Savannah: Small businesses beware

ONE OF the more common sights at City Hall through the years, spanning multiple mayors, is the cringeworthy spectacle of a small/independent business owner standing before City Council, being verbally abused in public for daring to want to invest their money in Savannah.

By now it’s a cliché, but it gets no easier to watch: Individuals, not affiliated with a corporate chain, decide to invest their savings or credit line — or both — in a business venture in one of America’s most lovely cities and vibrant tourist destinations.

They get all the right permits, make sure their zoning’s in order, and genuflect before all the relevant bureaucracies.

And then — often with regards to an alcohol license — some members of City Council put the brakes on the project, insult them for not doing due diligence, imply their goal is to destroy the fiber of the community, and grandstand with a new series of ad hoc, last-minute demands.

All because the small businessperson had the gall to want to put some money back into a community with a 26 percent average poverty rate.

Of course, projects with corporate affiliation continue to sail through often completely unchecked, a long-standing issue which has only just within the past few months received Council attention.

In the meantime Savannah is one of the most famously lax cities in America with regards to alcohol. For example, the City seems to have no problem with Bud Light tents selling $3 quarts of beer on St. Patrick’s Day so young people can walk around puking in the bushes all afternoon.

I don’t recall anyone getting called on the carpet in front of Council for that.

The Stage On Bay is a new venture seeking to meet the demand for a mid-size performance venue bigger than a large club but smaller than the current Johnny Mercer Theatre or the upcoming Westside Arena, which will be about a mile from Stage On Bay’s location in a similarly depressed neighborhood.

Like any such venue it will almost certainly need a liquor license to be commercially viable. Therein lies the rub.

I bring this case up only because I have seen this scenario play out so many times before. It’s like deja vu at this point.

In last week’s liquor license hearing for Stage On Bay, Alderman Van Johnson, in whose district the venue would be, said he has “major issues” with it.

He told CEO Charlie Schmitt, “Good concept, wrong place,” suggesting that Schmitt move it to the other end of the Viaduct in downtown proper.

(This is the same Van Johnson who just weeks before said to applause in Council chambers that the Historic District was becoming “like Disneyland” from unchecked development.)

I’m gobsmacked that Savannah continues to tolerate its elected officials — who often have literally zero business experience — lecturing businesspeople at the granular level about which business model to use, what products to sell, what customer base to target, and what district they can and can’t locate in.

The nearby Hudson Hill neighborhood agrees with Johnson, with residents speaking forcefully against the all-ages venue, its serving of alcohol in a neighborhood with several bars and liquor stores

But I’m not here to agree or disagree with either Hudson Hill residents or Stage On Bay. I’m here to say it didn’t have to go down this way.

And there’s a way to make sure it doesn’t happen this way in the future.

I agree with what Alderman Tony Thomas said at the contentious hearing: Savannah needs to have a coherent policy which balances the very real need of residents to have input, and the very real property rights of small business investors.

The core problem is this: The City continues to approve or disapprove many projects often on a case-by-case, ad hoc basis, with little standard protocol that small/independent businesspeople can consistently depend on.

As it stands, a vocal minority of residents can often have de facto veto power over small business startups in Savannah.

We need a coherent policy which balances the very real need of residents to have input, and the very real property rights of small businesses. already, and the disruption and type of music and clientele it would bring.

The neighborhood also insists their input wasn’t solicited. Schmitt disagrees, saying “I can’t force people to answer emails and phone calls.”

Meanwhile, Schmitt — wisely or not — has already scheduled a concert by the Marshall Tucker Band as the opening event at Stage On Bay, set for Feb. 3.

Mayor Eddie DeLoach, himself a small business owner, challenged Schmitt, saying, “I think you jumped the gun on hiring Marshall Tucker before you got the liquor license you need.”

A visibly angry DeLoach told Schmitt he wouldn’t vote for the license if Schmitt didn’t meet with the neighborhood again to assuage community concerns.

“That’s on you,” the Mayor said, ending with an open threat: “And if you don’t make that happen I won’t vote for it and we’ll have to see you in court.”

To which Schmitt responded, “With all due respect, I see your point and that’s probably what will have to happen” — i.e., taking the City to court.

I’m not a lawyer, but if history is any guide it’s a case Schmitt is likely to win, with court costs borne by us, the taxpayers.

However, rarely does even a vocal majority of residents have any real sway over a larger corporate development.

And now for the issue of the Westside Arena itself. A vastly larger project in scale than Stage On Bay, with full liquor license capability, the Westside Arena when built will have the potential of neighborhood disruption many orders of magnitude greater than Stage On Bay. Yet the Arena project was specifically sold to County voters — who are paying for the project at this moment with the SPLOST one percent tax — precisely because it’s an entertainment venue selling alcoholic beverages, bringing investment money into a blighted community!

The double standard is blatant, the lesson equally so: If you have a corporate or government partner, you get the benefit of the doubt and your investment is framed in the best possible light.

If you’re a small businessperson, you don’t get the benefit of the doubt and your investment is viewed as tainted and problematic, and certainly disposable.

The fact that there’s any small business at all in Savannah continues to amaze and impress me. All independent businesspeople here deserve a medal. Seriously.

March on and on and on

We did it, y’all. We made history—or herstory, as it were.

Collectively, Saturday’s marches have added up to the largest demonstration for the rights of women and the people who love them the world has ever seen.

An estimated 4 million humans in more than 600 cities across the world stood up for reproductive freedom, for racial and LBGTQ equality, for intersectional representation, for the inclusion of immigrants and dignity for the disabled, for affordable healthcare, actual science and honest education.

Together we said “NO” to a registry for our Muslim neighbors, to rape culture, to our precious national parks sold to the highest bidder, to the circus of imbecile billionaires staging their coup over civility and rational thought.

But don’t call it a protest. This global show of solidarity transcended any single issue, an affirmation for our common humanity. No arrests were made, no bodies harmed.

Honeys, this was a lovefest.

I had the privilege of traveling to the heart of the matter in Washington, DC, where so many of us jammed the streets— some unofficial tallies now say more than 1.5 million—that there was no place left to march.

Our group of 12 had risen at dawn to pack the train at the end of the Orange Line with our DC host and former Telfair Museums curator Holly McCullough, and it was already shoulder-to-shoulder at the National Mall when we arrived.

My neurosis tends to trigger in large crowds, and after the anarchic chaos at the inauguration the day before, I admit I was scared, though prepared.

I wore the steel-toed combat boots leftover from my mosh pit days and carried swim goggles in my tiny purse. I Sharpied the number of the ACLU Lawyer’s Guild on 8 my arm with the full expectation of being

teargassed, billy clubbed and/or thrown in jail.

But there was nary a riot gear helmet or an alt-right baseball bat to be found, just a sea of knitted pink pussyhats flooding Independence and Constitution Avenues.

(Thank you to Patty Knight for mine and to all the other yarn warriors who stitched up and gave away over a million of these accessories!)

Our dynamic dozen squeezed its way through the sardine situation, blowing kisses to those who held out hands to help

and put out protective arms for the elders.

There were plenty of men representing, including a dozen teenage boys from Syracuse, NY on a field trip with their AP Government class (do they not deserve ALL of the extra credit?)

The creative banners and signs reflected the breadth of reasons all of us were there.

My top favorites included “Ovary-Reacting? I Don’t Think So,” “We’re the Granddaughters of the Witches You Didn’t Burn,” “You’re So Vain, You Probably Think This March Is About You” and “You Nice White Ladies Are Gonna Show Up at the Next #BlackLivesMatter March, Right?”

There’s no question that Savannah made a yuuuuge statement with our gorgeous paintings by Scott Stanton, aka Panhandle Slim, who supplied more than 300 to the local contingency.

The colorful icons caused a stir everywhere we went, photographed like celebs on a red carpet. Someone marveled at our “mobile art show,” and a curator from the Smithsonian has expressed interest in acquiring some of them for the museums.

We finally made it to the fountain outside the Museum of the American Indian, where we had hoped to meet up with the 300 other Savannahians who came by planes, trains, automobiles and two buses.

We didn’t get to link arms with Linda

Wilder Bryan, Dandy Barrett and other hardcores who rode the highway all night and then back again, but we did find some of our ilk, including Clinton Edminster in a tree and the indefatigable Coco Papy, who served as a state organizer for the march. (There aren’t enough words to extol this woman’s unflagging dedication and work ethic; all I can say is she deserves a three-hour massage followed by a lot of chocolate.)

Our location wasn’t optimal for seeing or hearing the celebs and speeches, and I gave up straining to catch a glimpse of Gloria Steinem, Alicia Keys, Madonna, Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards and other notables on the Jumbotron at the end of the packed block.

“Mostly I just see a lamppost with hair,” shrugged Savannah photographer Molly Hayden, whose portraits of local DC marchers will be exhibited this Sunday’s storytelling event at Trinity Methodist Church along with Panhandle Slim’s nowfamous signs.

No matter, we rallied anyway, pumping our fists along with the call-and-response chant “Show me what democracy looks like! THIS is what democracy looks like!” led by an exuberant eight year-old boy.

And true to the call, everywhere I looked I saw women, men and children of every

The marches of last week have reignited the fire in our bellies, but the long, slow burn is what’s going to count if we are to claim the America we want to be in the world.

Late Saturday evening in DC, long after the crowds had peacefully dispersed, we dragged our tired feet back to the Metro past the Capitol. Housing our nation’s legislative body and built by slaves whose descendants still live among us, it remains at once an architectural marvel and a symbol of a nation gridlocked in conflict.

But witnessing the grand dome shrouded in moonlight and mist, after such a powerful day buoyed by so much solidarity, I could see it not as a bastion of a broken bureaucracy but a cathedral to the sacred notion of liberty and justice for all.

The road to achieving that is so far off, and there are so many wrongs to right, so many obstacles on the path.

And so we’ll just have to keep marching forward into this story, hoisting each other up and over, our love for our country and each other in every step. cs

Now, I’ve seen the comments characterizing those who marched on Saturday as whiny, privileged “snowflakes” in silly hats. Seems to me that someone who doesn’t think he ought to release his tax returns like every other president, bends the ethics rules to appoint his son-in-law to his cabinet and insists upon “alternative facts” when the real ones don’t suit him is quite the snowflake himself, no?

Anyway, enough snowflakes and you’ve got a blizzard. Many of us—did I mention it was FOUR MILLION PEOPLE?—marched Saturday with conscious thoughts of those who couldn’t afford to attend an event, of those too afraid or too beaten down to speak up, and especially for those so entrenched in their own viewpoints that they still can’t comprehend that we are all in this together.

Several conversations throughout the day centered around how to broaden the platform even more, how to invite the disenfranchised and those who may have voted against their best interests back to the table.

While the march was a lovely ol’ time, no one is forgetting that our rights and freedoms are under attack, and preserving them means continuing to forge unorthodox alliances and engage difficult discussions.

It also means we’ve got to stay awake, or as the quote engraved on the wall outside the National Archives puts it, “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.”

Help end human exploitation at Savannah Traffick Jam on Jan. 28 Free workshops and trainings aim to increase reporting and change culture by jessica leigh lebos

Last November, a whopping 83 percent of Georgia voters approved the Safe Harbor Act, which established a dedicated fund to help the youngest victims of sex trafficking.

The overwhelming passage of the constitutional amendment marked progress in the fight against human trafficking locally and statewide, though much work remains to eradicate the factors that make the $32 billion-a-year modern slavery industry possible.

An estimated 20 to 30 million people are currently trapped in labor and sexual servitude against their will around the world. A million men, women and children are thought to be trafficked throughout the United States at any given time.

Georgia has been identified as a human trafficking hotspot by the FBI, and after Operation Dark Knight broke up a prostitution ring in 2014 that put 23 people in jail, Savannah and the nearby I-95 corridor have been under scrutiny as one of the busiest human trafficking hubs in the state behind Atlanta.

Activists, service providers, social workers, business owners, law enforcement officials, caregivers and concerned citizens are invited to explore what roles they can play to reduce human trafficking in the community at the Savannah Traffick Jam, a free, all-day event at Savannah State University Student Union Ballroom on Saturday, Jan. 28.

Organized by Savannah Working Against Human Trafficking (SWAHT) and the Savannah Interagency Diversity Council (SIDC), the Traffick Jam aims to provide education on the warning signs and dispel false notions about trafficking in order to increase reporting of such crimes.

“We know there are a lot of misconceptions around sex trafficking, especially with law enforcement,” says Deirdre Harrison, director of SWAHT. “Most people don’t realize that over a third of underage victims are boys, and the average age that a teen is brought into prostitution is 13 to 15.”

group Tapestri, youth peer mentoring with the teen survivors of Park Place Outreach and a workshop geared towards business owners on posting signs for the National Human Trafficking Hotline. The Rape Crisis Center, Greenbriar and other local organizations will provide resources and information on how to get involved.

Also present will be representatives from iCare, a non-profit that provides medical and mental health services to those traumatized by trafficking and is currently working to build a residential respite for victims in Augusta.

relationships for capital development,” says Harrison, who is also working to ensure that part of the funding collected by the Safe Harbor Act finds its way to a safe house for coastal Georgia victims both male and female.

Georgia State University College of Law professor Dr. Jonathan Todres will deliver the keynote address in the morning, reiterating his message that ending human trafficking isn’t simply a legal issue.

“Law enforcement is essential, but we are not going to prosecute our way to the end of human trafficking,” says Dr. Todres, who has testified before Congress as an expert on child trafficking and exploitation.

“We need to develop a multi-sector response. We need law enforcement and social services, but we also need health care professionals, educators, businesses, the media, and others to play a role. Every sector has a needed skill set and is positioned to contribute to anti-trafficking efforts.”

He counsels that private citizens and employees have a vital role to play in identifying victims and reporting suspicious situations to the national hotline, while business owners can make sure that trafficking isn’t taking place in their organizations or along their supply chains.

“Companies can also contribute innovative ideas,” he adds, describing how in the United Arab Emirates, the government partnered with a Swiss company that developed a robot so young boys would not have to be trafficked to serve as camel jockeys.

“The critical step for any business is to work with anti-trafficking organizations to figure out how your core capabilities can be applied to combat human trafficking.”

Ultimately, he says, prevention must be the goal. The risk factors that allow a person to be coerced or forced into labor or commercial sex activities include poverty, drug abuse and poor education, and addressing those pernicious societal ills will help potential victims avoid the trap.

Shifting the focus to those who buy and sell the services of humans—the johns and pimps—is key. Harder legislation and increased penalties in Georgia have put perpetrators in prison and provided resources (the Safe Harbor Act is funded in part by fees paid by those convicted of sex crimes) though advocates also advise directing efforts towards education and empathy.

“The big thing we’ve got to think about is demand,” says Harrison with an emphatic nod.

“We have to have a cultural shift that says ‘this is not ok.’”

All Savannah Traffick Jam workshops and lectures are free to the public, with continuing education credits offered for social workers and legal professionals for a $50 fee. Other than those in required trainings, participants can come and go as

they please, and child-friendly activities will be provided.

“We would never want someone not be able to come because they couldn’t find a sitter,” assures Harrison. “This may be a dark subject matter, but we’ll have ageappropriate things for everybody.”

Even those that can’t attend Saturday’s event can do their part to fight human trafficking by learning how to recognize the signs and keeping their eyes open. Terrible working conditions, not being allowed to speak for her/himself, and poor health are just a few red flags listed on the National Human Trafficking Hotline website.

The hotline accepted 507 calls last year, and Harrison says the majority came from concerned citizens who saw something suspicious and didn’t let it go.

“Just call the hotline,” she admonishes.

Town Hall on Armstrong/Southern consolidation gets rowdy

Fate of ASU athletics, Greek organizations still in limbo

The consolidation of the two universities is scheduled to begin September 1, 2017. A vote regarding what the new university will look like will be taken the following December.

They had questions on whether or not their scholarships would be honored, or what would happen with those individuals already on a sports team? Will they have to go to the main campus to practice and play?

Clubs and organizations were a scare for the Armstrong community as well. The life of civil rights clubs, academic clubs, Greek letter organizations and more are, in the minds of Armstrong students, at stake.

The panel taking questions — some submitted by text — comprised Shelley Nickle, John Fuchko, Vice Chancellor of the University System of Georgia, Dr. Linda M. Bleicken, outgoing president of Armstrong, and Dr. Jaimie Hebert, president of Georgia Southern State University.

Nickle made the claim that the basis for the consolidation is all about student success/retention, and providing more economic development for the regions of the state.

Until recently, the idea of bringing together Georgia Southern and Armstrong was referred to as a merger, but now it is being explicitly referred to as a consolidation, a word that John Fuchko said is a deliberate one.

“There’s so many positive things that are at this institution and at Georgia Southern, and when we go through this process as we’ve done in the past, we should really say ‘what is the best of both, and how will we bring that together in a way that correctly requires change,” he said.

Brandon Scott is a junior at Georgia Southern majoring in Biology, and like Dr. Hebert, Scott only sees positive things that could come from the consolidation, especially in regards to those interest in attending graduate school.

But what came out of his mouth only upset the athletes even more. “I am not sure, honestly, what the athletic plan is going to look like… But I will tell you this, what I envision in our new institution will certainly include a presence of athletics here on this campus of student athletics…”

Though Hebert’s response was followed with applause from some, some athletes jeered, “why y’all clappin’, he ain’t say nothing.”

But one very important question went unanswered. “What about the coaches?” was yelled from the crowd to Dr. Hebert, and he had no answer.

With Armstrong having close ties with Savannah State University, it is a worry of many that when the name is officially changed those ties will be broken. Bleicken addressed this thought.

“One of the very fine institutions in this city, many of you know, is Savannah State University. So as we are having conversations about what the new Georgia Southern will look like, those voices from Savannah State will also be contributing into this process. Because something that we don’t want to do is to solve one access issue and create another issue for our sister institution,” she said.

When asked exactly what will happen to the clubs and organizations, like most questions asked that night, the plea went unanswered.

“Those questions are not answered at this point, and that should really bring comfort to you. That empowers you to be a critical part of crafting this university that we are at,” was one response.

“I think the concern of Greek life and campus organizations is will we still exist with the merger? As we all know, GSU has its own organizations and different chapters of Greek life. Well, so does Armstrong.

Armstrong has developed so much as far as Greek life and organizations go,” says Erin Lofton, a public and community health major as well as member of the Sigma Tau chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

Whether Armstrong will get to keep their current chapter is unknown, but Erin hopes that both can stay.

By the end of the meeting, after Dr. Hebert attempted to convince the audience what Georgia Southern could provide for Armstrong’s campus, many questions went unanswered, and many people left still upset. cs

“We have a whole generation of young people who feel they’re invisible, and they’re making themselves heard with guns.”

Local businesses and private citizens have already raised several thousand dollars to keep the buyback flush.

Artist Panhandle Slim donated proceeds from a recent art show to the effort, and a Go Fund Me page continues to accept contributions.

While they admit that they can’t reach everyone, Johnson and Trotter say that incentivizing the surrender of weapons means preventing certain tragedy. A few weeks ago, a 13 year-old handed them a .22 —loaded with ten rounds. As promised, he received his cash, though Trotter hopes to bring him and others into the Savannah Youth City fold.

“Our mission is ongoing,” she says.

“Buying back these guns is just one part of a positive cycle.”

Johnson says that he and other council members are pursuing legislation that would allow municipalities to decide whether its police departments can legally collect and destroy guns in the future.

In the meantime, he is keenly aware that crime continues to be a concern for all citizens and hopes the community will continue to support the program.

ACCORDING to the most recent report from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, more than 10 million guns were manufactured in the United States in 2013.

That statistic dropped to around eight million in 2014, and numbers suggest less than four million pistols, rifles and shotguns were produced last year. That’s good news for those working to reduce gun violence.

However, since many weapons don’t expire or become less effective with age (there are WWI-era revolvers still in active use), the accumulated 387 million manufactured in the last century means there are currently more firearms in America than people.

Most of them are owned legally and won’t ever be used in an act of violence or crime. But with over 30,000 gun deaths last year in the U.S. and more than 50 gun-related homicides in Savannah alone, there are guns that pose a threat to the safety of a community.

There are at least 22 less of them on local streets in the last few months, due to a recent initiative that buys guns and destroys them.

“That may not seem like a lot, but it’s 22 murders and suicides that might have been prevented,” says City of Savannah Alderman Van Johnson, who has helped spearhead the program along with Savannah Youth City director Beverlee Trotter.

Johnson says the original plan was to collect weapons and turn them into the police. But given that it’s illegal for anyone under 18 years old or with a felony record to own or possess a gun, such up-closeand-personal interaction with officers might have deterred some otherwise willing participants who would rather avoid it.

Also, police gun buybacks don’t decrease the number of guns circulating in a community. A 2012 Georgia state law prevents law enforcement officials from destroying guns, requiring those acquired and/or seized to be sold at auction if their rightful registered owners can’t be located.

No such legislation stops private citizens from collecting and disassembling weapons.

SCMPD chief Joseph Lumpkin and the City of Savannah appeared with Johnson and Trotter at a November press conference about the gun buyback program, though a press release the following day clarified that the department is not affiliated with the privately-funded program.

Why doesn’t the IRS just send us a tax bill?

Why do we have to fill out a 1040 form?

The IRS knows what most people owe. Why don’t they just send us a bill or a refund? — Scott Henderson SOME big-time politicians have had that same idea. “There’s no reason the IRS can’t send Americans pre-filled tax forms to verify,” one presidential hopeful insisted in 2007. Well, apparently there was some reason, because that same guy spent the last eight years in the Oval Office and you’ll still be fumbling with a 1040 sometime between now and April 15. Circumstances

partially excuse Barack Obama’s failure to deliver on his promise that “millions of Americans will be able to do their taxes in less than five minutes,” what with the economy collapsing shortly before he took office and all. But there’s a simpler explanation for why this commonsensical idea hasn’t prevailed in D.C.: Enough money has been spent to stop it from happening.

If you’re paid strictly in wages and, like nearly 70 percent of Americans, you claim the standard deduction rather than itemizing, you’re familiar with the drill: You get a W-2 from your employer listing what you were paid and how much tax was withheld.

Next (unless you shell out for pro prep) you fill in some blanks, do some math, squint at a tax table, sign your name, drop the form in the mail, and worry that you screwed it up. And you very well may have—the IRS finds more than two million mistakes every year. These are spotted easily enough, because the IRS got the very same W-2 figures, did the same math, and filled out the same form.

All this redundancy can’t really be necessary, right? Sure enough, an alternative system, known as return-free filing, already exists in such forward-thinking locales as Denmark, Sweden, and Spain, where the government basically does just what you propose: they send out a bill for

taxes due—or a refund of overpayment— for the recipient to approve. Even here in the U.S., you don’t have to compute your property taxes yourself, so why can’t you just kick back and wait for the IRS to figure out your income tax?

The closest we’ve come to an official answer to that question was in 2009, the year Obama took office. The Taxpayer Advocate Service of the IRS told Congress that Obama’s proposal was “not feasible at this time.” The government receives the necessary information too late in tax season, they claimed, so a return-free system would delay refunds and anger impatient taxpayers. Which sure sounds like a dodge —is the IRS, the one federal agency even less beloved than the TSA, really afraid people will be mad at it?

You’d figure typical deficit-hawk conservatives would be happy to save the money the IRS wastes every year confronting the American taxpayer’s inability to subtract correctly. And in fact Ronald Reagan himself endorsed return-free filing in 1985.

But small-government zealot Grover Norquist and his group Americans for Tax Reform oppose efforts to streamline the filing system, preferring reforms that “enhance voluntary compliance.” A weaselly phrase, that—no arms would be twisted by offering a return-free option, and completing a 1040 hardly means you’re “volunteering” to pay taxes.

The more likely reason for the resistance is that the proposed set-up would make the tax “simplification” Norquist favors— lopping off upper tax brackets, mainly—a

much harder sell. If you’re trying to paint U.S. taxation as hopelessly burdensome, the last thing you want to see is the IRS transformed into an agency that just mails Americans a refund check every year.

Meanwhile, special-interest groups are in the trenches trying to shoot down return-free pilot plans. In 2005, California adopted a program called ReadyReturn, which allows qualified residents to opt for a pre-completed tax return rather than fill out their own.

The state estimates that the new process has saved millions a year in prep fees and about a half a mil in government administrative costs, and taxpayers who’ve used the service are overwhelmingly pleased.

Thing is, not many Californians take advantage of it—in 2012, only 90,000 out of the approximately one million eligible— and officials complain they’ve had a hard time getting the word out. That’s because software manufacturer Intuit, the maker of the prep app TurboTax, wants it that way: according to a 2013 investigation by the nonprofit journalism outfit ProPublica, the company spent more than $3 million in lobbying and campaign contributions between 2005 and 2009 fighting ReadyReturn.

Intuit didn’t manage to kill the program outright, but the state’s budget for marketing it was cut to a dinky $10,000.

Perhaps wary of incurring the deeppocketed wrath of Big Tax-Prep and its small-government allies, other states have seemingly been in no big hurry to follow California’s example. But the dream remains alive in D.C.—last April, Elizabeth Warren became the latest senator to propose (doomed) legislation introducing return-free filing.

Somehow, I don’t see a lot of progress on this front any time soon. Being evidently opposed to paying taxes at all, our new president seems unlikely to expend much effort on making it simpler to do. cs By cecil adams Send questions to Cecil via straightdope.com

Metro seek man for questioning in death investigation

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police investigators ask the public’s help in locating William Joseph Lee, 27, wanted for questioning in the suspicious death of Barrett Donnelly, 31, on Friday, Jan. 20.

“At about 11:45 p.m. Metro responded to Candler Hospital’s Emergency Room following reports that a male subject believed to be Lee drove to the hospital, left Donnelly, then drove away. Hospital staff confirmed that Donnelly was deceased upon arrival,” police report.

SCMPD investigators seek to question Lee concerning this case. Lee is described as a white male standing 5-8 and weighing 150 pounds. He has short brown hair and wears a thin beard and mustache. Lee is known to frequent the Eagles Nest Drive area of Tybee Island and areas of East

Circumstances surrounding Donnelly’s death remain under investigation. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Man charged with concealing death of father in law

Police investigators arrested Brian Lewis, 44, on Friday, Jan. 20, charging him with concealing a death of another, in connection with the investigation of human remains found on the property he shared with his wife and father in law, Ronald Redding, 67, on Ft. Argyle Road and Leopard Lane.

“Metro responded to the residence at noon to check Redding’s welfare when the remains were located and recovered with assistance from Savannah Fire Department and Southside Fire and EMS,” police report.

Investigators believe the human remains to be those of Redding, who was reported missing to SCMPD on Jan. 20.

Circumstances surrounding Redding’s disappearance remain under investigation. The remains will be turned over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for identification and to determine the cause of death.

“At about 8:45 a.m. Metro officers responded to the scene finding gunshot victim, Patrick Miller, 26, deceased inside of a 2001 Buick LaSabre. Miller’s remains were found Friday morning by a sanitation crew working in the area,” police say.

Detectives believe the nature of Miller’s death to be suspicious and ask the public for aid in determining the circumstances.

Police are investigating a shooting at a house on the 1600 block of West Gwinnett Street that injured Lance Kelly, 24, on Monday, Jan. 16.

At about 11:45 p.m. officers responded to the scene, finding Kelly with a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

“Reportedly, Kelly was shot at the residence by a male suspect who fled in a vehicle. Investigators believe Kelly and the suspect are acquainted,” say police.

Police say the victim is not cooperating.

Metro investigates E. 31st St. shooting

Police are investigating a shooting of a 15-year-old male on Tuesday, Jan. 17 on East 31st Street near Dieter Street.

At about 10:15 p.m. Metro officers responded to the 1500 block of East 33rd Street, finding the teen with a non-life threatening gunshot wound. The victim was transported to Memorial University Medical Center for care.

Reportedly, the teen was injured when shots were fired from a vehicle as he walked on along Dieter Street. “Detectives believe risky behavior involving the teen and suspected shooters to be a factor.

Investigators also believe victim and suspect are acquainted,” police say.

‘Til the wheels fall off’ Tedeschi Trucks Band is going strong

After six relentless years of recording, touring, Grammy nominations, and wins, Tedeschi Trucks Band just struck their best year yet.

The Jacksonville band, founded by guitar hero Derek Trucks and blues/soul queen Susan Tedeschi, bid farewell to a 2016 that included a headlining slot at New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, a six-night stint at New York’s Beacon Theatre, and the release of their third studio album, Let Me Get By. Heralded as one of the year’s best records, the 12-piece band’s latest LP showcases a vibrant mix of soul, electrifying blues rock, and Louisiana jazz eloquence.

The band’s back on the road in the new year and heading to their second home of Savannah. We caught up with Derek Trucks in advance of the performance.

2016 was quite the year for you!

It was a busy one. It was great, it was an intense year all around but I think musically—and I think personally for the band—it was a great year. Everybody grew a lot closer together, and it was the best music we played to date. That’s all you can ask for.

Are there any highlights that are the most memorable?

There were quite a few. Some of the trips overseas were pretty amazing, but the West Coast run we recorded for a film and live record had some pretty great moments. I’m glad we were able to capture that and have some really great moments at the Beacon Theatre.

When’s the live album due?

In spring. We just finished mastering it in

the last few days before we left home. We got vinyl in mail to approve and are getting down to artwork.

How did you decide which show was the one to record?

You keep notes as you go—there are certain songs that were really good—and originally, we were going to do a compilation of the West Coast run, but one of the nights in Oakland ended up being such a good night, top to bottom. We happened to film that night, too, and liked the idea of it being from one show, one night in Oakland.

There’s a continuity and sound that carries through and makes more sense. Then it gets down to spending time mixing it and getting it the way you want it. We don’t edit it or do any overdubs like that but you do spend a lot of time.

Did the audience’s presence impact your decision to use that particular

take? How does that chemistry affect a live record?

Sometimes that connection with audience definitely propels the band, but it really is it’s such an odd, random thing what makes a great night. With twelve people onstage, it’s a lot of energy you have to get lined up, and you never can put your finger on what makes a great show. Everyone knows it when it happens—it’s one of those mysterious things. I wish we had a better handle on how to make them all that way! That’s part of the fun. If every night was just as great, it would maybe get boring. You gotta be able to grind away. It makes the really magical ones that more special.

Y’all did a lot of two and three-night residencies last year. Does that take off some of the pressures of doing a one-off show?

It takes pressure off of traveling and being on the move, but musically it may add pressure to the band in a good way. It forces you to dig deep, work out tunes you haven’t played before, break out tunes you haven’t played in long time. I enjoy that. We got to the Beacon Theatre and had to do six nights, each unique. It really puts the band in a good spot.

You pepper in a lot of classic covers.

What’s the selection process like?

It’s tunes that either Susan or somebody in the band brings to the table and really loves the message of the song or something about it you think the band can add to or do it justice. It’s a fun process; with the horn section and choir, you can do about anything you want!

You released Let Me Get By last year.

How do you feel about it since that time has passed?

I really loved making that record more than any we’ve made to date. We play those tunes quite a bit and they’ve kind of taken a life of their own. I think that’s a good sign. That was a great band record, and it’s definitely the template going forward, but I think it was a great way to kick off the year.

“It’s always nice to check back in where it started—Savannah is like a hometown gig, being in Jacksonville, and we’ve got family up there. It’s a good place to go back to and recheck in.”

I feel that’s what set the band in motion— everybody had a part in the writing and creation of that record.

How do you write together?

We do it in stages. Mike Mattison will come down he and Susan and I will hash out ideas. The rhythm section will show up and start messing with some of the tunes we’ve been writing and we’ll just play.

A lot of ideas just come from setting up and throwing out ideas. It’s a very creative band, there’s never moment anyone’s at a loss.

How do you think this album is distinguished from previous Tedeschi Trucks records?

Always Wanted to

I think, if anything, we wanted to capture what the band does live and what it feels like to live on the road with this band.

We’re starting to capture the personality of the group and individuals more and more. You have to learn to reveal those things in some way.

Including every individual in a 12-person band in the writing of a record must be challenging.

Without it being forced, that’s the part that takes time. Certain things reveal themselves over time and you let it do its thing.

The band’s in a really good place that way now. When it’s time for someone to step up, they’ll do it.

I think everybody was really excited to kick it off. We’d been writing and rehearsing a lot. There were a lot of possibilities and a lot of freshness to it then.

I really think it’s grown leaps and bounds since then. The original idea was there but it took a while for us to really find the strength of what it could be and allow it to do that.

Well, I’ve never produced all the stuff. The average album that I’ve done, there are usually about 12-13 tracks…this started out with 18 tracks—it was going to be massive— then it got cut to 15, then cut to 12.

Lyrically, how did you approach this one?

In March 2016, Dope KNife (Kedrick Mack) found himself onstage in Atlanta opening up for one of his heroes: rapper Sage Francis.

A few months later, he got an email that launched a new beginning.

Mack, a rapper, producer, director, and original Dope Sandwich member, has released several full-length LPs, EPs, and singles of his own, recorded up-and-comers, crafted beats, and shot videos, honing his own recognizable flow and shadowy boom-bap style over the years. When Francis asked Mack to release an album on Strange Famous Records, 33-year-old Mack had an opportunity to present Dope KNife to a whole new audience.

The album is called NineteenEightyFour, a title perfectly fit for the union of personal storytelling, literary digs, and searing sociopolitical commentary. Instead of using samples as a base, Mack called on a stellar crew of musicians, including Matt Duplessie a.k.a. Clandestiny, Broken Glow’s Garrett Deming, Omingnome’s Tony Bavaro, Aaron Fisher, Ceschi Ramos, Jeff DeRosa, Bradley Wilkerson, Tristan Brennis, and Hotplate’s Patrick Hussey to create entirely original compositions.

Longtime Dope KNife followers will find a fresh, raw spirit and unapologetic

consistency in NineteenEightyFour; newcomers will see the portrait of an artist who honed his craft in Savannah and is ready to take it all to the next level.

Mack talked to Connect about his production techniques, bringing back classic hip-hop, and how Dope KNife will greet the world on Strange Famous Records.

You’ve been working on this album for a while.

Yeah, May 2015 is when I started doing the beats and stuff. In January, all the beats were made and it was time to start writing.

And around that time we were still putting out the [collaborative project with Miggs Son Daddy] Happy Thoughts album. When I started making it, there was a bunch of stuff that came out in between. I did the Cult Cyph project, I was working on that KNife “Smash” EP… How did you balance and prioritize all that?

I just put it off because everything else that came out before it was when it was supposed to come out. It was like “I’ll get to it when I can.” By the time I started working on it, I didn’t have anything but that to focus on.

How did you want to distinguish this release from your other work?

I started really, really writing it around February 2016 and wrote all of it together in a one-month span. I knew it was going to be somewhat of an introduction. Normally, when I’m writing music, I’m writing it literally with y’all in mind: ‘Okay, I know who follows my Facebook page, I’m going to put it on Soundcloud, I know who follows me.’ This one, I was writing and approaching with a nameless, faceless audience. I wanted to make it feel introductory, but at the same time, I’m 33, I’m not a new artist. It can come out sounding kind of corny if you’re not a new artist but are trying to pretend you are. So I was trying to find the balance: the majority of people who hear this one out of everything I’ve done don’t know who the hell I am, and it’s going to be their first time hearing what Dope KNife is.

Deciding on NineteenEightyFour being the title, I was born in 1984 and obviously there’s the book. Everybody knows I’m on some, I guess, far leftist political views. I assumed everyone thought if was going to think if I put out an album called NineteenEightyFour, that’s what it’s going to be about. But it’s about making aspects of Orwell more metaphorical. NineteenEightyFour is much more a reference of my age. The subject matter is stuff I felt would represent that.

My approach is, I have a bunch of terms and phrases from the book that I like.

“Memory hole” means one thing in the context of the book—what does it mean to me? It means a literal definition of the two words. Let me make a song taking those memories and putting them in a hole so they don’t stop you from moving forward.

It’s much more metaphorical than it is conceptual. I’ve done concepts before…this is more a character portrait. I like to take that movie director approach…this is definitely my Taxi Driver. There’s a plot to Taxi Driver…but it’s a character portrait, and that’s what is what NineteenEightyFour is about.

Well, that makes a good introduction.

Were you consciously playing up certain elements of your style and character for a new audience?

One of the things Sage Francis told me when he wanted me to get down with the label was that I have a…not necessarily traditional hip-hop style, but there’s a classic emcee element to it. The flow and the rhymes are very much the forefront of

I have a song on there with Ceschi Ramos, the head of Fake Four, Inc….I remember having a conversation with him almost seven or eight months after I started NineteenEightyFour.

I was like, “What do you think I should do next?” He’s like, “I think the next thing you make, do it less boom-bap and more experimental.”

I thought Iconoclast was

super-experimental and drastically different from what I do! As he said that, I was having conversations with Steve [Baumgardner] and Miggs: “I think the next thing I do is going to be some unapologetically boom-bap hip-hop shit.”

When I was younger, I used to be a lot more eclectic, or pretended to be. If you asked me what I listened to, it’d be like “I don’t even listen to rap, I listen to everything.” That was cool back then, but

hip-hop is as legit a form of music as anything else. It can be just as experimental or just as edge-bending as anything else and it can be primarily based in rap…that’s why I’m really into Run The Jewels.

I wanted to make something reminiscent of the sort of stuff I grew up listening to in the sense that it was all rap music.

After first 10 songs, were recorded, I thought this could be one of the illest throwbacks. Every song is based in the principles of break beats samples, basslines, and rap.

Do you like it being called “throwback?”

Not really, to be honest. The sentiment has been cheapened. I don’t want anyone to think I’m trying to imitate a sound that long since has had its time. It’s just drawing inspiration from what you grew up listening to as opposed to what’s contemporary.

At the end of the day, everything’s been done… it’s just a matter of putting your own twist on stuff, that’s how you end up creating something that is new or sounds new. If you go into it like, ‘I’m about to revolutionize the game with my greatness,’ that’s how you spend a lot of time staring at a blank piece of paper. At the end of the day, I just try to make something fun to listen to.

You brought in local musicians to build your samples.

I had never done anything on a label, so one thing I was worried about is that I’m a sample-based producer. When you’re putting out a mixtape on Bandcamp for people that come see you at the bars, it’s different.

I just didn’t want any problems down the line, so since I’m pretty formidable with sampling, instead of sampling from old records, I know all these musicians, I’ll sample from them.

What was it like building those tracks?

It’s a lot easier for me…I was building up songs by the instruments individually. If I want to sample bass lines, I’m only listening to bass. You’re layering it up to where I’m very confident I could get a guitar player, bassist, drummer and could play the whole album out. I wanted it to sound like it was organic and it didn’t sound like it was just a drum machine making all that stuff, but at the same time make you wonder. That’s why I really like The Roots…you listen, it sounds like someone’s there with an MPC. It doesn’t have that band quality to it, but live people are playing. I wanted to have that sort of sound without having a band so it could be reverse engineered, in a way. CS

LITZ melds funk, jam, go-go, soul, and electronica to create their own prog sound. Using keyboards, saxophone, flute, bass, drums, guitar, percussion, effects, and vocals, the Gaithersburg, Maryland band is fueled by the chemistry of the brothers Litz—Austin, Logan, and Mike—at its center. The sibs are joined by Justin Robb, Nick Thrasher, and Will S to deliver face-melting riffs and deep grooves that will have audience members shaking their hips all night long.

The Charlie Fog Band & A Lowcountry Boil Benefitting HUGS @Tubby’s Tank House

Get elbow-to-elbow with your neighbors and friends to peel some shrimp and raise money for HUGS (Heads-Up Guidance Services).

Tubby’s Tank House has organized a fundraiser for the Lowcountry non-profit, which provides therapeutic and vocational counseling to disadvantaged children and adults. HUGS’ primary fundraiser was cancelled due to Hurricane Matthew, so Tubby’s is throwing an unforgettable bash so the organization can continue providing their services.

As you peel shrimp and nosh potatoes, corn, and sausage, The Charlie Fog Band will get the crowd going. Savannah’s beloved Grateful Dead tribute band plays everything from the hits to the deep cuts.

With 14 studio albums under his belt, critical acclaim, recognition from the likes of Emmylou Harris, Wilco, Steve Earl, and Lucinda Williams, and many, many miles logged on the road, Malcolm Holcombe is a North Carolina songwriting treasure.

Holcombe’s gruff and smoky, welcoming rasp carries insightful stories and evocative poetic turns complemented by guitar fingerpicking, strings, and an artistic presence that demands attention.

In February 2016, Holcombe released his 14th studio album, Another Black Hole, produced by Grammy winner Ray Kennedy, who called Holcombe’s delivery “a primordial power full of grit, spit and anthropomorphic expression.” Longtime Holcombe collaborators Jared Tyler, Dave Roe, Ken Coomer, Tony Joe White, Future Ban, and Drea Merritt contributed their talents to the record with dobro, baritone guitar, banjo, mandolin, vocals, bass, drums, and percussion.

For a career-spanning introduction to Holcombe’s work, dig into The RCA Sessions, a retrospective collection released in 2016 that features 16 cuts from 1994 to 2014.

Fans of real-deal country music, blues, and honest, hard-edged folk music, admirers of John Prine’s style of storytelling, and people drawn to shadowy American heroes like Tom Waits will all find something to love in the Holcombe’s intimate and raw stylings.

ART HAS always held the power for artists to comment on our world. From Diego Rivera’s murals to Banksy’s street art, artists keep their fingers on the pulse of current events.

As Trump’s new administration begins and more people feel disenfranchised and helpless, art is becoming even more necessary to both express and protect ourselves.

Chicago artist Nick Cave’s soundsuits were created to protect its wearer from the outside world and make a statement with the sound it makes.

Cave’s eponymous exhibition opens on January 27 and is, to date, the largest presentation of his work in Georgia.

Cave’s soundsuits are, quite literally, large suits intended to make sound when worn. There won’t be any performances with the suits on, but there are two videos displaying how the suits are used, particularly in dance.

“The first soundsuit was made in 1992, and it came out of this social response,” explains Rachel Reese, associate curator of modern and contemporary art at the Jepson.

When Cave, an African American man living in Chicago, learned about the Rodney King beating and riots, he felt particularly vulnerable and made his first soundsuit out of twigs in response.

“When he put the suit on and danced, the suit made a sound, and a light went off in his head,” Reese says. “The suit could protect the wearer from outside culture, shield someone’s race, gender, or class. You can be anyone while you’re wearing this suit.”

Cave, a skilled dancer with Alvin Ailey’s American Dance Theater, uses the power of sound to create soundsuits for all different purposes and situations.

“They give some insight into his headspace,” Reese says. “There’s a suit made out of yarn that’s very soft and quiet, versus one made out of brocade fabric, highly sequined and shiny and fantastic and baroque.”

Cave creates his soundsuits from one central element and works outward. One of the suits on display at the Jepson is a response to the Trayvon Martin killing—the suit is an ornamental crochet that covers the wearer in a hood.

“In a way it’s sad that it’s 25 years later and we’re in the same cycles, but I think that’s what art is for and why it’s always relevant,” Reese muses.

One soundsuit Reese singles out is a seven-part suit entitled “Speak Louder,” made in 2011 and featuring mother-of-pearl buttons and sequins. The suit connects seven wearers together and has amplifiers at each wearer’s head.

“It really invokes the kind of collective agency that people have when we gather together,” she notes. “Sometimes we think

about the soundsuits as singular, and these are definitely a community. It shows what happens when people get together, what we can harness through collectivity.”

There won’t be any performances with the soundsuits on, but Reese says there will be two videos running on rotation that show how the soundsuits are activated by movement.

“You can enjoy the suits as fashion, costuming, a more cultural tradition, Carnivale or masquerade or African ceremony, or performance art or identity politics,” Reese explains.

“It’s so multilayered; I really respond to artists who are like onions.

You can peel back and find those layers. It speaks about how we construct identity, how artists have an important role in activism today.

The first laugh: Savannah Comedy Fest

Inaugural celebration welcomes superstar comedian Michelle Buteau, sketch, improv, and more

This weekend, comedians from across the United States descend upon McDonough’s to take over the cozy pub’s stage and leave Savannahians in stitches.

We’ve seen festivals that emphasize comedy ‘round these parts in the past, but The Hostess City’s never hosted something quite like the inaugural Savannah Comedy Festival.

“The full purpose of the Comedy Fest is to bring in what we think are awesome, cutting-edge comedy shows,” says cofounder John Brennan.

“I’m such a comedy geek, and I think Savannah has a really fun comedy scene of great local comedians,” fellow founder Brianne Halverson says. “But I wanted to bring more people in from outside Savannah. I’m such a fan of Stopover and Savannah Music Festival, and we wanted to do something like that for comedy.”

To kick off their first fest, the organizers have called in a multitalented crop of funny friends and cohorts from all across the comedy world. Savannah Comedy Fest is about more than stand-up: there’s sketch comedy, improv, musical comedy, and much more.

Brennan and Halverson are very excited to welcome headliner Michelle Buteau. In addition to a hysterical Comedy Central special, Buteau’s been cracking folks up on popular shows like Key & Peele, The Eric Andre Show, The Late Late Show, or as cohost of VH1’s Big Morning Buzz Live with Nick Lachey. She’s is no stranger at VH1, 28 having appeared on the I Love The… series

and Best Week Ever numerous times.

Musical comedians Squirm & Germ bring high energy and lots of fun. Their videos have been featured on CollegeHumor.com and the NYC duo has shared the stage with Reggie Watts, Kristen Schaal, Colin Quinn, and Arden Myrin.

Charleston’s Nameless Numberhead returns to Savannah with their brand of absurdist dark comedy.

Vernon Moses, a sketch duo featuring Jon Antoine and Deshawn Mason, blends pop culture references, life experiences, and eccentricity to their set.

Savannah Comedy Fest is also home to several long-form improv teams, including Big Dicktionary, Selfie Schtick, and Storck & Carey.

Look for locals Front Porch Improv and Mobb Line, SCAD’s mainstage improv company, reppin’ the home team.

Selecting performers who represent a variety of comedy styles was a very conscious decision for Savannah Comedy Fest’s organizers.

“Our vision is having interesting people who are doing all kinds of comedy—edgy, interesting, absurdist, weird, fun, cool comedy—that’s the goal,” Halverson says.

“Right now, I think the improv is all short-form in Savannah, and we’re trying to do long-form like you see in New York, L.A., and Chicago. And we’re definitely going after sketch, because there’s no sketch scene in Savannah.”

“To [the audience], comedy is just comedy,” Brennan explains. “They don’t care if they’re doing standup, improv, or sketch, as long as they’re funny. I’m excited to see the responses to the different variations of what improv, sketch, and standup is.”

cutting-edge, funny comedy? We have really good comedians here, and it’s time for a bigger scene, for the people who go to Charleston and Atlanta to come through Savannah. We want everyone to connect, celebrate, and be inspired.” CS Both Brennan and Halverson hope that the festival is the beginning of something great for Savannah.

“This is something we’d like to grow and get bigger, but even if it doesn’t, we want an opportunity for the out-of-town stuff to come here,” says Brennan. “And the response has been great.”

Halverson hopes that the event helps Savannah continue to grow as a creative hub.

“I love that Savannah is an artistic community, but a lot of it is very visual,” she notes. “The music scene has come so far in the last five years, and I think it’s time now for comedy. Why can’t we have

On how she got into comedy:

I was editing for the news and I had coworkers who were like, ‘You’re so funny, you should do comedy!’ I was like ‘Comedians? They sound terrible, they always complain about how broke and high they are. I’m happy! I don’t understand.’ And then I did it and was like, ‘Oh shit! This is wonderful, this is super-fun!

Who needs therapy when people are just laughing through your pain?’

On honing her style and finding her audience:

I feel like I’m still doing it! I guess it’s sort of like spaghetti: you throw subjects out there and see how people kind of behave, then obviously people will as you to do their shows, and you’re like, ‘Okay, I guess you guys are my demographic.’

You just never know, though. I get flown all over the country to just perform for really rich people in Wyoming— it’s like, ‘Oh, you gotta fly in the diversity because you don’t have it here.’ Then I’ll do like, a gay room in Idaho, but I’m not gay, you just need some love. I get it.

It’s weird—I guess I’m still learning, and at the end of it, people are just people. They want to laugh and forget their problems. It’s the same as paying so much money for cable: please just entertain me and let me forget about my problems.

On adapting to different roles and styles of comedy: It’s so funny, any time I get a job that’s not straight-up standup, I ask, ‘What do y’all need? What do you want me to

do?’ and 90 percent of the time, they say, ‘Just be you!’ That’s the only thing I know how to do right now. I mean, I think it’s always important to be thoughtful about what you say and the work you’re going to do, even if it’s for another character. I think, really, you have to be responsible with your words, and I also think about not overthinking it. I think a lot of people try to get things right all the time, and it’s about doing it and having fun.

On her Eric Andre Show appearance:

There’s no words to describe when your friend Eric Andre is like, ‘Come do this bit with me,’ because I’ve known him for a while, and his sketches are his own thing, over-the-top, crazy, weird, wild. And the first time I showed up to do his show, I thought we’d have some rehearsal...they just rented a restaurant and were like, ‘Girl, please!’ And we just went in willy-nilly, one-take sally—‘Do your thing, we’ll get all these reactions,’ and it’s like, ‘This is insane!’

I don’t know how that boy goes out and does all that stuff. I’d need a nap, a hug, and a Gatorade!

What she’s looking forward to in 2017:

I’m looking forward to helping the country not be as divided. I’m looking forward to figuring out a way to deal with internet trolls, and I’m working on a new album, but I’m still sharing my album Shut Up on Comedy Central Records. I got LPs made, so it’s nice to have a hard copy. I feel like my next album, I’ll just start selling CHS tapes and go full vintage! CS

Savannah Stage Company’s improv troupe presents its first musical by anna chandler

If you know Savannah Stage Company (SSC), you know that imagination and bravery are paramount to the team of local storytellers. This weekend, SSC’s improv troupe, (it), pushes further than ever before with one of the most creative formats available for the stage.

“For our fifth season, we had to figure out how to challenge ourselves even more,” explains SCC Artistic Director Jayme Tinti. “[We asked], ‘What can we do to highlight our values?’ An improv musical obviously takes a lot of bravery.”

Enter It’s B.I.G.: The Improv Musical, an original production that the audience coscripts. With four performances over the weekend, no two will be exactly the same— and that’s the magic of it.

Though anything could happen, It’s B.I.G. has a loose framework to move the show along.

“There are other improv musical formats out in the world that we spent some time looking at,” says Tinti. “But what we needed to happen was to create our own format. It’s a 10-12 song musical, and every song is in a different style of music. The first song might be a hip-hop song, the other may be a bluegrass song, the third an opera song. Audiences get to choose those styles of music beforehand, then the audience will choose a protagonist from the troupe and get to name them.”

After selecting a team member as the musical’s lead, audiences will suggest a dream, or motive, for the character— maybe the character aspires to be an astronaut, or always wanted to travel to the Great Wall of China.

“Then we have an internal structure,” Tinti continues. “We study a story spine 30 and basic elements of how to tell a story

No. It’s, ‘What’s the hardest thing we can think of? An improv musical.’” and build a story, so that’s what we’ve been working on, plus all the music and skills of improv. There’s a lot of structure, and then we get out there and we say, ‘Let’s do this!’” (it) already utilizes music often, from their recent five-song mini-musical to everyday rehearsals.

“We’re taking something that we already sort of do and then taking that to ten,” Tinti laughs.

Since the audience could suggest any style from trap to bossa nova, the musical performers must improvise, too.

Keyboardist Cyd Prather and guitarist Ellen Sherrod have to act quickly and work together to create a comprehensive soundtrack for the actors to sing over.

According to Tinti, the production has pushed (it) members in extraordinary ways.

“You’ll see someone grow moment to moment,” she admires. “That’s sort of what this is all about. We didn’t set out saying, ‘Hey, what can we do really well? An

improv musical!’ No. It’s, ‘What’s the hardest thing we can think of? An improv musical.’ Growth is a huge part of the company and is one of our values.”

In addition to plenty of rehearsing and practice, (it) received a workshop from fellow Savannah troupe Front Porch Improv.

“It’s an awesome resource to have other professional improvisers who we can turn to and say, ‘Hey, this is something that you guys do really well—can you come help us?’” Tinti says.

It’s B.I.G.: The Improv Musical will be performed right in the heart of the Starland District at Starlandia Supply’s new performance space, The Space Station. The multipurpose venue is SCC’s new mainstage and rehearsal space, and the troupe already feels right at home.

“The Space Station has been a gamechanger for us,” Tinti attests. “We’ve had a lot of location issues…and there are a lot more of us than there were three years ago. To be able to rehearse and perform in

the same location is a luxury we’ve never had, and it’s proving to be really helpful in thinking about where our bodies are in space much earlier in the process. It’s been really nice to find a home.”

And remember, audience—you’re in this, too! The energy and participation of attendees is crucial to a great improv performance, and (it) encourages everyone to get involved (and to get there early to get good seats and a couple free beers before the show begins).

“Try to be inspired by our bravery,” Tinti urges. “Maybe if you go to an improv show and never say anything and have suggestions running in your head, come be brave.

We are failing and succeeding right here with you—we are not experts on this! We are all seeking bravery.” CS

I’M GOING to write something terrible about Georgia’s wonderful barrier islands. It might get me some mean looks here and there. It’s not even true. How about truthy?

Our dear islands, at least the more natural and remote ones, aren’t very colorful.

Tybee, yes. But Wassaw, Ossabaw, Blackbeard, etc.? Woodsy, sandy, green, blue or brown.

It takes a true artist to pull color out of our landscape. And photographer Jill Stuckey is a true artist indeed because she does it without paint, brushes or canvass.

The instruments of her rainbow are a camera and computer. “I mess with them,” she says of her photos, recently published in a book, “Ossabaw Island: A Sense of Place.”

paintings.” So she takes several photos of a place, in this case, a state heritage preserve saved from development, in different light.

And she smashes these images together using software to render a masterful mix of art and reality that the eye doesn’t really see. It’s called high dynamic range photography.

“A friend of mine from Australia turned me onto it,” she says of the technique, rich in history and complex in execution. “I love deep rich, colors.”

Stuckey turns an ordinary sea shell into a flame of red and blue. She turns plain grass into a living creature. She beams the marsh into an alternate universe.

It’s like when the farmhouse crashes in the Land of Oz and you see things like you’ve never seen them before. Only Ossabaw doesn’t have lions and tigers and bears.

“It’s hard to get the donkeys and the dogs and the other animals to remain still,” she says. “For high dynamic range, you need about 20 seconds of stillness.”

“Ossabaw Island: A Sense of Place” beautifully captures the island’s wildness and calm, things that make it so special.

But I can’t write about island color without Roger Parker.

The book’s other subject, Stuckey’s boyfriend, Parker is known as Georgia’s “saltwater cowboy,” a man who has worked on the island for 65 years. You know he has stories!

“I always felt like the island belonged to me,” he says. “I looked after everything.”

An island caretaker, he killed deer, trapped hogs, built fences, herded cattle and fixed roads.

He lived in a small cabin, birthed donkeys, cleaned up after horses, repaired cars and waited for a weekly boat to come with groceries from the mainland.

As hard as island caretaking sounds, Parker doesn’t have anything bad to say about remote island living, except for occasionally running out of dairy products.

“I didn’t like milking no cow, uh uh,” he says, noting the taste of raw milk and the

bovine temperament. “By the time you get it half full, she’ll put her foot up and step in it.”

Parker started working for the Torrey family in 1951 when the island was private. When Sandy Torrey West sold it to the state for conservation in 1978, he worked for the state.

He retired when he couldn’t do it anymore, physically. But he still gets back any time he can. “Anybody that worked on Ossabaw Island couldn’t say that they didn’t enjoy it.”

Jill met Roger when she came to the island as part of her career in rural development. She helped to get electricity to the island, obviating the need for gas-bybarge for generators.

The couple’s book, co-written by Evan Kutzler and featuring a forward by Jimmy Carter, a close friend of Jill’s, paints the island in brilliant colors, artistically and culturally.

Big Boy Cookies hit the road

FOOD TRUCKS are something we’ve been waiting for in Savannah for quite sometime. As of late last year, the city took a huge leap forward in providing a platform for food trucks to really show what they can bring as an industry.

It has required a lot of dedication, patience, and flexibility from all parties involved to figure out a way to create this window of opportunity. I’ve always understood how influenced by tourism Savannah is, but I’ve also been under the impression that that scope of tourism was destined to change at some point.

Art is a very large industry here in Savannah, mostly driven by SCAD, but there isn’t a strong enough network to catch all of the talented graduates and allow their talents to really impact Savan34 nah in a real way.

There is a strong force of independent strong-willed entrepreneurs who are dedicated to helping turn the tide in favor of the future. Food trucks are one of those industries that’s a catalyst for other things around it.

Movie sets, events in the park, holidays, private events, food trucks will be an element that we all can relate to and consistently get behind. There is a ton of upward mobility in our city, and food trucks, once in full effect, will be the missing link in the transition of the C-Port.

Fortunately I exist in a unique space where I get the opportunity to see some

of the up and coming food trucks before they’re exposed to the public. What I like most about this subset of our food industry is the creativity behind each truck.

Because each one is so personal, it allows everyone to have their own niche, which is why I think there has been such a camaraderie around the food trucks.

Every truck is invested in each other’s success because an industry, allows everyone a bigger piece of the pie. If you could have a Latin food, a wood-fire pizza, and/or a fresh baked cookie truck provide food for your holiday party or your senior art show, wouldn’t you?

A lot of people have already answered that question with a resounding yes.

As the new year is upon us, and everyone is a few weeks into their new dietary lifestyles (I’m right there with you people, trust me), I figured I would present you with a story that could potentially derail all of work you have done.

This story comes from another one of our neighboring cities, Statesboro, but this time, you can actually catch them in Savannah from time to time when the city has a public event.

Womack and his wife Hannah Womack, who decided to trust their gut and chase their dreams of serving some of the best cookies you mind could ever dream of.

Their story is interesting, because before chasing this dream neither of them had much of any commercial kitchen experience and came from nursing backgrounds.

“I was always in the kitchen as a kid, and loved to help my grandma,” Jonny said. “I loved nursing, but after a couple of rough scenarios, life brought me towards sales, which is something I grew up around most of my life.”

After bouncing around in the marketing/sales arena for a while, Jonny formed the idea “to create my personal sales signature which started with mason jars full of candy, and evolved into freshly baked cookies.”

I’m sure you can draw the line of the narrative from this marketing sales signature into a full fledged business on which they have plans to continue to expand and feed cookies to as many people as they can.

Jonny decided to chase what meant a lot to him, and fortunately for him he had a family who wanted to support him and back his dream. Having a dream is one, having the backing is another. But actually executing and creating a successful business is an entirely different thing.

As a food truck, Big Boy Cookie continues to impress the masses with their talent for baking, while more and more people line up to try these delicious treats. The future looks bright for anyone who takes the time to finesse their skills in order to have the capability to knock everyone’s socks off; but especially Big Boy Cookie.

On February 4, Southbound and the Savannah Music Festival will celebrate the release of Rollin’ & Tumblin’ with a party that features some great music, good food and some select beers from Southbound.

Rollin’ & Tumblin’ shares a moniker with a song first recorded here in Georgia

by Hambone Willie Newbern in 1929. In its 90-year history the song has been covered in one form or another by a wide range of musicians including Charley Patton, John Lee Hooker, Sunnyland Slim, Cindi Lauper, and R.L. Burnside just to name a few.

Carly Wiggins, co-founder of Southbound Brewing, puts it this way: “We are thrilled to continue our partnership with the Savannah Music Festival and to host the line up release event here at the brewery. Before Muse Arts Warehouse is gone for good, things are gonna get a little surreal.

Psychotronic Film Society of Savannah has utilized Muse as a venue for years now, and founder Jim Reed is eager to bid farewell to the multipurpose arts space with a classic: Alejandro Jodorowsky’s 1973 masterpiece The Holy Mountain.

“The Holy Mountain is one of the very, very few truly infamous cult movies of all time,” Reed shares. “It shocked and bewildered audiences when first unveiled at the 1973 Cannes Film Fest, and later played for an amazing 16 months straight at New York City’s iconic Waverly Theatre.”

The Holy Mountain follows the mindaltering journey of an alchemist leading a Christ-like figure and seven materialistic figures, each representing a planet in the solar system, to The Holy Mountain, where all aspire to achieve enlightenment and attain immortality.

The preparation for filming The Holy Mountain is as infamous as the film itself.

Before the principal photography began, Jodorowsky and his wife spent a week with no sleep, guided by a Japanese Zen master.

Jodorowsky had his primary cast members spend three months doing Zen, Sufi, and yoga exercises under the instruction of Oscar Ichazo of the Arica Institute; after the training, the group lived together in Jodorowsky’s home for a month.

Ichazo also recommended the director take LSD for spiritual exploration, and Jodorowsky administered psilocybin mushrooms to his actors during the shooting of a particularly iconic scene.

“It is an unqualified masterpiece of extremely personal filmmaking from one of the most visionary and challenging artists and spiritual figures of our time,” Reed praises. “Acolytes of Jodorowsky’s work in film, comics and the metaphysical realm find illumination and joy in his unique blend of the avant-garde and what Joseph 38 Campbell termed ‘The Power of Myth.’ He

is a true one-of-a-kind genius, and his individuality and ceaseless promotion of the notion of radical self-examination merged with an abiding fixation on the absurd and the extreme are a gift to the world.”

In years past, it’s been difficult for film buffs to get their paws on a copy. After its famed run at the Waverly Theatre, The Holy Mountain was locked in a vault and removed from circulation due to a bitter feud between Jodorowsky and the film’s distributor. Naturally, the film’s reputation and notoriety grew over those 30 years in hiding.

“All most anyone who heard of the film could find of it were a handful of still images, a brief plot synopsis and a few handfuls of reviews by critics lucky enough to have seen it,” Reed recounts.

“This was in the pre-internet days, which made it nigh on impossible to even track down such things. It took money and time and diligence to do so, which meant only hardcore, adventurous film enthusiasts and collectors such as myself would even attempt such a task.”

And attempt Reed did. About 20 years ago, he nabbed a used Laserdisc copy of the film—the only official home video release it received anywhere in the world at the time. Unfortunately, most of the nudity was censored, as was Japanese custom at the time, and the whole film boasted giant, non-removable Japanese subtitles.

“Despite those impediments, it was everything I had hoped it would be and more,” Reed shares. “It was mesmerizing, phantasmagoric, hilarious, confounding,

self-indulgent, violent, grotesque, provocative, beautiful, transformative and, ultimately, unforgettable.”

Fans of the film are eager to catch the beautifully restored Holy Mountain on the big screen. If you’ve never seen it, the first viewing is unforgettable.

“I first saw it quite by accident,” Muse’s JinHi Soucy Rand recalls. “I was recovering from surgery around thirteen years ago, and was instantly mesmerized. It was unlike anything I had seen before, and there was no telling which way it would go.

I kept thinking, ‘This can’t be happening,’ and ‘How did they do this? How did they get away with this?’ Which, I suppose, are all unusual things to say about a film that is ultimately kind of funny and sweet. It may have been my fevered state, but I immediately became obsessed with Jodorowsky, I watched his first three films in this order: The Holy Mountain, Fando et Lis, and then El Topo. All backwards and out of order of production, really. But by doing that I felt that I could see more clearly one artists take on the maturing and vulnerabilities of a man at different ages in his life. I would recommend seeing them and his films since in order.”

She thinks the film is a perfect cinematic farewell to Muse.

“I think Jim Reed knew this would be a film that I would be thrilled to have shared on our big screen,” she says. “There really are some impossibly beautiful shots. Jim and I have become great friends over the years, and I am a strong supporter and happy member of The Psychotronic Film

When Rand acquired the Muse space, she knew she wanted to screen unusual, hard-to-come-by films. She immediately called Reed in to create a screening space and show indie films and rare picks.

“I would not have been able to bring so many wonderful and important motion pictures to town for special, exclusive engagements were it not for that support, encouragement and co-sponsorship,” Reed says.

“Knowing this would be the final film shown in that space, I wanted to not only present something I thought folks would really appreciate having the chance to experience, but something that would also hold personal resonance with myself and Muse’s indefatigable leader JinHi. I wanted to ‘go out with a bang,’ so to speak—and what better way to do that than with one of the greatest examples of both psychedelic and psychotronic cinema ever made?” CS

Michael Keaton delivers a performance that’s among the year’s finest in The Founder

THE FOUNDER

/// Harvey Weinstein, the controversial studio head who’s so skilled at manipulating Oscar voters that he could probably score a Best Actor nomination for that untalented imbecile Rob Schneider if he ever put his mind to it, seems to have taken a rare misstep with The Founder.

Releasing films for year-end, one-week runs in Los Angeles to qualify for copious movie prizes is a tried and true tradition, but between reportedly holding those early Founder screenings for a select few insiders and doing nothing to generate any buzz, Weinstein appears to have allowed this one to die on the vine.

It’s been a complete no-show during awards season – in fact, according to IMDb, its only mention has been from something called the AARP Movies for Grownups Awards, not exactly an outfit that gets plastered across posters and ads.

Harvey probably isn’t shedding any tears – The Weinstein Company has a strong Oscar contender in Lion – but it’s a shame The Founder has slipped through the cracks, since star Michael Keaton delivers a performance that’s among the year’s finest.

With a script by Robert Siegel, who himself was cheated out of an Oscar nom a few years ago for penning The Wrestler, The Founder doesn’t traffic in hagiographic nonsense as it looks at Ray Kroc, the man famous for making McDonald’s as representative of America as the Statue of Liberty or the U.S. Constitution.

Instead, it reveals him to be a thoroughly unpleasant individual, with initial viewer

enthusiasm over his unflagging energy and eye for opportunities eventually swamped by utter disdain for his willingness to stab good people in the back.

Ray Kroc has always been championed as the founder of McDonald’s, but those of us who knew little (and cared even less) about fast-food history will perhaps be stunned to learn that he had nothing to do with its conception and initial success.

The first restaurant was created by siblings Dick and Mac McDonald (terrific turns by Nick Offerman and John Carroll Lynch), and they were the ones who came up with the streamlined service, the golden arches, the disposable packaging and (obviously) the name.

Kroc’s contribution? Franchising. He’s the one who tirelessly worked to blanket the country with McDonald’s eateries, but to do so, he had to repeatedly go against the brothers’ wishes, including replacing quality milkshakes with powdered products (since the use of real milk and cream was eating too much into the profits).

Kroc’s antics land Mac in the hospital, but he isn’t done yet, as he works with a financial wizard (B.J. Novak) with the purpose of breaking his original contract with the brothers, receiving all the profits himself, and working it so the McDonalds can no longer use their own name on their original restaurant.

On the homefront, his life is equally blessed, as he ditches the plain-Jane wife (Laura Dern) who supported him over the years for a glamorous woman (Linda Cardellini) he swipes from a trusting business partner (Patrick Wilson).

Clearly, for those with any semblance

of a soul, The Founder isn’t the feel-good movie of this (or any) year, but it’s cleareyed and concise – to say nothing of important and informative. Had it gained any traction, it could have been the Wall Street for a new generation.

XXX: RETURN OF XANDER CAGE

// Hardcore porn for action junkies, xXx: Return of Xander Cage should also get a rise out of more casual viewers burned out on Oscar bait and looking for a mindless time at the movies. It’s as ridiculous and over-the-top as the 2002 original that built on star Vin Diesel’s blip of shortlived superstardom, but it improves ever so slightly on its predecessor thanks to a more interesting roster of supporting characters. (I never saw the second film in the series, 2005’s roundly panned, Dieselless xXx: State of the Union.)

Samuel L. Jackson is back as the federal agent who first introduced extreme-sports enthusiast Xander Cage (Diesel) to the world of international espionage, although this time, it’s another hard-nosed government operative (Toni Collette) who’s giving Cage his marching orders. The plot involves the attempts to retrieve a deadly object known as Pandora’s Box – a device that turns satellites into bombs – but never mind all that. xXx3 is basically an excuse to show cool people doing cool stunts, and on that level, it largely works.

It’s also an excuse to show that the laws of science and logic don’t really matter, particularly in the sequence set inside a damaged airplane (given the absence of

gravity inside the vessel, did the plane somehow end up in outer space?) or the bit in which a couple of characters surf the waves atop ski-equipped motorcycles.

Donnie Yen provides the martial arts mastery, Ruby Rose contributes the smirks, and The Vampire Diaries’ Nina Dobrev donates some nerdy humor. As for Vin Diesel, he’s mainly there to support his own flailing career, which, the Fast & Furious flicks aside, has largely been on life support. Acting like it’s still 2002, Diesel’s Xander Cage allows countless hotties to hang all over his body and partakes in outlandish stunts that would give even James Bond pause.

Speaking of 007, there’s even a scene that apes Casino Royale, with a shirtless Xander Cage sauntering out of the ocean.

But as my wife muttered as she observed his flabby flesh, “Meh. He’s no Daniel Craig, that’s for sure.”

SILENCE

JAN 25-31, 2017

/// Beginning with his first picture, 1967’s Who’s That Knocking at My Door, Martin Scorsese has often employed cinema as a reflection on his own experiences and beliefs regarding religion. Considering he had planned on becoming a priest before opting to become a filmmaker, this makes perfect sense, and additional musings on the matter can be found in projects as diverse as Mean Streets, Kundun, Bringing Out the Dead and, most magnificently, The Last Temptation of Christ.

With Silence, Scorsese again fully turns his attention to the spiritual side, and the result is a movie that’s both disturbing and deeply committed. To be clear, this isn’t a motion picture for those who superficially wear their Christianity like a shiny pinback button, falling for the long con of money-grubbing charlatans like Joel Osteen and believing their devotion to the Lord ends with slapping an ichthys sticker on a car bumper. Instead, Silence is an uncomfortable and unsettling watch, better at generating questions than supplying answers – which, come to think of it, is perhaps the proper outcome for a film of this nature.

Set in the 17th century, Silence follows two Portuguese priests, Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield) and Garupe (Adam Driver) as they head to Japan to search for their mentor, Father Ferreira (Liam Neeson). Having had some initial success with converting the locals to Christianity, the Church is rattled by the fact that Japanese authorities are now forcing all of the Jesuit priests and their followers to denounce their faith or face torture and execution.

The word is that Ferreira has apostatized, a rumor that Rodrigues and Garupe refuse to believe. Seeking to discover what really has happened to Ferreira, the two holy 40 men are encouraged by the pockets of

Japanese peasants who continue to serve God in silence yet aghast at the widespread atrocities being committed by the Buddhists intent on turning back the Western influence.

Adapting Shusako Endo’s 1966 novel, Scorsese and scripter Jay Cocks (the former film critic who also co-wrote the director’s Gangs of New York and The Age of Innocence) have crafted a film packed to the breaking point with thorny issues. Of course, there’s the basic debate over the whole matter of proselytizing in foreign territories, but the picture also looks more specifically at whether innocent laypeople are actually dying to appease God or to appease the priests. Scorsese and Cocks prefer to keep the queries percolating, only succumbing to obviousness – and, thanks to an ill-advised Heavenly voiceover, unfairness – during the final stretch of this 160-minute undertaking.

Garfield, all wrong as the amazing Spider-Hipster in his pair of so-so superhero ventures, follows up his strong work in Hacksaw Ridge with an equally intense performance in this picture. Those expecting a co-starring role for Driver, however, will be disappointed with his comparatively brief screen time. Among the Japanese actors, Issei Ogata is particularly memorable as Inoue, the cunning and cruel Inquisitor who engages in frequent debates with Father Rodrigues about the impracticality of bringing Christianity to his homeland. Indeed, these conversations are among the highlights of a flawed but fascinating endeavor likely to leave viewers as divided as those Red Sea waters of yore.

LIVE BY NIGHT

// “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.” That classic line is uttered by Al Pacino as Michael Corleone in 1990’s The Godfather: Part III, but truthfully, it can easily be muttered by any audience member who happens to catch Live by Night, Ben Affleck’s warmed-over plate of gangland goulash.

Live by Night marks Affleck’s first project in the director’s chair since his 2012 Best Picture Oscar winner Argo, and he also tackles the roles of writer, producer and star. The movie is based on the novel by Dennis Lehane, and that largely explains its appeal to Affleck, whose first (and, by my reckoning, best) film as director was 2007’s excellent adaptation of Lehane’s Gone Baby Gone. But Affleck’s literary loyalty comes at a price, since Live

by Night emerges as the weakest of his four directorial at-bats to date.

Technically, the picture can’t be faulted: It’s a gorgeous production, meticulously put together by a team of seasoned Hollywood vets. This assemblage includes cinematographer Robert Richardson, who

frames the saga in expansive and immaculate ways that seek to enhance the mythmaking (Richardson won a trio of Oscars for similar approaches on Hugo, The Aviator and JFK). Only in this case, the text can’t keep pace with the illustrations.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with the story, which centers on Joe Coughlin (Affleck), a Boston mobster who’s sent to Tampa to oversee operations and finds himself tangling with rival gangsters as well as the local Ku Klux Klan. But there’s also little that’s fresh, with Affleck dutifully following a dog-eared playbook that’s been in rotation since the days when James Cagney would periodically gun down Humphrey Bogart.

Select vignettes add some flavor — a sit-down with a Klan flunky leads to an extremely satisfying denouement — but nothing can overcome the implausibility of its leading character, a guy who seems entirely too sweet to be involved in such a nasty business. Affleck brings his usual stoicism (the less charitable would say rigidity) to the role, but that only adds to the dilemma. It’s hard to accept this brooding anti-hero as one of the GoodFellas when there’s an unshakable feeling that he’s apt to whip out his Batman threads at any given moment.

HIDDEN FIGURES

/// While the white men at NASA were busy figuring out the challenges of managing outer space, the black women assisting them also had to worry about the challenges of managing office space. That’s the crux of Hidden Figures, a breezy and inspiring film about three intelligent ladies having to contend with both sexism and racism as they became personally involved in the Space Race that found the U.S. competing with the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Based on Margot Lee Shetterly’s nonfiction book, Hidden Figures places Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson) at the forefront, relating how she was tapped for her skills as a mathematician to help NASA’s Space Task Group (headed by Kevin Costner’s tough but fair director) crunch the numbers needed to successfully send astronaut John Glenn (winningly played by Glen Powell) into space and have him safely return to Earth. As Katherine copes with prejudice on various fronts, her best friends and colleagues Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae) are having equal difficulty in finding ways to advance in a society that frowns disapprovingly upon their skin color.

Clearly, these women are going to overcome all manner of adversity and emerge triumphant, so – as is often the case – the pleasure is not in the destination but in the journey.

A MONSTER CALLS

// Superior to The BFG but inferior to Pete’s Dragon, A Monster Calls is the latest release to detail the relationship between a young child and a fantastical creature.

Unfortunately, it often skews closer to the calculated artifice of the Spielberg dud rather than the emotional honesty of the Disney remake, spinning a tale about a lonely British lad named Conor (Lewis MacDougall) whose mother (Felicity Jones) is dying of cancer.

Coping with bullies at school and a crotchety grandmother (Sigourney Weaver) at home, Conor eventually receives a nocturnal visit from the talking tree that lives up on the hill. No, it’s not Treebeard from the Tolkien franchise but rather an ancient yew that sounds just like Liam Neeson when he delivers that great “particular set of skills” speech from Taken. The tree informs Conor that he will tell him three stories in exchange for Conor speaking his “truth” – a “truth” that becomes painfully obvious long before the fade-out.

Individual scenes crackle with flavor, but nearly as many segments turn out heavy-handed, with director J.A. Bayona (yet to top his debut feature, the Spanish horror yarn The Orphanage) more interested in carefully arranged sets and thundering effects than in anything more empathic. It’s hard to become completely invested in a movie about holding onto life when its creators are so focused on artdirecting it to death.

FENCES

/// Stage-to-screen adaptations often fail to expand in ways that take advantage of cinema’s limitless potential, meaning viewers are often left with what’s little more than a filmed play.

For the most part, Fences, based on August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, falls into that camp, with director Denzel Washington doing very little to fill the parameters of the big screen. Yet sometimes the material is simply too strong to be crippled by a lack of celluloid dazzle.

Reprising their roles from the 2010 Broadway revival, Washington and Viola Davis are nothing short of remarkable as Troy and Rose Maxson, living in 1950s Pittsburgh and dealing with issues involving family, infidelity and dashed dreams.

Washington remains so faithful to Wilson (who passed away in 2005, at the age of 60) and his text that he even credits the screenplay solely to the playwright.

Between the power of the prose and the potency of the performances, Fences easily earns its screen cred. CS
