rabbisilvers@cbiboca.org This month we celebrate Purim - the powerful story of Esther, who was called upon by her community, and at great personal risk, took on the mantle of leadership and advocated to change the fate of those who were marginalized. In her spirit, let us call out the injustice of hunger this Purim, and support MAZON (lit. “foodâ€? or “sustenanceâ€? - a Jewish Response to Hunger; an American nonprofit working to end hunger among people of all faiths and backgrounds in the United States and Israel). We can use our collective voice, as Queen Esther used hers, to share the real story of hunger in America – and work together to rewrite that story. This Purim and always, we share an obligation to care for the poor and hungry in our midst. We are commanded to provide matanot l’evyonim - gifts to the poor. In the larger sense we are asked to pursue social justice – we recognize the need to address hunger along with the other inequalities we see in our society. With your help, we can meet that obligation: the Esther within each of us fighting for a better world, marked by justice and compassion, where every person can feed themselves with dignity. You can’t see hunger, but it is all around us. Forty million Americans - that’s 1 in 8 - are not getting enough to eat. And while hunger may not be easy to see, it does not discriminate. Right here in Florida, approximately 2.8 million people, are food insecure. Hunger is the third-grader with a growling stomach eyeing his classmate’s sandwich, the elderly woman rationing out a chicken into “just enoughâ€? portions and the single mom eating leftovers off her kids’ plates for dinner. According to Feeding America, 95% of the people served by food banks and pantries are not homeless; they are people struggling to keep up with their bills each month. In fact, 69% of them are forced to choose between buying food and paying utility bills. The choice between food and electricity is one no one should have to make. This Purim, our festival of revelry and fun, where we forget our usual inhibitions and turn our usual routines on their heads, let us also remember that we have the power to transform the lives of those who are suffering. We can turn their days of hunger and mourning into days of joy. Please come celebrate Purim on Monday, March 9th at 5:30 pm as we present our CBI Purim Shpiel: Billy Joel – the Megillah Man! rabbikeller@cbiboca.org Lift Up Your Eyes and See “The Passover Haggadah prompts us all to ask a very good question: What if we were slaves and we didn’t even know it? What if what enslaved us was not a Pharaoh in Egypt but a way we’ve grown accustomed to living? How can we free ourselves? Among the many Israelites who left Egypt were two men: Sh’lumi’el and Buz. Slaves never look up; they only look down. And as slaves for their entire lives, Sh’lumi’el and Buz had grown so accustomed to looking down they could no longer lift their eyes. When Moses brought us across the Red Sea, we all witnessed the great miracle: The sea parted, and we escaped from slavery. We became a free people. We came to know that God has a purpose in our history. Sh’lumi’el asked Buz, “What do you see?� “I see mud,� Buz responded. “I see mud, too. What’s all this about freedom? We had mud in Egypt; we have mud here!� And they missed the miracle of their escape. The sea split before them, but they didn’t see it. They saw only mud. Then we stood at Mount Sinai in the Presence of God and heard God’s voice proclaiming the commandments. We accepted God’s Covenant and pledged ourselves to become a holy people, God’s partners in healing the world. Sh’lumi’el asked Buz, “What do you hear?� “I hear someone shouting commands,� Buz answered. “I hear commands, too. What’s all this about Torah? They shouted commands in Egypt; they shout commands here.� And they missed the miracle of hearing God’s voice. God spoke to every Israelite, but Sh’lumi’el and Buz didn’t hear God’s voice. They had heard enough commands. Finally, after forty years of wandering in the desert, we arrived at the Promised Land, the land of milk and honey, the land promised our ancestors. We arrived in the place of our fondest dreams.

Buz asked Sh’lumi’el, “How do you feel?â€? “My feet hurt,â€? Sh’lumi’el replied. “My feet hurt, too. What’s all this about a Promised Land? My feet hurt in Egypt; my feet hurt here!â€? And they missed the miracle of entering our own land, Eretz Yisrael. The Israelites returned to the land promised them by the Covenant. The promise to our ancestors was fulfilled, but Sh’lumi’el and Buz didn’t know it – they knew none of it. Their feet hurt too much. So, what did they do? Sh’lumi’el and Buz turned around and began walking back toward Egypt. Some say that Sh’lumi’el and Buz are still wandering in the wilderness, looking down at the desert sand and rocks and complaining to each other. Others say they went back to Egypt. Back to Pharaoh. Back to slavery. Back to the place they knew best. Back to the place where they began. Still others say they’ve seen Sh’lumi’el and Buz – or perhaps their descendants – walking among us, living right here and now, wandering about with their eyes cast down, missing all the miracles that are taking place around them all the time. They haven’t any idea where they’re going. And they continue to miss all the many chances to know about what life is all about. If only they could lift up their eyes and see!â€? *Feinstein, E. This matzah-filled holiday sits deep within our DNA as a Jewish people. It consistently reminds us that we should never lose sight of the miracles we experienced‌and continue to experience. Let’s not get stuck looking down at our feet, instead let’s celebrate our freedom and rejoice!

Dear CBI Family, In an on-going effort to provide meaningful and accessible worship services for our entire community, this past fall, we changed our Friday evening Shabbat service to 6:15 p.m. We chose this time after much thought and deliberation. It was felt that this time provided the most convenience and accessibility for members and children of all ages, thus providing a joyous communal worship experience we could all enjoy together. After several months we experienced feedback as to the challenge this earlier time created for some in our congregation. In the best interest of the congregation, we therefore held Town Hall meetings and even sent out a survey to provide our community the forum in which to express their feelings. In response to these meetings and the survey we have decided to change the Friday evening Shabbat service times to 7:00 p.m. and continue the 6:15 p.m. service on the first Friday of each month beginning in March and continuing for April and May. March 6 @ 6:15 p.m. and March 13, 20, 27 @ 7 p.m. April 3 @ 6: 15 p.m. and April 10, 17, 24 @ 7 p.m. May 1 @ 6:15 and May 8, 15, 22, 29 @ 7 p.m. Commencing with this change, we will discontinue the pre-nosh before all services but will continue to provide Oneg Shabbat refreshments after all services. Additionally, in June we will begin our normal summer schedule of early services every Friday night at 6:15 p.m. As our sole interest is in doing what’s best for the congregation, we feel, that at this time, this is the proper path to pursue. Please know that you have our assurance that this will be an on-going conversation with you, our members, to ensure that we always address the needs and concerns of all of our members with the goal to make those moments of communal gathering and prayer meaningful and accessible to all. No desire, no ambition leads me Maybe it’s because nobody needs me Spring is here! Why doesn’t the breeze delight me? Stars appear, why doesn’t the night invite me? ~Carly Simon (1981) Spring is here and while the rest of the nation thaws out, at Congregation B’nai Israel, we have been anything but frozen. Immediately after the High Holidays we hosted Mitch Albom, fed the community at Thanksgiving and again at Christmas, installed Cantor Muchnick (and were treated to a concert that rivaled one at a performing arts theatre), and helped bring tzadakah to our community with our annual Lori Sklar Mitzvah Day. As we enter the month of Adar, we are greeted with the holiday of Purim. The Halloween of the Spring, although a lot less ghoulish, Purim in America has gone mainstream. Just as everyone hails from New Orleans on Mardi Gras and feels Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, now Americans celebrate Purim in a similar way. Like Mardi Gras and St. Patrick’s Day, Purim is known for singing, dancing, eating and drinking. Purim was the holiday that introduced stand up comedy to America. Known as the badkhan, he was the first jokester, the rhyme master who regaled congregations throughout eastern Europe (it helped that they were inebriated.) The forefather to Sid Caesar, Mel Brooks, Don Rickles and Adam Sandler. They were the first Purim Shpielers who went from town to town, village to village, performing as vagabond street artists. During the Jewish diaspora, it was Purim that kept the Jewish humor alive. Come and join us on March 9th, drink a little, laugh a lot and enjoy the Purim Spiel as we once again remember the past and take Purim to the next level. It is during this time we are commanded to present gifts of pastries and fruit to our neighbors (yes, the opposite of the “trick or treatâ€? part of Halloween), and make gifts to the poor, as part of the month long preparation for Passover and the return from order to disorder. Our own Jacobson Food Pantry collection and donations to our Kantor Family Center for Justice can help you attain this mitzvah. In April we will once again read from the Haggadah and re-live the exodus from Egypt. As the Haggadah says, it is our responsibility to retell the story from generation to generation. And as we live in a country deep rooted in the sense of liberty, did you know the Hebrew word “libertyâ€? (kheroot- ‍ )תוריח‏is deeply linked to the Hebrew word “responsibilityâ€? (akhrayoot – ‍ )תוירח×?‏and they both begin with the word meaning to “follow meâ€? ( ‍)ירח×?‏. So, follow me to the Purim Shpiel on March 9th and to all the amazing offerings Congregation B’nai Israel has planned for our membership the rest of this year and into next year. Springtime has arrived, key word below, and the schedule of events, programs and services are plentiful. Purim is always a fantastic time here at CBI and this year will be no exception. Sunday, March 8th our Purim Carnival & Hamantaschen Bake return to campus! It is fun for children and adults of all ages! Please see the flyers and emails that go out with the specific activities. We are very excited that SLJ & NCECE will both host this and it promises to be an incredibly fun day! But wait there is more! The next day is our Annual, not to be missed, Purim Shpiel! If you saw what Cantor Muchnick orchestrated last year with Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, wait till you see what he and our staff and volunteers have in store for you with “Billy Joel, the Megillah Man� this year. I personally love being a part of the cast, despite the fact I cannot carry a tune at all, I just love it. The cast and the audience have a fantastic time with dinner first and an Oneg afterwards. I urge you to sign up early as you can as our last few bigger productions and programs have sold out!!

All during this time period the staff and volunteers are working on next year’s Congregation budget, which is a massive undertaking including planning next year’s schedule, registrations and programming for both schools, and planning our full calendar for 20/21. Hopefully you have read this far because I need you to mark your calendars NOW for Saturday night, January 23, 2021 for the 36th Anniversary of CBI (double Chai) extravaganza. The night will honor several people and include a great dinner, music, entertainment and an amazing auction. We will need many committee members to handle all aspects of this event so please let me know of your interest to serve on the committee regiment. Finally, as usual, (and some of you do take the opportunity), please contact me directly with thoughts, ideas, complaints, suggestions and compliments. I enjoy one on one time with our members. Programming in March and early April has something for everyone and this year my favorite holiday, Respectfully submitted, Passover, begins on April 8th with the first Seder. cantormuchnick@cbiboca.org To say the months of January and February were filled with awe inspiring moments would be an understatement! By now, many of you know that on January 31st, I was officially installed as the Senior Cantor of Congregation B’nai Israel. Many have asked what exactly is an installation? The best way I could describe it would be a spiritual covenant between congregation and clergy. It’s a mutual agreement of dedication, devotion and respect with the understanding that our goals are one in the same and long lasting. Not everyone gets installed as not every congregation and/ or Cantor feel the connection that would express a long-term relationship. But for me, and thankfully for CBI, it was â€œâ€Ślove at first sight!â€? So I am thrilled and honored to have been lovingly welcomed by this incredible congregation and community. Standing in front of the holy ark and being installed and blessed by Rabbi Silvers, Rabbi Keller, Rabbi Cohen and Cantor Weiss will truly be an event in my life that I will never forget. To celebrate this wonderful milestone, CBI hosted a Cantorial Concert, From Bimah To Broadway on February 1st and was enjoyed by a sold-out sanctuary! The event featured my dear friends, Cantors Weiss, Levy & Feibush; Cantorial Soloists Sarah Freudenberger and Michelle Auslander-Cohen and accompanist Alan Mason. Having some of my closest and dearest friends and colleagues participate and provide an awe-inspiring musical concert for this congregation and community was thrilling to say the least. I can’t thank each of them enough for taking the time to perfect this concert. And although I enjoy every opportunity to sing and harmonize with my fellow cantors and friends, the most memorable part for me was being given the opportunity to dedicate and sing to my wife, Dena. There aren’t enough songs or dedications I could perform that would express my love, admiration and gratitude for everything she does for me and especially our family. To be able to shout

that to all of you was an opportunity that I would never have missed. So once again, Dena – thank you and I love you! I would also like to take this opportunity to thank several people who helped make this vision a reality. To this entire CBI team – Rabbis Silvers, Keller, Cohen and Cantor Weiss for coordinating and officiating a heartfelt and meaningful installation service. Your kind words and excitement for our future together was nothing short of beautiful. They say it’s the job of the conductor to put all the individual pieces together to create a masterpiece. That conductor was Steve. To use your own words – for tying the knot on that ribbon – I thank you for friendship and partnership and helping “conduct� this orchestra and making it a reality. To Jessica, Marissa, Erin and the entire CBI staff – you were all the instruments in this orchestra and for your dedication and meticulous approach towards this symphony I thank you from the bottom of my heart! Thank you to everyone who volunteered on Mitzvah Day! Doing a mitzvah with our families and friends was so rewarding! Thank you to Robert Weinroth, Palm Beach County Commissioner, who Proclaimed Feb 23rd The 27th Anniversary of Lori Sklar Mitzvah day in Palm Beach County, and to Boca Raton Mayor, Scott Singer, who Proclaimed The 27th Anniversary of Lori Sklar Mitzvah Day in Boca Raton. Breakfast was served on campus, Miss Susan entertained us as our DJ and the Junior Choir sang beautifully. Magen David Adom provided tours of an ambulance on campus. Thank you to everyone who donated to the many collections and food banks. We received wonderful thank you letters. OUR NEXT COLLECTION IS FOR PASSOVER! We are collecting kosher for Passover food items. Please place your items in the blue containers near the school’s office. We will be collecting from March 23rd to April 3th. As you celebrate Passover May you be blessed With peace and happiness! Happy Passover!

2020 is going to be one of the best years yet for CBI’s Brotherhood! We’ve already started the year strong with our Brotherhood Meeting/Get Together at the Ale House on February 11th. We will be hosting our future monthly meetings on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:00 PM at the Ale House on Yamato Road. This will be a time for us to talk about our amazing group, review how things are going and to plan for the future. In addition, it will be a time for us to socialize and grab a bite together. Everyone is welcome. So, mark your calendars for the 2nd Tuesday of each month. Going forward we will have our March Madness viewing event in March, a social gathering at a location to be determined in April, a trip to a Marlins game in May and other events including a Brotherhood Shabbat. That’s just for the first 6 months of this year. We are open to ideas for additional programming, so please don’t ever hesitate to reach out to me at either ehandis@1847financial.com or by phone/text at 561.221.4263. If you have never been to a Brotherhood event and have an interest in attending, please reach out to me. You will be my personal guest and I will personally introduce you to everyone in attendance. CBI SISTERHOOD WOMEN OF REFORM JUDAISM I’m excited that our Women’s Passover Seder is scheduled for Monday evening, March 30, 2020. For those of you who attended last year, we have lots of new items planned. We will be highlighting women’s empowerment, social justice, women’s rights, and freedom, then and now. We will be serving all of the ritual foods for the Seder, and in addition, we will be hosting a buffet-style dinner with gefilte fish, salad, chicken, vegetable, potato, and dessert. Watch for the information on how to rsvp, and plan to bring your friends and family. Reservations are required by Tuesday, March 24, 2020. Matt grew u p i n New York City and H i lary grew u p i n Weston, MA with a few years spent i n Mel bou rne, Austral ia as a chi ld. We have fou r chi ldren. Ou r three you ngest kids, Madel i ne, Jacquel i ne and Ari attend Pi ne Crest School and ou r oldest, Addie, is cu rrently at O ly mpic Heig hts H ig h School and wi l l be attendi ng Ly nn University i n the fal l. We are extremely happy with ou r move and overjoyed to cal l Boca ou r home. Matt is a fou nder and fu nd manager of Boca-based Eastham Capital which i nvests equ ity i nto and owns mu ltifami ly properties across the US. W hen he resided i n MA, Matt sat on the board of di rectors and was the treasu rer of Jewish Fami ly and Chi ldren’s Service of Boston. H i lary is a “reti red” special needs teacher who left her position to be a great mom to her l ittle tri be. I n fact, H i lary was so taken with the CBI commu nity that she wanted to fu l ly be a part of it and decided to convert to Judaism. After many classes and u nder the tutelage of Rabbi Kel ler, she completed her conversion i n 2019! The Rosenthals are looki ng forward to this year and they are hopefu l that 2020 wi l l bri ng them many good thi ngs but they know that the hig hl ig ht of the year wi l l be thei r daug hter Madel i ne’s Bat Mitzvah i n March. They are very excited for her to be cal led to the Torah, read her portion and become a you ng Jewish woman. H i lary is also looki ng forward to her fi rst Al iyah. They are thri l led to be a part of the CBI fami ly and look forward to remai ni ng members for a very long ti me.
Upon arrivi ng i n Boca, Matt and H i lary looked for a sy nagogue that wou ld be a great fit with thei r fami ly and they fou nd it at CBI. W hen they fi rst moved here, Ari began attendi ng NCECE and Madel i ne and Jacquel i ne started Su ndays at the SLJ. They very much appreciate the rel igious education that CBI provides to thei r chi ldren. The one word the Rosenthals use to descri be CBI is “community.” They especial ly enjoy the Jewish education combi ned with the great sense of hu mor i nfused i nto the CBI services. For example, they look forward to attendi ng the CBI Pu ri m service with its annual ly changed whi msical theme. They also l i ke the Si mchat Torah ceremony where Rabbi 20

She collected anxiety-reducing items and calming tools such as fidget spinners, stress balls, slinkys, putty, slime, and paper and pencils. Her siblings helped her organize them into pencil boxes so that all of the stress-reducing objects could be in one convenient, portable place for those students or young adults overwhelmed with anxiety. She distributed The Stress Box to local school guidance counselors, school principals and students. She has received a great deal of positive feedback. Many people have expressed how often The Stress Box is used throughout the day, and they find it to be beneficial for reducing stress and anxiety.

THE BARRY IRA GRAFF SCHOOL FOR LIVING JUDAISM SLJ High School Students make their mark on Washington D.C. Every winter, the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism (RAC) brings over 2,000 high school students from across the country to Washington, D.C. for a weekend of learning about social justice, advocacy, and Jewish values - culminating in a lobby day on Capitol Hill. Our 11th and 12th graders were lucky to be a part of this social justice seminar called L’Taken. They travelled to Washington, D.C. January 10-13 with Rabbi Keller and SLJ Staff and hundreds of other teens from around the country. They had the opportunity to learn how the Reform Movement applies Jewish perspectives to mobilize around issues like reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, climate change, Israel, health care, and more. They spent time meeting new people, exploring Washington, DC, and traveling to Capitol Hill to meet with Congress and advocate for the things they care about and to make their voices heard!

Here is what a couple of our teens had to say about the weekend: As someone who desires to effect change in the world, either through a career in government or a career in law, I was excited to actualize this want through The Religious Action Center’s L’Taken Social Justice Seminar. Lobbying Senator Scott gave me a real-world view of the legislative and lobbying processes. I will forever cherish the skills I gained and memories I made during this life-changing experience! ~Madison Rosenfield, NFTY-STR President My experience at L’Taken was truly something that I will proudly look back on for the rest of my life. Throughout the weekend, my fellow classmates and I became educated on a variety of issues currently existing in our country and we learned a variety of ways as to how we can get involved as well as how we can create the change that we wish to see in the world. As a young Jewish adult, nothing filled me with more pride than to experience marching up Capitol Hill with people that I have essentially lived my entire life with. Getting the chance to speak our minds in the offices of our senators and representatives was truly an incredible experience and I am thankful to have been given such an amazing opportunity by Congregation B’nai Israel. ~Bradley Shimel, BISY President

What an amazing Grandparents week we have had a CBI! It was remarkable to step back and see the look in the grandparents’ eyes when they were watching their grandchildren sing or when they were singing with them. Grandparents play an important role in the lives of their grandchildren. Most of their significance to children is seen through the support and help they give to their parents. Grandparents are often seen as stress busters, family, playmates, and safety! Children seem to find unique acceptance in their relationships with grandparents, which benefits them emotionally and mentally. They're very often role models and mentors for younger generations. They are also historians -- teaching values, instilling ethnic heritage, and passing on family traditions. Grandparents are there to offer unconditional love and support. A “sleepover” at Grammy’s is something to look forward to. Please treasure every moment you have with grandparents. There are many things that children can receive from healthy relationships with grandparents; • Someone who offers unconditional love • A mentor who can help with problems • Companionship and someone to talk to • Someone who will stand beside them • A window into their parent's childhood • A sense of adventure • Kindness, humor, and patience • A zest for life • Family traditions • The ability to laugh at oneself • Life lessons

Cemetery Arrangements for CBI Members • Congregation B’nai Israel has a dedicated section at Star of David in North Lauderdale. • Star of David is a modern, clean facility that has easily accessible plots, peaceful water and paved walkways. It also allows upright headstones (while others only allow markers). The North Lauderdale location provides a convenient location for those who may be traveling in from local airports. • Because we have purchased these plots as a group, we are able to offer our members and their families a discounted rate. • Services may be held at CBI or at the Star of David Funeral Chapel.
