Foreword

‘All for Jesus, Jesus for All’ is a timely and innovate course bringing us back to the basic Christian call to ‘follow Jesus’. The Course is rooted in Congregationalism, local community and the transforming power of God. Throughout we are reminded of the Christian responsibility to love God and love our neighbour. This course points us towards practical examples of life flourishing in our churches and societies as a demonstration of the presence of the Kingdom of God on earth.

It is over 15 years since I co-ordinated the Congregational Federation’s resource, Growing Disciples, which sought to encourage group exploration of our discipleship of Jesus in a range of ways. And now it is good to see a new resource to help with this exploration, covering a number of important topics in what it means to follow Jesus in today’s world. In line with a Congregational ethos, it has been written by people with different insights and passions, so that there are ideas here which all of us can engage and wrestle with, and explore together, with opportunities to go a little deeper for those who wish.

Clemy has an MA in Contextual Theology from Luther King Centre for Theology and Ministry. She was the Church Support Worker for the CF Southeast Area 2012 - 2017 and attended Caterham Hill Congregational Church (Caterham Community Church) for over 20 years before moving to Cambridgeshire. Her professional background is in project management, training, group facilitation, therapeutic counselling and has many years of experience in mission and ministry. She is an accredited Pastoral Supervisor with the Association of Pastoral Supervisors and Educators.

She enjoys all things different and delights in her three (currently) grandchildren.

Catherine Booton

Last and certainly not least our thanks go to CWM, for their unwavering support and funding of this project.

Catherine is the Learning and Development Manager at Congregational Federation.

As part of this role, she is also Director of Studies for the FD in Practical Theology course. She also, when asked, visits churches to lead worship and talks about the work of the Learning and Development department. Before this, Catherine served as a church minister for 18 years at Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Newton Burgoland Congregational churches, where she grew up and came to faith. In what’s left of her spare time she enjoys listening to rock music, knitting and other handicrafts, reading and visiting interesting places with husband, Robert, and son, Harry.

Elisabeth Sweeney-Smith

Richard Gascoyne

Elisabeth is a natural networker and enjoys sharing her faith in Jesus either from the pulpit, in print or in her daily life. Since the placement year of her ministry training course with the Congregational Institute for Practical Theology she has also been a volunteer with Derbyshire’s Rural Christian Chaplaincy team - the perfect place for earthy conversations. Elisabeth says her relationship with God deepens as she dwells in Scripture but her understanding of Scripture is enhanced as she interacts with the Bible in a shared learning environment. Elisabeth held the position of President of the Congregational Federation in 2024/2025.

Richard has been a Christian all his life, being baptised into the Church of England where he continued to be a member until his retirement aged 65. For the last 17 years of his working life, he was a Stewardship Officer in the Diocese of Newcastle. After retirement he found that many of the teachings and attitudes of the church were at odds with his personal perspective of God and he stopped going to church.

However, God would not let him go, and in 2019 he was invited to a service at Newark Congregational Church, and he hasn’t looked back. He is a Christian simply because he loves what Christ said and did, and it is Him that he tries to follow.

Alister Weighton Alister has been Minister of Coatdyke Congregational Church in Airdrie since 2019.

He trained with the Congregational Institute for Practical Theology and found his course very enriching. Before this, Alister was a Teacher of Religious Studies in Secondary Schools in Scotland for more than thirty years. In 2025, Alister became the Chairperson of the Congregational Federation in Scotland. Alister’s motivation as a Christian is simple: when we experience Christ living in our heart, through faith, we desperately want everyone to know the life-changing experience of Christ as their personal Lord and Saviour. As The Bible tells us, “We love because He first loved us.” (1 John 4:19).

Ruth Green One time croupier in London Casinos, Teaching Assistant, Foster Carer, now Minister of Pennymoor Congregational church since it was formed in 2008. She also helped to bring new life to Way Village and now helping Nomansland churches. She served many years off and on for various Congregational Federation Committees and currently Chair of Church Support Committee. Ruth also served as Secretary, Chair and currently Treasurer of the Southwest Area. She was in the first cohort of the Seedbeds Pioneer course supported by the Congregational Federation, United Reformed Church and Church Mission Society and now a coach for that course. She helped to write and deliver a Christian Foundation course for Crediton Congregational church many years ago.

Kevin Dunman

Justin Lunniss Justin is Minister of Wivenhoe Congregational Church and is an Accredited Minister with the Congregational Federation.

Justin is a wheelchair user after a near fatal accident in 1988 aged 16 years old. He became a professional musician as a singer songwriter, session musician, entertainer and tutor. Justin found faith not long after losing the use of his legs by being introduced to a church by his neighbour. Justin trained as a local preacher and remained so until he was introduced to the Congregational Way and trained for ministry through the Congregational Federation receiving a degree in Practical Theology and was ordained in 2015.

Kevin is the Minister of Cawsand CC He has a passion for encouraging the Ministry of all believers and loves running discipleship courses and sharing with others on their journey of finding out where God might be leading them.

Kevin has been involved in piloting the online delivery of the program and he is keen to see this continue as an option for accessing the program.

Yvonne Campbell - General Secretary

Debbie has been a member of Wivenhoe Congregational Church since 2015. She often presents a service (when asked) on Fresh Expressions, bringing new ways to make you think outside of the norm. Debbie actively seeks new ways of ministering to people, whether this is through creating something that’s of a craft nature, singing, poetry, or even performing humorous biblical plays or just being in nature, she manages to find ways that somehow people seem to always remember.

Yvonne is the General Secretary of the Congregational Federation and a member of Wavertree Congregational Church in Liverpool. Yvonne has a passion and a mandate to promote the distinctiveness of the congregational tradition as part of her role to support churches. At the heart of her role is supporting, advising and encouraging churches, the members, ministers and deacons. She enjoys visiting and sharing news, leading worship or vision days, helping practically and coming alongside to pray. She represents the Congregational Federation on and at various ecumenical bodies, including the Free Churches Group, CTBI and annual denominational assemblies.

Welcome and Introduction Welcome to the “All for Jesus, Jesus for all” course.

Some two thousand years ago Jesus sent his followers to go and share His message of love and salvation (John

3:16) and to make disciples who would do the same.

Today this mandate of mission hasn’t changed; Love God and love your neighbour as yourself, and believe in the One whom God sent, Jesus Christ. However, it turns out it is not as simple as it sounds… humans have a way of complicating things. So, when we talk about disciples and mission, for many of us it can sometimes feel more like “Mission Impossible”. Take heart! Jesus also said, “…you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses … to the ends of the earth.” What does this mean for us in the 21st century? And why then, another course on discipleship when there are already so many readily available resources?

The answer is simple; this resource is not just another “how to” course. To start with it is essentially Congregational in its ethos and funded by the Council for World Mission (CWM). Furthermore, we have chosen to use the alternative word “apprentice/s” alongside the word “disciple/s” for the following reasons. The word “disciple” has changed over the hundreds of years and does not always mean what it did originally i.e. apprentice. This has impacted the way 14

“Going out” to make disciples as expressed in Matthew 28, is no longer a priority for many of us. It feels too hard.

Living in what many scholars have termed the “postChristian era”, many of us are in survival mode, or at least, we think we are. The truth might be different however, if we look a little deeper at our circumstances. Therefore, this resource is about giving space to reflect on your journey as a disciple (apprentice) of Jesus, a practicing Christian who puts their faith into action. It is also an opportunity to reignite faith and reengage with what it truly means to be a follower of Jesus. By allowing the power of God to transform our own hearts we will reflect more of Christ in our response to His call. This course is essentially for those who want to deepen their understanding of what it means to be apprenticed by Jesus today in the 21st century.

How the Course Works Each session includes prayers, hymns, group activities, Bible passages, a time for reflection and discussion. There is also a “Going Deeper Challenge” at the end of each session for those who would like to deepen their reflections between sessions. Your course facilitator will explain in more detail when you start the course and answer any questions you may have. Some of the resources for the course will be on the Congregational Federation website and the app which we encourage you to download. Do let your facilitator know should you have any trouble accessing the online resources.

We are all called to minister and serve in love, and therefore all called to mission, ministry and outreach through prayer and action. To love, pray for and serve others however and wherever we can in the wisdom, grace and strength of the Holy Spirit.

To this end, the course offers a practical way to step out into our communities with courage and faith. As part of the course there are podcasts in which various Congregational Federation members tell their stories. We have included an active listening workshop and webinar which aims to enable course participants to take steps towards listening to their communities and to see where God is already at work. Furthermore, there is a resource pack for those churches that are called into Holy Spirit led action to either help meet the needs in local communities or to support and partner with others already working to meet those needs, whether Christian or not.

Whether the reason for doing the course is to grow in faith, reconnect with the things of God or understand the call and purpose as a disciple, it all starts in our own hearts.

Our hope, as you do the course, is that you will encounter God in new ways, find that in His transforming presence your desire to make disciples becomes irresistible; that as you reconnect with this ancient call of Jesus, the Holy Spirit will bless and empower you with creative imagination and a renewed sense of purpose.

1. T o inspire you and your church to go deeper with God

Course facilitators may present the material each week, but it’s up to each person to then take this material and work with it between sessions. How much you get out of each session depends on how much you choose to prayerfully engage with the material. We’re all in different places on the journey with God. So “going deeper” will mean different things to different people. It is easy to step out in faith in areas that we feel comfortable in. What the course aims to do in encouraging participants to go deeper, is to learn to embrace those parts of our faith that aren’t always comfortable to walk in. Much of our discomfort lies with our fears, both natural and learnt. Therefore, it takes courage to step out in faith and do the things that Jesus calls us to do individually and corporately.

This introductory session is to lay the foundation for the rest of the course. Its purpose is to give you a sense of what the course entails and to help you decide if this is the right direction for you at this time. Our vision for the course is for it to reignite your passion and commitment to follow Jesus, to learn from him, to listen to the Holy Spirit and to take steps towards doing something new in response to the call to go and make disciples. Throughout this course, we want to emphasise that a disciple of Jesus is a Christian who puts their faith into practice by being open to learning and growing in faith as a life-long pursuit. Furthermore, a disciple of Jesus gets involved in making disciples in whichever way they feel able to, through prayer and action, allowing the power of

The questions to ask ourselves, therefore, as we start this course together is, do we want to cultivate a heart that walks daily with God in a way that transforms us increasingly into the likeness of Jesus? Are we willing to learn new things by hearing what the Lord is saying in all kinds of ways? Are we open to considering those less familiar perspectives? Are we prepared to think differently to the way we have perhaps thought for many years? A good example in the Bible of being called to think differently is in Acts 10:9-15. Peter has a vision from God which challenges him to eat what would have been forbidden in Jewish law. From his shocked exclamation we see that to change what he has always believed seems almost impossible to him. However, he chooses to obey God’s call and as a result many become believers.

This course is not designed to tell you how to think about your faith, but instead, to offer a space for reflection and ideas for thought as you look at the call to discipleship and what it means to follow Jesus individually and together.

No matter where each participant may find themselves on that journey of faith, we pray the Holy Spirit will enable you to learn new things and strengthen you to step out in faith trusting that you will hear Jesus when He calls us to wholeheartedly follow Him in becoming disciple-makers.

N.B. This is the most intensive session of the course as it contains exploration of the fundamentals of the Christian Faith. You may find that you revisit this teaching again to be able to share your walk of faith with greater clarity.

Summary: We embark on a journey to explore the nature of Jesus Christ and the foundational beliefs of the Christian faith in order to understand the call of Jesus on our lives.

Through examining biblical teachings and reflecting on the key verse, John 3:16, we delve into the concept of the Trinity—the divine community of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—and what it means for humanity. This session focuses on understanding the person of Jesus and the significance of concepts such as grace, sin, redemption, and salvation in light of God’s plan to reconcile all of creation to Himself.

Opening Prayer Gracious God, You have searched us and known us even before we knew You and it is Your great Love that draws us to You. We all have different experiences that have led us to this place of exploration of fundamental beliefs of the Christian faith.

We pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit as we listen and as we talk openly about subjects we have not shared with others before. We ask that our understanding of You as our Creator be deepened through this time together in Your Word.

We pray for wisdom, clarity and sensitivity and that we will all feel we have learned something that will encourage us to share our faith more confidently.

Who was Jesus?

The Christian Faith is based upon its Founder Jesus Christ (an historical figure born before King Herod died in 4BC).

The Bible records extraordinary claims by his first followers about His Resurrection from the dead which certainly elevates Jesus to more than an ordinary historical figure.

In addition to the Gospels the life of Jesus is also recorded in other historical documents of the time e.g. Josephus’ paragraph on this in Antiquities of the Jews, Book 18, Chap. 3.

“I AM The True Vine” (John 15:1-8). He is the True Connection for all you need for an abundant and fruitful life.

Although the word Trinity is not found in the Bible, the relational aspect of it conveys the flow of Divine Love as both God the Father and God the Holy Spirit feature in the Jesus story. At the start of His public ministry, the Spirit of God alights like a dove upon Jesus at His Baptism and the Father calls out “This is my Beloved Son in whom I am well pleased” (Matt.3:1617).

I AM the Resurrection and the Life (John 11:25). Jesus brings new Life out of diseased lives now and He is the Hope of eternal life.

In His Farewell Address Jesus says, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my Name He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you” (John 14:26). Jesus certainly makes references to being One with God His Father alluding to His Divinity: “I and the Father are One” (John 10:30). Another example statement of Jesus’ divinity can be found in John 17:5, “And now Father, glorify Me together with Yourself with the glory which I had with You before the world was.”

John’s gospel records the 7 “I AM” sayings of Jesus: “I AM The Bread of Life” (John 6:35). He meets hunger in each person for love, acceptance, value and purpose.

“I AM The Good Shepherd” (John 10:11, 14). He gives His life for His sheep.

“I AM the Door” (John 10:7, 9). He is the Entrance to all that you need to know of God. 34

“I AM the Way the Truth and the Life” (John 14:6). He has all the answers and shows you what is best for your life.

I AM the Light of the World (John 8:12 and John 12:44-50).

Jesus changes darkness into light. There is no place too dark for His light.

It was to the woman at the well in Samaria that Jesus made another admission about Himself (John 4:25-26).

Samaritan Woman: “When the Messiah comes (who is called Christ) he will proclaim all things to us.”

Jesus replied, “I am He.” We cannot talk about the Christian Faith without hearing words such as Sin, Redemption and Salvation. So, let’s explore these next.

Sin: Denial of our self-relatedness to God’s life speaks of our need of a Saviour The Laws of Moses are understood traditionally to have been given by Yahweh/God to protect God’s people from harm to themselves, to help steer their lives individually and in community and in harmony with nature.

Jesus summed up all the law in the Two Greatest Commandments: To Love God and to Love your Neighbour as Yourself (Matt. 22:34-40). A definition of Love is to ‘Will the Good of the Other.’ If we do not love God, or love ourselves and don’t show love to others, the New 35

The traditional doctrines of the Church acknowledge a Triune God. A Divine Community of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Although the Nicene Creed is not generally used

by Reformists it represents the traditional view of Jesus as Fully God and Fully Human. It is a Christian statement of faith that is the only ecumenical creed because it is accepted as authoritative by the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, and major Protestant churches (see a copy of the Nicene Creed at the end of this session).

Session 1

Biblically sin begins when Adam and Eve choose to determine what is good and what is evil themselves by eating of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the garden of Eden, rather than trusting God’s wisdom.

Because of this disobedience sin enters the world in causing a rupture in the relationship between humanity and a Holy God. Before this Adam walked unashamed in his nakedness (and vulnerability) in the cool of the evening in friendly conversation with his Creator (Gen 3:7-13).

God:

Adam: I hid because I was naked.

God:

Who told you that you were naked?

Humankind felt guilt for the first time because sin (defined as a broken relationship with God and all creation) has a habit of awakening in us, just by its nature, a sense of shame and self-consciousness in the presence of God. We can probably all identify a time when we chose to hide ourselves from God. Self-reproach and alienation from God led to the blamegame and Adam points the finger at Eve who pushes the blame onto the serpent. Adam’s poor choice therefore had consequences for inter-personal relationships and humankind’s relationship with the natural world. Abuse rather than harmony is the outcome.

Redemption: The How of Salvation Sin has infected the world alienating humanity from God and bad choices have caused damage in our relationships with each other and with nature, but God wants us back in the Divine circle of Love and has gone to extraordinary lengths to achieve this.

“But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem these who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.” (Galatians 4:4-7).

The Good News is that Jesus, in the Incarnation, came from outside the disfunction of humanity’s selfishness and entered into the disfunction to do something about the self-directed focus of humankind’s affections. The Divine became human so that humanity could be re-connected with Divine Love through Jesus.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only Begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16).

And in Jesus’ own words: “Then he took a cup and after giving thanks he gave it to them saying “Drink from it all of you for this is my blood of the covenant which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” (Matthew 26:27-28).

“Sin is basically the refusal to live in right relationship with God and others; the denial of God’s grace and the refusal to live in just and peaceful community that participates in and reflects God’s own life in communion.” (Faith Seeking Understanding, Daniel Migliore, Pg. 157).

The Mercy of God in the New Covenant, given through Jesus’ sacrifice, is to be invoked upon our confession to God of our sins and by the acceptance of Jesus as our Eternal Redeemer, rather than by the making of sacrifices as payment to God by the sinner as was the case in the Old Covenant. “If we confess our sins He is just and faithful to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9).

“Thus, it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations.” (Luke 24:45-47).

Faith in Jesus’ extra-ordinary life and openness to the Spirit of God is how we connect with God for Jesus said, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.” (John 6:29).

Salvation: The effect of Redemption

Sin, redemption and salvation impact upon humankind deeply and we need the Spirit of God to act as Teacher in revealing to us all that Jesus had taught his first followers whose testimony grew into a world religion - a faith with Divine Love at its heart.

The word salvation comes from the verb “to salvage”.

To rescue something from going to waste and which is restored to its former glory.

• F or the Individual - Salvation restores fellowship between the Creator and the believer because Christ became the new Adam in His incarnation so that we can be resurrected in Christ as children of God, sharing in the circle of Divine Love through grace.

• F or Community Life - The Gospels often show Jesus restoring someone into their community who had become alienated from society through sickness or through an infringement of the law of Moses.

• F or Nature - “...the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.” (Romans 8:21).

The Gospel is often referred to as the mystery of salvation because it is not easy to understand with our finite minds what the Infinite Mind of God has done. Jesus knew that His Resurrection was challenging to grasp and knew it would continue to be so down the ages so His words to Thomas are reassuring for us: “Blessed are you Thomas 38

Following Jesus In our key verse above, we read that Andrew and Simon Peter immediately dropped their nets and followed Jesus.

The rest, as they say, is history—or is it? If we believe that Jesus died, was buried and on the third day He rose again, appeared to His disciples and ascended into heaven and sent His Spirit to live in us, then He is alive today and present with and in us. In a very real sense, it is not just history, He is actively working in our lives now, calling to us, reminding us, teaching us and transforming us as we choose daily to follow Him. He is Emmanuel, God with us then at His birth and now by His Holy Spirit.

Therefore, following Jesus as His disciples means movement, change, learning, and ongoing transformation, shaping us more each day into His likeness (Romans 8:29).

Andrew and Simon Peter left everything behind, their very means of livelihood, and stepped out empty-handed to walk with Him not knowing where it would lead. His call was so compelling that they chose to stop what they were doing and followed Him, a decision that altered the course of their lives forever and still changes lives today. Believing in Jesus is to be transformed daily into His likeness through obedience and the willingness to follow His lead.

for a living. Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” And they left their nets at once and followed him.”

Being His Apprentice To be a Christian denotes a sense of having arrived at a destination; to be a disciple means that we are and continue to be on a living learning journey with Jesus, inspired each day by His teaching and His life. It means to be willing to be challenged by Him through His Holy Spirit and to live courageously as we share our witness of His saving grace. As we humbly walk with Jesus, we are transformed day by day into His image (2 Corinthians 3:18) and our hearts are ignited with passion to follow His example in wanting to make disciples.

Those who wholeheartedly follow their teacher’s example become like Him because they desire it so deeply. This transformation has a dual purpose: to reflect God’s glory, and to reveal His presence on earth through the Church (Ephesians 3:20-21). None of this is possible without the Holy Spirit, who not only reveals Christ in us but also empowers us to embrace the transformative work He is doing in our lives. This transformation enables us to deny ourselves and to love our neighbour as we love ourselves.

Love is not an abstract concept or feeling, but an active response to the need we see in ourselves and around us.

Loving God, ourselves and others requires action.

Passing it On Furthermore, following Jesus is not just about personal growth and action; it is about sharing this wonderful message of love. True discipleship means passing on what we learn from Jesus, passing on our own testimonies of transformation—through ministry, acts of love, and the creation of peace and justice-filled communities, whether locally or globally. Jesus calls His followers to learn from Him so that, through them, others may come to know Him and to follow His example of being a person of truthful love and genuine peace. His grace is sufficient for everyone. No one is beyond His reach. We may not live to see the end result of our efforts but trust in God that His will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

When it comes to following Jesus, we can expect an adventure, often leading us to places we never imagined.

We may face challenges; however, we are never alone in them. God is with us and in us, and sends us individually and together with others, mostly to those nearest to us; those within our sphere of influence. He does not expect us to do things on our own. Our role is to connect to others in the church and to respond as Isaiah did, “Here I am, send me” (Isaiah 6:8) or said another way, “send us”. This willingness to be sent is central to a life of faith. As Jesus said, “Those who love me will do my will.” (John 14:15).

May we each continue to follow, grow, and be transformed

by His call to be His disciples, His apprentices who don’t wait to know it all, but learn ‘on the go’ trusting that God will communicate His wisdom when needed (James 1:5).

B. Teaching Session and Podcast

Prayer is simply a conversation between you and God, our loving Father in heaven whether quietly in our heart or out loud wherever we may be. Jesus taught his disciples to pray to God as if He were their father, “our father who art in heaven…” (Matthew 6:9). It would have been practically unheard of at that time to refer to God as “father”. To the Hebrew people, God’s name, JHWH, was sacred and not to be pronounced. The term “Lord” was used instead.

Jesus, being God’s son, referred to God as “Abba”, a form of “daddy”. He was demonstrating a less formal and more intimate way of praying. This alone would have brought a challenge to His disciples to think differently about who God is.

If we’ve had a good relationship with our own father, maybe we can imagine how we would talk to him. If not, imagine how you would talk to someone else you know, who loves you dearly and would do anything they can for you. We pray to the almighty God who can do anything and loves us more than we can imagine. Father is one of many ways to refer to God. The Bible has many other names for God, and we can pray using any of those names. Many say “Lord” when praying, or they pray “in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit”. Others may address Jesus or the Holy Spirit separately. At Christmas time we often refer to God as Emmanuel, meaning “God is with us”. Prince of Peace and King of Kings are also used in prayer. There are many stories of people who prayed to God without knowing His name, and He answered their call for help.

Sometimes being noisy is appropriate, starting with praise and thanksgiving, having an attitude of gratefulness. There is no right or wrong way to pray; one way is not better than another. It is the words of our hearts that matter. Having

Opening Prayer

Honesty in prayer is important. It brings greater awareness or where we are at with God. The Psalmist were honest with God about their struggles. The Psalms can help us to pray with authenticity if we are struggling to articulate our feelings no matter how dark a place we may find ourselves in (Psalm 139). The Psalms and other Bible stories can help to remind us that God has a long track record of helping those who trust in Him. Any part of the Bible can be used for praying. For example, one way of praying is to replace biblical names with your own name or the names of the people or situations you are praying for. Give it a try and see what happens.

Prayer isn’t only about asking for things. What kind of relationship would you have with someone if all you ever do is ask? Prayer can simply be an ongoing conversation with God throughout the day. It doesn’t have to be in a special place or at a certain time and it doesn’t matter if you are sitting, standing, or even lying down. Not many of us can hold a conversation with God for a long time in one go, if you can, great, if not then chatting to Him as things happen is okay too.

worried. It may be something someone else says to us in conversation or whilst they are praying or preaching.

Sometimes circumstances occur that fit in with a way God seems to be leading us, coincidences that only make sense with God’s involvement, sometimes called, Godincidences.

The Bible also tells of people having dreams, hearing a voice or encountering an angel, and people today do have similar experiences. God has many ways to speak to us and guide us, mostly through quiet reflection. The more we connect with God through prayer, worship, Bible study and fellowship with other believers, the more we will recognise His voice. Don’t be overly concerned about whether it is God speaking. Jesus said that His sheep know His voice and will not follow another (John 10). When a close relative or friend calls us on the phone, we don’t have to ask who it is, we immediately recognise their voice. It requires trust on our part, that we will hear Him when He speaks to us.

It is important to remember that in the Congregational tradition, prayer is not prescriptive. In other words, we are free to pray as the Holy Spirit moves us when gathered or on our own. There may be some structured prayer in a church service, however there is also room for spontaneous prayer. Prayers can be heartfelt and reflective, and each person may address God in their own way.

Praise, Worship and Thanksgiving

Prayer isn’t just talking to God, it is listening too, so how do we hear Him speak to us? There are many ways.

Sometimes as we read the Bible something touches our hearts or “jumps out at us” and enables understanding or gives us wisdom. It may well be the answer to a question we’ve been asking or God reassuring us when we’ve been

Therefore, praise, worship and thanksgiving are often part of prayer. Praise is a form of expressing love to God and many examples can be found in the Psalms. “I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High”. (Psalm 9:1-2).

gratitude in our hearts is a reminder of how good God is and of all the good things he has already done, which helps to boost our faith before we turn to our needs and wants.

It may help to remember that we are created in His image and for connection with Him. God believes in us for He created us. He has prepared good works in advance for us to do (Ephesians 2:10) which He entrusts to us.

meant to be something that others do on our behalf. It is something we should all partake in. Our worship celebrates and witnesses the extraordinary presence and power of God among His people.” (Being Congregational, Page 13).

Whenever we gather for church business meetings, as well as Sunday services, prayer and Bible study groups, or when we serve each other or in the community (toddler groups, café church, foodbanks etc.), they are all acts of worship. The Bible tells us to give ourselves to God as a living sacrifice which is our act of worship (Romans 12:1).

Whether we sing, dance, play an instrument, serve tea, do children’s work, preach or anything else, we should treat all that we do in God’s name as worship.

Communion is also an act of worship as we remember and give thanks for the sacrifice that Jesus made for us all. It can be helpful to have communion before our church meetings especially if we have challenging and important decisions to make. See also the “Being Congregational” course, session 3. “A Congregational church has within itself, thanks to the giftings of God, everything it needs for worship. Yet, what we bring and prepare are just ingredients; when we bring all to Jesus, we find that it is God who feeds our souls. In worship, we offer what we have to Jesus. We discover in His sharing of His life, the food that fills our emptiness, and this is a pattern that we learn to repeat. We do all of this together. Prayer is part of worship, and worship to God is about acknowledging Him for who He is rather than for what He can do for us. Worship involves proclamations about God’s infinite wisdom, love, grace and His eternal Kingdom reign. Our worship of God is our response to his love for us despite our weaknesses and failures. Worship to God is also a response to being inspired by the wonders of nature and the universe as God’s infinite creation and imagination.

Worship is a response to our awe and love of God and can be expressed in words, song, music and in any creative endeavour such as art or any work we put our hands and minds to (Colossians 3:23-25).

In the Old Testament this was the case, but look at David again, because he trusted in God’s grace and mercy He still found favour in God’s eyes because of his faith. “Without faith it is impossible to please God.” (Hebrews 11:6). Summary Wisdom is more than intelligence or knowledge; it involves discernment, good decision-making, and helping others.

Solomon, when asked by God what he desired, chose wisdom, demonstrating maturity as a young king. God, pleased with his request, also granted him wealth and honour. Solomon’s wisdom initially blessed his kingdom, as seen in the Queen of Sheba’s admiration. However, later in life, his heart turned from God. As believers in Jesus and in particular as Congregationalists, we seek wisdom through Christ, believing in collective discernment and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The discussion encourages reflection on wisdom, the mind of Christ, and how believers can seek God’s will together.

Opening Prayer Father God, thank you that we come together again as a group to worship and learn more about You. Open our eyes that we may see wonderful things in Your law. (Psalm 119 v 18). Wisdom can be difficult to define. It is more than being clever and knowing things. Wisdom implies the ability to see right from wrong, to make good and appropriate decisions and choices, and using your experience to help others. In these first two passages we see that Solomon, when asked by God what he wanted, prayed for wisdom.

We don’t know exactly how old Solomon was when he became king, but it is suggested he was in his late teens or early twenties, therefore he was quite a young man at the 71

Notice in 1 Kings 10 passage the way the Queen comments on how Solomon’s wisdom has blessed others around him and also how she praises God as she sees all that God has done for and through Solomon. The community around Solomon might have initially benefitted from his wisdom but unfortunately this situation does not continue. If we read deeper into Solomon’s story, we hear that God raised up adversaries to challenge him militarily and that as he grew older, his many wives turned his heart away from only following God, to also follow other gods, He even built temples to them so his wives could burn offering to their own gods there.

“Wisdom from God has eternal qualities that uplift the downtrodden, heals and restores, speaks of abundance in love and grace, forgives all, has mercy on all and seeks justice for the marginalised in society. When we ask God to give us wisdom, we should not be surprised to find that He gives us His heart for the lost. Our decision making cannot be based on knowledge alone, but on the Wisdom of God personified in Christ.” (Clemy Gilmore).

Seeking the Mind of Christ As Congregational churches we talk a lot about being part of the “priesthood of all believers” and not having hierarchies or needing anyone to act as an intermediary between us and God. We say that through meeting together at Church meeting we are seeking the mind of 72

Christ to guide us in the decisions we need to take as churches, but how do we know what the mind of Christ is like? And how can we try to seek it? Philippians 2:1-16 gives a good description of a Christlike mind leading to Christlike behaviour.

In Session 1 we learnt about who Jesus was and what He did.

• H e made time for people and stopped to help even when travelling to somewhere else.

• He listened and talked to people.

• H e had time for the lowest in society - children, homeless, cast out, women etc.

• He spent lots of time in prayer.

• Wanted to do God’s will, no matter the cost.

The Congregational way has Jesus as the head, and this list helps us to know what His guidance would be. The Congregational tradition involves everyone and gives us all the opportunity to be a part of God’s mission, to listen out for what God says. Each one of us has a voice and the ability to act on what God reveals to us. Congregationalists believe that, through the power of the Holy Spirit, in fellowship with those we are in a covenant relationship with, we can seek God’s will together and that through the consensus revealed to us, we will be given wisdom to act in his way. We remember those in positions of power, and we pray for those in authority that they will find God’s wisdom where they look for it and use it to benefit all those they have authority over, so all will gain from their decisions.

A living Expression of Christ’s Love In the Gospel of John, Jesus offers us a profound and lifechanging command: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” (John 13:34 (NIV).

From these sacred words blossoms the essence of a Christian caring community, a family of believers bound not by blood, but by the Spirit, united through faith, love, and the example of Christ. A caring community is not merely a gathering of people with shared beliefs; it is a living expression of Christ’s love, a sanctuary of compassion, service, and fellowship. It recognizes that spiritual needs are as vital as physical and emotional ones. In a world often marked by isolation and greed, the Christian community is called to be a beacon of hope, a place where hearts are mended and lives are restored through a spirit of generosity.

A caring community wraps its arms around others.

Through prayer, Gospel truth, and daily kindness, it mourns with those who mourn, uplifts those who are weary and celebrates with those who rejoice. It follows in the footprints of Jesus, offering encouragement in both word and deed. We put our faith into action using our Godgiven gifts to meet people where they are at, both within the church and beyond its walls. Faith is not meant to be kept to oneself; it is a gift to be shared. Through action, 83

Images of Christlike Love Jesus gives us vivid images of what this looks like in daily life and it is a daily choice: • Generosity - “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none...” (Luke 3:10-11).

True community opens its hands and hearts. When one is in need, all respond, not out of obligation, but out of love.

• Empathy - “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.”

(Matthew 9:36).

Empathy calls us to see with the eyes of Christ; to notice the hurting and respond with tender care.

• Humility - “Clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because ‘God opposes the proud but shows favour to the humble.’” (1 Peter 5:5).

In humility, we honour each other. We listen; we serve without seeking recognition. We treat others as we would want to be treated.

• Unity - “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!” (Psalm 133:1).

Unity is the harmony of many hearts beating in time with Christ’s. To be in unity is to be the beautiful bride of Christ anointed with divine love. The Bible tells us that God is love and that Jesus is the greatest expression of His Love.

Therefore, love is the heartbeat of our Christian faith and at the root of unity. Unity does not mean agreement; We can disagree and still be in unity. The deepest unity comes through our shared faith and love in Christ. So that no matter the challenge, we still turn up to love one another.

(1 Corinthians 13:2).

• Forgiveness - “Love your enemies... Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” (Luke 6:35-36).

Forgiveness is the divine whisper of our Lord, calling us to rise above the natural and walk in the supernatural. Though forgiveness can feel like a mountain too steep to climb, it is in truth, a sacred gift given to us through the Spirit; a treasure entrusted to fragile hands. We are not born with forgiving hearts, forgiveness is a seed, sown by grace, watered by patience, and nurtured through practice. Over time, it grows strong within us, becoming part of the very fabric of our Christian identity. Yet even as it blooms, it carries weight. To forgive is to wrestle with your own will, your pride, your wounds. It is both a blessing and a burden.

And still, God does not leave us to struggle alone. He walks with us, especially when we stumble through the hardest virtues to live out; the ones that mirror Christ. To imitate Jesus is no small task; to be perfect as He is perfect?

It feels impossible, and it is impossible without Him. But when we stand in the light of our own forgiveness, when we truly grasp how much we have been pardoned, something shifts. Forgiveness becomes a liberation, a releasing of chains and a healing of wounds that vengeance only deepens. Forgiveness is akin to Mercy (Matthew 18:23-35). Mercy responds to the image of 85

testimony, prayer, and the study of God’s Word, we sow seeds of hope and truth in the hearts of others. A truly caring community doesn’t just speak of love, it shows it and is sacrificial in character. Love is not optional in Christian living, it is essential. Without it, even the grandest acts of faith fall flat. But with it, our lives become a beautiful testimony to God’s presence in the world. So how can we love biblically and boldly?

• Kindness - “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:32).

In a world often hurried and hardened, there echoes a quiet, persistent call; a call to something deeper, softer; divine. It is the call to kindness, grace, and mercy in the face of struggle. Not flashy or loud, but transformative.

Like ripples on water, one act of forgiveness can reach far beyond its origin. Kindness is not just a virtue—it’s a spark. One kind deed like forgiving someone can light up the dark corners of a heavy heart. A smile, a word of encouragement, a helping hand—these are not small things. They are seeds of hope planted in the soil of humanity. The Bible mentions kindness over 200 times.

Why? Because kindness reflects the very nature of God. Jesus, the perfect embodiment of love, showed us kindness in its purest form—not just toward friends, but toward strangers, sinners, and even enemies. That is the call we must answer: to love even when it’s difficult to show love.

• Grace - “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” (2 Corinthians 13:14).

This is the blessing we bestow on one another. Grace is the fragrance of God’s heart. It’s not earned. It’s given - Freely - Lavishly. In Hebrew, grace is “chen”, meaning favour.

It’s what saved us. It’s what keeps us. It is the wisdom that guides us. When you walk in grace, you become a 86

vessel of God’s glory, pouring out what He has poured into you. To increase in grace is to grow in humility, patience, and understanding. It’s looking beyond differences and into the soul of another person, seeing what God sees.

Encouraging others, listening deeply, offering forgiveness before it’s asked for. You can choose to forgive even before anything is done against you. You can “pay it forward” in a way. This is grace in action. Grace stretches our hearts to love like Him. Imagine yourself as clay in the Potter’s hands. He turns you, shapes you, applies heat to refine you, not to harm, but to strengthen. That’s grace.

• Mercy - “The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.”

(Psalm 145:8-9).

Mercy is when judgment meets compassion. It’s not giving people what they deserve; it’s giving them what they need.

To show mercy is to choose tenderness over retaliation, healing over harm. The story of the prodigal son is drenched in mercy. The father doesn’t just forgive; he runs, arms wide open. With an unguarded heart he rejoices. That is how God welcomes us back, time and time again; and so we are to be with one another. Mercy sees the suffering and chooses to step in and to welcome home the lost. Whether it’s sitting quietly with someone in grief, forgiving a hurtful word, or offering compassion instead of criticism, mercy is love in motion like the waves of the sea. Without this mercy in motion love becomes stagnant and cannot bear life.

Mercy teaches us to see with God’s eyes. To understand that every person, no matter how broken, is made in His image. Can we show mercy without love? Perhaps. But mercy infused with love transforms not just the receiver, but the giver too.

Let these virtues become your life rhythm. A caring Christian community is a living testament to this love of 87

Christ in the other and makes space for healing. Real, raw, Christ-like forgiveness tears down the walls we build in pain and pride and makes room for love. Forgiveness is not forgetting. It’s not weakness. It is courage. It is strength.

And above all, it is Christ. To forgive is to reflect God’s glory. Love is kind, grace-full and mercy-full.

Making Jesus known by our love for one another and by our actions in the world is a form of mission and even evangelism.

Jesus declares this love as the greatest commandments.

Empowered by the Holy Spirit, believers become “salt” that preserves goodness and “light” that pierces darkness, shining through their actions and drawing others toward the warmth of God’s love.

Faith in Action: Loving Beyond our Boundaries Christ teaches us that the greatest commandment is to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” The second greatest commandment is similar, “Love your neighbour as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39). Jesus gave this central teaching in response to a question posed by a Pharisee, who was trying to ‘test’ Him. In so doing, Jesus was crucially combining two great commands from the Hebrew scriptures: Deuteronomy 6:5 ‘Love the Lord your God …’ and Leviticus 19:18 ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’

These were two passages that the expert in the Law should certainly have been familiar with; but the profundity of Christ’s answer lies in the juxtaposition of ‘Love for God’ and ‘love for neighbour’ as the twin pillars of a true faith and trust in The Lord.

The words of Christ in John 3:16 are probably the most famous verse in The Bible. “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16).

Indeed, this text has often been described as the Gospel in summary. These precious words of Christ are certainly ‘crucial,’ given that this word is derived from the Latin ‘crux’ meaning ‘a Cross’ pointing us to the greatest Truth - God’s supreme Self-giving love is demonstrated in the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ.

a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Compassion is the empathy, the tender emotion a person feels when confronted with another person’s suffering, coupled with the desire to relieve the suffering.

Such a formal definition, however, doesn’t do much to inspire action. So, Jesus, the Master Teacher, explains compassionate love with the unforgettable story of The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37).

Reality check: The Challenges of Loving Others!

The idea of loving others as God loves us is a wonderful concept, but we all know this is far from straightforward.

Sometimes we are faced with very difficult circumstances or people with whom we disagree vehemently or who have wronged us. Inter-personal relationships are, therefore, not all plain sailing and we need to bring the love of God to bear in our ‘difficult’ relationships which, surprise, surprise, are sometimes also to be found in church! This is where patience and understanding are so important, but The Bible tells us to “speak the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15) so we must ‘call out’ unacceptable behaviour or attitudes, but in a gracious way!

(Galatians 5:23). God is Love: the fruits of the Spirit grow in our lives when we open our hearts to God. Also, believers are to be non-judgemental in attitude and outlook: exhibiting a degree of self-critical faculty which understands only too well that we have a ‘plank of wood’ (faults in our own lives) to remove from our own eye first, before seeking to remove the ‘speck of sawdust’ (faults in other people’s lives) from our brother’s/sister’s eye!

(Matthew 7:3).

The Holy Spirit is also the One who interacts with our Spirit (inner self) to guide us and speak to us about which areas in our community, in our church, in our own lives need to be paid more attention. Sinful, selfish human nature wants us self-centred to hold us back from loving. Tiredness or a feeling of inadequacy or not enough people in a church to be able to start a project can be a hindrance to what the Spirit is saying. Often it only takes the smallest response to God’s leading (a mustard seed of faith) for the tree to grow so birds can come to find a home: i.e., more people, so with activities of the church for the benefit of the community (Matthew 13:31-32).

In the Sermon on the Mount, Christ declares key elements in the calling of believers: “You are the salt of the earth …

You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:13-16).

The Christian life can only be lived in the power of the Holy Spirit, which is seen as the Enabling power which Jesus bequeathed to the disciples, and to all who believe. The fruits of the Spirit are ‘Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,

‘God is love.’ (1 John 4:16). God’s infinite love shows itself in the most profound Self-giving. Believers are inspired to love and to give. A person can give without love; but no-one can truly love without giving. The Bible tells us that, ‘We love because God first loved us.’ (1 John 4:19).

Our capacity to give and receive love comes from God. However, we cannot claim to love God if we do not show love and compassion towards others: ‘Whoever loves God must also love his brother/sister.’ (1 John 4:21).

Jesus declared, “I AM the Light of the world,” He said.

“Whoever follows Me will have the light of life and will never walk in darkness.” (John 8:12). Light sustains life and lets us see the way ahead. Jesus, “The Light of the world,” shows us that we are loved, valued and cherished by God. Jesus helps us, not merely to exist but, to experience life at a much deeper level: “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10).

Light represents truth, goodness, understanding and life; darkness symbolises falsehood/error, wrong-doing (sin), ignorance (’in the dark’) and death. How amazing that Jesus says of Christians, “You are the light of the world.”

As ‘light,’ believers’ loving actions can be used by God to draw others into a personal relationship with Himself. What a tremendous responsibility to be given.

Though we often wrestle with the term due to the historic connections to slavery and colonisation, it can also generate feelings of inadequacy. True mission isn’t about striving—it’s about abiding. It is about walking courageously in the strength and wisdom of the Holy Spirit.

A Loving Purpose in a Complicated World

Opening Prayer Heavenly Father, you sent your son Jesus to show us another way, the way of love. Give us the courage to follow You faithfully and to persevere even when things feel hard. Jesus, you are the way, the truth and the life.

Help us to be the people you are calling us to be in sharing this message of love. Help us to listen to Your Holy Spirit and to hear those who are crying out for light and life and to respond as you would. Amen.

There are thousands of books ancient and new that have been written on mission and outreach, and equally as many sermons, courses, articles and devotionals, not to mention the societies and communities devoted to this topic. We certainly cannot hope to compete with this wealth of knowledge and experience here in this one short session. Furthermore, the word “mission” and all its historical connotations of a darker past (its connection to the slavery, colonisation and more) means that we wrestle with meaning; to find the terminology to describe what it is that as disciples of Jesus we are called to do. Over time the word “mission” has become contentious, weighty, politicised, monetised and even militarised. The History of it is long and complicated. Certainly, we will not be able to address these issues here.

Jesus gave the mandate to go into all the world to share the message of the Good News of the Kingdom of God and to demonstrate what that looks like through loving kindness, healing, caring and witnessing, and to do this in all humility and without judgement, offering a love that is unconditional. In doing so we must never assume that the communities that Jesus sends us to are unhappy or in need of our input. We need to be aware that our view of the world may be very different to our neighbours’ (whether they are on our doorstep or thousands of miles away). It is all about listening to the Holy Spirit and discerning His voice.

and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.”

Therefore, in the context of this resource, and in this session, our intention is to consider mission as reflected in the words of Jesus, to “go and make disciples” - to be people who love as God loves - with small and great acts of kindness, mercy, justice and grace. This is not so much about conversion and numbers, as it is about transformation and quality of life. Simply put, the love of God transforms lack into abundance, despair into joy, bondage into freedom, darkness into light; the testimony of which causes people to seek out the God of Love. It is God’s job to change people’s hearts, it is God’s grace that enables repentance; ours is to share our story and to bear witness of Christ’s mercy and forgiveness in our own lives, not to point out lack in others’ lives.

Reflecting this extravagant gift of love through our own lives is an inseparable part of our journey of faith as we follow Jesus. Yet, many of us struggle with feelings of guilt at our perceive lack of missional activity. This has more to do with perspectives and our expectations, whether real or perceived, of what mission is. If our lives are lived in and for Jesus, we cannot but be missional. Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father.” (John 14:12).

the earth. God is with and in us until the very end of the age (Matthew 28:20). Romans 8:28 tells us that all things work together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. By His Spirit, we are envisioned, encouraged, emboldened, enabled and empowered (strengthened) to be a “sent people”, a people who follow and who go and do the things Jesus did. In him we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28) and therefore we are enabled to become witnesses of his extravagant grace.

Furthermore, it is in being honest about our becoming (we are a work in progress), that we find the courage to share our testimony. Not because we are perfect, but because we are not. We too need His saving grace daily. This is what humility is. We humbly share our faith, tentatively offering the great kindnesses of God to all we meet, for He loved us first, before we even knew Him. He loved us in our shame and sinfulness; In fact, he loved us not in spite of it but because of it - unconditionally!

For this Purpose He Came In the first session of this course, we looked at Jesus statements about His divinity and how it has bearing on our faith. To understand our missional purpose, we need to understand Jesus’ mission. Jesus made many statements about this. The following are a few of the mission statements that Jesus made, in other words the purpose for which He came:

We need to reframe the term mission not as conquest or achievement, but as a way of being, as love in action. It might be more helpful to think of mission as “purpose”. Our purpose as disciples of Jesus is to be disciple-makers who make a way for the transformative work of God’s kingdom on

If overseas mission is being considered, then it is almost always a working together with churches and ministries that are already providing for their people within their own culture, context and circumstances. Whether local or far away, we can never assume to know what others need or that because they live differently that there is lack.

Session 7

When he was accused of spending time with sinners, He said: “The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

(Luke 19:10).

When he taught about sin and the devil He said: The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.” (1 John 3:8).

In reply to Pontius Pilot’s question about Jesus’ kingship, Jesus said: “You say I am a king, for this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth.” (John 18:37).

Jesus came to bring restoration to broken relationships and fullness of life, to defeat the works of destruction and evil, to provide a way for sinners to repent, to enable them to turn their lives around, to tell people about the Kingdom of Heaven, to seek and save the lost and to bear witness to the truth of Jesus Christ. It may sound an impossible task; however, this is our mission too. Rather than a task, it is a way of life. He has not left us without instruction or access to the work of the Holy Spirit. It is by His Spirit that we will achieve our transformational goals. This means that learning to hear God’s voice and listening to the Holy Spirit is key to everything we do in our lives and the life of the church. It is something we learn to do and continue to learn to do as we grow in faith.

A Good Idea or God’s Idea

in the community? Who is He already working with? It is about following in His footsteps rather than rushing ahead with our own agenda and assumptions. We need to hone our listening skills and ask for revelation from heaven - as the Lord’s prayer highlights, “your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” There is a blueprint in heaven that makes its way to earth when we pray.

He has shown us what His good and perfect will is through Jesus Christ His son. We are His children redeemed by His blood and blessed with the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

We are redeemed yet imperfect. He has already shown us what humanity needs through having met our own need for a new heart. Now we need to ask, seek and knock to find the “who, how, when and where” as we walk with Him in His mission (Missio Dei). With our purpose in mind, He will provide all that is needed and abundantly so (for what father would give their son a stone when he asks for bread).

When we live in Jesus, we live missionally by default.

He came to heal, to rescue, to restore, to set free, and to speak truth—and now, that mission pulses through us. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, we are envisioned, equipped, and emboldened to echo Jesus’ works in our own time. As we listen, follow, and trust, we become salt, light, and living testimonies—modern, courageous witnesses in the great story God continues to write through His people. Be encouraged for you are never alone.

This is the testimony of God’s people over thousands of years - the great cloud of witnesses that cheer us on from the pages of history, the Bible and our current faith communities. You are not expected to go it alone.

(Hebrews 12:1).

Mission and outreach into our communities is not so much about good ideas as it is about God inspired direction and possibilities. The question to ask is not, what will we do? but rather, what is God already doing amongst us and 112

Time to Share

As believers and a community after God’s own heart, we are continually being transformed into His likeness by faith and by grace. The degree to which this happens is our choice. This is not achieved through striving, but through a willing heart. A heart surrendered to the work of the Holy Spirit and given over to do God’s will. To share the Good News of the Kingdom of God in the power of the Holy Spirit, is to manifest the presence of Jesus Himself, in our prayers, words and actions. As we live and move and have our being in Him, we are enabled to address, as He did, issues of injustice which cause the destruction of all that is good in people and all of creation.

Our aim through this course, therefore, is to offer an opportunity to examine your own life and walk of faith in light of Jesus’ call to go and make disciples. To learn from Him and to go out into our communities as His apprentices and life-long learners. To live out our faith daily in ways that bring the aroma of Jesus in all we say and do. If we believe that God is at work in us by His Spirit, then it is from our own growth in discipleship and the deepening of our relationship with God and one another that our mission and outreach will flourish.

A. Introduction

It may mean joining with other churches or secular organisations who are already taking some action. It may mean, perhaps along with others, speaking with those in authority about justice for someone (Jesus always stopped to minister to the one person as well as to the many), or offering a safe space for those in mental distress.

Ultimately, the most important thing about being disciples, apprentices of Jesus, is that we love as He loves, actively listen and remain teachable.

With great compassion, kindness and humility we make our very best attempt within our reach, our circle of influence, our ability, gifts and means to love as Jesus loves. It is not easy as it requires the sacrifice of our own will, a wrestling with our own desires as we offer our lives to Jesus as living sacrifices. We pick up our own cross upon which we have placed these desires in exchange for His eternal promises. We trust in God’s manifold wisdom and in the power of love. All these things together make mission transformational in a way that ensures its continued growth after we have long gone.

Discerning God’s Will

Together we acknowledge and share our gifts, knowledge, abilities and experience. Secondly, it is achieved in understanding your context as a community of faith, and by listening to the cries of the people within and without the church “walls”. To hear their cries is to hear God’s heart and receive God’s vision for transformation.

Following Jesus’ Example When we have listened together and heard, we take steps towards action in the power of the Holy Spirit and with the help and resources offered through others and through the Congregational Federation. Your action probably won’t look like it did when Jesus walked on this earth, but our commitment to discipleship will enable the presence of the Kingdom of God in our communities, and this is unavoidably transformational as it was in Jesus’ time.

Jesus demonstrated this as he walked amongst the poor and the needy. Together with the support of his chosen disciples, He transformed lives: • healed the sick, raised the dead and restored the broken • gave generously his peace to those in distress • Rebuked the religious leaders for their false piety, hypocrisy, judgmentalism • challenged the imperialistic and authoritarian rulers of His day about their cruelties and injustices, and the super wealthy about their greed and selfishness

How is this achieved in practice as His apprentices? As people of the Congregational way, it is achieved first and foremost in community; discerning the will of God together through prayer, actively listening to each other as we meet for worship or in the business of running our churches.

To hear clearly may mean to first let go of the things that worked in the past or to pick up something that didn’t work but may work now. It may mean doing something completely new, the picture of which grows as you take one step at a time towards the vision given you. What matters is that you take one small step towards the goal.

It is up to us to learn to be intentionally present, intentionally ourselves each day. It is as simple as stopping to chat to the person selling the “Big Issue” magazine, listening attentively to their story and buying a copy. You never know what might come of that five-minute missional interaction.

In Conclusion

Jesus’ ascension into heaven hailed the end of one era and more significantly ushered in the beginning of another, that of the availability of the Holy Spirit to all who ask in the name of Jesus Christ. This has not changed and neither has Jesus’ call to all who believe, to go and make disciples. As this course comes to an end, we hope it ushers in a new beginning for you and your church. We pray that this course has given you a new energy and vision to step out in faith; to reconnect with God and His mission in creative ways in the strength and wisdom of the Holy Spirit, so that Jesus’ message is known to all.
