Did You Know? • Stever House was the first green dormitory in the U.S., built in 2003. It has a LEED silver designation. • Started in 1994, the “Wireless Andrew” network laid the foundation for today’s Wi-Fi that allows computers and mobile devices to access the internet anytime, anywhere-- wirelessly. • CMU alumnus Freddy Anzures (‘99) was one of the select few who helped design the iPhone. • Polymer scientist and alumna Stephanie Kwolek made a discovery in 1965 that led to the Kevlar® fiber, which is used in protective clothing for firefighters and bulletproof vests. • The Smiley :-) was created by CMU research professor Scott Fahlman in 1982, the beginning of emoticons in email. :-O • CMU alumnus and professor Luis von Ahn and his colleagues are responsible for developing CAPTCHAs, those wavy, distorted words online shoppers often need to decipher before completing a transaction. • The GigaPan Camera System, developed by CMU professor Illah Nourbakhsh and project scientist Randy Sargent, is a robotic device that enables any digital camera to shoot breathtaking multibillionpixel panoramic images. • Countless CMU alumni have shaped the world of entertainment, including Ted Danson of “Cheers,” Zachary Quinto of “Star Trek,” Tamara Tunie of “Law and Order: SVU,” and Matt Bomer of “White Collar.”

Our Summer Housing Guest Services Office is located in Stever House (first floor) at 1030 Morewood Avenue. Staff are available in the office MondaySunday, 1:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. All after-hour accommodations and related issues must also be directed to the Summer Housing Guest Services phone number (412-268-4101). Housing & Facilities Extended Stays: Should you need to extend your stay on campus, please contact the Summer Housing Guest Services Office (412-268-4101) as soon as possible. Because guests normally reserve accommodations months in advance, we cannot guarantee any unforeseen extensions. If we are able to furnish you with an extended accommodation, please do not assume that it will be in the same location, although that is always our first consideration. Microfridges: For your convenience, microfridges may be rented (as available) for a fee of $20.00/week. Please stop by the Summer Housing Guest Services office in Stever House (412-268-4101) during regular business hours (MondaySunday, 1:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.) to rent a microfridge. Internet Access at Carnegie Mellon University: All guests of CMU are granted temporary access to our computing resources through the use of a guest, sponsored or courtesy internet account. If your program or conference does not provide you with an internet account, Conference & Event Services will supply you with a complimentary WIFI access code upon check-in. Laundry: Washers and dryers are available in each of the summer residence halls or a designated on-campus laundry facility. You are able to view a virtual laundry room to check for washer/dryer availability at this link: www.laundryview.com/cmu.

University Athletic Areas: The weight and exercise rooms in the Cohon University Center are equipped with bicycles, steppers, Nautilus machines, treadmills, etc. To use these areas, or to borrow equipment for these facilities, you must either have a Carnegie Mellon University staff/student identification card or a Carnegie Mellon University-sponsored identification card. The exercise rooms, basketball courts, tennis courts and swimming pools also require an ID in exchange for the mandatory color wristband. A different wristband is issued daily for the use of all athletic areas and must be visible at all times.

Key Information Carnegie Mellon University has one of the safest lock systems because it locks behind you automatically. You must carry your key card with you at all times. CMU cannot assume responsibility for any lost or stolen items left unattended. Lock-Outs: Should you inadvertently lock yourself out of your accommodation, please contact the Summer Housing Guest Services Office at 412268-4101. Lost Keys: Electronic key cards - If you lose your room key, you must visit the Summer Housing Guest Services Office on the first floor of Stever House to get a replacement key. There will be a replacement fee of $5.00 for the third issued key and will increase in increments of $5.00 for each additional key that is lost. Metal keys - If you lose your metal room key, you will be responsible for all fees related to replacing the lock and key to your apartment. Please notify Summer Housing Guest Services immediately at 412-268-4101 or confserv@andrew.cmu.edu if you lose your metal key. Note: Guests with CMU photo identification cards should visit the HUB, located in the lower level of Warner Hall, during regular business hours to get a replacement identification card (fees do apply). To view the HUB’s current hours of operation, please visit their website at https://www.cmu.edu/hub/contact/index.html. If you happen to lose your card outside of their regular business hours, you must visit the Summer Housing Guest Services Office on

the first floor of Stever House to get a temporary key until you are able to go to the HUB. Using the Electronic Key Card: Please refer to the instructions on the back of your room key. Checking Out: For all accommodations with metal keys, guests are required to return their keys before departing campus. Please refer to the check-out instructions from your group coordinator for specific check-out instructions. Keys must be returned by 12:00 (NOON) on the day of departure, unless your group coordinator has made special arrangements. Please inquire with the Summer Housing Guest Services Office if you are unsure of your departure status. If your keys are not returned, you will be responsible for all fees related to replacing the lock and key to your apartment. For guests using the electronic key cards, there is no formal check-out process. Your key will automatically expire at 12:00 NOON on the day of your departure, unless your group coordinator has made special arrangements. Safety/Security: Immediately report any missing items or suspicious persons and activities to university police. Do not tamper with any equipment, including smoke detectors and fire alarms. Individuals and or conference/camp groups will be charged for tampering.

Parking and Transportation Parking: If you are planning to have your car on campus for the duration of your stay, and you have not coordinated parking arrangements prior to your arrival, the best option is to contact Conference & Event Services to obtain a reserved parking permit. This reserved permit will guarantee parking provision for your vehicle during your stay. If you choose not to purchase a permit, guests can park in the East Campus Garage and pay at the pay station when exiting the garage. Guests will be charged a daily rate. Overnight parking is not permitted unless you make arrangements with Conference & Event Services. Metered parking on and around campus is also an option. There is very limited parking on campus roads, including: Margaret Morrison Street, Frew Street and Tech Street. Meters are monitored by the City of Pittsburgh. Bus Transportation: The Port Authority Transit (PAT) System can take you almost anywhere: three different malls, entertainment complexes, the airport, IKEA, Target and anywhere downtown. PAT schedules can also be found online at: www.portauthority.org. Campus Shuttle and Escort: The university police department provides transportation late at night to residential halls and university apartments in the Oakland, Shadyside and Squirrel Hill communities. The “Do’s” For Fire Safety While Staying In Campus Accommodations •

Do learn your primary (most direct) evacuation route and a secondary evacuation route of the residence hall you will be residing in. Do plan an outside meeting location where accountability can be checked. Do stay with your food as you are preparing it. If you leave the kitchen area, even for a brief period of time, turn off the appliance. Cook with caution - it is one of the leading causes of fire alarm events at universities. Do use a multiple outlet power cord when plugging in more than two electrical devices. Do immediately evacuate the building upon activation of the building’s fire alarm system. Get out and stay out. Never attempt to go back into a building that you have just evacuated for any reason. Do keep all objects away from any fire sprinkler head(s). Do keep fire doors closed. They are intended to keep fire and smoke from spreading throughout a building. Keeping a fire door open with a wedge or object defeats the purpose of the fire door. Do practice caution when using the laundry facilities. Keep the area around the dryers clear of combustibles. Clothing that comes in contact with flammable substances (paint thinner, gasoline, etc.) should be laid outside to air dry. Once dry they can be washed and dried as usual. Do turn any fans you are using OFF before you leave your room.

Do Not use the elevator as a means of egress during a building evacuation, take the stairs. Do Not stand next to a building you have just evacuated from. The first responders will be trying to gain entry and you could impede their progress and endanger yourself if you are too close to the building. Do Not overload the wall outlets in your room; use a multiple outlet power cord with built-in fuse. Do Not disregard the alarm notification of a building’s fire alarm system. When in doubt you must get out. Do Not hang anything from a fire sprinkler head, EVER. Do Not prop open a fire door. Some fire doors in a building are tied into the building’s fire alarm system and will close upon activation of the building’s fire alarm system automatically. Do Not burn candles, smoking materials or similar products in your room.
