Shalom Everyone!
Not long ago, we were sitting at synagogue reflecting on our year. We spent a whole month prior to the High Holidays beginning our introspection and then began the Jewish year of 5779 with Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. We sought out the sounds of the shofar to awaken us from our slumber and dipped apples in honey to begin the year with sweetness. Shortly after, we bore our souls asking God for atonement. We engaged in fasting and thoughtful reflection while we hoped that our prayers, repentance, and tzedakah might temper God’s decree. Then, we entered the happiest holiday on the Jewish calendar: Sukkot. We built our temporary dwellings, looked up at the sky through our leafy roofs, and waved the lulav and etrog. Finally, we ended our High Holidays by dancing around the syna-
gogue at Simchat Torah, where we ended and immediately began the Torah again. Throughout all of this time we looked inwardly and attempted to fulfill the commandments prescribed to us by God. Now that we are well-past those more focused opportunities to engage in reflection and tzedakah, how are we doing? The High Holidays are barely in the rear-view mirror; have we started to fulfill any of resolutions we promised ourselves? Well, the good news is that we have plenty of opportunities to re-engage with those ideas to improve ourselves and our community! In the coming months we will have many chances to help support CBI and the whole community around us. We will continue to have opportunities to engage in tzedakah.
The challenge is of course taking the time out of our busy schedules to give of our time, energy and money. Once someone made the decision to give, then it was up to that person to decide how they want give. That's why both giving tzedakah and the manner in which we do it are equally important. Let’s not let all of our hard work from the High Holy Days go to waste. Let's find ways to act and engage in tzedakah!

Beginning at the age of 2 Aly Raisman began her Olympic training which culminated with her Olympic success of 3 gold medals, 2 silver medals, and a bronze medal, while captain and member of the both “Fierce Five” in 2012 and the “Final Five” in the 2016 games. Aly has brought the same passion to her post-Olympic life as an American Jew, a woman and a driving force in bringing communal awareness to the issues of childhood abuse. On November 8th, we are excited that Aly will be here at Congregation B’nai Israel to share with us, what makes this 5’2” woman so Fierce!! Speaking of “Fierce Five," our own fierce five: Congregation B’nai Israel clergy, Rabbi Silvers, Rabbi Keller, Rabbi Cohen, Cantor Muchnick and Associate CantorFreudenberger, made this past High Holy Day season one of spirituality, meaning and introspection. I know from the feedback from so many members, these services were the best in many years and a gratuitous thank you to our wonderful clergy. I also want to publicly thank everyone who contributed to making the Yamim Noraim (Days of Awe), Sukkot and Simchat Torah so momentous. To borrow a phrase from Aly,
you all “Stuck” the Landing. And finally, for beloved membership: I hope each and every one of you this upcoming year allows Congregation B’nai Israel to play an important role in your life. As the High Holy Days come to an end, I am hoping you continue to understand the importance the synagogue plays in your life, and specifically, Congregation B’nai Israel. Perhaps just as importantly, I hope you realize what we need to do to maintain the linkage of Judaism, as we together build the bridge to educate our youth and offer meaningful programs to all our members. So, lets resolve this year to make a commitment to become immersed in CBI, and win a gold medal in the “All-Around.” Make this year a year of involvement and commitment at Congregation B'nai Israel. Wow! Please read on… I am celebrating my 4th year as the Executive Director of CBI and my 20th year as an ED in the non-profit world. It is truly amazing how time does fly! It also seemed like 6 months ago (it actually was) when we chose Aly Raisman as our featured speaker for our CBI Talk Series for her spirituality, her determination, her story and causes. As November 8th approaches, I am so happy to say this event looks like our most successful one ever, a phrase I strive to say every year. This young woman is a national presence, and keeps her religion, her passion and her drive for her causes close to her heart. She will speak on a variety of topics and all questions will be pre – selected. I am proud that we were able to have her come and speak to our Congregation as her message is widespread and timely. We only have a few seats remaining so please secure your tickets online today!
The end of the calendar year also brings CBI’s incredible social action event of Feed the Community (FKA Feed the Hungry) in collaboration with Ebenezer Baptist Church. I know you will be reading much more about it on other pages in this Shelanu, but I had to mention this very important event which helps signifies us as the “Congregation with a Conscience.” Also, during this time is the wonderful celebratory holiday of Chanukah. It is a great time to spend with family and close friends while learning the true meaning of the candles and the story behind the symbolism of the Menorah. So once again from the entire Allen family, which has added another grandchild in NY, James Michael Allen, on August 25th, to your family, have a wonderful holiday season and come visit us and our terrific clergy. My door is always open for suggestions, questions, complaints, and even compliments.

I would like to start by introducing myself to the CBI congregation and Boca community! Dena and I are thrilled to be a part of this thriving and vibrant community and we so look forward to experiencing all that CBI has to offer and meet all of you in the coming months (if we haven’t already done so during the recent High Holy Days)! Our High Holy Day experience has been nothing short of wonderful and welcoming! From my entire family we wish each of you a very happy, healthy and sweet New Year!
Meanwhile, other Jews were not responding so well to the changes and the lures of this pagan culture. These Jews saw that these changes in culture would affect the future of Judaism and could lead to its destruction. They began to organize an effort to keep more Jews from becoming Hellenized. This led to tension and “civil unrest” in the Jewish community. Antiochus became aware of this heated situation and chose to abandon the usual passive approach for a more aggressive solution to Hellenizing the Jews of Israel.
Since this is a Shelanu issue that will discuss the months of November and December, which will include (drum roll please) – Chanukah, I thought I would write about a little history you all might find a little interesting!
Antiochus then ordered two decrees that would change history. He ordered the desecration of the Temple in Jerusalem by placing idols in it and by sacrificing pigs on the altar. Next, he forbade the weekly reading of Torah. For many Jews, including some of those who fell for the Greek way of life, things had gone too far. It was clear to most, that if left unchecked, this would lead to the end of Judaism. The time was right for the Jews to do something unprecedented: wage a war in order to defend their religious rights.
A Little Chanukah History There are so many events and celebrations that occur in November and December, both at our synagogue and in our homes. I wonder if the significance of Chanukah gets lost or overlooked amidst all the fanfare. Chanukah commemorates an incredibly important historical and religious event that should not be forgotten. The reason behind the gifts, the dreidels, the latkes and even the menorah, is the fact that Chanukah celebrates the Jews winning a war—fought over religious freedom. Some say that the war that Judah and his army (the Maccabbees) fought against the Greeks was the first ideological war in history! About 2,200 years ago, Antiochus, the ruler of the Seleucid Empire, tried to integrate Jews into the Greek religion and the Greek way of life, a process known as Hellenization. During that time, Hellenization was successfully sweeping across Europe, Asia and Africa. At first, the efforts at Hellenizing the Jews were no different than in other places: using non-violent and persuasive techniques to win people over. The Greek styles were seen as fun and trendy. Some Jews adapted to this new, Greek way of life by changing their clothing and hairstyles to match that of the Greeks. Soon after, these same Jews found themselves learning about Greek religion and culture, which included praying to Greek gods and participating in immoral hedonistic behavior.
After an intense battle, history records that the Jews won the war and were able to reclaim the Temple, light the menorah and return to the public reading of Torah. Yet, the greatest victory of that moment, and what we should celebrate during the holiday of Chanukah, was that our people were willing to fight and risk their lives to preserve morality, education and faith in one God. So, I leave you with two Chanukah questions: For whom are we responsible? To whom are we responsible? Maybe the best way to celebrate Chanukah is to be ready to stand up for and fight for what we know is right. Happy November and December Holidays (especially Chanukah)!

ALY RAISMAN GOLD MEDAL GYMNAST Aly Raisman, team captain of the gold medal winning U.S. Olympic Women’s Gymnastics teams in 2012 and 2016, is the second most decorated American gymnast of all-time with six total Olympic medals. The most decorated U.S. gymnast at the 2012 Games, Raisman captured the hearts of millions as she became the first American gymnast to win gold in the floor exercise. One of only two U.S. gymnasts to make back-to-back Olympic teams in more than 15 years, she helped guide the team to gold and landed a silver medal performance in the All-Around competition at the 2016 Games.

class. No one could have predicted then that sixteen years later, she'd be standing on an Olympic podium, having achieved her dreams. In her New York Times best-selling memoir, – Fierce – she shares the highs and lows of her journey. Raisman’s road to success was full of hard work, perseverance, and victories, but not without its hardships. Aly faced many obstacles, from naysayers who said she'd never make it in gymnastics to classmates who shamed her for her athletic body to a devastating betrayal of trust.
A BORN LEADER A leader on and off the floor, Raisman
uses her platform to promote positive body image and encourages everyone to be comfortable and confident in their own skin. Inspired by an army of survivors, Raisman continues her advocacy for systematic changes within the sport of gymnastics and efforts to help to eradicate sexual abuse in youth sports. She serves as a nationwide leader for the “MeToo” movement and recently led more than 140 survivors in receiving the Arthur Ashe Award at the 2018 ESPY Awards during the evening’s most emotional moment. “To all the survivors out there, don't let anyone rewrite your story. Your truth does matter. You matter. And you are not alone,” she said in her moving speech.

In October, Sisterhood members attended our dessert reception, participated in a walk to fight breast cancer and a pre-walk decorating event for our team participants, and sponsored a non-partisan presentation on the ballot initiatives by the League of Women Voters. Also, the Southeast District Biennial for Women of Reform Judaism took place in Miami making October a very busy month for us. We have a lot of fun events planned for the next few months, and I hope to see many old friends and some new faces. If you have not attended one of our events previously or if it’s been awhile since you have been able to attend, we will be happy to welcome you. Last year’s Zumba with the Rabbi was such a hit that we are planning to Zumba on November 15 with a handsome instructor and of course, our Rabbi Cohen. Participants should wear athletic clothing and comfortable workout shoes. We will be having healthy refreshments, which will include fruit, cheese and crackers, as well as cookies (energy for Zumba), chocolate (a basic food group) and wine (to relax). We will also be providing water and coffee. Watch your CBI Insider for sign-up details. If you have never tried Zumba, this is a great opportunity to do so. For those who may just want to watch the class or listen to the music, you are

welcome to come and just hang-out with us. Following the class and time permitting, we will have a very brief Sisterhood business meeting. In December, we will be having our annual Chanukah party. Again, watch your CBI Insider for details. Speaking of Chanukah, our gift shop has a variety of merchandise for your holiday shopping. We have lovely hostess gifts, jewelry, children’s toys, and a large selection of Judaica items, including Menorahs. Sisterhood members are entitled to a discount. Remember when you shop at our Judaica Shop, you help to support our Sisterhood programs. Did you know that our shop donates a set of Shabbat candlesticks for each bat mitzvah and a Kiddush cup for each bar mitzvah and that we provide items to our preschool students to help celebrate holidays, such as dreidels? Also, did you know that Sisterhood provides “goody” bags when our teens travel to events? Where else, besides our Judaica Shop, can you shop, get a discount, and do a mitzvah all at the same time? L’Shanah Tovah CBI family. Here’s wishing you all health, happiness and peace this year. We are more excited than ever about the upcoming year at CBI’s Brotherhood. Over the last year our Board has focused on bringing in new members, and the results have been outstanding. We couldn’t be more pleased, and we look forward to keeping the momentum going. On September 6th we started off the year with our annual kick-off event at Duffy’s. As usual, Barry Glick planned a wonderful night for everyone in attendance. We watched football, ate lots of good food and got a chance to see old friends and meet new ones. On September 23rd we hosted our annual sukkah building event where 25 Brotherhood members got together to build our sukkah. This event keeps getting better and better as this year our sukkah builders included dads with kids in SLJ and NCECE as well as our empty nester dads and Rabbis Silvers, Keller and Cohen. After the sukkah build was complete, we paid homage to two long time Brotherhood members and diehard Sukkah builders who are no longer with us, Jason Beame and Arthur Bowe. Our SLJ students enjoyed learning more about Sukkot as they asked us questions about why we build the Sukkah. Later in the afternoon our SLJ and NCECE families put the finishing touches on the Sukkah with all of their deco-
rations in preparation for our Sukkot services. The Brotherhood returned to the Sukkah the following Wednesday evening as we continued our Sukkot celebration with our annual Bourbon n Bros event, sponsored by the Jewish National Fund. Another great time was had by all in attendance as we ate delicious food and taste tested an amazing variety of bourbons, while we learned a lot about JNF’s mission to strengthen and help Israel. Keep your eyes open for Bagels and Bros every month and many other events that the Brotherhood will be having this year. As we’ve said many times before, please come out and join us. If you have attended before, welcome back. But if this will be your first event, myself or we will personally make sure you have a great time. Over the last year we have made many new friends at CBI through the Brotherhood. That’s because new guys are joining us. School for Living Judaism Welcome back to the SLJ. Our 6th-12th graders had a great first night back. We enjoyed pizza dinner, seeing old friends and meeting new friends, hearing Rabbi Keller blow the shofar and of course, learning! Rabbi Keller, Rabbi Cohen, Kim Beame and Cheryl Epstein made it to every classroom to welcome the students back. SPOTLIGHT Rachel Smith
Growing up in Livingston, NJ my family belonged to the same synagogue from the time I was born through the time I became a young adult. I attended preschool, Hebrew school and became a Bat Mitzvah there. The importance of a Jewish education and being a part of a Jewish community was instilled in me by my parents at a young age. When my family decided to move to Boca Raton, FL my Sophomore year of high school, we immediately joined a temple and I enrolled in Confirmation class. This really helped me to feel connected in a new town and helped introduce me to lots of new friends. Fast forward through college at Emory University, graduate school at NYU and 10 years as an elementary school teacher in both NYC and Miami and I found myself back in Boca Raton. It’s been 6 wonderful years of marriage to my husband Neil and I love the family we have built with our two beautiful children Juliet (4) and Bennett (17 months). When I was pregnant with Juliet, I signed up for my first Mommy and Me class and was immediately welcomed into the warm and beautiful community that is CBI. Some of my best friends today I met in that class. After Juliet was born, we had her baby naming at the temple, continued taking classes, enrolled her in the pre-school and became

temple members. I joined the Parent Organization Board 4 years ago and was yet again introduced to a group of strong, independent and truly amazing women. When I was asked to be the NCECE Chairperson this year I was flattered and excited. I could not wait to help lead this amazing group of women at a place that has become a second home to my family. I love the opportunities I get to work with the temple, clergy, pre-school administration, teachers and parents. And I love being able to help plan some of the events and experiences my children are having at school every day. I have met amazing people and feel so immersed in such a tight-knit welcoming Jewish Community. I feel very lucky to be a part of CBI and look forward to serving as the NCECE Chairperson this year! I have met so many wonderful, warm & genuine people in my time here and I look forward to meeting more. If you see me around please say hello, I would love to meet you too!

Friends at Congregation B’nai Israel. My name is Tadd Schwab, I am a member at CBI. I am also a member of the board of the World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ) the global arm of our Reform Movement known here in North America as the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ). Established in London in 1926, the World Union has grown to represent 1.8 million Reform, Progressive and Liberal Jews across six continents, seven regions, 50 countries and 1,200 communities. You may ask why I am writing today. I want to tell you about some wonderful opportunities you may want to take advantage of. Let’s talk about travel for all kinds of purposes. In today’s world people travel at a young age. We as parents and grandparents encourage our kids to connect with other Jews especially at holiday time. College kids spend time studying abroad and the same is true, they want to connect. In today’s global world it is not unrealistic that we work and live for a period of time overseas. When living overseas, we need a synagogue we can relate to. For many of us traveling to other countries is a passion. Connecting to a Reform Congregation or to Reform Jews is important. Perhaps finding a Congregation for Shabbat is not your cup of tea, but finding a friend in the far corners of the world to have a cup of coffee or a glass of wine can be a rewarding experience. Connecting any time can be very meaningful. The World Union “Finding a Community” app found in the App Store (on your iPhone not iPad)
In the 21st century you can find Reform Jews anywhere. Here are some examples: Bangkok, Thailand. Thailand Progressive Jewish Community was founded in 2014. Shabbat and holiday services are conducted by visiting rabbis or lay leaders. They hope to eventually have their own synagogue building and religious school as they grow. The Community is made up of multi-national and multi-cultural Jews who come together to create progressive and inclusive religious services and social events. Lisbon, Portugal. The World Union is bringing Judaism back to the country after more than 500 years. Congregation Ohel Yaakov joined the EUPJ in 2016. It is the only Ashkenazi and liberal congregation in Portugal. The congregation has a collection of Torah scrolls brought by the Polish Jewish refugees running from the Nazi regime including a part of a Torah scroll, which survived Kristallnacht. Started by Polish Jews, the congregation also seeks to integrate the descendants of the B’nai Anusim, those Jews who were forced to convert during the inquisition and are now in search of their Jewish roots and identity. My wife Sandy and I personally have enjoyed visits to congregations in Melbourne and Sydney in Australia, London, Berlin, Madrid, and coffee and a visit with Temple Presidents in Strasbourg, France, and Lisbon, Portugal. A few years ago we had one great experience in Budapest, Hungary. In Budapest they have two
progressive congregations. We went to one congregation to celebrate Simchat Torah. It was a wonderful experience. We later met Rabbi Raj of the other congregation for a tour of the Jewish part of town. It concluded with coffee and cake at his niece’s cafe. Our own Robin Siegal and her husband Jeff spent a shabbat this summer at our Congregation in Budapest with Rabbi Ferenc Raj. Robin connected using the Find a Community App. Perhaps you do not know that Rabbi Cohen as a student traveled to Belarus to conduct a Passover Seder. This is part of a program with the World Union and Hebrew Union College. My wife Sandy and I arrange to meet someone from local congregations wherever we go. It adds a lot of meaning to our travel. As you can see, you to have the opportunity to make a connection while studying, working, or traveling overseas. As security can be an issue, contacting the congregation with the “Find a Community” app makes it very easy to plan a visit. I hope you found this article interesting.
