Happy New Year

By the CUJ MISSION – Voters on the Umatilla Indian Reservation will have six candidates to choose from when they go to the polls Feb. 7 to choose a replacement for the position of Secretary for the Board of Trustees on the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. One of them will fill the vacancy left when David Close was recalled in October of 2016. The position will be up for election with the rest of the Board of Trustees members in November of this year. Candidates include two who have previously served on the Board of Trustees, one currently serving in a write-in position, two that have tried but not been elected, and one who has never before thrown her hat in the ring. Jiselle Halfmoon currently is serving as secretary of the General Council after voters responded to her brief “write-in” campaign. N. Kathryn “Kat” Brigham, who served 10 years as Secretary, gave up the position last year to run unsuccessfully for BOT chairman. David Wolf, a 25-year employee in the CTUIR fisheries program, served on the BOT in the mid-1980’s. Leila Spencer and Lawanda Bronson
