Yizkor means “may [God] remember,” from the Hebrew root zachor. It is used to designate the entire memorial service of the Synagogue. Yizkor is recited four times a year: Yom Kippur, the end of Sukkot (Shemini Atzeret), the last day of Pesach, and on Shavuot.
Our tradition teaches us to honor the memories of our departed loved ones during the Yizkor services. Each year, we publish a Book of Remembrance, a list of those who are remembered by congregants, which are distributed at the Yizkor service. It is during this service that we yearn for those we loved, we long to have them close to us for yet another challenge in our lives, yet another joy, yet another precious moment together. God be with us as our hearts are broken; console us at this hour. May the memory of our departed loved ones endure among us as a blessing.

MEDITATION UPON KINDLING THE YAHRZEIT LIGHT
I give thanks for the blessing of life, of companionship, and of memory. Though my loved one is beyond my sight, I do not despair, for I sense my beloved in my heart as a living presence.

Mizmor l’David. Adonai ro-I lo echsar. Bin’ot desheh yarbitzeini, al mei m’nuchot y’nahaleni. Nafshi y’shoveiv, yancheini b’maglei tzedek l’maan sh’mo. Gam ki eilech b’gei tzalmavet lo ira ra, ki ata imadi. Shivt’cha u-mishantecha heima y’nachamuni. Ta-aroch l’fanai Shulchan neged tzor’rai, dishanta va-shemen roshi kos r’vaya. A Psalm of David
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. God makes me to lie down in green pastures; God leads me beside the still waters.
God restores my soul; O God, You guide me in straight paths for Your name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
As this light burns pure and clear, so may the blessed memory of the goodness of my dear loved one, illumine my soul.

O GOD, exalted and full of compassion, grant perfect peace in Your sheltering Presence, among the holy and pure, to the soul of _______, who has gone to his/her eternal home. Master of mercy, we beseech You, remember all the worthy and righteous deeds that he/she performed in the land of the living. May his/her soul be bound up in the bond of eternal life. You, O GOD, are now his/her portion and sure inheritance. May he/she rest in peace. And let us say: Amen.
THE MEANING OF KADDISH
The Kaddish Prayer so warmly, so inexorably, woven into the tapestry of mourning is essentially not a prayer for our departed. It is a prayer in praise of God. Not one word of the Aramaic, in which it is written, has even the slightest connection with cessation of life. Having its origins in the days of the great assemblies of Rabbis, the creators of the Mishna and Talmud, the prayer was originally recited at the conclusion of the study of a portion of sacred writing. Gradually, the practice developed of reciting the Kaddish at the conclusion of a great scholar’s life as he completed “his own book of life with its sacred teachings.” Soon, however, the alchemy of equality worked its leaven into this practice so that by the Tenth Century it became the custom to recite the Kaddish at the termination of all persons’ lives.
No experience in Jewish life today equals the emotional magnetism of the duty to recite Kaddish for a lost member of the family. The sentimental associations strike deep and meaningful roots and reflect Judaism’s sage counsel regarding death and immortality. As we praise God in life, for life, so do we praise God in life for death, the necessary complement of life. It is not merely that man has a soul, man is a soul. Immortality is not a place, it is an imperishable state of being. The real is spiritual and the spiritual is real. At the very moment when what is most difficult is to thank God, Judaism says extol His name, sing of His wonderful ways, thank Him for the privilege of sharing a life. At a time when one’s faith in God is most challenged, the Kaddish says to us: reaffirm your faith in Him, in your world, and in your ability to see beyond the day’s pain.
Tomorrow is never without hope. For life itself is Kadosh-holy. Mind is eternal; personality, character have no end.

Y’hei sh’lama raba min sh’maya, v’chayim aleinu v’al kol Yisrael; v’imru: Amen.
Oseh shalom bimromav, hu ya’aseh shalom aleinu, v’al kol Yisrael; v’imru: Amen.
May God’s great name come to be magnified and sanctified in the world God brought into being. May God’s majestic reign prevail soon in your lives, in your days, and in the life of the whole House of Israel; and let us say: Amen.
May God’s great name be blessed to the end of time.
May God’s holy name come to be blessed, acclaimed, and glorified; revered, raised, and beautified; honored and praised. Blessed is the One who is entirely beyond all the blessings and hymns, all the praises and words of comfort that we speak in the world; and let us say: Amen.
Let perfect peace abound; let there be abundant life for us and for all Israel. May the One who makes peace in the high heavens make peace for us, all Israel, and all who dwell on earth; and let us say: Amen.
May the Source of peace bestow peace on all who mourn, and may we be a source of comfort to all who are bereaved. Amen.
