Yizkor means “may [God] remember,” from the Hebrew root zachor. It is recited four times a year in the synagogue: on Yom Kippur, the end of Sukkot, the end of Passover and on Shavuot. Today, we publish lists of those who are remembered by congregants, which are distributed at the Yizkor services. It is during these services that we yearn for those we loved, we long to have them close to us for yet another challenge in our lives, yet another joy, yet another precious moment together. God be with us as our hearts are broken; console us at this hour. May the memory of our departed loved ones endure among us as a blessing. Rabbi Rony Keller

Cemetery Arrangements for CBI Members

• Congregation B’nai Israel has a dedicated section at Star of David in North Lauderdale. • Star of David is a modern, clean facility that has easily accessible plots, peaceful water and paved walkways. It also allows upright headstones (while others only allow markers). The North Lauderdale location provides a convenient location for those who may be traveling in from local airports. • Because we have purchased these plots as a group, we are able to offer our members and their families a discounted rate. • Services may be held at CBI or at the Star of David Funeral Chapel.

the Meaning of Kaddish The Kaddish Prayer so warmly, so inexorably, woven into the tapestry of mourning is essentially not a prayer for our departed. It is a prayer in praise of God. Not one word of the Aramaic, in which it is written, has even the slightest connection with cessation of life. Having its origins in the days of the great assemblies of Rabbis, the creators of the Mishna and Talmud, the prayer was originally recited at the conclusion of the study of a portion of sacred writing. Gradually, the practice developed of reciting the Kaddish at the conclusion of a great scholar’s life as he completed “his own book of life with its sacred teachings.” Soon, however, the alchemy of equality worked its leaven into this practice so that by the Tenth Century it became the custom to recite the Kaddish at the termination of all persons’ lives. No experience in Jewish life today equals the emotional magnetism of the duty to recite Kaddish for a lost member of the family. The sentimental associations strike deep and meaningful roots and reflect Judaism’s sage counsel regarding death and immortality. As we praise God in life, for life, so do we praise God in life for death, the necessary complement of life. It is not merely that man has a soul, man is a soul. Immortality is not a place, it is an imperishable state of being. The real is spiritual and the spiritual is real. At the very moment when what is most difficult is to thank God, Judaism says extol His name, sing of His wonderful ways, thank Him for the privilege of sharing a life. At a time when one’s faith in God is most challenged, the Kaddish says to us: reaffirm your faith in Him, in your world, and in your ability to see beyond the day’s pain. Tomorrow is never without hope. For life itself is Kadosh-holy. MEDITATION UPON KINDLING THE YAHRZEIT LIGHT I give thanks for the blessing of life, of companionship, and of memory. Though my loved one is beyond my sight, I do not despair, for I sense my beloved in my heart as a living presence. [Psalm 23 or another favorite passage from the Bible or prayer book may be recited.]

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. God makes me to lie down in green pastures; God leads me beside the still waters. God restores my soul; O God, You guide me in straight paths for Your name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Comfort in Times of Sorrow

When a loved one passes away, every member of our congregation is touched by the loss. It’s through traditions and comfort from our community that we gain solace and ease our pain. The Jewish traditions associated with death and mourning not only speak to the preciousness of life, but are intended to help us in a loving way when we are feeling weak, afraid, bereft, and vulnerable. These time-tested observances help to calm us and heal us, enabling us to make the necessary adjustments to separation and loss. At Congregation B’nai Israel, our clergy and staff are here to comfort our synagogue family. We are here to offer prayer, guidance, counseling and support. Misheberach Request

One of the central Jewish prayers for those who are ill or recovering from illness or accidents is the Misheberach. The prayer takes its name from two words: “mi” and “sheberach” meaning, “the One who blessed.” It asks that the One who blessed our ancestors bring about a complete healing for the person for whom the blessing is said. On Shabbat and Festivals we offer the Misheberach prayer for those in need of healing (physically & spiritually). Ezrat-Am

One of the great roles that a congregational community can play in the lives of its member families is providing a place to turn to in times of difficulty, trial, or illness. Here, as in many other areas of life, the old saying has it right: “It is better to give than to receive.” Ezrat-Am is the “Caring Committee” at Congregation B’nai Israel. They provide assistance to members who are going through difficult times in a variety of ways. Bereavement: Clergy Support

When sorrow comes, our clergy knows how to be there to support you in loving, and meaningful ways. In the case where the death is expected, the Rabbis are available to visit the ill and aged and to help their families in pre-need arrangements for the ceremony and funeral. Following the funeral, our clergy will be honored to lead the Shiva minyan services for the family as well.

At Congregation B’nai Israel we understand that grief is powerful and sometimes overwhelming. Losing a loved one brings on different emotional, physical, and spiritual feelings.
