of Mac n’Cheese.

His use of fresh, unmelted, cheddar gives the side item a bit of texture and second dimension of cheese flavor.

I will let you decide for yourself whether the Cheesy Grits or Mac n’Cheese are the better side; it was a task too large for me to accomplish.

First of all, how often to find grits with cheese already cooked in them on a menu.

Second, Chef Holland adds the same care

in composing and finishing the dish as he does everything else. So, my conclusion is The Diplomat’s grits stand up to any other grits around town.

The final side I tried was their soup of the day, a turkey tikka masala soup. The flavor so deep and layered, it tasted as though it took hours to cook.

As to be expected the turkey layered within the soup was fall off your fork tender and balanced out the large amount of spices used to create tikka masala.

The store’s new hours means a breakfast is on the menu, but the late night hours are still the same. After hearing about the items featured on the late night menu, I have found myself looking for a reason to stay out and catch it.

The item that stood out the most was the Pigs-In-Blankets, so I had to find out how Chef Holland makes them.

He explains, “Pigs in a blanket is an item that I made for Pinkies a couple of years ago for an event they were doing. I decided to make it fun and put them in our house croissant instead of the traditional dough they are usually found in.”

On the late night menu you will also find their Quesadilla, Grilled Cheese On A Stick, Thai Beef Tacos, and Pork Dumplings. You have until 2 am on Saturday. CS The Diplomat Luncheonette is at 314 Drayton St.

CREED II

OO The release of Creed three Thanksgivings ago allowed me to role-play as The Grinch throughout the 2015 holiday season, as my mixed review was in contrast to the sizable box office it enjoyed from audiences and rave reviews it garnered from most other critics.

As I wrote at the time, “What’s disappointing about Creed is how slavishly it follows the template of the previous pictures.

It’s certainly not bad — it’s the best entry since 1982’s Rocky III — but aside from the character shift, there’s nothing here that’s especially original, and one’s enjoyment depends entirely on how charitable one is feeling in the nostalgia department.”

That statement — and sentiment — can be equally applied to Creed II, which, like its predecessor, is enjoyable in fits and starts.

The best aspects of the first Creed remain the selling points here — namely, the performances by Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone. Jordan again excels as Adonis Creed, the son of the legendary boxer Apollo Creed and the current heavyweight champion of the world.

And while Stallone, whose two Oscar nominations as an actor were for the original Rocky and the original Creed, isn’t given quite as much to do here, he’s still wonderful in the role. Garrulous of mind and generous of heart, Rocky Balboa remains a rich and complex character, and even his demotion from series focus to supporting player has done nothing to quell his all-embracing humanity.

Given the fact that the Rocky/Creed franchise has always feasted on the past, the hook this time isn’t exactly unexpected. Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), the Russian boxer who killed Apollo Creed in the ring before being vanquished by Rocky (see 1985’s Rocky IV), now has a son, Viktor (played by boxer Florian “Big Nasty” Munteanu), who’s carrying on his father’s personal vendetta against Rocky and the Creeds. It’s arranged for Adonis and Viktor to square off, with more than just a championship on the line.

For both men, it’s a chance to right perceived wrongs from the past while serving up a side dish of revenge. Adonis is torn between following this path or taking the sage advice of his wife Bianca (Tessa Thompson) and mother Mary Anne (Phylicia Rashad). Viktor just grunts a lot in preparation.

As for Rocky, who was ringside when Apollo was killed, he has to decide whether or not to similarly coach Adonis in what might prove to be a death match.

It’s irresistible material — or at least it would be if the film ever bothered to offer any narrative surprises or unexpected character beats. Instead, it’s once again played at a safe level, as director Steven

Caple Jr. (replacing Creed writer-director Ryan Coogler, who moved on to Black Panther) and the quartet of writers (including Stallone) are fearful of damaging this enduring tentpole.

When the most emotional instance in the entire picture occurs as Bill Conti’s magnificent signature score from the first Rocky finally finds its way onto the soundtrack, it’s clear we’re responding in a Pavlovian manner to the music rather than the moment.

That’s not too say Caple (helming only his second feature) botches the assignment, as there’s enough to enjoy to earn the film a modest recommendation.

Even given their predictability, the fight sequences are effectively staged, and the training montages are also handled well.

Still, what’s most interesting about Creed II is its correlation with Rocky IV. That earlier film is utterly daft, but it’s also a perfect snapshot of the Reagan ‘80s, as audiences cheered as all-American Rocky took down the dreaded Commies — the film even ended with the Russkies themselves (both the commoners and the politicians) cheering for Rocky!

Creed II offers comparable scenes, but the sociopolitical sheen has worn off and perhaps even switched sides.

After all, in the current arena, there are many US citizens who would relish the sight of a white Russian beating up a black American — a ghastly realization that would have been unimaginable in any other era.

ROBIN HOOD

O In Robin Hood, you can’t see the forest for the cheese.

That’s right: The mighty Sherwood Forest, home of many previous Robin Hood screen incarnations, doesn’t make an appearance until the waning moments

of the film. Before then, this hokey and hyperactive undertaking starts off during the Crusades, where the drafted Robin of Loxley (Kingsman kid Taron Egerton) squares off against an enemy whose gadgetry shoots out arrows as if they were bullets being spit from a machine gun (this scene owes more to The Hurt Locker and American Sniper than to Errol Flynn or Disney’s swashbuckling fox).

After that, it’s back home to engage in court politics with the utterly venal Sheriff of Nottingham (Ben Mendelsohn, basically reprising his sneer-worthy role from Ready Player One) by day while spending his nights dressing up as “The Hood” (hand to heart, that’s what everyone calls him) and stealing from the rich and giving to, well, his own 401(k), I reckon – the film isn’t always clear when it comes to the redistribution of wealth.

A medieval makeover meant for millennial moviegoers, Robin Hood suggests that Nottingham came outfitted with its own Urban Outfitters and everyone spoke like bratty teenagers (“I’m Robin.” “I’m busy.”). Jamie Foxx has his moments as Little John, but Eve Hewson is a charmless Marian and Jamie Dornan a deadweight Will Scarlet.

And then there’s Amadeus Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham, who delivers his lines as the corrupt Cardinal as if he were channeling Bela Lugosi. I half-expected him to suddenly yell, “Pull the string!” — which, if nothing else, would have been a cue to lower the curtain on this buffoonish boondoggle.

WINTER SCIENCE SERIES: FISH SAMPLING CRUISE Join the crew of the R/V Sea Dawg for a sampling trip in Wassaw Sound.
