Tribes adopt new approach to suicide prevention

Epidemic, crisis, and contagion are all words that have been used to describe the suicide statistics and disparities that have plagued Native communities for several decades. Yellowhawk Tribal Health Center Circles of Hope program hopes that a new way to respond to these deaths will help improve those numbers. Contagion is normally a word used to describe the spreading of a communicable disease through close contact, but it was used in the resolution passed Oct. 1 by the Board of Trustees (BOT) for the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR) to illustrate that suicide can spread from one person in duress to another. According to data gathered by the Northwest Portland Indian Health Board from 2008 to 2012, American Indians and Alaskan Natives living in the Northwest, ranging from
