Musings about Muse

ONE OF the worst-kept secrets in town the past few weeks is the fact that Muse Arts Warehouse will cease operations early next year, its lease up and not to be renewed.

The story of Muse is essentially a long love letter to the performing arts in Savannah.

Arguably there’s never been a more meaningful one-stop shop in which for lovers of local arts and culture to perform, to amaze, and to simply play, as inside the renovated Seacoast Freight Station just across MLK Boulevard on Louisville Road.

On opening night, with the fair but tough Savannah Morning News critic Gene Downs in the audience to review the show, a car alarm on Broughton Street went off right after the performance began.

The alarm kept going. And going. And going, through the first act and stopping only at intermission.

(Downs gave us a great review, saying the car alarm wasn’t that big a deal since the play was set in urban Philly anyway.)

JinHi’s extraordinary sensitivity not only to the arts but to artists was clearly apparent then, and just as clearly informed her tireless devotion to community in establishing Muse along with Mark.

“There are at least 10 different organizations with whom we have collaborated on a regular basis, and I am particularly proud that we are at a time and place in Savannah where those organizations and others like them are able to find a number of venues in town to either utilize part time, or to claim as their permanent home, and over the years a few have,” JinHi wrote.

“Many many thanks to the hundreds of artists that have enriched this community over the years and the thousands of patrons that keep inspiring us.”

And now begins an exodus of sorts, as ensembles which have come to rely on Muse must seek different venues.

But the story of Muse, or its denouement, anyway, is also the story of a rapidly gentrifying and Disney-fying downtown Savannah.

Muse, you see, is to be replaced with residential development. It will no doubt fetch top dollar.

Unsentimentally, we have to conclude that Savannah was extraordinarily lucky to have Muse Arts Warehouse at all, even for its too-short but massively appreciated seven years in operation.

But allow me to be sentimental for a moment.

I’ve known JinHi since before we starred together in her local stage debut, in a play you’ve probably never heard of called The Woolgatherer.

This was in the final location of City Lights Theatre, on Broughton Street in what’s now Savannah Taphouse, probably longer ago than either of us would care to admit (cough, 1994, cough).

While I had the honor of acting in only a single show at Muse, a production of Medea in 2013, other local performers have literally come of age onstage there.

All of them I’m sure share the same feeling of being nourished by the venue’s open attitude and dedication to serving all of Savannah’s arts community, not just a select few.

In the final analysis, it’s probably this sense of egalitarian accessibility, this rejection of elitism and snobbery, that will be Muse’s most enduring legacy.

They never met an actor or performer they didn’t appreciate. Any artist with a sincere passion for their art was met with equally sincere passion and support.

I have nothing but deep appreciation for what JinHi and Mark have done, not only as a fellow actor and theatre lover, but as a journalist at a newspaper whose average issue each week is about 90 percent devoted to covering local arts and culture.

You see: Muse has hosted so many amazing shows for us to write about!

In her pre-farewell message on Facebook — revealing news already pretty wellknown in local arts circles — JinHi made it clear that the closing of Muse was by no means the end of their mission, just the end of one chapter.

The larger, not entirely artistic lesson is how increasingly difficult, if not impossible, it is for grassroots arts and culture to get a foothold in the Historic District as rents and prices there have skyrocketed.

A massive new Arena is planned for West Savannah, not far from where Muse is now.

(Fun Trivia Fact: Louisville Road isn’t named for the city in Kentucky, but for Georgia’s second capital after Savannah, located just south of Augusta.)

Ironically, Muses’s success may have at least partially inspired the City’s plans to reinvest in that part of town as an extension of the tourist district, therefore helping to price Muse itself out of downtown as the siren song of high rents and prices beckons.

Though its stay was far too brief, no one in their right mind regrets the presence of Muse Arts Warehouse where it has been for the past seven years.

Its closing is another cautionary tale of the often-unavoidable conflict and tension between culture and commerce.

Let’s hope that the amazing legacy of collective culture and community-building that is Muse’s mission will endure. cs

I have a dear friend, a real productive person, who swears on self-care as the secret to her success.

She might appear to be working and volunteering and organizing 24/7, but I happen to know that she spends several hours a week relaxing in her lovely backyard, talking to her chickens.

Clucking with one’s beloveds is a fine way to mitigate the constant barrage of tasks to complete and things to be outraged about, as are getting enough sleep, eating nourishing meals and making sure we move ourselves around by our own momentum at least once a day.

The current state of things has got us rattled if we’re any kind of awake, and most of us are trapped in a frantic loop of refreshing our devices all day long and leaving comments and checking back to see who commented on our comments and hey look a Cyber Monday sale on headlamp beanies! Even when we command

ourselves to relax, only to startle back to attention at every text chime, clutching our phones like Nosferatu with a handful of some waif’s hair.

The more we engage, the more quality downtime we need. If we don’t check out and take care of ourselves, we become sad, diminished shells or drop dead of a heart attack or simply go apeshit on the poor cashier at the coffeeshop who didn’t mean to put regular milk instead of soy in our chai latte but good god young man quit fiddling with that eyebrow ring and pay attention before you get your face caught on the espresso machine!

Sometimes self-care means doing a little extra for ourselves, like buying the fancy soap or scheduling a pedicure. Sometimes it takes something more radical. In a world where the world literally follows us to bed, sitting alone in the dark might be the ultimate indulgence.

That’s the idea—and the science— behind Remedy Float, Savannah’s first sensory deprivation chambers.

rooms each include a private shower and a 8’x4’ cabin that holds 300 gallons of bodytemperature water combined with1800 pounds of Epsom salt, a womb-like environment that is blessedly devoid of sights, sounds and other people’s opinions.

“We like to think of it as recharging by unplugging,” explained Lizzy, as she led me through a bricked courtyard with swings and an herb garden.

Saltwater float tanks have been around since the 50s, when physician and consciousness pioneer Dr. John C. Lilly built one for the U.S. government to find a shortcut into the deep meditation known as the theta state. The tanks were dismissed as a hippie fad in the 70s, only to surface again in the 90s as researchers lauded them as an effective therapy for a variety of stress-related conditions, including chronic pain, sleep disorders, fibromyalgia, anxiety and PTSD. Neuroscientist Justin Feinstein of the Laureate Institute for Brain Research in Tulsa, OK recently confirmed that floating lowers stress hormones and releases endorphins and is currently conducting a study on multiple sessions as a replacement for the anti-anxiety drug lorazepam. (We’ll see how long Big Pharma tolerates that.)

Tyler first discovered floating in Phoenix after spending several years in the Merchant Marines, though he’s no stranger to wet remedies. A native of Sharon Springs, NY, he grew up the historic spa village where city folk have flocked to soak in the mineral-rich waters since the 1700s.

He spent his summers down south at his grandmother’s on Wilmington Island, steeping in the tranquility of the marsh.

met me was at the turbulent intersection of shock and derrrrrp. Lizzy gently showed me into the anteroom, then left me to my own devices (which I promptly turned off.)

I took off my jewelry, showered and climbed into what looked like a walk-in refrigerator. It was tall enough to stand up and stretch, and I knew the salt water was heavy enough to hold me and that I could find the latch anytime.

As soon as I heard the door seal, however, my panic button triggered. Suddenly, the idea of spending the next hour enclosed in a dark room completely naked sounded like a scene from teen slasher movie. But then I told myself it was just like floating off the beach at Tybee, except without the fear of being nipped by a tiger shark or dragged into the shipping channel by a riptide.

I tucked in the provided earplugs, settled my head on a rubber headrest, and bobbed.

After the salt water finished stinging a few scratches I didn’t know I had, I fell into a kind of trance that was something like sleep, only better. My achy shoulders unwound, and I drifted away from worrying vigilance I keep mistaking for reality.

By the time I became aware of the flutey music that signaled my 60 minutes were up, I felt like I’d been away from the planet for several days, although not for four years, unfortunately. A pump began to whir as

it funneled out the water to be sanitized three different ways, and I reentered the world with a deep sense that a lot of frayed synapses had been renewed.

Fighting for the right to vape Award-winning documentary tracks how smoking alternative saves lives by jessica leigh lebos

Surely you’ve heard it before: Smoking kills.

This year, one in five Americans will die from smoking-related cancer, respiratory illness or other disease, and cigarettes will kill over a billion people worldwide in the next decade.

Nicotine gum, prescription pills and sheer will power have helped many folks set down the death sticks, but quitting for good is notoriously hard. In the last few years, the use of e-cigarettes—also known as “vaping”—has been on the rise as a way for nicotine fiends to reduce the risks of conventional smokes and dial back the addiction altogether. Vapor technology employs steam and flavored “juices” to deliver a kick instead of tobacco and fire, and the method has been met with much success—and controversy.

As vape shops have thrived around the country, lawmakers and lobbyists have kept pace with legislation to limit manufacturing and usage. Proponents say

there’s nothing wrong with regulation, but many believe there is active sabotage of the industry and suppression of information by public and private interests.

Such collusion, in addition to the forces that continue to support Big Tobacco internationally, is the focus of the documentary A Billion Lives, screening this Monday, Dec. 5 at Carmike 10 theaters on Stephenson.

“Our film explains not only the extreme dangers smoking inflicts on millions every year, but also how governments and the large corporations who benefit them hold real solutions like vapor technology hostage to keep tax revenue and profits rolling in,” says director Aaron Biebart in a Q&A posted on the film’s website.

Biebart isn’t a smoker himself, but when a friend died from lung cancer, he began researching smoking addiction and successful ways of treating it. He initially thought vaping was “some hipster way to keep smoking indoors,” but after the UK’s Royal College of Physicians confirmed that vaping is 95 percent less harmful than cigarettes, he turned his lens towards why certain governments seem so dead set against it.

“Big Pharma, Big Tobacco, anti-smoking organizations, and various governments have billions of dollars coming in from smoking cessation drugs, cancer drugs, treatments, grants, and taxes,” he explains.

“If smoking disappeared tomorrow, there would be nearly a trillion dollars of lost revenue. Giant companies would fail.

Massive charity organizations would lose their donations. Government programs would shut down…Organizations like the American Cancer Society take money to endorse certain pharmaceutical products and then come out against vapor technology. It’s a clear conflict of interest.”

A Billion Lives is garnering international attention and having a profound effect worldwide. Biebart, a first-time filmmaker, took home the Best Director and the Supreme Jury Prize awards from the Melbourne Film Festival in July, and the film won Best International Documentary at South Africa’s Jozi Film Festival in September. The film is also influencing public policy: Just a few weeks after the film’s premiere in New Zealand, the government there announced it would reverse its ban on vaping and its accoutrements.

Locally, the vaping community has rallied to bring the film to Savannah. Jason

Filmmaker Aaron Biebart set out to find why governments fight against solutions to one of the planet’s most serious public health hazards.

Luu, who owns Vape Savvy on Whitemarsh Island, partnered with independent e-juice mixologist Bobby Goldner as well as Billy Bales of Pirate’s Cove Vapor Lounge in Bluffton, Farris Tompkins of Rincon’s Foghouse Vapors and Andrew Kraft of Vapor Trails in Pooler to buy out the theater so that people can attend for free.

“Ultimately, it’s our job to convert smokers to vapers and save lives. This is outside of business,” says Luu of working with his competitors.

“My belief is that community is more important than business. I would rather have friends for life than make dollars.”

Luu also counts Southeast Vapes’ Nancy Truong, Dillon Gilbert of The Vape Loft in Richmond Hill and Nelson Hill of Vapers Smoke Shop in Savannah Mall as allies in the fight to keep vaping legal and accessible.

As members of the Georgia Smoke Free Association, Luu and his comrades worked to defeat HB 907 earlier this year, which would have imposed strict regulations on small vaping manufacturers but exempted pre-packaged devices made by larger companies. A similar law passed in Indiana last year has crippled the vaping market in that state, and new rules drafted by the FDA, including a ban on free samples and demonstrating how equipment works, began being enforced this summer. Vaping advocates continue to push for reasonable federal regulation and representation.

“There are nine million vapers in this country,” reminds Luu. “We vape and we vote.”

Luu has received help organizing the free screening from customer and advocate Sheba Love, another member of the Georgia Smoke Free Association who became acquainted with the film and its director online. Love, a former smoker, appreciates not only how Biebart exposes corruption in the film but also dispelling myths about the vaping community.

“It’s put a different light on vapers. It’s not just kids blowing clouds,” says Love of those around the world who have organized to bring awareness to vaping as an inexpensive, safe way to stop smoking cigarettes.

While there is a significant movement asking Netflix to add A Billion Lives to its documentary section, the grassroots showings are the only way to see the film at this time. Love asks that folks register for the free seat in advance but says there will likely be tickets available at the door.

“Our aim is to get not just the vapers but everyone else,” he says. “This is a bigger story about how the government will do whatever it takes to keep pockets lined.

And that’s the global reality of it.”

The film’s director echoes the same pitch as he describes his motivation for making the film.

“This is bigger than just a billion people dying,” continues Biebart.

“This is about all of us caring about our neighbor, demanding honest information, and keeping our government in check.” cs

IT’S SAFE to say that Danelle Lejeune’s passions all came together on Georgia’s coast because of bacon.

A poet, photographer, farmer, teacher, historic preservationist and mother, she has many passions to weave together. So this is a porcine puzzle.

Lejeune came to my attention through social media. She connected with me on Facebook. And I started noticing her work, specifically her photography.

“Photographs often have to have a whole narrative and an explanation with the artist explaining it to you,” she says of her camera style. “And that story is nice. But I also want my artwork to hold on its own and be timeless and not be attached to that story.”

Lejeune’s images, shared on Facebook 14 and Instagram and published in various

journals, are beautiful, haunting, intimate, momentary, often lonely and always wellcomposed. When I found out that she’s also a poet, well, sit me down on the front porch of her life!

The way she tells it, her career with pork began in rural Iowa, when her daughter was 18 months old and she started thinking about “going organic” for her new family’s health. She raised two pigs, then four, then 16, then 60, which turned into a genuine business.

“We made bacon out of the cheeks of the pig,” she says of the operation, which allowed her to secure about 85% of her food from local sources about an hour south of Des Moines. “We would advertise that we eat everything from the smile to the tail of the pig.”

She started taking photographs for Iowa’s Historic Preservation Office, traveling isolated roads to document old buildings when her first career interest was architectural history.

Her organically-eating kids became a “mommy blog,” the seeds of her writing

career.

And then, somewhere in the dust, she heard about Georgia’s Ossabaw Island.

Why? Pigs, of course.

Ossabaw Island pigs are a unique and delicious legacy of 16th Century Spanish explorers. She hatched a plan to visit Ossabaw Island, applying to a writer’s retreat.

“We came up with this idea that I would go and I would write a cookbook,” she says, supposing “mommy blog” wouldn’t get her in.

“But they didn’t have cookbook category. So I submitted a poetry portfolio from my undergrad year. And then I got accepted.”

The poetry was a fluke, a ruse, you might say. But then something interesting happened there between pig walks overlooking the Ogeechee.

Folks at the writer’s retreat liked her poems and extracted from her a promise that she would submit them to journals.

And she was published! And published again! She started submitting photographs and they were published, too.

Generally speaking, both strains of her creativity, wordy and visual, draw on her life’s interests: farming, history, architecture and, of course, her kids.

She got the kids, two girls and a boy, in a divorce that separated her from Iowa.

There wasn’t any doubt about where she’d move.

“There’s an artist community here that has welcomed me and encouraged me to thrive and push me to publish, invited me to literary readings, gathered on my front porch,” she says of our area. “A sense of belonging, like I should’ve been living here my whole life.”

She’s now teaching at Armstrong, restoring a beautiful 1876 home in Liberty County and awaiting the publication of her first book, “Etymology of Whale-Fish and Grace,” due out next year.

And yes, she’s planning to farm again, bees and pears, in the backyard.

Straight Dope Classic, Post-Castro Edition What if the Cuban missile crisis had gone badly? —Karl Young I’M CONFIDENT human society would have survived, which I assume is your main concern. Even if things had gone off the rails, and the odd nuke popped off here and there, I think cooler heads would soon have prevailed.

But that’s easy to say now. For a week in October 1962 the whole planet was wondering if Cold War antagonism was about to boil over into nuclear armageddon.

Everyone knows the story: U.S. spyplane photos reveal Russian nuclearmissile bases under construction in Cuba; Kennedy orders a blockade of the island and demands the missiles’ removal; six tense days later, Khrushchev complies.

What’s better understood now is how little Khrushchev had thought through the ways it might all play out. He needed more negotiating leverage than the USSR’s iffy intercontinental missiles could buy him, and he hoped he could rattle the Americans by placing medium-range missiles at their doorstep.

The Americans were rattled all right.

Despite the insistence of Defense Secretary Robert McNamara that the new deployment didn’t change the balance of power, the Joint Chiefs of Staff initially supported some sort of invasion of Cuba in response; it was only after a full week of deliberation that Kennedy was able to sell the blockade idea instead.

Why didn’t it go worse? Most obviously, neither side was crazy enough to want to precipitate the end of the world; it was pretty obviously acknowledged by both that detonating a nuclear bomb would be a bummer for all involved.

This was particularly plain to the Soviets in 1962, when the U.S. warhead stockpile was nine times the size of theirs.

(They’d catch up over the next 15 years, and by 1978 were out in front.)

It was openly known by both governments that even if Russia were to launch all its missiles in Cuba, it couldn’t take out the U.S.’s capability to obliterate the USSR in response. So while theoretically we might have suffered massive loss of life, the chances of the Soviets purposely ordering the all-out attack needed to accomplish it were low.

Beyond that, historically speaking there simply haven’t been many preemptive wars—i.e., ones where, amid high international tension, one country strikes first for fear of becoming a target itself. By this standard, arguably the only cases since 1861 that qualify would be World War I, the Korean War, and the Arab-Israeli war of 1967. Empirically it seems difficult for governments to pull the trigger (so to speak), even when they’re under serious threat.

Nonetheless, it was a scary time, with many opportunities for the shit to hit the fan. During the last days of the standoff, sixty-plus B-52 bombers were in the air carrying nuclear payloads at any given time; one technical or communications glitch could have meant catastrophe.

A Russian submarine lost communication with the surface, assumed war had broken out, and almost launched its own nuclear torpedo. According to an Air Force vet who’s only recently come forward, at one point launch orders were sent by mistake to U.S. missile bases at Okinawa. The crews didn’t comply only because a commanding officer noticed enough irregularities in protocol to investigate further.

So let’s say the worst happened: an overconfident officer made the wrong call, or Kennedy listened to his military advisors.

If the U.S. had invaded, we might have walked into another embarrassing Bay of Pigs-type fiasco—the Soviets had four

times as many troops on the ground as the CIA thought at the time—but most likely no mushroom clouds.

If either side did go nuclear, though, accidentally or not, then we’ve got a whole different picture. The emergency document called the Single Integrated Operational Plan provided the U.S. military command with a prioritized list of thousands of targets in the Soviet bloc and China. The first tier of targets included missile launch sites, airfields for bombers, and submarine tenders; Cuba had all of these, making it an obvious place for an early attack.

Again, if the Soviets had struck first it’s likely the U.S. would have been able to retaliate, but that’s little consolation.

U.S. antiballistic missiles developed under the (pre-sportswear) Nike program had proved largely useless in testing. Despite optimistic government-produced PSAs instructing citizens on how to wash radioactive particles off their potatoes, our country’s population would have been immediately reduced by 20 percent if a third of Soviet nukes had hit their targets.

If all of them had hit home, half the population would’ve been wiped out, not including after-the-fact deaths from fallout, starvation, etc. Of course, our retaliatory capability meant things would have been still grimmer on the Soviet end.

That said, it’s unlikely either side would have launched its full arsenal. A few tactical bombs might have gone off; there might have been a ground war in Berlin; possibly there’d be several million fewer people around now. But rationality won the day: it was in neither state’s interest to escalate.

This, unfortunately, may not hold true for today’s conflicts—but that’s another topic for another column. cs

Man charged with felony DUI in death of Don Logana

The driver involved in the head-on collision that took the life of Don Logana this past weekend has been charged with felony DUI, according to reports.

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police arrested Cleaveland Antwan Coleman, 31, of Savannah, Tuesday night after his release from Memorial University Medical Center for injuries suffered in the crash.

Logana reportedly was in the back seat of a 2009 Mitsubishi Galant driven

by Erich Richter of Register, GA. Carlina Richter, also of Register, was in the front passenger seat and Joshua Bridges, of Savannah, was also in the back seat.

South Carolina Highway Patrol officials say Coleman is facing one count of felony driving under the influence involving death, and two counts of felony driving

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department’s Violent Crimes detectives launched an investigation into the death of a woman found at her residence on the 600 block of West 42nd Street on Thursday, November 24.

At about 7 p.m., Metro responded to the scene finding Denise Michelle Williams, 53, deceased inside.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab will determine the exact cause and manner of death.

Abercorn bank robbers sought

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department’s Robbery Unit is seeking information about a Nov. 26 bank robbery on the 14000 block of Abercorn Street.

“Metro responded to the scene just before 9:30 a.m. Reportedly, two masked suspects entered the bank demanding cash from employees, while holding them at gun point,” police report.

“The victims complied. The suspects fled in a waiting vehicle. No injuries were reported.”

Man sought in attempted murder case

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department’s Violent Crimes detectives have obtained warrants for the arrest of a man wanted for multiple charges related to a physical altercation on the 1200 block of East Bolton Street on Wednesday, Nov. 23.

Antwon Furlow, 30, is wanted for aggravated battery, aggravated assault and criminal attempted murder. He reportedly injured a man during a fight, resulting in

Australian aviator David Mayman has promised investors that his personal jet packs will hit the market by mid-2017, though early adopters will pay about $250,000 for one, to fly a person at up to 60 mph for 10 minutes. The JB-10 (developed

by Mayman and designer Nelson Tyler) has made about 400 test runs in Monaco and over downtown London and New York City, but the partners realize that ultimate success will require that the fuel tanks be downsized so that the craft can be powered electrically—and thus seek crowdfunding both for that model and a larger one to accommodate the Pentagon’s (Special Operations Command) tactical needs.

The Continuing Crisis

• Wild Life: The state agency Colorado Parks and Wildlife filed 21 criminal charges in October against the Squirrel Creek Wildlife Rescue center in Littleton, alleging that some of the orphaned and rehabbing animals Kendall Seifert houses are not being kept according to the state’s strict standards—and that Seifert’s 15-year-old center is also home to his popular swingers’ club (Scarlet Ranch) featuring weekend sex parties. One of the criminal charges suggests that rescue animals could be stressed by gazing at activity in the ranch’s bar area. Seifert said he will challenge the charges out of fear that many of the raccoons, foxes, song birds, coyotes, skunks, rabbits and squirrels he would have to relinquish would not find suitable facilities elsewhere.

• In St. Paul, Minnesota, a 25-year-old woman told police on Nov. 3 that she was involuntarily roughed up several hours after being voluntarily roughed up at Arnellia’s Bar’s weekly “Smack Fest”— in which female patrons competitively slap each other’s faces for three “rounds” under strict house rules. The woman said she spoke amicably with her opponent, but by closing time, the opponent and several friends, including men, punched and kicked her outside the bar. (In other slapping news, a 71-year-old woman died in Lewes, England, in November while participating in a Chinese healing seminar that emphasizes being slapped repeatedly to rid the body of poisoned blood

and toxins. The “healer,” Hongshi Xiao, charges clients around $900 to beat what he calls the “sha” out of them.)

• Episode Almost Ended in a Tie: In November, in a remote area of Oregon’s Maury Mountains, a 69-year-old man killed an elk and dragged the carcass behind his off-road vehicle up a hill.

According to the Crook County Sheriff’s office, the vehicle suddenly flipped over backward, and the man landed on, and was impaled by, the elk’s antlers. Fellow hunters summoned a helicopter, and the man has apparently survived.

Brittany Maynard, then 29, became “the face of the Right to Die movement” in 2014, according to a New York Post column, when she chose a legal physician-assisted suicide rather than awaiting the growth of her terminal brain tumor. In October, terminally ill California mother Stephanie Packer hoped to be “the face of the Right to Live movement” after revealing that her insurance company denied coverage for a drug that could extend her life—but at the same time disclosed that her suicide drugs are covered, and even disclosed her co-pay ($1.20).

Margaret Boemer’s baby LynLee was “born” twice. In an October Texas Children’s Hospital interview, doctors described how the need to rid Boemer’s fetus of a rapidly growing tumor required them, at Boemer’s 23rd week of pregnancy, to remove the fetus completely from the uterus until it was “hanging out in the air” so that they could cut away the tumor and then reposition the fetus into the uterus.

LynLee was “born” again by C-section 13 weeks later.

Suspicions Confirmed

(1) In a retail market long dominated by priests, “nonsectarian” funeral eulogizers now offer to give individually tailored remembrances of the deceased for a fee, according to an October report by a New York Post reporter who interviewed two local “celebrants,” who cited the declining appeal of “prayers.” (2) The British retailer ASOS announced in August that 3-foot-long clip-on dinosaur tails had sold out in one of its two models (although New York magazine, which reported it in the U.S., was, for obvious reasons, baffled about why).

A high-level policy document released by the Chinese government in September detailed plans to use technology to monitor citizen behavior to such a degree that each person would receive a “social credit” score (similar to a FICO score in the U.S. but covering a range of conduct beyond financial) that would be the basis for allotting perks such as government support in starting businesses and whether parents’ children are eligible for the best schools. “(K)eeping trust is glorious,” according to the document, and “good” behavior promotes a “harmonious socialist society.”

(1) Motorist Kurt Jenkins, 56, was arrested in November in Boynton Beach, Florida, after a pedestrian said Jenkins, naked, motioned him to his car to take a look. The pedestrian said there were children in the area—and also that Jenkins

appeared to have wires running from his genitals to an unidentified “electrical device.” (2) Among a stash of pornography found recently on the computer of Michael Ward, 70, were photos of humans having some sort of sex with “horses, dogs, (an) octopus and (an) eel,” according to a report of England’s Chelmsford Crown Court proceedings. A pre-sentencing order forbade Ward to have contact with children under 16 (but was silent about possible contact with fish or mollusks).

(1) At press time, “Bugs Bunny” and “Pink Panther” were on trial in St. Catharines, Ontario, on aggravated-assault charges from a Halloween 2015 bar fight in which “Dracula’s” ear was severely slashed with a broken bottle. “There was a lot of blood,” said a witness (but coming from Dracula, not being sucked out by Dracula).

(Update: The judge cleared Bugs, but was still deliberating on Panther.) (2) The tardigrade is an ugly micro-organism that is perhaps the sturdiest animal on Earth, able to endure otherwise-impossible living conditions and (thanks to gene- sequencing) known to be composed of DNA not seen elsewhere. A Japanese company recently began selling an oversized, cuddlable tardigrade toy “plushie” authenticated by science’s leading tardigrade authority, professor Kazuharu Arakawa of Keio University.

The usual 20,000 or so visitors every year to Belgium’s 30-acre Verbeke Foundation art park are allowed to reserve a night inside the feature attraction: a 20-foot-long, 6-foot-high polyester replica of a human colon created by Dutch designer Joep Van Lieshout. The area at the end of the structure gives the installation its formal name, the Hotel CasAnus.

The facility, though “cramped,” according to one prominent review, features heating, showers and double beds, and rents for the equivalent of about $150 a night (the rate in 2012).

music interview As the son of Gregg Allman, Devon Allman has Southern Rock coursing in his blood. Despite the gift of a musical lineage, the 44-year-old guitarist, vocalist, and keyboardist has created his own kingdom of blues-fueled rock ‘n’ roll.

It’s been a wild 20 years for Allman. In addition to a colorful solo career, the musician led acclaimed blues rock band Honeytribe and rounded out the stellar and soulful Royal Southern Brotherhood, a supergroup featuring the likes of Cyril Neville, Bart Walker, Yonirco Scott (Derek Trucks Band), and Charlie Wooton.

Allman’s played rock, jam, and all manner of styles, but the electrifying performer always finds his way back to his blues roots. He and his band hit the Tybee Post Theater to share tunes from Allman’s latest solo effort, Ride or Die. Featuring Ron Holloway on saxophone, Bobby Yang on strings, Kevin McKendree, Tyler Stokes on guitars, Steve Duerst on bass, and co-producer Tom Hambridge on drums, Allman has recorded a true blues rock LP with a modern pulse and moments that can be both tender and tough, fiery and coolly smooth.

Always one to throw a surprise or two in there, Allman’s cover of The Cure’s “A Night Like This” closes out the release with bright synths and a swampy groove.

We talked with Allman about finding the right players for a record, maintaining a loose songwriting schedule, and his late transformation into a killer lead guitar player.

You’ll be in town with a new album.

What was it like writing the songs on Ride or Die?

What inspired you lyrically and thematically?

Always with me, lyrically I’m inspired by what I see, what I experience. It’s life, it’s love, it’s pain. We all go through our daily thing and somehow it finds its way into the way I play.

the studio; I choose to have a different live band. In-studio, you’re just trying to nail takes. I’ve been really lucky to work with [drummer/co-producer] Tom Hambridge.

What when you sought out new players for this album?

I wasn’t necessarily looking for a different style…just guys that I knew would really feel it for this genre. When I go make a record, we just kind of corral who we can get. Sometimes, it’s really storied musicians from Chicago or Nashville or Memphis. Some are my friends. So we just kind of put it together.

You’ve tried out various styles and genres through the years. What is it about blues rock that feels inherently natural to you?

I think everything inherently goes back to blues, whether it’s soul, rock, or jam band music. Everything finds its way home to the blues; it’s a very natural genre for me.

Do you feel your guitar style has changed over your career?

I hope so! You really just hope that every year, you get a little bit better at expressing

I started playing lead late in life, and I’m still pretty petrified when it comes to lead guitar — there are some really amazing players out there. The one thing I think I have going for me is an identity: I have three licks, but you’re going to know it’s me.

What led you to transition from rhythm to lead?

My lead guitar player quit! [Laughs.] I said, ‘Alright, so I can replace him or I can try to get better. I was always a singer and rhythm guitar player, but at that point, I did one or two leads in the show—they were during ballads and were really slow.

So when he left, I had a choice, and I decided to do it. it really became a passion.

How’d you build up your skill set?

Oh my God, I went back into completely woodshed mode, playing eight hours a day, playing to Hendrix, Santana, Robert Randolph, eight hours a day for three months.

I gave myself a six-month window, and at the end of six months, if I did okay, then I’ll keep going. And if I didn’t, I have to be honest with myself and just hire a lead guitar player. Two months in, I had a really amazing night where everything worked, and I’ve been playing lead ever since.

For folks who haven’t seen you and your band live before, what can they expect?

It’s a really high-energy show. We do not let the crowd sleep! It’s a lot of fun, really, it’s a journey through my career. You’re going to hear some Honeytribe, Royal Southern Brotherhood, solo material, cool covers, instrumentals. It’s a lot of fun. CS

John Anderson: A Country Gem

With a comeback album and loyal fans, the neo-honky tonker is still striking gold by anna chandler

Behind every great country legend is a good story. Fans like authenticity with their songwriters, and John Anderson is one of those artists whose 30-year career has churned out odes to the everyday folk, love letters to his country, and tongue-incheek redneck anthems thanks to his firm roots and inherent talent.

Through country’s melding into pop, Anderson is one of those musicians who has managed to hold fast to tradition while creating infectious toe-tappers that never seem outdated or dusty.

The 61-year-old icon boasts both a stellar catalog and a great backstory. Anderson’s musical life began when he left his hometown of Apopka, Florida in his 20s, arrived at his sister’s Nashville home without warning, and began the balance of odd jobs in the day and club gigs at night. (That Anderson worked as a roofer for the Grand Ole Opry years before becoming an honored guest on the famous stage is a story worthy of its own country tune.)

After six years of hustling, Anderson inked a record deal with Warner Bros.

Records, hitting the Top 40 with the gentle ballad “The Girl at the End of the Bar” in 1978. When he released the goofy tune “Chicken Truck,” followed by “I’m Just an Old Chunk of Coal (But I’m Gonna Be a Diamond Someday)” in 1981, Anderson’s place in the traditional country music revival movement was solidified, earning him a Grammy nomination for Best Male Country Vocal Performance.

The ‘80s would prove to be Anderson’s decade with the dynamo hit “Swingin’”.

Penned with Anderson’s longtime writing partner Lionel Delmore, “Swingin’” cracked the country charts and hit Number One by March 1982; it’s now considered a classic. With a rock ‘n’ roll backbone, Anderson’s distinctive backwoods drawl, and a simple concept—falling hard for a beautiful girl on her front porch swing— the honky-tonk ode to young love had everything a good song needed. It was a crossover hit, easing into the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming the biggest selling country record in the history of Warner Bros.

Over the next decade, Anderson recorded now-classics like the smash hit “Seminole Wind,” “Straight Tequila Night,” and “Money in the Bank.”

Recently, he contributed vocals to a cover of “Seminole Wind” on Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road’s album Country Grass, a collection of renditions of timeless country songs featuring the songs’ original vocalists. Coincidentally, Jordan & Carolina Road were just in the Savannah area last weekend, promoting Country Grass with a gig at Randy’s Pickin’ Parlor.

Though he eased off the charts in the late ‘90s following the release of Top Five hits “I Wish I Could Have Been There,” “I’ve Got It Made,” and “Bend Until It Breaks,” Anderson’s devoted fans remain loyal and true. In 2007, he shared Easy Money, a comeback album produced by John Rich of Big & Rich, and in 2009, Anderson co-wrote Rich’s single “Shuttin’ Detroit Down,” a topical song addressing the Michigan auto industry crisis.

In 2015, Anderson shared his first album in eight years: his 23rd studio LP Goldmine. Steeped in Anderson neo-honky tonk tradition, patriotism, and the good ol’ boy day-to-day (from gator huntin’ to hanging out by the river), the record’s proof of Anderson’s unwillingness to bend to trends. Through the years, the songwriter proudly sticks to what he believes in: wellcrafted storytelling and upbeat numbers

laced with steel guitar, catchy country licks, and that signature drawl. Anderson’s so trusted with the mantle of classic country that Merle Haggard even wrote a song for him, “Magic Mama,” which appears on Goldmine. The Hag was writing new tunes while confined to a Macon, Georgia hospital bed—as only he would—and knew the twangy, swingin’ Western track was perfect for Anderson’s voice.

After a career filled with numerous albums cited as “comebacks,” Anderson has enjoyed a different kind of resurgence with Goldmine. You’re more likely to catch him on classic country radio than stations that spin new, country-accented pop hits, and he’s okay with that. Music changes, trends fade in and out. But country fans are lucky to have Anderson to count on—and if his sold-out and recently-added second date at The Mars Theatre are any indicator, the humble hitmaker will be giving the people what they want for quite some time. Something for the Kids Fest

Get heavy for a good cause down at the Dollhouse. Something for the Kids Fest takes a hands-on approach to holiday philanthropy: proceeds from the day-long music festival will directly help less fortunate families in the Savannah area through a post-show holiday gift shopping spree, conducted by the performers themselves.

The little festival’s lineup boasts a diverse blend of alternative, metal, hardcore, and emo from all around the region.

Twin Studies, a duo spinning a dreamy, gauzy kind of shoegaze-ridden pop, comes down from Atlanta for the festivities. With watery reverb, soaring synthesizers, and hazy, ambient vocals, it’s a stark contrast to some of the day’s rowdier fare.

Yashira played Dollhouse in May alongside Code Orange, Down In It, and Without. The Jacksonville four-piece wields bristling, ferocious postmetal like a battle ax and just released a fresh single, “Surmise,” on November 10.

Charleston’s False Light churns out unbridled powerviolence-influenced hardcore with grindcore intensity. The band recently wrapped a tour with Italian hardcore outfit Discomfort after the two bands released a split LP together.

There are plenty of familiar faces on the bill, including Savannah/Beaufort’s own Big Awesome, Kings of Summer (featuring ex-members of Word Travels Fast), Savannah metal band Vatican, South Carolina’s Riot Stares, Second Death, Between Symmetries, and Ana Mei, playing their very first show.

Philadelphia-based band Tinmouth comes to town to play amid the golden-bathed glitz of El-Rocko Lounge. The trio writes jangly, tough-around-the-edges tunes rooted in solid pop hooks and washed in lo-fi fizz.

Tinmouth possesses a great knack for aggressive-yet-melodic attack in the manner of trailblazers like Mission of Burma with a loose, college-rock sensibility and approach. The First Eliza Doolittle Collective Face performs Shaw classic that inspired My Fair Lady

IF YOU love My Fair Lady, you’ll love Pygmalion. Just don’t expect any singing.

My Fair Lady, of course, was written in the 1950s by the all-star musical theatre duo of Lerner and Loewe. It is based on George Bernard Shaw’s 1913 play Pygmalion, itself inspired by the ancient Greek myth about a sculptor who falls in love with his own marble creation.

The film version of the musical, starring Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle and Rex Harrison as Henry Higgins, is one of the most widely beloved movies ever made.

While Shaw’s play isn’t a musical, the characters are virtually identical, as is the core transformation of Eliza from a humble but street-smart Cockney girl into what seems to be an upper-crust aristocrat.

Local theatre standout April Hayes plays Miss Doolittle in Collective Face Theatre Ensemble’s production of the Shaw play, opening this weekend.

“When I was a little girl I saw My Fair Lady. I watched it with my grandmother.

I remember when Eliza Doolittle came

down the stairs in that ball gown. I said to myself, I’m going to be her one day,” Hayes recalls.

“Also I love doing accents, I love Shaw, and I love classic theatre, so I couldn’t turn it down!”

Director David I.L. Poole explains the decision to stage Pygmalion.

“Though My Fair Lady has been called the most perfect musical ever made, there’s a reason we chose this and not the musical. It’s a great addition to our season, and sort of our second delving into classical theatre,” Poole says, Death of A Salesman earlier this year being their first.

“Also, it’s hard to do a musical without a cast of 40. We are doing this play with like 12 people. If you like My Fair Lady, it’s wonderful to see the source material. It’s been interesting to see how easy it is to fall in love with this play.”

As you might expect from a writer and social critic of Shaw’s caliber, his play delves more deeply into the thorny issues involved with Eliza’s metamorphosis, and what it

Community theatre rarely has the luxury of something as exotic as a dialect coach. But for Pygmalion, Collective Face utilizes the talents of Jeffrey DeVincent to help Hayes navigate Eliza’s transition from her native Cockey accent to “RP,” or Received Pronunciation, i.e., the stereotypical upper crust English accent you might hear on the BBC. “Jeff DeVincent is fantastic. I did a lot of listening. It’s like learning songs — you have to use your ear. Same thing with Cockney and RP,” says Hayes.

“It’s especially challenging with the Cockney accent. In the play, I am low class and no one can understand me. Yet of course I have to be understood by the audience. That’s the balancing act.”

Hayes is doing another balancing act: she’s the mother of a son who’s a little over a year old.

“I had just given birth, and David called and said, ‘I know you’ve got a lot on your plate right now, but I have the perfect role for you,’” Hayes laughs.

“So I took the summer off to prepare for Eliza. We started rehearsal in October, right after my son’s first birthday! Our children are our greatest motivators. I feel like I’m setting an example though he’s only a year old.”

Rounding out the cast are Eric Salles as Mr. Doolittle, Gary Shelby as Colonel Pickering, Julie Kessler as Mrs. Pearce, and Dandy Barrett as Mrs. Higgins. Additional cast members are Nory Garcia, Casey Bessette, Kevin Santana, Lisa Buse, Corey Hollinger, J Frank Lynch, and Garrett Ward.

For Collective Face, this production is a bittersweet one, as it’s the last show the troupe will perform in Muse Arts Warehouse before the lease is up and the building is renovated into residences.

“For the time being, we’ll be moving our shows into the Kennedy Fine Arts auditorium at Savannah State University,” Poole says, adding that the space will probably allow a wider range of material anyway.

Echoing many other observations about the changing character of Savannah, he says, “The rents downtown have gotten so insane, they’re beyond the reach of just about any arts organization.” cs

says about Britain at the turn of the 20th Century.

“It’s interesting to see how much more independent this Eliza is than in My Fair Lady,” says Poole.

“This is set during the suffrage movement, so it’s about early feminism. It’s also about the morality of the middle class, as seen through Eliza’s father Alfred.”

Also, this: Pygmalion is really funny.

“I don’t think people realize how funny this play really is,” says Hayes. “It’s a social commentary on the British class system, and also a social commentary about women’s independence. It’s political and social satire, and very much a comedy. It’s not dry or didactic at all.”

Poole says another key point about Pygmalion is “it’s more about the Henry Higgins story than Eliza’s.”

Local theatre veteran Mark Rand plays Higgins.

“You really do get to see a little more about him. In comparing the two, I feel he comes across a little better in Pygmalion,” says Rand.

“In My Fair Lady some of the material makes him seem more misogynistic, which I don’t really think he is in Pygmalion,” he says.

“I think Shaw put a lot of himself into character of Higgins. A lot of the social commentary in the play reflected Shaw’s own views at the time,” Rand says.

“He was somewhat socialist, and had the belief that everyone should be treated equally. He was proud of the fact that he treats a duchess the same as he would a flower girl.”

That said, Rand also describes Higgins as being in a form of arrested dveloipment.

“He’s a little bit of a savant. Childlike in some ways. We all know people like that — they’re brilliant in one area but socially inept in others.”

Rand says he’s been in two previous productions of My Fair Lady in years past.

“I auditioned for Higgins twice before, but didn’t get it either time,” he laughs. “I was always a fan of the story.”

While this isn’t a musical, Hayes says, “the beautiful thing about this play is there is real singing in the language. I’m trying to do this portrayal as Eliza almost singing the words.”

Hayes says Poole’s direction has made all the difference.

“David pressed the point that we shouldn’t be afraid to make mistakes in rehearsal. He wanted us to play with this, to bring the play to life. Of course there are several adaptations and you can get lost in the different versions. Our version gives you a lot of freedom,” she says.

William Shakespeare’s gotta be blushing in his grave thanks to Armstrong State University. Throughout their fall semester, the university has paid loving homage to the playwright through a variety of productions, including the hysterical romp The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) and Desdemona: A Play about a Handkerchief.

The tribute wraps this weekend with Armstrong Masquers Theatre’s rendition of Shakespeare’s beloved comedy The Taming of the Shrew.

The classic has been adapted countless times—Cole Porter’s musical version Kiss Me, Kate and the 1967 film of the play (starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton) are favorites, as is 1999 teen flick 10 Things I Hate About You. The hysterical tale revolves around the courtship of Petruchio and Katherina, the “shrew” in question. Headstrong Kate is not into the idea of romance with Petruchio, but through clever banter and plenty of mind games, Petruchio eventually charms her and the two fall deeply in love.

After directing last year’s Julius Caesar, Dr. Peter Mellen was eager to bring some laughs to the Armstrong stage.

“I didn’t want to do another serious one,” he reveals. “It was time for a comedy.

I haven’t done this comedy in 20 years, and I just think it’s a fun show.”

Many modern Shakespeare productions bring The Bard’s work to life in nontraditional settings—in fact, Armstrong’s Caesar was set in post-Soviet Republic Eastern Europe—but Dr. Mellen decided to stick with Taming of the Shrew’s original time period.

“I was talking to John Wright, our scenic designer, and we started talking about where you put Shakespeare, and he told me of an Onion article: “[Unconventional Director Sets Shakespeare Play In Time, Place Shakespeare Intended],” Dr. Mellen chuckles.

“I have no problem playing around with the placement of time if there’s some benefit to it. I’m not sure how Taming of the Shrew gets much benefit of moving out of time and place,” he says.

“We decided, what the heck, let’s be bold and different and stay where Shakespeare wrote it, in the Italian Renaissance. I think it works very well on its own.”

Having directed many Shakespeare productions, Dr. Mellen is used to presenting 30 the work both in and out of period.

“I think the two things I was concerned about was, one, it’s a comedy. Make it funny,” he says. “It doesn’t matter how accurate we are if it’s not funny. That was our big thing.

“The second was, this is a love story, and there really is a love story between [Katherina] and Petruchio. I think sometimes in production that gets lost. Our concern was to make sure we bring out the love story.

Petruchio gets into all this because he’s out for money, and once he sees [Katherina] and starts interacting with her, he realizes this is the woman for him and no other woman will do. And for [Katherina], she discovers Petruchio is the man for her and no other man will do. It takes them both awhile before they can admit this, but they make a pretty darn good team. We wanted to make sure we got the comedy out and developed the story.”

A talented troupe of undergraduate students, led by TJ Vaughn (Petruchio) and Emily Edwards (Katherina), will illuminate the stage. Dr. Mellen is proud of their “fun, interesting little group,” which features students of a variety of disciplines, including a few theatre majors.

reason! That means, ‘I kind of know what’s going on on this page, but I don’t really know what I’m saying.’ Our cast knows exactly what they’re saying, so if you avoided seeing Shakespeare because you think you won’t understand, you’ll get it. If you avoided it because you think it’s long and dull, it’s not! It’s a lot of fun. You will understand what’s going on.”

Hurricane Matthew put a damper on the Masquers’ rehearsal schedule, but the cast worked hard to spring back. Now, they’re ready present The Taming of the Shrew in all its glory and look back on a rich Shakespearean semester.

“Come on down!” encourages Dr. Mellen. “That’s all you need to do with this show: Relax, have a good time, and enjoy this great romantic comedy.” CS actors understood exactly what they were saying at all times. As anyone who had to read it in high school knows, Shakespeare can be tricky, and according to the Shrew director, audiences can tell when an actor doesn’t quite comprehend what their character is trying to articulate.

“If the actors know what they are saying, they can say it in a way that the audience can understand it,” Dr. Mellen explains.

This solidified his desire to enter the culinary world.

“I was hooked,” Grove professes.

Grove began his culinary journey working with James Beard award-winning chef Elizabeth Terry at Elizabeth on 37th. There he developed an understanding of each restaurant role, including bar service and back of the house prep.

Terry proved to be a fruitful mentor, enhancing Grove’s knife work by making him time himself chopping vegetables.

“I hated it at the time, but now I think it was genius,” Grove recalls.

Grove developed his expertise further by cooking in a diverse array of restaurants, first in Atlanta and then Florida. These experiences led him back to Atlanta, where he became corporate chef for three privately owned clubs.

Yet Grove could not stay away from Savannah for too long. In 2008, he spent one year as the executive chef at the Mansion on Forsyth Park, then a little over a year at Vic’s on the River, followed by three years managing clubhouses at The

Landings Club.

In March 2014, Chef Roberto Leoci, consulting chef at Pacci, asked Grove to join the team as “chef de cuisine” (head chef).

While Grove may not be Italian, he aimed to learn the language in college to “woo women” and had first-hand experiences with this country’s cuisine. Grove worked very closely with Italian chef Gino Noci in Atlanta.

He also had a remarkable opportunity to visit Italy, in order to gleam from their techniques and taste the bounty of the land. Additionally, Grove apprenticed with pasta king Michael White in NYC, learning the craft of hand-made pasta.

As a Savannahian, Grove recognizes the importance of “paying your civic rent.” He believes “there is not enough community involvement and communities are falling apart.”

In order to bridge this gap, Grove refused to sit idly by and allow this to happen.

Take the West Broad Street YMCA for example. The most recent vegetables that he and the local children planted were Italian Christmas beans, squash, and cucumbers.

“The kids can pick and eat fresh veggies over there.” Grove graciously invited the kids into Pacci’s kitchen, where they were wide-eyed and enchanted.

“My hope is they will be more apt to try new foods because they had a hand in planting them.”

Grove also seeks to bring the community together through weekly events hosted by Pacci. On Tuesdays, Grove offers specially priced Pinots and Pastas.

Each week three different pasta dishes are featured with a glass of wine for under $20. Imagine dishes like Braised Beef Rigatoni or Roasted Rabbit Ragu with Sundried Tomatoes and Truffle Pecorino.

The highlight of Pacci’s community events is their Wednesday night Supper Clubs. Aside from being the only formal Supper Club in Savannah, what brings a community together more than sitting around a twenty-foot table, breaking bread with 28 of your neighbors?

“Supper Club is a locals gig. You get to meet people in the community.”

Every second Wednesday of the month, Grove stages a grandiose multi-course meal with wine pairings for about $45.

Each month, Chef features a region in Italy, serving its local cuisine and wine.

November’s region is Emilia-Romagna, in Northern Italy, and December is Piedmont, bordering France and Switzerland.

Grove aims to expand the well-attended Supper Club to a weekly basis.

It is apparent that Chef Grove is enthusiastic about and inspired by the fare he creates. “In this industry more than any other, you have to love what you do. It’s very stressful, but you have to put it all into perspective,” he says.

Grove often encourages his young line cooks to step out of the kitchen in order to see people in the dining room experiencing their food. “That’s why we’re doing it.”

Grove spoiled my husband and I with decadently rustic Italian food, each plated with precision and sophistication.

Initially, we were served Beef Carpaccio, one of Pacci’s signature dishes, from which the restaurant’s name is derived.

Thin slices of raw Wagyu beef were drizzled with creamy, yet pungent, garlic aioli, and topped with arugula and shaves of Parmigiano-Reggiano. Shards of salt enhanced the beef’s natural flavor profile, making it exceptionally memorable.

Following this dish, we shared the ingenious Asparagus Carbonara, which was a play on the classic, minus the pasta. Also a signature dish, this bundle boasted creamy and savory ribbons of carrot, asparagus, pancetta, and onions. The poached egg on top oozed rich yolk when cut. The unifying flavor was the sweetness from zabaglione, comprising whipped egg yolks, sugar and Marsala wine.

Chef Grove then served us with three pasta dishes and one fish entree.

The house made Linguini with briny Sapelo clams and green olives in a white wine sauce was vibrantly effervescent.

This is an olive-lover’s dream, as the green olive permeates every tantalizing bite.

Stracci, meaning rags, is a pasta dish in which the scraps of dough from other macaroni are resourcefully mixed with garden peas and thick slices of 18-month old Parma Ham. These were then tossed in a sumptuous black truffle cream sauce.

Then handcrafted “Rooster’s Crest” pasta was served with slices of Savannah River Farms sausage and broccolini, all in a white wine sage sauce. This was truly a comforting bowl of delicately layered familiar flavors.

Lastly, we dined on a thick and juicy grilled Swordfish steak. This mild fish was served with sweet piquillo peppers stuffed with crab and rice. The finishing touches of toothsome candied fennel and ripe yellow tomato coulis were simple but brilliant.

As evident in the food he produces, Grove’s science background allows him “to break flavors down into parts and piece them back together on a plate.” His innovation and passion are unmistakable.

Grove knows that “if a chef is bored, you can see it.” This Chef is clearly anything but bored, as his inspired dishes made us feel as though even the last bite was as new and exciting as the first. cs

Beer + Bluffton = Salt Marsh Brewing

JUST OVER a year ago a Salt Marsh Brewing was added to the long list of exciting South Carolina breweries. Salt Marsh Brewing opened in a loft area just above the Fat Patties dinning room in Bluffton.

It’s a small brewery but they pack a punch. Founded by James Brown, a Hilton Head native and the former head brewer at River Dog Brewing in Ridgeland, Salt Marsh’s mission is “to brew great innovative beers for our neighbors to enjoy.”

Part of Brown’s innovation is to use of an unusual fermentation system on some of their brews. Many of the beers that Salt Marsh produces are sours and brett beers.

Brown uses a process called kettle souring. This process involves inoculating the wort (that’s the beer before it’s been fermented) during the kettle boil, giving it an expected sour pucker, but before the temperature is turned up to kill the bacteria.

This process produces sours faster

than traditional souring processes, which involve inoculating the beer after fermentation, and insures that the bacteria do not infect the entire brewery.

It’s a process that is controversial among sour purists but is an interesting new tool in the brewer’s bag of tricks and it does produce interesting beer.

Part two of brewing innovative beers is to create interesting recipes. There is no shortage of good recipes in the Salt Marsh lineup. Here are a few of Salt Marsh’s beers to look for when you visit.

Wild Hoppin’ John Jay IPA: Hoppin’ John Jay IPA is one of Salt Marsh’s base beers but this “wild” version is fermented with brettanomyces which adds a new spin and a funky kick to what is already a strong example of an IPA. Morning Grind: Stouts brewed with coffee are nothing new but Morning Grind is brewed with green coffee beans. This gives the beer a strong bitterness but rounds out with a rich coffee flavor.

Nannas Puddin’: A sweet hefeweizen with yeast produced banana flavors brewed with vanilla wafers could easily be a novelty beer but Nannas Puddin’ comes across as a well crafted and refreshing beer perfect as a thirst quencher during a meal or on it’s own as a desert beer. Nanna’s Pudding is a Fall seasonal so it may not be around much longer.

Fat Patties is a local, grass fed burger joint with two locations, the oldest of which is located in Beaufort. This original location had a strong craft beer tap list but they decided to take a next step and let their second location morph into a brewpub.

Although under different ownership, Fat Patties and Salt Marsh enjoy a symbiotic relationship. Fat Patties benefits from a Salt Marsh’s tap list and occasional menu collaborations and Salt Marsh has a location to showcase its beers.

Bluffton is not that far away and is well worth the journey to take in a few of Salt Marsh Brewing’s pours. They also offer growlers and crowlers so taking home a few Salt Marsh beers is likely. MOANA

/// Better than Finding Dory but not quite reaching the level of Zootopia, the latest Disney animated effort of 2016 adheres pretty much to the formula we’ve come to expect in recent years from the storied studio. And as usual when it comes to the Mouse House, the formula won.

Again combining a fairly standard morality tale with eye-popping visuals, Disney has another hit in Moana, a rollicking yarn centered on a young lass (voiced by Auli’i Cravalho) coming of age on a South Pacific island.

Enjoying a special rapport with the ocean, she finally defies her overprotective father’s orders and sets sail with the intention of finding the Heart of Te Fiti (not to be confused with Titanic’s Heart of the Ocean), a bauble swiped from an island goddess by the boisterous and selfsatisfied demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson). Requiring the return of the stone to save her endangered island, she eventually crosses paths with Maui, and the pair constantly bicker as they embark on a series of adventures.

One involves tiny pirates who might be distant relatives of the Minions; another focuses on a monstrous crab who belts out a showstopper (it’s a perfect vocal role for Tim Curry, but Flight of the Conchords’ Jemaine Clement got the call).

Full of energetic incident, backed by a score co-written by Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda, and imbued with a respect for South Pacific customs and cultures, Moana hits all the right grace notes with such efficiency that it’s easy to overlook the fact that the lead is once again a plucky and intelligent heroine who absorbs valuable life lessons, the sidekick is once again a garrulous and talkative overachiever, and the comic relief is once again provided by an animal (in this case, a brain-damaged chicken).

But why fight it when the results are this charming? Better to just settle back and allow the Disney magic to wash over you like a gentle wave lapping the shore.

ALLIED

/// Once the bread and butter of the movie industry, the World War II film has become a rarity in today’s Hollywood, tragically going the way of the dodo and the Western.

Allied attempts to bring back some of that old-school glamor and intrigue, placing a moving love story at the center of a wartime espionage caper. The result is itself a rarity: an elegant and understated movie for adults, one that’s as unfussy as it is engaging.

intelligence officer whose latest mission pairs him with French Resistance fighter Marianne Beausejour (Marion Cotillard).

Their assignment involves posing as man and wife while plotting the assassination of an important German dignitary; perhaps inevitably, they end up falling in love and getting married, a union that turns problematic once Marianne is suspected by the British high command of being an enemy agent.

Far too many movies relying on a big reveal play their hands too soon, but that’s not the case with Allied: Thanks to Steven Knight’s smart screenplay and Robert Zemeckis’ understated direction, the picture keeps the is-she-or-isn’t-she? guessing game percolating until the end. Also crucial to the story’s effectiveness are the performances by Pitt and Cotillard, both making the mutual attraction and admiration between their characters palpable.

We’ll always have Casablanca, of course, but those wanting to catch an old-fashioned melodrama on the big screen are advised to fall in.

RULES DON’T APPLY

// Warren Beatty snagged a richly deserved Academy Award for directing the unsung 1981 masterpiece Reds, but he’s never won an Oscar for his acting. Yet for approximately 50 years, he’s delivered a hefty number of dazzling turns, refusing to coast on his good looks and instead exploring characters who were often eccentric, offbeat or even downright psychotic.

With Rules Don’t Apply, it’s interesting to note that his acting remains as strong as ever while it’s his helming abilities that seem to have become a tad corroded over

time.

Working from a script he co-wrote with Bo Goldman, Beatty has fashioned a film that often seems as schizophrenic as its key character, the towering figure of Howard Hughes. As played by Beatty himself, the billionaire is an omniscient presence, even when the story focuses more on the budding relationship between two of his employees.

Folks who toil under Hughes aren’t allowed to date any of his contract actresses, which means chauffeur Frank Forbes (Alden Ehrenreich) and starlet Marla Mabrey (Lily Collins) have to keep their flirtatious parrying on the down low.

Viewers who can get on the film’s wavelength—and who aren’t looking for something as meaty as Martin Scorsese’s Hughes biopic The Aviator—will find (as I did) much to enjoy, but there’s no denying the picture is slight in the extreme, with most of its particulars dissipating from memory rather rapidly.

Still, it’s been 15 years since Beatty participated in any movie (headlining the woeful Town & Country), and it’s nice to see the maverick filmmaker still in the game, even if he’s no longer the one writing the rules.

BAD SANTA 2

// The 2003 Yuletide hit Bad Santa remains one of those holiday movies, like It’s a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Story, that’s impossible not to watch over and over (and over) again. Bad Santa 2 is basically like a copy that’s been produced on a faulty Xerox machine: Some parts have been duplicated perfectly, while other bits

are blurry or missing completely.

So while the foul language, misanthropic attitude, and cynical performances still come into focus in this belated sequel, even squinting might not pick up much in the way of clever plotting, genuine wit, and a sneaky subversive streak running throughout.

Yet the attention to cheerful vulgarity defines both movies, meaning that plenty of laughs can be found in this flagrantly foulmouthed follow-up. Granted, audiences may not respect themselves in the morning—heck, they may not even respect themselves during the movie (at my screening, many people lambasted the film on the way out, but, boy, were they sure howling during it!)—but those looking for seasonal fare that’s decidedly more naughty than nice will be properly rewarded.

As before, the key ingredient is the giveand-take between Billy Bob Thornton and Tony Cox as those holiday hoodlums Willie and Marcus—both actors pick up where they left off, as their antagonistic characters this time become involved in a heist brought together by Willie’s equally disreputable mom (Kathy Bates). Pudgy Thurman Merman (Brett Kelly) returns to again scamper after Willie, and he’s as dim-witted as ever.

Thurman is rather awkwardly shoehorned into the proceedings, sandwiched between the copious cussing and the copious copulation. Nevertheless, his presence is welcome, if only to see how he looks 13 years removed from the original film—and to see if he still puts his faith in Mary and Jesus and that talking walnut.

FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM

/// It’s tempting to warily eye this entity known as Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and see nothing more than a blatant cash-grab, an impersonal product designed to separate fans of all things Harry Potter from their hard-earned cash (or, in the case of teens, easily acquired allowance).

And initially, this film from David Yates (who directed the final four Potter pictures) and J.K. Rowling (in her screenwriting debut, marking the first time she’s adapted one of her own works) does seem to be coasting on its related mythology, feeling like warmed-over Hogwarts. Eventually, though, the saga of British wizard Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and his trip to America hits its stride, and the end result proves to be a welcome addition to the fantasy field.

Rather than just functioning as elongated exposition for the umpteen sequels to follow, this one is self-contained enough to satisfy on its own terms, following Newt 36 as he bumbles his way through the Big

Along the way, he raises the curiosity of a well-meaning witch (Katherine Waterston), grabs the attention of a high-ranking wizard (Colin Farrell), and inadvertently involves an innocent bystander (Dan Fogler) in his shenanigans.

Redmayne is affable and endearingly awkward as Newt; so, too, is Fogler, and the inclusion of a No-Maj (the American term for the UK’s Muggle) in a central role is largely what sets this apart from the more hermetically sealed Potter tales.

There are references to that other Rowling enterprise (Dumbledore is name-dropped), but with a fresh cast of characters, a significant change in locale, and various plotlines all working toward the same destination, this picture thankfully turns out to be its own beast.

THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN

/// A sparkling gem that joins The Fault in Our Stars and An Education as one of the brightest coming-of-age films of recent vintage, The Edge of Seventeen finds True Grit’s Hailee Steinfeld delivering a powerhouse performance as Nadine, a high school outcast whose only friend is the lovely Krista (Haley Lu Richardson).

Nadine also has a brother, Darian (Blake Jenner), who’s described by everyone as perfect, leading to Nadine feeling even more insecure about herself (as one teen notes, they’re like the movie Twins, with Darian as Schwarzenegger and Nadine as DeVito).

When Krista and Darian unexpectedly begin dating, Nadine feels betrayed and spirals further out of control, with her frazzled mom (Kyra Sedgwick) and her sarcastic teacher (Woody Harrelson) only able to do so much to calm her down.

The Edge of Seventeen marks Kelly Fremon Craig’s debut as director and her sophomore session as screenwriter—based on the evidence here, she’s clearly a welcome newcomer to the cinema scene, creating characters who feel painfully real and coaxing impressive turns from all the youngsters (Hayden Szeto is especially noteworthy as the nerdy Erwin).

Of course, when it comes to veterans, it’s always good to have Harrelson in your corner—as in The Hunger Games franchise, he’s again a mischievous delight, taking advantage of the scattered scenes that Craig has gifted to him.

He provides the humor, the teens provide the heart, and Craig provides one of the season’s must-see movies.

ARRIVAL

//// A friend once quipped that, given my reluctance to hand out four stars to more than just a couple of movies each year, I only award the highest rating if I “personally see God walking across the auditorium.”

Honestly, he’s not far off when it comes to the magnificent new movie Arrival. While there may have been no divine presence in the theater, there was certainly a religious movement taking place on the screen.

A motion picture that turns out to be far more focused on humanity than on otherworldly visitors, it’s a transcendent viewing experience that gets under the skin and into the heart.

Presented in a fragmented manner that perpetually keeps viewers off balance, the film centers on Louise Banks (Amy Adams), a college professor and linguist who’s approached by the military (repped

by Forest Whitaker) to help communicate with the extra-terrestrials whose enormous ships have taken root at 12 spots across the globe.

Louise and scientist Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) are transported to the one vessel that’s stateside, whereupon they seek to decipher the inky blots (basically Rorschach meets Ringu) squirted from the aliens’ appendages.

Meanwhile, other colleagues and other countries (particularly China) are growing more nervous by the minute, convinced that the invaders are of the Independence Day variety and are planning to decimate at will. For her part, Louise is filtering everything through scattered memories, most focusing on her young daughter.

Arrival is based on Ted Chiang’s short piece “Story of Your Life,” the type of work that sounds unfilmable.

Yet scripter Eric Heisserer (who before now was best known for penning the lamentable remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street and the lamentable prequel to The Thing) has contributed a screenplay that’s both literate and lyrical, one that moves with grace and provides plenty of catharsis along the way.

Director Denis Villeneuve, who’s about to have his third consecutive feature land on my year-end 10 Best list (his last two gems were Sicario and Prisoners), never overplays his hand, and he requests the same from others working on this production.

The visual effects are magnificent but never in your face, and while it’s apparent that the score comes from the same guy who crafted the superb one for Sicario, composer Johann Johannsson nevertheless uses the nerve-jangling refrains more sparingly, mixing it up with calmer if still somber stretches.

Adams is excellent in the central role, a part not unlike the one essayed by Sandra Bullock in Gravity. Indeed, Arrival stirs memories of several heady sci-fi outings, among them Gravity, Interstellar, Contact and, of course, Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

I’m not going to allow my adoration to render me so flippant as to idiotically state that it makes all those A-games look as insipid as The Adventures of Pluto Nash by comparison, but in many ways, it really is in a class by its beautiful self. CS
