It made me determined to spend less time debating the politics, and more time talking to my loved ones about what they might do in such an “unimaginable” situation—that is actually quite imaginable since it happens so often.

Simple question: Why, after decades of the same scenario played out dozens of times, with a trillion-dollar plus national security apparatus, can this country not seem to come up with a basic, standardized Active Shooter Protocol to educate Americans on preventive steps one can take in such an emergency to increase one’s chances of survival?

Because what we’re doing now?

Just as the shootings are similar in equipment and methodology, so are the social media arguments like Groundhog Day: The same cut-and-paste debates over and over, with no resolution, no common ground, no movement forward.

Like the shootings themselves, the debates are virtually identical and follow a well-worn pattern.

Within minutes, sometimes seconds, of news of a tragic mass shooting, people split into their respective camps and begin the now-ritual war of words.

Team Red would prefer that the shooter turn out to be a radicalized Muslim. Team Blue would prefer that the shooter turn out to be a white male gun nut.

We watch for the identity of the shooter to see if the incident will fit into the preconceived box we would most like it to fit neatly into.

Depending on how the news breaks, one Team gets bragging rights, the other going quiet and metaphorically shaking their fist like in the old cartoons: Rats, foiled again.

(After the San Bernardino shooting, I overheard a liberal friend lament, “I was really disappointed to find out it was ISIS.” At least she gets points for honesty. You may have similar stories from any number of points of view.)

This time, the victims were of a particular marginalized and oppressed group, LGBT citizens. The hate crime—and such an act can be both an act of terror and a hate crime, they aren’t mutually exclusive —lent an even more evil cast to an already horrible act.

That the attack also came during a debate over transgender bathrooms lent a domestic layer to the incident, reinforcing the fact that despite whatever gains the LGBT movement has made over the past decade, there remains a truly massive level of bigotry against them from many quarters, inside as well as outside our borders.

“I’m gonna die.”

“I love you mommy.”

It’s impossible for your heart not to break reading them, feeling the sheer panic of these people resigned to death, like so many others before them, paralyzed with fear.

We already spend all day fighting on Facebook. Why not spend a few minutes learning some practical survival tips?

You don’t have to call it an Active Shooter Protocol. Call it Fried Bananas. I don’t care.

It doesn’t have to involve guns or macho stuff. Just talk with family and friends about how to keep a cool head, about the importance of not panicking, about the important of staying on the move.

Anything but waiting to die, texting your last words.

I don’t want any more Facebook debates.

Do you? They haven’t changed one mind.

Working for policy change is great. It’s the American way.

But in the meantime what I want to know now is what to do if it happens next.

When it happens next. Because it will.

Is it wrong to have a game plan for an emergency? To “channel anxiety into awareness?”

It’s not sexy. And it’s not controversial.

Or it should’t be, anyway.

What I’m saying isn’t raw, unfocused emotion, so I won’t get a lot of likes for it.

But if it gets one person or one family to take their future into their own hands, it’s worth getting flamed over. cs

WHEN I moved to Savannah in 1993, the Gordon Street apartment I rented came with an amenity that worried me.

“Make sure to have this in your hand whenever you open the door,” the previous tenant said as she handed me a billy club.

Then she told me about Ricky Jivens.

The notorious gang leader received a life sentence the year before, but his legacy of terror — and presumably some of his lieutenants — lingered on the streets of Savannah.

I never had to use the billy club, I’m glad to say, and much has changed in Savannah in the last two decades. However, earlier this week in a widely shared Facebook post, Jivens’ name was invoked.

The author, who described how she was affected by an encounter with a violent criminal in the early ‘90s, asked, “And look at Savannah now...any better, any worse?”

With 27 homicides so far this year, most people aren’t likely to note an improvement. The frustration and fear have fueled calls for more cops, more surveillance cameras, and — I kid you not — internment camps.

People are also balking at any public investments, no matter how beneficial, they perceive as not directly related to fighting crime.

Reasonable people recognize violent crime in Savannah as serious, complex, and multigenerational problem. They understand it’s not just about law enforcement and criminal justice, but also related to education, jobs, poverty, substance abuse and other issues. That’s what makes

If a simple cure existed, we would have already administered it. Can you imagine the public outcry if we knew exactly how to significantly reduce crime and had the tools at our disposal, but were hesitant to use them?

That’s exactly the situation we are in now with another threat claiming the lives of residents and visitors in our city. Streets designed to maximize the speed of motor vehicles are deadly, especially when they are located in areas where many people get around by means other than automobiles.

Examples? MLK. Henry. Drayton.

Anderson. Whitaker.

And Bay Street.

If we were designing these streets from scratch, would we emulate their current configurations? Would we encourage high speed motor vehicle traffic, including the largest of trucks, on streets we know people of all ages and abilities would need to cross?

People who want safer streets must encourage our leaders to use the ordinance, because others will fight them tooth and nail to prevent them from doing so.

Early last month, when Mayor Eddie DeLoach expressed his legitimate concerns about truck traffic on Bay Street and suggested measures could be taken to make the street safer for pedestrians, critics howled.

When Alderman Bill Durrence proposed exploring ways to calm traffic on Drayton and Whitaker streets, opponents called the idea “insane.”

There are 30,000 suicides every year and 8,000 are combat veterans. They’re all drugged up. They get their prescriptions from the Veterans Administration. They use opiates, all kinds of heroin, laced with prescription drugs.

We go to a lot of towns where there’s no Safe Houses at all. If a young woman is getting beat up, where can she go? If a child is abused in the home, where can they run to?

Shame is what keeps the victim from telling others what happened. We have hard data, anonymous surveys.

One survey we did, a woman identified four generations of violence in her family.

CURIOUSLY, of all the civil rights activism in the 1960s and ‘70s, perhaps the least-remembered and least-taught in our schools is the struggle for the civil rights of Native Americans.

Which, given the shameful history of our country’s treatment of them, is probably par for the course.

One of the seminal figures in Native American civil rights is Dennis Banks, of the Ojibwa Tribe of Minnesota. Cofounder of the American Indian Movement (AIM), Banks was beside AIM leader Russell Means during the Sioux tribe’s 1973 armed standoff with the U.S. government at Wounded Knee, South Dakota.

(Movie fans will know both Banks and Means from their later roles in the 1992 film Last of the Mohicans.)

Outcry over corruption at the Pine Ridge Reservation erupted into open defiance as AIM decided to take over the nearby town of Wounded Knee, which has great symbolic value to American Indians as the site of an 1890 massacre by the U.S. Army.

The 1973 standoff ended two months after it began, with several dead from gunfire. Means and Banks faced over 200 years plus life in prison each, but the cases against them were thrown out due to prosecutorial misconduct.

Now 79, Banks has spent the last decade going on coast-to-coast “Longest Walks” across the country, raising awareness for causes such as diabetes on reservations and equal treatment for Native people.

This year’s Longest Walk is dedicated to fighting domestic and substance abuse in the wake of last year’s savage murder of Banks’s 31-year-old granddaughter, Rose Downwind, by her ex-boyfriend.

Accompanied by friends, colleagues, and extended family, the still-spry Banks—who fights his own diabetes purely by exercise and managing his diet—was hosted in the Savannah area by the folks at the farmto-table Green Bridge Farm in Effingham 12 County, where we spoke with him.

Is the breakup of traditional Native American society mostly to blame?

Does it really make a difference to Native Americans who’s in charge in Washington?

You know who did the best job for Native people? President Nixon. Nixon was the only sitting president who gave land back to our people. He gave land back to the Taos Pueblo, gave land back to the Menominee in Wisconsin, gave land back to the Klamath in Oregon. He was a friend of Native Americans.

And ironically, Nixon was president during the Wounded Knee incident.

The occupation began Feb. 27, 1973. Hostilities, as they say, broke out the same night.

We put up roadblocks to prevent anybody from coming into Wounded Knee. We said anybody that wants to leave can leave. But if they want to get back in they have to have one of our flags, the Wounded Knee flag.

We had a meeting that night. We heard some noise, and someone rushed in saying,

“They’re shooting at us! What do we do?”

Russell Means just turned and said, “Fire back! Return fire.” That was our automatic response.

That was Day One. Seventy-one days we were there. We were surrounded by armored personnel carriers filled with FBI agents, 300 surrounding Wounded Knee, along with 90 U.S. Marshals. Plus any number of local police who came along just to have a chance to shoot some Indians.

The FBI called a meeting at one of the neutral roadblocks. They said, “We’re going to end this today. Sometime after 6 p.m. we’re going to lay down a blanket of tear gas and then come in with force.”

They said if we wanted to send out the women and children they’d have school buses waiting to transport them safely back to Pine Ridge.

Russ told us the news. And we responded, “We always say we’re going to die out here. Maybe this is the day.”

One older woman, named Nellie Red Owl, she was about five-foot-one and had a little .22. She stood up and said, “I came here to fight. I didn’t come here to leave.”

Another lady, she had come with her nine-year-old son. She had told him they might both die there together. She said she told him, “Today might be that day.”

With all these strong women supporting us, how could we give up?

But what if the women had said, “Put down your guns and surrender?”

Would you have taken their advice? (short pause) …. No. There were some white guys there, with a group called Vietnam Veterans Against the War. They knew explosives, and had brought some in with them.

We were in two-way radio contact with the FBI. We said, we’re going to give you a little demonstration of what’s in store for you if you come for us.

We set off about six packets of explosives. Everybody hit the ground. I thought, “Whoa, this is it.”

We found out later that during the standoff, Nixon’s Chief of Staff H.R. Haldeman had told the President about the FBI’s plan to go in with overwhelming force.

We learned that the President stood up, very angry, and said, “You mean to tell me a ragtag band of Indians has you buffaloed out there and you guys can’t end this? So now you want me to sign an order for their death warrants? It’s going to be a massacre. Not on my watch! Go back to the Justice Department and come up with a plan that ends in peace.”

They did, and finally the head of the U.S. Marshals announced that there would be no attempt to retake Wounded Knee, and that was that.

You remained friends with Russell Means for the rest of his days.

Oh yeah, we stayed in touch. I was with Russ when he died a few years ago. And we did Last of the Mohicans together.

How does it feel to have been through all that and decades later be a movie star? That’s pretty great, right?

It’s only great because I’m alive! (laughs) What are the bigger lessons of what you and Russell and AIM did in 1973?

The U.S. government did change a lot of major policy. New laws gave Indian people self-determination rights, including the right to subcontract with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. We could use Indian architects, Indian construction companies.

But overpowering all of it today is the suicide rate of young Native men and women. The earliest age we’re finding right now is nine years old. They’ve been mistreated at home, mistreated in the schools, mistreated by poverty conditions.

Pine Ridge sits on Highway 18, and that’s a cartel route for pushing the drugs through South Dakota into Minnesota.

The cartel is very big and out of control.

To this day Pine Ridge is still one of the poorest reservations in the country. Not even the casino helps. Some tribes even with casinos just break even. And when you break even in the casino business, that means you lose! (laughs) You can break even in other businesses, but with casinos it’s not supposed to work that way.

You’ve got Trump saying to build a wall between us and Mexico. But there are tribal people who have families living on both sides of that border. First cousins.

Native people are generally against any kind of wall. We sometimes joke that we ought to build a wall all along the Eastern coast so no more Pilgrims can come in!

Do Native Americans generally want to see the reservations dismantled?

The goal is to make them serve Native people better. The U.S. Supreme Court has already ruled we have a right to hunt and fish on and off the reservation, on ancestral land. And they ruled that not only do we have the right to be in the gaming industry, but we have a right to build the casinos.

So we have a bigger piece of the pie than we had before. The stage was set during the hectic ‘60s and ‘70s that paved the way for big policy changes.

If you had a magic wand, you really wouldn’t make reservations vanish?

No. Without our land we have no ties to our spiritual beliefs. The land is everything. cs

Juneteenth: ‘If you don’t know your history you are liable to repeat it’

Annual celebration takes place in 38th Street Park

WHILE AN upcoming celebration of Juneteenth in Savannah this weekend represents a continuing effort to remind us of the importance of the annual celebration, the story of Juneteenth itself is defined by its significance as a milestone in American history.

The day June 19, 1865 stands as the date when the last slaves were freed. Since then, Juneteenth, as it came to be called, has come to symbolize the struggle for freedom that defined generations of people within the United States. Today, it is celebrated in more than 200 cities across America including Savannah.

Savannah has been participating in the annual celebration since 2009 by hosting its own festival in the 38th Street Park, which is organized every year by The Daughters of Mary Magdalene.

This organization consists of individuals who have a special interest in helping the city to continue growing in a positive direction.

Among them is Ivan Cohen, the secretary of the Daughters of Mary Magdalene, who seems to have an even deeper connection to the festival than others.

“When I was younger, this is the park that I came to a lot, this festival enables me to give back to the area,” he says.

The location was specifically chosen in order to attract those who represent a community of people that may feel neglected at times.

“It’s important to let them know that they are a part of this city and that they count,” says Cohen.

As usual, the festival will feature a variety of activities that will be free and open 14 to the public. These activities will include

educational and fun amusements for children provided by the ILA local chapter 1414, complemented by the free food that will be provided by Comcast.

Also, there will be live musical entertainment featuring genres, such as funk, gospel, and hip-hop, intended to appeal to people of all ages.

In addition to entertainment, there will also be a number of honorees who will be recognized for their dedication to the community with the Georgia Outstanding Citizens Award. Among those honorees is Jordan Ogden who as a Savannah native feels a special need to give her time to the city as they host the festival.

“It’s always hot out there, but you forget about the heat and have fun. So I’m honored that they’ll have me come back this time in a different capacity”, she says.

Ogden has participated in the festival since 2013, when as the director of the Ms. Black Georgia Pageant, she has emceed the activities and helped lead spelling bees for students.

Now as the owner of the Impressive School of Social Graces, she continues to use her roles as tools for bettering the youth.

“I’m big on youth being self-aware, knowing what their talents are, and speaking and communicating with confidence,” says Ogden.

Brian Dawsey, who is the assistant director of Admissions for Recruitment at Savannah State University, will also be honored at the festival.

“I was in awe when I found out they would be honoring me this year”, he says.

Dawsey has been participating in the

festival for the past six years and emphasizes how important the history of Juneteenth is.

“We must know this, we must learn this and we must not be afraid. If you don’t know your history you are liable to repeat it” says Dawsey.

As a Savannah native also who only grew up a few blocks down from the 38th Street Park, he feels a special connection to that community itself and recognizes its needs.

“The area is very impoverished, it’s a lot of kids whose families are barely making ends meet,” says Dawsey. In his role within the Office of Admissions, he has made it a priority to help young students to overcome those odds by helping them to further their education.

While the honorees and activities are important to the festival, the most important thing to many of those involved is to continue to emphasize the history of the celebration.

As historian Dr. Jamal Toure says, “It’s important for people to know the past, you have to tell them your history.”

This year as the reader of the history of the Juneteenth during the festival and an expert on African-American and U.S. history, Toure views this event as an opportunity to inspire people towards continued progress.

“It’s about continuing the story, to let people know that you are not limited to any boundary,” he says.

This story he refers to is one defined by the perseverance and patience of countless enslaved African-Americans in the face of obvious challenges. Following the

secession of several Southern states, President Abraham Lincoln looked for ways to cease the rebellion and bring the nation back together.

He decided that he would issue the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862 to notify the rebellious states that they would need to cease their actions or their slaves would be declared free on January 1, 1863.

Despite this threat, those Confederate states would not back down and the Civil War would begin to intensify. This resistance would be the cause of a prolonged journey to freedom for many slaves.

At least 8000,000 slaves were unaffected by the proclamation either because it only specified the freeing of slaves in rebellious states or because their state simply ignored it. Instead it would take until the end of the Civil War and the ratification of the 13th amendment before slavery would be formally outlawed across the United States.

The last slaves would be freed in Texas when General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston on Juneteenth and issued General Order No.3 to inform the slaves of their freedom over two years after the signing of the proclamation.

This history is what makes the Juneteenth festival so significant and also why this year’s theme, Reclaim, Re-educate, Rebuild! represents a larger meaning. cs

If the sun goes out, how long till the earth freezes?

In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the planet-killer device absorbs the sun to do its dirty work. This got me to wondering: If the sun suddenly went out, how long would it take us to freeze solid? ­—Barry NOTWITHSTANDING the primary source you cite­—i.e., some Disney focus group’s idea of a movie plot­—it strikes me that there are a few fundamental physical laws of the universe that just might work against the sun’s being abruptly extinguished. But OK, I’ll play along. What might conceivably produce such an effect here on earth? The sun could be eaten by a black hole, I guess, in which case the temperature over in these parts is going to be the least of our worries. Some enormous foreign body could pass between us and the sun. Or, in what’s probably the most realistic scenario, a passing high-mass object (black hole, rogue planet, etc) could pull our planet away from the sun, sending us spinning into interstellar oblivion.

(Serious sci-fi fans­—not your Star Wars types, I mean the real geeks­—may have come across this conceit in a 1950s short

story by Fritz Leiber called “A Pail of Air.”) Anyway, let’s say something like that just . . . happened, and that we’re not too worried about the various other problematic implications of such an event. We’re mainly worried about staying warm. Let’s start by compiling the sources of heat we currently enjoy, with calculations from the prolific scratchpad of my assistant Una: Core and mantle. The earth contains enormous amounts of residual heat from its formation, slowly being transferred from the core up through the mantle and eventually to the earth’s crust. Figure eight trillion watts from the core and 18 trillion from the mantle, for a total of 26 trillion watts.

Radioactive decay. Many elements on earth­—uranium, thorium, potassium, et al­—decay continuously, with heat a principle byproduct of this process. Una estimated we can probably put the heat energy here in the neighborhood of 13 trillion watts.

Human-made heat. Currently worldwide energy production, including fossil fuels and nuclear (but not solar and wind­—no sun, remember?), kicks in about 18 trillion watts.

Tidal energy from the moon. Heatwise, we don’t get a whole lot of help from our little satellite sidekick: just 3.6 trillion watts.

So, about 60 trillion watts, give or take.

Which may sound like plenty until we quantify the sun’s contribution to our current heat budget: 114,600 trillion watts, or about 1,900 times what’s generated here on earth.

What happens when the lights go out?

According to Una’s calculations, the equilibrium temperature on the surface of the earth would, after the planet cooled fully, settle out at 43.6 degrees Kelvin, aka negative 381 degrees Fahrenheit, aka not exactly A Sunday on La Grande Jatte­—cold enough that almost all our atmosphere would turn to liquid. (Hence “A Pail of Air.”) And that’s assuming the moon stays

with us. The estimate drops one degree Fahrenheit without it.

How long would it take us to get there?

Depends on a variety of factors: how the heat-transfer process changes as water vapor leaves the atmosphere, how quickly heat circulates in the oceans and up through the earth’s crust, and so forth.

In the best case, the average temperature drops to 32 degrees Fahrenheit in about 400 days, and to zero degrees Fahrenheit in 879 days. These averages, however, include the oceans, and the heat retained there will largely stay there, not doing us much good. If we focus instead on the 10 percent of the biosphere closest to us, we’ve only got about 38 days till the average temperature is 32 degrees Fahrenheit, and 83 days till it’s down to zero. The carbon dioxide in the air turns to dry ice on day 236, and on day 503 the oxygen in the atmosphere liquefies.

Can humanity survive? Sure, at least for a while, but ideally we’d have a couple decades to prepare. The earth’s crust is a great insulator, and we could build underground warrens that tap into buried fossil fuels for energy; we’ll want to hook up some nuclear generators too. This gives

us heat to warm ourselves by, electricity for charging our Kindles, and light for greenhouses. And of course there’s that core and mantle heat, which obviously gets more intense the deeper we dig. At the bottom of South Africa’s TauTona gold mine, for instance, nearly two and a half miles down, the air temperature is a balmy 130 degrees Fahrenheit­—a good deal hotter than the recent record-setting (and lethal) heat wave in India, so at some point we may encounter the perverseseeming situation of needing to rig up an air-conditioning system. One foresees a few other problems, too: a population of pasty depressives, living a dank subterranean existence with dim long-term prospects. Come to think of it, that sounds like the sort of society that sci-fi geeks living in their parents’ basements will be perfectly optimized for. At which point, I suppose, the operating cinematic reference becomes Revenge of the Nerds.

Bicyclist dies after collision at end of Bike Ride Across Georgia

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Accident Investigations Team (MAIT) responded to Bay and Lincoln streets, where a Clermont, Florida, bicyclist was fatally injured in a vehicular accident involving a dump truck at about 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 11.

“Bicyclist, Judy Grossman, 61, was participating in a Bike Ride Across Georgia (BRAG) tour. Grossman was riding in the right east bound lane of Bay Street on her Lite Speed Road Bike,” police say.

“At the same time, Alexis Montero Corvea, 32, was passing the group of bicyclists in the left lane of East Bay Street in a 1999 Ford Dump Truck. Man shot at East 33rd and Atlantic

Detectives are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred near of East 33rd Lane and Atlantic Avenue, June 9.

Metro responded to the scene at approximately 10:20 p.m. finding Theron Robbins, 32, suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He succumbed to his injuries.

“Investigators do not believe this was a random occurrence,” police say.

Suspect in Savannah Mall shooting turns himself in

Police have arrested and charged a 16-year-old with the robbery and shooting of 63-year-old Marie Cochran at the Savannah Mall on Friday, June 10.

“Jerry Chambers, 16, turned himself in at SCMPD Headquarters Saturday night,” police say.

The shooting happened at about 10 a.m. in the mall parking lot. “Cochran was reportedly shot when she fought back during a robbery,” police say.

Police seek additional suspects who fled the scene in a black Lexus IS 250 sedan, with dark tinted windows.

Suspect arrested in home invasion

Police are asking the public’s help identifying suspects linked to home invasion that occurred on June 3, at 5 a.m. in the 2200 block of Bonaventure Rd. Officers responded to a report of a shooting at the residence and found the victim suffering from a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Detectives have arrested a man in connection, Jay Richards, 27, on June 7, and charged him with burglary.

Facebook posts by the victim over the weekend were very critical of police reaction, claiming that his dog died partially as a result of police incompetence, and that he knew who shot him but detectives told him they didn’t work on the weekend.

“Since the home invasion occurred on June 3, a very active investigation has occurred and it continued through the weekend. Unfortunately our detectives have a large case load and are simultaneously investigating additional priority violent crimes. We are reviewing our actions in this case and IF mistakes have been made we will correct them,” said Chief Joseph H. Lumpkin.

Detectives are asking the public’s help in identifying a man suspected of a theft that occurred June 2 in the 12000 block of Abercorn Street.

The suspect walked into Southside car dealership, stole unattended purses from two female employees, and then went to a nearby department store where he made more than $1,400 in illegal purchases on stolen credit cards.

• The Internet pornography behemoth PornHub recently added to the glut of physical fitness “apps” with one designed to help users tone up sexual muscles. The BangFit’s routines include the “squat and thrust,” the “missionary press,” and other ways to practice what the company describes as the “one activity people are always motivated to do and (for) which they are never too busy.” (Imagine, for example, wrote Mashable.com, “quantify(ing) your dry humps.”)

The Continuing Crisis

As Libya’s central bank struggles to stabilize a halting economy, it could surely use the estimated $184 million in gold and silver coins that Moammar Gadhafi minted but left buried in an underground vault in the coastal city of Beyda, but the treasure is inaccessible because central bank officials don’t know the lock’s combination (as The Wall Street Journal reported in May). The latest plan is to have a locksmith squeeze through a 16-by-16-inch hole in the outer vault’s concrete wall and once inside to try his hand. Obviously, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals was not pleased, but school district officials called the exercise a valid demonstration of the “tensile strength of the organ” and only reluctantly agreed to investigate further.

• When Triston Chase, 20, missed his court date in April in Harnett County, North Carolina, on financial fraud charges, it was revealed that his arrest in December had come when he had been found “residing” illegally, as a civilian, in a barracks at Fort Bragg — in a facility housing the Army’s 3rd Special Forces Group. According to a prosecutor, Chase had been posing as an explosive ordnance disposal specialist “for months.” The official investigation of Special Forces’ barracks “security” was still underway at the time of Chase’s court date.

(2) Grady Carlson, 58, went to the Carolina Title Loans office in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on May 25 to apply for a high-interest “payday” loan — and nervously paced while answering questions. The Carolina employee asked if anything was wrong, and Carlson allegedly disclosed that he needed money — fast! — to purchase methamphetamine. A subsequent police search turned up a glass container and drugs.

Recurring Themes (Cow Edition)

• For years, India has been concerned about the gas-release problem posed by its nearly 300 million cows (and 200 million more gas-intensive animals), but researchers in Kerala state revealed a promising breeding answer in May: dwarf cows (about one-fourth the size, producing somewhat less milk but one-seventh the manure and one-10th the methane).

(Pound for pound, methane traps 25 times as much heat as carbon dioxide.)

(Bonus: The New York Times Style Book apparently now accepts the word “farting” in formal copy — while reporting that “belching” is the far more serious methane problem.)

• In the early years of News of the Weird, urban readers learned of the custom of various Western locales’ charity cow-patty “bingo” games in which cows are fed and turned loose on a field of wagered-upon squares. (In fact, in 1997 Canada’s Nova Scotia Gaming Control Commission temporarily banned the game while it investigated whether it could be “fixed” by training the cow to favor certain relief spots.) The event lives on, but a charity fundraiser in Great Falls, Montana, in May was halted when the cow jumped over a fence and had to be chased down. Rather than await the now-nervous (or perhaps constipated) cow, the contest winner was selected by random draw.

News of the Weird Classic (June 2012)

All U.S. states have forms of no-fault divorce, but England still requires that couples prove adultery, abandonment or “unreasonable behavior,” which leads to strange claims, according to an April (2012) New York Times dispatch from London. For instance, one divorcing woman’s petition blamed her husband’s insistence that she speak only in Klingon.

Other examples of “unreasonable” behavior (gathered by the Times of London): a husband’s objecting to the “malicious” preparation of his hated tuna casserole, another’s 15-year silence (except for writing him Post-It Notes), a husband’s distorting the fit of his wife’s outfits by frequently wearing them, and one’s insistence that a pet tarantula reside in a glass case beside the marital bed.

It’s rock ‘n’ roll doctrine that great songwriting comes from great pain. Soul singer, singer-songwriter, and keyboardist Kira Small gets it.

A breakup fueled her latest album, 3 A.M., an outpouring devastation, loneliness, and, then, resolution. It’s Lemonade’s timeline of emotional processing with less baseball bats and more contemplative latenight solo drives down the open highway.

Exploring the magic of the witching hour, when you’re jerked awake in either panic, fear, or revelation, the album possesses a certain lyrical immediacy and swoony vibe that does its moniker right.

With a voice like whiskey spilled on a plush velvet sofa, Small opens up her world and lets listeners in to experience the confusion and hurt through her eyes.

It’s highly relatable: simple objects trigger memories in the wake of Small’s solitude, from a billboard advertisement to a hotel pen, reminders of the little things that can make us so undone. At its core, Small has made a blues-inspired soul record, and

many a chorus reminds us of this in timeless language. There are even nods to classic soul throughout 3 A.M., from a Sam Cooke wink in the opener with line “you bring it all home to me” to the swing of certain builds.

3 A.M. begins with the leaving, with the hurt and confusion of the first moments of a breakup. Sadness and frustration builds as memories flood in and questions rise (“All I heard were suitcase wheels on the floor/is that what love sounds like when it dies?” “How can you be gone/and still surround me?”).

We see Small, ash dangling from her cigarette, swilling the last sips of whiskey that cling to melting ice cubes. We witness her spiral into self-blame and obsession (“The hunger in your kiss – I can’t stop remembering/the heat of your skin – I can’t stop remembering/the look only a lover knows – I can’t stop remembering/I can’t stop remembering, I can’t stop remembering/ I’d give anything to stop remembering/ but I can’t forget a thing...at 3 A.M.”). she is, vulnerable, bare, honest. By allowing listeners to drop in and see her in this state, Small lets us truly feel her triumphant emergence from the pain, which begins to peer through on “Firestarter” (“I put my heart in an arsonist’s hands/but I won’t burn again…ashes, ashes, I won’t fall down”).

Second-to-last track “Learn to Forgive” shows the protagonist doing just that. By the closer, “Gift That Keeps On Giving,” it’s out of the woods and on to a new life.

“I found my courage, found my pride,” Small sings over woozy organ and snappy guitar licks. “With my feet on solid ground, I see the blessings that abound.”

“The message of the album is that I learned not to harden myself,” Small disclosed in promotion of 3 A.M. “I could have shut down and said ‘screw it, I’m done,’ but this wasn’t love’s fault. It strengthened me, I began to genuinely trust myself, and for the first time in my life I got angry and realized I deserved better.”

Inspired by the great crooners like Aretha Franklin, Adele, Bonnie Raitt, and Norah Jones, Small embodies a refinedyet-unfussy, elegant-yet-approachable, and down-to-earth torch singer persona.

Curling with smoky jazz, blues, and gospel, Small’s clear, sultry voice can go from a misty and contemplative lilt to a full-bodied, resolute belt.

3 A.M. is the latest in a long string of impressive releases from Small. The Music City resident has established her

own blue-eyed soul aesthetic over the years while maintaining a career as an in-demand session singer, guesting with the likes of Willie Nelson, Garth Brooks, Peter Frampton, Wynonna Judd, Ray Price, Randy Travis, Kenny Rogers, Ronnie Milsap, Deep Purple, Ray Stevens, Jimmy Hall, Jamey Johnson and more.

She’s also shared the stage with favorites like Martina McBride, Radney Foster and Lynda Carter (Wonder Woman), and you can even catch her in a recurring role as a backup singer on ABC’s Nashville (which, hooray, just got renewed for a fifth season!). For two years, Small was a member of Berklee College of Music’s Voice Department Faculty.

Small comes to Tybee Post Theater on her album release tour, eager to share 3 A.M. with the world. Renewed in her personal growth, it’s sure to be a powerful evening of inspiring resilience, authenticity, and devotion to one’s true self.

The Malpass Brothers kick it old-school Merle Haggard’s mentees carry on country tradition by anna chandler

Just From his rich, old-soul voice, one might not think Christopher Malpass to be a young man in his 20s. But from years of studying the greats, from Johnny Cash to mentor Merle Haggard, Christopher and his brother, Taylor, have forged a retrocountry sound with timeless appeal.

“Growing up, we stayed with my grandparents,” the Goldsboro, North Carolinaborn Christopher shares. “My grandfather had a little honky-tonk that had a jukebox in it. He saved all the records off the jukebox—nobody really showed it to us, we just heard that music and it struck an interest and we never wanted to hear anything else.

It was love at first listen.”

The brothers have been playing as a group for 16 years to date.

“I started when I was about eight years old,” Christopher recounts. “[Taylor] started when he was about 10.”

Taylor was inspired to pick up the mandolin after finding harmonies to Christopher’s melodies.

“He branched off and learned guitar, as well,” Christopher says. “We never stopped; we’ve always worked together ever since.”

It’s a collaborative writing process for the boys. Typically, Taylor sketches out an idea for a song and Christopher gets it on paper, fine-tuning it to vintage country perfection and writing the majority of the lyrics.

“We work off each other,” Christopher explains of the siblings’ process.

According to Christopher, a great country song comes from a true story and hardearned experience. After all, they learned from the best.

The one and only Merle Haggard saw The Malpass Brothers when they opened for him at a concert in North Carolina.

For seven years, The Malpass Brothers touring alongside him and releasing their own music through Haggard’s label, Hag Records.

“We consider our music retro because it harkens the sound of another era, but we try to give it our own, as well,” Christopher explains. “It’s hard, old country music!” and people that I knew when I was young,” Haggard once said of the band. “They have their hearts into what we call ‘traditional’ country music. It’s valuable to me that we cultivate the young talent for that kind of music.”

“He was like a grandfather to us,” says Christopher of Haggard, who passed on April 6, 2016.

In the wake of tremendous loss, Christopher was inspired to pen a song in memory of his mentor.

“My wife and Taylor and I flew out to Merle’s funeral,” he shares. “Somebody said something about how ‘you got to tell them about your time with Merle.’ The title came to me. I wrote it on the plane ride.”

“My Time with Merle” is a touching, song full of heart and respect. The band tracks a new album beginning in October; Christopher’s ode will be included.

The last Malpass Brothers album was

produced by legendary International Bluegrass Music Hall of Famer Doyle Lawson.

Working with a master of roots music has allowed The Malpass Brothers to grow as musicians and explore their unique abilities.

“He seems like he’s a blood-related relative now!” chuckles Christopher of their relationship with Lawson.

Lawson is responsible for introducing The Malpass Brothers to their record label, Organic Records, based out of Asheville, North Carolina.

“They’re a label where we can do what we felt we wanted to do and be true and not be changed by a label,” explains Christopher. “They’ve been a good fit for us; they understand what we do, and that makes a difference.”

With their father on bass, the group is certainly a family affair.

“It’s pretty good!” says

Christopher of playing and touring in close quarters with family. “We all work together well. As brothers, you don’t always agree, but that’s part of the deal. And we get along pretty well most of the time.”

Hearty as down-home cooking and as earthy as dirt-scuffed cowboy boots, The Malpass Brothers’ sound will throw you back to yesteryear with its classic form and vintage inflection.

Say farewell at The Jinx as the band opens for Little Tybee by anna chandler

Culture Vulture’s Nick Gilbert, James Weber, and Mathew Pelton aren’t Savannah natives. But the sound they hatched together among Savannah’s raucous and deeply supportive house show scene is a true born-and-bred Savannahian.

Musical academics schooled in jazz, punk, ska, and classical music, the trio moved to town armed with a wealth of experience and knowledge. After four years of cultivating a truly unique, progressive sound built on math rock tendencies and killer dynamics, the band is ready to make the next move: Los Angeles.

“We’re moving to L.A. for a number of reasons,” says trombonist Gilbert. “It’s a big city, and we want to try some stuff on the West Coast. That’s pretty much what we’re looking for: something crazy, something different.”

A big fish in the little-but-mighty pond of Savannah, the band is excited to dive into a bigger pool of talent and venues.

“There are more bands that sound like us with the math rock thing going out there,” guitarist Weber points out.

“Someone once told me there are about 150 active bands in Savannah,” Gilbert says. “You’re going from that number to thousands on thousands. There’s bound to be some stuff that’s going to work well with us, I think. Honestly, I’m just excited to meet some new people and see how the move will affect our sound for future releases.”

Indeed: there hasn’t quite been anything like Culture Vulture in Savannah’s scene in recent memory, and there likely won’t be for awhile. An eruption of unpredictable, technical arrangements, Pelton’s jazz-minded drumming, Gilbert’s trombone bubbling, popping, and roaring through an intricate pedal arrangement, and Pelton’s dizzyingly good guitar work, the sound is so unique, it just kinda goes with everything.

Surprisingly, Culture Vulture actually started out as a Mars Volta-style heavy, progressive rock band.

Weber, Pelton, and Sara Clash (Broken Glow, Tokalos) played the band’s early shows; Clash’s face was encrusted in corpse paint and, once, a dog joined them on keys.

“We had these organ pedals—that was our bass sound,” laughs Weber. “This dog came over and started playing them during our set, while Sara was screaming her

While an amazing mental image—a husky on keys and the typically bluesy, melodic Clash howling and looking like a black metal queen—the sound didn’t quite stick, and evolved into a jazz-influenced math rock blend. Then Gilbert moved to town, trombone in tow.

“Once it became the three of us, it became more jazz—slow and low,” says Gilbert. “On top of that, the scene itself shaped us in a lot of ways.”

One-of-a-kind in a sea of punk, metal, singer-songwriter, folk, garage, and psych sounds, Culture Vulture became a staple of the house show scene.

“We got thrown on all these punk shows,” recalls Weber. “We were playing with Anxiety Junkies, Beneath Trees, Unicycle Escape Pod...”

“We had the energy go up and we got louder almost immediately,” says Gilbert.

“Almost immediately, we got really fast.

One of the first shows we played, our song ‘Ventura’ was at least 40 clicks faster than the recording!”

The diverse billing was an invaluable influence on the band, resulting in the eclectic stylings of March’s Bomb Shelter Records release, Girls’ Night.

Constantly inspired to push their sound, Gilbert and Weber say the songs they’re composing for their third release are more pared down than their last album.

“There are less effects,” says Gilbert.

“The writing creates the texture as opposed to the effects creating texture.

How things are being placed when you’re playing notes gives the song the feeling.”

After Saturday’s Jinx show, the band hits the road, heading to the Northeast to

see their families, share their sound, give some hugs before the big cross-country move.

Gilbert, Weber, and Pelton plan on throwing themselves fully and completely into the band once they land in California.

“The hope is just to tour as much as humanly possible,” says Gilbert. “West Coast, then probably more of a national thing; we hope to be back through here.”

Culture Vulture looks forward to joining Atlanta’s Little Tybee for Friday’s bill. The progressive indie-folk band has been making soulful, jazz-infused sounds since 2008 and just released their fourth LP, Little Tybee, on June 3.

“The new album is so good!” says an enthused Weber. “Their musicianship definitely shines through; some of those guitar solos are just out-of-this-world cool.”

There’s that Picasso quote: “Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.”

Few bands quite embody that mentality like Little Tybee and Culture Vulture.

And while they’re quite different from one another in sound, it’s a perfect pairing.

“We want to see everyone out there—if not for any other reason, than because we’ve formed a lot of bonds with people in this scene and love seeing them,” says Gilbert.”A lot of people who come out to show have become our good friends. We want to see them before we go. And make a show of it.” CS

Give a big salute to America’s troops with a traveling showgirl troupe!

The Pin-Ups on Tour show recreates the magic of the Hollywood Canteen, a haven for clinking drinks, dancing, and entertainment for servicemen in the 1940s.

The Wormhole will transform and whisk audiences away back to that time as vintage-styled pin-ups dance, comedians tickle funny bones, variety acts spice it up, and smoldering lounge singers croon period-appropriate tunes. It’s all for the cause of low or no-cost entertainment for veterans. All proceeds from the show and raffle tickets go to supporting the troupe’s work entertaining America’s veterans inside and outside VA hospitals.

The night’s not over after the dazzling performers step off-stage: The 9th Street Rompers, a gypsy jazz/blues/rockabilly/tango band will keep everyone swept up in the past with upright bass, resonator guitar, ukulele, kazoo, and shared vocals.

While they put on a heckuva show, don’t expect a cornball, novelty performance: the band prefers to impart the modern relevance of their style in their shows.

Who holds the power to move forward?

For those who support a more robust public art culture in Savannah, the good news is that the City’s mural policy remains unchanged after a hearing at the June 2 meeting of the Historic Site and Monument Commission.

The bad news? The City’s mural policy remains unchanged.

The HSMC called the hearing to review the efficiency and usage of the existing policy that was first conceived in 2012 by artists and SeeSAW founders Matt Hebermehl and James “Dr. Z” Zdaniewski and passed by City Council in 2013. Before that, anything on a wall other than a solid block of color that could be seen from a public rightof-way—whether on public property or private—was considered signage or graffiti and subject to removal by the city.

As it stands, artistic citizens now have an established protocol to navigate permission for their projects as well as a set of standards set by the HSMC, a division of the Metropolitan Planning Commission. (The MPC oversees zoning and development and makes recommendations to City Council but is not a part of City government.)

“For me, the process has always been very smooth,” says artist Jose Ray, who has contributed several murals around the city, including the façade of Revolution Yoga and the live oak reading nook at Drayton and 40th streets.

“The initial paperwork is thorough enough that by the time you get in front of the committee, they have a clear under28 standing of your plan, and the hearing

itself is pretty easy. The main thing is to plan ahead, and be sure that a scheduled hearing falls within your timeline.”

The deal is simple enough: If you want to paint a wall, just fill out an application.

And wait.

For some, the laborious nature of the process can be discouraging. HSMC meets monthly and often sends back projects for revision; a project can take several months to be approved. Artists are asked to provide a list of materials and exact dimensions for review, and the public is given 15 days to comment before anything goes up at a site.

Some artists find it easier to get forgiveness than permission. Projects like Panhandle Slim’s Walls of Hope, which has placed more than two dozen hand-painted portraits bearing inspiring quotes around the city, would have taken literally years to get through all the red tape had it gone through official channels. Art Rise Savannah recently defied the powers-that-be by installing a portion of a mural on the plastic sheeting in front of the construction zone of the new Kessler hotel, a move Art Rise director Clinton Edminster says was necessitated by the project’s time-sensitive parameters. (Edminster assures that an HSMC application for the rest of the 80-foot design is in the works.)

For those looking to do things by the books (and ensure that the city’s sanitation crews don’t remove their work), patience is required.

“Like many things here, the pace was slower than I would prefer; however, at the end of the day we were able to accomplish the first phase of our goal,” says Charlie Crosby, owner of the Welmont Gallery on West 35th Street that commissioned artist

But Crosby also appreciates HSMC’s role in vetting projects for the community and plans to submit future proposals, adding, “It was a pleasant realization to find the board reviewing these projects to be largely progressive, and ultimately in support of public art.”

The minutes reflect that: The HSMC has approved 13 out of the 14 mural applications it has received since 2013, including two of Candy Chang’s “Before I Die” blackboards and the seminal “Muralcle at 34th Street,” a multi-layered collaboration

by Katherine Sandoz, Troy Wandzel and Adolfo Alvarado. (It has since been demolished to make way for the construction of a high-density apartment complex in 2014.)

The lone exception—a rendering of two kids on a bicycle by Hebermehl—was later authorized at a different location.

It’s a fine record that shows support for the cause. But many of the permits granted were temporary and have not added up to a wonderland of colorful walls. Plus, most of those 14 applications were submitted by the same handful of artists, and there are few proposals on the books for the future.

Why is that, in a city with such a tremendous pool of talent?

While other small Southern cities like Augusta and Greenville, SC are seeing a huge uptick in artistic participation in public projects, Savannah’s scene remains remarkably stagnant. Recognizing the desire for more public art and the lack of accompanying action, the six-person

commission has called for a review of the policy and “how to make the process more user-friendly, efficient and available.”

But the ensuing discussion revealed that the problem may not lay with the policy but the limited power of the commission.

About 20 people—an unusually larger crowd for these meetings—showed up for the occasion to offer insight on the topic.

HSMC chair Eli Karatassos told the room that any changes to the nascent policy would have to be considered carefully.

“We have to be cautious,” he warned.

“We don’t want anything to happen to the mural ordinance. We like it.”

Karatassos also reminded that while the commission must adhere to basic moral standards and regulations governing historic materials, it doesn’t dictate style and is not there to serve as a “public tastemaker.”

In other words, “We don’t have to like it to approve it.”

Newly-installed commission member Dolores Engle echoed that changes should not be made to the policy, opining drily, “I think most good art is offensive to somebody.”

But the “one-size-fits-all” set of regulations can be problematic, restricting artists to the same considerations in the historic district as the crumbling industrial buildings on the Westside.

AGRICULTURE in America has been through some major transitions since we have entered the 20th Century. We have moved through the Industrial Revolution and now the age of technology, with each leaving their impression on our agriculture.

The Industrial Revolution allowed farmers to spend less time and energy on their farms because of the transition from using animals to using machines like tractors.

This helped the entire industry to become more efficient ,which brought the overall cost of food down, and in turn allowed people to spend money on other things; which helped usher in the wave of technology.

While farming still plays a major role in the national economy from a broader aspect, it has diminished its role as a big contributor towards the GDP. In the same breath, the population of people living on farms as significantly decreased as we have very few counties that are considered “farming-dependent.”

Things are getting slightly better in a lot of those areas, so the future is not dreary, however we do have to get better at maintaining a level of awareness when it come where our food is actually coming from.

Some would say this recent resurgence of farmers has come from the now trending “farm to table” style of building a menu.

And that is exactly what they did.

No family background in agriculture, no prior knowledge on farming aside from the small scale gardening he had been doing his whole life.

“I just really loved gardening”, Travis said. “We started with a small piece of land, grew a ton of fall greens, and have been expanding and growing ever since.”

Travis handles all of the intensive physical labor that the farm demands, and Jenna handles the sales and marketing.

“I remember during that first harvest, asking Travis what he was going to do with all of those vegetables. We ended up packing as many boxes as we could, and sold them all to our friend and family,” Jenna said. “We’ve had a waiting list ever since.

In addition to living off of the land, The Back Forty Farm sells farm boxes filled with seasonal produce that is delivered weekly directly to your front door. Everything from squash, to okra and cherry tomatoes. Fat juice eggplants to sweet mouthwatering corn.

They are even working on an orchard that will be filled with mandarin oranges, kumquats, and other seasonal fruit.

“We have to be retrained on how to eat seasonally,” Jenna explained. “The hardest part is not eating things that are not in season like tomatoes, but once you have had them for a season when they are ripe, having them any other way doesn’t make sense.”

If we can continue to see the benefits of eating food the way it was intended, maybe we can start to slowly chip away at the big business model, and move into a new age of agriculture. We can start seeing the value in farming, and design our lives more around agriculture than we do around technology.

Agriculture has always been part of our foundation as Americans, and it is time that we start engaging with food the way we are supposed to. The Back Forty Farm is a great example of how we can support local farming, and continue to search for that middle ground when it comes to our food.

A single Conjuring just wasn’t enough, y’all had to have another?

/// When The Conjuring was released in the summer of 2013, I was one of those who rocked the status quo — that contingent being made up, of course, by those scores of critics and filmgoers who declared that Ohmygodthisisthescariestmovieevermade! — by giving the film a mixed, 2-1/2star review and writing, “I suppose it’s possible to be shaken to the core by this movie — even if it’s really not much more frightening than, say, The Flintstones Meet Rockula and Frankenstone or Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island — but ultimately, it’s just one more recycled haunted-house yarn, albeit one that’s modestly elevated by James Wan’s relatively restrained direction and a roster of characters who are more levelheaded than the usual gang of idiots who populate films of this nature.”

With an inexcusable 133-minute run time and a promise of more of the same, The Conjuring 2 wasn’t high on my screening priority list — and yet I dug it more than I did the original. Sure, sure, it’s impossible to believe that directorcowriter Wan and his team really mean for viewers to believe all this nonsense is based on fact, and, when all is said and done, it doesn’t deviate in any discernible ways from the usual haunted-house yarns (in fact, parts of this one smack so much of Poltergeist that we almost expect to learn that an Indian burial ground is somehow involved).

But it gets so much right that I’m willing to give it a generous thumbs-up in what’s proving to be a particularly dismal movie season (the films featuring the heroic

Avengers and the nice guys excepted).

For one thing, stars Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson make a far greater connection as the real-life wife-and-husband team of paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed Warren, here whisked off to England in 1977 to confirm the legitimacy of the haunting of a house occupied by single mom Peggy Hodgson (Frances O’Connor) and her four children. Farmiga and Wilson gave solid performances in the original, but they’re even better here, primarily because their characters’ love for, and devotion to, each other not only feels palpable but also plays directly into the narrative in interesting and surprising ways.

Another strength is the principal setting of a North London council house, a nice change from the Amityville Lite stateside houses usually seen in contemporary thrillers of this ilk. What’s more, Wan and production designer Julie Berghoff do a splendid job of capturing the dankness and decay of this sort of public housing prevalent at the time (and nice touch with the Starsky & Hutch posters in the two daughters’ shared bedroom).

As for the performers portraying the members of the tormented Hodgson family, it’s 13-year-old Madison Wolfe who makes the strongest impression while tackling the largest role. As Janet, the demure daughter who’s the most affected by the supernatural shenanigans, she’s excellent, often recalling the promise of the teenage Natalie Portman.

(I assumed Wolfe was a British newcomer; imagine my surprise when I learned I had already seen this American actress in several roles, including those

of Bryan Cranston’s oldest daughter in Trumbo and Woody Harrelson’s oldest daughter in True Detective.)

As in the first film, Wan does a fine job of establishing mood, which is good since the creatures are too derivative to manufacture much in the way of genuine terror. One demonic nun looks like a cross between Salem’s Lot’s vampiric Barlow and that crabby Mother Superior who used to rap your knuckles when you spoke up in class; another monster appears to be a hybrid of Jack Skellington and the Babadook; and an elderly apparition who’s usually found sitting in a comfy chair looks like Bruce Dern enjoying similar repose in The Hateful Eight (well, if you squint really hard, he does).

Honestly, the two scariest moments in this picture were doubtless unplanned.

The first is the wallpaper seen in the hallway of the Warrens’ home, the sort of beastly pattern beloved during the ‘70s.

The second fright is when a ghost switches a TV set from an episode of the popular BBC comedy The Goodies (not identified but instantly recognizable to those of us who enjoyed it in our youth abroad) to a speech being delivered by (shudder) Margaret Thatcher. As Colonel Kurtz might mutter, “The horror! The horror!”

Entertainment franchise will doubtless weep sweet-and-salty tears of joy that a motion picture is speaking directly to their console-controlled hearts, but most moviegoers will find it a chore sitting through expository sequences as graceless, clumsy and impenetrable as those on view here.

Yet after this trying and torturous opening, the story starts coming into view, and Warcraft soon emerges as — well, it’s still a feeble flick, but it improves enough to avoid the year-end 10 Worst placement that initially appeared to be its birthright.

With its mix of humans, orcs, dwarfs and even a Golem, one would be forgiven for mistaking this movie for The Lord of the Rings: The Bootleg Edition. The plot involves the skirmish between humans, whose ranks include scruffy soldier Anduin Lothar (Travis Fimmel), young wizard Khadgar (Ben Schnetzer) and veteran sorcerer Medivh (a badly miscast Ben Foster), and the hulking orcs, who seem like they might be decent chaps were they not imbecilic enough to serve under the transparently evil Gul’dan (Daniel Wu).

There’s also the half-orc Garona (Paula Patton), who inexplicably falls for the lackluster Lothar, as well as some imposing wolves apparently borrowed from Princess Mononoke.

Duncan Jones, son of the late, great David Bowie and helmer of the excellent Moon (as well as the flawed if intriguing Source Code), fares better as director than co-writer, since the battle sequences are far more accomplished than any of the scenes in which characters stand around spouting inanities.

Even when at the mercy of shaky CGI, the skirmishes are competently choreographed and suggest that Jones might have been able to make the leap from low-key sci-fi to big-budget extravaganzas had the material been stronger.

The film also boasts a tremendous score

by Game of Thrones composer Ramin Djawadi, suitably bombastic music that works overtime in trying to lend majesty and import to what’s occurring on the screen. Alas, it’s a losing battle.

POPSTAR: NEVER STOP NEVER STOPPING

// When setting one’s sights on a large and easy target that lends itself to ridicule, the satire has to be particularly sharp and the commentary especially astute; otherwise, it’s all too unchallenging, all too facile, and all too forgettable. The mockumentary Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping immediately falls victim to the obviousness and thereafter only works in small bursts of wit and wisdom.

The three play the members of Style Boyz, a promising boy band that almost immediately gets derailed due to internal squabbles. As for the other Style Boyz, Owen (Taccone) becomes Conner’s underutilized concert DJ while Lawrence (Schaffer) opts to quit show business altogether and try his hand at farming.

Coming off a smash debut album, Conner expects equally great things from his sophomore effort; alas, it proves to be a critical and commercial bomb, and every p.r. stunt he performs in an effort to boost sales backfires spectacularly.

There are a few modest chuckles sprinkled throughout Popstar, but few have sticking power, and certainly nothing compares to the knowing laughs offered in Christopher Guest’s string of celebrated mockumentaries. The failure of Conner’s second album sets up some amusing vignettes, although, truthfully, the comparable segments in Get Him to the Greek, when Russell Brand’s rocker character Aldous Snow gets lambasted following the disastrous release of his album African Child, are far more amusing than anything in the entirety of this film.

Samberg, Taccone and Schaffer are all earnest if not especially funny, but Tim Meadows has some nice moments as the lads’ manager. The cameo appearances by celebrities playing themselves arrive at a furious clip — yes, it’s time to cue the snoozy likes of Simon Cowell and Jimmy Fallon, although Snoop Dogg and Seal offer some fleeting amusement.

Some susceptible scribes have already been describing Popstar as “the new This is Spinal Tap,” I suppose in an effort to raise the likelihood of having a quote on the eventual DVD and Blu-ray cases. Don’t believe it for one second. Spinal Tap was able to turn the knob up to 11 — with Popstar, 4 on the dial is the best one can reasonably expect.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: OUT OF THE SHADOWS / It is what it is.

THE LOBSTER

// Lately, it seems to always come back to John Malkovich.

Art-house entries are expected to frequently provide the sorts of unique themes, uncompromising attitudes and go-for-broke sensibilities not generally found in multiplex fodder. But the commitment is as import as the conceptualization, which is why, for all their triumphs, current titles like A Bigger Splash and

now The Lobster ultimately come up a tad short. They’re a far cry from the likes of Being John Malkovich, which still ranks as one of the most ingenious and untainted movies of the modern era.

Director Spike Jonze and scripter Charlie Kaufman created a work that remained blazingly original from first frame to last – if the picture were made today by other hands, the innovation would eventually give way to a predictable wrap-up which, say, revealed that it was all a dream.

The Lobster doesn’t go that far — it actually gains back some of its mojo in time for a startling denouement — but the loopy beauty of the first half does eventually go MIA. It’s set in a future world where everyone is expected to have a companion, and being alone is strictly verboten. All the lonely people are sent to a special hotel where they have 45 days to find a partner; if they don’t, they will be turned into the animal of their choice.

While most people predictably opt to be turned into a dog, David (Colin Farrell) decides he wants to become a lobster. But he has 45 days to avoid such a fate.

Writer-director Yorgos Lanthimos (coscripting with Efthymis Filippou) has come up with a brilliant hook for a film, and at least for the first hour, he follows through with a suitably bizarre yarn that offers not only unique narrative thrills but also serves as a commentary on the manner in which society favors and coddles couples while often giving short shrift to the single folks out there.

But once David is forced to leave the hotel and hide out in the woods, the film loses its flavor. David hooks up with a rebel outfit made up of people who embrace their single status, but this section is rote and repetitive — strip away the surprisingly few idiosyncrasies in these segments and we might as well be watching a World War II tale in which Jewish or French resistance fighters are hiding out from the Nazis (indeed, I was reminded of 2008’s Defiance, a WWII film with Daniel Craig, the husband of The Lobster co-star Rachel Weisz).

The flatness dominating the second half is averted during the final moments, and that’s appreciated. Still, the defining sensation is that of watching your favorite football team run up the score on an inferior opponent and then letting it slip away during the second half, requiring a field goal in the closing seconds to escape with the victory. It’s one for the win column, but it never should have gotten so close.

ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS

/ The Walrus and the Carpenter are nowhere to be found in Alice Through the Looking Glass, meaning audiences will have to make do with the addition of

Marty McFly and Captain Jack Sparrow.

Those popular celluloid characters are present in spirit (if not body) in this followup to 2010’s phenomenally successful Alice in Wonderland, with Linda Woolverton again taking on mangling — I mean, screenwriting — duties but Tim Burton stepping aside as director for Flight of the Conchords’ James Bobin (Burton retains producer credit).

The title suggests that this is an adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking-Glass, the author’s sequel to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, but don’t you believe it — Bobin, Woolverton and company have as much use for Carroll’s wondrous text as a white rabbit does for a Wall Street Journal subscription.

The profiteers behind this picture couldn’t care less, preferring instead to lazily trigger memories of past hits rather than offer anything that might challenge or ruffle audiences.

So why not make the central storyline a twist on Back to the Future (particularly Part II), with Alice (Mia Wasikowska) called upon to traverse the years in a time machine in an effort to save her own eccentric Doc Brown, the perpetually annoying Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp in his now-standard jack-in-the-box mode)?

If the previous movie gave us a few pages of needless backstory, then this one offers a War and Peace-sized volume of nonsense.

It turns out that The Hatter (not named by Carroll but here called Tarrant Hightopp) suffers from even more daddy issues than George W. Bush, while the White Queen (Anne Hathaway) harbors a terrible secret.

Even Alice, a curious child in the books but now a colorless adult, has to deal with the daunting legacy of her late father and the crippling interference of her wellmeaning mother (Lindsay Duncan). It’s all so … 2016.

As the Red Queen, Helena Bonham Carter easily gave the best performance in Alice in Wonderland, and she’s effective here as well. Also back is Alan Rickman, briefly lending his vocals to the CGI-birthed Caterpillar. This marks the late actor’s final screen performance, a depressing thought considering his otherwise vibrant resume.

And as the physical manifestation of Time itself, a jumpy Sacha Baron Cohen joins the cast and delivers a take-it-orleave-it performance that will delight some and bore others. Since I’m given the choice, I’m gonna leave it.

Still, Cohen does turn up in one of the film’s few delightful scenes, a tea party in which Time punishes the attendants for their rudeness with a unique torture. Why does this scene work?

Could it be because it drew its inspiration from Carroll’s actual source material?

And just think, there was plenty more where that came from!

X-MEN: APOCALYPSE

// If anything, X-Men: Apocalypse reminded me of those loooong-ago teen years when I not only read comic books but subscribed to a trio of team titles. The best issues were always the ones which found the superheroes showcasing their distinct personalities and working through their personal problems; the weakest were the ones where the good guys spent the entire story pummeling some generic megalomaniac-of-the-month.

More than any other picture in the X-series, Apocalypse skews toward the latter sort of tale, with too much emphasis spent on the dullest villain yet seen in this mutant-populated universe. That’s not to say there isn’t still plenty to enjoy in this outing, but the overriding sense is one of missed opportunities.

The evildoer in this case is En Sabah Nur (Oscar Isaac), a mutant who made his presence known in Ancient Egypt but who has since been laying dormant over the millennia. Awakened in the 1980s, he watches some TV, realizes humankind is a lost cause (presumably, he caught episodes of The Dukes of Hazzard and Joanie Loves Chachi to help him come to this conclusion), and decides to destroy the world in order to rebuild it.

Aiding him are Magneto (Michael Fassbender), who just suffered a personal tragedy at the hands of yahoos, and various teenage mutants; standing against him are Professor Xavier (James McAvoy), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Beast (Nicholas Hoult) and more teenage mutants.

As always, individual scenes offer some familiar faces (you-know-who turns up as a Weapon X of mass destruction) as well as some unexpected ones (The Breakfast Club represented!). And as in Days of Future Past, there’s some scene-stealing being perpetrated by Evan Peters as Quicksilver — director Bryan Singer returns to the same slo-mo well, but it still yields multiple chuckles. Singer and his three coscripters also do a fine job of introducing Teen Beat versions of iconic X-characters like Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Storm (Alexandra Shipp) and Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee).

But all engaging activity comes to an abrupt halt whenever En Sabah Nur (aka Apocalypse) takes center stage. Isaac is an excellent actor, but he can do little with a part as parched as this one. Glowering under buckets of gloppy blue makeup, Isaac doesn’t seem to be playing a godlike figure capable of destroying the world as much as the sort of grumpy uncle who always complains at barbecues that there’s not enough mayonnaise in the cole slaw.

Even more surprising than Isaac’s impotence in this role is Singer’s inability to make the action set-pieces as kinetic

and kicky as the ones he orchestrated in past installments. Like much else in this overreaching underachiever, these scenes deliver the goods only in fits and starts, resulting in a movie where the excitement doesn’t build as much as it ebbs and flows.

THE NICE GUYS

/// The original Lethal Weapon back in 1987 has been given too much credit as the movie that birthed the “buddy action comedy,” but it was the most successful in that it led to three sequels even more lucrative.

After a dalliance with Marvel, scriptor Shane Black returns to his milieu with The Nice Guys, a witty romp starring the unlikely team of Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling.

The Crowe-Gosling pairing might stir unhappy memories of such past whatwere-they-thinking? twofers as Pat Morita and Jay Leno (Collision Course), Ted Danson and Howie Mandel (A Fine Mess) or Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds (R.I.P.D.), but the truth is that they turn out to be a dynamic duo, going together as well as peanut butter and chocolate.

Their characters, the bearish Jackson Healy (Crowe) and the bumbling Holland March (Gosling), are private dicks who pool their hot-and-cold talents to track down a missing woman named Amelia (Margaret Qualley) while subsequently investigating the murder of porn star Misty Mountains (Murielle Telio).

Like practically all of Black’s scripts, the one for The Nice Guys is cold and steely to the touch, with little warmth or sympathy to be found anywhere. And while his convoluted plot aspires to stir memories of the likes of Chinatown and L.A. Confidential (the latter starring two of this film’s players, Crowe and Kim Basinger), it’s really not much more polished than any given episode of Magnum, P.I. The film does have a secret weapon in newcomer Angourie Rice, cast as March’s brainy daughter Holly. This 15-year-old Australian actress is terrific in a key role — she’s as integral to the action as the two stars — and comparisons to the teenage Reese Witherspoon are not inappropriate.

Whether she ends up enjoying a similarly vibrant career remains to be seen, but she’s off to a terrific start. CS

The City of Savannah’s Weave-A-Dream (WAD) Panel has issued a call for proposals for the 2016 Weave-A-Dream Cultural & Arts Projects initiative. Applications will be accepted through the calendar year, while funds are available. Programs are to be completed prior to December 31, 2016. The application must be submitted at least eight weeks prior to the start date of the project; the last date an application can be submitted is October 21, 2016.

Project funding is available up to $2,000 for specific and innovative arts, cultural, or heritage projects or presentations that have a measurable, quantifiable benefit to Savannah’s diverse populations. The Weave-A-Dream Panel seeks proposals that actively involve youth, seniors, and those who have limited access to arts based programs in Savannah.
