There is a story about two brothers who lived on the opposite sides of a hill. One was married and had a large family, while the other was single. Each was a wheat farmer and each was blessed with a bountiful crop. The unmarried brother, observing his good fortune, thought to himself that God had blessed him with more than he needed, whereas his brother, who was blessed with a large family, could surely use more. He arose in the middle of the night and secretly took from his grain and put it in his brother’s pile. Similarly, the married brother thought to himself that he was fortunate to have children who will care for him in his old age, while his brother will depend on what he saved. He, too, arose in the middle of the night and quietly transferred grain from his pile to his brother’s. In the morning, each pondered why there was no noticeable decrease in his own pile, and so they repeated the transfer the next night. This continued for several nights, until one night the brothers bumped into each other. In that moment they each understood what the other had been doing and they embraced. According to the legend, when God saw that display of brotherly love, God selected this site for The Temple in Jerusalem. Jerusalem is filled with places and moments of Jewish discovery and history. These moments are the connectors that bind us as Jews to Israel and to our peoplehood. The Land of Israel is filled with history, culture, and important sites that are the backbone of who we are. But perhaps most importantly, there is hummus!!!

Yes, mounds of the most delicious hummus you’ll ever taste! Grab a warm freshly baked pita and dunk it into the hummus for a culinary adventure. Eat some authentic falafel, try some shawarma, and delight in some of the most delicious dairy you’ll ever eat. Snack on fresh watermelon and mango and the tastiest chocolate rugalach on the planet. Israel provides opportunities to float in the Dead Sea, put your hand on the Kotel (Western Wall), get a birdseye view of Syria, and join in on the hustle and bustle of Tel Aviv. The best part is you have an opportunity to experience all that Israel has to offer into a beautiful 12day journey. Throughout the pilgrimage we’ll be able to bask in our biblical history, recalling the story of the two brothers, while simultaneously embedding yourself in modern Israeli and Jewish culture. Congregation B’nai Israel is going to Israel…don’t miss out on one of the most memorable and life changing opportunities of your life – December 22, 2018 - January 2nd, 2019. I hope you’ll join me on this wonderful journey. Please contact me if you are interested in learning more.

Say not: When I have time I will study, beca Over the past two months there has been much discussion over the notion of community. Congregation B’nai Israel’s Vision Statement understands and embraces this concept, specifically saying “we are a thriving and connected Jewish Community, joyfully inspired by tradition and passionately committed to worship, study and repairing the world.” Community or Common Unity is more about supporting each other in deeds and actions rather than merely agreeing with each other.

In March of 2018, Congregation B’nai Israel, along with NFTY and the Reform Movement, participated in a march. This march was one of solidarity not acquiescence. We marched not because we believe with the minority that guns should be eliminated, but we marched with the majority that violence from guns is detrimental to our society and the protection of our vulnerable community members – whether they be youth, aged or the rest of us, seeking only to peaceably carry on with our day to day activities. We marched because that is what is expected by the common unity – our community. We support each other and support everyone, while recognizing everyone may not agree or share the same perspective, and that is not only acceptable, but preferred. We live in a society where no one should be afraid to share their views or force others to accept differing points of view. By showing our solidarity as a community, only then can the individuality of our ideas be expressed openly and without rancor. So, it is in that sprit that we celebrate the 70th anniversary of Israel and the decision of the United States to move its embassy to Jerusalem, as this is what every Jew recites at the end of the Passover Seder, “Next Year in Jerusalem”. While we can be joyful over both of these milestones; for a mere 20 years

after the formation of Israel, reaching 70 years was a thought few would dare dream. We as a community will celebrate the 70th anniversary of independence, not because we agree with the religious concept that the Orthodox Jews have the monopolistic and exclusive role of religious determination, but because we agree with the concept that Israel is a place for all Jews to call home. When Israel was founded in 1948, certain agreements were made between the various Zionist movements, both secular and religious, regarding the preservation of the Jewish nature of the State. These agreements provided that the Israeli government would implement certain policies based on Orthodox Jewish interpretations of religious law. An example would be statewide requirements regarding kashrut, or the fact that public transportation is not allowed to run on the Sabbath. While we as Jews can agree to support the State of Israel, its government, leaders, military and infrastructure, it doesn’t obligate us to agree with them. We can speak out against the policies of conversion, marriage and the disparate treatment of Women of the Wall. We can and must speak out to ensure the Israeli government uphold the freedom of religion and conscience promised in its Declaration of Independence. And we must speak out to ensure the tenets of the World Union of Progressive Judaism, permeates in the core of Israel. So, on this 70th anniversary, let us all do what we need to do to be unified in our support for Israel. This is a celebration that every Jew must embrace as a community, regardless of any individual belief over a policy or policies of the government of Israel. Celebrate with us, your community, as this is the only way to ensure our individual voices will be heard. I thank each and every one of you for being part of the great Congregation B’nai Israel community and from our differing opinions comes great strength.

For those of you who are expecting a typical column of what to look forward to regarding events, the beginning of a summer schedule, and how hard we are all working (well we are, but I don’t have to mention that every month!), you can stop reading now… My column is a human-interest story focusing on the kind of people who belong to CBI and why they join our warm and welcoming congregation. I have the privilege of meeting everyone who is thinking about joining CBI, answer all their questions, tell them about us and me - when they ask, and see what they are looking for in a Synagogue. A few weeks ago, I had an appointment with a man who was married in an interfaith marriage and they had a young child. While he is considered a senior himself, he brought his 91-year-old father with him. The wife/mother of these two men had just passed away a month ago after over 60 years of marriage and I could see that they both felt lost. They had attended a few Friday night services but wanted to come in and speak with me regarding what’s involved in joining and what other programs and activities we had for them and their family. I spent the next two hours getting to know them and telling them all about CBI. The younger man wanted to go home and discuss the option with his wife, while the spry, sharp older man signed up and joined right away. The next day the younger man came in and did the same. Two days later I saw them at Friday

Have you done something amazing recently?

night services and they had already been to a Brotherhood event and met several guys who became instant friends. They were beaming and thanked me and my staff for being so nice and welcoming. The young child is starting our Religious School with the goal of a Bar Mitzvah! They loved the Shabbat services and were so impressed that people came over to them to introduce themselves and say hello not even knowing if they were members. I understand they have a full schedule of invites moving forward and I am happy. That is what CBI is all about, and you won’t find it anywhere else in the area. We pride ourselves on being warm and welcoming, our social action activities, and programs including our unrivaled pre-school and newly top level accredited Religious School. It only takes a minute to reach out and say hello to someone you don’t know or recognize. It only takes a minute to invite someone to sit with you. It only takes a minute to ask if they are planning on going to an upcoming event and arrange to meet there. It only takes a minute to create a community if everyone does that one simple act. As the weather gets warm and your routine changes, come see us and meet a new friend. It feels so good inside and out.

Have you won an award, helped others, achieved an academic distinction or perhaps you've won a sporting event? If so (or anything else you can think of), Shelanu wants to hear about it (space permitting, of course)! Our next edition is under way, so whatever age you are, from 9 to 99, please write it out, type it out or have Siri email us. The WRJ Sisterhood Chocolate Seder did not disappoint! Special thanks go to Rabbi Cohen, Kim Beame, Susan Linder, and Eileen Newmark for planning and participating in the Seder and numerous Sisterhood members who donated items for the Seder or helped with set-up and clean-up. We had to work off any extra calories at Zumba with Rabbi Cohen! Special thanks go out to Susi Glatt for coordinating with the Zumba instructor, Sonya Longo – who was full of energy, to Susan Silber - who sponsored Sonya’s attendance, and to the Board members who donated “healthy” and a few “not-as-healthy” snacks and beverages for the event. In April, Sisterhood board members participated in a Friday night Shabbat service. It was such a special evening and we were proud to be on the Bima with our clergy. Thank you to everyone who attending and enjoyed the Shabbat with us. Looking ahead, we will be hosting an important educational program, “Protect our Children: The Dangers of Human Trafficking” on Wednesday, May 2 at 7:00 PM in the Hollander Family Chapel. This program is for par-

ents, grandparents, teachers, coaches or anyone who wants to learn more about this issue and the warning signs to indicate that someone may be a victim. On Thursday, May 10 at 10:00 AM, we will be having our annual Mother’s Day Flower project where we prepare bouquets of carnations to brighten the day of residents at local nursing homes and shelters. We work this project with a smile, and the preparation always goes quickly. You can pre-register online. Our year end luncheon and installation of new board members has been scheduled for Sunday, June 3. Watch for more details and registration information. Have a wonderful Summer! The Sisterhood Board will be meeting over the summer to plan our activities for next season and we want to hear your ideas. Please feel free to contact Eileen Newmark, Vice President of Programming at 954.650.6743 or me.

ERIC HANDIS brotherhood@cbiboca.org

March was quite a busy month with the Brotherhood! On March 11th we had our monthly Bagels and Bros get together. Over 15 guys talked, laughed and of course ate a great bagel breakfast. This time, we set up a table on the walkway leading up to the entrance of the school, so we were visible to everyone who was dropping off their children. Everyone who attended received our new official Brotherhood shirt, which was sponsored by our own Howie “The Mold Inspector” Newmark. Bagels and Bros is the second Sunday of each month, so if you couldn’t make it last month come this month or the month after that. On March 22nd we had our first ever March Madness event. Two projector screens were set up in the Zimmerman Social Hall so we could watch multiple games at once. We had a great mix of close to 20 guys who watched, ate lots of pizza and snacks and had a great

time. New friends. Old friends. This will definitely become a very nice tradition. Plus, the venue and big screen will be an awesome spot to watch future popular sporting events. April 29 was our Annual Baseball game on April 29th. The Marlins vs. Rockies. You couldn’t beat those awesome seats and door to door service on an air-conditioned bus. We went in style thanks to Peter Davidson! It’s a blast every year. That’s all for now. As always, if you have any questions about Brotherhood, please call me at 561-221-4263 or email me at eric.handis@gmail.com. If you will be coming to your first event, please let me know and I will introduce you to everyone.

Who Let the Dogs Out? The front lawn of CBI had gone to the dogs (literally) at Shabbark Shalom. Friends and their best furry friends gathered for a dinner of…hot diggety dogs followed by a Shabbat Service. It was im-paws-ible to resist these adorable pups as they relaxed and even barked along to the prayers. Our dogs were given delicious treats. Their humans were given Ivy’s Rocks of Love.
