The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center is a museum of conscience, an education center, a convener of dialogue, and a beacon of light for inclusive freedom around the globe. Our mission is to reveal stories of freedom’s heroes, from the era of the Underground Railroad to contemporary times, challenging and inspiring everyone to take courageous steps of freedom today. Join us for our Freedom 55 Programming Series throughout 2019 as we commemorate the 55th anniversary of Freedom Summer. Programming includes lectures, panel discussions, book signings, film screenings, musical performances and more. Freedom Summer was a 1964 voter registration drive also known as the Mississippi Summer Project. The goal was to end the prevailing discriminatory and segregated voting system through increased voter registration of African Americans. In preparation, hundreds of student volunteers gathered for two, one-week orientation sessions from June 14 to June 27, 1964 at Western College for Women (present day Miami University) in Oxford, OH. Culture Vol 2. no.1 magazine. My name is Aaryn Barnes; I’m an entrepreneur who has a passion for art and culture. Studying Communication Arts at Wilmington College and Audio Video Production all while minoring business management attending Cincinnati State. I began to learn I had a niche for various forms of art and business. Joshua stots & Antonio Freeman, are dreamers as well as realist. Realizing this in a world of constant challenges, pressure and stress. One must have a place of refuge or a hideaway to recover and rejuvenate to find peace. As a kid Josh enjoyed the precious moments after school. Having the house to himself, free from stress the more he would grow to appreciate those moments of solace and peace even more as an adult. The Two believe there is an art to relaxation and expressed their art of relaxation through cooking and concocting. If it isn’t food their cooking for sweet indulgences their whipping up something pleasing for the mind, body and spirit. Whether it is a soothing face mask to ease the mind or a delicious meal to feed the soul. It’s those moments where “Peace on Earth” is achieved. The dreamers inside of Gloasis wish and believe everyone should experience those special moments of peace and solace.

slaves? We went to war for our mother and still you produced our pains. You took away our fathers, then mode our young man insane. In the streets we feel free, all we wanted was change for better days we may see them 40 acres ain’t come. You tried to build us as scare crows and brainwash our seeds in this world of the brace homelessness hasn’t seized. As the richer get rich and the poor stay poor we all want things to be different. When you think of culture what do you think about? Maybe a sacrifice, maybe a tradition that one is thinking about doing and claiming it a “Culture”. How about unity all the art and materials to make you and me. It means my black showing up above those who said I would never rose. It means one. That one thing we share rather we see it or not. In this episode of PoPolitickin, we politick with rapper and choreographer Sharaya J. A native Hawaiian, but raised in Jersey City, New Jersey, Sharaya J has always been an artist at heart. She was exposed early by her father who was a member of 90’s Hip Hop group Double XX Posse. Sharaya has always been a natural performer. With a very successful career in the dance industry working with the likes of Diddy, Rihanna, Ciara and Alicia Keys as well as great choreographers like Laurianne Gibson, Fatima Robinson and Jamaica Craft, Sharaya is no stranger to the spotlight. In 2013, after a chance encounter, she landed a deal with The Goldmind Inc. This allowed Sharaya the opportunity to study and work under the legendary Missy Elliott as her protégé. Within the same year, Sharaya J released her debut single “BANJI”. This record not only displayed an underground Jersey Club rhythmic sound, but it also created an international movement. Never slowing down, Sharaya released two more singles, “Takin’ It No More” and “Shut It Down” which set the dance world ablaze.

Lamont Moxley known as Grand Stein the artist grew up in Lincoln Heights a historical community located in Cincinnati Ohio. He is what some would call a jack-of-all-trades, with a passion for the art of fashion. His journey designing clothes began in 2014 and since has led him to create his own brand “HandsDown.” HandsDown was created to stand as a movement that could build people’s confidence by each piece of clothing tailored towards them. Grand Stein likes to think of his mind as the brand of confidence, after seeing the impact he has on people. The confidence given once someone wears his brand is enough to inspires & motivate the artist within. He continues to love what he does and give thanks to God for his blessings and talents bestowed on him. “For those of you who work hard to become a better person than who you were yesterday, I pray that God continues to bless us abundantly. For we are the future Kings and Queens of society, it is our job to make the world a better place. You are never alone when we’re in this together; I love each and every one of my fans, supporters, family and friends. I do this for us HandsDown.”
Nasir Meatchem, a current student who attends Cincinnati State is studying for his Associates of Arts and soon looking to transfer to the University of Cincinnati for Urban Design. Sets out to show there is nothing more normal than being oneself, by painting pictures that do just that in which display everyday feelings we tend to share amongst each other. He started drawing roughly around age 5, learning shading throughout high school he would later on venture to paintings.
Over the last two years he has gone on to be featured in local art shows such as “Artist Need Lunch Money” & “RAW”. Nasir looks to make the most out of his third year by hosting his own art show as well as attending Art Basel.
Augusta Savage
Born: Green Cove Springs, FL (1892) Died: New YorkCity (1962) Up bringing: Born seventh of four-
teen children to a father who was a poor Methodist minister who despised his daughters passion for art. Augusta would push through the whippings and harsh treatment in pursuit of her love for art.
Impact: Augusta Savage’s Career would
blossom during the 1930’s during the Harlem Renaissance. She would soon be well known in Harlem as a sculptor, art teacher and community art program director.
Lois Mailou Jones
Born: Boston, Massachusetts (1905) Died: Washington, DC (1998) Up bringing: After experiencing rejec-
tion from Boston Museum School based on her skin color. Lois went on to join the art department at Howard University teaching watercolour painting preparing her students for a competitive career in the arts
Impact: Lois work reflected the influ-
ences of African traditions. She would become a role model for African American artists who specialize in the fields of watercolor, costumes, textile designs, paintings and collages
Dorothy Height
Born: Richmond, VA (1912) Died: Washington, D.C. (2010)
Up bringing: Dorothy Height and her
family moved to Rankin, Pennsylvania where she attended racially integrated schools. In high school she would go on to be recognized for oratory on a national level
Impact: Focusing on the issues Afri-
can-American women faced including unemployment, illiteracy and voter awareness. Dorothy would become known for the role she played as an American administrator and educator who worked as a civil rights and women’s rights activist

burgh, Naomi had no choice but to struggle in the foster system. But with determination and passion she outsourced and landed the cover of “The New York Times”. Impact: One of the first successful black models while still in their teens to achieve worldwide recognition appearing on the covers of stature fashion and popular magazines
Little Richard
Born: Macon, Georgia (1932) Up bringing: Forced to move out at the age 13, Richard would grow found of the church. Pursuing his passion through the church he would discover his talent to play the piano. Impact: Established rock as a musical platform and inspired others such as the Beatles. Richard is one of the 10 original inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Born: Pinehurst, GA (1934) Died: New York City, NY (1997) Up bringing: Sheltered from racism by
her foster parents, Betty would encounter a group of African American women who organized campaigns to support black owned businesses and boycott stores that refused to hire black employees.
Impact: An American educator and civil
rights advocate. Who became influenced after experiencing her first encounter of racism.

Jr, Self-taught fashion designer from Cincinnati with an intense passion for all things fashion. Mary’s been involved in the industry since 2006, It wasn’t until 2014 when she gained the confidence to make clothing for people. Her passion for fashion design started as young girl; she lived in a small 3 bedroom apartment in OTR which housed 9 people. Although most of her wardrobe consisted of hand-me-downs, she’s always had an enthralling sense of style.” I understood at a young age that other kids in my situation wouldn’t look at my life and say you are blessed because they don’t understand that wearing clothes that don’t stand for you and being flashy are material.”
Lavish Vixenz is a Model Team based in Cincinnati Ohio. Founded by Natasha Reynolds “The Drill Sergeant of Modelling” seven years ago. She set out with hopes to help aspiring models break into the modelling industry, without the hassles most freelance models endure. However for the first two years her efforts would go unnoticed. After rebranding over the years she would go on to transition from just one model to a team of ten. While Natasha still sets out to help models in their careers, her mission expands as she wants models to stand for more than just pretty faces in a photo. Models now have the opportunity to experience runway training, workshops, casting do’s and don’ts, professional/model etiquettes all while building their confidence, self-esteems and so much more.

Creator and freelance graphic designer, Antonio Freeman, began thinking of different ways to share graphic artwork and many other forms of art during the summer of 2018. After many days & nights of brainstorming, Antonio finally came to a conclusion on how he could exhibit visual ecstasy. This meant creating a platform for all artist and creative minds to share and exhibit their work, thus bringing him to the creation of Fresh Artwxrk. Born as an only child, Antonio Freeman has always had family influencing his advancement in artwork. Art has always been a passion from simple drawings at home & school to seeing billboards lit up with advertisement filled with art.
As he grew older, his indulgence in art continued to increase; this brought him to begin designing with digital graphics & creating content for others. With the continued success of his content creation for clients, driven by his passion for graphic arts. He began to think of ways to share & collaborate with creative like-minded individuals to exhibit fresh artwork in ways to uplift, expand the mind, create appreciation art build a better artistic community. After countless sleepless nights days field with stagnate thoughts, he finally came to the conclusion of Fresh Artwxrk.
