01 THE GROWING TREE The Art Museum Design of Exchange Programe Jan, 2008 Artists village, Santa Ana, CA, USA

BASIC INFORMATION The artists’ village in downtown Santa Ana has been growing and developing for the last 12 or so, years. It is a fun, interesting, cultural experience here. The artists started moving into the landmark Santora Building about 15 years ago around 1999, and the Village has since grown into a funky fusion of galleries, live/work artist studios, folk art shops, and some good eats. Besides, it also has the great looking, Rehabbed brick buildings alongside ornate Spanish architecture lined with fountains, palm trees, and sidewalk cafes.

It was my first oversea project when I was in Cal Poly Pomona as an international exchange student. The project was aiming to design an art museum which could provide more opportunities for the artists to move in to show their works, and the site is located on the second street in downtown Santa Ana. My main idea is due to the daily growing inclination, the interior space would attract more artists and studios to move in like a growing tree.

So the branches and leaves are the floors of exhibition space. They are in several different levels to illustrate the uneven branches of a tree.

The different levels will give visitors different feelings as they circulate throughout the different floors while enjoying the exhibitions and the sight communications.

All the drawings presented in the project were done by myself.

As the daily increase, the growing artists’ village is a real artsy block party now, its 40-plus galleries throw open their doors for the First Saturday Art Walk. As the sun sets, the neighborhood springs to life, with twinkling trees and musicians playing along the Second Street Promenade while you peek inside studios and design workshops. The visitors could not only buy the hard-to-find art supplies and instant DIY gratification on the cheap inside the ARTbar but also could make their houses a work of art inside the furniture and decor shops in the village. The visitors could pop in to the center’s three galleries, with edgy works by local and international artists on the verge of making it.

CONCLUSION Since the interior space are getting more interesting to visit, The Growing Tree will absorb more energy to grow more layers to attract more studios and gellaries, and meanwhile the void space in the first floor will attract more citizens to enjoy their days here around the neighborhood.

SECTION PERSPECTIVE No matter where the people originally come from, they would enjoy their days in the downtown art museum. Neighbors could walk their dogs and let their children play on the landscape of the museum. Visitors could have a cup of coffee and sit inside the bookstore to enjoy reading even not go to see the shows above floors.

The museum and street will be full of urban Vitality !

As the audience continues the tour, they take a break away from all the textile works and walk into a room filled with ceremonial Mimbres Pottery.

These potteries are bathed in warm sunlight from the room's glass ceiling. The natural light refreshes the crowd form past two dark rooms. Furthermore, the light represents the natural and spiritual symbols that these potteries carry. Lastly, the fourth floor revisits the style of the third floor as the tour once again shows the narrative paintings.

This is a great way to begin the exhibition as it kicks tarts with a grand display textile works. To accommodate the handicap, I added ramps and elevator to make the circulation smoothly. As the crowd continues onto the third floor, they are introduced to the beautiful paintings. This is a darker room than the previous but each painting has its own spot light to highlight the beauty of its art and storytelling.

02 THE NETWORKS Beijng Information Science & Technology University Planning & Architectural Design-Winning project Jan-Jun, 2014 BISTU, Beijing

BASIC INFORMATION Beijing Information Science & Technology University new campus is located on the north fifth ring road of Beijing, it covers the area of 78.96 hectares.

This was the first university bidding project when I was in Beijing Institute of Architectural Design Company, and we designed the second section of this project (the above picture) with architects in SHW Group. It was a combination of 4 buildings in university including one office building, 3 teaching & lab buildings totally 113,816 square meters.

What I have learned in this project was how to design the combination buildings in the university and how to translate the internet language into architectural one smoothly while using appropriate design methods to provide more comfortable communication spaces inside the buildings to connect campus with city while providing more possibilities for students and the citizens.

All the drawings presented in the project were done by myself.

The St Luke's ad agency in London encourages people to set up a new 'family' every time the core work-force exceeds 30 people. New York's Eye Image does the same. The former chief executive of Celltech believes the ideal size of working group is about 70 which he calls a 'creative compartment'.

So, we design 11 prototype of the communication space to enlighten the students' creative thinking.

The prototypes of communications space are distributed in each level of each building, even in the connection parts, they keep close contact with each other. Therefore, the students could generate the creative thinking and collaborate in any time, everywhere.

03 THE OPEN STREET Tianjin University Urban Design Update Sep-Dec, 2012 TU, Tianjin, CHN

BASIC INFORMATION This project located in the north edge of the Tianjin University, and connected with Anshan West Road which was the most important electronic commercial street in Tianjin. The project was planned to occupy 8.4 hectors including 19 buildings.

Based on the research, with the reference of Zhong Guan Cun Business Area, and integrating the base characteristics, the city functions are reviewed.

Finally, below adjustments are made: Introduce the square, street side and corner landscaping, in order to improve street environment, satisfy the shopping demand, and revitalize the entire area. Design commercial building for electronic products to make harmony with surround shops. Design sky-high commercial buildings to attract hi-tech business, then create an open street to provide healthy business environment while remodeling the comfortable circulations and road scale.

Jian Bing Guo Zi is a type of popular Chinese pancake where is usually provided by the owners of the bottom of the residential buildings along the streets in Tianjin.

No matter how crowded or narrow they are, people will go there to buy and eat Jian Bing Guo Zi as breakfast and snacks.

A 100m street may have several Jian Bing Guo Zi stores and it is hard to locate or find them because of their same facade design.

The only way to locate the store they want to go is looking at the green logo above its windows.

Could not Pass Trough

People could enter the open street to go shopping and eating or spending their leisure time, and they would happily find out or locate their favorite shops while enjoying the interesting landscape and spatial design inside.

The sunken plaza is at the bottom of the interior open street, and the shops including electronics and foods are around the sunken plaza and the above open street.

Besides, the buildings along the street are very close to the side walk, the shoreline is barely regressed more than 2 meters to provide pedestrians comfortable distance to walk or stroll.

The moving lanes and the bike lanes are not separated in Tianjin, it is very inconvenient for the pedestrians to get on the bus safely on the main street.

Therefore, I give more space for setting the bus stops between the bus lanes and the bike lanes that could make pedestrians get on the bus more easily and safely. Then, I also plant some alee-trees to shade the sunshine for the people passing by. Furthermore, the sidewalk is moving backward for more than 1.5 meters to make way to the open space of Commercial Street and buildings.

The city plaza is at the east corner of the Exterior Open Street nearby the north gate of Tianjin University. It could provide a beautiful landscape and a big comfortable platform for the local citizens. They could Enjoy their leisure time here.

04 THE PLATFORM Campus Plaza Sept, 2008 NCUT, Beijing

BASIC INFORMATION I did this project when I was in the Architectural Composition Class as a sophomore. The aim of the project was to train us to understand the principle of architectural composition better.

The little plaza is located in the middle of North China University of Technology in Beijing. It is a multi-functional plaza on the campus which is utilized very frequently in daily life due to its special location.

My idea is trying to offer not only a single plaza functional design, but also to make it become A Platform could attract more people to come inside and visit the exhibitions, communicate, sell their products, and hang out together. Finally, I won the first prize in Grade-wide.

CIRCULATION ANALYSIS The plaza is surrounding by many important buildings on campus, students and teachers including the relatives of teachers will pass through this little plaza to go having classes, eating, and chatting and to visit the little park.

According to Chinese 4-year college graduates' employment annual report of 2005: 1. 45% of the students prefer to learn while communicating with peers.

2. 2.3% among the students graduate from the college in 2004 in China went to start their own enterpreneurship as 2.9% in 2005.

05 THE SUNSHINE COURTYARD Shenzhen High School Planning & Architectural Design-Winning project Jul-Dec, 2015 Shenzhen high school, Shenzhen

BASIC INFORMATION Shenzhen High School was founded in 1947. It was designated as the state's new school in 2004, and Shenzhen High School plan to build a 123880 square meters new school on the site of 119196 square meters land in the area of Nigang in Luohu District in 2020. Their slogan is FUTURE SCHOOL, they want to build a high school represented the highest level of international high school.

I attended this bidding project as an architect of Beijing Institute of Architectural Design in 2015, we participated this bidding project for the total two rounds lasted 5 months, and finally we won the project collaborating with other two competitors in the second round: 1. iNgAmE Office(USA), Shenzhen China Office design consulting co., LTD. --Mainly responsible for designing the Teaching buildings.

Many famous architectural design types are forming into the courtyard for the reason that this could bring appropriate amount of sunshine into the yard while strengthen the axle wire at the same time. The axis is not a visible wire, but it could attract people to unite together to do some activities and communicate or yield other creative ideas, it is like soul and ritual space.

The creative thinking and the needs for multi-culture communication are gradually improving nowadays. It is believed that putting courtyard design would improve the charisma and humanity culture atmosphere into the campus, so does the Hight School design.

According to the newest study in Chinese high school education, more and more schools chose to copy the similar selective course courses systems to do the trials in high school, this could be a good way to enlighten the students to have more diversified development directions in the future.

So we divided the garden and landscape into many little courtyards to provide more comfortable and relax environment for the students and teachers. In this way, they could decompress and relief in the embrace of nature.

We built a 2500 square meters courtyard formed by the four teaching buildings in the middle of the high school, it is also on the mirror and order axis line with beautiful landscape and gardens. Besides, we also design some small courtyards distributes in the teaching building area.

Students could study and communicate in the gardens while enjoying their leisure time.

All the dorms and canteens are distributed in an appropriate distance to the teaching buildings sharing the most beautiful scene along the canal.

According to the Shenzhen architectural design code, classrooms in high school should have sunshine no less than 2 hours per day on the winter solstice. At least half of the dormrooms should have sunshine no less than 1 hour per day on the same day. Our design scheme totally meet the demands.

MY ART WORKS 2006-2012 USA+CHN

ILLUSTRATION I began to draw when I was 5 years old, I took part in some children painting exhibitions when I was a teenage. Then I began to practice Chinese caligraphy and learn some western painting methods.

I feel cool to draw and paint because I can make more friends and also find the inner peace of my heart.

When I first time went to USA to join the exchange program, I attended the classes of fine art in the art department. I learned how to paint the acrylic painting and how to make clay, for most exciting thing is I shared the enjoy of drawing caligraphy with my foreign friends, they become to feel it interesting to learn and becoming more into Chinese culture. As an exchange, they taught me to paint the oil painting.

I think I will keep drawing.

BACKGROUND When I first came to the United States as an exchange student. I experienced a very hard life in the architecture department during the first quarter and with the heavy academic burden I created this work named "I am tired " to cry out my inner thought.

Then, I took this piece to attend the graduate exhibition show in Cal Poly Pomona and this work had won the Third Prize among all the students in major of Fine Arts.
