Epic fail in the DA’s office

For those of you who are recent arrivals to Savannah, the name Ashleigh Moore may not have much resonance.

But her murder nearly a decade ago was one of the most disturbing crime stories seen here for quite awhile — in a town already notorious for its outlandish but true crime stories.

In April 2003, 12-year-old Ashleigh Moore was reported missing by her mother’s live-in boyfriend Bobby Buckner.

It was a far-reaching move for Buckner, since due to previous sex offenses he wasn’t allowed to be around females under 16 without another adult present.

He was arrested for violating parole.

Weeks later Ashleigh still hadn’t been found. The case received national attention when it was featured on a highly-rated forerunner of today’s reality TV trend, “America’s Most Wanted.”

On May 14, 2003, Ashleigh’s body was finally discovered — apparently sexually violated — downtown by the river. Questions centered not only on Buckner himself, a convicted sex offender, but on Ashleigh’s mother Michelle, who claimed to know nothing of her boyfriend’s past.

The unresolved murder brought to the forefront many of the old Savannah issues we still deal with today: fatherless homes, dysfunctional families, recidivist criminals on the street, the plight of the most defenseless among us.

We didn’t see a lot of photos of Ashleigh, but the one the media used the most was particularly heartbreaking in its depiction of a bespectacled young girl with a polite, open, but slightly shy expression.

Buckner was charged with the murder and the associated sexual offense. What unfolded next was like something out of Dickens or Kafka: a tale of blunders, bureaucracy, legal limbo and a seemingly endless trial which has made a mockery of the local District Attorney’s office.

For many, the news on May 30 that the case against Buckner was dismissed

by Judge Penny Haas Freesemann in a

blistering 36-page ruling came as a shock.

But the tea leaves were clear some time ago.

The Chatham County District Attorney’s Office, currently headed by DA Larry Chisolm, is tasked with prosecuting defendants in the name of the victim(s). In this case both the victim and the defendant are obvious: Moore is the victim, Buckner the defendant.

But what’s often lost is the fact that the DA, as “the state,” not only represents victims like Moore, it brings actions against accused lawbreakers on our behalf as well.

That’s one reason it’s an elected office.

In this case not only were Moore, her family, and you and I denied justice by the premature end to Buckner’s trial, Buckner’s own Sixth Amendment rights were violated by his bizarrely long wait for trial (Judge Freesemann ruled that a total of nearly 40 months of the wait was the DA’s fault) and for eventual indictment (Buckner was actually indicted three times, waiting five years on one of them).

In other words: No one was served well in this case, neither plaintiff nor defendant nor the community at large. Epic fail.

“Consistently throughout the judge’s order, she cites neglect on the part of the state,” says Meg Daly Heap, who once worked in the Chatham County DA’s office and is now running against Chisolm for the DA position in this November’s election.

“It wasn’t just one incident,” says Heap.

Recorded interviews with key witnesses went missing. Pages of documentation were gone. Physical evidence was mishandled.

Copies of documents were given to the judge but not to the defense.

At one point late last year, Judge Freesemann took the rare step of issuing an “Order on Disclosure on Discovery.”

“That’s almost unprecedented,” says Heap. “The court repeatedly had to intervene and preside over the exchange of discovery.”

Also at issue is the blithe way in which the state approached capital punishment.

The DA’s office had already delayed, or “continued,” the case many times with little explanation when in April 2011 — the day Buckner’s trial was set to begin — it abruptly announced it would seek the death penalty.

Presiding Judge Perry Brannen didn’t see that coming. He stepped down and Judge Freesemann came in as the largely separate and much more complex capital punishment process was triggered.

“Upon the announcement of the State’s intent to seek the death penalty, however, the course of Defendant’s case deviated considerably from that of other violent felony cases,” wrote Judge Freesemann in a classic bit of understatement.

A scant four months later, the DA’s office then announced it was dropping the death penalty bid. Incredibly, their main stated reason was that because of staff changes they hadn’t been able to fully review the evidence — eight years after the murder.

At one point an assistant DA meekly said to the judge, “I honestly do not know whether the document he is describing is in the volume of documents that we have.”

Judge Freesemann mused that the death penalty was a bluff to force a plea bargain, but “it appears that when this attempt failed the State was unwilling, or unprepared, to deal with the necessarily heightened level of detail-oriented work that is required....”

Simply put, in the Moore case our DA’s office displayed either a poor command of the facts or a cavalier disregard for them, “and neither is acceptable,” says Heap.

The fact that the case was inherited from the prior DA is hardly a good excuse.

“Back in the day a young prosecutor would never go into the courtroom and tell the judge, ‘well, my secretary didn’t do this or do that,’” says Heap.

“The buck always stops with the DA.” So after all this time, justice for Ashleigh Moore won’t be served. Buckner remains in jail on other charges, but only until 2016.

But this November, Chatham County voters will get their chance to be heard. cs

Thanks for leaving all kinds of slightly–used goodies in the lanes when you moved out — what didn’t fit in your parents’ car would make any freegan weep with wild hippie joy.

Even my uptight yuppie neighbors have been picking through all manner of furniture, books, art supplies and strange craft projects involving feathers and rusty nails. In fact, as soon as I finish writing this, I’m going dumpster diving with the dog. (If any other readers appreciated this upcycle bonanza, please post photos of your scores on Connect’s Facebook page.)

Also, much gratitude for the SCAD New Alumni Concert. Your gift from President Paula Wallace has become a first–of–summer tradition for the whole city.

Mostly, these free shows run fairly mellow, maybe ‘cause you new alumni are so exhausted from moving all your stuff out to the curb. The weather put a damper on Michael Franti & Spearhead in 2009, and last year’s Cold War Kids show was downright taciturn.Even when the names are kindofahugedeal (James Brown, ‘05) or bound to bring out the conspicuous drug users (cough, cough, Ziggy Marley, ‘07), it’s a family– friendly scene, if your family’s friends don’t see anything wrong with sipping a few beers and watching the kids do cartwheels into other people’s picnics.

Then there was English pop diva Natasha Bedingfield in 2008.

In spite of having been raised on a strict diet of old school ska and Led Zeppelin, my children are Top 40 groupies and “Pocketful of Sunshine” was burning up their clock radios that spring. I was charged with marking prime territory for the gig, so I headed out in the afternoon and set up a nice camp of four lawn chairs and Grandma’s knitted purple blanket.

At first, all was bucolic. I sipped a tall glass of tea and watched the crew unload. I counted birds. I conducted a conference call with my managing editor at the time, who did not need to know I was barefoot and smelling

of sunscreen. I grooved to Ms. Bedingfield’s sound check. I napped.

Then, Forsyth Park became my personal Altamont.

(For the younguns, that’s the 1969 free concert at an overcrowded California race track where a bloody riot broke out during the Rolling Stones’ set. First bad idea: Hiring the Hells Angels as security.)

Around sunset, my husband arrived with the kidlets, so much smaller than they are now. The rest of Savannah sauntered in, rolling their coolers. The 20 feet between our chairs and the stage, so reasonably wide and grassy a few hours before, began to fill in with teenagers.

And then even more of them, elbowing past us. They stepped on my purple blanket. A lit cigarette grazed my daughter’s hair. This claustrophobic crush of so many bodies was dizzying, exacerbated by cheap cologne.

(Really? The kids these days still wear Polo?)

By the time the music started, someone had swiped our snack bag, and my husband was hunkered like a 300–pound bouncer over our progeny, who had squeezed under everyone’s legs to the front of the stage.

I didn’t hear a single song as I was fending off an insane 16 year–old who kept calling me a very inappropriate word (it rhymes with what the batter does when he holds the bat in front of him to hit the pitch lightly) because she couldn’t push past the solid wall I had constructed out of my platform shoes and seething maternal ferocity.

Then she tried to bite me, stupid little zombie girl.

I finally sicced her on the guy with the cologne, reached over the storm of humanity and grabbed my husband by the collar. He pried our children’s fingers off the fence and we pushed our way out of the crowd, abandoning our chairs (I did rescue Grandma’s blanket).

Not my favorite experience. It took A LOT of yoga to get over it.

So you would think that when it was announced that our family newest favorite musical obsession, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, was playing

this year’s SCAD Alumni Concert, I’d exercise some common sense.

And I did! I was out there at NOON skulking around the soundbooth. Soundcheck wasn’t until 4 p.m. (because duh, they’re nocturnal), but I scoped out a spot and prepared a defense.

Don’t worry, this time I brought firefighters and a roll of yellow caution tape. And a taser. Kidding!

There were no swarms of feral teenyboppers to be seen, and in spite of the dire weather warnings, the only thing dark and stormy was in my red Solo cup (thanks to Kristin Harward–Grant for introducing Dark and Stormys, a fantastic concoction of ginger beer and dark rum.)

As far as this groupie is concerned, it was the best alumni show yet: Grace coated the sky with her honey voice while her night–loving band rocked with tunes new and old, then Florida homeboys JJ Grey & Mofro followed up with a soulful set of inspired blues.

Best of all, there was all the room anyone, of any age, could possibly need to dance. Turn a few cartwheels, even. *** Friday’s concert in the park marked the first round of Chickenov, a greasy epicureal concours held in several parts to determine the city’s best fried chicken. Reigning champion Masada Kitchen at the United House of Prayer for All People in Garden City won in 2009’s inaugural double–blind tasting.

This year competition is already hot and greasy: A title holder in multiple Connect Best of Savannah categories, Sisters of the New South beat out Café Florie, Kennedy Fried Chicken and West Duffy Café on this qualifying turn. Other bracket winners will be determined in several events over the summer; the supersecret Chickenov Committee says the next one will be in late July and the definitive finals will be held during September’s Jazz Festival.

Raise a glass to an enduring Savannah institution

You know the old Southern adage: In Atlanta, they ask you what business you’re in. In Charleston, they ask your mama’s maiden name. In Savannah, the most important question has always been, “What do you want to drink?”

No matter what the answer is, the people at Johnnie Ganem’s have kept Savannah’s glasses full for the past 70 years. And whatever you may think about the evils of alcohol, this shop has a history as wholesome and honorable as it gets.

From the moment Johnnie Ganem opened his tiny package shop on the corner of Price and Gaston in 1942, the budding small businessman was the go–to guy for wine and booze.

He emerged as “the host with the most” at several different eateries at a new location just down the block on Habersham a few years later.

A first generation Lebanese–American and devout Roman Catholic, Ganem penetrated the upper echelons of Savannah society with his easy charm and honest business practices, becoming a member of the Hibernian Society and the Elks Club and rising to a Fourth Degree Knight of

Columbus. He was active in both in church and civic life, and some will tell you he’s a good part of the reason Savannah’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration “is what it is.”

Yet he was also known for treating all his customers with respect and kindness, whether they were buying a bottle of expensive French wine for a dinner party or a single can of Schlitz to be enjoyed from the paper bag in the parking lot.

The legendary liquor purveyor and restaurateur passed away in 1972 at 56, suffering a heart attack on his beloved St. Patrick’s Day. But his good name lives on: His family has continued his tradition of supplying libations in the manner to which

Savannah has become accustomed.

Pop into Johnnie Ganem’s and you’ll find some amalgam of surviving kin: There’s Margaret Rose, the eldest daughter, and Evelyn, the baby of the brood who runs the office.

Evelyn’s daughter, Marianne, is the marketing director.

Anyone who’s serious about wine knows Paul, the middle Ganem son and resident sommelier. Two other brothers, John Jr. and Charles, worked in their father’s store for years before setting up their own respective businesses in town.

“Daddy trained all of us in some aspect of the business as we were growing up,” explains Evelyn. “John was a host, Paul was in the kitchen,

Even their indefatigable mother, 91-year–old Louise Ganem, still comes in to count the register.

“She just went down to five days a week from six,” chuckles Evelyn.

Also a child of Lebanese immigrants, Louise grew up in Jacksonville and was introduced to Johnnie in the heady years after WWII by a nosy acquaintance playing matchmaker.

“It was kind of wanderlust when I was young. I traveled all over,” the lady confides with a grin. “I came to Savannah to meet a friend, and I ended up working at a little luncheonette. He was the coin pick–up man for the jukebox and somebody told him he had to meet the cute little Lebanese girl.”

The couple settled in Thunderbolt and set to work starting a family and growing a business. Not content to stay home, Louise was a partner from the beginning, raising the children as the shop expanded.

“I was always involved in the business,” she says proudly. “I always worked, whether as waitress or a hostess or a soda jerk.”

“Basically, we were here in strollers,” laughs Margaret Rose.

In 1949, Johnnie acquired a vacant lot on Habersham with the vision of turning it into a restaurant. (“He always had an eye on the property,” remembers Louise.) He built a space to accommodate a drive–thru window for the package store and a sunny spot for The Habersham House, a

quintessential ‘50s soda fountain complete with vinyl booths and thick malts, and always hoppin’ with boys in penny loafers and girls in poodle skirts.

A few years later, the entrepreneur bought the four–story house behind his shop and opened The Steak Ranch, a high–end chophouse that grilled its meat over coals and quickly emerged as a favorite amongst the movers and shakers of the time: Picture the biggest business deals of the day hashed out over three–martini lunches by guys in Mad Men suits.

(Folks still talk about the “Garbage Steak,” so named because it was a cut of tenderloin so choice that if wasn’t cooked to order the day it came from the wholesalers, it had to be thrown away. At $10.50, the Garbage Steak was the highest ticket item on the menu. Such were the good ol’ days.)

In the early ‘60s, Johnnie lopped off the top of the back building and opened the Rebel Room, a weekend supper club featuring a three-piece combo.

“People would get all dressed up and come to eat and dance,” reminisces Evelyn. “We had a group that would come every Saturday night.”

The Rebel Room got its name from the collection of Library of Congress replica portraits on the original Savannah gray brick walls depicting local Confederate soldiers along with General Robert E. Lee. Though they may seem politically incorrect, the portraits remain a point of pride for the family as they were bequeathed to Johnnie by his dear friend, the late

In most neighborhoods, a liquor store on the corner might be considered a scourge, but even in the city’s necrotic years, business continued to boom. People still came to eat and dance, and of course, pick up a bottle and a pack of smokes to go.

“In the late sixties, early seventies, the whole downtown area was in decline,” says Paul. “We were blessed that we had very little of those troubles.”

The veritable compound saw its share of celebrities over the years, including the dashing Cary Grant, Telly Savalas and Burt Reynolds (in town to film that crazy car chase down the middle of Forsyth Park at the beginning of The Longest Yard).

But the most incredible star sighting had to be in September 1964, when the plane carrying a young band from Liverpool was diverted from their Jacksonville destination to avoid Hurricane Dora.

“I remember my uncle came over one night, real late, and got me out of bed,” Margaret Rose mentions casually. “I walked into the Steak Ranch and there were the Beatles.”

Though the Fab Four’s clandestine midnight stopover in Savannah is not documented anywhere (alas, no Ganems snapped any photos that night, though Margaret Rose still has the autographs), Beatles authority Mark Lewisohn confirms in The Complete Beatles Chronicle that the band’s plane was indeed rerouted from Quebec during their first North American tour: There was a stop in Key West on Sept. 9, and records show that the Fab Four arrived in Jacksonville just hours before their scheduled performance on Sept. 11, 1964.

How they ended up in Savannah is anyone’s guess — perhaps another attempt to fly into Jacksonville during the hurricane on Sept. 10 went south.

Or north, as it were.

All the Ganem restaurants had closed by 1982, and even dynamo chef Paul got out of catering a few years ago. But Johnnie Ganem’s original pursuit remains, making it the oldest package store in the city.

The family is celebrating the shop’s 70th anniversary this year with seven different Rebel Room wine tasting events to benefit local charities, including Second Harvest Food Bank, The American Cancer Society, the Rape Crisis Center and the Women’s Legacy Council of the United Way. “Our dad always believed in service, in giving back to the community,” says Paul. “He always wanted to help out the neighborhood.”

“We’re focusing on local chapters that do their work right here in Savannah,” adds Evelyn.

They kick off with a VIP party June 14, which would’ve been the patriarch’s 97th birthday. If he were here to raise a toast to seven decades in business, what would be in the glass?

“Hmm, what did Daddy drink?” muses Evelyn.“ He drank vodka in the summer...” “... and scotch in the winter,” finishes Paul.

“Dewar’s,” confirms Margaret Rose.

With that, they clink glasses to an entrepreneur and community leader who was most of all a family man.

Chatham Police Dept. incident reports

Leads going dry Police acknowledge that “information being provided on the shooting death of an 18–year–old high school student found on East 54th Street in April has decreased” and they are hoping the public can provide more.

The focus is on a two–hour period before Donte Cleophus Swan, 18, of the 100 block of Heritage Way, was found dead in the street between Bull and Abercorn at 8:20 p.m. April 19.

Swan had left his father’s window tinting and stereo shop on East Derenne Avenue about two hours before in his blue 1983 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. The car was found abandoned with the stereo and lights on at Maupus and Harmon streets a few minutes after the shooting.

Detectives think“ the whereabouts of the car in those two hours could be

instrumental in tying together other bits of information that have been uncovered” and are hoping the public will help.

“The car was painted a distinctive shade of blue,” said Capt. Dean Fagerstrom of the SCMPD Violent Crimes Division. “It was located so quickly after the shooting because someone who recognized it as belonging to the victim called to report its location. It could be very helpful to us to know where it was before the shooting.”

Residents on 54th Street reported hearing shots and two vehicles speeding away. Police suspect the area where the body was found had no relation to the crime itself. They feel “the victim and shooter were passing through when the shooting occurred.”

The Ardsley Park Chatham Crescent Neighborhood Association has provided additional reward money to that already offered by Crimestoppers for information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of the shooter.

• One man is in custody following an operation by the Chatham–Savannah Counter Narcotics Team (CNT). Agents working undercover learned of a suspected shipment of marijuana coming to Savannah through the mail. In partnership with the United States Postal Service (USPS) and the Chatham County Sheriff ’s K–9 Unit, they intercepted the package on arrival. Agents found more than 20 pounds of marijuana with a street value of $40,000.

The package was then delivered to the addressed business located on the Westside. CNT arrested 35–year–old Terry Lavan McCoy of Savannah.

McCoy was charged with Trafficking Marijuana and Obstruction.

• A 51–year–old woman has been charged with aggravated assault after shooting her former boyfriend.

Terry Brown of the 100 block of Seabring Place was arrested at the Chatham Apartments on the 600 block of Abercorn Street just after the 1:15 a.m shooting.

Charlie Williams, 59, was transported to Memorial University Medical Center with a bullet wound through his lower body and was scheduled to undergo surgery for the wound. He said he was in bed when Brown, with whom he had just ended a relationship, came into his room and shot him. KTUL-TV, reporting in April on the Sooner Golden Retriever Rescue in Tulsa, Okla., profiled Tanner (a Golden Retriever blind from epilepsy and suffering seizures, incontinence and biting frenzies), who took a shine to the arrival of Blair (a homeless black Labrador with a gunshot wound). Almost immediately, noted Rescue personnel, Tanner became playful, as Blair led him around the grounds in much the way that assistance dogs guide blind humans. Both dogs have thus staved off being euthanized and are being considered for joint adoption.

I’ve heard that instead of heading to an old folks’ home when you reach that age, it’s cheaper (and presumably more fun) to go on an endless cruise. All your meals are covered, first-rate medical attention is available, and hey, you get to see the world. It also means you don’t have to take a bus to visit a casino. If you don’t need 24/7 medical care, is a cruise the way to go? —Brian I’m not sure if this is a testament to what a bargain cruise ships are or an indictment of the geriatric care industry.

But at first glance at least, a long-term sunset cruise, so to speak, looks like a pretty good deal.

Booking yourself an extended cruise isn’t much different from permanently checking into a luxury hotel: in each case you get maid service, utilities and maintenance are covered, and you never have to cook another meal in your life.

With a hotel, though, you’re stuck in one place, whereas on a cruise ship you can get to just about any interesting coastal locale on earth.

In 2004 geriatrics doctors Lee Lindquist and Robert Golub studied the tradeoffs between a permanent cruise and an assisted living facility.

They didn’t extend the comparison to include nursing homes, presumably due to the difficulty of caring for elderly people with serious mobility or health-management issues aboard a ship. They found the national average rate for assisted living was about $79 per day, or $28,689 per year. There was considerable variation: Chicago-area assisted living care was nearly $40,000 a year, and homes for the upper crust approached $50,000. But even using the average figure, the cruise option cost only $2,422 more over 20 years.

Cruise ships have a much higher employee-to-guest ratio than assisted living facilities. All meals are provided, with escorts if needed, and laundry, hair salons, and other white-glove services are common. Conclusion: for roughly the same money as assisted living, cruis-

ing gives you better quality of life.

But as anyone who’s dealt with elderly parents knows, by the time most people are ready for assisted living, they’re past the point where an endless cruise would be anywhere near as much fun as it sounds.

Lindquist and Golub tacitly acknowledge this. They say the ideal cruise candidate is mentally sharp and capable of community living. But they also say more than half of those in assisted living facilities suffer from dementia and a quarter have been diagnosed as depressed. Even if you don’t fall into those categories, you’re still likely to require a lot more maintenance than cruise ships are accustomed to providing.

Fact is, onboard medical staff is often stretched thin even under normal circumstances. One study of medical care on a world cruise found that with an average passenger count of about 700 and a staff complement of around 540, medical personnel saw an average of 37 patients per day for everything from the usual colds and owies to cardiac arrest.

Overall, cruise ship doctors saw two to three times as many patients as their land-based colleagues.

In addition, while onboard medical staffers are generally well trained, they don’t include the range of specialists the elderly typically see on a regular basis.

If an emergency arises that they’re not ready for and you can’t wait till the ship reaches the next port, your ambulance ride is almost certainly going to be an airlift, which can be expensive and logistically problematic.

A long cruise exposes you to passengers from different countries with varying levels of health care and vaccination.

Contagious illness can sweep through a ship—the Centers for Disease Control lists more than 130 serious outbreaks of gastrointestinal ailments on international cruise vessels from 2005 to date.

In 2010, for example, more than 400 of 1,800 passengers on the cruise ship Celebrity Mercury developed diarrhea and vomiting due to a virus. That’s not pleasant for anybody, but the elderly suffer more.

And let’s face it: constant travel, just like you and me, gets old. We in the developed world can enjoy a cruise or some other adventure quite late in life by historical standards. BEN PRESTAGE At 8 p.m. Thursday, June 7

Huc–a–Poos, 1213 U.S. 80, Tybee Island Back in Martin County, Florida, where I lived before moving to Savannah four years ago, we used to go out to hear Ben Prestage all the time. “I grew up in rural Florida, on a 14–mile–long dirt road, near the headwaters of the Everglades,” he says in his online biography. “It was 7 miles either direction to the nearest paved road, and when you got to pavement, you still weren’t near a town.

It was panther, gator, and cottonmouth country.”

Ben is a one–man band, a blues guitarist of visceral playing and a vocalist of guttural ooze and grit. He is truly amazing on both counts. And he’s got a cool beard.

He plays both bass and snare drum with foot pedals – something he picked up while busking on Memphis streetcorners.

“I started playing drums with my feet as an attention grabber,” he says, “but soon found out that the drums played with foot pedals actually enhaced my music dramatically. Not only were people listening and buyin’ discs, they were now dancing and hollerin’ to boot.

“Now I am to the point where, if you close your eyes, you would think there was a professional drummer with a full–size drum kit behind me.”

Add to this his stunning ability to create something alive from a cigar box guitar, a steel Resonator or a fiddle ... this is a guy you do not want to miss.

THE DISTRICT ATTORNEYS With Modern Skirts

At 10 p.m. Friday, June 8 The Jinx, 127 W. Congress St. $8 advance, $10 at the door This Savannah Stopover–sponsored show brings together two of Athens’ shimmeriest pop bands on one groovy bill. Modern Skirts, of course, played Congress Street Social Club last week, and the band was profiled on this very page. Their combination of strong, keyboard–driven melodies, riffy guitars and clever vocal harmony arrangements have held them in good stead among fans of pop innovation since 2004.

One of the many highlights of the ’12 Stopover back in March was the Ships of the Sea set by the District Attorneys (they opened for the great Cheyenne Marie Mize and the even greater Milagres).

The D.A.s’ music is guitar–based pop, very melodic and hooky, but – check the just–released debut album Slowburner – drenched in gauze and reverb, making it both in–the–moment and dreamlike. This should be an absolutely killer Jinx-night.

Interview WITH ONE of the most commanding and unforgettable baritone voices in modern history, Sherrill Milnes spent more than four decades at the top of the operatic mountain. Beloved for his dramatic interpretations of Verdi, Milnes in fact made his Metropolitan Opera debut as Valentin in Gonoud’s Faust in 1965. He stayed with the Met for 32 years.

He’s a teacher now, imparting his great wisdom and professional insights — not to mention his tremendous class — into all things to a new generation of opera singers.

“I had a 42–year career,” Milnes says. “I don’t sing any more.” Then he laughs: “It’s all rust.”

He continues: “That’s 42 years of earning a living from singing, but that doesn’t include 10 or 15 years before that in my mother’s church choirs, and other church choirs around the Chicago area.

“So we’re really talking upwards of 60 years of singing and vocalizing and memorizing. And singing in the shower and in the car and whatever.

And studying music all the time. I don’t mind not doing it.”

With his wife, soprano Maria Zouves, Milnes runs V.O.I.C.Experience, a not–for–profit organization dedicated, he explains, to vocal arts education, outreach and performance, to “helping the college graduate get to ‘the next level’ professionally. We’re not a placement agency, but in an indirect way: We make singers better so that we can be placed because they’re good!”

The company is based in Florida, but has begun expanding and now has direct connections in Statesboro and Savannah.

On Thursday, June 7, the group’s second local concert will be held at Christ Church Episcopal. Like its predecessor in March, the concert is called Beautiful Voices, because that’s what it’s all about: Eight young singers, all graduates of V.O.I.C.Experience and all now working with various opera companies around the world, will perform with piano and organ accompaniment.

Milnes will deliver the opening remarks, and conduct several pieces.

“It’s a mixed bag of opera, operetta and Broadway, staged,” he explains.

“My wife is very clever about staging. We think it’s old–fashioned that somebody walks out, people applaud, they sing a piece. People applaud, they walk off. Next person walks on.

“Well, that’s not terrible, but it’s old–fashioned. My wife is very clever at staging things so it seems natural rather than a quote–unquote formal setting.”

Crossover is an important element of today’s vocal arts recital.

“Broadway is an American musical form,” Milnes says. “Most opera isn’t, of course, but today singers have to sing Bach, Beethoven, Puccini and Sondheim. You have to sing everything.”

With regard to opera, Milnes believes, “We Americans still have a cultural inferiority complex. We tend to think of breastplates and horns. Well, that’s a hundred years ago, it’s not the case any more. You have females that you could put on the cover of Playboy or whatever. It’s

a very different situation than even when I started, let’s say 50 years ago.”

Thursday’s performance will also include select singers from the Savannah Philharmonic Chorus, and several high school vocalists from a recent V.O.I.C.Experience Savannah master class.

Milnes and Zouves are quite smitten with Savannah. And once they discovered a void in the city’s performance calendar, they began to get ideas.

“It turned out there was no opera going on,” says Milnes. “Peter Shannon with the orchestra has done some semi–staged things, but nothing in the way that we do it. He’s not there to teach people to be better performers — he puts on performances, and that’s great.

“But we felt, when we were in Statesboro and Savannah, that a lot of the citizens picked up on the fact that hey, this program could be wonderful in Savannah. There are performing venues, and the people love it.

“And we saw a need in Savannah, and a place where we would do our work with love and support. Support, of course, is very important — we don’t have a pot of gold sitting off somewhere that G.E. or GM or whoever has endowed us. We’re totally tributary.”

As for Milnes, the things he can impart to students — especially the subtle things — are invaluable. “A song recital, to some degree, is still the same as it has always been — it’s not about staging. There is a greater formality. But still, your eyes, your face, your body English, appropriate gestures for the piece — all of that is very important.

“And so in a recital, we train people to stand still. You can interpret, and not move your feet. Because it’s not about dance. It’s not about footwork.

It’s about making meaning out of the words. The cutting edge pursuit of the artistic intersection of tradition and technology isn’t necessarily limited to those fresh out of their teens.

Local artist Kathy Salter — part of the husband/wife team that runs Daly & Salter Photography, this year’s “Best Photography Service” winner in our Best of Savannah Readers Poll — has embarked on that quest well after her college years.

Her unique “Impressions by Kathy” involve either shooting photos or using photos provided by clients, manipulating them with software, and then adding her own acrylic brushstrokes on top of the print.

The end results are one–of–a–kind works that are a lot closer to classic Impressionism than to vividly realistic, overly Photoshopped pieces.

“Just because I can take a 90-yearold lady’s face and make her look 16 doesn’t mean I should do it,” says Salter. “In the photography world Photoshop is a tool they can’t do

without — but it’s just a tool, not necessarily a process of recreating.

“People sometimes misunderstand my work. I’m just creating a digital image through a computer program, but using the program as a tool — just as artists have used brushes, paints and canvas for centuries.”

Salter says she’s still a believer that “you take the picture right — you don’t rely on Photoshop to correct, nor do you use Photoshop and make it more of a graphic design item, as opposed to an art form of composition and lighting.”

While Salter is relatively new to the brush — both the literal and digital type — she is very familiar with photography from the family business.

“I grew up in photography, so that was life to me. I actually backed away from it for awhile because that was all

I knew and I wanted to learn something different,” she says.

After a stint in the medical field and a few other pursuits, “I’m coming back now into photography and art.

As I‘ve gotten older my appreciation for photography and what I can actually accomplish has gotten better.”

And as many others have discovered, part of the journey wasn’t only artistic development but personal fulfillment.

“When I first came into business with my husband, I was business manager, and generally did some not so awe–inspiring jobs,” she laughs. “I was looking for something that would give me my own entity so I would be my own person.”

Eventually, the availability and versatility of programs like Photoshop and Painter convinced her to reach out in a new direction.

“I saw this style coming out in the forefront, I enjoyed it and liked what I saw, and decided to pursue learning all of this,” she says. “Plus it’s a little

bonus to what Daly and Salter could offer clients.”

While Salter’s art is to an extent an expression of her own individuality, she stresses that her husband Steve Daly is a vital part of the process.

“My husband has a degree in art, so he critiques and helpd me grow as more of an artist — because I never felt I was one before,” she says.

“I came from the portrait world and the photography world, where your focus is on everything being sharp, crisp, and finished. What I’m doing now is taking that crispness and changing it to a painting feel. There’s not always that defined realism.”

Salter describes a “fine line” where her husband’s portrait work ends and hers begins. “I would say probably 60 percent of our clients get portraits in the standard way, but others are gradually coming over, wanting to go up another notch.” cs Check out Kathy’s work at www.impressionsbykathy.com

The fish tacos at Flying Fish Bar & Grill

Fishing for compliments Granted, lunchtime at Wednesday may not be prime time at Wilmington Island’s Flying Fish Bar & Grill. I thought that would be a good thing.

I didn’t want to be there when the place is packed with weekend warriors filling the large outdoor decks. I knew those are the restaurant’s bestattended time slots, when buckets of cold Bud Light flow like water and a large part of the shrimp harvest is devoured by the deep–fried basketful.

Maybe I should have.

The lone server covering the 15 or so diners during lunch was clearly rushed. Food usually takes a while here — the menu even tells you that — and when it arrived it was pretty much dropped and she ran. A request for extra napkins caught us with a wadded up pile of paper.

The good news is that drink refills arrived without a request, but were placed so far away we had to stand up to reach the glasses.

The interior is bright, colorful — and then that atmosphere is dampened by grayish, heavy duty plastic tablecloths. I would rather see the

picnic tables inside than these downers draping the dining room.

I chose calamari as an appetizer. I got a basket full of crunchy bits — the victims of too long in the hot fat. I didn’t know how many calamari died for this serving, but the deaths were in vain.

I particularly like the tentacles, which had been fried to the point of no squid inside, just crispy little bits of breading. The surviving rings were very rubbery — all the tenderness and moisture had been cooked away.

My fish tacos didn’t fare much better. The dish is ample — three corn tortillas stuffed with massive amounts of lettuce and one fish “finger” per taco. Standard fare crinkle cut French fries accompanied and were, now surprisingly, fried just right.

Again though, the fish suffered from fryer dehydration. Good flavor on the breading for sure, just not much fish flesh to enjoy.

My friend’s special shrimp — supposedly hotter than the Buffalo shrimp — support the theory that taking good hot sauce and adding something else to it is a bad idea. The seasoning wasn’t that spicy, although the big shrimp might have been pretty darned good without the sauced coating.

Bottom line: Attention to detail is critical, with every plate at every time of the day. Any other time, my experience might have swung the other way — as I’m sure many of you have had a good, or even great meal here. This day it wasn’t in the stars.

What did resonate positively was the check. The calamari would be a steal at $6.95 if cooked properly; likewise the fish tacos — also at $6.95.

Locals make B movie a fun ride

Here’s the thing about zombies: They’re disgusting. Unlike sexy, sparkly vampires, zombies lurch around like drunk lepers and eat entrails. They are not something to cheer for, or, God forbid, emulate (unless, apparently, you live in Florida. Or Maryland. Or Canada. Oh dear God, what is happening to this world?!)

Even for those who don’t crave human flesh, zombies live on in the modern psyche, dragging their unholy corpses through video games (because it’s incredibly satisfying to decapitate them) and awful horror movies (because it’s incredibly satisfying to see them decapitated.)

And make no mistake, Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies is terrible. In the best possible way.

Written and directed by Richard Schenkman and filmed in and around Savannah, the low–budget horror flick is set in the middle of the Civil War, a week before the 16th president is set to address the families of fallen soldiers in Gettysburg, PA. When his aides inform him that a cadre of walking dead have taken over the strategic stronghold of Fort Pulaski, he puts his presidential schedule on hold and whips out a rusty scythe to do battle with a flock of skulking flesh–eaters.

Blood spillage and quote–worthy bad dialogue ensue. (Prediction: “Masticate THIS!” will go viral.)

An intentional rip–off that aims to ride the tailwind of Tim Burton’s highly–anticipated Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter hitting theaters next month, this “mockbuster” was created to go straight to DVD. It was

released last week to download or rent through Netflix and Red Box and had a rare big screen appearance in back–to–back showings on Memorial Day, causing its rabidly loyal local cast and crew and a few lucky invitees to descend upon the Jepson.

Though Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies didn’t bring celebrities or loads of cash to town like The Conspirator did or the upcoming CBGB hopefully will, it still pumped up Savannah’s street cred as a feature film location.

Savannah Film Office commissioner Jay Self helped coordinate the permits and says he treated the Los Angeles– based Schenkman and his crew with the same respect as he would any big Hollywood production.

Because of the measly $150K budget—which would barely cover the snacks in a blockbuster production— Self was also called into action as a zombie extra, along with his daughter, Emily.

“I was happy to help out,” he shrugged at last Monday’s premiere.

“Isn’t being a zombie on everyone’s bucket list?”

While it won’t win anyone any Oscars, the gory feature was a boon for local talent. Except for the key roles and crew, everyone else hired

was from the Savannah area. As someone put it, Abraham Lincoln vs.

Zombies “had more of an effect on the local film community than Forrest Gump.”

The production company, Asylum Films, brought on local producer/ director Jody Schiesser on First Assistant Director (he produced the 2007 award–winning short film The Street Cleaner) and Savannah–based filmmaker Tim Gill as Director of Photography, along with a host of area actors, many of whom had worked together on past projects.

“This brought so many Savannah people together,” said Schiesser.

“Working with everyone you know was part of the joy.”

Local actor David Harland Rousseau was bumped from a bit part to Second Assistant Director when the production went into full swing, making him the film’s unofficial “Chief Zombie Wrangler.”

“There were around 60 of them, and it was a long shooting day,” recalls Rousseau. Along with schooling the zombies in set etiquette, he also demonstrated the perfect lurch. (Yes, these are traditional slow–moving zombies, unlike the new breed of lightning– quick braineaters in Resident Evil and

Cheese factor aside, there is much to love about this hysterical historical drama. Gill’s sunbleached cinematography presents Fort Pulaski and Oatland Island as starkly beautiful and perfectly creepy. And while you will hear some of the worst Southern accents ever documented, there are some standout performances: Bill Oberst, Jr. (some will recognize him from Scheisser’s The Street Cleaner) gives a believable turn as Lincoln–as– badass while imbuing the character with the president’s signature stalwart leadership; his Gettysburg Address

is so compelling, you might forget you’re watching a monster movie.

Even the plot contains some unexpected depth, including the creative device of John Wilkes Booth as a double agent (played as charmingly disturbed by Jason Vail) and a rather impressive soliloquy comparing the mindless affliction of zombiehood to the evil effects of slavery.

But choke us in the shallow water before we get too deep. As you enjoy Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies in your living room, you may want to follow the directive of Schenkman, who doesn’t take his bargain basement

masterpiece too seriously. In an email read by Scheisser at the screening, the director (who also plays a horse–riding doctor in his own film) suggests a drinking game: Toss one back every time you see a zombie appear that perished in a previous scene.

We say every time you see someone you recognize, make it a double. CS A screening of Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies happens this Friday at 7:30 pm at the Averitt Center for the Arts in Statesboro.

Savannah doesn’t look a whole lot like the Bowery in the 1970s. But it’s here where Unclaimed Freight Productions will shoot the majority of its independent movie CBGB, starting June 25.

Although the interior scenes will be filmed on soundstages inside Meddin Studios, a yet–undisclosed downtown location will shortly be made over as the facade of the legendary New York nightclub, a Lower East Side landmark from 1973 to 2006.

British actor Alan Rickman is playing clubowner Hilly Kristal, who named the place after the type of music he intended to present there: Country, Bluegrass, Blues.

Beneath the letters CBGB on the venue’s iconic awning, however, there was this head–scratcher: OMFUG. According to Krystal, the extra initials stood for Other Music for Uplifting Gormandizers.

A gormandizer is one who enjoys overeating, gorging, stuffing his or her face. In Kristal’s view, fans of good music could never get enough, and they would, he predicted, be “uplifted” by the gourmand delights of stinky, sweaty CBGB. He was right.

It was indeed a tiny and undistinguished hole in the wall, but CBGB nevertheless was where the Ramones, Blondie, Patti Smith, Television, Talking Heads and a dozen other acts got their big breaks, when such upstarts were getting turned away from other, more established clubs. As disco raged across town at Studio 54, American punk, and what came to be called New Wave, simmered and gestated on the dank stage of 315 Bowery.

By hiring bands that couldn’t get gigs anywhere else, Kristal helped change the landscape of American music. His only caveat was that they

perform original songs only. No cover bands allowed.

And that’s why husband–and–wife creative team Randall Miller and Jody Savin are making CBGB: Kristal’s joint played a pivotal role in the evolution of American popular music.

As for why they’re making CBGB in Savannah, well, it’s a combination of factors, including the participation of Meddin’s Nick Gant (who is a co–producer), Georgia’s generous tax incentives for filmmakers (it’s ridiculously expensive to film in New York), and the fact that Unclaimed Freight was here a year ago making the drama Savannah, written and directed by local resident Annette Heywood–Carter.

Miller and Savin wrote the CBGB screenplay. Miller, who will direct, is co–producing along with Savin and Brad Rosenberger, a music industry veteran who currently co–owns the independent label Omnivore.

Unclaimed Freight is a pioneer in financing, producing and distributing motion pictures without studio support. The company’s last three films, Marilyn Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing & Charm School, Nobel Son and Bottle Shock (the latter two starring Rickman) were not paid for or distributed by a Hollywood studio. The New York Times calls this “going the orphan– indie” route.

This gives the filmmakers control of every aspect of their product. The downside, Miller told the Times, is “an enormous amount of work, an enormous amount of stress, no sleep and lots of people I’ve come to know

and love who have given me millions of dollars.”

Although budget figures for CBGB have not been announced, Unclaimed Freight reportedly raised $10 million to make Bottle Shock.

The company’s next project will be The Drummer, a biography of the late Beach Boy Dennis Wilson, starring Aaron Eckhart and Vera Farmiga.

Now, about the CBGB supporting cast: Rupert Grint. Yes, one of Rickman’s Harry Potter co–stars, Ron Weasley himself, will portray Dead Boys guitarist Cheetah Chrome.

Malin Akerman. The Swedish– born actress (Wanderlust and the upcoming Rock of Ages) has been signed to play Blondie singer Debbie Harry. Akerman recently replaced Lindsay Lohan as Linda Lovelace in

the troubled bio–pic Inferno.

Joel David Moore. The long and lanky actor played Dr. Norm Spellman in Avatar, Gordon in Shark Night, and was a regular on the TV series Bones. In CBGB, he stars as long and lanky singer Joey Ramone.

Julian Acosta as Johnny Ramone, the punk pioneers’ guitar player. The Puerto Rican actor is best known for his appearances on TV series The Defenders, Franklin & Bash, The Mentalist and Dirt.

Stana Katic. She plays Det. Kate Beckett on the ABC crime series Castle, and appeared in a handful of films including the James Bond thriller Quantum of Solace. Her character is the great singer Genya Ravan, of the band Ten Wheel Drive. Ravan, by the way, also produced the first Dead Boys album, Young, Loud and Snotty.

Others in the cast include Richard De Klerk (Repeaters) as CBGB soundman Taxi; Josh Zuckerman (Sex Drive) as Punk magazine creator John Holmstrom; Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy) as someone called Mad Mountain; and Estelle Harris (Estelle Costanza from Seinfeld!) as Kristal’s mother, Bertha.

Alan Rickman’s first high–profile role was as the chief terrorist in Die Hard (1988), the Euro–trash Hans Gruber. He was the first bad guy to go up against Bruce Willis’ John McClane.

His other, best–known films include Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, the cult comedies Dogma and Galaxy Quest, the Jane Austen drama Sense and Sensibility, and the charming all–star Christmas treat Love Actually.

And Rickman had his throat cut by demon barber Johnny Depp in Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd.

Still, he’s recognized and loved the world over as the dark, mysterious – and tragically misunderstood – Hogwarts professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter film series.

He was most recently seen in Theresa Rebeck’s comedy Seminar on Broadway. In the Times, reviewer Ben Brantley praised Rickman as “a virtuoso of disdain,” and declared it “a pleasure to hear Mr. Rickman pronounce ‘semicolon’ with a pinching nasality that turns a punctuation mark into a symptom of terminal constipation.”

Unclaimed Freight says to expect more casting announcements – including a few musical surprises – over the coming days and weeks. CS

Let’s get the obvious out of the way: Snow White and the Huntsman, the year’s second big–screen outing centered around a forlorn princess, a wicked queen and a magnificent seven, is infinitely superior to Mirror Mirror, which proved to be about as appetizing as a worm–infested apple. If it isn’t a complete success, that’s because its ambitions are often thwarted by its execution.

Kristen Stewart embodies the most independent Snow White yet seen on film, and if she doesn’t always seem comfortable in the role, she’s certainly an improvement over Mirror Mirror’s bland Lily Collins. Too busy to waste time washing the dwarves’ dishes and waiting for her prince to come, she stands alongside all men (including Chris Hemsworth as the title huntsman) as they unite to bring down the fearsome, supernaturally endowed queen (Charlize Theron) who has usurped Snow’s rightful claim to her kingdom.

An accomplished director of television commercials, Rupert Sanders makes his feature debut with this picture, and his vision, tag–teamed with those of production designer Dominic Watkins, thrice–Oscar– winning costumer Colleen Atwood and the CGI gang, results in a rich look for the film, with its expansive kingdoms and daunting forests. Unfortunately, the story ultimately becomes more Tolkien than Grimm, with extraneous additions and radical reworkings

meant to assuage moviegoers weaned on the Peter Jackson trilogy.

Theron is excellent as the vicious ruler who, in a nice bit of unstated hypocrisy, rails against the tendency of men to suck the youth out of fair maidens before discarding them but then proceeds to do likewise in her own sorcerous way. She’s a scary figure, a perfect counterpoint to Stewart’s equal–opportunity Snow White.

What doesn’t represent equal opportunity is the decision to cast name actors (Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins, etc.) as the dwarves and cut them down to size via visual effects.

Mirror Mirror at least had the decency to cast real dwarves – with so few roles available to little people, the route taken by Snow White and the Huntsman is an unfortunate one, and really no different than if the makers of the recent hit Think Like a Man had decided to cast all the principal parts with white actors in blackface. continues on p. 30

Ably adopting Jones’ mumbly demeanor, Brolin does a bang–up job portraying the younger Agent K. But since he’s MIA for this entire midsection of the movie, Jones doesn’t have time to reestablish his rapport with Smith, and their chemistry is off to a startling degree – so much, in fact, that it’s almost as if they had applied the movie’s iconic Neuralyzers on themselves and forgotten their previous co–starring ventures.

It’s been 15 years since the release of the delightful Men in Black and a decade since the escape of its lamentable first sequel, and in the interim, audiences have been clamoring for another follow–up only slightly more than they’ve been jonesing for another Home Alone entry – that is to say, not much at all. It’s not that the original MiB doesn’t have its legion of fans – hell, I’m one of them – but when a studio waits this long to make another film in a popular franchise, it doesn’t boast of creative revitalization as much as it smacks of cast and crew members looking for an easy paycheck via a product with name Battleship recognition.

Love it or hate it, Borat, the 2006 mockumentary that turned Sacha Baron Cohen from a minor cult figure into a bona fide star, pushed the envelope in new and unexpected ways. And while it registered as a disappointment, so did Cohen’s 2009 Bruno, which again found the filmmaker placing a fictitious character in real–world settings.

It was probably too much to hope that The Dictator would operate in the same fashion, and indeed, Cohen has added something to the picture that prevents it from completely succeeding: a plot.

The early going is hilarious, as we witness how Cohen’s Admiral General Aladeen rules the North African country of Wadiya (that is to say, cruelly and ineptly). But formula filmmaking quickly sets in. Aladeen’s right–hand man (Ben Kingsley) plots to have his leader assassinated so the West can tap the country’s vast oil supply; the scheme really kicks into gear when Aladeen arrives in New York to address the United Nations.

Instead, he winds up hiding out, hoping to stop the simpleton who’s doubling for him from turning Wadiya into a democracy.

The picture never runs completely dry but it’s clear that finally, perhaps irrevocably, Hollywood has conquered Sacha Baron Cohen rather than the other way around.

The Avengers

The Avengers is, quite simply, a brainy and brawny blast for anyone who appreciates summer movies in general and superhero flicks in specificity. Directly stemming from plot points glimpsed in Thor and Captain America, this finds the God of Thunder’s (Chris Hemsworth) evil half–brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) conspiring to get his hands on the Tesseract, a cosmic cube that will grant him unlimited power. Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), head of S.H.I.E.L.D., realizes it’s going to take more than one hero to prevent the subjugation of our planet’s people.

Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans), still adjusting to a post–WWII life, and Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) are quick to answer the call. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) is more reluctant.

And Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), hiding out in an Asian jungle, is extremely reluctant, since he feels it’s best to keep his alter ego, the rampaging Hulk, far away from civilization.

The midsection is the best part, as the heroes spend more time battling each other than assessing the situation regarding Loki. It’s putting it mildly to state that this is a veritable clash of the titans, with oversized personalities rubbing each other raw.

Stark’s cavalier attitude versus Rogers’ stoicism provides most of the tension, but there’s plenty of unease to go around.

The surprising scene–stealer is Ruffalo, who provides Bruce Banner with a stirring soulfulness that was missing in earlier portrayals by other actors.

It’s another all–star idiocy that strands a number of good (and some not–so–good) actors in several thematic vignettes of competing dopiness. This adaptation of Heidi Murkoff ’s nonfiction guide doesn’t go out of its way to insult the intelligence of its viewers; that’s not to say the picture is particularly funny or insightful, but at least it’s relatively painless.
