Blessings In Disguise The holiday of Purim is all about feeling joy, but what happens if we aren’t feeling joyful? What do we do if this time in our life doesn’t allow us to see the light that exists around us? How can we find this commanded happiness if we are truly unhappy? Far from just a children’s holiday, if we delve into Purim, we may just find that it holds many blessings in disguise. The first blessing can be found in the Purim story itself: Megillat Esther. The word ‘God’ does not appear even once in the story. The Megillah tells of a series of events that lead the Jews to victory. It demonstrates that just because the word is not physically visible, does not mean God’s presence doesn’t exist in the story. We often live our lives as if events are disconnected, but can it be that God’s hand is passively guiding our path? The Megillah is a lot like us. We pray to something we may not physically see, but that does not mean God doesn’t exist in every moment of our lives, even in our darkest ones. A second blessing is that we are commanded to think about others and gather together during this holiday. In addition to prayer, community is one of the greatest values of Judaism. There is a reason that Judaism is a religion that cannot be lived in solitude. Its very observance requires that we engage with people, and even more, that we support one another. There are four mitzvot, commandments, that are required in order to fulfill the observance of Purim, and each one involves being a part of a community. It is almost as if our ancestors foresaw the need to be mindful of those who may not be spiritually or emotionally ready to observe such an upbeat holiday. With these
four mitzvot, we are commanded to be with others, to surround ourselves with optimism and hope, no matter our personal circumstances. The four mitzvot are: 1) To relive the miraculous events of Purim by listening to the reading of the Megillah, the Book of Esther, 2) To give gifts to the poor, 3) To give or send gifts to friends, and 4) To have a festive meal on Purim day, rejoicing with others. These four commandments help us join in community and uplift one another. A third blessing and teaching comes from our famous Purim dessert: the hamentashen. The name comes from the antagonist of the Purim story, ‘Haman,’ combined with the Yiddish word ‘tash’ meaning ‘pocket.’ These cookies are shaped to resemble the wicked ears of Haman, and how clever that we have transformed a symbol connected to a villain into something satisfying. However, most notably, is that the tastiest part of the pastry is concealed within the dough, reminding us that many times, the best is yet to come. As we join together to recall the story of Purim, let us be mindful of God’s presence in our own lives. As we join together to rejoice, let us be mindful of those who may not have anyone with whom to rejoice. Our Purim obligations offer ways for how we can share our joy and contentment with those around us. So this Purim, if you are finding it hard to find your happiness, remember that Purim holds blessings in disguise!

The PGA Masters tournament, where you will find the original Amen Corner (11th, 12th and 13th holes), is not until April this year, however, Congregation B’nai Israel celebrates our own Amen Corner. Beginning in January where we celebrated MLK Day and the hope and uplifting we had with our local interfaith communities, through February in which we as Jews give back and literally heal our community (Avodah) with our 25th Annual Lori Sklar Mitzvah Day on February 11th and culminating in March; first with Purim and our very own traditional “Spiel” and ending with Passover. These three months, while perhaps not the pinnacle of spirituality in Judaism or at Congregation B’nai Israel, show us the deeper connection we have to the secular world around us and the importance Congregation B’nai Israel has on our local community. Our interfaith services help foster a sense of togetherness, not with fellow Jews, but the Boca Raton community at large. As we transition towards Mitzvah Day, a day where our membership community comes together and embraces our community needs. Activities will range from Brotherhood visiting JARC and BISY washing cars to Sing-Along with Miss
Susan and everything in between. Please turn to page 12 of the Shelanu for more details. Finally, as we look forward to March we have both Purim and Passover to celebrate, but more on that in the next Shelanu. What is in common about our Amen Corner at Congregation B’nai Israel is that we take time from our daily routine to appreciate, help and make the lives of the less fortunate among us better. Both in our interactions with Ebenezer and ourselves, we all can recall the time when we were enslaved and can now work towards the day everyone is offered the same opportunities. As Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “I have a dream that we will one day live in a nation where we shall not be judged by the color of our skin, but by the content of our character.” As the world around us becomes more polarized by speech, feeling and deed, please join our Congregation and me this Mitzvah Day and provide much needed Avodah to our community. Working together we can provide so much more than working apart. Come make a difference. Come Be Involved. Thank you.

For those of you who have finally recovered from the holidays and having your kids at home or visiting from college, CBI could be a wonderful haven for you to spend some time moving forward. We continue to offer top-of-the-line speakers and programming. Spirituality abounds with Shabbat services and new, special programs with our engaging clergy. Our musical programs and children’s choir continue to grow and impress. The result? New congregants joining and those who weren’t previously involved are finding themselves being drawn in. We are seeing a huge upturn in the building of a strong Jewish community. There is something for everyone to be involved with here at CBI. Looking ahead, there’s a lot coming up that you won’t want to miss. The 25th Annual Lori Sklar Mitzvah Day, on February 11, has an army of volunteers behind it and benefits so many in our community that need our help. The Estie Purim Shpiel will be a hoot this year and the cast has swelled to almost 40! There will be dinner before and a musical theatre performance! Our Nagle film series continues with outstanding offerings each month and includes popcorn to boot. Welcome back to our Passover Second Night Seder on Saturday night, March 31 led by our outstanding clergy. Details will be forthcoming and there will be limited seating – so please look out for it.
Have you done something amazing recently?
We are excited to welcome the Revital Dance Ensemble from Jerusalem, a wonderful panel led by Ambassador, Dennis Ross, exciting programs spearheaded by Sisterhood and Brotherhood, and a special opportunity to see our very own, Miss Susan, in a special concert on Sunday April 29th celebrating her 18th year here at CBI. I have only mentioned a fraction of the programs we have planned. The point is that you have so many opportunities to meet fellow congregants, interact with our clergy and professional staff. I promise, you’ll feel really comfortable and at home here on Yamato Road. As always, I am available to meet with you privately to discuss ideas, suggestions, issues, complaints and to accept compliments on behalf of CBI!! I would be remiss if I did not end this column with a huge shout out to the staff of our congregation on the incredible job they accomplished in the presentation of A Conversation with Chuck Todd of Meet the Press a few weeks ago. He was engaging, thought-provoking and a real mensch. It was really heartwarming to see the support of our congregation and a packed house for this program. Our thanks also goes out to all our wonderful Sponsors who helped make the night a reality and a huge success. There will be plenty more in store!!!

Have you won an award, helped others, achieved an academic distinction or perhaps you've won a sporting event? If so (or anything else you can think of), Shelanu wants to hear about it (space permitting, of course)! Our next edition is under way, so whatever age you are, from 9 to 99, please write it out, type it out or have Siri email us. Articles should be no more than 400 words long and if you have any pictures, well that would be the icing on the cake!

When reviewing the book, “Why Are Jews Funny”, New York Times book reviewer Mark Horowitz says, There are plenty of theories to explain Jewish humor — most devised by Jews. Saul Bellow, channeling his inner Kierkegaard, thought Jewish humor combined “laughter and trembling.” Freud believed Jewish humor was a defense mechanism: a form of sublimated aggression that lets victims of persecution safely cope with their condition. Or, as Mel Brooks put it, “If they’re laughing, how can they bludgeon you to death?” Enter the Purim Shpiel. For years I have been parodying lyrics for the shpiels, but this is the first time I have endeavored to write the entire book as well. I must say it has been so enjoyable to watch the words come alive, and during rehearsal we laugh our way through “Annie” and Purim story combined. We LOVE laughing and there has been no shortage of it during our Purim rehearsals. The Estie Purim Shpiel (our parody of the Broadway hit musical, Annie) is well on its way for curtains up. And there is a team in place to entertain you. Of course, you will see your rabbis, cantors, senior

staff, president, and choir, however this year you will also see actors and actresses from our very own congregation ranging in ages from 8 to 75. We have nearly 40 people in the cast! During a typical rehearsal we are doing our best to wrangle the orphans, tame our humorous rabbi’s extemporaneous off script clever quips, get a group of Jews to all step right on the right beat and the right time, and manage to run through more than page one before we have to run to choir rehearsal. No easy task! All the while the bloopers are hysterical and many times we simply have to pause because we are all laughing too hard to continue. We have fun and can’t wait to share the fun with you! We have surprises up our sleeves, dances in our feet and moves that will make you feel like you are at an off-Broadway Show, (well, really off-off-off Broadway) But nevertheless we hope you come to be regaled by our thoroughly theatrical thrilling thespians! You won’t want to miss it!!!

In January, Sisterhood celebrated life by participating in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in West Palm Beach. We were proud to play our part in supporting the fight against breast cancer. We also attended a Southeast District Area Day in Plantation. The Southeast District is one of eight districts of Women of Reform Judaism comprising approximately 7,000 women in Florida, Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina. At Area Day, our members experienced a taste of what Women of Reform Judaism is all about and had a chance to learn about the importance of leadership, fundraising and programming. We participated in an important social action project for Women in Distress (a local women’s shelter), attended a Spiritual Musical Service, and enjoyed hearing from guest speakers, including our very own Andrea Cannon, Immediate Past President of CBI’s Women of Reform Judaism/Sisterhood. Mark your calendars as we have so much in store for you! On March 15, we will be hosting our popular (and delicious) Chocolate Seder. This is an opportunity to sing, dance, and experience a Seder, just before Passover. The entire meal is made out of chocolate - including the wine! Watch for the CBI Insider for information on how to RSVP. On April 16, we will be hosting a new event, Zumba with the Rabbi. Rabbi Cohen along with experienced

Zumba instructor Sonya Longo will combine exercise with lots of fun and laughs. Zumba experience not required! Additionally, the WRJ Fried Leadership Conference is scheduled for March 1-4 in Nashville, Tennessee. This conference is open to all women. There is something extraordinarily valuable to be gained from meeting face to face with like-minded Reform Jewish women, and the conference has something to offer in a wide variety of areas whether for personal growth, skills training, or education on advanced Jewish topics. Stacy Beyer, who has performed at CBI, will be leading the WRJ Choir at the Conference. I will be attending the Conference and singing in the Choir. If you would like to join me, you can register at wrj. org or feel free to call me, 561.306.2930, for more information. On April 20-22, the Southeast District will be hosting a Spring Kallah at Camp Coleman in Cleveland, Georgia. This will be an opportunity for spiritual growth, relaxation, and fun and sharing with other women from the Southeast District. More details on the schedule can be found at wrjsoutheast.org. Other events for this year are being planned. I love to continue to see those familiar faces and can’t wait to see new ones as well.

2018 is off to a great start! We kicked off January’s Bagels and Bros with our longtime friends and partners at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Bagels ‘n Bros began in 2017 as a great way for our Brotherhood to get together on CBI’s campus and to reach out to and connect with our SLJ carpool Dads on the 2nd Sunday morning of each month. We’ve had a lot of fun getting together on Sunday mornings, eating breakfast and enriching our circle of Brotherhood members with a bunch of really great guys/bros. We also had a phenomenal evening event at The Barrel of Monks Brewery in Boca. Everyone who attended got to enjoy an incredible sampling of Belgium styled ale’s and beers along with a variety of cheese pairings designed to enhance the palette of each beer/ ale. A good time was had by all! So February is here and we’ve got more in store starting with our Brotherhood Shabbat on Friday, February 9th at 7:30pm. Our Brotherhood members will be conducting the service as a way of giving back to CBI and thanking our “Fab 5” clergy for all that they give to us, especially on Shabbat. We look forward to sharing a beautiful Shabbat with everyone at CBI. On
February 11th please join us as we take our Bagels ‘n Bros Brigade to JARC for a couple of hours during Mitzvah Day. We are going to host a bingo game and spend some quality time socializing with our friends at JARC. For those of you who attend our Brotherhood events, you already know how fulfilling it is to participate with our diverse and caring bunch of guys. If you have not attended any of our events for a while that’s okay too. We would love to have you join us anytime. We promise that attending our Brotherhood events is some of the best fun that you can have getting together with other caring and family-minded Jewish guys. On a personal note, we can attest to having forged many long-lasting and meaningful friendships and business relationships that have come about because of our involvement with our Brotherhood. If you have any questions about CBI’s Brotherhood please feel to call anytime at 561.221.4263. We look forward to seeing everyone at our upcoming events soon.

Our
11th and 12th grade Post Confirmation students spent MLK weekend in Washington, D.C. How to make a difference in their community, and eventually the world, was the theme of their activities. They solved problems within the political sphere, social action realm and dealt with religious tolerance. They were touched by the story from a speaker who was formally homeless, then promptly went to McPherson Square to interact with the homeless population in the park, giving them warm clothing they had brought with them to donate. It was an amazing weekend of bonding, learning and solidifying their connection to CBI. To see more pictures from our weekend, please visit the SLJ Facebook page.

The teens voted for new amendments to the NFTY-STR constitution, touching on gender neutral bathrooms and environmentally friendly products. They also elected the new regional board. Our very own Madison Rosenfield was elected to be Religious and Cultural Vice President. She will be in charge of all the Shabbat and Havdalah services and more during our regional kallot next year. CBI'S
SPOTLIGHT Alexia Brue
Co-Founder, CEO of Well + Good
Alexia Brue
is the daughter of CBI members, Suzanne & Nordahl Brue. She knows a lot about focus. It’s her personal mantra: stay focused on what matters. In both her personal and professional life, it’s helped bring her success and happiness. Eight years ago, Brue and her business partner identified the growing trend of wellness based on the popularity of their local New York Soul Cycle and “juicing”. They saw the need for a go-to digital source focused specifically on women where they could find information on everything from fitness to recipes. For the first four years, they were completely focused on New York, but have now become a source for women all over the country, reaching 10 million people through all of their digital channels. Their website: wellandgood.com makes healthy living fun, stylish and social.
with elements pulled from yoga and meditation studios. There’s a trend towards creating a more zen, relaxing environment at home – a retreat. Brue’s created that environment in her own home and is happy to spend time there. “I love spending time with my family, whether it’s doing something active like skiing or hiking or kayaking or playing a board game or cards on a cold night." She concentrates on what’s important, “My personal mantra is to stay focused on the stuff that matters. There’s so much noise and there are so many distractions and whether it’s in business or my personal life, I try to stay focused on what’s meaningful.” Alexis Brue lives in New York City’s Upper West Side with her husband and two children, ages 9 and 6. Her children both attend Jewish Day School.
Well and Good covers all of the ways wellness touches not only Brue’s life, but the modern woman’s life. Last summer she launched a section devoted to travel since people want to infuse their vacations with healthy experiences.
Well and Good employs a team of 45 members. They’ve enjoyed recent success by appearing on/in Good Morning America, The Dr. Oz S how, F a s t C o m p a n y, A M N e w Yo r k , Forbes, CBS This Morning and more.
In January, she added a home section because people are paying more attention to the toxicity of their cleaning supplies as well as decorating their home

A Conversation
with
Chuck Todd
On January 10, 2018, Congregation B’nai Israel had the privilege of hosting Chuck Todd as part of the CBI Inspires Speaker Series. Todd is one of the most passionate journalists and sharpest analysts in American media today. He is NBC News’ political director and the moderator and managing editor of Meet the Press – the longestrunning broadcast in television history. Close to 500 members, their guests and community leaders filled our Cohen/ Freidkin Sanctuary as Todd took the stage. He began his talk reminiscing about his childhood in Florida, raising his children Jewish in today’s world and walked a fine line to discuss the current political climate. He peppered his speech with humor and the hour+ he spoke for felt like mere minutes. He then answered questions that were submitted in advance and even took a suggestion from the floor. Our generous sponsors were treated to a Private Reception with champagne and delicious desserts. They took photos with Todd and even chatted with him. It was a magical evening enjoyed by all.

Women of the Wall
1.13.2018
During the program, Rabbi Cohen taught about the pluralistic, Jewish prayer group Women of the Wall, whose central mission is to achieve “the social and legal recognition of the right, as women, to wear prayer shawls, pray out loud and read from the Torah collectively at the women’s section of the Western Wall” in Jerusalem. The event concluded with a Havdallah service and an Israeli oneg. Today, Women of the Wall continues to strive for the right to pray freely with a Torah scroll in the women's section of the Western Wall in Jerusalem.
