FEW THINGS more dramatically show the nature of modern U.S. politics than the upcoming battle for the Georgia governor’s mansion between Stacey Abrams and Brian Kemp.

I find the race hugely fascinating, not only because of the importance of the position, but because of what its dynamics say about Georgia, about our two major parties, and about America itself.

Democrats in Georgia have become accustomed to seeing highly touted candidates, fawned over by the national media, come up embarrassingly short when it comes time for an actual statewide election.

To name just two examples, the muchtouted dynastic campaigns in 2014 of Jimmy Carter’s grandson Jason Carter for governor and Sam Nunn’s daughter Michelle Nunn for senator were notable flameouts, after months of glowing press.

Stacey Abrams appears ready to break that mold. Not only because she’s notably not a member of an established political family, but because among other positive qualities, she likes campaigning, and she’s really good at it.

And candidates matter.

Carter and Nunn’s problem was not only that they were Democrats in a Republicanheavy state, but they were — simply put — bad at campaigning. They didn’t seem to really enjoy being around other people all that much. Voters sense that, and respond accordingly.

Candidates matter.

However, it’s just as true that Abrams represents, by design, a move by state Democrats away from the center and more to the left. This is what the party’s progressive base demands, in Georgia as well as around the country.

It remains to be seen how effective that strategy will be in a state which gave Donald Trump 51 percent of the vote in 2016.

Meanwhile, Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Kemp has tied himself directly to Trump in his bid, crediting a late Trump endorsement to a surge in support which catapulted him to a devastating 40-point annihilation of his opponent in the primary runoff, Casey Cagle — who had been considered a stone-cold lock for the nomination just a few weeks before.

Cagle’s troubles with his own party arguably began when he was caught on tape describing the primary as “who could be the craziest.”

They say that in politics a gaffe is when you’re caught telling the truth. And Cagle’s gaffe seems emblematic when you consider the absurdly cartoonish ad that Kemp became known for, in which he brags about knowing how to use a gun, a chainsaw — and a pickup truck to, in his words, “round up criminal illegals.”

Former Georgia Gov. Roy Barnes, one of the last of the so-called Blue Dog Democrats, recently told the New York Times that Georgia was once governed very effectively from the middle.

“We were all very much in favor of public education. We kept really controversial issues down by an unwritten agreement.

But the middle has gone, and it has gone to the extremes unfortunately. It is a microcosm of what is happening in the country,” Barnes said.

He went on to tell the Times that neither he nor his late predecessor Zell Miller could make it through a Democratic primary in 2018, nor could current Senator Johnny Isakson win a GOP primary today.

Regardless of whether Abrams or Kemp wins in November, our outgoing governor, Nathan Deal, is likely to be the last Georgia governor for quite awhile to govern from the middle, or something close to it.

Deal — a former Democrat — has been able to largely push back the more socially conservative wing of his own Republican Party in efforts to maintain Georgia’s image of being friendly to national and international investment.

And here we get to

the elephant in the room — and I don’t just mean the GOP party symbol.

Georgia currently has by some measures

the largest film industry on the planet. The economic impact of the film and TV industry in the Peach State is estimated to be at least $9.5 billion.

From Marvel to Madea, from Black Panther to Baby Driver, from Freeman and Travolta in Savannah to the new Disney film set to shoot here, make no mistake: Much of Georgia’s current economic boom can be directly tied to the film and TV industry.

It’s a non-polluting industry. It’s a technologically advanced industry. It provides plenty of jobs for a diverse range of people from all walks of life. It doesn’t depend on costly construction projects. And it provides literally priceless PR for a deep South state sometimes badly in need of image enhancement.

Regardless of your politics, you’d think you’d want as much of that as you can get.

Money isn’t everything, true. But the film and TV industry do nothing but move Georgia forward on all fronts.

Enter Brian Kemp, stage right.

Kemp has gone on record pledging his support of a version of the controversial “religious freedom” legislation which critics say leaves the door open to discriminating against LGBT adoptive parents. This is a similar, scaled-down version of the same legislation vetoed by Deal in 2016.

And what’s the one thing that could persuade the film and TV industry to go elsewhere despite Georgia’s lucrative and generous tax incentives?

You guessed it: Blatant discrimination.

The scene is set. Both Democrats and Republicans in Georgia made very strong choices for what kind of candidate they want to represent them in November.

Both Abrams and Kemp swamped their primary opponents, and both can say they have a clear mandate from their party’s respective bases.

It will be interesting to see how much the debate over the future of Georgia’s film and TV industry will shape this pivotal race for the Governor’s mansion. cs

Westside Arena: Crunching the numbers Part Five: Rosy economic projections largely don’t add up

$9 million. To vacate the site, the city plans to spend $20 million on a new service center off Interchange Drive.

While not strictly necessary, spending $8 million to restore the Waterworks building should be a high priority, since it’s hard to see anyone building next to a decaying structure with plants growing out of the roof.

And what about the additional expense of shuttle buses, pedestrian pathways and mitigating soil contamination? New buses needed to move attendees can easily run $500,000 each.

To facilitate pedestrian access to the site, plans include a greenway along the canal and the proposed Alice-Cohen Corridor pedestrian path.

AT A proposed cost of $140 million, the Westside Arena promises to be one of the most expensive civic amenity projects undertaken in Savannah’s history.

Advocates trumpet how the arena “is already paid for” through SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax), a supplemental 1-percent sales tax. Yet building the arena in the “Canal District” near West Gwinnett Street and Stiles Avenue will likely cost much more to become a functional reality.

How much more? The total public investment in the area could be nearly

$300 million, of which over $90 million are costs unique to this site that could be avoided with a different site closer to downtown!

How is this possible?

The tangible additional costs could exceed $130 million. As discussed in part 3 of this series, providing sufficient onsite parking will require the construction of multiple garages easily totaling $60 million.

To address flood mitigation (discussed in part 4), the consulting engineering firm Thomas and Hutton recommended the widening of the Springfield Canal at a cost of $33 million. Road improvements on Gwinnett and Stiles to handle the increased traffic are predicted to be about

These will require still more resources—$750,000 per mile just for construction alone by one estimate—especially if private land needs to be acquired.

Developing any of the parcels surrounding the principal arena site would entail the abatement of known soil contamination. These costs haven’t been identified, but can become extremely expensive.

The City should make abundantly clear what every element of the project will cost and how it will be paid for.

Every dollar spent on or in support of the arena, after all, has an opportunity cost: the extra policing, drainage improvements, cultural events and community services that could otherwise be applied to other parts of the city.

For all the millions of taxpayer dollars that will be spent on the new Westside Arena, its financial performance outlook is poor. While arenas have a broader public purpose and may be worthy of subsidies, the City’s chosen site for the project further undermines its ability to cover its operational costs.

By and large, arenas are a losing business proposition that require extensive subsidies for their operation, to say nothing of capital (construction) costs.

Despite its central location, the current Civic Center is no exception, losing approximately $1.7 million a year, according to the City. It is kept solvent with money from the hotel-motel and rental car taxes and historically also required general fund appropriations to further patch holes in its budget.

A set of comparable facilities provided by the city’s arena consultant, Barrett Sports Group, also lost money on average.

The few facilities that do manage a modest profit are usually attached to larger complexes with convention centers or conference halls.

Yet the Barrett Sports Group predicts the operation of the new arena will break even. No consultant stays in business long recommending against its self-interest.

Their analysis is based on optimistic and rather flexible assumptions, so this is hardly surprising.

They foresee the facility making about $300,000 a year upon opening, declining to $187,000 by year five. Unimpressive as they sound, these figures are based on rosy expectations of revenue on everything from naming rights, parking and advertising to the demand for premium seats.

If any of these are much less than expected or if costs are much higher than expected, the new arena will operate at a loss and require subsidies.

As the consultants acknowledge, a 10 percent drop in projected attendance combined with a 10 percent increase in operating expenses would have the arena lose more than it is now projected to make. If the current Civic Center is any indication of how the new arena will perform, the outlook isn’t good.

There are many reasons to doubt these projections of profit. Parking revenue, for one, will almost certainly be needed to pay for garages.

Savannah International Trade and Convention Center former manager Bob Coffey noted in a presentation to City Council that given Savannah’s small market size (half that of Charleston and a quarter of Jacksonville’s) and event culture, it “has been historically difficult to support premium access or membership-based activities.”

In other words, premium seats and suites are unlikely to do well in this mar10 ket. Savannah, he says, sees a “cheap

ticket/late ticket phenomenon” where people are accustomed to approaching the box office last minute and asking for a discount.

Yet BSG’s cash flow projections have the new arena earning almost as much from premium seating and luxury boxes as overall venue rental. None of this bodes well for the arena’s long-term financial health.

The Westside site further undermines much of the new arena’s business potential. As proposed, it has sufficient capacity to host conventions and large meetings, but utterly lacks the on-site function and service facilities like large hotels and restaurants critical to attracting those types of events. Without them, the arena can only ever be a “satellite” facility.

Even with some additional development in the area, it’s highly unlikely a premium hotel could operate profitably on infrequent arena traffic. A downtown arena, by contrast, could pull from a dozen existing large hotels within easy walking distance.

For proponents of the new Westside arena, the lack of amenities is a minor problem, since they expect the new facility to unleash a torrent of private investment.

There is very little evidence to support a “build it and they will come” ethos, however.

If academic studies are any guide, a 2007 review found “the broad conclusion of this literature is that stadiums and franchises are ineffective means to create local economic development, whether that is measured as income or job growth. There may be substantial public benefits from stadiums and franchises, but those too are insufficient to warrant large-scale subsidies by themselves.”

You don’t have to look far for a relevant case in point: the current Civic Center was likewise promoted as a catalyst for redevelopment as an urban renewal project when it opened in 1974, yet its neighborhood remained quite depressed into the 2000s. Vacant or underutilized lots remain nearby even today.

When modeling a project, planners pay most attention to spending from

out-of-town visitors drawn to arena events. These are the outside dollars that stimulate the local economy.

Unfortunately, the project consultants fail to compare their projections to existing figures for the current Civic Center—a common oversight—so their value of about $9 million a year is all but meaningless.

One could certainly argue that the current Civic Center, though showing its age, is much better positioned to attract indirect visitor spending on restaurants, bars, hotels and tours, all of which are included in the consultants’ forecasts. The net new spending resulting from the venue could be quite minimal and might even be negative.

There are several further reasons to be skeptical of any headline numbers promising millions in economic benefit. Much of what Savannah residents might spend at the new arena is money they would have spent eating out or catching a small live performance downtown. People simply substitute one for the other.

To the extent the new facility attracts business away from the convention center, it creates no net benefit; more public funds will be shoveled towards Hutchinson Island to keep that facility afloat.

And what about the current proposal to double the size of the Convention Center? How will that impact the use of the new arena?

Even if the arena could somehow defy the odds and draw substantial investor interest, there are few good options for associated development. To the north, east and southeast is extremely low-lying land that would be quite challenging to build upon (see last week’s segment).

The Carver Village neighborhood to the south and west of the site is nearly all detached homes and evicting families is hardly an acceptable option. This leaves only the arena site itself and a handful of parcels to the west across Stiles and to the south across Gwinnett.

As I discussed in a previous segment, much, if not all, of the City-owned land here will be needed for parking; even the

church-owned lot to the southwest was included in the consultants’ tally of parking spaces.

With enough money spent on garages, at best a few acres might be available for development once space is set aside for roads and landscaping. On private land, the lot occupied by Savannah Steel Scaffold could have potential, but only if the owners agree to sell. For such a massive “catalyst” investment, it seems there is little the arena can actually catalyze.

The current range of plans for the new arena do very little to contribute to the long-term financial health of the city. They sink vast amounts of public funds into a (probable) loss-making asset and will likely pave over the remaining publicly held land for parking. Unless generous incentives are provided, the scheme will attract little private investment, in part because there will be few development sites remaining near the arena.

Even if sites are acquired, the available evidence suggests that arenas are poor anchors for private investment. A quick look at any comparable arena—unless it’s at the core of a large city—reveals few restaurants, bars or shops; parking lots predominate instead. This is true of Charleston, Augusta, Macon and Greenville, to name the most-cited comparables.

A city arena is an important civic amenity that draws in visitors and supports community events. Savannah deserves and needs a great facility, even if it fails to pay for its operations.

The current arena is expensive to maintain and will eventually become functionally obsolete, if it isn’t already. The point in question is whether the city is best served by a new arena on the Westside, renovating the existing arena, or building a new arena somewhere else.

Even if acquiring a new site closer to downtown required $10-$15 million, it would likely save far more in the long term by avoiding new parking garage construction, flood mitigation, and by comparison would require few road improvements. It could build on a vast network of existing businesses and lodging options.

Meanwhile, the waterworks is a glorious historic building begging for restoration. It could serve as an anchor development for an actual “Canal District” redevelopment that could evolve incrementally as demand materializes and much more on the surrounding neighborhood’s terms.

How is Savannah best served? Which financial and practical outcomes do we want? The choice is ultimately up to us. CS This is the final segment of a Special Report analyzing the proposed new Westside Arena.

WRUU online fundraiser goes live this weekend How would a listener get more involved with WRUU?

HELP KEEP Savannahians on the air with WRUU 107.5’s summer online auction.

WRUU is a local radio station and a ministry of the Unitarian Universalist Church.

Launched just over a year ago, the station is entirely volunteerrun and seeks to give all Savanna-area residents a voice.

WRUU’s online auction includes a wealth of donated goodies from local businesses.

We spoke to volunteers Trent Kissinger and Jennifer Highland last week.

Tell me about your online fundraiser.

Trent Kissinger: We’ve done an online auction the past few summers, and now we have a lot more hosts—close to 7! It’s a lot like eBay. It’s a completely virtual fundraiser where people who’d like to make some bids can go look at the catalog. When it opens, they can put their bids in, and when the auction is over, whoever put in the highest bid wins.

We have a lot of different items. Everything from gift cards to local coffee shops to really high-interest items, like massages or a child’s tractor. It’s a broad range of things, so no matter what your interest, or whatever you’re willing or able to throw in, you’re going to be able to find something.

How will the funds raised be used?

TK: Every single dollar raised goes right back to keeping the radio station on the air.

We have a number of recurring costs every month. WRUU is 100% volunteer-run, and so none of the money goes towards paying any person. It all goes towards fees, like the fees we must pay for royalties for the music we play. It goes for actual utilities of the station. With all the equipment we have, we have to keep the AC running 24/7, and in Savannah that’s not an option [laughs]. We have a tower rental so we can broadcast the signal.

There’s a lot to be said for social media, and we have a growing Facebook page, but there’s just something special about a radio broadcast that comes on when you get in the car.

Tell me more about your programs you have.

TK: We have a lot of music shows. Our hosts curate those based on knowledge and taste. We’re getting more and more talk shows that cover things like political issues, as expected, but we also have shows like advice on having a pet.

TK: Our whole goal is to give anyone in Savannah a voice. We have a diverse population.

At this point, there are still a number of open time slots.

We’re looking for a really broad range to mimic the broad range of people in Savannah.

Jennifer Highland: We started with three program hosts and now a year later we’re up to almost 70! When we have our volunteer orientation, we give a spiel about the station and the potential host gives a spiel about the show they’re proposing.

We will work with you until you’re ready. If you’re a seasoned control board person, you’re in quickly. If you’re not, then we’ll work with you. And when they realize their dream that they’re finally going to be on the radio, their faces just light up with big smiles.

TK: That’s what it’s all about.

Why is it so important for Savannah to have a station like WRUU? TK: It all goes back to our mission of providing everyone in the Savannah area a platform for their voices. There’s a lot to be said for social media, and we have a growing Facebook page, but there’s just something special about a radio broadcast that comes on when you get in the car. It reaches a different population. We’re also streaming online as well, and if you have an Alexa, you can say, “Alexa, play WRUU!” JH: We’re big time now!

TK: We’re still a growing radio station, so we don’t have that much data [on worldwide listeners], but the longer we go, the more data we compile, and the more we can see where our reach is. We do have people listening from all around the world.

We do want to focus on Savannah and Savannah residents, but if people from all around the world want to hear what Savannahians have to say, that’s awesome! CS

The City of Savannah’s Office of Special Events, Film and Tourism announces that they are working with Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures on a movie that will shoot in Savannah through the fall.

The movie project is called Goodbye Stranger. Filming is anticipated to begin September 10 and conclude in December.

Goodbye Stranger is being filmed entirely in Savannah. The outdoor, public locations that will be impacted during filming include Johnson Square, Factors Walk near Wet Willies and Wright Square, says a City spokesperson.

The film is a period love story, circa 1910.

Diane Sabatini, Executive Producer with Collar Free Productions, said they selected Savannah because of its historic architecture and beautiful squares and trees and because it looks like Brooks Stillwell it was, “sprinkled with magic.”

Goodbye Stranger is expected to bring a $20 million stimulus to the local economy. Collar Free Productions plans to hire local employees, utilize local small businesses, and donate unused materials to community non-profits.

Office of Special Events, Film and Tourism Director Susan Broker said, “The fact that the production company elected to film entirely in Savannah is a real testament to our locations, local crew and the filming community. Projects like these certainly stimulate the economy; but beyond that, they put people to work and Savannah on the map.”

Businesses and residents affected by filming will receive an initial notification one month in advance. Follow-up notifications will be sent out two weeks and 48 hours prior to filming.

City Attorney Stillwell to retire

City of Savannah City Attorney Brooks Stillwell announced his retirement last week during a regular City Council workshop. Stillwell served as City Attorney since November 2012 and is set to retire this December 1.

Stillwell was also a longtime City Alderman, first elected to City Council in 1974 and continuing in office until 1991.

He served as the Mayor Pro Tem his final year in office.

In his remarks to Council, Stillwell said that he had attended approximately 600 council meetings over his 23 years of service as a council member and city attorney.

“I am honored to have had the privilege to serve the City of Savannah and to work with six Mayors, five City Managers and many council members, state and federal elected officials, staff members and citizens over the years,” Stillwell said.

“I have great memories of the many battles won and sometimes lost over that time, and I know that the City is in a much better economic and physical state today than it was when I started as an alderman at age 28. I look forward to working with my many friends in the city and the private sector in my new capacity as a private citizen going forward,” Stillwell said.

Mayor Eddie DeLoach, said, “I cannot begin to thank him enough for his dedicated service and the love he has shown for the city he calls home.”

The City will conduct a nationwide executive search for a new city attorney.

Stillwell practiced law as a partner at Hunter Maclean, the largest firm in Georgia outside of Atlanta, from 1971 until 2012. He graduated from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1971.

THIS STORY is about guilt. Not that horrible guilt that comes from some monstrously anti-social type behavior.

Nah, I’m referring to that nagging guilt inside us all that is the result of doing the little things that we know that are wrong.

We are all guilty, don’t tell me otherwise.

Maybe you keep your eyes open during the prayer. Fudge on your taxes. Blow your leaves in your neighbor’s yard.

one that just ticks me off. What’s worse is she knows it, so every time she repeats the behavior, it’s premeditated.

Where’s the guilt?

We share a bathroom, she’s got a sink, I’ve got one too. There’s no physical line down the middle of the counter, but we both know where the DMZ is.

We’ve also got more towels than we know what to do with. I’m guessing she has stock in Cannon.

What is her dastardly bathroom habit that I find repulsive and she revels in tormenting me with? She takes her makeup off at night with my towel. Folds it back and puts it on my side.

I wash my face at night, look down and am greeted with a mess of black and brown all over my supposedly clean towel. If I’ve asked her once, I’ve asked her a couple hundred times to please not do it. She continues despite my urging and loathing, and seems to actually get a kick out of it.

Is this woman evil or not? A bathroom sociopath?

Karen swears I’m stuck in 1975. Well I can state unequivocally, that in 1975 no one ever entertained the idea of handling their dog’s droppings.

So is this 2018 version of myself such a bad person because I won’t handle my dog’s waste products?

Actually yeah, and I do get it, the whys and wherefores behind this modern phenomena. A dinosaur yes, a moron no.

I know myself though, it’s a bad behavior that I’m going to continue doing unless persuaded otherwise. So far gentle chiding from my mate, sidelong dirty looks from my neighbors, and my conscience have failed to step up to the plate.

It’s not like I’m the only dog walker who is slack. A couple of my buddies on the same Richmond Drive route I walk are as guilty as I am. Don’t worry guys, I’m not going to “out” you now, but if I do go down, I’m taking you with me.

What’s it going to take for me to come

I mean seriously, if you’re going to put the toilet paper roll on a certain way just to rile your wife, isn’t it fun to just imagine the guilty antics of others?

Guy comes out of the bathroom, you heard him run the water in the sink. Did he wash his hands? Not! Nothing but a ruse to appease our needs.

But does he feel any guilt over it? Obviously we think he should, I mean if we’re at the sink next to him, he at least rinses off.

What gets me, is we continually repeat our actions even though we know they’re wrong. Guess the guilt doesn’t amount to enough to change our behaviors.

Now if the grocery store manager embarrassed you in public for eating a few grapes before checkout, perhaps you then would change your ways, or maybe at least feel a little guilt the next time .

Take my significant other (that would set up a great Rodney Dangerfield joke), she’s got her share of idiosyncrasies. I won’t reveal all her faults, but I’ll tell you

Okay — I’ve hinted at what y’all might or should feel guilty about. I’ve pointed out my woman’s shortcomings, how about myself.

Moi? I don’t pick up after my dog. She’s really not my dog, she’s the Jensen’s (does that let me off the poop hook?).

I never did it with any of my own dogs either, so I guess that doesn’t hold water.

In my defense though, I never let her go on anyone’s property. I also carry a bag and police my route, picking up all refuse (nonfecal) that is.

I just can’t get my mind around (or in this case my hands) the idea of handling my dog’s droppings. We called it dog’s dirt where I grew up in New Jersey.

Tommy Schmidt was always the last kid chosen for a team in my neighborhood. We once made him move a pile off of second base if he wanted to play.

Great story here if I go on to say he played for the New York Mets years later, but sadly while he loved the game enough to pick up the poop, he never was a player.

When did this human’s handling of dog’s dirt start? I understand I am a dinosaur in many aspects of my life. I actually still read

around? I’m like that grape stealer in the grocery store: It’s going to take me being caught in the act, and publicly berated for it.

Now I’ve got some size to me, but don’t be intimidated, I’m really a big wuss. I do know when I’m wrong though, and I’ll take your chastising like a man.

There’s a car coming the other day on our walk down Richmond Drive. “Best get our big butts over, or we’ll be run over” I tell Isabella (a woman that actually listens to me).

So we cross the grass median to avoid the vehicle, as we always do. I put Izzy up at her house (I’ve found borrowing canines has all the rewards and none of the responsibilities of ownership), and I continue down my street to my abode.

As I walk into the living room and tramp all over my wife’s hand made Hereke carpet that she spent a small fortune on in Turkey, I sense something is wrong.

She frowns and asks “what’s that smell”?

As I look down and see the mess I’ve tracked into the house all over my shoes, I realize I am in deep s#*t, (er I mean dog’s dirt). CS

Four arrested in July homicide

Savannah Police detectives have made four arrests in the fatal shooting of 59-year-old Patricia Sabb.

“This was a senseless act of violence that resulted in the loss of a well-respected member of this community due to no fault of her own,” Chief Mark Revenew said.

“We have worked closely with our partners, including Deputy Assistant District Attorney Frank Pennington, to bring charges against these suspects and hopefully provide this family a little relief in a time of tragedy.”

Officers responded to a residence in the 600 block of W. 41st Street just prior to 11 p.m. July 23 and discovered Sabb with a life-threatening gunshot wound. She was transported to Memorial Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

On July 30, Savannah Police issued murder warrants for Patrick Bryant Nelson, 18; Alex Lee Johnson III, 19; Harvey Zihe J. Cooley, 18; and Marvin Marquan Hayes, 19. Hayes and Johnson were also

charged with armed robbery in connection to an incident that occurred earlier this month.

Home invasion suspect still at large

The Chatham County Police Department continues to investigate the Home Invasion in Georgetown on July 31.

“As of this time, the suspect is not in police custody. Police have no evidence to suggest the suspect is still hiding in the wooded area. Residents of the Georgetown area are not considered to be in danger and are free to leave their homes as usual.

Police ask all county residents to be vigilant and to call 911 if they see someone matching the previously given description of the suspect,” Chatham County Police report.

Chatham County Police officers were alerted to home invasion at about 6 p.m. that Tuesday.

“The suspect, a black male approximately 5’10” with a short haircut and a beard, entered a citizen’s home in Georgetown through the back window. The homeowner was present and the suspect quickly fled the home and stole a handgun, cash, and the homeowner’s vehicle,” a black Nissan Rouge, police say.

“The suspect crashed the vehicle between St. Ives and Duke Way, and fled on foot. A search began to find the suspect with the assistance of Savannah Police Department SWAT, Eagle 1, and K-9. Singleton is described as a black male, 5 feet 10 inches, 180 pounds, with short black hair and brown eyes. He normally has facial hair and a goatee.

Singleton is wanted in connection with a recent joint operation conducted by CNT and the Drug Enforcement Administration. The operation resulted in the seizure of 25 kilograms of cocaine, approximately 40 pounds of marijuana, and a large number of firearms to include assault weapons.

Singleton is wanted on a federal conspiracy charge.

Among the gazillion other products and services available from Amazon is the behemoth’s facial recognition software, Rekognition, marketed as providing extremely accurate facial analysis. But when the American Civil Liberties Union gave it a go, the results were startling.

Using Rekognition, the ACLU scanned photos of every current member of the U.S. House and Senate and came up with 28 matches to a mug shot database of people who had been arrested for crimes. The ACLU announced its findings July 26 and admitted it used Amazon’s default settings, to which Amazon responded, “While 80 percent confidence is an acceptable threshold for photos of hot dogs, chairs, animals or other social media use cases,” Amazon would advise customers to set the threshold at 95 percent or higher for law enforcement. The ACLU told NPR that the legislators who were falsely matched were men, women, Republicans and Democrats of all ages. However, the software did misidentify people of color at a higher rate.

Weird Science

You thought you were old? You’re just a twinkle in a nematode’s eye. Russian scientists have revived two ancient, frozen roundworms, or nematodes, from samples collected in Siberian permafrost, The Siberian Times reported on July 26.

The worms, which were found in cores taken from 30 meters and 3.5 meters deep, are believed to be female and 41,700 and 32,000 years old, respectively. After collecting the samples, scientists slowly thawed out the worms, which eventually started eating and moving. Scientists from the Institute of Physico-Chemical and Biological Problems of Soil Science in Moscow believe the nematodes have some adaptive

mechanisms that may be of scientific importance.

Just after midnight on July 22, a couple in Palo Alto, California, were awakened in their bedroom by a 17-year-old burglar with a garment obscuring his face.

Instead of demanding money or jewelry, though, the intruder asked for their Wi-Fi password. According to the Sacramento Bee, the homeowner forced the teen out of the home and called police, who tracked him down a block away and arrested him for felony residential burglary. Police later determined it wasn’t the teen’s first attempt at connectivity. Less than an hour earlier that night, a prowler had summoned a woman from her home to ask for access to her Wi-Fi network also. She told him to go away, and he rode off on a bicycle -- which she realized the next day he had stolen from her backyard. She called police, who recovered the bike near where they had arrested the teen.

• Jeffrey Jacobs, 37, thought he had a great thing going. Last year, when a tree fell on his White Plains, New York, home, he told the owner of a tree service (and big hockey fan) that he was the owner of the NHL’s Boston Bruins, reported The Hour.

Impressed, the tree service owner sent a crew in the midst of a storm, then billed the actual club owner, 78-year-old Jeremy Jacobs, $5,100 for the service. Police in nearby Wilton, Connecticut, heard about the deception when they received a call in May from security officials at a company chaired by the Bruins’ owner. The story sounded familiar: In November, Jacobs had been pulled over in Wilton, and he told officers he owned the Bruins in an effort to get out of the ticket. On July 20, Jacobs was pulled over for using his phone while driving in Poughkeepsie, New York, sent back to Wilton and charged with criminal impersonation.

A weird in-air experience for passengers traveling from the Canary Islands in Spain to the Netherlands on May 29 ended tragically. The Transavia flight was forced to land in Faro, Portugal, after passengers began fainting and vomiting in reaction to the overpowering smell of another passenger, 58-year-old Russian rocker Andrey Suchilin. “It was like he hadn’t washed himself for several weeks,” Belgian passenger Piet van Haut said. CBS News reported that Suchilin had sought medical attention in Spain and was given antibiotics for an “ordinary beach infection.”

Taken to a hospital in Portugal, his condition deteriorated, and he was diagnosed with tissue necrosis. Doctors induced a coma and performed several surgeries, but his wife reported on his Facebook page that he died on June 25. The airline assured fellow passengers that “there has been no risk of infection.”

The Dollyrots’ next big break came in late summer 2006 as they were wrapping the Vans Warped Tour. Joan Jett was part of the lineup, and the bands developed mutual admiration for each other.

“At the end of tour Kelly worked up enough courage to give Joan a copy of our new EP “Because I’m Awesome,” says Cabezas, “and we didn’t hear anything until one Sunday in December when we got a call from one of the people at Black Heart Records. They said they really liked our stuff and wanted to meet us that afternoon at the Morongo Casino.”

When Joan Jett’s people call, you do what they say. So Ogden and Cabezas drove over 100 miles from Los Angeles to Riverside County to talk turkey.

The Dollyrots were signed to Black Heart Records in December 2006, opening the door to a new level of success and opportunity. The album’s title track, “Because I’m Awesome,” garnered industry and fan awards alike as well as placement in a national Kohl’s commercial.

Since 2011, The Dollyrots have released five studio albums on their own label, Arrested Youth Records, and these days work to balance the demands of touring and producing music with managing a growing family. In 2014, Ogden and Cabezas welcomed the birth of their first child, in 2016 their second followed.

They all travel together when touring.

The Dollyrots have been on the road all summer in support of their eighth studio album Whiplash Splash.

Lead singer and bassist Kelly Ogden and guitarist Luis Cabezas have a tight musical bond. The pair are married and have known each other since eighth grade.

That’s when Cabezas confesses to falling in love with Ogden at first sight.

“I chased after her for like four years, but she was Kelly Ogden, beautiful smart, everyone loved her,” he remembers, “I finally convinced her to go to Homecoming with me our senior year and that’s when we were really together.”

After high school in Land O’ Lakes, Florida, the pair went to New College together in Sarasota. There, they excelled in science: “We were both pretty geeky, intense in biology. Kelly has a biology degree, and I have a degree in neurobiology.”

Savannah VOICE Festival presents Gian Carlo Menotti’s “The Telephone”

This 30-minute comedic opera written in 1947 explores a scenario all too familiar and still relevant today— how being able to communicate with someone miles away interferes with speaking to someone in the same room. The opera tells the story of a young woman smitten with the new tech of the day, her telephone. So infatuated is she that her boyfriend can’t get a break to propose to her.

Returning from last year’s festival are baritone James Wright and soprano Meechot Marrero. Marrero is a young rising Puerto Rican star who joined the Deutche OPer Berlin in 2016. Wright has been building a strong opera career with his warm tone and charismatic presence.

The performance features pre-opera entertainment with other telephonerelated pieces.

Cal Wood’s ten-year journey

WHEN Savannah State University’s classes begin on Aug. 13, Cal Wood’s art awaits them in the Kennedy Fine Arts building’s gallery.

“Transition: From One To The Next” is a ten-year retrospective of his work and shows a thoughtful progression of Wood’s artistic style.

“I finished my first painting in 2005 and had my premiere show in 2009, and about five of those are there now,” Wood explains.

Since then, Wood has worked hard—and it shows. Savannah State’s gallery director, Eric Clark, met Wood through a Friends of African American Art meeting with the college. Wood came more than prepared.

“He was super professional,” recalls Clark. “He brought his whole packet with his work, and he reached out to contact me several times. He’s super ambitious and full of energy. His work is in so many different restaurants in town.”

This is Wood’s first solo gallery show, and picking the work he wanted to show was easy for him.

“I like minimal, and I really wanted to do an entire series of that,” he says. “I’m probably going to have to buy a hundred canvases and 10 will work out. I want to pour one drip on the canvas—I lay my canvas flat, I don’t use easels. I love splatters and splashes.”

Wood’s earliest pieces are grids, and through the ten years they evolve to more minimal.

“The layers on layers, there’s a lot going on there,” notes Wood. “There are some where I thought, ‘I don’t like that, I’ll just do a different color scheme.’ One piece, I didn’t show it and I probably technically finished that piece ten years later. I just put it aside. There are only a few laying around that I haven’t finished.”

Wood points out one piece in particular, titled “Window of Opportunity,” as being particularly inspirational to him. One of his earlier grid paintings, there’s one rectangle of bare canvas in the corner of the piece.

“So I hate untitled paintings. I really do! But it has to, as people say, speak to me,” Wood explains. “I make fun of people that say that, so I can make fun of myself, too. I was just looking at the painting one day a year after I finished it and I saw that untouched canvas, and I said, ‘Oh my God, window of opportunity.’ That’s my window

into the painting, my window into being able to talk about that piece. I feel like my layers on layers—that’s history. When you get to know a person, you ask them questions. When you ask questions, you’re peeling back those layers to get to know them.

That’s how I feel about those layers in my paintings. When I look at a heavily gridded piece, I’m looking through it; I’m not looking at the top surface. That’s what that one was about.

“I’ve been thinking about donating that one to my school [in Wrightsville, Ga.] and giving a speech because I want them to know, right then and there, that’s their window of opportunity and make sure they do their best while they’re there. It’s a powerful piece to me.”

Through his artwork, Wood is focused on inspiring others, particularly students.

“Get involved with your local colleges.

Support them,” he urges. “There’s always opportunity for local artists to give back to the community. I feel these students will be looking at my art, studying my art, talking about my art. Maybe that’ll inspire them to be an artist. Some of them may be students who are just in an art appreciation class and they’re not art people.” CS

Paying homage to the popular hors d’oeuvre bruschett was Smith Brothers’ rendition of tangy goat cheese smeared over toasted bread rounds with a topping of candy-like roasted red grapes — an upscale version more suiting for its counterpart of pink wine.

Also among the accoutremonts were Grassroot Farm Fried Pork Belly Skins, basically a pork rind on steroids. The fried pork was served simply with a dusting of salt and pepper.

It’s an appetizer that would have been easy to eat in excess, like when you open a bag of potato chips and cannot stop.

My favorite of the snacks were the Canewater Farms’ Fried Padron Peppers, which upon the first bite tasted like okra —and us Southerners love our okra. The savory

little waxy peppers were tender and with a deep roasted flavor, a heavy dose of flaked salt sprinkled on the outside hit your mouth with a tiny jolt. I found myself going back for more and more because they were so poppable.

The first course, a smoked fig salad with Canewater Farms candied peppers and fresh watermelon atop a manchego cheese crisp was like nothing I have ever tasted.

The figs had a whisper of smoky flavor, just enough to cut through the sweetness. The manchego crisp gave the dish a deeply nutty profile, and the watermelon

freshened everything up.

This was a first course that I could eat again and again. The pairing, Brotte Rosé Cotes de Rhone, was the perfect accompaniment to complement the sweetness of the fig and watermelon, “Rome valley is where this rosé comes from...and is a blend of Grenache and Syrah,” Matt told the table before we devoured the first pairing.

THE ULTIMATE way for a restaurant or store to showcase its skill and imagination is by hosting a supper club, a temporary pop-up restaurant with a specialty menu. A recent new kid on the block of Savannah’s thriving trend of pop-ups is the beloved local Smith Brothers Butcher Shop.

The idea behind their supper club is to not only allow Chef April Spain to experiment and showcase newly inspired dishes but to also feature food from Smith Brothers’ popular suppliers.

I was lucky enough to attend Smith Brothers’ second supper club, which featured Grassroots Farms pork and produce from Canewater Farms. Chef Spain created and prepared the four course meal, which also featured wine pairings with a theme of rosé.

To start the evening, the supper club hosted a cocktail hour filled with various hors d’oeuvres and a paired rosé. The rosé, paired by Matt Roseman with Ultimate Distributing, was Rosé All Day—a sparkling rosé that you could literally drink all day.

The wine “comes from the south of France and is a wonderful way to start the day,” Matt explained to the group. I agree completely.

A big beautiful wood cutting board was covered in various cheeses, all of which can be found at Smith Brothers, and of course a selection of various crackers sat next to the plate.

Thick cut Beetroot Cured Salmon was artfully arranged on the table. Unlike most smoked salmon, this was served in thick slices which lended a heartier feel to the delicate fish. Overall, the smoke was as subtle as the texture of the tender salmon, and the fish itself was lightly sweet.

co-owner Rafe Rivers who explained that they “farm about twenty acres of vegetables over in Darien, Georgia. We are certified organic and we grow vegetables for about 50 restaurants.”

The second course, a play on surf and turf, was a perfect summer dish for any dinner party. Grassroots Farm pork belly and pan seared sea scallops were presented atop a bed of vibrant summer sweet corn puree.

The corn reminded me of the creamed corn that many Southern mothers make, creamed not by the addition of cream but by scraping the husks to extract the corn’s 26 natural milk. The scallops were prepared

the way every local loves them — crusted with a tender center — and the pork belly was rendered ideally.

For the third and main event, a massive slab of slowly roasted pork loin supplied

by Grassroots was presented with velvety polenta from Canewater, grilled peaches, and basil butter. Chef Spain, in a way that I am certain was magic, rendered the fat and skin of the pork in a masterful way creating the crunchiest crust while maintaining a succulent fork-tender center.

The polenta was most surprising, and had a flavor similar to that of peach pie from the addition of vibrant summer stone fruit. The rosé, Le Rocher Des Violettes

Rosé, accompanying the pork was much darker than the rest due to ratio of red wine used in the blend, ideal to stand up to an exuberant main course such as luscious swine.

Though I am certain no one at the table saved room to eat dessert, hesitation was quickly relinquished after everyone tasted how delicious the “stuffed french toast” was. Two slices of buttery lemon pound cake were prepared using the method you would apply to french toast, and stuffed with blackberry compote and rose macerated cherries. Plopped on top, a semisavory herbed cream, Chef Spain’s way to cut through the classically bold cake.

The pairing of port, made from a rose to with the theme, was just as spectacular as the final course itself. Matt explained he picked a port from Portugal, Quinta Do Tedo Rosé Port, that is made from “red wine grapes fortified with brandy, and aged for only six months.”

CHRISTOPHER ROBIN

OO A.A. Milne may have been the one who invented Winnie the Pooh, but it’s actually the spirit of Peter Pan creator J.M. Barrie that hovers around the margins of the new Disney yarn Christopher Robin.

Like Steven Spielberg’s 1991 Hook, a look at how the adult Peter Pan (Robin Williams) managed to reclaim his childhood innocence and exuberance, this picture posits that the adult Christopher Robin (Ewan McGregor), formerly Winnie the Pooh’s human companion, has become so busy with grown-up responsibilities that he has forgot- CHRISTOPHER ROBIN ten how to stop and smell the honey. Yet the Barrie connection doesn’t end there. Christopher Robin is directed by Marc Forster, whose 2004 Finding Neverland centered on Barrie (Johnny Depp) and the family that inspired him to create Peter and the Lost Boys. This new picture falls in between those earlier efforts: It isn’t as artificial and lead-footed as Hook, but it also isn’t as probing or moving as Finding Neverland.

Ever the perpetual money machine, Disney is stumbling over itself in its attempts to make new versions of seemingly every property it has ever owned. While that pillaging may or may not eventually extend to offering live-action takes on the animated likes of The Three Caballeros or DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp, its run thus far has been largely expected and mostly successful, with such gems as Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella and even Pete’s Dragon (the latter actually improving on the original). Christopher Robin, unfortunately, falls short of hitting a similar mark.

Last year’s Goodbye Christopher Robin, which looked at the relationship between A.A. Milne and the son (Christopher Robin Milne) who inspired a literary namesake, was — despite a PG rating — largely made for adults, what with its dark themes of post-traumatic stress disorder and family dysfunction.

Now here comes Christopher Robin sporting that same PG designation, yet

this one is clearly made for family audiences. Certainly, the wee ones will thrill at the sight of Pooh (voiced by Jim Cummings, who’s been essaying the role for approximately 30 years), Tigger (also Cummings), Eeyore (Brad Garrett) and the rest of the Hundred Acre Wood gang being brought to life as living plush toys. Yet will they care to watch McGregor’s Christopher fret over having to fire his fellow employees, or seeing his wife (Hayley Atwell) frowning over the fact that her workaholic husband is never home? Forget the kids: Even adults in the audience might balk at these uninspired interludes, dutifully set up so the movie’s overworked theme of reclaiming childhood innocence can knock them over like a

bowling ball slamming into carefully arranged pins. In fact, much of Christopher Robin feels rote and routine, with the antics of the animals only providing brief respites from the overall drudgery on display. Just because Pooh and Eeyore are often sleepy doesn’t mean the movie itself has to follow suit.

It would be unfair not to acknowledge that those who reserve a special place in their heart for Pooh Bear will in all likelihood absolutely adore this movie. Others, however, might not quite understand all the fuss. Like honey, Christopher Robin is very sweet. Unlike honey, it doesn’t stick.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE — FALLOUT

OOO When it comes to the Mission: Impossible film franchise, there’s the John Woo installment and then there’s all the rest.

That is to say, there’s Mission: Impossible II, the sole bad entry in the series, and then there are the other chapters, all of which have been remarkably consistent in delivering high-caliber thrills.

This designation includes the sixth and latest picture, Mission: Impossible — Fallout, and it’s hardly a knock to state that it’s not quite as compelling as all the other non-Woo endeavors. It may not ascend to any new heights, but it also won’t send viewers home disappointed.

Tom Cruise has spent this series playing Superman rather than Everyman, but here

he takes it a step further: His character of Impossible Mission Force agent Ethan Hunt is now basically God, lording over his domain, bestowing his blessings on the worshipful mortals around him, and remaining indestructible no matter how hard the Satanic emissaries in his midst try to bring him down.

In this entry, Hunt has his hands full trying to retrieve three plutonium cores that were stolen from right under his nose (hey, even God makes mistakes). Negotiations to recover the cores involve releasing master anarchist Solomon Lane (Sean Harris, returning from Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation) from imprisonment, a proposition that leaves Hunt queasy.

Also thrown into the mix is special agent August Walker (Henry Cavill), ordered by CIA head Erica Sloane (Angela Bassett) to tag along with Hunt and his trusted accomplices Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) and Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg).

Clearly, Walker has a hidden agenda, but Hunt is equally as preoccupied with the reemergence of Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), returning to the espionage fold in order to take out Lane.

Folks not familiar with the M:I series will need a scorecard to keep track of the various characters, but then again, would anybody be foolish enough to join an existing franchise for its sixth installation?

Just know that Alec Baldwin returns as IMF Secretary Alan Hunley, Jeremy Renner does not return as IMF agent William Brandt (hey, remember when Renner was briefly being groomed as the new M:I face until Cruise apparently decided he wasn’t ready to put himself out to pasture?), and The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby joins the ensemble as an ebullient black marketer known as the White Widow.

Even as far back as Brian De Palma’s original film from 1996, many of the muscular action set-pieces showcased in this series defy belief, and the ones featured in this latest picture dutifully follow suit.

Yet the exhilaration they promote provides most of them with a free pass — the same can’t always be said for the vehicular chases, and this movie offers back-to-back dashes that eventually prove wearying.

Then there’s the case of Cavill — his character of the mysterious August Walker is intriguing, but he remains such a stiff performer that some of the life is drained from the scenes in which he’s required to convey ambiguity.

Ultimately, though, these are minor quibbles when compared to the energy and exuberance flowing through the majority of the picture. Don’t expect any crippling fallout to greet the release of Mission: Impossible — Fallout; on the contrary, it’s safe to assume that a seventh installment is already making its way to the drawing board. Now whether Cruise will remain in the Hunt remains to be seen. CS 27

CALL FOR ARTISTS FOR THE PHOENIX FESTIVAL The Chatham County Resource Conservation and Education Center will be hosting a found art and reuse celebration called The Phoenix Festival – Celebrating Chatham County’s Revolution in Reuse on November 10.
