Would non profi-t lending work here? $100K grant will study starting specialized financial institution MISSION — The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Reservation (CTUIR) have received a Northwest Area Foundation grant of 5100,000 to explore the feasibility of starting a specialized financial institution that works in places that are underserved by traditional lending establishments. A non-profit Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) has a primary mission of promoting community development. CDFIs can make a wide range ofloans and provide "development services" (education, training, technical assistance, etc. ).

The CTUIR's 2010 Comprehensive Plan has two objectives that could be served by a CDFI: Strengthen the tribes' private (small business) economy by creating suitable conditions for tribal members to start and expand businesses and social enterprises. Develop programs for assisting Tribal members to become financially stable, such as maintaining good credit ratings and family resilience. MISSION — It's only an idea at this point, but Tribal leaders on May 4 decided to put in motion plans to determine whether or not a bowling alley and /or a family entertain center could make a go of it on the Umatilla Indian Reservation. The Board of T r u stees for the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR) voted unanimously to back a proposal made by Aaron Hines to establish a team of tribal staff members to choose a firm to do a feasibility study to answer questions, chief among them being whether a bowling alley /family entertainment center could pay for itself. In a work session April 29, Hines made his proposal as an avid bowler, not as the BOT treasurer. The BOT voted on the issue in open session May 4. Hines said it was important that progress has been made on Yellowhawk Tribal Health Center, housing and, expectedly, See Bowlin Pa e 43
