“And it came to pass at midnight, that the Lord smote all the first born of Egypt...” (Exodus 12:29) Midnight evokes instant images of danger and peril. We think in our era of muggers, thieves, carjackers, robbers, rapists and vandals who are able to ply their destructive trades in the darkness with a minimum of restraint. In earlier times, midnight also generated immediate impressions of ominous deeds, wild beasts foraging, men stumbling into injury and ghosts haunting. Nevertheless, the same tragedy which took the life of the Egyptian first born in the middle of the night proved beneficial to the Jews, who, as a result, were finally liberated by the obstinate Pharaoh. Darkness can, indeed, be a source of benediction. Night is the time when vegetation flourishes, and people have their vigor and vitality restored. In Israel there is a flower called the Malkat HaLayla, the Queen of the Night, because it bursts into full bloom only during the hours of darkness. Some of the most important events in the Bible occurred at night. In the midst of darkness, Jacob experienced his vision of the ladder stretching from heaven to earth with the angels ascending and descending. That was also the time when his name was changed to Israel. At the stroke of midnight David agonized over his iniquities and found his way back to the gates of repentance. Often we are preoccupied with activity during the day; and only at night can we find the leisure for reflection. The Haggadah describes in detail many events that, like the Exodus from Egypt, occurred at night. Abraham prevailed over his enemies at night. Lot and his family were saved from destruction at night. The Midianite foes were struck with terror at night. The Assyrian forces besieging Jerusalem melted away at night.
Daniel was saved from the lion’s den by interpreting terrifying dreams at night. Even Haman was defeated by God as a consequence of Ahasuerus’ sleeplessness at night. As we chant at the seder: “O God, make known that yours is the day and also the night; May You make bright like the light of day, the darkness of our night.” The rituals of Passover most of which occur during the hours of darkness impress upon us the privilege which is ours to give form and shape to the sacred and exalted goals of this celebration even at a time of the day when most people are filled with anxiety and apprehension. Our evening prayers each night also highlight how wonderful and magnificent is the arrival of darkness every twenty-four hours: Praised are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the Universe, who speaks the evening into being. In wisdom You open heaven’s gates; You are the Creator of day and night, rolling light away from darkness, and darkness from light; transforming day into night and distinguishing one from the other. Blessed are You, Adonai, who brings on the evening. Passover reminds us of our duty to use darkness in a constructive way. It is the perfect time to meditate on the deeds of the day; to envision a better world; to repent for wrong-doing; to read and to study; to benefit from the therapeutic quietness of the night; and to prepare for a better tomorrow. By contemplating the Exodus from Egypt in the midst of darkness, we can endow our lives with a profound dimension of meaning. We can recognize as well that eventually the darkness will dissipate; oppression will give way to the brightness of freedom; and gloom properly handled will produce perennial illumination and enlightenment. May this be God’s blessing for us all. May you all enjoy a Zissen Pesach – a sweet Passover.

MO RE ME ANING FU L “CB I MAKES LIF E’S JE WI SH JO UR NE Y LE VA NT JU DA ISM TO GE TH ER TH RO UGH AP ROACHA BL E RE AT ION AL HO ME” IN AN INV ITIN G, SU PP ORTIN G AN D INS PIR Last summer I shared with you the initiative your leadership undertook: identifying Congregation B’nai Israel’s DNA. Specifically, Why does our synagogue exist? Once we came to an understanding of Why we exist, each committee, auxiliary and department within CBI met to decide Who are our members. To that point, What does our synagogue promise to our members, and How should our synagogue be experienced? These four questions together make up our DNA – the unique identifier that connects all of us to CBI. During the past year, I hope you have seen how thIs DNA is replicated in our religious services, youth and adult education, social action programs and our peer to peer auxiliaries. The addition of Cantor Muchnick coupled with the earlier start times on the first and last Friday’s, was designed to target our members who wanted approachable relatable Judaism. Moreover, our recent redesign of our tuition structure for the Nadel Center for Early Childhood Education (NCECE), is designed to include every Jewish parent in their child’s pre-school education. We are working on a
similar initiative for our religious school parents. Our dues restructuring committee has developed a new category: those whose children have left home and are empty-nesters. This new category will offer the same member benefits, but tailored to those who are living their next chapter of their lives. Additionally, we have reinvented Congregation B’nai Israel’s social action offerings. From a few of large-scale projects centered around Thanksgiving and Mitzvah Day, we have now scheduled social action programs yearround. Since becoming a Brit Olam congregation, and judging from the member participation at Feed the Community, Give Back Christmas Feast at the Town Center Mall, Mitzvah Day, our monthly collections, the revamped social action offerings have resonated very favorably with our congregation and I thank you for this. “Leaving the world in a better place than we found it” is the cornerstone of what it means to be a Jew. The CBI Inspires series with Aly Raisman as our featured speaker once again displayed to our community, why CBI provides inspiration to our membership. Our CBI Brotherhood, and their initiative Bagels and Bros, has showed
how we are inviting with bagel giveaways at the carpool line during Sunday religious school. We will continue to meet and further implement initiatives designed to make the most of your membership. Please contact me if there are ideas, activities or offerings that our members would enjoy and are not yet being focused. Please bring all of your friends and join me on April 6 here at Congregation B’nai Israel for our annual fundraiser "Here Comes The Sun". There will be great food, music and auction items to bid on and schmooze with our professional staff and clergy. As I concluded last fall, DNA in biology contains the instructions needed for organisms to develop, survive and thrive, the CBI DNA contains the instruction needed for our congregation to develop, survive and thrive. We will accomplish this as each and every one of us connects, in whatever way we feel is meaningful, through involvement in Congregation B’nai Israel – Connecting By Involvement. “Do as much as you can and then just a little more.”

In thinking about what message, I want to share with you in this edition of Shelanu, I can’t help but think about the connection between the moment in the Passover story when the Israelites held the first seder and the meaning behind becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. The first seder was actually held the night before the Israelites left Egypt, raising the question, what was the function of this seder? Think about it...every seder after that very first one has focused in on celebrating how G-d freed the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. But during that first seder they were still in Egypt and they were not yet freed from slavery. The following is my own interpretation of what happened during that first seder, what its function was, and what it can teach Bar and Bat Mitzvah students. Here we go… G-d spoke to the Israelites on that last night in Egypt and told them to get prepared for the next phase of their lives, which happens to be exactly what I tell every Bar or Bat Mitzvah student. They were also told to study Hebrew prayers in order to be able to lead a service called a seder, after which there would be an elaborate meal - also sounds very similar! But mostly, they were told that this seder was a way of preparing them to be out in the real world and to one day be responsible to carry on the Jewish traditions. Then G-d told them to sit around one long table. They should sit as close to one another as possible on chairs that are only used once a year because they are so uncomfortable and to make sure that at least half of those chairs are placed right in front of the legs of the tables – making it super convenient for someone’s legs. They were told to sing songs that only some people knew all the words to but most everyone knew the chorus (like - eelu something something anu - dayenu!). They were told to dip foods into various ‘dips’ in order to laugh at each other as they turn beet red with eyes tearing and nose running from hot and spicy horseradish dip and to notice the smiles as they taste the sweet charoset. G-d also thought it would be a good idea to have them bake hard, crispy, flat bread that when eaten would leave tiny sharp shards in the pages of their little booklets for years and years to come. G-d said they would need to eat this hard, flat bread for seven straight days. The people actually asked, “Won’t we get sick of it?” G-d answered, “Yes, by the 4th day of the
holiday you will be sick of it, but don’t worry about that. By the next Passover, you will have forgotten all about the bland taste and effects it has on clogging up your digestive system. In fact,” God went on, “as each new Passover arrives, you will look forward to it with great eagerness: to buttered matzah, matzah kugel, matzah pizza and matzah brei!” Finally, God instructed the Israelites to make delicious foods whose taste and aroma would bring back warm memories of grandmas and great-grandmas, some of whom they may not have ever met. The Israelites said, “How are we going to do all of this? What if we mess it up? It’s too much for us to handle!” That’s when G-d said to them, “Do the best you can. If you don’t do it perfectly, that’s fine. If you mess up, that’s fine too. It’s not about doing it perfectly, it’s about listening to your heart and doing it in the first place!” Then God said these incredible words, “This first service is not the most important one – the second one is! And even more important is the third and then the fourth and so on. When you continue practicing these traditions year after year, I will know that this is part of your soul.” And the people did, or tried to do, exactly as G-d asked of them on that first seder. They did great, even if there were some mess-ups and imperfections. But it wasn’t until the next year, when the Israelites chose to celebrate these traditions on their own, that G-d became truly happy. The end. The function of that first seder is exactly like the function of the Bar or Bat mitzvah: it is an important first step, but it is the next steps that are most important. For all of the upcoming and past Bar and Bat Mitzvah students, please know that your Bar/Bat Mitzvah is/was just the first step along the path into your Jewish adulthood. I hope and pray you will always remember the good feelings of the hard work you put into your Bar/Bat Mitzvah, the warm feelings being surrounded by family, friends, clergy and congregation and the eternal feelings of Jewish traditions in your heart. But most importantly, I look forward to your day leaving its mark on your soul and watching you all take the next Jewish steps that you have chosen on your own. Wishing all of you a wonderful, joyous and memorable Pesach!

It seems that I start off my column every time with saying how busy we are planning great events and how hard my staff is at work, and this chapter is no different. As we prepare for a Springtime of exciting, educational and spiritual happenings, it again is such a busy time at CBI. While we really don’t feel the winter months down here, spring is a beautiful time of year and we have much to be grateful for in our daily lives. We will celebrate the Passover season with family and friends and remember the plight and the fortitude of our ancestors. It is my favorite time of year despite the separation we have of our families split between NY and here, we will make all efforts to spend this time together.
If you do not know him, look him up, his credentials are unmatched in the Jewish musical world and beyond. In addition, we will be bringing in even more Florida sunshine on April 6th with our major event of the season, “Here Comes the Sun.” It is so hard to describe what that night will look like but rest assured there will be guest stars, auction items, food and drinks, and a few surprises. This is an event for those of every age and tickets are on sale! We would love all of our families to attend and have a great time while supporting CBI in general, and a portion will be dedicated to our Youth Education fund, to help send our kids to programs and to Israel who otherwise would not be able to go except for your continued generosity.
Before that occurs, the staff has an amazing Purim season being prepared for our CBI community culminating with an outstanding “Queen” Purim Shpiel, led by our Musical Director, Cantor David Muchnick. Rehearsals are well underway and anyone who ever was involved in a production knows how much effort goes into making the performance a “One of a Kind” experience. You definitely do not want to miss this night!!! In between the two previously mentioned events, we will be presenting here at CBI, the Annual Stephen Dubov Concert honoring the memory of Cantor Dubov. This year we have reached the pinnacle of Jewish performers by bring in Mr. Craig Taubman on Sunday March 31st.
I have just touched on a few special events to go along with our daily and weekly programs and engaging Shabbat services. For those of you who have read this far I want you to email me the word, Beatles, to prove you read my column! Last time 3 people emailed me the correct name of our new puppy, Whisky. I am shooting for 10 responses, I know you can achieve this goal for me! As always, my family wishes you a spiritual and fun Purim, a wonderful and happy Passover season, and I am always available to meet with anyone from our CBI community to discuss ideas, thoughts, concerns, complaints or even compliments!

This spring has many opportunities for joyous celebration, and I would especially like to invite everyone to attend Friday night services on March 8 at 7:30 PM when Sisterhood members will be participating in the service. You will also see some Sisterhood members on Wednesday, March 20th helping with the "Queen" Purim Shpiel. Also, I am excited to announce that Sisterhood will be hosting a new event on Thursday evening, April 11 at 7:00 PM. As many of you may recall, Sisterhood hosted a Chocolate Seder last year to prepare for Passover. This year, we will be doing a different event by hosting a Women’s Seder to be led by Rabbi Alli Cohen with Associate Cantor Sarah Freudenberger. Just as Miriam and the Women rejoiced, so may we at our Seder. There will be singing, dancing, and ritual foods. You do not need to be a member of Sisterhood or even female to attend. You just need to want to experience the Power of the Prophetess, the Voices of Women, and the feel-
ing of Sisterhood and community. We will be using a special Women’s Seder Haggadah and learning about the empowerment of Women. Come hear about the Passover story from a Women’s perspective, including the four daughters. Please RSVP online at login.cbiboca.org/womensseder. We will not be able to accept walk-ins for this event. Please save the morning of Thursday, May 9 for our annual Mother’s Day Flower project. Last year, we assembled almost 390 flower bouquets with cards and delivered them for residents of nursing homes, shelters, and other facilities for Mother's Day. Our Brotherhood had a very productive and fun 2018. This year is going to be even better. First, we will be continuing Bagel and Bros every second Sunday of the month beginning at 8:30 am on the sidewalk to the right of where drop off for SLJ is. Bagel and Bros was a great addition to our programming in 2018, and we plan on having it for many years to come. We have bagels and coffee and partake in friendly talk with other guys who attend. This year we plan on stepping it up with guest speakers and focused discussions on topics that are relevant to us. We had a great discussion in the fall regarding security in our community, which was very well attended and informative. If you have any ideas for further discussion or an interesting speaker, please let me know. Last month Brotherhood participated in Mitzvah Day with a Beach Clean Up to do our part in repairing the world. A couple additional events of note that are scheduled this
year are March Madness Watch Party and our annual trip to see the Marlins play. Plus, we are working on other interesting and fun social events to bring everyone together. Stay tuned for more details. If you have participated in Brotherhood events in the past that is awesome. However, if you have not, now is the time. We are friendly, kind and down to earth guys who like to have fun and give back to our community. In addition, we have guys in all different age groups attending. GIVE BACK CHRISTMAS FEAST 26 CBI members, including Clergy, volunteered at The Give Back Christmas Feast on Christmas Day at the Town Center Mall. We provided Christmas meals for 425 people. There were volunteers from restaurants, stores and different organizations. The area in the Food Court was converted to an elegant dining room which included linen tablecloths, China, silverware, glasses and vases on each table were flowers.
Thank you to everyone who donated toys and food and a special thank you to Renee Nadel, Leslie Kantor, Susan Mayer and myself for wrapping the 80 gifts. Jeffrey Cannon’s office collected money and purchased gifts as well and Debby Glick and I wrapped them. Along with serving the meal our CBI team stayed to clean- up. Thank you everyone for making the day a perfect one for so many in our community!
Our guests arrived and were personally escorted to their table. Local restaurants cooked and provided the food and Volunteers served the dinners at each table with turkey, ham, brisket, six different vegetables, pasta, salad and bread and dessert. Children took pictures with Santa Claus and took home a gift.
LORI SKLAR MITZVAH DAY Our opening ceremonies began our day Our CBI President, Jeffrey Cannon, welcomed everyone to our 26th Lori Sklar Mitzvah Day! Thank you to the Mayor of Boca, Scott Singer, for the Proclamation. Thank you to City Commissioner Robert Weinroth for the Palm Beach County Proclamation. Thank you to our Clergy for our Opening Prayer. Thank you everyone for your donations. On campus we had so many activities including Sandwich Brigade, Mugs and Kisses for seniors at JFS, In Jacob’s Shoes, organizing toiletries in bags for shelters, homeless and Jewish War Veterans, Blood mobile, Blanket buddies for Chemo Angels, Shabbat Kits, Gently Used Books, Creating Blessing Bags for homeless and those in shelters.
Off Campus activities included Beach clean-up, Habitat for Humanity Building a home, Gleaning, Bowling and pizza party with The Place of Hope, JARC Bingo and pizza party and Cantor David Muchnick and Adult Choir going to Brighton Gardens. We had such a great day doing a Mitzvot in our Community. As Margaret Meade stated “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

CBI Engagement & Connection Congregation B’nai Israel is constantly creating opportunities for our members to feel connected. We take pride in our programs, creative events and soul nourishing services that are designed to make your life’s Jewish journey more meaningful! Our first program of the season, August’s-Back to Shul “Food Truck Frenzy” event welcomed back our entire congregation by providing an atmosphere for intergenerational reconnections with our clergy and CBI families.

November’s “Forever Fierce” fundraiser with Aly Raisman and local news anchor Ashleigh Walters blended our younger and older CBI family members and the community at large. Aly shared her experiences as a young woman, a gold medal gymnast, a Jew and a survivor; which culminated her journey of hardship, perseverance and success. Our outstanding and nationally recognized Social Action arm of CBI remains strong and gives our members many opportunities for Tikkun Olam- “repairing the world.” The 26th annual High Holy Day Food Drive collected close to 5,000 pounds of food. Feed the Community at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church has fed thousands for the past 35 years. This past December was our first year at The Give Back Christmas Feast at Town Center Mall. We helped serve 400 people a hot Christmas meal, plus donated hundreds of toys and gifts. Next year look for more Christmas Day programming. Our 26th Annual Lori Sklar Mitzvah Day continued to provide community projects for all our CBI families and supported local charities and organizations. If you like a more intimate experience please check out the WRJ Sisterhood, Mommy Minyan, CBI Brotherhood, our Adult Education classes plus our new Chavurot (interest groups). Our inspirational worship and festival events feature weekly musical Shabbat services and holiday celebrations, which attract hundreds of CBI members and community guests. If you haven’t had the chance, please come worship with our diverse Clergy which matches our wonderfully distinct congregation. After Shabbat services, stay for Kiddush and/or Oneg and continue to connect with our Clergy and CBI family. Don’t forget to register for our “Queen” Purim Shpiel and make your reservations for CBI’s Second Night Passover Seder. How long have you been at CBI? I’ve been at CBI for as long as I can remember, honestly. I remember my 2s and 3s classes like they were yesterday--just kidding! But for real, I’ve been here since I was around 1 year old, and I’ve loved every second of it.
What has been the most memorable part and personal benefit of being in BISY at CBI? The most memorable part has definitely been all the amazing opportunities I’ve had to lead services when I acted as BISY’s Religious and Cultural Vice President for two terms. Any way I can connect with the Jewish faith is so extremely valuable to me. Additionally, a huge personal benefit is definitely all the interpersonal connections and relationships I’ve been fortunate enough to make here, even if it’s simply a brief smile and wave to a someone at Shabbat services.
What school do you go to and in addition to BISY and NFTY are there any other activities you are involved in? I attend Spanish River High School in Boca Raton, where I’m an active member of Student Government, Yearbook, varsity lacrosse, DECA, National Honor Society, and the Students For Political Awareness Club. Outside of school, I participate in Rep. Ted Deutch’s Congressional Youth Cabinet.
What's the best thing that's happened to you this year? The best thing that’s happened to me this year (2018) has to be my experience at the URJ Kutz Camp (or Kutz for short). Kutz is a four-week summer camp in Warwick, NY, for NFTY’s youth leaders, offering immersive experiences, leadership labs, seminars, and more. At Kutz, I learned so much about myself, my Judaism, and my leadership skills,
while making lifelong friends and nurturing existing relationships at the same time.
What are you most excited about now that you are going to be President of NFTY? I’m most excited to have the opportunity to inspire others to lead. You have no idea how humbling and gratifying it is to see my peers so excited and engaged in leadership, and to be able to have that kind of influence on someone is something I could never take for granted.
What's the most important thing I should know about you? Whether it be culinary, travel-related, or anything in between, I love trying new things! Anything to get out of my comfort zone has my name all over it. In fact, I hope to go skydiving as soon as I’m of age to do so!
What do you do for fun? When I’m not studying or doing schoolwork, I can usually be found listening to music, going record shopping, hanging out with my two beautiful dogs whom I love very much, traveling, planning services and writing divrei Torah as the current NFTY-STR Religious and Cultural Vice President, going to museums, rewatching Ferris Bueller’s Day Off for the 5,767,935th time, going for runs, eating dried mango, and (of course) doing the NFTY!
What are you looking forward to in 2019? In 2019, I’m looking forward to learning as much as I can about the world around me and forming new friendships as I do so!
NADEL CENTER FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION CBI celebrated Shabbat with an extra dose of “kindness” on Friday, January 11th. Over 100 children with their families gathered for an early dinner followed by a lively Tot Shabbat service led by Rabbi Silvers. The evening was filled with singing and stories on the importance of the Jewish value of “chesed” or loving-kindness. After services, the children and the Rabbis created a “kindness wall” together by putting each of their hand-prints on a lovely tree mural created by the ArtNest Delray team. The mural will be hung in the preschool halls as a constant reminder of the importance of choosing kindness above all.
