A LETTER FROM RABBI RONY S. KELLER

Shanah Tovah Everyone,

I hope that you all had a wonderful, safe and fun summer I hope that you found time to relax, rejuvenate, spend time as a family, and maybe even get out of the Florida summer heat Now, as both the Jewish New Year and the school year will once again begin soon, we look forward to seeing our synagogue bustling with people excited to learn, study, celebrate and pray.

This year, as I’m sure you’ll agree, has been painstakingly challenging to endure as a Jewish people As we were concluding the High Holy Days last year and joyously dwelling in our Sukkot, the morning of October 7th changed our lives forever The families living along the Gaza Envelope and those who attended the Nova Festival were viciously attacked. Since then, we’ve needed to defend beliefs, our children and our Judaism as antisemitic events have increased 365% since the attack on October 7th.

Even amidst all of these challenges, we are Am Yisrael, the nation of Israel The word Israel means “God wrestler”, and so we continue to wrestle social media, anti-Israel sentiment, and all those who seek to undermine or destroy us This wrestling is difficult: it requires that we consistently support one another, know what’s happening in Israel, and of course, remain spiritually connected as the holy community that we are at Congregation B’nai Israel.

A new Jewish year is approaching As is with most beginnings, we anticipate this one with hope and excitement Our expectations are hyper-focused on good things to come, and finding ways to appreciate family, friends and our congregation. May this be a year of wrestling and reflecting. May we find times to reflect on the year that has passed and on the year to come. May we continue to be wrestlers, carrying with us the heaviness of this past year and simultaneously finding beauty in that wrestling, so that we become an even stronger and more united people

Lisa, Aviv, Leor and I wish you all a meaningful and sweet start to the New Year

TO TAYLOR SWIFT ON SUPPORTING ISRAEL

Dear Taylor,

As a Swiftie, I know you have the ability to go visit, to learn, to see for yourself. Please don’t close your eyes to the truth

You don’t know anything about me, but as a Swiftie for a decade and a half – I feel like I know a bit about you and your heart. I have something difficult to say, but first, I want to begin with how much I appreciate you. As you can see from the picture of my choice outfit for our “Superbowl Shabbat” themed service tonight, I’m a fan of yours Thank you for the way you use your lyrics and life to teach the world, especially young women, about the importance of owning their feelings, dreams, and potential As a rabbi, I have utilized your powerful lyrics, notable comments, and quotes to teach many young people the values of self-care, resiliency, forgiveness, and hope.

I’m writing, though, because so many people – seeing my shirt and knowing I’m a fan – have questioned how I can still support an artist who doesn’t support my community. You see, many of my congregants are struggling with the idea that you went to a Gaza fundraiser and that you haven’t yet spoken out about the need to bring the Israelis being held hostage home Seeing everything you’ve stood for in the past, I know you have a good heart and good intentions I believe you didn’t intend to fund or support Hamas. That you want to do “what’s right,” and when it comes to Israel, it has somehow become unclear what the right thing to do is or who the “good” guys are.

This article was originally published in The Times of Israel on February 9, 2024 The content is shared here with permission, and all rights remain with the original publisher. For the complete article and more from The Times of Israel, please visit their website at timesofisrael com

I’d love to simplify it for you, but it’s not simple. Horrible things have been done by all involved because both terrorism and war are horrific And yet, there is one side more innocent than the other Israel sometimes loses its balance on the tightrope it walks And when its army of young people encounter and sometimes have to do things they can’t speak of – these soldiers – and the nation as a whole – live it all again night after night. They hold each other accountable and try, even when shattered on the floor, to learn from what they’ve seen, wishing they had known more.

Yes, I’m playing with your lyrics to make a point

Innocence isn’t really about being perfect It isn’t about never causing harm. It is, however, about never wanting to. It is about being tortured by your mistakes, not proud of your cruelty. So, when trying to figure out who to support and stand with - I’m asking you to examine the hopes and dreams of both Israel and Hamas. Look at the stated reasons for existence. Ask if they regret or celebrate the warpath to determine innocence

Some Facts:

“INNOCENCE ISN’T REALLY ABOUT BEING PERFECT. IT ISN’T ABOUT NEVER CAUSING HARM. IT IS, HOWEVER, ABOUT NEVER WANTING TO.”

Hamas, in its charter, clearly states the desire to obliterate Israel and push every Jewish person out of the land

Israel, in its Declaration of Independence, makes it clear that the nation strives to ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants, irrespective of religion, race, or sex. Israel’s declaration of independence also appeals to both Arab inhabitants of the land and neighboring Arab states, asking for peace, to live together in mutual respect and shared benefits. When members of Hamas commit acts of violence against Jews, they and their families are rewarded with large sums of money and new apartments to live in. Hamas celebrates vicious acts of terror

When Israelis commit acts of violence against Palestinians, they are brought up on charges, made to stand trial, and held accountable for unlawful actions

When Hamas kills Israelis, they do so with horrific acts of violence, sexual assault, and mental and physical acts of torture

When the IDF engages in war, it goes out of its way to try and warn innocent civilians and avoid their deaths. I’m not saying they are always successful – they are not. War is hard. Civilians die. But they are not targeted and tortured. The IDF strives for the preservation of innocent lives.

These are just a few reasons why Israel’s string of lights is still bright to me.

Life was beautiful and easy when I believed in the good of everyone, and everyone believed in each other’s potential to make peace and live side by side But we’re past the lunchbox days The monsters have caught up with us all And yet, only one side longs for its innocence Only Israel is shattered by the loss of all life Hamas, and its followers, celebrate and glorify it

There is so much more to say, to try and help you understand my – and my community’s – pain and hopes, but I don’t know that any of it matters in today’s age of hate and lies. I could sit here and run through a bunch of historical facts and realities on the ground – to try and explain Israel’s right to exist and defend herself. I’d love to wax poetic about how portraying the Jewish nation as the big bad aggressor negates both the historical truth and modern reality that Israel is little David, up against the Goliath of the Arab World While I myself have been known to criticize Israeli politicians and right-wing government actions, I could try to explain the difference between criticizing those in power and negating an entire nation’s right to exist I could discuss how no other nation in the world is held to the standards Israel is and how that is directly rooted in antisemitism Yes, there is so much I could say to try and give you a glimpse into my heart- but I’d rather ask that you examine the heart of both groups and be honest about what you see.

Yes, Israel’s current war against Hamas terror is complicated, difficult, and even – at times –disappointing. But Israel is defending her right to exist, and her true character is clear. Look at her essential principles and her heart, her stated intentions and hopes, and her societal debate over how to proceed, and it becomes clear that Israel is, at least by your song’s standards, still an innocent Hamas is not And Hamas alone controls Gaza

You are smart enough and have the ability to go visit, to learn, to see for yourself So please don’t close your eyes to the truth

SHABBAT SHUVAH

This is the Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur that is referred to as "The Sabbath of Return"

TIME FOR MEMORIAL

The Erev Yom Kippur service begins with the Kol Nidre prayer, a powerful declaration that awakens our souls as we prepare for the most solemn day of the Jewish year

YIZKOR

We join as a community to support one another in honoring the memories of our loved ones Yizkor is a memorial prayer service that takes place on Yom Kippur. The service includes prayers for the deceased and is a time for the community to remember those who have passed away through prayer, silence, and the recitation of names

NEILAH

Neilah literally means “closing” and refers to the symbolic closing of the Gates of Heaven and, hence, God’s willingness to hear the prayers of the Jewish people As the sun sets, we invite you to conclude the Day of Atonement with the final sounding of the shofar

HIGH HOLY DAYS FAMILY ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Shalom and Chag Sameach

SLJ Families!

I am so excited to celebrate the High Holy Days with all the wonderful CBI families and youth once again this year! The highlight of my celebration is always the Pre-K-4 Junior Congregation services with the one-ofa-kind Miss Susan leading our services, and the fabulous SLJ staff helping to run activities for the students I hope to see all our SLJ students participate in Junior Congregation services We are so excited to bring back our Family Prayer Experience, T’fillah and Tikkun, for families with children in 3rd grade and older following the main Rosh Hashanah service on October 3rd T’fillah and Tikkun offers families the opportunity to immerse themselves in the values and significance of the High Holy Days, all while engaging in social action activities.

While our youth group programming takes a pause during the High Holy Days, I cherish the opportunity to get to know our Religious School students and families through prayer and learning during the Days of Awe. I look forward to continue building relationships with the children and teens throughout the year!

During the High Holy Days, we take a moment to relax from our overworked, over-scheduled, and overtired days. Connecting with our families is a restorative activity that brings a new meaning to the High Holy Days: the importance of strengthening our familial relationships With many schools giving time off to observe the High Holy Days, you may wonder what you can do to teach these values and create lasting memories for years to come We invite you to enrich your home with hands-on activities rooted in tradition These experiences not only bring the family together, but also deepen your connection to Judaism as you transform your home into a space of learning and celebration Let’s embrace these moments to create lasting memories and strengthen our Jewish identity as a community Read on for a compilation of suggestions to enhance your time together!

Book of Remembrance

Four times a year, during Yizkor (Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Passover, and Shavuot), we take time to formally honor our ancestors and loved ones who have passed This act of remembrance, particularly at the High Holy Days, is our promise to those who have died that we will forever remember them. It is also an example to future generations of what it means to remember, and of the critical nature of remembrance in linking one generation to the next

Congregation B’nai Israel’s Book of Remembrance is distributed for Yizkor Memorial Services on the holiest day of the year, Yom Kippur. Our Book of Remembrance is also presented in an electronic format, and can be found on our website.

A LETTER FROM

OUR RELIGIOUS SCHOOL

Dear Families,

Shalom and welcome back to the Barry Ira Graff School of Living Judaism (SLJ)!

As we gather together to begin a new school year, our hearts are filled with the spirit of renewal and reflection that characterizes the High Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. These sacred moments in our calendar invite us to pause, contemplate, and set intentions for the year ahead

At SLJ, we embrace this opportunity not only to learn and grow academically, but also to deepen our understanding of our Jewish heritage and values. The start of a new school year is a reminder of the importance of education in shaping our minds and nurturing our souls

During this season of introspection, we are inspired by the teachings of Teshuvah (repentance), Tefillah (prayer), and Tzedakah (acts of righteousness). These values guide us in fostering a supportive community where every student is valued, every question is encouraged, and every lesson learned is a step toward personal and spiritual growth.

Our dedicated faculty and staff are committed to creating an environment where curiosity flourishes, knowledge is cherished, and connections to our traditions are strengthened Together, we will embark on a journey of exploration and discovery, rooted in the rich tapestry of Jewish wisdom and heritage.

As partners in your child's educational journey, we invite you to join us in embracing the spirit of the High Holy Days Let us approach this new school year with open hearts, a commitment to learning, and a shared determination to make a positive difference in our world.

May this year be filled with blessings, learning opportunities, and moments of joy for your family and our entire school community

Democracy is a guiding principle in American and Jewish life. It is our responsibility to show up and have our vote counted Our tradition teaches us that we have a collective responsibility to choose our leaders. Rabbi Yitzchak taught that “a ruler is not to be appointed unless the community is first consulted” (Talmud, B’rachot 55a)

Civic engagement through voting is a fundamental way to be involved in the welfare of our communities Elections have a real impact on the everyday lives of every single one of us, for the governments we elect develop policies and programs with local, national, and international implications.

Get Out the Vote is a nonpartisan campaign with the goal of reaching out to congregants to encourage them to get involved in the political process The purpose of Get Out the Vote is to strengthen democracy, remove barriers to voting, and ensure every eligible American can show up as a voter in the 2024 elections

As Jews and American citizens, we have an obligation to participate in the elections Whether you intend to vote in person on election day, or vote-bymail, be sure you have a plan in place. Join our nonpartisan campaign to ensure all have an equal say in decisions that impact our lives!

VOTE-BY-MAIL RENEWAL:

All registered voters can vote by mail if you can't get to a polling place in person for Early Voting or on Election Day Florida law requires you to renew your request for a Vote by Mail ballot in 2024, if you have not renewed your request since the 2022 election If you are sent a vote-by-mail ballot, you can still vote in person if you choose by returning the vote-by-mail ballot at the polling place Make sure you have requested your vote-by-mail ballot at votepalmbeach.gov/Voters/Vote-By-Mail.

BROTHERHOOD

The Brotherhood of Congregation B’nai Israel is a welcoming group of men of all ages rooted in friendship, connections, and community both within our synagogue and the broader community around us

From informal get-togethers at local restaurants to cleaning up the beach at Spanish River Park, Brotherhood makes a difference by providing educational, cultural, and religious programs We support youth and Religious School activities, coordinate social action mitzvahs, and host fun social events where our community can come together for camaraderie and support

Through our dynamic social, educational, and networking events, we also help provide financial support for synagogue programs and causes Historically, Brotherhood helped fund the courtyard canopy, provided a scholarship for a student’s confirmation class trip to Israel, and donated gifts and sports equipment to children through our community partners. Brotherhood also presents each B’nai Mitzvah with a gift to

celebrate this milestone In addition to our ongoing efforts, we are excited to support CBI’s new Am Yisrael Chai Auxiliary, which aims to create immersive experiential opportunities that link all levels of education and participation congregationaly to Israel

Dear CBI Family,

AM YISRAEL CHAI

As we gather for the High Holy Days, a time of reflection, renewal, and community, we are delighted to introduce to you CBI’s newest Israel Auxiliary: Am Yisrael Chai We are honored to serve as your Co-Chairs and to share with you the vision and mission that inspired us to take on this role

The decision to co-chair Am Yisrael Chai was born from our shared passion for nurturing the next generation within our congregation and fostering a deep congregational-wide connection with Israel The name "Am Yisrael Chai" embodies the enduring vitality and connection of the Jewish people. We exist because Israel exists.

An auxiliary like Am Yisrael Chai is essential because it strengthens our connection to Israel, fostering a sense of belonging and identity among our youth and community members It serves as a platform for us to support Israel, engage with Judaism, and explore our heritage.

By involving our CBI community in meaningful activities and programs, we aim to instill a deep sense of pride and responsibility towards our congregation and the State of Israel Your membership to this auxiliary reflects not only your dedication to our shared values, but also your passion for enhancing our community's relationship with Israel With first-hand testimonials, special speakers, lunch + learns, school programming, and community engagement, we will explore innovative ways to integrate Israel into every facet of CBI

Looking ahead, we envision Am Yisrael Chai as a beacon of creativity, inclusivity, and inspiration We plan to implement diverse programs that cater to the varied interests and talents of our youth and community members Our goal is to create an environment where every member feels valued, heard, and empowered to make a positive impact on our synagogue community, strengthening our ties with Israel in meaningful and transformative ways

We are excited about the journey ahead and are committed to making Am Yisrael Chai a cornerstone of our congregation We invite you to join us in supporting and nurturing this initiative, as we work together to build a brighter future for our youth, our community, and our connection to Israel. To become a member of Am Yisrael Chai and to learn more about upcoming opportunities and community involvement, please send us an email at ayc@cbiboca org

Wishing you all a happy and healthy new year.
