Dear Congressional Families, Teachers are at the heart of the Congressional School experience. They are our most valuable asset. When we invest in and support our teachers, the benefits are realized exponentially. Each individual investment touches the lives of many children who gain significantly from their teacher’s knowledge, passion, expertise, and intellectual challenge. Our teachers are lifelong learners and their appetite for knowledge and passion for learning is inspirational to the students who look to them for guidance and wisdom. The Faculty Fellowship Program was launched five years ago. Our commitment to professional development has remained strong. In fact, our investment in this area has continued to grow. Turning to the most celebrated, research-informed professionals at institutions including Stanford, Columbia, and the University of Virginia, our teachers are learning from the best in their fields and bringing this knowledge back to their classrooms. The support for our teachers isn’t limited to professional development, however. We’ve also continued to invest significantly in tools and equipment to augment teaching and learning in all grades. In 2017-18, robotics and coding took our campus by storm and engaged students starting as young as preschool. The level of complexity of the STEM challenges increases at an impressive pace from grade to grade and our students are innately eager and willing to tackle every challenge. And, let’s not forget Congressional’s youngest learners in the Early Childhood program. We recognize the importance of learning and development in very young children, and under the loving care of our expert staff and

4 Congressional School

new STEM educator, our youngest Colts are provided the best learning advantages possible. When we lengthened the school day last year, our teachers didn’t blink at the prospect of adding an additional 40-hours of instructional time to their plates. In fact, they were excited at the prospect of what they could accomplish with this time. When we approached them about introducing an electives program in Middle School, they were eager to jump in and offer a wide-range of classes for students to further explore areas of interest. And, as we’ve continued to grow our STEM program, our teachers have pursued opportunities to stay well-informed in this ever-evolving and critically important area. As a member of our school community, every interaction you have with Congressional School makes a difference to our teachers, to our students, and to our school as a whole. Whether you have attended one of our events, volunteered your time, made a gift to The Congressional Fund, or donated to our Gala, every contribution makes an impact. The theme of last year’s annual giving was “Ignite the Spark,” and as you can see on the pages of this Annual Report, the generosity of our school community has fueled our success in so many ways. We are grateful for each expression of support – thank you! Sincerely,

Andrea Weiss Interim Head of School

Our goal during the high school transition process is to help students and parents find the “right fit” high school. By eighth grade, a student’s unique qualities have emerged, helping to make the task of selecting the right high school a more streamlined, personal process. We’re proud to say that 90% of our graduates place into their first choice high schools.

Both in the Big School and Little School, students have been learning what it takes to maintain garden beds as a part of service learning. We provide environments, both in the classroom and outside on our 40 acres, that encourage our students to always explore and question, sparking a curiosity that leads to discovery. 14 Congressional School

Alan Meltzer: CEO, NFP | The Meltzer Group

In your view, what is the greatest benefit of attending an independent school?

“I think the experience the students will have at an independent school is the greatest benefit. Education comes in many forms and it’s not restricted to just reading text books. You can learn a great deal by interacting with and being exposed to people of diverse backgrounds. Hearing about their experiences and their perspectives can open up a fresh point of view that you may not have considered previously. An independent school offers this level of diversity in the people and their ideas, and the students are the ones who get to benefit from this.”

Why did you decide to make a four-year commitment to Congressional School for a total of $100,000?

“We like to align ourselves with similar-minded institutions and businesses. A great organization not only succeeds in its day-to-day business operation, but in the way it impacts its surrounding community. Whether it’s volunteering at a local charity, participating in a school supply drive, or even a simple monetary donation, we believe we have a responsibility to give back to others, and we want to work with organizations, like Congressional School, that share this same mindset.”

The Allexon Family P’20 ‘24

What makes Congressional School a special place for your family?

“Simply put, our family feels at home. The campus is unlike anything in the area and it offers educational opportunities no other school can. The learning environment is first rate. The faculty and the staff are supportive, caring and invested our children’s success, development and well-being.”

Why have you chosen to prioritize Congressional School in your philanthropy?

“Congressional is a great school and it is incredibly successful at producing mature, capable students. But that success isn’t guaranteed. It requires strong leadership and strong support from parents to ensure the school is adequately resourced. We choose to give to Congressional because investing in the school’s ongoing excellence makes sense - for our kids and others, too.” Report of Giving 2017-2018 23

Maryam Razimoghaddam, Junior Kindergarten Assistant Teacher

How long have you worked at Congressional School?

“I have dedicated twenty years of my life to the education, love and care of children, and I have shared my passion for early childhood education with the students and families of Congressional for ten years.”

Why do you love teaching in the Little School?

“The Little School is a special community; we have the most caring and friendly staff and we are able to make lifelong connections and bonds with our families. The Little School feels like my second home!”

Why do you give to support The Congressional Fund?

“I strongly believe that the giving is not about the money, it is not simply about the amount you give. For me, it is about participating in something with all of my colleagues, cooperating and working together to reach a common goal. It feels like we are working together as a whole community when we all give something to The Congressional Fund.”

One of the critical skills we instill in all of our students is collaborationâ€”learning to work in big groups, small groups, difficult groups, and to balance opinions and make compromises. Most people work in jobs where collaboration is unavoidable and invaluable. This is the future for which we are preparing our students. 38 Congressional School

Derek Bowley, Speech and Drama Teacher

How long have you worked at Congressional School?

“I started at Congressional School in December 2006. I’m coming up on my 12-year anniversary, and this is my 13th school year, thus Into the Woods JR. will be my 13th musical as director.”

Why have you led faculty participation for The Congressional Fund over the last few years?

“Because I’m such a believer in the school, its mission, and everything we are trying to accomplish, I want us to have every opportunity available to us. On top of that, I come from a background in non-profit theater, where the price of the ticket doesn’t cover all of the operating costs, just like tuition doesn’t cover all of the operating costs for an independent school. It’s important for everyone to do their part. Helping to lead the charge leverages my communication skills, as well as my relationship with the other teachers. Also, it’s such an easy job! For most people, they just need the reminder. They know about The Congressional Fund, and they are ready to give.”

Gala and Auction 2018 Our annual fundraising auction is one of our most popular community events of the school year. Through the generosity of businesses and individuals, we have been able to raise funds to support our programs and enrich the academic lives of our students. All funds raised by the 2018 Gala, The Congressional Derby, support campus-wide STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) initiatives including: • Two State-of-the-Art Design Labs in the Big School that will be used for science, engineering, and any projects needing fabrication, kindergarten through 8th grade.

• A Design Space in the Little School to provide construction elements, age-appropriate robots, and additional design resources where students can tinker and begin building their critical thinking foundation.

• Opportunities for continued education for faculty in Maker education and project-based learning in order to continue deepening the educational experience for our young learners and to optimize the use of our new design lab and spaces.

Mariam Es-Haq P’28: Managing Partner, MindPoint Group Why did you choose support STEM at Congressional School through your giving?

“As a Cybersecurity company, MindPoint Group is keenly aware of the shortage of qualified technical resources in our industry. Today, we have over 300,000 unfilled cybersecurity positions as a nation, and myriad case studies conclude that tackling this challenge requires long term systematic change in our education system toward a focus on STEM. The challenge for many schools is STEM programming requires extensive investment in an environment of school budget cuts. So we asked, what are we doing to engage K-12, how can we help and who can we partner with? As a mother of a Junior Kindergarten student at Congressional School, I am also very personally motivated to see a STEM program flourish. The school’s vision for expanding its STEM program and its methodical plan for execution, as well as, the school leadership team’s passion for teaching young learners confirmed to me that we had found our STEM education partner in Congressional School. We had a very successful first year in this partnership and we look forward to continuing our support and partnership with Congressional School and Congressional Camp.”
