WITH SCHOOL back in session (earlier and earlier every year!) and candidate filing deadlines fast approaching, it seems appropriate to turn once again to the looming City of Savannah elections happening this November.

The list of challengers was slow to build at first—worryingly slow, to be frank—but more names are being added each week. It looks like a number of seats will be competitive after all.

The rest will be up to the voters.

With the political season approaching in earnest, we’ll soon begin a series of extended interviews with some of those brave candidates who are challenging incumbent leadership on City Council.

Until then, let’s focus on some of the issues.

It’s funny: As much complaining as I and others have done about City government, when I stopped to think about it the other day I realized I didn’t have quick one-ortwo sentence summary on the tip of my tongue of what’s wrong and what needs to be done to fix it.

You can lose sight of the forest for the trees, and occasionally we get so bogged down in the ugly details of local news stories that we miss the larger point.

So with that in mind, I’d like to solicit your quick summary, your elevator pitch, your hot take, as to what’s wrong in the City of Savannah and what needs to be done about it.

Can you do it?

Can you come up with one or two sentences, maybe 100 words or so, or less, that sum up our problem and a way out?

In the meantime, here’s a laundry list of issues and controversies that happened on the watch of the current incumbents that pop into my mind when I think of what’s gone sideways in Savannah: • Out of control gun violence • 26 percent poverty rate unchanged • Hiring of now-imprisoned former Police Chief Willie Lovett • Hiring of disastrous former City Manager Rochelle Small-Toney (Mayor Jackson was then an Alderwoman) • Slow pace of fully staffing police dept.

• Arrogant, unreasonable overreach in police merger re-negotiation • Enormous cost overruns/delays and highly questionable bidding process for new Cultural Arts Center • Questionable process and expense of destroying historic African American residences for new Central Precinct • Questionable process and expense of purchase and redevelopment of Waters Avenue corridor parcel • Millions spent on outside consultants • $12,000 per month off-the-books payments to assistant city attorney to “oversee” Batson-Cook appeal • Favoritism toward large developers in violating design/building guidelines • Abuse of noise ordinances against long-established entertainment establishments • More emphasis on low-wage tourism industry than manufacturing/tech sector, i.e. all the big companies pick Charleston instead of Savannah • Unregulated proliferation of walking tours and tourism-oriented vehicles contributing to downtown congestion • No clear policy on short-term rental, i.e. Airbnb and VRBO • Cronyism in City departments • Mismanagement of appeal in Shanta Greene/tree injury case

• Slashed funding for tree planting/preservation, i.e. no replacement for dying/ cut tree canopy • Potentially wrong kind of upgrades to Grayson Stadium, thus incentivizing Sand Gnats to leave town • Continual unaddressed issues at Savannah Civic Center • Lack of confidence, lack of vision in future Westside Arena plan • Still no online payment options for water/sewer/trash bills • No action on firefighter’s contract after years of neglect • General sense of arrogant entitlement And perhaps most key element of all: • Astoundingly poor chemistry on the current City Council, i.e., they just can’t seem to work together.

This list is purely off the top of my head and I’m sure you’ll have no problem adding one or two or a dozen items of your own.

It obviously doesn’t include the many ongoing issues involving local public schools, local courts, the local sheriff’s department, and anything not expressly involving City government.

Open letter to Jolene Byrne and the School Board

President Byrne and the Savannah/Chatham County School Board, I am writing to you about the recent news articles surrounding the issue of bus safety in this county.

Last year I put my oldest child going to school for the first time as a kindergartner on a bus almost every school day to ride out to Tybee Island to attend the Maritime Academy.

Although I was nervous about this option, I felt that the school was the best choice for my child, and the bus the most economical and efficient way for him to get to school and back home.

I sit here distraught and furious to think that I was putting my child at risk by sending him to school on the bus.

If there is any truth to the articles published in Connect Savannah and the Savannah Business Journal, every single person that was aware of the

report and continued to put 22,000 students at risk every single day should not be working for the schools any more.

PERIOD. Our children’s safety is the top priority for every single employee of the Savannah Chatham County Public School System.

If you allow the top administration to so casually disregard safety, every single child in the schools will be at risk.

I believe in quality education for all children, but children will not learn if they are in danger.

Please protect our children by removing anyone who does not see their safety as the utmost priority of our schools.

Please advise on what steps the board will be taking to address and correct this very serious matter.

IT’S NOT NEWS that beloved local musician and artist Keith Kozel has been suffering from a rare kidney malady. His family, friends, and fans have been dealing with that fact for years now, and have helped out whenever they could.

But that’s exactly why the people who care most about him are putting on a charity event this weekend: To make sure people don’t forget. And don’t stop helping.

This year’s fundraiser to help Kozel pay his medical bills is a unique triple bill of “grindhouse” style B-movies, put on by his buddy Jim Reed, fellow musician and head of the Psychotronic Film Society.

“I’ve known Keith since a few weeks after I turned 17,” says Reed. “I met him the first or second day I arrived in Savannah, and we immediately became close.

Our friendship and creative collaborations over the past three decades have provided me with some of the most memorable and happy moments—and some of the most lasting artistic achievements—of my life.”

A little over a year ago, when Keith’s health began to deteriorate faster than expected, it became obvious that a lot of money would have to be raised to help pay for doctor visits, dialysis treatments and, ideally, a life-saving kidney transplant.

“My health has continued to decline, though I feel a good bit better because I am

on dialysis,” Kozel tells Connect.

“My dialysis treatments leave me tired for about six hours and they take four hours, three days a week,” he says.

Kozel cites his wife Carrie and daughter Zelia as “my greatest strengths and inspirations. We have a few people who babysit for us during my treatments and that’s a huge help. Jim has been on Team Kozel putting in tons of work, my friends are all very supportive, and our families have

been very much at our aid.”

Team Kozel has come up “with all sorts of ideas on unusual ways to try and generate donations from friends, acquaintances and even complete strangers,” Reed says.

Some of these ideas were Reed’s, some were Kozel’s, and some were hatched collaboratively. Last fall came a screening of Tim Burton’s Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure at the Lucas.

“That drew over 400 people, made a lot of folks happy, and raised a nice bit of money for Keith,” says Reed. “But Keith and I also wanted to come up with some smaller fundraisers that would be more niche-oriented.”

That’s where the Sleaze-O-Rama! triplefeature comes in. Reed says the initial idea was Kozel’s, as far back as last summer.

“I’m a huge fan of this genre of film. especially psychedelic biker flicks,” Kozel tells us.

“I’m consistently entertained by their over-the-top storytelling and politically incorrect subject matter. It’s pure escapism and the dangerous rock ‘n’ roll vibe translated into film. They are so dear to my heart that I wanted to team up with the Psychotronic Film Society and show some real freaky films.”

Reed agrees: “Keith and I are both diehard fans of the delightfully seedy exploitation film genre of the ‘60s through the ‘80s, which includes all sorts of disparate sub-categories—like violent revenge flicks, womenin-prison movies, juvenile delinquent dramas, raunchy sex comedies and socalled blaxploitation films,” Reed explains —the latter referencing low-budget action movies with majority black casts made specifically to play to black audiences at inner-city theaters.

“Keith felt it would be a novelty to show those kinds of films on the big screen—as most folks have never seen these sorts of movies at all, and those who have usually

found them on VHS or DVD, and watched them at home on a TV,” Reed says.

“None of the movies we’re showing on Saturday were ever meant to be seen on television, or for that matter, on a computer screen. Back when they were produced, there was no cable TV or even VCRs, let alone the internet. Their directors would likely not have conceived of a world where such raunchy, politically incorrect subject matter would ever be seen outside of the confines of a dark, rundown cinema or drive-in movie theater.”

Reed and Kozel hope this all-day triple feature will act as a sort of “time machine” for folks in attendance. “The idea is to come as close as possible to recreating the feel of going to see these movies back in the day at a dirty, run-down grindhouse cinema in a bad part of town,” Reed says.

“There’s no other space in the city that would even remotely make sense for a quirky cinema event of this kind. So, in all honesty, this would simply not be happening without Muse’s generosity and goodwill.”

As an added attraction, Reed says, “we’ll also include a bunch of rare coming attractions for other sleazy gems before each film, and local record-collecting DJs will spin sets of vintage psychedelic soul and garage music in between shows to keep the mood going.”

“I now have a few thousand features and trailers in the archive, many of which are either long out-of-print, or have never been commercially released in the USA,” Reed says.

“Most of these titles have been acquired over time from other private collectors around the world—many of whom actually search out and buy old 16mm and 35mm film prints of rare and/or forgotten movies and then preserve these fragile reels by transferring them onto digital formats.”

For Sleaze-O-Rama!, Reed says he’s going through his vaults and browsing through hundreds of super-rare trailers to find some that might actually have been shown onscreen before each of these three features back in their original theatrical release.

For those not familiar with the genre, “Grindhouse films were made on a

shoestring budget by people who either didn’t care that the films looked cheap, or who tried to squeeze every last penny as far as they could to overcome budgetary limitations. Often, all that mattered was getting a complete take that was fairly in focus,” Reed says.

“So, you either wind up with awkwardly charming time capsules of a particular time and place in society, or surprisingly charming examples of reckless and inventive filmmaking. Either one is a winner in my book,” he says.

The important thing to remember when watching grindhouse films is that virtually

every one was largely seen as disposable by the people who made them.

“It was simply assumed that they’d have a limited run of a few months to a couple of years in scuzzy cinemas or drive-ins, and then vanish forever,” Reed says.

The notion that almost 40 years after The Guy From Harlem was first released “there would be somebody like myself waxing rhapsodic in a newspaper interview about how wonderfully enjoyable a film it is and how proud they are to show it at a kidney transplant fundraiser is, on its face, slightly ludicrous,” Reed says.

“I’m sure it would be quite unimaginable to the film’s director.”

Some of the films advertised on the trailers are even more obscure than the ones Reed is showing that day.

“In some cases, the films in these trailers have actually become lost forever, as their negatives and/or film prints have either deteriorated or been destroyed by folks who mistakenly thought they had little or no value. Ironically, all that remains of some of these bizarre movies are the trailers designed to promote them! To me, that’s very sad.”

Kozel, of course, has been a key component in the growth of Savannah’s music scene, as vocalist in the glam/punk/show band GAM and guitarist and vocalist in sludge/stoner rockers Superhorse.

While his health keeps him from being as active as he used to be, Kozel still keeps a close eye on what’s happening on local stages.

“There are a ton of great bands in Savannah right now. I hope we continue on that course,” Kozel says.

Is medical error the third leading cause of death in America?

I heard from one of the local ambulance chasers that medical malpractice is the third leading cause of death. Can that many deaths be blamed on doctors and hospitals?

My hunch is someone pulled the number in question completely out of their ass. —John HANG ON. Before we peer into where this idea got pulled out of (and get sued for an unnecessary colonoscopy in the process), let’s get our terms straight. Medical malpractice isn’t what kills you, it’s what your survivors accuse the doctor of when they’re trying to collect damages.

Only about 11,000 such claims are paid out in the U.S. each year, they’re costly to pursue and hard to prove, and nearly 60 percent of total compensation goes to “administrative fees” (read: lawyers), so malpractice suits aren’t even a leading getrich scheme.

No, the thing you’ll see cited among the top causes of death is medical errors, also known in the literature as “preventable adverse events”: when medical personnel do the wrong thing, or fail to do the right thing, or do the right thing but do it wrong.

This can often take the form of misdiagnosis, or miscommunication between various healthcare providers, or between providers and patient.

And it does happen with some regularity, and patients do die. How many,

though? The report that really wound everyone up on this issue was released in 1999 by the Institute of Medicine, titled To Err Is Human. It relied in part on a study of 30,000 records from New York hospitals in 1984, which researchers used to calculate the rate of adverse events per hospitalization (3.7 percent), how many were due to negligence (27.6 percent), and how many led to death (13.6 percent), and then weighted the numbers to estimate figures for the state overall.

What the IOM authors did was to extrapolate these results to the total number of U.S. hospital admissions in 1997, 33.6 million, arriving at a high-end figure of 98,000 deaths and thus enabling the claim that medical error was the fifth leading cause of death for that year. In 2013, a NASA toxicologist turned patients’-rights crusader presented a new report based on more recent hospital data and came up with an even scarier estimate: 400,000plus deaths due to preventable harm—good for a theoretical third place on the causesof-death list, right behind cancer.

But even if the raw numbers behind the reports were absolutely correct, assigning all these deaths to medical error doesn’t really make sense. As critics of the 1999 report pointed out, that 13.6 percent of patients who died in the New York study all had life-threatening conditions in the first place, but the authors never establish a baseline rate for how many would have died anyway; they concede that had the adverse events not occurred, the life expectancy for many terminally ill patients wouldn’t have been improved, but don’t work this into their death figures.

Both the 1999 and 2013 reports get some of their data from tertiary hospitals—i.e., where people wind up when their problems are so complicated they’ve already seen two other doctors. Both also analyze a significant number of Medicaid patients, who tend to have a notably high rate of comorbidity (simultaneous multiple ongoing health troubles)—making their risk of death within a month of hospital admittance 40 percent greater than the general

population’s. A medical error is still a medical error, but these higher baseline death risks have to be accounted for before drawing major conclusions about causality.

Beyond that, given the byzantine nature of U.S. healthcare logistics and the constant implementation of new technologies, errors may just be part of the game. The theory of “normal accidents”—introduced

by Charles Perrow in 1984 and applied to disasters like the meltdown at Three Mile Island and later the Challenger crash— describes serious accidents that occur in complex, high-risk systems as being a result of “multiple failures that are not in a direct operational sequence.”

Basically, the idea is that as small errors occur independently in different areas of the system, they’ll ultimately interact with each other in ways that are more or less impossible to prevent or respond to appropriately. It’s unfortunate, and particularly in the case of medical care often tragic, but that’s the reality when the process is complicated and the stakes are high.

Obviously hospitals still need to minimize mistakes, and evidence suggests a little prevention can go a long way. Two years ago a Milwaukee hospital modified their ID wristbands for not-yet-named newborns to include the mother’s first name as a secondary identifier—rather than “Babygirl Smith” (as it would appear in most of the country’s neonatal ICUs) a kid’s wristband might read “Sarahsgirl Smith.”

The apparent result: a reduction of 36 percent in wrong-patient orders.

Not all fixes are this simple, of course, and if nothing else both these reports effectively bring to light the dangers inherent in our healthcare system.

But that doesn’t mean we’re all doomed every time the steak knife slips and we have to go in for stitches—nor, unfortunately, can we count on that strategy to make our first million. cs

One dead, one injured on Eastside

Detectives “are seeking information on a shooting that injured one man and claimed the life of another early this morning,” a police spokesperson says.

The shooting occurred on the 3600 block of Duane Court about 12:38 a.m. Aug. 7. Victims, Lawrence Bryan, IV, 23, and Keron Brown, 22, were taken to Memorial University Medical Center for care. Bryan succumbed to his injuries. Brown was listed in serious but stable condition.

“The circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation,” police say. “Detectives ask to public to come forward with information or descriptions of potential suspects.”

Woman shot during Southside hotel robbery

Detectives are investigating a robbery and shooting in a hotel room on Savannah’s Southside early Saturday morning.

The shooting occurred at the Econolodge on the 7500 block of Abercorn Street at about 4:28 a.m. Jo Robinson, 22, of Florida “heard a knock on her hotel

room door. When she opened it, a male subject reportedly forced his way inside,” police say.

“The two engaged in a scuffle. Robinson was shot after pepper spraying the suspect, who grabbed her cellular phone before fleeing,” police say.

Investigators are working to determine whether Robinson and the shooter were previously acquainted on an internet site.

The suspect is described as a 23 to 24-year-old, light complexioned black male, standing about 5-6.

Three shootings within six hours

Police are investigating three weekend shootings in Savannah “that DO NOT appear to be connected,” police say.

At approximately 9:28 p.m. on Saturday investigators responded to Memorial University Medical Center. George Tuner, 55, has been shot and drove himself to the hospital. His injuries appear to be non-life-threatening.

At approximately 11:34 p.m. Saturday officers responded to the 1900 block of Utah St. and found Dominique Miller, 26, shot in the foot.

At approximately 3:02 a.m. Sunday police responded to another shooting in the 1100 block of Stiles Ave. Patrick Boles, 44, was found with a gunshot wound and

Pinkie’s bouncer arrested for stabbing

Police are investigating a cutting that occurred at Pinkie Masters on Drayton St. At approximately 1:49 a.m. on Sunday investigators responded to the bar and found Johnathan “Catfish” Staggs, 41, with a stab wound. Staggs refused medical treatment, police say.

Officers arrested Leonard Scriven, 50, a bouncer at the bar. Scriven is charged with Aggravated Assault.

Michael Thomas: arrested for stalking

Man found dead in islands pool

Police are investigating the death of a 22-year-old Savannah man found floating in a residential swimming pool on Talahi Island this afternoon.

At 12:57 p.m. SCMPD responded to the 200 block of East Point Drive. The homeowner called police after discovering his house sitter unresponsive in the pool.

The victim, identified as Cameron Havy, was last seen at the residence on Friday.

The homeowner gave the victim permission to use the pool.

Man arrested for stalking

Wednesday night, police arrested Michael Thomas, 38, on multiple charges including stalking. A detective saw Thomas in a white Dodge pick-up blocking another vehicle in a parking space outside of Southside Precinct on Abercorn.

The 70-year-old female driving the other vehicle said that “since that morning Thomas spent several hours cleaning his truck at a carwash near her residence,” police say. “While running errands later in the day, she observed Thomas following her in his truck to multiple destinations.

Breivik had been sentenced to 21 years in prison — the country’s maximum, or less than four months per victim — but he was subsequently turned down when he sought to register, behind bars, as a political science student at Oslo University.

However, in July, prison officials relented and will allow the enrollment — although he will still be subject to his prison restrictions against Internet and email use.

Omingnome

The members of Omingnome might have taken a bit of a breather from their relentless touring, but that doesn’t mean Savannah’s band of psychedelic songsters has slowed down. In fact, they’re a leading example of how to make the best use of downtime.

Case in point: their latest music video. When the band’s bus broke down during their winter tour, they didn’t pout around in the auto shop’s waiting room: instead, they grabbed a camera, headed to the Mojave Desert, and shot an enthralling video for their song “Beyond the Shadow of a Doubt,” released on July 23.

During that tour, Omingnome hooked up with Jackson, Mississippi band Fides for several dates; now, Fides heads to the Gnome home turf for a Barrelhouse South show.

Fides has coined their sound “post-dad rock”: it’s splashy, college-rock-tinged fun that fits nicely on the spectrum that begins with openers Carpet Coats and ends in the magic Omingnome has in store.

This isn’t simply an Omingnome show, see: this is the Leaping Gnome Experiment, featuring instrumental contributions from members of Savannah prog deity Culture Vulture, hip-hop from Miggs, Knife, and spoken word/hip-hop from Valore, an artist who just recently signed onto the Dope Sandwich roster (keep an eye out for an EP, Lizard Girl, coming soon). Omingnome hints that there may be even more guests, ranging from poets to performance artists to visual artists. Anything could happen with this kind of collaboration—best be there to witness it firsthand.

CHEW

CHEW, HOTPLATE, Carpet Coats @Hang Fire

CHEW, a hypnotically psychedelic trio of sonic experimentalists, is comprised of Brett Reagan on guitar and electronics, “Snare-uh” Wilson on drums, and Brandon Pittman on bass. While the Atlantans certainly aren’t strangers to their hometown scene as individual players (Pittman’s in Swank Sinatra, Wilson in DAMS, and Reagan formerly played in Lotus Quadrant), CHEW is something entirely new and different—fusing acid rock, experimental music, and hard-driving fuzz— and it’s ensnared audiences.

At its core, CHEW allows Reagan to experiment with older technology and vintage gear.

“I don’t ever want to perform with a laptop,” Reagan says resolutely.

“I’m not saying that great things can’t be accomplished with a computer on stage, because they can. For me, it’s about pushing things as far as I can with a limited amount of resources, while giving a nod to

those who utilized the equipment before me.”

Right now, his setup includes a Korg Monotribe, a small analog synthesizer based off of the 1978 Korg MS-20. In place of keys is a touch-sensitive ribbon. “It makes some really awesome and strange noises,” Reagan shares.

He also uses a Roland 404 sampler, run through a guitar amp to grit up the sheen. “Instead of playing a sample and having the band try to sync it, I’ll separate that sample into five or so pieces, or play along with the band,” Reagan explains of his sampler process.

It’s sure to be a captivating process to watch live.

HOTPLATE are the perfect local addition for genre-pushing jams, and if you haven’t seen Carpet Coats yet, you must be hiding indoors: the freak-folk trio’s been kicking off nearly every show as of late, and keep getting better and better.

It’s always fun to catch live music in the quintessentially Savannah setting of Johnny Harris Restaurant. This week, the Coastal Jazz Association continues its Sunday Evening concert series with a special performance by local saxophonist Jody Espina.

Espina has been a Lowcountry resident for seven years; after moving here to be closer to family, Espina has become a prominent and inspiring influence on the local music scene in more ways than one. While you can catch Espina gigging around town, saxophone and clarinet players may have discovered Espina’s other passion: JodyJazz Saxophone & Clarinet Mouthpieces (Espina has twelve employees at his Savannahbased factory/showroom).

A Berklee College of Music alum and former Director of the Jazz Department at the prestigious Hoff-Barthelson Music School, Espina has taught music in Barcelona, toured with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, and spent fifteen years performing, recording and teaching music. Espina’s skills have landed him on film soundtracks, in Broadway pit orchestras, and in inner-city schools with the Grammys in the Schools Program.

He’s performed alongside greats like Mel Tormé, Louis Bellson, and Eddie Arnold.

Brave Baby @Hang Fire Brave Baby’s back! Our Charleston neighbors have been heading to Savannah pretty regularly over the years, and their live show just keeps getting better and better.

They’re headed through town this go-round armed with a brand-new record, Electric Friends.

“Plastic Skateboard,” the first tease of the record, is fresh-faced indie-pop that’s just electro enough to make you dance and just grounded enough to make you sing along. It’s dreamy, uptempo, and summery at just the right time. There’s something wistfully nostalgic about their sound that evokes the heat off the sidewalk and that little bit of cool in the breeze after a summer of oppressive heat—you’re just not quite ready to let it slip away just yet. It’s also a great demonstration of the band’s ability to push and pull: unadorned, buoyant bass and a toe-tapping snare carry the verses until meeting the threshold of a full-brimmed chorus, spilling over into a searing guitar lead. Reduce to a simmer. Return to a rapid boil.

Electric Friends will be available August 14 on Charleston-based boutique label Hearts & Plugs Records—stream it, then snag a physical copy at the show. Wednesday, August 19, 9 p.m.

‘Bit of a nerd’ Raymond Gaddy presents mixed media drawings at Cultural Arts Gallery

RAYMOND GADDY is the first to acknowledge the precarious nature of truth.

“I don’t think there is any such thing as a purely truthful story,” Gaddy says.

“I think there is always a bias. We tend to exaggerate stories, particularly when we are telling them to our friends. They become tall tales.”

It’s such stories that visually play out in Gaddy’s work. A collection of his recent mixed-media drawings, “Tall Tales”, is currently on view at the Cultural Arts Gallery through August 28.

Gaddy’s interest in storytelling stems from diverse sources—his family, science fiction, Renaissance and Baroque paintings and medieval art, which he relates to other influences, like comic books.

“I enjoy looking at artists like Caravaggio, who was very much, in my opinion, a storyteller,” says Gaddy.

He tugs at these threads and intertwines them with his own experience and that of his extended family—friends, colleagues, students, and others with which he has formed lasting connections.

“They’re always my stories but my family, my friends and my kids’ friends, all those sorts of things, they are supporting 20 actors in the stories,” Gaddy says. “I pull

from everywhere. If it’s happened to me, it’s fodder for use.”

Gaddy’s works play with point of view; the images often appear to come from a child’s eyes. While the stories he tells are his, he is in some sense a mediator.

“I have two kids and I’m watching them grow up and living vicariously through them,” Gaddy says. “Right now is a good opportunity to re-tell and re-see things through their eyes.”

His own childhood growing up in a large tight-knit Alabama family, has always informed his work, and now these experiences merge with observations of his own children.

“I think about them a lot when I’m making work,” Gaddy says. “I’ve watched my work change as they’ve gotten older. So while my work always had that kind of childlike quality, I steal from them too.

Things have changed over—well, my son is 10—so over the last 10 years.”

Normally an oil painter, the new works are all on paper and utilize a quilting technique. This shift in materiality is a nod to his roots.

“It’s a bit of a departure for me, but the mediums are very important. The quilting part—a lot of my family members sewed.

I’m from an area near Gee’s Bend where the famous quilts were done, so I grew up looking at those things. But the paper certainly plays into the things too. My family was tree farmers. We grew trees in Alabama to make paper out of. So definitely medium was part of the message here,” Gaddy says.

In this exhibition, the work is nearly monochromatic—another departure for Gaddy, usually a color enthusiast. He employs his quilting technique to piece together bits of drawn imagery with colored thread— a drawing instrument in his mind.

The small drawings he patches together are minimal and simple, emphasizing form through stark line.

He depicts fish—a seeming homage to the classic tall tale—cars, moths and other emblems of Southern living.

Larger drawings, onto which he often stitches the quilted paper tapestries, are bold and dramatic, revealing his admiration of the Baroque through his use of light and darks.

These larger images evolve from smaller “stream of consciousness” pieces, which form intuitively from doodles and experimentations.

“I see two images that kind of work together and put them together. Then later on I’ll add something to that. So they can take months to do. Those pieces, they often get stories after the fact and lead to the bigger pieces,” Gaddy says.

His process is revealed in the exhibition through a sampling of the smaller experimental works and a handmade book of sketches.

The process-oriented pieces compliment the epic scale of the other drawings, where audiences are overcome by masterfully articulated scenes. An astronaut floats far above the viewer in one. In another, an isolated Death Star like planet hangs in expansive space.

“I am a bit of a nerd, so Star Wars and comic books pop up,” says Gaddy with a grin.

The large-scale drawings have a gestural quality in juxtaposition to the smaller bare-bones renderings, where he frequently repeats imagery.

“Repetition is a big aspect of my work.

Part of it is things like quilting—repetitive motion of the stitches. You’ll see that in a lot of the work. Counting things,” says Gaddy.

The repetition feeds the childlike perspective of the works, and calls to the evolution of the tall tale.

As stories are repeated they morph. The memory of telling the story often overpowers the initial memory. Repetition allows for great stories to flower, while also distancing it from original experience.

In “Tall Tales”, Gaddy embraces this human tendency and celebrates its place in personal historical tradition. cs

Salads here are beautifully presented, colorful and crisp, and salad-lovers will find the salty feta, crumbly bleu cheese and farmer cheeses only amplify the flavor. I especially like the cornbread croutons & muscadine grapes, as well as the baconsorghum vinaigrette, a pleasant nod to Southern cuisine.

The Hanger Steak, with its lightly charred outside, pinkly juicy interior and tasty red wine au jus is bound to be a big favorite here, and for those who feel more comfortable with the familiar, there is the Fried Chicken Thighs with mac ‘n’ cheese & coleslaw, or a bacon cheeseburger with caramelized onions. It’s ain’t all hightoned gourmet here!

A bank vault?

For those craving privacy there is a small room tucked away in the corner, housed in an actual bank vault kept over from a previous incarnation.

But for all others, you have your choice of a cool indoor seat, or brunch out on the covered porch or umbrellashaded patio tables. The gray slats on the porch keep the hot sun away but still permit the flow of summer breezes.

Owners Zach Shultz and his friends Brandon & Kimberly Whitehead have created an approachably stylish foodie haunt that has already began to top the lists of Savannah folk who want just the right place for a date, an inventive cocktail after work, friends pining for the perfect brunch, or families trying out their creative menu of Southern favorites with a twist.

I was on hand for opening night, and though the crowd got a little heavy and the noise level rose as the evening went on, Kimberly and her staff had everything well in hand and the ambience remained easy and light.

It helps if you have good bread. The eponymous fresh-baked-daily rye slices, wrapped cozily in a white cotton cloth will definitely help you while away your time between courses.

The menu is simple and each dish exudes a farm-to-table freshness that makes you want to order just one more dish. I highly recommend the Octopus fingerlings in sherry with tender asparagus spears & caramelized shallot—seriously delicious!

I like to bring along friends or family to sample a new place and get their reactions on the new flavors; this time Mama Bear and my sister Lori joined me.

Right off, Ma orders the Fried Shrimp.

I asked her, Why order something so ordinary? Her answer: Because, in a place like this, even the ordinary has to be special!

And, believe me, it is!

The order was halved so she and my sis could share, but with some of the BIGGEST shrimp I’ve ever seen, rolled in a crispy golden coating and partnered with large, fresh cut steak fries, it makes an ample meal for two!

We love the house-made lemon dill tartar sauce—and the shrimp are so good I even ate the nicely crunchy shrimp tails they put aside (dipped in that sauce, of course). Hey, don’t knock it til ya try it!

My Striped Bass was superbly tender, succulent & juicy on the inside, with a delightful, gently charred and slightly chewy crust, and lying atop a colorful succotash of corn, onions, smoky bacon and red bell peppers…. ah, well, it is a feast of both the eyes and the tastebuds!

The Cuban Sandwich here is the best I’ve had since Miami: the buttery crunch of the bread and the pile of smoky pork, the Taylor ham brought in special from New Jersey, and the almost tart Gruyere cheese makes a combination that is breathtaking.

Instead of the steak fries, which to me always seem a bit heavy even for brunch, I chose the Fresh Fruit bowl—the watermelon, fresh peaches and sliced strawberries have a lovely, bright flavor that suited me perfectly after the big Cuban!

You would think there’d be no room for dessert…wrong! I hear the special today: Challah Bread Pudding. Oh my, yes!

Where have all the cowboys gone?

Head West for revenge with Danish flick The Salvation by anna chandler

The Salvation whisks audiences away to the Wild West circa 1870, where many Danish soldiers traveled in search of a new life after the Second Schleswig War. When a peaceful settler’s family is murdered, he slays the killer, enraging a notorious gang leader.

Betrayed by his fellow settlers, it’s up to our hero to take down the bad guys singlehandedly.

An established master of psychological cinema, director Kristian Levring is sure to have crafted a fresh approach to the timeless genre.

“She’s engaging both dramatically and emotionally,” Warchol praises.

Mads Mikkelsen, one of Warchol’s favorite actors, leads a stellar cast—you may recognize him as the villain in Casino Royale or, most recently, as the “bitch” accountant in Rhianna’s polarizing “Bitch Better Have My Money” music video.

Warchol recommends Mikkelsen’s performances in After the Wedding, Open Heart, and 2012’s Oscar-nominated The Hunt to appreciate his range as an actor, and looks forward to seeing him in the rogue hero role of John Jensen.

Eva Green stars as the widowed sisterin-law of the evil gang leader; she’s a familiar face who co-starred with Mikkelsen in Casino Royale.

Warchol says the cinematography is sure to be a treat, as well, having been breathtakingly shot in South Africa.

“We’ll see if it plays with tradition and convention,” he says. “I’m interested in how it engages, or how it adapts, the Spaghetti Western.”

Thrill seekers, take heed: The Salvation is a ride of pure adrenaline, replete with action and edge-of-your-seat adventure.

“It should be straightforward entertainment,” says Warchol. “Not everything is going to be black and white, like in those old Westerns! But the emotions will be very powerful and dramatic.”

“The conflict will be very visceral,” he says. “I think that audiences will be immediately pulled in, and they’ll go and be taken for a ride that may bring them a little ease of some of their tensions or their own frustrations. I always feel like movies can kind of help us psychologically and emotionally.”

No need to wait for the dust to settle: it’s a movie marathon at Muse, with Sleaze-ORama following The Salvation on Saturday.

Everybody loves a cowboy.

There’s just something about the combination of Stetsons, spurs, and a steely demeanor that’s charmed film buffs and TV junkies around the world for decades.

“I love Westerns as an immigrant,” says Tomasz Warchol, founder of local film organization CinemaSavannah.

“To me, it’s a lot of American mythology; as a genre, it’s uniquely American. I have this nostalgic kind of attachment about it.”

Speaking as both a curator of interesting films and a huge fan of the genre, Warchol is excited to bring The Salvation, a 2014 Danish Western-Drama, to Savannah.

To Warchol, the allure of Westerns resides in the particular blend of minimalism laced with classic archetypes and elements of Greek tragedy.

“It reveals universal moral/ethical questions through a most fundamental conflict between good and evil, man and nature, individual and society, civilization and wilderness, all set against a historical background of the American West experience,” he admires. “To me, the ‘Western’ mythos, like no other convention, captures the essential archetypal human experience.”

“It’s very engaging ,and kind of cathartic,” he observes. “And I guess I just love that American frontier, that individualism.

I have all of those very elemental associations, very essential associations with the American psyche.”

While the Western certainly is a staple of American culture, the genre has been picked up internationally; there are Australian, Japanese, and Korean versions, “Curry Westerns” (Spaghetti Western through an Indian lens), and even “Meat pie Westerns,” which typically take place in the Australian Outback. “[The Salvation] is apparently a tribute to the kind of the very basic, very fundamental conventions of the Western.” says Warchol. “And it’s Danish!”

O The title “Fantastic Four” doesn’t actually appear on screen until the end of Fantastic Four, which makes me suspect it’s simply wishful thinking on the collective part of the suits at Fox. “The first three films were lame? Don’t worry, number four will be fantastic! We promise!”

Honestly, is there a more cursed franchise in Hollywood than this one? One of the genuinely classic comics from the storied history of Marvel, it’s mind-boggling that no one has been able to make a decent movie out of this material.

It brings to mind Jim Gordon’s line about Batman at the conclusion of The Dark Knight: “He’s the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now.”

Is the same principle applying here?

Are these the heroes America deserves, as punishment for our slavish devotion to all films Marvel? A grim—make that Grimm— assessment, indeed.

Another reboot, another disappointment. The Incredible Hulk was only slightly better than Hulk, while Mark Webb’s Spider-Hipster films couldn’t begin to compare to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man flicks (the first two, anyway).

So while it may be true that this Fantastic Four is an improvement over the 2005 version (and perhaps its 2007 sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer), that’s really not saying a damn thing.

Based on an updated take on the squad as opposed to the property first created

by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby back in 1961, this finds our fab four much younger than in previous incarnations—think along the lines of Muppet Babies and you’re halfway there.

There’s brainy Reed Richards (Miles Teller) and cocky Johnny Storm (Michael B. Jordan), and there’s Sue Storm (Kate Mara) and Ben Grimm (Jamie Bell).

Yes, the last-named characters are so devoid of personality or quirks that I’m hard-pressed to think of any adjectives to describe them. At any rate, after nearly an hour of sluggish exposition—while these types of films often don’t have enough exposition, this one has too much—the quartet finally are exposed to the mysterious green glop that looks as if it could power a thousand Green Lanterns but instead turns these meddling kids into something more than human.

Reed can stretch any part of his body to incredible lengths (something tells me a porn spoof is just around the corner), Johnny can burst into flame, Sue can turn invisible, and Ben has transformed into a walking, talking rock quarry.

And let’s not forget resident bad boy Victor Von Doom (Toby Kebbell), who got the brunt of the goop and now roams around as the misshapen, godlike Dr. Doom.

Here’s the thing about Doom: He just might be the best villain ever created at Marvel HQ (think of him as a formidable forerunner to Darth Vader). But in the earlier FF films, where he was limply played

by Julian McMahon, he was a pitiable baddie, reduced to the level of a wimpy Wall Street embezzler.

Kebbell brings a dash more menace to the role, but the design of the character is an eyesore: He looks like someone who’s been wrapped in aluminum foil and set to bake at 400 degrees for two hours.

More convincing are the effects used to create the heroes, with Johnny’s Human Torch particularly effective. In fact, the Torch gets the best deal all around, since

Jordan’s performance is arguably the best among the younger set.

In fact, none of these skilled actors are bad individually, but thanks to inert writing and direction, they’re never allowed to establish any chemistry among themselves. Especially affected are Reed and Ben, who are supposed to be longtime friends but seem about as comfortable around each other as two strangers mashed together on a crammed NYC subway car.

There’s a climactic battle, of course, but it’s rather anemic, generating about as much suspense as found on any given episode of Fraggle Rock. And then it’s all over, leaving in its wake disappointment, disillusionment, and the threat of a sequel in 2017.

RICKI AND THE FLASH

OOO Meryl Streep sprints past the ABBA songbook to tackle a wide range of infectious tunes in Ricki and the Flash, a middling seriocomedy that works better when its emotions are raw than when its scenarios are rigged.

Streep plays Ricki Rendazzo, who abandoned her prim and proper family long ago to pursue her rock ‘n’ roll dream. Singing a mix of covers (Tom Petty’s “American Girl” and Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance,” for starters) at a California watering hole with her band the Flash (members played by real-life rockers Rick Springfield, Bernie Worrell, Joe Vitale and the late Rick Rosas), she’s beckoned back to Indianapolis by her ex-husband Pete (Kevin Kline), who’s worried about their daughter

And adding to the tension is the presence of Pete’s second wife Maureen (Audra McDonald), who’s spent years raising these kids as her own and isn’t sure Ricki’s presence can offer anything but trouble.

Featuring a script by Oscar winner Diablo Cody (Juno) and direction by Oscar winner Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs), Ricki and the Flash mines the various confrontations in a manner that causes a level of discomfort among both the characters and the audience members.

These standoffs bring out the best in Streep, who hadn’t delivered an interesting performance since 2009’s Julie & Julia, and represent many of the most memorable sequences in the film.

But the script too often works overtime to provide uplifting, cathartic moments that feel artificial rather than earned, and all conflicts are eventually ignored instead of being resolved. Much is made of the fact that Ricki is a right-wing nitwit (we learn that she voted for George W. Bush twice because “I support the troops!”) while other family members hit all the stereotypical liberal checkpoints (this one’s gay, this one’s a vegan, and so on), but the film refuses to dig any further. At least one family member seems to genuinely hate her, but that, too, gets swept under the rug.

Like Demme’s Rachel Getting Married, Ricki and the Flash also ends at a wedding.

Yet unlike that 2008 sleeper about an equally dysfunctional family, any goodwill here feels more like the screenwriter’s forced hand than the characters’ hardearned victories.

Allen’s Irrational Man rarely feels like anything more than a college-level term project – perhaps appropriately, given its scholastic setting.

Joaquin Phoenix plays Abe Lucas, a professor who derives absolutely no pleasure out of life. Yet despite his morose attitude and sizable pot belly, he proves to be Irresistible Man to the ladies, since Allen films generally maintain that all women will perennially be attracted to a massive, throbbing…brain.

In Abe’s case, he manages to attract both a faculty member—the unhappily married Rita (Parker Posey), whose husband rates about as much screen time as Third Roman Soldier From The Left in Ben-Hur —and a student—Jill (Emma Stone), who has a boyfriend (Jamie Blackley) but prefers spending time with her angst-ridden instructor.

Irrational Man becomes a one-sided conversation because Abe is the only one offered any complexity (and Phoenix is quite good in the role). Jill and Rita function as nothing more than soundboards, with the actresses’ committed performances no match for the thinness of the parts.

As recently as 2013, Allen has shown that he’s still capable of writing wonderful female characters (see: Blue Jasmine; Cate Blanchett; Best Actress Oscar), so it’s disheartening to see Stone and Posey reduced to playing women so ill-defined.

Even with dialogue that’s often clunky, some moviegoers will want to see this just to watch adults engage in conversations concerning the likes of Dostoevsky, Heidegger and Kant—it’s the sort of chat one won’t find in something like Pixels, for example.

It’s just too bad the film represents one of Allen’s lesser efforts as a ventriloquist.

We see the performers’ mouths moving, but all we hear is Allen venting from atop the stool.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – ROGUE NATION

OOO Mad Max can breathe easy, as his jaunt down Fury Road still stands as the best action that money can buy this summer.

But for a good while, Mission: Impossible— Rogue Nation looked like it might just usurp that title.

To be honest, Rogue Nation ultimately isn’t even the best of the five M:I films to date, as it fails to match the stylized sleekness of I, the character dynamics of III or the needle-to-the-heart adrenaline charge of IV (aka Ghost Protocol).

But for a franchise that began nearly two decades ago (and was a hit TV show before

that), here’s one that somehow manages to retain its freshness. Only the daft II was a dud; otherwise, this series continues to satisfy at a fast and furious clip.

The Avengers, the Barden Bellas and the Kings of Tampa aren’t the only outfits having trouble keeping it together this summer—in the case of the Impossible Mission Force, it’s being disbanded at the behest of CIA director Alan Hunley (Alec Baldwin).

More’s the pity, since IMF agent extraordinaire Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) needs all available resources to help him track down Solomon Lane (Sean Harris), a particularly nasty character who heads a terrorist outfit known as The Syndicate.

But since Hunley views Ethan as a maverick (no Top Gun cross-reference intended) whose methods are too reckless, he not only won’t help him but actively seeks to have him arrested. As for the other IMF agents, Brandt (Jeremy Renner) has been turned into a neutered office lackey, Benji (Simon Pegg) has been locked down behind a computer monitor, and Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) has seemingly gone back into retirement.

Clearly, these troops will need to be rallied in order to confront the global threat looming before them. Ethan can count on Benji and Luther, but Brandt? Even more of a question mark is Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), an international woman of mystery who might be a Syndicate assassin, a British intelligence agent, or something else entirely.

As bro-centric as any spy game out there—the males remain from picture to picture while the females get swapped out like hotel linens—the series at least has created some memorable heroines in the later installments, from Ethan’s fiancée Julia (Michelle Monaghan) and the doomed Lindsey Farris (Keri Russell) in III to kick-ass IMF agent Jane Carter (Paula Patton) in Ghost Protocol.

Ilsa Faust follows suit, and Ferguson equips the character with the proper mix of wariness and weariness. Harris, soon to be seen as Macduff in the Michael Fassbender version of Macbeth, provides a genuine strain of whispery menace as Solomon Lane, and it’s always amusing to watch Baldwin bloviate.

As for Cruise, he can be dependably found at the center of all of the film’s complicated set-pieces. If Christopher McQuarrie isn’t quite as skilled as his predecessors in the director’s chair (Brian De Palma on I, J.J. Abrams on III, Brad Bird on GP) at milking the action sequences for maximum impact—the vehicular chases tend to drag—he still gets enough juice out of the more unusual set-ups, such as Ethan hanging onto the side of an ascending airplane or holding his breath underwater as he’s battered every which way including loose.
