Tribes buy Hamley’s CTUIR wins bankruptcy auction for steak house, western store, coffee shop and saddlery By Wil Phinney and Jill-Marie Gavin of the CUJ

PENDLETON – The Confederated Tribes are the new owners of Hamley’s, one of the city’s most iconic cowboy businesses that dates back more than a century. The Tribes purchased the Hamley’s restaurant, coffee shop and western store in a bankruptcy auction in Portland July 25. At the end of seven rounds of bidding, the Tribes won with a high bid of $3.55 million. The business is valued at $4.9 million, according to Gary George, COO at Wildhorse Resort & Casino. Wildhorse will manage day-to-day operations for the business, which employs 40 in the restaurant and coffee shop, 20 in the store, plus others in administration, George said. Gary Burke, Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, said in a news release that the Tribes are pleased to keep the business in local hands. “The Tribes have a long and storied history with the Hamley family and businesses that have spanned over five generations,” Burke said in the release. Not everyone on the Umatilla Indian Reservation is happy about the sale, but the purchase should not come as a complete surprise. CTUIR buys Hamley’s on page 21A
